Director’s Chair

“What did I miss??” Last week, I was asked that question by an Americader who missed Americade 2016. The answer is easy: “A lot!” Americade 2016 had many, many new events, more factory demos than any other event in the U.S., a new adventure bike rally, sunny days, and, most importantly, we saw thousands of smiling faces. With 3 years in a row of good weather, Americade’s on a roll, but look for even better things in 2017, our 35th annual event!

More Demos?! 2016 saw KTM join Honda, Harley-Davidson, Indian, Yamaha, Victory, Suzuki and many more. This spring we expect to see even more factory demos join the fun. In fact, 2017 may just be a record setting year for factory demos at Americade. And, as always, with an Americade wristband you get VIP treatment to the demos (some of you die hards arrive as early as 4:30am to be first in line!!). The Best Rides: We received a lot of compliments in ‘16 about Americade’s rides, because the Americade staff and volunteer guides were tasked with making them better than they’ve EVER been. That’s a tall order(!), and we’re working hard to make sure your 2017 routes, stops, guides and meals are nothing short of excellent. You’ll be impressed. (And, catch them while you can, because we’ve implemented a new policy: Americade’s MiniTours are only available for 2 years, at which point they get retired for a number of years.) Adventure Bikes: DirtDaze, Americade’s Adventure Bike Event, is coming back bigger and better. In ‘16, we hosted KTM, Ducati, and Zero (electric) demo rides, obstacle courses, and world class rider training; look for more in ‘17. Many long time Americaders ride an adventure bike, and loved our first ever event, so whether you’re on an “ADV bike” or not, with an Americade wristband you’re welcome to attend & take a demo ride. Email Me. I want you to email me. I’m serious. What would you like to see us do at Americade? What events would you like to see return? What can we do better? Give it some thought, and send your suggestion to me via suggestionbox@americade.com. It will come straight to my inbox, and I’ll read every word. (Also, anyone who includes a joke that makes me laugh out loud will get a special shout out on Americade’s Facebook page.) Finally, by the time you’re reading this the U.S. election should be over (thank the good Lord above). Let’s actively focus on the things that bring us together, which includes motorcycling and Americade. I probably don’t need to say this, but remember that millions of motorcyclists worldwide will lend a hand to another motorcyclist without giving it a second thought. We’ll do this because we all hop on our bike to escape life’s burdens and divisions. We share a common bond with that “stranger” on another bike, which is why so many of us give a wave to each other as we pass on our separate, but common journeys. See you at Americade 2017, Christian

Americade 2016 blew the top off expectations by offering more things to see & do.

There were new attractions: Vintage Motorcycle Garage: Located adjacent to the newest bikes that were available for demo rides at FWH...we had a fleet of classics for folks to check out and remember yesteryear. Hospitality Tent at FWH: There’s a lot going on during Americade. Having a place to meet up & plan your next move is essential. The fact that it was comfortable & had refreshments made it even better. Party on the Pier: Pulling directly into the party after the parade was a treat for all. The view, the food, stunt show, music & more made the party a blast! Dirt DAZE: Tons of fun in the dirt and on the trails...working with professionals and playing around on the obstacle courses.

4

In addition to all the fun new activities, there were tons of fan favorites: Ameri-U: Seminars & workshops with industry experts & personalities. Beach Party: Amazing food, rockin’ tunes, chill crew...all in one place. Comedy Shows: Big laughs, great prizes & tons of fun! Cruisin’ Lake George: Hands down...BEST way to see the lake. Americade’s Expo: THE place to find the best motorcycle products around! Fashion Show: Folks got a preview of all that’s new in Riding Apparel and won great prizes.

americade.com

Festival of Lights: Parade, contests, performers...and LIGHTS! Judging: Pulling together the Best of the Best and showcasing the winners for all to enjoy. MiniTours: An Americade Specialty that kept the week rollin’. Poker Runs: 100s were a Stud for Charity during 2 days of rides. Professional Rodeo: Buckaroos & BBQ...a night of fun down on the ranch. Scavenger Hunt: prowling the roads, finding out-a-of-the-way places & winning great prizes. Stunt Shows: Thrilling shows by 6 performers throughout the week.

