Midwestern dining mindsets and Chinese flavor profiles intersect in a big way at this tiny restaurant in Botanical Heights. It opened in 2018 with fanfare, using seasonal vegetables and hunks of high-quality meat— flavored with chiles, rubbed with exotic spices, wrapped into dumplings, fermented, glazed, grilled, pureed … the kitchen’s creativity seemed endless. And perhaps this was too much of a good thing. To start off 2019, the kitchen is retooling a bit. The Bites section of the menu keeps a favorite dish, salt cod rangoon, and will also feature morsels like wings and ribs. The Bowls section has standards like beef and broccoli or cashew chicken. Finally, there’s Bao, popular steamed buns filled with pork, chicken, mushrooms and more. All will cost under $10 and be available for takeout or delivery.

Don’t let the four-seat bar area dissuade you from ordering a cocktail. The fusions of Asian flavors are like nothing else in the city. Or, if you prefer, order a straight-up American beer in a can. No judgment here. After all, part of Good Fortune’s appeal has always been its no-holds-barred approach to food and drink—inspired by the owners’ shared values of rebellion, ambition and kindness.
