Kids Classes

Our Kids Classes Guide from Babies to Teens 4

www.sophias-diary.com

Not only is attending kids classes fun and educational for children, it is a place to make new friends too. There are over 200 classes on Sophia’s Diary for all interests and budgets. Voluntary run group are fun and not expensive either. Here are a few ideas about what’s on offer. Baby Classes

North London is rich with baby classes. They can be great for boosting development, socialising and enhancing bonding with baby and parent too. Baby Sensory, Caterpillar Music, Hartbeeps, Baby Massage, Baby Yoga, Jack and Jill’s, and Monkey Music are all very popular. If you are a parent that likes to try something different, our language classes that are suitable for babies, Asterakia and Boogie Bear, are extremely popular too.

Toddlers and Pre Schoolers

Classes are great way for our active little ones to burn some energy. They are fantastic in developing early social skills, and putting a smile on their faces too. Fine motor skills can be developed at abc’s and 1,2, Please. Children will love upbeat music at Zip Zap Kids, Shake Your Sillies Out of Music Time, diddi dance, and go on adventures with Little Imaginations and Move, Play, Learn. Get Set Boogie also have different themes each week that will excite little ones too. There are numerous stay and play groups in North London too. These are informal and more affordable too. It is also worth having a look at the activities of your local children centre.

Dance

Dance is fun, encourages teamwork, improves fitness and also makes children feel more confident. There are some exceptional dance schools in North London that offer several styles of dance class. Hip Hop, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Street Dance and Modern are just a few options. The Dance Studio, Dance Stables, Impulse Dance, Streetz Ahead, Platinum Performing Arts, and Impress Theatre Arts all have outstanding reputations. Not only do students have fun in class, there is also the opportunity to perform in shows and events too, which is great for boosting confidence. The dance schools mentioned also offer preschool classes too.

Cooking

Learning to cook is fun and enhances essential skills for children. It provides knowledge about healthy eating, and has elements of maths and science in classes. Children can learn how to cook, enjoy craft making, listen to stories and take home what they have made, at popular class Crafty Chefs Barnet.

Kids Classes Performing Arts

Award-winning school Platinum Performing Arts are acknowledged for sessions that are fun, friendly and enjoyable. They are specifically designed to develop children’s confidence, self-esteem and rhythm. Students take part in Dance, Drama and Singing classes. They will also perform an urban pantomime “Moana and her Incredible Friends” at the Millfield theatre in January, an event not to be missed. Children can learn to sing, dance and act at Musical Theatre sessions at Impress Theatre Arts and Razzamataz. It is great way to introduce children to performance whilst learning new skills. It’s also a fantastic in building children’s confidence and expressing their personalities.

Swimming

Swimming is not only fun and good exercise, it is an essential life and safety skill too. If you are interested in your little one learning from a young age, Turtle Tots North London offer classes for babies and toddlers at different venues in North London. Swimming Class UK also offer individual and small private group lessons, that accelerate the learning process.

Singing

Young Notes run several pop choirs for children aged between 4 - 18. They sing current, upbeat pop songs in a fun and friendly environment. The focus is on fun and nurturing a love of music. Children learn vocal and performance techniques and have opportunities to participate in group and solo performances. Mums can also join a choir and bring their kids to at MumSing.

Developing a passion for subject

Some children develop a great interest for a specific subject. Fun with Phonics run classes on the weekend for kids that love English. Dr Sergis Academy deliver science tuition, and students have the opportunity to conduct experiments. If learning a language is something that children wish to acquire, Parla Italiano run courses too.

Sport

Kids Classes

Sport is effective in ensuring children are fit, have good self-esteem, develop team working skills, and grow healthier too. There are some amazing sports classes across North London for all ages. Pro Elite offer classes from 18 months – 7 Years at various venues. Children are taught dribbling, striking, goal-scoring plus movement, co-ordination and stability. Sport 4 Kids Enfield have just launched children’s football, rugby, tennis, golf and dance classes, from toddlers to older children. Older kids also compete in children’s football or rugby, and take part in S4K tournaments and competitions. Learn jumping, stunts, tumbling and cheerdance, at Empire Cheerleading Academy. The moves and routines children learn are sensational and cheerleading has become one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. Children can attend courses such as Gymnastics, Trampolining and Badminton at various locations with Active Enfield.

It is fair to say that there is a vast amount of choice for kid’s classes in North London. It is great that children are provided with the opportunity to develop a passion from a young age. My name is Tonya and I run Monkey Music. I’m passionate about the delivery of my music classes and my goal is to make it not just the highlight of the child’s week, but for the parents, grandparents and carers too. Both my teachers and I love what we do and hope that you will too. Having grown up playing the clarinet and piano and enjoying singing and acting roles at the local theatre, I appreciate how much pleasure music can bring. I first became interested in Monkey Music when I took my own children to classes when they were four months and two years old. I loved the way the experience engaged them. My daughters were full of smiles and learnt so much at every class. I have been running the franchise since 2006 and have now taught thousands of children, giving me a wealth of knowledge and experience to pass on to other families. I still get that buzz when I see the child blossom and develop through attending Monkey Music and hope that you will join us soon.

