Director’s Chair As I write this editorial, I’m already looking forward to our 3rd event (#31 in total) with Head Quarters at Fort William Henry Resort. Overlooking the south end of Lake George with arguably the best view of the lake and mountains to the north, its back lawn is so perfect for gatherings like last-year’s first-ever Pig Roast, as well as the other parties, judgings and contests, that we’ll be doing more there this year ! Thank you to the thousands who returned our on-line questionnaire. Your info is helping us refine “the most organized and fun rally anywhere” even more. The 2013 Fact Sheet brochure will surprise you with new choices and maybe a big announcement as well. I still can’t believe that we’ve hosted 30 ‘cades (the first 3 were named “Aspencade”) here in Lake George. It’s a cliche, but it seems like only yesterday when we wondered if a multibrand motorcycle rally would be popular here. Guess we have the answer now, and our 9 full-time office staff and 200+ volunteers have gotten soo good and “on their game” in bringing you the best-ever motorcycle rally, that I have less to do each year, and last year I even found time to take a demo ride on an interesting new dual-sport bike. Would you believe this was only my 2nd Demo ride in 30 years of running Americade?! We hope you’ll enjoy the new format of the Americade Times, and as usual, we welcome your emailed input about anything: compliments, criticisms, you name it. See you in June,

Bill

2012 In Ameri-week started out strong as thousands of pre-registrants showed up Monday morning ready to get the party started! The volunteers at Registration efficiently got folks signed in and on their way. Some took advantage of an early start on collecting stamps for the Scavenger Hunt; while others settled in to their accommodations and got ready to head over to Americade HQ at Fort William Henry for the evening’s Opening Events, for Pre-Registered Americaders. The action was non-stop all night long as the 30th Annual Americade kicked off with more food, more activities, more entertainment, and more door prizes than ever before! The Opening Celebration Dinner & Carnival set the tone for a week of fun, fun, fun! Bright & early Tuesday morning Americaders were ready to go, go, go. With over 65 events & activities there was plenty for everybody to do on the road, off the bike and around the region.

Opening Day Events By all accounts---the most fun ever! The afternoon got started with the Newcomers’ Meeting--hosted by Americade Founders Bill & Gini Dutcher. They and several Volunteers highlighted the What, When & Where of Ameri-week for the uninitiated. In true Americade fashion---the sponsor, J&M, gave away hundreds of dollars in door prizes to a few lucky newbies. Folks with tickets to the Opening Celebration Dinner were served a delicious meal in the elegant White Lion Room. While they dined, the party was getting started outside. Open to all Pre-registered Americaders, the Opening Celebration Carnival provided an evening of hilarious circus acts, delicious desserts, challenging games, rockin’ tunes...and yes...MORE door prizes! All the while enjoying the best view of the lake. A party is always more fun when the participants are part of the show. Monday night was no exception. Americaders donned safety gear and gaming outfits to duke it out in a Jousting Arena and/or on a Sumo Wrestling Ring. Throughout the evening dozens of competitors entertained the crowd with their escapades. If you were looking to grab a seat and kick back---Bobby Dick & Suzie Q’s Rock n’ Roll 101 was the ticket. In between sets, the carnival atmosphere continued as professional jugglers took the stage and entertained with their slap stick brand of comedy. With all this action going on...it was a squeeze for the evening’s sponsor, Rider Magazine, to get in a few words from Greg Drevenstedt and give away a few thousand dollars in spectacular door prizes---but they managed somehow! Don’t forget the extraordinary cake--- which represented some of the exciting rides, activities & events hosted by Americade over the past 30 years! The cake was so impressive, we couldn’t bear to cut into it; instead party-goers were tempted by a variety of other desserts, including coffee & tea, as they partied into the evening under the Big Top Tent overlooking Lake George.

