Motivated to move another notch up the career ladder or completely change course, many mid-life professionals enter Washington University’s University College every year for the convenience of evening education, summer school and program overviews. No matter the degree they pursue, returning to school years removed from their test-taking days can be overwhelming at first. But, as these four U College students found,

getting a diploma later in life is not only absolutely attainable, but also enormously gratifying.

A CHAMPION OF CHANGE ◆

A former auto mechanic turned prospective college professor revels in reinvention.

harleen Vocca clearly remembers the first time she completely switched gears on her career path. A mechanic at a General Motors dealership, she was beneath a car changing a fuel filter when gas spilled all over her and ignited an aha-moment. “I remember thinking, ‘You know, I really don’t think this is for me,’” says Vocca, 45, who had graduated from the automotive program at Ranken Technical College. Thus began a job hunt—one that landed her in an entirely different industry: Clothing. A seven-year stint at vintage shop Hullabaloo later led her, through connections, to her current position as eBay sales manager for Donnaland Vintage Variety. In fall 2005, although happy with her day job, Vocca yearned yet again to broaden her horizons, this time by returning to school. She enrolled in Washington University’s University College and made a goal to graduate before her almost-out-of-high-school children started college. A flexible schedule from her Donnaland boss and a full-time student financial aid package landed her back in the classroom. Vocca started the first semester as an English major but then changed course to Anthropology after an Introduction to

Archeology class piqued her interest. She later discovered from an Egyptian Archeology teacher that she could gain credit hours through a field school sponsored by St. Louis Community College, and that led her to a medieval castle excavation in Macedonia—one of the most exciting experiences of her life, she says. “Washington University absolutely changed my life,” says Vocca, who calls herself a cheerleader for the U College. “I don’t understand why more people don’t do it. I think it is the best program around for adults who want to go back to school and complete a degree or start fresh when they don’t have a college background. Perhaps some people are intimidated because it’s Washington U. But if you’re willing to work hard and communicate with your advisors, you’ll make great progress.” Vocca certainly did. She graduated with honors in May and now plans to attend graduate school. In the more immediate future, she would like to work in a museum or in the cultural resource management field. And, then, somewhere down the line, she’d like to teach college. University College left her with all kinds of options—something she’s certain to take full advantage of. alivemag.com

CHANGING CO U RSE ◆

A U College degree helped Jim Moll breathe some much-needed life into his day job.

fter two decades in the same profession, Jim Moll started to suffer major burn out. Eager for a fresh start, he enrolled in Washington University’s University College to explore other opportunities. Moll, who had logged long hours in mortgage banking trust operations, decided to study Human Resources Management with the intent of becoming a career counselor. He approached the move with an open mind: If he didn’t land an HR job after graduation, he figured he’d still come out on top because he’d sharpened his skills.

Not having taken a class since receiving his bachelor’s degree in Communications 20 years ago, Moll, 44, eased his way back into school with a couple undergraduate courses first. Along with his first class, Social Psychology, came his first challenge. “The [younger] students could memorize like sponges, and there I was trying to remember all these stats,” he says. Needless to say, Moll didn’t fare well on his first round of tests. He quickly got into the groove, though, after his professor advised him to “take a little more time and relax.” “The next week, I got an A,” Moll says. “After that, I was ready to move on to graduate work.” Moll took a sabbatical from his job and completed 10 credit hours in one semester. “The wonderful thing about the Human Resources program is that there’s a variety of electives you can take on Saturdays,” he says. “If you’re willing to balance some of your vacation to take some Fridays off, you can take some Thursday, Friday and Saturday classes. You can get a credit and a half for taking a weekend course for some of your electives.” Everything considered, Moll found school to be much more enjoyable the second time around. And, he even discovered advantages to being one of the oldest students in the classroom. “One thing that’s very refreshing is that you can bring a whole different level of learning to the classroom,” he says. “I brought a lot of life experience. When you’re sitting in a classroom with a variety of different ages, and someone says, ‘That could never happen in the workforce.’ You can say, ‘Yeah, it can.’” In the end, in addition to a master’s degree, Moll came away with an important realization about his professional aspirations. “I’ve been working in large institutions my entire career, and I may have been working for the wrong type,” he says. “Banking tends to be more bureaucratic. I like to be more entrepreneurial.” He now has the chance to do just that. Although opportunity knocked in a different field than human resources, Moll accomplished what he initially set out to do. He landed a job in a new industry—publishing—and he’s welcoming the new experiences that come along with it.

Squeezing U College courses into her not-a-minute-to-spare schedule proved to be a move Carol Epstein is extremely thankful she made.

T

o say Carol Epstein has kept busy for most of her adult life would be an understatement. Before moving to St. Louis 13 years ago, she worked in the fashion design and retail industry and traveled fairly extensively due to her husband’s job. At one time she served as the manager of a National Register of Historic Places project to restore and preserve her former home near Fort Leonard Wood and also tackled a similar renovation in Oregon. These days, she writes children’s stories and commits much of her time championing for animal welfare and humane education. When Epstein, 54, realized she wanted some flexibility in her schedule to conquer more, she decided to take the opportunity to round out her education. “I’ve always had an insatiable desire for learning and being around academia,” she says. “Washington U was in my backyard. I had heard about the U College and the wonderful classes, and that’s what ultimately got me back in the classroom.” The addition to her super-busy schedule required a slight cutback in some activities, but she enjoyed the evening classes and quickly found going back to school worthwhile.

33

Her main apprehension with enrolling in the U College was her age—a fear that was quickly alleviated in one of her first classes. “Ninety percent of the people were younger students,” she says. “It was amazing, though, because I felt really at ease.” Epstein, who majored in Anthropology with a minor in Classics and received a master of Liberal Arts with a thesis on Native American studies, considers her decision to return to the classroom one of her best ever. “I’ve had a full, rich life to date,” she says. With her constant drive to accomplish more, including going back to the U College to obtain a doctorate, there’s no doubt it will continue to be fulfilling. ALIVE STL TO DO washington university

PERFECTING A PASTIME ◆

Kathy Brown proves it’s never too late to pursue a lifelong passion.

W

hen Kathy Brown reached her late 40s, she began considering what she wanted to do during retirement. As she weighed her options, her childhood dream of becoming a writer stuck in the forefront of her mind. “I thought, ‘I’d like to give that another go,’” she says. Growing up, Brown, now 53, wrote plays, short stories and articles for her high school newspaper. Her first of two bachelor’s degrees was in English, and she worked as an editor for a publishing company after college. As she started a family, though, she switched gears to nursing (her second bachelor’s degree) and medical research. All the while, her passion for writing never faded. Familiar with the University College through her job as a registered nurse at the Washington University School of Medicine, Brown decided

to enroll in the creative writing program. She took one evening class a week and two intensive summer courses. After five years, in August 2008, she received a creative writing certificate. “This was really just for personal enrichment. I’m a big believer in education,” says Brown, who also has a master’s degree in Healthcare Services. Although she’s still not quite ready to trade in patients for readers, her writing has started to gain exposure. Two of her poems from a poetry course were published in Washington University’s literary magazine, and a freelance course helped her land a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on a local novelist. What’s more, she posts a weekly column on healthy foods at bellaonline.com, a women’s interest website. “It’s really cool to have this all come together,” she says. washington university TO DO ALIVE STL