We come into schools, nurseries and children’s centres to run healthy eating workshops in line with the curriculum. We cater for all food allergies and special dietary requirements. Children who cook not only learn a great skill for adult life but also have a much stronger awareness of which foods are healthy, and which are not. Cooking is a life skill! I have been running Crafty Chefs Cooking Workshops and Parties since 2013, with my passion for good home cooking & baking I show children how quick & easy it is to make good fresh food and let them take control. I think it is very important to educate children from an early age about food & cooking. Kids of all ages love cooking; they love the feel of food in their hands, the sense of satisfaction they get from making something themselves, but mostly they love eating it at the end.

Learning a Language Have you ever thought how great it would be to start learning a new language, but never really did anything about it? Perhaps you were not sure where to start from or thought that you were never good at languages at school, or perhaps you have tried and have been disappointed. We have been teaching Italian for more than a decade and the new methodologies enables people to learn quicker, to really speak the language and even to speak from lesson one. Long gone are the days when you needed to learn by heart words and conjugation without ever using them in class or even uttering a word. What we are good at, at Parla Italiano, is to teach you to speak the beautiful language. Parla Italiano was set up in 2006 and it operated mainly as an agency. In 2015 we set up our first classes in Palmers Green. We now have 12 classes open every term. Our classes are in the morning, afternoon and evening at different levels. We always

have a complete beginners class each term. From January we will have a complete beginners class in Palmers Green and one in Barnet. So we offer group lessons which are interactive; we use games and activities to make it fun for the students and at the same time effective. All skills (speaking, listening, writing and reading) and grammar are developed giving students plenty of practice from lesson one. Everything you need to know about

Hair Removal

What is it that makes us so nervous to talk about hair? People have it all over their body and sometimes in places they don’t want it. From facial hair to hair around the areola, bikini line and tummy hair, underarm hair or back hair – there can be fine light hairs or dark wiry ones. But hair and hair removal can be taboo.

This subject can be particularly difficult for some young girls and women, so often they don’t talk about it and keep quiet and just try something without any advice or expertise themselves at home. But DIY and messing around with hair removal at home can actually sometimes stimulate the hair to grow back thicker and more of it. This is often the case with facial hair, hair on the nipple and hair on the stomach area. We encourage you not to take hair removal into your own hands without speaking to an expert first. It doesn’t have to be embarrassing and getting good advice from a professional is far better in the long run. A client, let’s call her Mary, has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, aka PCOS. Women with PCOS produce higher amounts of male hormones and the imbalance causes multiple symptoms, one of the less serious, but still potentially upsetting, is excess hair in certain areas.

Mary was coming in to us for HD Brows treatment and after a few sessions had built up a great relationship with her therapist. Our therapist noticed the hair on her chin and asked her if she wanted any confidential but professional advice. Mary revealed she had some hair on the chin and around her nipple. She had previously been plucking the hair at home, which stimulates it to get a lot worse, and the skin was getting marked and suffering damage from the tweezers.

www.sophias-diary.com

27

Since then Mary has had a consultation and we treat the top lip and around the nipple with IPL and we treat the chin with electrolysis as it’s a mixture of hair that is both thin and thick. As she has POCS she will respond slower and need more treatments, but she is getting good results and the skin is looking brighter and less marked as she isn’t using the tweezers. She is more confident and feeling really happy that the hair on the top lip and around the nipple is so much finer and growing through slower. We are proud of our expertise in hair removal and the fact you can trust our therapists to treat you with friendly professionalism and care. Did you know IPL at Tessa Stevens was even featured in International magazine Elle? You can read the article here. You may assume we only advocate laser hair removal, but not everyone is suitable for IPL and not everyone can afford it either. At Tessa Stevens Health and Beauty Clinics we have a variety of professional hair removal methods on offer including IPL: Waxing: there are a variety of types of wax on the market but we only use traditional hot wax. This is because warm wax is more effective in removing all hairs, even stubborn hair and it is great for all hair types. It’s warmer in temperature and this helps open the pores. It is applied with a wooden spoon, sets on the skin and is taken off with fabric strips. This method is especially effective on the body and top lip. 28