Bright & early every morning, the sound of MiniTours were a wake-up call to others starting their day. 11 tours---5 Guided & 6 Un-guided tours departed every morning beginning at 8 am. Tours spanned all corners of the Lake George Region, into the Adirondacks, though the Hudson River Valley, and across Vermont---covering almost 2,000 miles of open road! As the name implies, Guided Tours were led by experienced leaders and included CB commentary about the areas being traveled. Folks learned about the turn-of-the century Adirondack logging Industry; the importance of the stern-wheel canal boat & the canals themselves; what it took to harness the power of one of the area’s largest man-made lakes; and finally…the evolution of the quaint bridges of yester-year, to the engineering marvels of today, including the brand new arch across Lake Champlain. Un-guided tours also offered as diverse a selection of roads & attractions, ranging from the twists & turns of four of VT’s legendary mountain passes and the breathtaking rock formations in, around & under the Adirondacks, the turbulent waters of the Ottaquechee River, to serene mountain lakes in the Adirondacks, and to getting off the road to take a boat cruise on a mountain lake or check out a meticulously hand-crafted 5,000 sq.ft. diorama. Whether opting for Guided or Un-guided rides---MiniTourers took pleasure in the camaraderie of sharing a mouth-watering meal with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts at some of the best eateries in

the region. MiniTour menus varied; offering up all kinds of tasty selections from Beef Stroganoff, to Cuban Style Pork Roast, to Beer Battered Fish & Chips, to delicious Vegetarian options. Gone are the days of “Chicken: Take-it-or-Leave-it” buffets. Of course every meal included a host of sides, drinks & delectable desserts. During the meal, Tourers had the chance to win some pretty cool prizes contributed by the generous sponsors:

Pig Roast n’ Hoedown As predicted, Tuesday night at Fort William Henry was a hit! Folks with a dinner ticket tucked in to roast Suckling Pig, Smoked Turkey, BBQ Pork Ribs & all the fixins’---finishing off the feast with Baked Cinnamon Apples. Yummmm! The down home fun didn’t stop there…the Big Top Tent was transformed into a Western Saloon—all were welcome to get down with the gritty southern rock and country sounds of the Steven L. Smith Band. Lisa & Billy got folks up on the dance floor, Two-Stepping & Line Dancing the night away. Based on the hundreds who showed up, the Americade Pig Roast n’ Hoedown is quickly becoming an Americade “Must-Do”. With a Great Door Prize from:

Bowling Thunder Quite a group rolled out on Tuesday night for 3 hours of unlimited bowling and a light Italian meal at Spare Time in Lake George Village. Several teams formed up to throw Creeper, Curve Ball & Dime Store deliveries as they competed for prizes based on skill (or lack thereof). The folks from ScalaRider awarded generous prizes for Highest & Lowest score.

Comedy Shows Laughter was on tap Wednesday & Thursday evenings as headliner Alonzo Bodden, winner of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and the opening act--- Chris Monty had the crowd roaring and the rafters shaking. Chris warmed up the crowd with his comical expressions and autobiographical humor---drawn from life, relationships & opinions on the world. Alonzo, an avid motorcyclist himself, has become an Americade regular and the audience loves him. From the minute Alonzo took the stage his quick wit had them rolling in the aisles with laughter as he playfully teased just about every motorcycle group represented in the crowd. Yuasa was on hand at the break to offer up some more fun with some super-charged door prizes for lucky audience members.

Throughout the week bikes from 13 manufacturersBMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Kymco, Motor Trike, Road Smith, Spyder, Star, Thoroughbred, Victory & Yamaha were available at Americade HQ to take for a spin. Hannigan Motorsports, Indian & Motus had their newest models on display at TourExpo at the Million Dollar Beach. New this year---Shoei offered Helmet Demos at Fort William Henry. Before jumping on a machine for a test drive, folks stopped by and got fitted with the right helmet for them! While waiting for a turn on the road, the Factory Hospitality tents were great places to hang out while watching the marvelous collection of bikes roll by.

Adventure Events Motorcycle Riding wasn’t the only way to get an adventure fix at Americade. Thousands hit the region to enjoy some “Off the Road” activities offered to help round out the Adirondack Experience. All week long folks took to the skies, trails, trees, and waterways seeking adventure. The payoff for getting up before the crack of dawn was the view. Folks who took a Hot Air Balloon Ride were treated to fabulous sunrises over the Green Mountains of Vermont and surrounding countryside. If they wanted to sleep in---the sunset rides were just as spectacular! The Saddle Up gang took to the trails Tuesday - Thursday for their adventure--meandering up piney paths, thru grassy meadows and into the surrounding mountains for a spectacular view of Lake George. For those seeking a faster pace White Water Rafting sent hundreds shooting through Class II & III rapids on Wednesday morning. For those wanting a bit more thrill--Friday offered a Full Day experience. New this year the Zip Line & Ropes Course, Tuesday – Friday, had folks gliding thru the forest on zip lines and climbing among the leaves via hanging nets & swinging bridges. Can you meet the Ameri-Challenge and do them all next year?

