OME PEOPLE just have a knack for gift giving. I am not one of those people. I’m more of a wait-for-a-strokeof-genius type who ends up at the mall, stressed, on Christmas Eve. I have to say, though, since working at ALIVE, I’ve gotten better. I’ve come to know and love so many local boutiques and specialty stores that the mall has become secondary in my quest to find the perfect gifts. (Check out our ultimate STL shopping guide on p.86 for some of my favorites.) Diligently researching for our annual Wish List gift-giving guide (p.74) certainly has its perks as well. The 55 must-have items on this year’s list run the gamut—from chic and classic picks for the fashionista (or fashionisto) in your life to great finds for the techie type and a whole host of festive items fit for mom, dad, coworkers, friends and everyone in between. Let’s just say my chances of a shopping meltdown are much slimmer this year. No holiday issue would be complete without a New Year’s Eve toast…or two…or three. Spirits writer Matt Sorrell takes you step by step through five tasty cocktail recipes that are sure to keep your guests in good cheer (p.50). He also suggests three creative DIY hostess gifts that anyone can pull off—whether you’re a planner, procrastinator or somewhere in between (p.91). We’re not sure where cover celeb Evan Peters falls on the gift-giving spectrum, but we certainly know where he stands when it comes to his career in Hollywood (p.62). The STL-bred star of FX’s “American Horror Story” saw his fan base skyrocket with the premiere of the series last year, and now he’s back for a second season of insanity— all while juggling movie roles in “Truck Stop” and “Adult World” (starring John Cusack and Peters’ now-girlfriend, Emma Roberts), as well as pursuing his ultimate goal of landing roles in and eventually directing comedy (“the type with a message”). Two minutes with the quirky, ambitious boy next door would tell you that he’d have no trouble landing this sort of gig—and there’d be nothing “crazy” about it.

I Wish I May ALIVE’s editorial team searched high and low for the top gifts to buy locally this season, and the final result of the annual Wish List (p.74) does not disappoint. “Working on the Wish List holiday gift guide combined two of my favorite things: shopping and the holidays,” says contributing writer and shopper Mary Beard. “I loved getting the chance to explore all of the great stores and boutiques in the city and found a lot of must-have items to buy for friends and family this December (and a few things I’m putting on my own wish list, too). Special thanks goes to photographer Carmen Troesser for manning a monster photo shoot of 50+ items!”

A

few years back, I shared with you some fairly personal information about my legs.

It had to do with the amazing way they responded to a medically based form of fitness training that I had taken up in 2006. Performed on special equipment under the supervision of a wonderful physical therapist named Casey Breslin, my workouts took about 20 minutes a week. Like many of you, I had been skeptical when I first heard about this approach. I mean, 20 minutes a WEEK? It went against everything I'd ever been taught. But, as we say in radio: the legs don't lie. And mine had never been better. At age 49, I could run 12 miles around Forest Park pain-free. I was barely winded.

Bright Ideas

So what has happened since then, you might wonder? After all, how many times have you known people who were gung ho on some health and fitness regimen, only to find themselves right back where they started a few months later?

This month’s fashion feature “City of Brights” (p.64) alludes to a warmer type of winter (here’s hoping)-and that was the point for ALIVE’s contributing fashion editor Samantha Chadwick and Fashion Director Attilio D’Agostino. “We were really excited to make winter a little brighter and shinier for this issue,” Chadwick says. “We wanted to convey the feeling of warmth through warm colors and interesting fabrications—with youthful street style inspiration from the British TV series ‘Skins.’ You wouldn’t know by looking at the images that we were shooting right by the Arch on a Saturday, which was super busy—so we were being honked and whistled at by every other car!”

On the Road Again Associate Editor Gwen Ragno hit the road for Motor City with the six Project:Design! finalists as part of the Chevy Design Challenge, and she couldn’t have had more fun touring the GM Design Center and hanging with the designer finalists. “It was so cool to see the spaces where so much innovation and creativity happens in the GM Design Center; as we toured the facility, I could see the designers soaking up inspiration at every turn,” she says. “Hearing the Chevy designers talk about their own processes and inspirations made me think about cars in a whole new way—it’s remarkable how much deliberation goes into even the smallest detail.” Read the full story on p.26.

That's why I'm back today with an update. Are you ready? My legs – in fact, my entire body – are stronger and more fit than ever. I notice it when I'm hiking or kicking the soccer ball with my kids or when I'm doing yard work. Even my posture is better. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking: Charlie, this is not much of a story. But it should be. You see, after age 30, most people lose eight to 10 pounds of muscle a decade. By the time you reach my age – 53 – the speed of muscle loss roars into high gear – unless you do something to reverse it. This matters because muscle, it turns out, is the gatekeeper of longterm health. Next to quitting smoking, doctors now say the single most important thing an adult can do to live a longer, healthier life is to build strength. That – along with the fact that I have two young children I need to keep up with – is why I started going to 20 Minutes to Fitness six years ago. It is why I continue to go today. That's the funny thing about exercise: it really only works if you CONTINUE to do it. No fitness regimen will do any lasting good if you join up as a New Year's resolution and quit by March. But 20 minutes, once a week? That is something I can stick with. It works with my busy schedule. It doesn't bore or injure me. Plus, it has the added benefit of actually working. 20 Minutes to Fitness. Yes, that's my workout – and I'm sticking to it.

KMOX broadcasting veteran Charles Brennan, with 20 Minutes to Fitness physical therapist Jaime Boswell

On the Road

St. Louis’ first mobile vintage store is on the move. by jennifer wells From tablets to food trucks, pretty much everything is

going mobile these days—so why should vintage clothes and home goods be an exception? Enter forward-thinking retailer Beth Styles. Styles first demonstrated her love of all things vintage with the opening of her online Etsy shop, Parsimonia, where such items as vintage beaded dresses seamlessly share virtual shelf space with other beautiful treasures from the past, like French enamel coffee pots and delightfully weathered leather luggage. It wasn’t until recently that Styles decided to take her show on the road—literally—with “Holly,” a 1960 travel trailer lovingly restored by Styles and her husband. It took the couple five months and a ton of elbow grease to get the travel trailer into shape and ready for the road. Once Holly was restored to her full splendor, they carefully packed her up with unique and affordable vintage clothing, accessories and home décor and set off for their first show at the Indie Craft Revolution. Since then, Styles has taken her vintage boutique on wheels to a number of other shows, and

has garnered tons of positive attention. The new endeavor has been a true blessing for the Mizzou Journalism grad, who in 2010 found herself jobless the day after returning from her honeymoon. It was then that she decided to pursue her true passion, thrifting, as a source of income. “People are really rediscovering the creativity and quality of vintage items, whether it’s a dress, a tablecloth or some white ankle boots,” Styles says. “But a lot of times these items aren’t affordable to those of us with less expendable income, namely high school and college students and young professionals. My goal is to provide these women with vintage styles that translate into modern trends, all without breaking the bank.” In addition to setting up shop at local shows, Styles books the mobile boutique for events, private shopping parties and wedding photos. It’s her goal to one day host vintage-inspired tea parties and picnics, as well. To find out more about Holly, visit secondhandwithstyle.com.

