Look at my baby. I mean it. Look at him.

See that adorable face? Those chubby cheeks? You don't honestly expect me to put those cute toes in a stroller so I can torture myself on a 10-mile run through Forest Park, do you? Of course, that had been my plan BEFORE Finn was born in 2009. Back in those heady, over-achieving days, I was determined to lose my baby weight AND train for a half-marathon just as soon as my son arrived. Yes, I had motherhood all figured out. Then reality set in. Within weeks of Finn's birth, I was back to rising at 3:30 every morning, hoping to be reasonably coherent by the time I went live on the air two hours later. By mid-afternoon the LAST thing on my mind was a marathon, unless you count the times I was running to the store for baby food. Besides, who has time to exercise when you're juggling work and family? I also craved time for other things I enjoy, such as SLEEP. Exercise? Are you kidding me? I owed it to my myself not to. At least that's how I rationalized the less-than-perfect shape I was in when Finn celebrated his first birthday. Then I learned about 20 Minutes to Fitness, a place where you can supposedly get fit in just 20 minutes a week. I say “supposedly� because I was skeptical. It went against everything I have ever heard and believed about fitness. But by this time, my knees hurt and my back ached. And 20 Minutes to Fitness' protocol was, by all accounts, medically based and performed on special physical therapy equipment. I mean, doctors work out there. Long story short: I tried it. And I liked it. Encouraged by my personal coach, I today work harder during those 20 minutes than any other time all week. Afterwards, I also feel better. My muscles are toned. My aches have gone away. My clothes fit better.

hen this issue hits the stands, we’ll all be celebrating a new year. For many, this means setting fresh resolutions; for some, it means making changes in their careers or starting new businesses; for us all, starting over at January 1 is symbolic of new beginnings, no matter whether they’re personal or professional. At ALIVE, this month is the time we focus on a particular set of “new beginnings”—weddings! Every January we put together our mega-section, “ALIVE Bride,” which tops out this year at almost 50 pages. The feature, which spotlights premier local wedding vendors, shares the stories of creative St. Louis couples and offers scores of ideas on how to make your big day special, starts on p. 57. As always, our guide includes a list of the city’s of-the-moment venues, planners, florists, bakeries, caterers and bridal boutiques (p.92) to simplify planning for the local modern bride to be. We also added something extra this year: ideas for the bridesmaids and groomsmen, from accessories and gifts, to suits and dresses. The ALIVE bride tends to be a woman who wants things that are unique, unexpected and on-trend, so rest assured we talked to the vendors who are not only creative and passionate about what they do, but who are also willing to push the creative envelope. This month, writer Matt Sorrell not only had the task of writing about a local restaurant and bar serving some seriously good spiked coffee (p.30), but he also spoke with NASCAR star Carl Edwards. Though not much of a speed demon himself, Matt was more than happy to vicariously get on the NASCAR fast track with this buzzy young athlete for this month’s people spotlight (p.34). When he’s not strictly observing the speed limit on area highways and byways and ensuring his hands are at 10 and 2 on the wheel at all times, Matt can be found at home in Richmond Heights with his wife Beth and their menagerie of dogs and cats.

After graduating with a journalism degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Marylyn has returned to her hometown to pursue her career as a freelance writer. Fashion, art and travel are her passions. Whether at a gallery opening, traveling from state to state or just browsing trendy boutiques, Marylyn is happiest when indulging her creative, wanderlustful spirit. This month, Marylyn researched the top cultural events to write this month’s calendar (p.20) and also wrote the ALIVE Bride wedding stories (p.68).

For this month’s issue, Jonathan’s camera, Clicky, got up close and personal with the coffee cocktails at Cyrano’s. Clicky has been on a caffeine high ever since, giving him energy to shoot the weddings, families and editorial work that Jonathan has planned for him in 2011.

St. Louis photographer Carmen Troesser looks forward to her time in the ALIVE studio shooting the latest styles. The monthly shoots are a nice change for Troesser, who also photographs a lot of food. “A pair of boots don’t melt or wilt after five minutes,” she says. Grand Cycle Station by Cristy Miller Over the last few years, more commuters have been swapping their cars for cycles—and now they have a place to park their rides Downtown. The Downtown Bicycle Station is opening soon in the 411 Building at 10th and Locust streets and includes 1,450 square feet of space with 100-plus bike racks, showers and locker rooms, and offers 24-hour secure access. The new commuter bicycle station was developed in an effort to help make the city more livable and will also become home to Trailnet, the local nonprofit dedicated to creating more active communities in St. Louis. What’s more, the space will also be home to Downtown’s first full-service bike shop, Urban Shark, opened by Mike Weiss of Big Shark Bicycle Co. in The Loop. The shop will offer bike equipment, repairs and bike rentals and is set to open later this month or early February.