Boat Cruises

Party Boats & Pleasure Cruises--themed activities or laid back relaxation. Either way thousands of folks had a great time cruising the serene waters of Lake George. Each 2-hour cruise set sail from the foot of Lake George and headed north along hidden coves, open lake & magnificent bays. Ameri-cruisers took in the splendor of stately turnof-the-century homes, the quaint charm of shoreline bungalows with matching boathouses, and the rustic allure of Adirondack style cabins dotted along the water’s edge. Once again, Themed Cruises were in big demand, with a choice of three different cruises sailing Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday evenings. Each had a special, themed menu, entertainment & door prizes. 18

www.americade.com

Tuesday featured the Fiesta Cruise--complete with a delicioso Mexican Buffet and Salsa Dancing with a Cuban twist. Party Cruisers got a chance to compete in the “HowLOW-Can-U-Go” Limbo and to take a whack at the “DOT Approved” Helmet Piñata---it was a bugger to break! The evening’s host, Eli Whitney, from Tour Master, kept the action moving with his witty patter and PLENTY of great door prizes. Wednesday welcomed back the ever popular Mardi Gras Cruise hosted by Dunlop. The Cajun Feast rolled out and some thought they were transported to the Louisiana Bayou as the Zydeco Music filled the air. This fais do do (fay-doe-doe) had revelers shouting “Laissez les bon temps rouler” all the way to shore--Let the Good Times Roll!

Thursday evening cruisers were welcomed aboard the Saint with a traditional island greeting “E komo mai” and a festive lei. The Luau Cruise by Kawasaki featured a show to remember as hip-shakin’ Hula Dancers & thrilling fire-breathers took the stage. The entertainment continued as the dancers encouraged many of the attendees to join in. In addition to all the performances, dancing and the fabulous Hawaiian Buffet—folks received wonderful door prizes. For those looking for less action, we offered seven “Free-Style” dinner cruises where the main attraction was Lake George itself! Ships set sail with a fabulous buffet ready to dish out. Folks grabbed their food and found a place to sit---whether inside or on deck to catch a breeze---the view was spectacular!

The scenery was gorgeous and if you’re a history buff, a Scenic Cruise is perfect as you learn about the entire area in a short time; and get to enjoy a wonderful meal! John Cunningham.- Oyster Bay, NY Glad we picked the Mardi Gras Cruise with the Full Package this year. Great food, rockin’ band, and LOTS of laughs. Thanks for doing it again, Americade! James Le Mare - Fredericksburg, ON Who could ask for anything more? Hanging out with the crew while cruising the lake, taking in the view & having some delicious food. Stunt Shows

2 Time World Trials Champion--Tommi Ahvala, from Helsinki Finland, WOW’d the Fort William Henry crowd Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Eager for an amazing show, folks gathered around the arena early each evening. Anticipation mounted as Tommi’s special trailer unfolded like a giant transformer to reveal several levels of ramps, ledges & obstacles on which he planned to perform his astounding tricks. Tommi rode up vertical walls, jumped huge gaps, and performed 180 degree helicopters & bunny hops. A few daring spectators showed incredible trust in Tommi’s skill as they allowed him to make them part of the show. Tommi pulled off FULL SPEED stoppies--between their legs! As always---Tommi left the crowd wanting more. It was a good thing he performed for three nights! *See page 43 for Saturday’s Stunt Show

Rodeo & BBQ The Wednesday tradition at Painted Pony is always a crowd pleaser. It was a short ride from Lake George where hundreds of cow-pokes & their gals showed up ready to put on the feed bag with a dee-licious Texas BBQ including smoked pork & bbq chicken with all the fixin’s & dessert to boot. When the chow-wagon closed up, the crowd moseyed over to the corral’s covered stadium seating to watch Bull Ridin’, Bronc Bustin’ & Steer Ropin’ by professional cowboys & cowgirls competing on a pro-circuit for points & a big $ purse. The boys from Cycle Solutions were on hand to award 100s of dollars in great door prizes. The night didn’t come to a close until the cows came home.