….the list goes on. There’s no other rally that offers as much to do on the road, off the bike, and around town. Americade has it all!

Stunt Shows The Busted Knuckles Stunt Show gave Americaders an exhilarating show at FWH Monday & Tuesday. They performed wheelies, acrobatics, burnouts, and jumps all on Harley-Davidsons!

King Tony & Eric Rocks enlisted the help of volunteers and got the crowd pumped up with anticipation as they performed their crazy stunts. They even jumped through fire! Young and old loved the show!

12

The Smage Brothers performed at Americade’s Expo several times during the week. They wowed the audience as they rode up near-vertical walls, jumped big gaps, did 180 degree helicopters, bunny hops, low speed wheelies, full speed stoppies, and an endless array of balancing tricks. There’s a reason these fellas are national champs, hold world records, and tour the country sharing their passion...they’re GREAT!

americade.com

World Champion, Teach McNeil, has been traveling the globe for over ten years thrilling audiences with his impressive display of gravity-defying stunts. Lucky us---Teach showed up at FWH on Thursday and at the Saturday Party on the Pier to provide exclusive shows to Americaders. He was just feet away from where folks were hanging out having lunch on Saturday. The thrills kept coming!

Breakfast by the Lake Breakfast by the Lake was a great place to get started on a full day of Americade Activities. The White Lion Room was ideally located for folks going on Factory Demo Rides; Guided or Unguided MiniTours; signing up for Judging; or heading to Million Dollar Beach for a day of shopping at Americade’s Expo. The Fort William Henry staff out-did themselves with a fabulous Breakfast Buffet. Courteous staff was on hand Tuesday - Saturday serving up a tempting buffet including all time favorites: • French Toast • Scrambled Eggs • Bacon • Sausage • Fresh Fruit • Fresh Baked Pastries • Coffee, Tea & Juice Folks left fueled up and rev’d for the day ahead!

Vintage Garage

All that was old is new again---at least to us. The Antique Motorcycle Club of America and The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club brought in some classic motorcycles from the late 1920’s through the early 1980’s. Folks admired the styling and technology of earlier years in motorcycling. Vintage Enfield, Harley-Davidson, Henderson, Honda, Indian, Kawasaki, MT, Rabbit, & Triumphs were showcased at Americade’s HQ at the tent on the Ft. William Henry grounds. Folks were thrilled to trace the origins of some of the best features in the bikes they ride today!

Riding Skills Rodeo Exclusive to registered attendees: 7 opportunities throughout the week to receive one-on-one instruction from professional riders and practice their riding skills. The instructors showed basic low speed motorcycle control techniques (that work on any bike) as they rode through various cone patterns. Participants were invited onto the course, with their own bikes, for some personalized instruction with the professionals. Afterward, riders had the opportunity to test the skills they’d just learned (with instructors watching on) to see if they could ride a pattern without putting a foot down---while staying inside the cones. People loved the sense of accomplishment that came from a few minutes of professional instruction and course time. We look forward to seeing how far they’ve come by next June!

Support the Troops Cruise: Tuesday cruisers were greeted by Bobby Dick singing ‘God Bless America’ as the Patriot Guard ushered folks onto one of the most thrilling cruises of the week.

Each had a full compliment of Americaders aboard to enjoy the spectacular views, scrumptious food, rockin’ bands and/or interesting commentary from the captain as these beauties glided along the shore. Everybody also had the chance to win cool prizes from the sponsors.

During the cruise, Americaders took a few moments to honor each branch of the military & enjoy a special Fly-Over by the US National Guard.

LAKE GEORGE

Cruise ‘n Cream: For the first time ever, Thursday cruisers were able to get off the boat mid-cruise. No, we didn’t make them swim...The Mohican stopped at the Bolton Landing Pier for Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream! The weather was perfect and it was a fun dessert following a special Taco Buffet. Tourmaster reps were on board mingling with cruisers and brought along fun prizes for many lucky winners!