> When a new restaurant hits all the right notes—a well thought-out menu, aptly designed space for the neighborhood and killer creative drinks—I call it restaurant magic. You notice it on your first visit and it just instantly feels like the place has always been there. I experienced such a reaction recently at Rosalita’s Cantina, the new Tex-Mex restaurant that opened Downtown in late November. The Cantina Located in what was once a deserted corner in the 1235 Washington Avenue building at 13th Street, Rosalita’s is more than a spot that serves expected Southwestern fare. The atmosphere pulls you in and a plate of sizzling steak fajitas and a pomegranate 26 ALIVE STL JANUARY 2011

As with any good cantina, the drinks are almost as equally as important as the food. And Rosalita’s make a stiff house margarita, most with Don Julio, like the El Presidente, with Anejo and Grand Marnier—I liked the nice peppery edge to it. Rose’s favorite is also recommended; it combines Cuervo Gold with Triple Sec and a house mix. The specialty margaritas include interesting variations like a Creamsicle with vanilla ice cream and orange juice and a Vegas margarita with Red Bull, peach Schnapps and peach purée. The Cuisine If you’re looking for an authentic Mexican cuisine experience, this isn’t it. But, then again, Rosalita’s isn’t trying to be. Expect twists on Tex-Mex favorites that are generous in size, starting with the stuffed jalapeños appetizer. Five large jalapeños are stuffed with a blend of shrimp, garlic and Oaxaca cheese and served roasted. The heat of the jalapeños balances nicely with the shrimp and cheese. Salads are served extra large with a bounty of toppings

and ingredients in any one you order—whether it’s the sweet and spicy red pepper jicama salad with mandarin oranges, diced jicama and light lemon honey vinaigrette; or the avocado salad with oranges, sliced cucumber and avocado and an excellent jalapeño and basil vinaigrette. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas and fajitas allow for choice of protein, from chicken to beef to shrimp or pork. I liked the choice of sauces for the burritos, with a spicy Jalapeño Ranchero blend standing out among the rancherito, tomatillo and chile con queso options. Among the specialty platters, the Tinga chicken trumped all other options, including lime-marinated mahi mahi baked in a banana leaf, extremely spicy poblano peppers and jumbo shrimp with chile and onions. The shredded white meat chicken is braised in a chipotle tomato broth that is both light and flavorful and then sprinkled with cilantro.

What I like most about Rosalita’s is the large, loft-like interior; soft wood tones surround the 200-seat space and exposed brick walls lend an organic coziness with an urban vibe. A handful of table tops, roomy booths and a main bar dominate the front area and the back room features a few more spacious elongated booths and a second floor seating area.

A look at the farm-fresh ingredients of the Lucas Park Grille local market salad.

> The farm-to-table movement in St. Louis has never been stronger— chefs and restaurants are advocating and championing local, seasonal ingredients and responsible agriculture more than ever. One of our favorites is Lucas Park Grille; over the last three years, the menu has evolved to focus on inspired, locally sourced fare, thanks in part to Executive Chef Kyle Patterson. And one of the highlights has been the Local Market Salad. Introduced on the menu in 2010, it features farmfresh ingredients all from within 150 miles of the restaurant. Here we take a closer look at this seasonal salad.

1. Apple Cider Vinaigrette The salad is drizzled with a light apple cider vinaigrette, which is made in house with a combination of olive oil and garlic with apple cider from Hawkins/Schwartz Orchard in Carbondale, IL.

6. Chicken Chef Patterson prefers pastured poultry, a healthier and cleaner way of raising chickens on fresh green grass. For all his poultry needs, Chef Patterson relies on Pilgrims’ Acres near Foristell, MO, a local farm that produces only all-natural, antibiotic and hormone-free chicken.

2. Pecans Adding a subtle nutty sweetness and complexity in flavor are the Missouri Northern pecans tossed in; these natural pecans are certified organic and have a unique taste than other pecans.

5. Apples Sliced Winesap apples from Hawkins/Schwartz orchard are added for extra flavor—this heirloom apple has a slightly spicy and tart flavor and can be utilized throughout the winter.