Field Events Ready, Set---SLOW! The Thursday afternoon contests tested the skill and agility of dozens of motorcyclists as they participated in the Slow Ride and Golf Ball Balance at Fort William Henry. As the name would suggest---the Slow Ride winner was the last across the line. It took some skill to maneuver this course without putting down a toe. In the Golf Ball Balance riders took on a partner --- who hung off the back of the motorcycle while carefully balancing golf balls atop traffic cones as the driver traveled a straight line to the finish. Leather Outlets was on hand to congratulate the winners with great door prizes and trophies! TourExpo....one stop shopping for all your motorcycle needs. Once you picked out your new ride during one of the many Factory Demos, it was time to get geared up at TourExpo at the Million Dollar Beach and The Lake George Forum were the places to go. Getting between the two venues was a comfortable & relaxing experience in the air conditioned TourExpo Shuttle Bus that ran every five minutes. Eager shoppers found everything they’ve been craving; and some even bought a few things they needed. There were over 250 vendors to choose from. For folks who caught the Fashion Shows at FWH the night before---they were able to find the leathers, jackets, Ts, footwear & accessories they loved on stage at the sponsors’ booths --- if that wasn’t enough---there were dozens more vendors with great deals to choose from. When it came to pimping out your ride, or highlighting what’s already cool--“Spent a lot but budgeted for it! Like a kid in a candy store!!” Scott Silverberg Barrie, Canada

With several Helmet and Communication vendors to choose from the options were endless. Many drove away ready to rock and talk! When shoppers needed a break from all the eye candy or to get off their feet there were plenty of food vendors available to give a boost of energy and a seat to refuel for a few more hours of shopping. With all these goods & services in one place--there was no need to go anywhere else! Just a reminder---if you saw something you liked at TourExpo this year and didn’t get a chance to pick it up---check out www.americade.com for a listing of all the vendors you saw this year. Featured Speakers & Seminars Collectively, Fred Rau and Greg Drevenstedt have spent well over 50 years (combined) putting themselves & their machines thru the paces in pursuit of excellence in the motorcycle industry.

Greg Drevenstedt; Rider Magazine

Fred Rau; The Motorcycle Touring Bible

These guys have been where and done what most of us aspire to do...travel the world in search of the best roads, test some of the newest motorcycles & latest gear, and best of all--getting to call this madness “work. Both have been in the business of describing their experiences and helping others get out there and be the best they can be on 2 wheels. On Tuesday & Thursday evenings hundreds of attendees gathered at the Ft William Henry Conference Center to be entertained by the anecdotes & antics of these fellas. They discussed nitty-gritty details of everything from mistakes made & lessons learned to once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Throughout the week, dozens of other motorcycle industry experts met with Americaders, at the Fort William Henry Conference Center, during Daily Seminars (9a-4pm). Daily Seminars were the place to discuss and learn about the specifics of all kinds of motorcycle gear, riding techniques, travel & more. Not to mention---the airconditioned building was a great place to spend some time between Demo Rides, Judging, and other activities at Americade.

Ft Museum & Ghost Tours FWH is not only the Americade HQ, the historic fort also played a part in shaping the region and the country. Americaders had the opportunity to tour the facility with guides in period costumes and learn how FWH played a part in some of the bloody battles that created America. Later in the evening, brave Americaders gathered to meet denizens of days goneby. Ghost hunters roamed the streets of Lake George and explored the nooks & crannies of FWH in search of native chiefs, brave soldiers, humble housemaids and any other spirits looking to share their tale. 30

3-Course Dinners As one of the many choices in the Full Registration Package, participating Americaders were treated to a night of fabulous food at one of our three 3-Course Dinners, hosted by the folks at Tour Master & Cortech, in the FWH White Lion Rm or one at the FWH Conference Center---as part of the Red Knight International Motorcycle Club’s annual dinner. After a full day of riding, shopping, and exciting activities--the gracious setting, spectacular views, wonderful door prizes, and friends---old & new--- complimented a tasty meal. After dinner, folks could wander around the grounds, enjoy the million dollar view & take in the rest of that evening’s activities.