Design Stars New to Town

As the STL design scene continues to grow, the city can add another exceptional resource to the list: Rocket Century. The new storefront on South Grand is quickly becoming a go-to for unique conversation pieces and intriguing home furnishings, thanks to its shop owners who strive to seek out the best examples of modernism both near and far. One can surmise that they’ve been pretty successful thus far, as the store carries a number of pieces by the era’s most important designers—including a stunning pair of green apple chairs believed to be created by legendary modern furniture designer Milo Baughman. Other great finds include pieces by Paul McCobb, Martin Borenstein and Guido Faleschini—but be warned: items are continually changing. If you spot something special one day, it just might be gone the next. 3189 S. Grand Blvd., South City, 314.875.0705.

The new optical center aims to put a definite focus on not only your eye health, but also your image, by stocking a number of fashionable designer labels such as Ellen Tracy, Coach, Guess Eyewear, BCBGMAXAZRIA Optical and Rampage Eyewear— plus a bevy of brand name and designer sunglasses. The friendly staff is committed to making sure that you leave with a trendy selection that complements both your look and your lifestyle. Taking a nod from mod salons on both coasts, the owners of Blown Away Blow Dry Bar are bringing this highly specialized concept to St. Louis. The blowout bar—a mainstay of Hollywood celebs and busy New Yorkers—is a styling niche that until recently was reserved for the coasts. Now, the fashion-forward set of STL can get red carpet-worthy hair in no time flat, thanks to Blown Away’s 30-minute wash, blowout and go service. With a menu of six signature styles, ranging from Beachy Waves to Straight & Sleek, there are a number of different options to suit nearly any mane. Clever add-ons like scalp massages, deep conditioning and keratin express treatments turn the practical wash-and-blow into a much more pampering experience. The Kiss and Makeup Bar offers its own unique line of services, including air brush foundation and lash application. The ante can truly only be upped with the addition of gourmet wine and food included in bachelorette party and girls’ night out packages. 8815 Ladue Road, Clayton, 314.932.1116.

Inside Project:Design!’s first-ever Chevy Design Challenge. by GWEN RAGNO

Company, ALIVE partnered with Chevy to add an extra twist to the top six finalists’ road to Saint Louis Fashion Week. Each finalist was challenged to create one additional look for her collection, inspired by a visit to the GM Design Center in Detroit. Those who witnessed the show on opening night of Fashion Week saw first-hand the remarkable results. The Trip

On Sept.19, just two and a half weeks before the Project:Design! show, the six finalists jetted to Detroit to meet up with some of the lead designers on the Chevrolet Color and Trim team. After touring the top-secret GM Design Center facility with Senior VP of Communications Kari Nattrass, the PD finalists viewed a dynamic presentation by Chevy designers Michelle Killem, Rebecca Waldmier and Brett Goliff in the high-tech VR room. Then, everyone adjourned to the Round Room—a circular studio space in the center of the facility where much of the collaborative design work happens—to compare notes on the similarities between fashion design and vehicle design. Just like fashion designers, Killem, Waldmier and Goliff spend a lot of time figuring out who the person they are designing for is—how they dress, what they like, what motivates them and more. The things that customers choose to surround themselves with are perfect indicators of what they’re likely to want in a vehicle. The biggest difference? Vehicle designers have to look three to five years ahead to figure out what will be popular when their final product actually hits the market. So, when they draw inspiration from the high-fashion runways, they’re scouting future trends, not current ones. The life cycle of a trend, Waldmier says, is fashion first, then interior design, then vehicles. Therefore, when a trend from the runway turns up in technology or home furnishings, that’s a signal that it is here to stay. After saying goodbye to the Chevy designers, our finalists headed to the GM Heritage Center, where decades of past GM vehicles are on display in a vast 26

showroom. They spread out and spent some time snapping photos, taking notes and sketching before it was time to head back to the airport to go home. The Results

Needless to say, our top six Project:Design! finalists left Detroit with plenty of ideas and inspiration to work with. Jessica Affsprung of I Am Sly was particularly struck by the creative use of piping and trim to make shapes look wider or narrower, and Michele Sansone of Sansone Design was similarly fascinated with the bold stitching used in sports cars like the Corvette and Camaro. Whitney Manney walked away with some patterning ideas based on vehicle interiors, while Ashley Ulicni of Ulicni was intrigued by the interiors in some of the more futuristic concept designs that the Chevy team shared. Lauren Bander of LB, who went on to win the grand prize in Project:Design!, learned that even the most subtle tweaks in a color’s tint or shade can do wonders to make a look feel more current. Brett Goliff, lead creative designer of Chevrolet Color and Trim, served as one of the judges on the night of the show, looking specifically at the Chevy Design Challenge piece in each collection (pictured above). Designers were judged according to how well they conveyed the influences of vehicle design on fashion, whether the look complemented the rest of the collection and whether the vehicle design influence was evident in the entire look. Goliff was extremely impressed by the designers’ creative interpretations of the Chevy Design Challenge. “The designers really captured all facets of Chevrolet design in their pieces,” he says. “What I enjoyed most is how varied all of the designs were—some of the designers were very literal in their approach, while others took the more organic route. The best part was to see their inspiration come to life down the runway. However, the most successful Chevy design went to Elise Lammert for the intricate detail that she put into her concept. She captured everything we strive to do in all of our vehicles with her avant garde style.” Photos by Matt Kile & Timothy J. Schinsky

San Francisco’s is famous, and New Orleans has one named “Desire.” Now, St. Louis is officially on track to get its own iconic trolley, thanks to a $25 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration. The Loop Trolley will be a 2.2-mile fixed-track trolley line running from the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park to the University City Library. The project, spearheaded by Joe Edwards, Chairman of the Loop Trolley Transportation Development District, is expected to be ready by mid-2014. Edwards says the trolley is expected to enhance the area’s quality of life, increase tourism and lead to further development. “It’s back to the future,” Edwards says. “Trolleys are leading to revitalization across the country.” The system will include three to five vintage trolley cars, most likely from the

’20s or ’40s. Vintage cars are more economical than the newfangled hybrids, which cost two to three times as much. The cars can move in both directions and have headlights on each end, so there’s no turning around, loops or turntables necessary. During peak times, the trolleys could operate with as little as 10 minutes between stops. Establishing a trolley in an area that is already a nationally recognized entertainment, dining and cultural destination is expected to bring even more attractions, helping to keep young professionals engaged in the community. Edwards hopes that the Loop Trolley will serve as a prototype for bringing other developing neighborhoods together, and that the system will expand just like the Metrolink did, “one leg at a time.”