www.sophias-diary.com

Intense Pulse Light: this treatment is for those that want permanent hair reduction and is suitable for any face or body hair that has a dark hair. This is not suitable for those with blonde or grey or red hair. A flash of light is applied onto the area and slowly destroys the root of the hair. This treatment usually requires eight sessions for the body and about thirteen for the face. Electrolysis: this is a good long-term solution as it can be a permanent method of hair removal. It is perfect for small areas such as hair on the top-lip, chin, tummy and nipple. This treatment should be considered for those people that can’t have IPL. It works using a small needle and a diathermy current to eventually destroy the root of the hair. The peaks and hormone spikes can temporarily create a hair growth pattern of thicker, darker hair in places like the face or our body. Please remember that as women, from a young age, all the way through to an old age, our bodies will go through peaks with hormones. The key thing is not to respond to it immediately, do not remove it at home because your hormones may settle and in the meantime you have created a stimulated hair growth which will always need managing. If your hair growth changes or you grow new hair or you’re are removing your hair at home and it is not manageable then have a professional and private consultation first.

Cherry and Paula Francis a Nurse Practitioner and Nutritionist-mother and daughter team who are the Founders and Formulators for every single SuperFoodLx product. Together we are passionate about maintaining our health and wellbeing which translates into creating and sourcing the most nutrient dense ingredients for everything we produce. The idea for SuperFoodLx was born out of Paula living abroad and experiencing unusual extreme hair loss and breakage. This occurred even while she was using supposed organic and natural products. She contacted her mother and asked her to make something for her hair like she used to when she was a young child. A few weeks later, a small pot of oil arrived in the post and after using it, within a few days Paula’s hair began to regain it’s usual strength and shine. This sparked a journey for Paula to begin learning about what was actually in her products. She found that many of the ingredients in the product she was using were not natural at all with little to no nutritional value. Many of the ingredients were actually serving to degrade the quality of hair. It was this inspiration why SuperFoodLx exists today. 32

For Adults

First Aid 36

www.sophias-diary.com

First Aid Tips and Advice In all our lives, whether at work or home, it is essential that we all know how to assist someone who is sick, or has been in injured. Paediatric first aid, as the term implies, is the initial treatment given to a child or infant who is injured or sick, prior to professional medical assistance arriving and taking over from you. The term paediatric refers to children and infants. A child is deemed as being aged from 1 to the onset of puberty and an infant or baby, being aged under 1 year old. The majority of choking events in children occur during play or whilst eating, when a

parent or carer is usually present. Events are therefore frequently witnessed, and interventions are usually initiated when the child is responsive. When a foreign object enters the airway the child reacts immediately by coughing in an attempt to expel it. A spontaneous cough is likely to be more effective and safer than any manoeuvre you might perform. However, if coughing is absent or ineffective, and the object completely obstructs the airway, then active interventions to relieve choking must commence rapidly and confidently.

www.sophias-diary.com

37

If you have an infant choking then we must start with 5 back blows. Support the infant in a head-downwards, prone position, to enable gravity to assist the removal of the foreign body. Support the infants head by placing the thumb of one hand at the angle of the lower jaw, and one or two fingers from the same hand at the same point on the other side of the jaw. Do not compress the soft tissues under their jaw, as this will worsen the airway obstruction. Deliver up to 5 sharp back blows with the heel of one hand in the middle of the back between the shoulder blades. Back blows for a child are more effective if the child is positioned head down. A small child may be placed across the rescuers lap as with an infant. If this is not possible, support the child in a forward- leaning position and deliver 5 back blows from behind. If the 5 back blows fail to dislodge the object we must then use chest thrusts for an infant. Turn the infant on to their back so they are facing up. With your free arm,

38

www.sophias-diary.com

support their head and ensure that the airway remains open without too much extension. Identify the landmark for chest compression which is the centre of their chest on the lower part of their sternum. Deliver up to 5 chest thrusts. These are similar to chest compressions, but sharper in nature and delivered at a slower rate. If the 5 back blows fail to dislodge the object we can then start abdominal thrusts for children over 1. Stand or kneel behind them and place your arms under their arms and encircle their torso. Clench your fist and place it between the navel and the bottom of their breastbone. Grasp this hand with your other hand and pull sharply inwards and upwards. Repeat up to 4 more times. Repeat the sequence of up to 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts for an infant, up to 5 abdominal thrusts for a child, until the obstruction is relieved or they become unresponsive. If they do become unresponsive then CPR must be started immediately.