3. Roasted Beets During colder months, Chef Patterson incorporates golden or red beets from Thies Farm and Greenhouse. A versatile vegetable, the beets are roasted, adding a natural sweetness and slightly buttery flavor to this fresh salad.

4. Mixed Leaf Greens The foundation of any fresh salad are the greens; the Market salad combines red oak lettuce with baby romaine. Known for its brilliant color, red oak is crisp and tender and mixes well in texture and flavor with baby romaine.

A local restaurant serves a slew of creative coffee-centric cocktails. There was a time when if you were looking for a coffee cocktail, chances are you were limited to that old standby, Irish Coffee. But java-based cocktails are beginning to evolve beyond that basic shot-and-a-cup paradigm into something much more flavorful and creative. Several area eateries and watering holes are now offering sophisticated bean-based libations that take the concept to a new realm of caffeinated goodness. But few have reached the coffee heights of the drink menu at Cyrano’s Cafe in Webster Groves. Known for decadent desserts, Cyrano’s also features an impressive slate of coffee cocktails. These libations are the creation of general manager Melissa Smith, who over a period of years has built the beverage bill of fare to include 10 custom drinks, all utilizing Metropolis coffee and premium spirits. Smith says the concept evolved pretty simply: she liked a good after-dinner cocktail as well as a hot cup of Joe (plus the restaurant had this great espresso machine), so putting her background as both a barista and a bartender to work, she started experimenting. According to Smith, coffee makes for a great multi-dimensional cocktail, offering another level of flavor and complexity to the mix, and a multitude of flavors, from orange to vanilla to chocolate, pair perfectly with it. An extremely tasteful example is one of Smith’s most popular creations, Cafe Italiano, which features Tuaca, Amaretto and whipped cream. Smith says she’s not in a hurry to expand her coffee offerings, though recently she tasted a walnut liqueur that may make its way into a new caffeinated creation in the near future. > My New Year’s resolution is to become a Renaissance woman. Remember reading about those types? The dynamic ladies and gents of the 17th century who could play classical piano, effortlessly sketch a portrait and speak fluently in foreign languages about the intricacies of literature and fine art—all in their downtime? I want to be like that. Realistically, I won’t be discussing Picasso’s Blue Period in Mandarin Chinese with a French harpsichord composer anytime soon (I wish), but this year, I do plan to fully appreciate the lively art scene we are so lucky to enjoy as St. Louisans. Here are the four exhibitions I’m excited to check out this month; and fingers crossed that this time next year, I’ll be a card-carrying art snob.

The Show: Christina Shmigel:

“This City, Daily Rising” The Place: Bruno David Gallery

In her first U.S. solo exhibition since 2005, artist Christina Shmigel brings three interrelated installations to the Bruno David Gallery (January 21-February 26). Shmigel is noted for playing with scale and size in her installations, and in this exhibition, “This City, Daily Rising” she represents themes from Shanghai, the vibrant city where she works and lives. I, too, have fallen in love with a far-away city, and I’m curious to see how Shmigel interprets her understanding of the city she adores while at the same exploring how we as humans become familiar with the world through associations and projections and how the inanimate objects that surround us can overflow with meaning.

The Place: Contemporary

Art Museum St. Louis. The Contemporary brings in two intriguing artists for the museum’s first Opening Nights of the year on January 21 (through May 1). American painter Richard Aldrich will showcase 20 of his large-scale works that I’m excited to see up close. Aldrich is quite the Renaissance man himself when it comes to style; some of his works are spare and abstract, others are collage-like paintings, some incorporate text. His work explores painting’s recent history without merely retelling it; instead, Aldrich appears to tell a deeply personal story on each canvas. What’s more, Aldrich will also present a selection of 19th and 20th century paintings from Saint Louis Art Museum’s permanent collection.

The Show:

Manon de Boer The Place: Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis Also showing at CAMSL’s Opening Night is Manon de Boer, a creator of stunning cinematic portraits. With her camera, she captures friends, dancers, writers, musicians and other creatives in awe-inspiring explorations of memory and the passage of time. De Boer’s CAMSL exhibition will be the Dutch artist’s first major solo show in the United States. I’ve read up on her piece, “Presto, Perfect Sound” in which she filmed composer and violinist, George Van Dam, performing a notoriously difficult violin sonata. To create a “perfect” performance, de Boer edited together the audio track from five different recordings and then edited the film to match the soundtrack. It’s a brilliant study of taking the traditional dominance of image over sound in cinema and turning it on its head.