theater

Stage Pride Upstream Theater is already known as one of the most innovative theater companies in St. Louis. Now, it has received a prestigious $10,000 grant from the American Theater Wing, the same group that presents the Tony Awards. National Theatre Company Grants are limited to nonprofit groups that have been in operation for five to 15 years. Upstream is the first Missouri theater company to receive recognition in the grant program’s 55 years. Artistic Director Philip Boehm credits Upstream’s selection to its

mission and dedication to broadening local theater horizons. “Our goal is to move you and make you think,” he says. Upstream brings an international perspective to St. Louis by presenting new plays, works by foreign playwrights and creative staging of classics—like its acclaimed production of “Oedipus King.” Boehm says the company’s productions are sensory, not cerebral, creating images that stick with audience members long after they’ve left the theater. Starting January 11, Upstream Theater will present its next production “Cafe Chanson,” a celebration of French song and performance directed by the prominent St. Louis thespian Ken Page. The songs are performed cabaret-style, and the story begins during WWII on the night of Paris’ liberation. For more information on Upstream Theater, visit upstreamtheater.org.

Two new businesses are adding a dash of spice to the concept of dining out. by Christopher Reilly Sometimes, a traditional sit-down dinner just doesn’t cut it—especially for those foodies who think they’ve seen and tasted everything. Luckily, St. Louis is chock full of creative foodtrepreneurs, who are coming up with new ways to bring culinary greatness to your taste buds. foodies on foot

Founded by self-proclaimed food evangelist Beth Huch, St. Louis Culinary Tours offers walking tours of the area’s top foodie neighborhoods. Taste tourists visit multiple establishments, all within walking distance of one another, and meet the chefs and bartenders along the way to sample their creative offerings. The debut tour of Maplewood began with craft cocktails at Vom Fass, including a tasting of oil and vinegar pairings (diners left with a gift of their favorite combo), then moved on to Acero for a gourmet meal with chef Adam Knau, and wrapped up with a nightcap next door at Water Street. Each tour is limited to 10 participants, and food preferences of all kinds are accommodated. Similar tours are being planned for Downtown St. Louis, Clayton, Webster Groves, Central West End and Chaumette Winery. Huch also offers private tours and gift certificates. Don’t call it dinner theater. Tenacious Eats, created by former Scottish Arms chef Liz Schuster and her partner Jake Alcorn, takes the dinner-and-a-movie concept to a whole new level. Fusing fine dining and feature films, the chefs prepare multi-course meals and cocktails in view of the audience during films screened at Meyer’s Grove. For instance, during the film “Short Order,” when osso bucco is served on screen, Schuster and Alcorn do the same for the live audience. Other times, the chosen dish is not a literal association but inspired by characters, locations or actions depicted in the film. Schuster calls the evening “funny and playful,” and customers are already eating it up. Screenings are planned for the first two Tuesdays in December. Films under consideration are “Like Water For Chocolate,” featuring a local chocolatier, and “Braveheart,” served with traditional Scottish food like rabbit haggis. For more information, including upcoming films and screening dates, visit tenaciouseats.com.

The Partnership for Downtown St. Louis and LambertSt. Louis International Airport are both kicking off new composting programs, rallying their respective member restaurants to dispose of food waste in a sustainable way. Downtown, Project Compost is a two-year pilot program including 17 establishments along Washington Avenue. Partnership for Downtown St. Louis President Maggie Campbell estimates that over 3,000 tons of food waste will be composted over the next two years with the help of the Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. As the composting process produces soil from the food waste, the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis will buy back that soil and use it to fertilize the potted plants that beautify Downtown streets. Already, the program is gaining followers and paving the way for other communities to enact similar programs. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is getting in on the composting action, too—also in partnership with SWMD and DNR. Operating on a $15,000 grant, most of which was used to purchase proper receptacles for food scraps, the airport’s threemonth trial program collects the waste from four of its major restaurants (accounting for 30 percent of Lambert’s food waste) and sends it off for composting. Airport officials expect the program to expand after the trial period and some initial tweaking, adding to the facility’s already substantive recycling efforts for coffee grounds, paper, cans and plastics.

Not So Wicked

The good witch shares some insight into being the popular one. Interview by Katie davis Even off the stage, Jeanna de Waal exudes a charm and charisma that perfectly suits her role as the social butterfly, Glinda, in the 2012 production of “Wicked.” The show opens at The Fox Theatre on Dec. 12, its fourth St. Louis run in six years. Born in Germany, bred in England and now based in New York City, de Waal has been living and breathing theater since age 11. ALIVE picks her brain about some of her favorite roles in her career, what makes the good witch so good and being part of a story that has enchanted millions. ALIVE: What do you think about “Wicked’s” take on the traditional “Wizard of Oz” story and, in particular, on Glinda? jeanna de waal: Well, “The Wizard of Oz” is really Dorothy’s story, and the witches are just sort of a part of her story. One is good, and one is evil—and that distinction is very clear. I like that “Wicked” is the girls’ story, and you see the [shades of ] gray in how people become the way they are. It also debates what is good and what is evil. I think it’s a very different outcome than what “The Wizard of Oz” decides. ALIVE: Have you ever read “Wicked” or any of Gregory Maguire’s other books? jdw: I didn’t. I read little bits of it when I started practicing, but I had never read it before auditioning for the show. I plan to read it once I finish the contract. I know that it’s supposed to be a lot darker of a story in the book. The storylines are based on that, but they are different in the musical.

ter of Glinda? jdw: Until she starts to grow up and things start to unravel in life, I like that from the onset she greets everything with a positive reaction. She has a good heart, and she greets everything with a smile—and is a generally happy person because of it. ALIVE: Why do think this particular musical has resonated so well with audiences over the last 10 years? jdw: Whether you told this story in a small play or a big musical, I think people would connect with it. It has so many levels. Then, you add on top the spectacle of the show with the lights, sound, music and singing—[which sometimes is more like] vocal gymnastics. Even if one part of the show failed, it would still be a huge success. The whole thing is worked out so well; there’s not really a weak link.

34

Alivemag.com december 2012

ALIVE: What is your favorite song? jdw: “No Good Deed.” When Christine Dwyer

[as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch] does it, it’s just sort of electrifying. It takes your breath away. ALIVE: What have been some of your favorite roles in your career so far? jdw: I have to say “American Idiot,” because even though my role wasn’t that big in comparison to Glinda, it was the first lead I ever played. When I joined, it was about the same time that Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of Green Day, joined and I had a duet with him. It was so great getting to see who Billie Joe Armstrong was. Yes, he’s a rock star and an incredibly talented individual, but he was also so generous and incredibly warm to the people around him. It’s good to know that you can have everything and have a career like he does, but still keep your family life and your friends. He was just such an inspiration, in every way, to work with.