NE W YO RK

Fireworks Cruise: Friday night has the reputation as being the most exciting night of the week...the Fireworks Cruise adds to that reputation by giving cruisers the BEST view of a breathtaking display of pyrotechnics. Americade’s Expo Americade and Foremost/AARP partnered to bring the best motorcycle tradeshow in the east to Lake George, NY. The Expo featured everything from apparel to communications systems, lighting to suspensions, helmets to tires, installations to pinstriping & more! To help make shopping more convenient folks pulled in to the free motorcycle parking at Father Jogues Park. Before heading over

20

to the Expo, they dropped off their gear at the Cycletrader.com Coat & Helmet Check so they’d have their hands free for shopping bags.

The Expo gates opened to excited attendees ready to see the latest in motorcycle gear & accessories. Many already knew what they were there for and made a beeline to their destination. Others hurried in to be first in line for an appointment ticket to get service,

installations, or some paint to spruce up their ride. Everybody who came through the gate received a $10 Rebate on Goods &/ or Services from over 40 Participating Vendors! The Food Court boasted everything from Hot Dogs & Hamburgers to Crepes, Popcorn Chicken, and Pizza. There was plenty of

seating around the food vendors and in view of Lake George...it was the perfect place to hang out, visit with friends, and fuel up for the rest of the show! The Smage Brothers, champion stunt riders Pat & Phil, performed for the crowd several times during the week. These fellas make riding look easy as they hopped, skipped, and jumped over obstacles, volunteers & each other.

AMA Club 1924 located just outside the Expo gates, set up a display featuring iconic moments in motorcycle history. As an added bonus they were signing folks up for a chance to win a ZeroDRS (won by Michael Szymborski of Pickerington, OH)! It was such an exciting week... we can’t wait until you see what we have cooked up for 2017...the 35th Annual Americade!

Beach Party

Joey Pucci & the American Longboards turned out gnarly Beach Boy styled tunes Thursday evening for party goers attending the Beach Party. The Hawaiian theme struck the right atmosphere for ticket holders as they dished up Grilled Lomi Salmon w/Pineapple salsa, Hawaiian BBQ Whole Pig, Mango BBQ Chicken Legs & Thighs, Coconut Purple Sticky Rice, Roasted Root Vegetables, Tomato, Cucumber and Papaya Salad, Fruit Display and Pineapple Upside down cake. Folks were able to stop on by to hang ten with the gang even if they had no ticket. Like any good party---it was open to all! Scala Rider provided awesome prizes to a couple of lucky winners. Thanks Dudes!

Pro Rodeo & BBQ Once again---the motorcycle community showed folks their generous spirit when they saddled up and rode over to the Rodeo & BBQ on Wednesday. It was a fun filled evening that started with a finger lickin’ Texas BBQ at the Painted Pony Ranch. Once the plates were wiped clean...folks moseyed over to the covered grandstand to watch a full-on Professional Rodeo with Bull Riding, Bareback Bronc Bustin’, Barrel Racing & more. Americade partnered with Baggers, Hot Bike, and Motorcycle Cruiser by donating a portion of ticket sales to The Prospect Center, which provides THE CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE care for those of us who are too disabled to live independently.

Gary Heyer - Quakertown, PA Americade’s intimate setting immerses you into a week of motorcycle heaven! Michael Magnusson Munnsville, NY If you missed Americade, you missed the best of motorcycling. Something for almost everybody. Paul Williams - Marblehead, MA Premiere motorcycle touring rally you don’t want to miss! George Tranos - Copiague, NY We enjoy Americade so much, it’s been one of our annual vacations for the past 17 years. Dave & Pam Kaufman Saugerties, NY Our biggest complaint is the week went too fast. Joe Mackin - Canton, ME

This is my favorite motorcycle event of every year. If you’re really into motorcycling - this is where you need to be the first week of June. Gary Winn - Feeding Hills, MA Reliably, a more mature, well-behaved crowd attends. There are lots of nice bikes to see. The events are well organized. It’s a beautiful area of the country. The food is Good and the lodging is plentiful. We’ll be back! Susan Carver - Newbury, NH Attended my first Americade in 1986 and haven’t missed one yet. Steve Maloney - Dracut, MA Lake George welcomes bikers for a great event and we appreciate the friendly and safe atmosphere. An event not to be missed! Michael Uttendorfer Wantagh, NY Stop thinking about it and come to Americade! You won’t regret it! Ziyad Ahmad - Shickshinny, PA Fun for everyone! Sue Boland - Easton, PA