If you haven’t yet reserved accommodations, try these tips: • Check out the Accommodation Guide on the preceding pages. • Don’t just call the first few places in the guide; they tend to get called the most. • Call the Chambers of Commerce who advertise here for recommendations. • Many small hotels don’t open up their reservation system until April, so a call then will often have success and a lower rate. • There are many small towns within a 25 minute ride and they tend to have more available space and lower rates.

Nights of Lights Well into the dark of Wednesday evening the Functional Lighting Contest--a.k.a “Battle of the Bulbs”, sponsored by PIAA, commenced. The focus of this competition was to shed light on the practical side of illumination. Contestants were challenged, in two classes-Stock Plus & Open, to bathe the roadway with mega-lumens without dazzling oncoming motorists. Thursday evening was alight with the magic of the Light Parade, the majestic glow of Mike Hernandez’s Hot Air Balloon, and the Decorative Light Contest. The Motorcycle Merry-Go-Round of lit bikes encircled the brilliantly colored hot air balloon as hundreds of spectators enjoyed the display. Later that night, many of the parade participants were judged in the Decorative Lighting Contest sponsored by Light Them Up. Two classes-Standard & Computer, sorted the field to determine who was the most creative in the use of lighting to define their ride.

Friday Night Spectacu Americade’s biggest night of the week was packed with thrilling rides, a funny water show, delicious food, a great band, special awards, spectacular fireworks, and fabulous door prizes inside The Great Escape amusement park. Dinner Ticket holders were allowed early access to the park-the first 1000 motorcycles got to drive right in and park near all the action! When was the last time you could ride inside an amusement park? Before dinner several rides including the Giant Ferris Wheel & Sasquatch Tower were open for all those wanting to build up an appetite. The rides kept running until 8 pm so folks could go back for more. If the rides weren’t your speed, Groove Therapy provided entertainment for the big crowd as they got settled for an evening to remember. The all-you-could-eat buffet was served between 6:30-7:45, to a hungry, happy bunch of folks. Abundant Chicken Cordon Bleu, Beef Tips, Baked Ziti, rice, vegetables & salad were served up hot & fresh. To round out the meal, folks helped themselves to yummy desserts & coffee. The main park gates opened later at 7:30 pm for Americaders who came in time for Free Dessert & Coffee, Awards, Major Door Prize Drawings & Fireworks. Along the path to the Party Pavilion, the crowd was invited to stay and be amazed by the hilarious Penguin Water Show. As all the party-goers got themselves settled with desserts, coffee & tea under the pavilion, winners of major events & contests from throughout the week were announced, awards were presented and Over $20,000 in goodies were awarded! In addition to the list of Friday’s Major Door Prize Winners, Scavenger Hunt & AMA Poker Run Winners were awarded special prizes by Scala Rider & AMA, respectively. In a show of EXTREME generosity, the evening sponsor, Tour Master handed out hundreds of dollars in additional prizes to all the contest winners announced that night! The Awards Ceremony concluded with a BANG as the Tour Master Fireworks Display (sync’d to music) lit up the summer skies & rattled windows for miles around! Groove Therapy capped off the evening with more music & dancing for those who didn’t want the party to end!