ALIVE: You also recently performed in the musical “Carrie.” jdw: My role was as Chris Hargensen, the high school bully and the one who coordinates the whole thing—gets the pig and dumps the blood. I had never before created a show. I had always taken over a role, which means the show is very much established. So it was a challenge, but one I really enjoyed, [to be] creating a role during the workshop stages. In that way, I felt very fulfilled in terms of being creative every day and bringing ideas to rehearsals. ALIVE: Are there any roles that you’d really like to

play one day? jdw: Oh gosh, there are lots. A lot of my dream

roles would fit more when I’m in my 30s. But I would love to one day play Queenie in “The Wild Party,” and play the lead in “Funny Girl.” I love that show so much. I would also like to be in “Sunday in the Park with George.” That’s another one of my favorites.

26, Senior Community Manager & Marketing Director, Yelp St. Louis Interview by jennifer dulin wiley

As Yelp’s “it girl” here in St. Louis, it’s Aimee Knebel’s job to see and be seen—and know everything going on in the city. From yelping about a hot new restaurant to throwing community events, Aimee is all about collaborating with local businesses and organizations (and her fellow Yelpers) to share what she loves most about St. Louis. How sHe Got Into the Biz Yelp found me on

LinkedIn. I give credit to having my keywords filled out and also having some good PR experience under my belt. The interview process was pretty intense, but so fun. A few months later, I landed the gig.

that the common factor that ties us all together is our love for St. Louis and its local businesses. People love to come out and support in any way they can. Why Her Job Rocks The creative opportunities

are unlimited—I get to plan events every month, both big and small, create my own marketing promotions, write the Weekly Yelp and more. Because Yelp is all about connecting people to great local businesses, I get to interact with local business owners every day. It also rocks that I get to work in a cool home office and build my own schedule. Typical Day No day at Yelp is typical. My mornings

I could be meeting with biz owners, planning my next event, doing a TV spot or working on a new marketing idea. I also talk to my colleagues in different cities a few times a day to share stories or bounce ideas off of them.

Best Work Day Ever I love the days spent work-

Proudest Moment I’d have to say the first was

when I was announced as the new community manager, because I worked so hard to get the job.

Also, last year’s Black & Red Ball at the Contemporary Art Museum. We had close to 500 guests, and it was so amazing to see so many local businesses come together to throw a huge bash. Plus, we raised $1,470 for Nurses for Newborns. Best Job Perk There are many, but I really

enjoy being able to travel to different cities to help other Yelp CMs with their big events, as well as visiting Yelp’s HQ in San Francisco and our regional office in Scottsdale, AZ. Favorite thing about STL It’s hard to pick one thing, but I’m going to go with the different neighborhoods and all they have to offer. I spend a lot of time on South Grand trying new ethnic food. I love to grab coffee at Blondie’s on Washington and check out the local shops. My favorite wine bar, Ernesto’s, is in Benton Park. You can experience a lot in this city just by hopping in the car for a few minutes. Goals for the Future My goal is to contin-

ue to build Yelp here in St. Louis and to grow our fantastic community both online and offline. I have a lot of exciting plans up my sleeve for 2013, and I want to keep getting more St. Louis locals involved.

Leather Bound

The latest in leather is more ballroom than biker. written by Jennifer wells

The fashion conscious concur that if you purchase only one piece this season,

make it leather. What’s so different this season from last? Pretty much everything. From the cuts (pleats, leggings and sweetheart necklines) to the context (pair with printed tops, chunky baubles and silk scarves), all the rules have changed. There is, however, one theme that remains constant: femininity. Kick those beat-up biker boots to the curb, and opt instead for embellished stilettos and a pleated leather skirt (think less Hell’s Angel and more Victoria’s Secret Angel). In terms of outerwear, nix the traditional motocross jacket, and hit the road in a tailored cognac leather blazer, perfect for work or a date—perhaps even a date with a biker.

Alpha Industries peacoat available at 10denza, Central West End, 314.361.1010.

When it comes to statement coats, it’s the little things that make a big difference. written by jennifer wells styled by Samantha Chadwick If there’s one area of your life to become detail-oriented, make it fashion this season—as winter’s statement coats require it. Unorthodox prints (like ombré) made an unexpected appearance in menswear, thanks to designers like Ann Demeulemeester, whose bevy of statement jackets and overcoats in the pattern—mostly in graduating shades of gray and charcoal—made big time waves on the fall runways. In addition to the more obscure patterns, a few classics also emerged, like slimming stripes and cozy waffle knits. But the biggest news may be the return of the classic pea coat, which is whipped into ship-shape with twists in color (from navy to you-nameit) and changes in proportion (going overboard with oversized buttons and extended collars is a must). A favorite was undoubtedly by Fendi, which finished the bottom fifth of its pea coat with a shiny, on-trend leather sheen. A small detail with a big impact, no doubt—it’ll leave you well prepared to bear the brisk winter temps in style.

season’s fur accessories adds all of the glamour and none of the volume—with everything from stoles and wraps to gloves and handbags taking the place of the traditional long, heavy coat. Just one glimpse of Giorgio Armani’s rebellious fall collection, and you know the label’s inspiration had absolutely nothing to do with grandma’s closet. Of the handful of fur pieces shown, it was the off-the-shoulder technicolor pink and red garments that really stood out with an aesthetic that was decidedly much more “working girl” than “Golden Girls.” At L’Wren Scott, fur took on the image of Old Hollywood glamour with a modern utilitarian twist in a few scarf-meets-stole moments that were truly inspiring. While both designers definitely brought it, the moral of the story is this: For fall, anything goes— as long as it’s fur.

How To:

Toast the New Year with one of these spirited cocktails in hand.

1 / Warm drinks are perfect for sipping around the yule log, and this one boasts some of the favorite flavors of the season, like ginger and cinnamon. Combine all ingredients in a medium sauce pan and let simmer over low heat for 15 minutes, being careful not to let the mixture boil. Strain out the spices and let cool slightly before serving. Ladle into a punch cup or mug. (Serves six.)

by Matt Sorrell New Year’s Eve parties are for revelry and the raising of glasses, and your soiree is deserving of some fine libations—not just a couple of bottles of wine and some beers in a bucket. After all, NYE only comes around once a year, right? Don’t stress—it’s easier than you think to whip up some tasty adult beverages that’ll wow your guests and raise your fête to the level of legend. Look no further than these deliciously simple cocktails to keep your guests in good spirits and help you ring in the New Year in style.

1. Mulled Ginger Cup 11 oz Pimm’s No. 1 7 oz The Big O 1 cup water 2 cinnamon sticks

2/ Toasting the New Year with a glass of bubbly is a long-held ritual, and it’s easy to kick it up a notch for the traditional midnight salutation. There’s a reason this ultra-simple cocktail has been around since at least the mid-1800s. Place the sugar cube in a champagne flute and soak it with bitters; fill with Champagne or sparkling wine, and you’re ready to toast. (Serves one.)