The Show: Time Wounds All Heels The Place: White Flag Projects

I’ve never been disappointed in any exhibit I’ve experienced at White Flag. This alternative art gallery always features progressive exhibits from well-known and up-and-coming local, national and international artists. Opening on January 15 is “Time Wounds All Heels,” a group show featuring 12 artists of diverse mediums, from printmaking to photography to painting (through February 26). Always a fan of a witty pun, I’m particularly interested in seeing what artist Jaime Pitarch brings to the exhibit. He often implements visual punning to change the way we see everyday objects. The Barcelona-born Pitarch is another Renaissance man who works in sculpture, drawing, performance art and video.

Fast and Furious Carl Edwards drives NASCAR into the future. By Matt Sorrell

> Even though NASCAR is a billion-dollar business with an international fan base, it still suffers from an identity problem. A lot of people can’t get past the stereotypical down-home, good-ol’-boy image that stock car racing still conjures up, and in some cases, promotes. But Columbia, Mo., native Carl Edwards is doing his part to turn that image around. At 31, Edwards is one of the young guns redefining NASCAR as a professional sport on par with the likes of the NFL or NBA. His success on the track is undeniable: He finished second in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2008, and came close again this year, finishing fourth overall. From his lofty perch at the top of the sport, Edwards promotes a vision of himself as not just a guy who drives really fast, but as a professional athlete and savvy business man.

“I used to sit around, drink soda, eat fast food three times a day and never thought about working out,” he says. Ironically, it was Edwards’ intro to NASCAR that sent him to the gym. “In my first NASCAR truck race in Memphis, I literally thought I had a problem with the truck I was driving. I thought something was on fire because I was so hot,” he says. “I realized then that being in better shape and taking care of your body is hugely important.” Currently he works with Carmichael Training Systems, which trains pro athletes like Lance Armstrong, and when he travels, Edwards tries to make sure he has access to a gym or someplace to run. Fitness is even closer to his heart now; Edwards was recently named to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Nutrition. Just one look at the sponsorship decals covering the typical NASCAR race car (and driver), it’s obvious that the sport is a commercial concern. But instead of lending his name to fast food companies or auto parts stores, Edwards has chosen to go his own way off the track. He recently signed a deal with Avon for a signature cologne, called Turn 4XT, and he’s also involved in promoting new musical talent with his own record label, Back 40 Records, which has a roster of talent that includes hip-hop artist Omega and folk-rocker Jonathan Truth. He also gives back by being the national spokesman for Speedway Children’s Charities, and doing charity work around Columbia.

While the way Edwards handles his career is most modern, he came up in the racing ranks old-school style, by going to races and driving every chance he got. He got the racing bug early on from his father, who used to race VW-powered cars all over Missouri and Illinois. Then when he was a teenager, Edwards saw local boy Kenny Schrader enter the NASCAR ranks, and realized he might be able to actually race for a living. “I just devoted myself to learning everything I could about the sport,” he says. “I used to pass out these corny little business cards that said, ‘If you’re looking for a driver, you’re looking for me.’” I’d go to races all over and ask people if I could drive their race cars.” Edwards took full advantage of the racing opportunities in the area, competing at tracks from Godfrey, Ill., to Pevely, Mo., and all points between, including the late, lamented Gateway International Raceway, just across the river in Madison, Ill., which closed October 23. Even though he’s one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR, Edwards hasn’t left Missouri for the

racing meccas of the Deep South; he still calls Columbia home. “I really like it here,” he says. “I travel all over the world and there are not a lot of places that have more to offer than Missouri.” In the last couple of years, Edwards has gotten married and had a baby, which has changed the way he approaches his life on the track. “I look at my career differently,” he says. “I need to go to the racetrack and give 100 percent because once I go home, I can’t take the racetrack with me anymore. I have to be there and be a good husband and father. That’s the most important thing to me in my life.” Edwards says he hopes that focus helps him achieve his primary career goal of winning a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. While he’s confident in his ability to win that championship, he also has faith in the future of his sport. “NASCAR grew in popularity because it’s hugely entertaining, it’s very competitive and had a lot of personalities, people who were interesting to watch,” he says. “As long as we, as a sport, can continue doing those things and not fall victim to ‘this week’s ratings’ or ‘this one poll,’ I think it’ll be healthy as long as the greater economy is healthy.”