Sensational Saturday

A hearty meal at the convenient Geico Get Up & Go Breakfast, served up by Tri-County United Way, was the ticket for Americaders getting ready for another full day. And a full day it was...as things got going, folks showed their playful side during the Saturday Parade Costume Judging. This year Ameri-paraders rolled into The Wild West Ranch, where they were greeted by the Lake George Rotary and treated to a finger lickin’ bbq of Chicken Teriyaki, Marinated Ribs & all the fixin’s. There was plenty of seating around the corral or under cover in the barn, on the porch & in the saloon. Ben & Jerry’s of Lake George was on-hand to treat folks to something sweet...free ice cream! Throughout the party the Stony Creek Band kept folks stompin’& swinging with rockin’ country tunes. Women’s MotoTrials American Champion, Carol Allen and her brother, David AllenNew England Trials Association MotoTrials Champion were on hand to wow the crowd with their gravity-defying riding stunts. Those interested in trying their skill were invited to hop on one of these stripped down trials bikes and give the balancing act a go. Other Events...by There isn’t enough time to pack all the great riding, entertainment & activities into just one Ameri-week. In response, Americade has rolled out two end-of-summer events to keep the riding fires going thru the long eastern winter. • Rolling Thru America We’ve put together an event for those looking for a high-end, luxury motorcycling mini-vacation. We take care of all the planning---the room you sleep in, the food you eat, and the roads you travel. All you have to do is show up with a smile! • Killington Classic Lookin’ for a laid back, long Labor Day weekend of riding and hanging out with friends? Look no further than the Green Mountains of Vermont. There’s enough going on to fill the whole weekend, or it can be a fun way to spend the day. Your call--Your way.

Each year, 100 lucky attendees eagerly anticipate where Americade’s tour company---Rolling Thru America will bring them next. We’ve already visited the Lake Champlain & Green Mountain regions of Vermont and the seaside ports of mid-coast Maine. For 2012, the new destination was upstate New York’s Finger Lakes Wine Region-many say this was the best tour yet. Attendees came from across the U.S. to the host hotel on the shores of gorgeous Seneca Lake. Daily tours guided them along roads designed by (we assume) a touring motorcyclist – winding but not twisty, elevation gains/drops but not steep, and pool-table smooth pavement. Attendees loved the wide open rural scenery, with long low rolling hills ; many, many lake views from above, and many long lake side roads below; beautiful vineyards aplenty, quaint towns, Amish farms and their horse drawn buggies, and unexpectedly dramatic waterfalls. Lunch and dinner stops were superb, including meals at a nearly 200 year old mansion, lunch at a beautiful 4 star Inn overlooking the cleanest lake in the U.S, and dinner accessed via a water taxi. This tour sold out within a few weeks, and many said it was the best tour they’ve ever been on. Don’t miss an amazing motorcycling weekend; check www.rolllingthruamerica.com for news about 2013’s all NEW tour!

Truly, the perfect start to a great weekend! TOUR EXPO / AMERICADE KILINGTON CLASSIC LOGO 61346 • 5.25.11 • MARK

Friday night’s Grand Parade was led by Vermont’s Lieutenant Governor - Phil Scott and the Rutland Chapter of the Red Knights. Bikes were two abreast for the 12 mile mountain ride to final destination --- the Rutland Downtown Block Party where food, music, dancing & door prizes from American Bagger filled the night for hundreds of party-goers. The days were filled with cruising some of the best riding roads in the U.S., made better by many miles of new, perfectly smooth pavement, courtesy of tropical storm Irene. Two professionally guided tours with luncheon & door prizes: • Covered Bridges sponsored by Tour Master--- explored several historic Covered Bridges and scenic byways of the region. • High Gaps “Ride the Green Serpent” sponsored by RoadRUNNER ---traveled over 500 turns, twists & switchbacks along the “spine” of the Green Mountains.

Two unguided (maps , directions & Door prizes provided) tours: • The Green Mountain Poker Run sponsored by AMA • The VT Valley Run & Scavenger Hunt sponsored by ScalaRider

Saturday & Sunday were days for Judging, Games, Contests & Stunts...

• People’s Choice Bike Judging was a huge hit. The “eye candy” was on display with five different Judging categories. The coveted Best in Show was won by Peg Martin & her Pink Ribbon Bike. • The Slow Race crept along as riders competed for last over the finish line. • Bury the Plunger---a not so serious test of agility & endurance. • The stuntmen from Blox Starz performed six shows over two days & the crowd was wowed each & every time. Burnouts, stoppies, wheelies & riding while standing on the motorcycle were just of few of the tricks performed.

The Full Throttle Party & Fireworks sponsored by American Iron, was the weekend finale. The Steve Smith Band jammed ---between sets door prizes & awards were given out and the shirts came off for the Big Belly Wet T-Shirt Contest. The evening was topped off with an unforgettable fireworks display. Mark your calendars, Killington Classic 2013 Aug 29th – Sept 1st You Do Not Want To Miss This!