2. Champagne Cocktail

pinch whole allspice (about 4 to 5 berries)

6 oz Champagne or sparkling wine, chilled

pinch whole cloves (about 4 to 5 cloves)

1 sugar cube

3. Countdown Cocktail 2 oz Lillet Blanc 4 oz Champagne or sparkling wine, chilled

4-5 dashes Angostura bitters

3/ This sparkling NYE drink adds another layer of flavor to the standard glass of bubbles. Just combine the Lillet (a French apertif wine) and the Champagne in a flute or a tall glass, and garnish with an orange slice or orange peel. For something a little sweeter, substitute St. Germain for the Lillet. (Serves one.) 4/ This quick and easy tipple takes advantage of one of the many moonshines permeating the STL market. The sweet, spicy apple flavor of the spirit is sublimely augmented by the bitters, resulting in a taste that’s like the holidays in a glass. Just fill a rocks glass with ice, then add all the ingredients and stir briefly to incorporate. In a pinch, good ol’ Angostura bitters can be substituted. (Serves one.)

4. Moon Pie

5/ Cranberries are definitely one of the premier fruits of the season, and no cocktail uses their tart flavor to better advantage than the classic Cosmopolitan. This festive take on the Cosmo incorporates the cranberries right in the vodka for a subtle taste that’s a bit less piquant than using straight cranberry juice. Doctoring the vodka requires a little bit of work beforehand, but the end result is tastier than anything you’ll find on the store shelf. To make, combine all ingredients from the cranberry vodka recipe, except for the vodka, in a medium saucepan on low heat for 5 to 7 minutes, until cranberries begin to split. Take off heat and let cool. Strain syrup from the mixture into a clean jar and combine with the vodka. Finish off the cocktail by shaking all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. (Serves one.)

5. Holiday Cosmo

3 oz Midnight Moon Apple Pie Moonshine

2 oz Cranberry vodka*

1 12-oz bag cranberries

1 oz Cointreau

1 cup sugar

2 dashes The Bitter Truth Jerry Thomas' Own Decanter Bitters

1/4 oz lime juice

1 cup water

1 dash Reagan's Orange Bitters

Cranberry Vodka 1 750-mL bottle vodka

Recently Ringed

Two newly engaged St. Louis couples share their love stories.

Dominique Ranice Simmons, 29 & James Barnes Scott, Jr., 29 Occupations: I am a junior high school counselor at Pearland Independent School District, and James is a civil engineer at Granite Construction. First Sight: We met when we were 15 years old at Belleville East High School. We had a chemistry class together, and when he walked into the class for the first time, I immediately thought that he was the best-looking guy in the room. Later, I found out he was thinking the same thing about me! First Date: We went to the local movie theater to see “Remember the Titans.” We parted ways after high school when we went to separate universities, but then reconnected in 2010 through Facebook—we’ve been together ever since. The Proposal: James came home from work earlier than usual one day, and just popped the question out

of the blue! He said he knew in his heart, without a doubt, that I was the one for him. His words brought tears to my eyes, and of course I said “yes”! Our Relationship in three words : Relaxing, honest, endearing. Together we like to: Our perfect date night is going to see a concert at Lumière Place. We also love going to the movies, comedy shows and visiting museums. Believe it or not: My aunt on my dad’s side and James’ uncle on his dad’s side have been married for over 30 years! Home Sweet Home: We live and work in Houston, TX, right now…but who knows where the future will lead us! The Big Day: July 20, 2013, at the St. Charles Convention Center in St. Charles.

Occupations: I am a PhD student at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, and Kevin is the Director of Healthcare Business Development at Medela, Inc. First Sight: I was a freshman at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Kevin was finishing his masters at Marquette University when we first met. I was out with friends for the evening on campus, and he happened to be in town visiting some buddies—somehow we ended up at the same party, and the rest is history. First Date: We began chatting with one another online and continued a long distance relationship until that summer. I moved home while Kevin was still at Marquette, and he drove down March 16, 2002, for our first official date: dinner at Baci’s and dessert at Baker’s Square. The Proposal: Kevin popped the question on March 16, 2012, after a wonderful dinner at Charlie Gitto’s. Although we were incredibly full from pasta and tiramisu, I still managed an enthusiastic “yes”! Our Song: “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes. The Big Day: June 15, 2013, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Brentwood, with a reception at Sheldon Concert Hall.

Missouri Botanical Garden as the site for both the ceremony and reception, and were thrilled to have the dazzling Chinese Lantern Festival happening at the same time. It was a beautiful and exciting destination for out-of-town guests that made it easy for the couple to focus on the fun parts of planning their big day. The Bride

Bastille Inspirations With the wedding date set for July 14, Bastille Day, the couple decided it was appropriate to have a French countryside feel. Jennifer wore a one-shoulder belted ball gown, and her maid and matron of honor wore one-shoulder cocktail dresses. The flower girl’s ivory dress was handmade by the bride’s aunt and was completed with a crown of tea roses. For flowers, the bride’s stepsisters arranged a lovely mix of cream and red blooms with touches of blue here and there. Mason jars held the flowers and candles, and vintage crates and tulle decorated the dessert table. An antique typewriter was also set up for guests to leave well wishes for the couple alongside a slideshow of pictures of the couple throughout their lives.

A Light Nosh As self-proclaimed foodies, the right food choice was important to the couple. They decided to skip the sit-down dinner, opting instead for a casual atmosphere with an hors d’oeuvre buffet of finger foods to give guests a greater range of options. Jennifer’s stepsisters made an array of tiny desserts, including several of Chris’ favorites: lemon cupcakes with a lemon curd filling, chocolate cupcakes, strawberry rhubarb pies and apple pies baked in jars.

Meet Me in St. Louis

A San Francisco couple chooses the Missouri Botanical Garden as the site for their Midwestern destination wedding. by Amanda Henry

Their Story In 2007, Jennifer Balaco and Chris

Hanrath both started masters programs at the University of Michigan School of Information—but they didn’t cross paths until a year later, at a happy hour event during the first week of class. They connected instantly, and after many hours of studying together in coffee shops across campus, it was clear that their relationship was meant to be more than just a lifelong friendship. After graduation, when Chris secured a job in San Francisco, they decided to take a big step and move across the country together.

After two years of exploring and enjoying the Bay Area together, Chris knew that Jennifer was the one for him. He planned an adventurous day to pop the question, setting up diversions with several friends along the way. After brunch at one of Jennifer’s favorite spots, he suggested it was a perfect day for a hike along the Pacific coast. When he stopped to change the lens on his camera, Jennifer thought nothing of it and went on admiring the view. Then, she looked down to find Chris on one knee with a smile on his face, a sparkling ring in hand and his

camera securely in his bag. Needless to say, there was no hesitation in her answer! Middle ground Jennifer and Chris had a big deci-

sion to make when it came to where they would tie the knot. The couple lives in San Francisco, Jennifer’s family is from Collinsville, IL, and Chris’ family lives in Dusseldorf, Germany. Knowing that not all of their friends and family would be able to celebrate with them no matter which location they chose, they decided on St. Louis. The couple settled on the

The insane HOLLYWOOD life of STL-bred actor Evan Peters.