Tortellini Soup (Serves 4) WHAT YOU NEED:

• 1 package (16 ounces) lean sweet Italian turkey sausage links, casings removed • 2 teaspoons drained roasted garlic • 2 cans (14 to 14 1/2 ounces each) less sodium chicken broth (3 1/2 cups) • 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) Schnucks petite-diced tomatoes with green chiles • 3/4 cup water • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning • 1 package (9 ounces) refrigerated three-cheese tortellini • 1 package (5 to 6 ounces) baby spinach WHAT TO DO:

1. Heat 4- to 5-quart saucepot or Dutch oven over high heat 2 minutes to preheat. Add sausage and garlic and cook 4 to 5 minutes or until browned, breaking up sausage with side of spoon. Add broth, tomatoes with their juice, water and Italian seasoning; cover and heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; simmer 10 minutes to blend flavors.

2. Increase heat to high; heat soup to boiling. Stir in tortellini and spinach, pressing on spinach to immerse in liquid. Cook tortellini according to package directions or until tender, stirring occasionally. Ladle soup into shallow soup bowls to serve.

Tighten, Tone and Transform Your Body The Bar Method, a new fat-burning and strength-building workout, comes to St. Louis. By Cristy Miller | Photos by Emma Birge-Osborne

> I have a tried-and-true fitness routine I stick to and enjoy; weight lifting followed by occasional cardio. I prefer to pump iron than to spend time on a treadmill—mostly because I believe that building lean muscle pays off more in the long run. And I hate to sweat. But once in a while, I try to mix up my workout routine. So when a coworker told me about a new fitness concept, which she claimed would “kick my butt without making me sweat,” that recently debuted in St. Louis, I decided to trek to Chesterfield to give it a try. The concept is called The Bar Method and in somewhat simple terms, it combines free-weight interval training with the muscle-shaping technique of isometrics and the conditioning and strengthening movements of ballet. The result is a total body workout that builds and tones lean muscle and increases your heart rate, but doesn’t have the fast paced intensity of an aerobic cardio workout. Sculpt muscle and shed fat without breaking a sweat? Um, yes please! The first complete Bar Method studio to open in St. Louis, the gym is located in a carpeted, dance-studio-like space, with mirrored walls and a ballet bar. I was skeptical about a workout that promised major body sculpting but was done in socks and used a ballet bar and two-pound weights. But all my apprehensions were put to rest once I met owner and Bar Method enthusiast Jessica Prasse and began the 60-minute class. We started with a warm-up followed by interval training using two to five-pound free weights to work triceps, biceps and shoulders. All exercises are performed while in the “tuck” position—a position that involves tightening your core muscles, mainly glutes, abs and back—in order to maintain posture, coordination and maximize the effectiveness of the workout. After upper body, it was on to lower body and legs—a muscle group I rarely work—with a variety of leg lifts and squat-like movements that work the hamstrings, glutes, waist, thighs and calves in between intervals of deep stretching. Using the ballet bar through many of these movements, these exercises concentrate on using your own body weight as resistance with more repetitions, thereby burning calories while simultaneously building lean muscle. And fluctuating between bursts of intense movements like leg lifts and

curls with slower, elongated positions keeps your body in a maximum caloric-burning state. At several times during the hour, my legs started to shake, but I was told that’s a good thing—it means you’re working the muscles correctly and in a new way. I also knew it meant I would be sore the next day. The class ends with mat work; working your abs and glutes and what Prasse calls the best part, “back dancing,” major tightening and contracting of the glutes, followed by a cool down. I love that I was able to burn some serious calories sans sweating, have fun and immediately

head back to work. And yes, while the class did totally kick my butt, I felt strong and energized all day. However, that wasn’t the case the next day— more like sore. But in a good way.