Americade University Ameri-U brought informative, current, and interesting speakers, seminars, and workshops to the Fort William Henry Conference Center Tuesday - Friday. We covered everything from basic motorcycle maintenance to high tech communications systems, getting on the road as a solo rider to the strategies of group riding, finding the best cruising roads around to adventure riding around the world. In the evenings, we pulled in some ringers to entertain and inform the crowd with their stories. On Tuesday, Eric Trow presented an engaging and entertaining workshop which took on the misunderstandings and longstanding myths of motorcycling. Wednesday was all about getting dirty with Jimmy Lewis as he shared tips & tricks about riding in the dirt to be a better road rider. Fan favorite, Fred Rau, entertained crowds on Thursday as he presented his somewhat unique perspective on the interesting, odd and colorful history of how advertising has shaped motorcycling over past century. There was so much information to take in during the week...we encouraged Americaders to take in as many “classes” as possible (in between riding, shopping, eating...oh, and sleeping) and become a “Roads” Scholar. By Attending at least 1 Seminar and 1 Featured Speaker...folks could enter to win one of two pairs of saddlebags from New York Central Mutual Insurance! This year we had two winners: • Gabriella Palermo – East Haven, CT • Bruce Luhrs – Weare, NH Thanks to all our presenters (full list on americade.com) and NYCM for keeping the learning fun! Make sure to keep time in your 2017 schedule to stop by Ameri-U!

Fashion Show Can-Am/Spyder, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Indian, Slingshot, Tourmaster, Victory, and Yamaha pulled the latest & best fashions from their closets on Wednesday evening. The Ameri-models glowed as they strutted down the catwalk in the coolest motorcycle apparel around---everything from cool Ts & accessories to leathers, jackets & more! The garments were comfortable, stylish, and functional--all the things riders need when out on the road. The audience couldn’t wait for the much anticipated door prize drawing...where all the fashions shown on stage were given away to folks in the crowd!

Skills Challenge Slow & Steady Wins the Race

That’s never been more true than during Thursday’s Skills Challenge in the Fort William Henry’s Demo Area. Michael Gentile of East Haddam, CT showed his skill at lagging behind during the S-L-O-W Race. His ponderous pace got him over the finish line last---putting him in the #1 spot for the day! Dale & Joan Darling of Dary, NH showed us all what years of riding together can do for a couple. Knowing each other well can make all the difference when practicing precision riding with a passenger aboard. Their patience, persistence & skill paid off with a win in the Golf Ball Balance! Congratulations Folks!

• Check out the Accommodations Guide on the preceding pages for motorcycle friendly places to stay. • Don’t just call the first few places in the guide; they tend to get called the most because they’re at the top of the list. • Call the Chambers of Commerce (listed below) for recommendations. • Many small hotels don’t open up their reservation system until April, so a call to them then will often have success and a lower rate. • There are many small towns within a 25 minute ride and they tend to have more available space and lower rates. • The list on right of this page estimates mileage from Lake George to each of the towns with participating properties.

Festival of Lights Just as it was getting dark... bikes began lining up for the Light Parade and spectators grabbed a good spot in the village and at the FWH Demo area on Thursday night so they could catch sight of the best & brightest in motorcycle lighting. The parade rolled out amid the spectacle of a Fire Juggler & Balloon Glow. Upon the parade’s return, Judges got down

Americade Concert Series Americade’s 2nd annual Concert Series capped off Americade Week with 2 big nights of music. For the Friday Night Spectacular, the AUDIOSTARS headlined the evening. With plenty of seats for everyone, and a beautiful, clear night. They played before and after the fireworks display over the lake. Lots of folks said “bring them back again next year.” Saturday evening’s concert was headlined by Craig Morgan, a country music star who attracted thousands of fans from around the Northeast. Craig is also famous for his TV shows, for his support for our vets, and for being an avid motorcyclist, sometimes racing in enduro series in the south. Craig put on a heck of a show well into the night.

Coffee Clubs Early birds woke up the Ameri-Way... with coffee & donuts. Fred Rau was in the kitchen heating up the brew first thing Wednesday morning. Always ready to share a laugh with fellow riders, Fred helped folks get a great start to their day. Thursday was all about the ladies...and those who like hanging out with them. The Ladies Coffee Club was an informal chat session to meet & greet other lady riders, passengers, and wannabes. New friendships were formed, plans were made... and they’ll be meeting again next year!