Head CASE by katie davis cover and inside photos by eric williAMS

He might be the star of FX’s hit show “American Horror Story,” but Evan Peters’ own American story in Hollywood is anything but. After 10 years of working hard in both TV and movies— including a stint on “One Tree Hill” and A supporting role in “Kick-Ass”—it’s all starting to pay off for the STL native-turned-star. Last year, Peters’ fan base skyrocketed with the debut of “American Horror Story,” in which he played the creepy-yet-charming boy next door, Tate Langdon. The show, written and directed by Ryan Murphy (creator of “Nip/Tuck” and “Glee”), has received considerable attention for its unconventional anthology format—each new season, rather than continuing an ongoing story, has its own unique storyline with a fresh batch of characters to terrorize. Peters returned with Season 2 this fall, this time as Kit Walker, a patient in Briarcliff Manor Asylum for the criminally insane, who’s nicknamed “Bloody Face” for what he does with his victims. Yes, it’s as skin-crawlingly gory as it sounds. Between seasons, Peters managed to squeeze in filming for two upcoming movies: the dark, humor-filled “Adult World” (starring John Cusack and Peters’ nowgirlfriend, Emma Roberts) and the more emotionally charged drama, “Truck Stop,” in which he plays a kid with cerebral palsy. Though for now it seems that Peters is carving a niche for himself on the darker side of Hollywood, he aspires to comedy—the kind with a message—and plans to pursue that path after he finishes his time in the asylum.

ALIVE: You’ve been in Hollywood for 10 years now. Does it feel like home yet? Evan Peters: We’ve just been taking it a year at a time. So, this is home right now, and I’m getting more and more comfortable with the idea of being an actor. It’s a crazy schedule, but I love it. You spend your life doing all of these really weird things or stunts, and it’s all pretend. You have to make it look like it’s real. The purpose is entertainment—and maybe enlightening people. ALIVE: How did your role as Tate Langdon in the first season of “American Horror Story” compare to what you were expecting when you showed up on set the first day? EP: I knew going in that I was going to be portraying a school shooter, because the original pilot had me playing one. But, when they rewrote some of the script, they pushed that scene off for a couple of episodes. It was also a little different in how

it was shot. I mean, even just working with Ryan Murphy, the director, was different. He’s very visual, and he sees things in detail before they’re there. Sometimes, he’ll act out little parts and then say, “I’m not an actor, I’m not an actor!” But that helps. ALIVE: How did you prepare for the role? EP: Once I read the script and realized that he was going to be a school shooter, I decided it would be interesting to read about some—why they did what they did, and what was going on in those situations. They said there was supposed to be a charm to Charles Manson, so I thought, “That’d be really cool to use this idea for the character.” I read “Helter Skelter,” and I kind of changed the movies I was watching. I watched scarier movies to get in the right mindset. ALIVE: Who on set has influenced you most? EP: I’ve learned a lot from working on the set. Jessica [Lange] is cool. When she has an idea or a concern, she just says it. I think that’s made me more confident. I ask more questions, and if I have an idea, I go ahead and describe it. Working with Sarah Paulson this season has been really funny—she just cracks me up. It’s nice to know that there’s someone you can really laugh with on set. ALIVE: The actor who played the creepy Rubber Man in Season 1 of “American Horror Story,” Riley Schmidt, is also from St. Louis. Did you bond over this at all? EP: Oh yes. We’ve definitely discussed Imo’s and toasted ravioli. There’s a big difference between the Midwest and LA. There are a whole lot of people out here. It becomes very difficult to be friendly to everybody, so you develop a sort of shield or a front. And that’s the thing about St. Louis. It’s a lot more interconnected, and everyone’s kind of on the same level. Out here, there’s almost a hierarchy. Everyone’s trying to impress everybody else and be the “next thing.” It can be extremely off-putting. I’m probably prejudiced. My friends are great, though. They’re my family out here. Everyone sort of has [his or her] own little group or clique with the people that mesh well. Everybody else is just everybody else.

ALIVE: Most of your immediate family still lives in St. Louis. How often do you come back to visit? EP: I usually come back for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I try to come back sometime in the summer, but each summer’s been different so far. It kind of depends on what’s going on. My brother and sister usually both try to come out here once a year for a sort of getaway. And then, once a year, my parents visit and clean up my place a bit. ALIVE: Tell us about your upcoming role in “Truck Stop.” EP: It felt really tight to me, because I think I had just two days off in between [shooting “Adult World” and “Truck Stop”]. It was a drama, and I had to be someone with cerebral palsy. At first, I was pretty stressed out about it and didn’t think I could do it. I thought, “I haven’t had enough time to prepare for this, because I’ve been working on a comedy.” Physically, it was pretty demanding. I liked the whole aspect of having a physical ailment where you don’t have something to cling to all the time. I’m pretty curious to see what it all looks like in the end. ALIVE: What are your career goals moving forward? EP: You know, I’d really like to direct comedy. My goal after this season is to somehow focus on that a bit. I’ll still be acting, because I still want to do really cool roles, but I’d like to do more stuff that’s grounded in real-life problems—things that people face every day. I’d definitely approach things with a grain of salt, though. You can’t take everything too seriously, and I think that’s a bad way to go about life. It’s entertainment, but you can say something. And if I had to say something, I’d want to communicate that. I guess it’s a very Woody Allen approach, but I think it’s smart. ALIVE: Who in Hollywood do you aspire to work with someday? EP: I’d love to work with Tom Hanks. He seems like the nicest guy, and he’s obviously creative and talented. As an actor, he always shows feeling extremely well. It’s so entertaining to watch him go through the emotions of a character. I’d love to see how he works and goes about doing all of his roles. Jack Nicholson would also be cool. He just seems like a total badass.

Building an empire isn’t easy, but it does have its perks—just ask design powerhouse Rebecca Minkoff, whose talent and good fortune have her rubbing elbows with not only the best in the fashion biz, but also an endless list of celebrity clientele. The new mom, who lives in NYC with her actor/director husband, Gavin Bellour, just might have it all. She took a moment away from fashion and motherhood—in anticipation of her event at St. Louis’ Saks Fifth Avenue on Dec. 12—to chat with ALIVE about her latest collection, great hair and what you’ll be wearing this spring.