Get Involved: Independence Center This innovative rehabilitation program gives adults with mental illness a place to learn new skills, build friendships and live fulfilling, independent lives. BY SHENIQUA FAULKNER

As recently as the early 1980s, there were few community-based programs in St. Louis to help people with mental illness succeed in everyday life; few places they could go to build skills, find jobs, receive assistance to live on their own and build friendships. During that time, a group of St. Louis families and concerned friends recognized this difficult cycle and saw the need for a change. After meeting one another in hospitals and emergency rooms while their loved ones were receiving care, they imagined a program that supported their family members and helped them achieve independence and personal dignity. They pooled together their own resources and launched Independence Center in 1981. SOMEWHERE TO BELONG

Today, Independence Center helps more than 1,500 adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses each year and provides various programs

that provide a holistic view of each individual. At its core, Independence Center follows the Clubhouse Model of Psychosocial Rehabilitation. In the Clubhouse Model, participants are called “members,” not “patients” or “clients.” “The term ‘member’ is important. Everyone deserves to feel connected to their community, to feel a part of something” says Lynn Huelsmann, development director at Independence Center. “Everyone needs to know that he or she is expected and wanted someplace.” At Independence Center and other Clubhouses like it, activities focus on members’ strengths and abilities, not their illness. Members have access to wellness and fitness programs, work-readiness training, work opportunities and housing and residential programs so they may lead independent, dignified lives. GET INVOLVED

How We Met Josh and I met while we were living Downtown. We both lived in the Soulard Market Lofts and often saw each other at our favorite bar and restaurant in Soulard. I thought he was the most attractive man I had ever seen in my life, so I started to show interest in him; he eventually got the drift and asked me out. Our first date was at a Blues hockey game and we sat in the second row right behind the net!

How We Met Mark and I started dating during our senior year at Parkway Central High School in 2003. We had known of each other throughout high school and had mutual friends, but it was not until calculus class senior year that we started talking. Mark sat in front of me, and we found ourselves talking before and after class. It was during that same semester that Mark and I started dating. As senior year ended, we had both decided to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia and we spent our college years together at Mizzou.

How We Met Matt and I met through his roommate Adam, with whom I had grown up and went to high school in Troy, Ill. Matt and Adam met at Saint Louis University, and afterward, they became roommates in a loft Downtown. One night, a girlfriend and I were meeting Adam at McGurk’s for drinks and Adam brought Matt. We hit it off and after that night, Matt and I talked on the phone a couple times. A few weeks later I had a work event and was going to miss the season premiere of “The Office” (a show we both love!), and Matt offered to DVR it and invited me over to watch it. We have been together ever since.

The Proposal Josh brought me to his hometown of Sullivan, Mo., where he told me the only "fib" to this day. He said we were going to his church where the owner of the town newspaper was conducting a meeting. Little did I know he had both of our families waiting inside the church. He took me through a side door where he had white and red roses scattered all over the floor leading up to the altar area. I was so thrown off guard I actually didn’t realize the flowers were there until after he had asked me to marry him at the altar. The Big Day Fall 2011

The Proposal This past summer, Mark worked as a summer associate at a law firm in Clayton. The firm held several events and dinners for the summer associates and their significant others. At the end of the summer, Mark received an offer from the law firm. Mark had said that two of the partners from the firm and their wives had invited us to dinner in celebration of his job offer. We arrived for dinner at Annie Gunn’s Steakhouse in Chesterfield and the hostess said that Mark’s co-workers had called and said they were going to be a few minutes late. We were shown to our private booth and our table was set for six along with a bottle of champagne. Mark handed me the bottle of champagne and on it was a personalized label that said, “Lisa, I have a question for you.” At that moment, I asked, “Are you serious?” multiple times before he could even ask. Mark pulled out the ring and said, “I’m serious” and asked me to marry him. Turns out the six place settings at the table were for Mark, myself and our parents. The Big Day August 6, 2011 at the Provincial House Chapel on the UMSL campus followed by a reception at Lumen Private Event Space.

The Proposal I knew something was up because my Dad had let it slip that Matt invited him to lunch. Matt picked me up for dinner with my parents at Vin de Set one evening. On the way he stopped in Lafayette Square in front of the big fountain. He took my hand and I started to cry. He got down on his knee and pulled out the ring, a round diamond on a platinum band of diamonds from Simons Jewelers in Clayton. He had picked it out with help from his Mom. Through my tears I screamed ‘Yes!’ and we went to our planned dinner. As we finished, our friends started showing up. Matt had invited them all for a mini engagement party on the roof of Vin de Set. The Big Day October 1, 2011 at the Old Cathedral and reception at City Museum.

hen Julie Lusser first met Danny Kwon at their employer’s Campus Crusade for Christ’s “Summer Project” in Macedonia, she never thought she would one day call her new acquaintance her husband. But with a little persistence from Danny and a lot of serendipity, Julie and Danny’s romance blossomed into a deep love and understanding for one another. Playing up Julie’s love for surprises, Danny’s unconventional proposal completely caught Julie off guard, having three unknown escorts take Julie to a surprise location where she was then met by her future husband, asking for her hand in marriage. Reflecting their Christian ideals, Danny and Julie’s August 7 wedding was an unforgettable affair, with friends, family and love defining the day, leading Julie and Danny into a life of happiness they have only just begun to enjoy.