Friday Night Spectacular The reviews are in and it’s easy to see why Friday was Americade’s BIGGEST night of the week:

People’s Choice Judging: One stop shopping to see all the Best Bikes of the week...according to our Judges..and the opportunity to vote on Your Favorite!

38

Awards: Distance & Longevity-something all riders want to brag about. Tourmaster was on hand recognizing all the recipients with special prizes.

Prizes: Over $30,000 given away (see next page for contributors & winners), including a brand new Harley-Davidson® Softail Slim®!

For those who wanted to be even closer to the action...they jumped aboard the Minne-Ha-Ha for a cruise around the bay..right under the fireworks!

Sensational Saturday Parade Participants tuned in to Froggy 100.3 to set the mood for Saturday’s Dunlop Parade.

Folks turned out early to decorate their bikes with festive balloons and watch as some wacky folks stepped forward to be judged for the Funniest Parade Outfit. Brody Landry of Mechanicsville, NY went home with the honor and a prize from Five Guys!

40

The parade followed a new route this year and landed on the Steamboat Pier for food, prizes, and entertainment.

The massive ships (and their loud horns) met paraders as they pulled right onto the pier for easy access to The Party on the Pier. Ticket holders enjoyed a full on Chicken BBQ with all the fixings

as Teach McNeil, World Champion Stunt Performer, pulled within a few feet of where folks were dining to zoom around with a boat load of gravity-defying stunts & wow the crowd. The thrills kept coming as we gave away over $4,000 in prizes (see next page for contributors & winners’ list). Thanks for hanging out with us! See you again June 5-10, 2017!

Lake George Rotary

Cash or Motorcycle Drawing Winner Some people have all the luck!

Tom Madison of Burnt Hills, NY took home $20,000 in cash after having picked up a raffle ticket on a whim! June 11 has always been a lucky day for Tom---it was the day he married his wife Sherrie! Fast forward 39 years: Tom & Sherrie were just finishing an anniversary dinner while the folks from the Lake George Rotary were on stage getting ready to draw the winner. As they left the restaurant, Tom’s phone rang with the good news. He’d won the Lake George Rotary Drawing! What a way to end an already wonderful day! The Lake George Rotary presented Tom with his check aboard a dinner cruise on Lake George. Tom & Sherrie are making plans for a February 2017 Florida Vacation with their winnings.

Best of Show Throughout the week of Judging, the panel of Americade Judges are presented with some pretty amazing motorcycles, trikes, sidecars, and trailers. The winner in each individual class is then considered for Best of Show among them all.

They put each bike through a rigorous 100 point inspection...which includes, among other things: cleanliness, mechanical soundness, manufacturer specifications, DOT readiness on altered machines, and artistry. It stands to reason that it takes a special kind of owner to meet these rigorous standards...and it’s no fluke that Rocco Zagari of Floral Park, NY meets and exceeds these standards year after year. He has consistently been one of our most celebrated participants because of this attention to detail. This year alone, Rocco took home the top prizes in Trike/Sidecar/Spyder, Decorative Light - Computer, and now...Best of Show. Well done, Rocco!

2003 Honda 1800 Trike Rocco Zagari | Floral Park, NY

People’s Choice The People’s Choice Award is an opportunity for Americaders to step up and be heard regarding their pick for the bike of the year.

With all the FANTASTIC bikes out there...we’ve narrowed the field a little by inviting individual class winners from the week’s Class Judging to participate in this Friday night event. These bikes have already gone through the inspection process mentioned above...so we know they’re awesome. Then it was up to Friday Night Spectacular party-goers to choose the one that struck their fancy. Once again, William Ruth of Pittsburgh, PA (also one of our most celebrated participants) was the clear choice with his 2008 Honda Gold Wing. William has spent years working on his “Gettysburg Bike” masterpiece. This bike is the culmination of two passions---motorcycles & the Civil War. His dedication shows win after win...this year William took home top honors for Trailer (also Civil War themed) and Decorative Light - Standard. Well done, William!