ALIVE: How did you start out in fashion? Rebecca Minkoff: I moved here right after high school to intern for a designer. I worked for him for three years, and then in 2001, I decided I was ready to branch out on my own. I had a small apparel line for about four years, and then I launched one handbag as an accessory to the apparel and it took off. That’s pretty much how it became what it is today. ALIVE: Did you hit any roadblocks along the way? RM: Yes, we still encounter roadblocks. It’s never just an easy ride—from trying to figure out how to pay for the production of my first order to trying to listen to our customer and take our prices down so she can still afford our bags. With every season there are new challenges. ALIVE: When did you feel like you “made it”? RM: I think there have been several moments, where each time you think it’s the time. When I first got into Bloomingdale’s, I thought I made it, and when I became a member of the CFDA, I thought I made it. There’s this part of Saks Fifth Avenue, right when you walk off the elevators, where I have a full display of clothing and my name is in hard letters on the wall. That just happened over Fashion’s Night Out, so I thought I made it then.

REBECCA MINKOFF

ALIVE: Many of your handbags have gone on to “it bag” status, like the Morning After Bag. What do you think it is about your handbags that keeps women coming back for more? RM: I think it’s really a combo—some of them are trend-driven, but a lot of them are timeless, and I try to design an aesthetic that’s around a good bag versus a logo. I think people appreciate the design rather than, “Here’s who I purchased today.”

Haute mama

ALIVE: Celebrities also seem to have a thing for your designs. When you first started out, did you foresee that one day celebs like Jessica Alba or Scarlett Johansson would be carrying your handbags? RM: It was obviously a wish that I had and a hope. I knew to be successful that I was going to have to get a certain following there, so it’s been a blessing. People admire their style, and it helps to make the brand relevant and validate the consumer’s purchase if they look up to someone whose style they admire and they’re wearing the bag, too. ALIVE: Your men’s line, Ben Minkoff, is teeming with practical but fashion forward bags for real men—computer bags, messengers, weekenders. Does the design process change when crafting bags for men? RM: It’s not just me that’s involved with the men’s line; my brother is my business partner, too. He has a ton of input on the men’s line, and I think listening to him, it’s really more about function and subtle details, and less hardware—because men are more focused on function and subtlety.

ALIVE: Moving on to clothes, what should women have in their closets right now? RM: Definitely a good jacket. I think there are a lot of really interesting jackets that people are mixing with traditional wool—and fake or real fur as an element of decoration. I’m all for a mid-heel boot, because it’s something you can wear all day and not have your feet hurt. Also a great “something glittery” that takes you through the holidays, whether it is sequins or a glittery bag. ALIVE: For fall 2012 you showed a number of layered ensembles; do you have any tips on how to keep layering streamlined? RM: My approach to layering is moderation. I don’t feel like I ever want someone to layer on 20 things. It should be more like a great fitted blouse with a boxy jacket, paired with tighter jeans. I think it’s important if you have one loose element to make the other more fitted. ALIVE: You recently launched a new jewelry line, which includes a selection of layerable pieces. Can you tell us more about it? RM: We were launching it for the holiday [season], so we wanted to make it sparkly and fun. With all of the upcoming events people have during the holidays, the goal was to have it be something that you could layer many elements together with. ALIVE: Your spring 2013 collection was so optimistic; what was your inspiration? RM: Spring was inspired by the photographer Slim Aarons who photographed really beautiful people and exotic places in the ’60s and ’70s. It was kind of reimagining that glamorous lifestyle—what would the girl be wearing to those events now? ALIVE: Tell us all about next spring: how do you envision it, what will we be wearing, and what will our must-have colors be? RM: I think definitely a lot of white, and people are ready for the return of the flare—slight flare, not bell bottoms. ALIVE: Completely off the subject, you just may have the best hair in fashion—any tips or products you can recommend? RM: I’m not really a product whore at all. I think it’s because I take a lot of vitamins. I guess I take care of it more from the inside versus using product. ALIVE: Now that you’ve hit on nearly every facet of fashion—apparel, handbags, jewelry—what’s next? RM: We plan on opening our first retail store in July next year, so that’s our focus—figuring out what it’s going to look like and getting ready.

Yuletide Cheer

For the Procrastinator: Flavored Salts You can wait until the last minute—and still give a hostess gift that’s from the heart.

You’ll be the talk of the party with these DIY hostess gifts.

by Matt Sorrell ’Tis the season for holiday get-togethers, and the courteous guest knows it’s imperative not to show up empty-handed. Impress your hosts at the next seasonal soiree by bringing them a homemade liqueur, syrup or garnish to bolster their bar. Our featured recipes vary in the amount of time needed to pull off the finished product, yet all are easy to execute—and you can rest assured you’ll get invited back next year.

coarse sea salt ground dried herbs or spices

The ultimate last-minute gift, flavored salts take literally minutes to make and can be used long after the holiday season has faded into memory. Combine ingredients and mix well. Put in a jar and store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. This ultra-simple salt can be used to make a tasty rim on a cocktail glass, or add a pinch into your drink for a burst of flavor. Almost any spice or dried herb can be used. One of our favorites is dried chilies, which make for a spicy addition to a margarita.

For the Time-Saver: Cinnamon Simple Syrup This syrup is simply delicious— and perfect for the gift-giver on the go. sugar water cinnamon sticks

Cinnamon is one of the season’s go-to spices, and this syrup can be added to just about any spirit for some yuletide flavor, as well as to tea, coffee or any warm beverage that needs a touch of sweetness and complexity. Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Bring the liquid to a slow boil, then reduce heat and simmer for five minutes. Take off heat and let cool to room temperature, then strain out the cinnamon sticks. Bottle the syrup and store in the refrigerator. It’ll keep indefinitely. For the Planner: Limoncello This classic Italian liqueur takes some time to prepare, but the result is well worth the wait. 2 750-ml bottles 2 cups 2 cups 10-12

vodka water sugar lemons

Limoncello is the gift that keeps on giving. It can be kept in the fridge or freezer all year to provide an instant refreshment for impromptu get-togethers. Remove the zest from the lemons with a grater or vegetable peeler, and make sure to avoid getting the pith (the white portion under the peel)—it’s extremely bitter. Place the zest in a large glass jar and pour in one bottle of vodka. Seal the jar and store in a cool, dry place for two weeks, shaking the contents daily. When time is up, strain through cheesecloth into another jar, and add the other bottle of vodka. At this point, combine the sugar and water in a sauce pan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let it come to a boil, then remove from heat and let it cool. Add simple syrup to the limoncello, then seal the jar and let the concoction rest for another week before gifting. 92

Get Figgy With It If the notion of figs brings to mind grandma’s holiday puddings or Fig Newtons, you’re missing out. From sweet California figs to the flavorful Adriatic fig and the thick-skinned Kadota, this fabulous fruit comes in all different shapes, sizes and flavors. Figs are known for their luxuriously sweet and chewy texture; they also happen to be low in calories, rich in antioxidants and dietary fiber, and an excellent source of potassium. For cooking, fresh figs are your best option. Buy them locally from Ivan’s Fig Farm at the Schlafly Winter Farmers Market. Try this simple appetizer recipe at home, or check out fabulous fig dishes available at Modesto, BARcelona and Nico. Prosciutto Wrapped Figs (Sandra Lee, foodnetwork.com)