[The details] Moment in Time Julie had chosen her photographer nearly six years prior to her wedding. Suited for Summer Julie reflected the summer vibe in her wedding party through the groom and groomsmen’s suits. Rather than traditional black and white tuxedos, the men

hile some brides turn their weddings into a tribute to everything white, poofy and flowery, Kristy Tullock took a different route with her wedding, choosing to reflect the strong bond between her and her family. From the cake to the flowers and even the decoration, Kristy’s family members helped make Kristy’s DIY wedding a gorgeous affair from start to finish. Having met her future husband, Rodney Stoyer, through a fellow kickboxing classmate, Kristy and Rodney’s friendship soon blossomed into a full-fledged romance. Before she knew it, Kristy was engaged, finding herself planning a wedding that would reflect her laidback, casual style. On July 24, 300 guests attended Kristy’s Washington, MO, wedding. From the 1936 Chevrolet Master Deluxe Coupe honoring Rodney’s late father to the handmade decorations, Kristy’s wedding was more than an outdoor party, it was a celebration of family and friends.

[The details] Historic Setting After falling in love with the old-world charm of the Washington Brewery, Kristy knew she had found the perfect place to have her wedding. Founded in 1855 by John B. Busch, brother of Adolphus and co-founder of Anheuser-Busch, the Washington Brewery has become a popular venue among Missouri brides (636.390.8050). Dining Delights Choosing the caterer was a nobrainer for Kristy and her husband. Their favorite eatery, Joe’s Bakery & Delicatessen, provided their 300 guests with hearty appetizers throughout the night. Some goodies included chicken artichoke spinach wraps, marinated beef kabob and baconwrapped smokies ( 636.390.8282). A Personal Touch Purchased directly from designer Alfred Angelo, Kristy decided to add a personal touch to her white strapless wedding gown, which featured a ruffled sweep train. Kristy’s sister’s mother-in-law hand-embellished the bustline with delicate crystal detail, completing her dress’ fairytale like design (Alfred Angelo, alfredangelo.com). Suited Up Rather than traditional black and white tuxedos, the groom and groomsmen wore gray suits that reflected the laid-back, festive feel of the wedding. (Savvi Formalwear, savviwedding.com). A Cut Above Hydrangeas, lilacs, lilies and feathers made up Kristy and her bridesmaid’s vibrant bouquets, hand-picked with her mother and aunt (both former florists) (Baisch & Skinner Flower Market, 314.664.1212). Custom Made As she did for her floral arrangements, Kristy took advantage of her family’s talents once again and had her aunt bake her wedding cake. Keeping the cake simple, the four-layer round cake was decorated with white icing and cascading flowers, which matched the bridal bouquet. Ring Me Up Kristy’s wedding and engagement rings were the finishing touches to her special day. A cushion-cut diamond was set in a sparkling three-sided micro-pavé set, creating a stunning wedding set. aving met through mutual friends at a Halloween party, Michael Bradshaw and Lindsay Rehme had no idea that chance encounter was about to change their lives forever. Fast forward nearly two years; Michael took Lindsay by surprise and popped the question. After an impromptu engagement party with all their St. Louis friends and family, Lindsay and her talented mother began to plan what would become Lindsay’s dream wedding. Keeping with her classic, elegant personal style, Lindsay and her mother created a fall affair to remember. On October 2, over 200 guests were invited to celebrate Michael and Lindsay’s uber-stylish wedding. From the ivory silk wedding dress to her carefully chosen floral arrangements, no detail was left undone, creating a wedding that was both traditional, yet modern thanks to its timeless aesthetic and undeniable classic charm.

Food Festivities Keeping with the wedding’s formal vibe, Lindsay opted for a three course sitdown dinner created by Karen Bartelsmeyer-Jones of Catering Plus. MEANINGFUL MEMORIES In lieu of a party favors, donations were made to Autism Speaks, honoring a family member touched with the disorder, as well as Lindsay’s mother who has spent her life working with Special School District.