ADVENTURE BIKE RALLY Americade launched a brand new adventure bike portion of Americade, called DirtDaze! The HQ was the Painted Pony Ranch in Lake Luzerne, NY...just 5 1/2 miles west of Lake George & Americade. Organizers spent weeks creating an Adventure Rider’s fantasy play land on this 53 acre ranch in the heart of the Adirondacks...they arranged for KTM, Honda, Ducati & Zero demos, vendors, guided rides, world class rider training, obstacle courses, on-site camping, food, music, movies, bonfires, prizes, and more. Campers began arriving on Monday night so they’d be ready for a full week of activities. Starting with a hearty breakfast available 500’ from their tents---6:30-10am every day. After checking in at the Sign-up tent...folks got started with all the fun they could handle.

44

At the DirtDaze HQ were three big obstacle courses for riders to enjoy. They were essentially playgrounds for adventure bikes, with mud pits, balance beams, and industrial obstacles to ride up and over. Many attendees seized the opportunity to train with the world class instructors brought in for the event, namely professional riders Mike Lafferty & Jimmy Lewis. Jimmy, a world class rider trainer and famous ex-racer based out of Nevada, came for the week to provide off road and dual purpose rider training to all skill levels. Every skill level was welcome, because each drill had an infinite level of difficulty, from mild to wild. The other trainer was Mike Lafferty, perhaps the best enduro rider in the history of the sport (8x’s National

americade.com

Champion, including 69 wins!). Mike isn’t a motorcycle instructor by trade, but he agreed to spend 2 hours with several lucky advanced riders. One of them was Brigitte Lacombe. She was training for a woman’s only solo-ride across the desert of Northern Africa. And get this, she had only been riding a motorcycle for 18 months! One month after DirtDaze, she successfully completed her African adventure. DirtDaze also featured guided and unguided adventure bike rides throughout the Adirondacks and Vermont’s Green Mountains. Rides were offered for all skill levels Thursday through Saturday to fun, out of the way (think dirt, rocks, mud) lunch stops. Many riders also headed out on self guided rides, featuring a mammoth ride “requiring a rear end made of depleted uranium.”

It was a whopping 270 mile back road/dirt road loop! Capping off DirtDaze was the Dirt-OHHlympics; a riding demonstration featuring riding icons Jimmy Lewis and World Stunt Champion Teach McNeil. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these two greats “competing” with each other on the playground. They challenged each other to a friendly competition to see who could solve the route first---with the fewest dabs on the course. And the winner was...well, they were pretty much in a dead heat the whole way and had lots of fun doing it! The week wrapped up on Saturday night with the DirtDAZE Party..with food, music, bonfire, and thousands of dollars in prizes. We’re stoked to be coming back in 2017 bigger and better! If you have an adventure bike in your garage, consider joining us in 2017.

“One of the BEST U.S. Tour Companies”

We couldn’t have asked for two more spectacular trips. The weather was fine, the accommodations - top notch, food - delicious, rides - invigorating, views astounding. We literally need a thesaurus to come up with new ways to say “great!” This year we visited two impressive locations: The Green Mountains & Champlain Valley of Vermont and The Presidential Range & Lake Winnepesaukee regions of New Hampshire. Each tour was limited to 100 guests, lasted 4 days, and featured unique routes & interesting stops along the way. There was an abundance of memorable riding in & around areas folks may not think to seek out for themselves. With local guides & area experts... Rolling Thru America is truly an insider’s experience.

46

Rolling Thru Vermont made it’s home base in the lovely Sheraton Hotel in Burlington, VT. Guests were greeted by RTA staff and invited to a cocktail before dinner. The first class treatment continued throughout the weekend as folks partook in massages, guided rides, four star meals, boat rides & more. Not to be outdone by Vermont, Rolling Thru New Hampshire delivered the goods on all the above. Back by popular demand, the RTA staff set up at the Wolfeboro Inn in Wolfeboro, NH and were ready to make this trip one for the record books! On the agenda were high mountain passes, stunning vistas, serene lake views, amazing food & more! With a few surprises along the way a great time was had by all! The 2017 trip is already planned and sign up is open! Reserve your spot now: rollingthruamerica.com