1. Quarter the figs, cut a small hole in the center of each piece and fill with goat cheese. 2. Take a slice of prosciutto and diagonally wrap it around the fig. 3. Drizzle honey and pumpkin pie spice over each fig, place in the oven and roast for 10 minutes. – Katie Gutierrez

“Falling” Off-Broadway When Deanna Jent debuted her highly personal original play, “Falling,” at Mustard Seed Theatre in September 2011, she never dreamed that a little more than a year later she’d be watching it on an off-Broadway stage in New York City. The play, inspired by real events in Jent’s life, follows a family as they care for their 18-year-old son living with severe autism. It’s been described as both funny and frightening, bringing audiences into the middle of a raw and heart-wrenching reality. It received considerable local praise during its run at Mustard Seed Theatre, and was honored with a 2012 Kevin Kline Award. The play also caught the attention of producer Terry Schnuck, who believed in the story so strongly that he decided to take it to New York. He felt a story like this—relatable and authentic—would surely resonate with a much larger audience. Sure enough, this fall found Jent traveling to New York with

Schnuck and the play’s original director, Lori Adams, to recreate the show with a new cast for an off-Broadway audience. The production opened Oct. 15 at Minetta Lane Theater to a warm welcome from New York audiences and critics. The New York Post called it a “heartfelt and nuanced family drama shot through with dark humor,” and Talkin’ Broadway wrote, “While you’re lost in the actors’ faces, don’t be surprised if you fail to notice the tears streaming down your own.” “The entire ensemble of theater artists that came together to produce this is amazing, and their work is being duly noted!” Jent says. “On a personal level, I’m always glad to hear from other ‘extreme parents’ who are grateful to see the complicated aspects of our lives onstage.” See Jent’s latest play, “Imaginary Jesus,” at Mustard Seed Theatre through Dec. 2. Applications are still rolling in for the second annual Arch Grants business plan competition, open until January 1. Arch Grants Executive Director Sarah Spear says the organization expects over 1,000 applications this year, all vying to be one of the 20 startups to receive a slice of the $1 million in grant funding. “St. Louis has a hunger to excel in the area of startups. Arch Grants envisions St. Louis established as an innovation hub,” she says. “We are focusing all of our efforts on creating that and realizing that vision.” Arch Grants is a nonprofit competition aiming to diversify the startup community in St. Louis by awarding grants to jump-start worthy innovators. Last year alone, more than 420 entrepreneurs from 35 states and 11 countries applied for a spot in the program, going through two rigorous rounds of selections before the 15 winners were selected. Along with $50,000 in cash, each winner receives business mentoring, free legal and accounting services, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with universities and network with angel investors. Since the first round of winners started the program in June, they have created 51 jobs, generated $282,000 in revenue and raised $645,000 in additional startup capital. Two startup companies from the first round will receive $100,000 of followup grants in the spring, based on their performance and growth over the past year. Putting It All Together

October 9, Saint Louis Science Center Saint Louis Fashion Week kicked off with plenty of flair at the much-anticipated Project:Design!, presented by Brown Shoe Company and produced by Rock Uniform. Before the show, guests mingled in the Saint Louis Science Center’s EXPLORADOME, sipping EFFEN Vodka cocktails, Bud Light Platinum and Monster Energy, and nibbling appetizers from Pasta House. The judging panel, including ALIVE Executive Editor Jennifer Dulin Wiley, Suzy Bacino of Town & Style Magazine, Gina Nelson of Brown Shoe Company, Sarah Garlich of Cha Boutique, Allyson Mace of Sauce Magazine, Brett Golliff of Chevrolet and Debra Bass, Fashion Editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, sat front-and-center as the six talented finalists in the design competition unveiled their unique collections. The judging included scores for the first-ever Chevy Design Challenge, which brought the six finalists to the GM Design Center in Detroit as inspiration for one of the looks in each collection. Lauren Bander took home the grand prize, and Elise Lammert was the people’s choice winner, but all six designers put on a great runway show.

Archetypes

Lisa Melandri An interview with Lisa Melandri, director of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. She took the position in August after serving as the deputy director for exhibitions and programming at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Throughout her career, Melandri has been known for curating innovative multimedia exhibits, and she is already bringing a fresh perspective to CAM. Her energy and enthusiasm in attracting new audiences into the museum through unique events and one-of-akind exhibitions reflect her commitment to growing the art community in St. Louis.

What is your current frame of mind? Optimistic and inclusive. When and where are you happiest? When I first open my eyes in the morning. What is your favorite smell? Lemon. What is one word that describes you? Joyful. What did you eat for breakfast today? Coffee and Necco wafers (from an Art of Traveling fundraiser at the airport). Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Ostensibly, therefore, totally and seriously. I blame it on my time in California. What is your most marked characteristic? I swear a lot. Like, a lot, a lot. What is your greatest weakness? I can be too sensitive.

Who or what is the greatest love of your life? A split between my husband, Jordan, and my mom. What trait do you most admire in others? Kindness. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? To be more fearless. What do you consider your greatest achievement? The relationships I’ve made and maintained. Which living person do you most admire? I am going to split this one between my 99-yearold paternal grandmother, and given recent events, the extraordinarily courageous Malala Yousafzai. Which historical figure do you most identify with? A combination of the artists Louise Bourgeois, Alice Neel and Beatrice Wood. All three were flawed and suffered in their personal lives, yet each had such an independent voice, forged a unique path and left a true contribution to the world—that’s something to aspire to! If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, who or what would it would be? A really great philanthropist. What is your greatest extravagance? Indoor and outdoor plants. What is your greatest fear? Failing at anything. On what occasion do you lie? I do lie, but not about anything serious. Mostly, I love to joke with people by making up stories. Who are your favorite artists? Piero Della Francesca, Burri, Philip Guston and William Pope.L. What is your favorite hobby? Watching sports. Where would you like to live? Eventually, near the ocean or the sea.

ALIVE MAGAZINE | December 2012

Who are your heroes in real life? My mom and dad, and public servants. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? Catherine de Medici. What’s something interesting that you just learned? What a Billiken is. What are you most looking forward to? The first snow. What is something you wish would happen? I wish we could find some political and social middle ground, especially in places like Libya. What is something you still want to learn? How to speak Spanish, golf and knit. What is one thing you want to do before you die? I’d like to see a lot more of this world. If you could say something to your younger self, what would it be? Don’t be scared. Interview by Elizabeth Tucker Photography by Wesley Law ‘Archetypes’ are off-the-cuff interviews with St. Louis' most inspiring, well-known personalities based on the 19th century Parisian parlor game known as the Proust Questionnaire.