Wh y mums should work ? There has always been a debate on whether or not mothers should work or stay at home in their children’s formative years, this has always been a hot topic in both the media and many households, provoking strong emotions and press headlines such as: ‘Sorry working moms, day care is bad for your kid’ (Huffington Post) or ‘The case for working mothers: your kids will be just fine’ (The Telegraph) A working mum has to balance both home and work life, which makes her learn how to organise every area of her life better and quicker. In order to do justice to the personal and professional roles she plays, the skills of time management, organisation and multitasking are something she must excel at otherwise her job / business may be in trouble. But what are some of the benefits you might ask? Working mums have well adjusted children - This can be true for some, some children of working mums learn to adjust with other people around them instead of solely depending on their mum’s (or dad’s) presence. Because they are left with caregivers like grandparents or child minders, they learn to adjust to new faces and interact with new people faster. This could add to the development of their social skills. Working mums have kids who are more independent - Working women have children who grow up to be more independent than those of stay-at-home moms. They get used to not being dependent on any one constant presence and learn the skills of self-sufficiency and independence much faster than children of SAHM’s. Whether you decide to stay at home or go back to work after having children, how old your child is when you decide to return to work and how many hours you work are all important factors in the developmental environment. 44

www.sophias-diary.com

Another factor many people consider, by bringing in money and raising the overall family income, working mothers may be able to provide a more stimulating and safer environment for their children. This isn’t just a matter of more expensive toys or learning material but also better living conditions, better nutrition and reduced family stress. However, long working hours and work-related stress could have an impact on the quality and quantity of interactions mothers can have with their children – interactions that are crucial for developing cognitive skills and language growth. In the end the decision is yours, there are pro’s and con’s for any route you decide to take. If you are not in a position to stay home, just know that you are not alone and your child(ren) will turn out just fine.

Planning for the New Year By Andrea Krase Owner and Founder of Sophia’s Diary Everything Child and Family Related in North London www.sophias-diary.com

The build up to Christmas is fantastic. Sophia’s Diary is on hand to give you excitement and fun in January and stop the January Blues. Why should the fun ever stop when you have a family? Let us help you find something they love doing.

A Family Day Out Booking a family day out should be on the priority list for the New Year. Life is gets so busy, it is always nice to spend some quality time with little ones. Our local theatres are always rich with family friendly shows, so this is worth looking into. Our family favourite is going to see Platinum Performing Arts Urban Pantomime at the Millfield Theatre. This year’s show is Moana and her Incredible friends. (11th – 27th January). This show will cause “mayhem in the village”, so definitely check it out. We know some some prefer outdoor venues, so do visit local treasures such as Forty Hall Estate, Myddelton House Gardens, Royal Gunpowder Mills, St Stephens House and Capel Manor. Trent Park Country Club is also an incredible family venue were a round of crazy golf can be enjoyed, then a delicious meal there too. We have some astonishing local Indoor Venues where kids can let loose and have the best time. Trampoline Arena’s such as Jump In Enfield and Flip Out Brent Cross are fantastic and also have Toddler Time

during term time, at a reduced rate too. Children can have hours of endless fun at local soft plays such as N20 Kids Club, Rye Assic Adventure Park and Fun Junction, and events are often hosted there too. Coffee and Crayons are reputable for their delicious food, offer classes and also have a soft play area too. Rainbow Creative Learning Centre is a new softplay and café. An extensive variety of fun classes run at this venue too, so do have a look. • KBO2 in Palmers Green have classes, events, after school and holiday clubs at their all from one venue. To add to the excitement, Eventful Ideas organise adult throwback nights here too. • Eat Out at a Family Friendly Venue Sunday lunches can be the most wonderful experiences at the correct venue. Kids love The Plough in Crews Hill, as it has an outdoor area for kids to play. The Winchmore, Thymari Greek Restaurant and The Farmhouse Restaurants are welcoming and accommodating to young children too.

A family photo shoot is also something that is a must do. The end piece is something you can look at in the lounge every day, and reflect on your family journey. It is always night to plan something nice to do with your mum, sister or friend too. Our top picks are a flower arrangement workshop or make up tutorial, as they have been thoroughly enjoyable in the past.

Home The New Year can be a time to projects for your home. Visit local interior design shops for inspiration and ideas. Painting your home, new lighting, furniture, accessories or tidying up the garden can make such a difference to your home. Why not do something different and ask Blue Lotus Furniture to put some life back into your furniture? Our amazing trades team on Sophia’s Diary are honest, friendly and helpful so give them a call if there is ever an issue. Career Evaluations January is often a time to revaluate work and your career. Several parents form new business ideas then. Booking a phone call with a business coach Tiffany Charters, is often a good way to start getting some new direction. Our business services section has reliable contacts from IT, Printing, Graphic Design and Website building to help you start your own business.

Book a holiday or a Weekend Away Isn’t it a fabulous idea to book a holiday early in the year so we have something to look forward to? Our Award winning Travel Agent Marios Constantas suggests that January is a good time to book and it one of the busiest times in travel. Families may also benefit from better deals when availability is higher, and pay a lower deposit too. A UK break in a cottage or Spa hotel can also be such a treat at this time of year too.

Happy Planning for 2019. Check out our Business Directory to find local contacts for the ideas suggested www.sophias-diary.com
