Party Like a Rock Star

W

hen asked to travel with the Anheuser-Busch team as part of their Bud Light Party Cruise, we jumped at the chance. Though we experienced all that we expected—photo shoots under the sun and late nights partying on the pool deck—we had no idea that we’d get to witness “a day in the life” of rock stars. We enjoyed being docked on Coco Cay island for a private concert that included O.A.R., the Barenaked Ladies and The All-American Rejects— but Centro models Dino Varmaz and Jesse Pinson stole the show. Dressed in leather, streamlined suits and micro-minis, they were the quintessential Euro rocker and glamazon girlfriend and were consequently greeted with swarms of photographers, curious onlookers and various versions of “I love you!” and “You rock!” We’ll never forget the strange day we spent fending off paparazzi on an island in the middle of November.

>

We’re so thankful to all of the Macy’s Presents ALIVE Bride sponsors, partners and ALIVE readers who have made this outsidethe-box bridal event a success. Though eyebrows were raised when we proposed a bridal event that wasn’t on a Sunday, we were excited to see that the idea has been embraced by St. Louis’ most fashionable brides-to-be. Hosted at the beautiful Lumen Private Event Space, the crowd sipped on Nuvo Sparkling Vodka and BORBA Skin Balance Water cocktails as they watched a bridal fashion show featuring Berrybridge Bridal Boutique gowns, jewelry from Diamond & Jewelry Brokers, flowers by Lucky You Productions and hair and makeup by Metro Design Studio. Guests also enjoyed the touching wedding videos by GebbsWeddingFilms.com, which played on screens throughout the room. Guy guests loved the Vinson Mortgage Grooms’ Lounge, where they got to play Wii, nosh on Onesto pizza and try MGD 64, Miller's new 64-calorie beer.

Letter from the Editor

Spring Awakening

T

his winter was undoubtedly one of the coldest we’ve seen in St. Louis in years. As things start to thaw, ALIVE is looking forward to warmer weather where we trade our ice scrapers for martini shakers, our snow boots for sandals and our scarves for sunglasses. In the spirit of getting us all excited about the warmer months to come, we bring you our annual Spring Fashion & Beauty Issue, chock-full of everything you need to look your best as you shed the extra clothing layers. As we started planning this issue, Managing Editor Cristy Miller worked with Contributing Editor Natalie Kurz, who every year racks her brain (and her beauty cabinet) to find the latest trends, treatments and products to talk up. This year, she found the “20 Hottest Beauty Boosts” to youth-ify you from head to toe, plus a few extra special beauty bargains that deliver big results without emptying your wallet. To kick off her research, Natalie trolls the department store beauty aisles, contacts dozens of national beauty experts and consults with the top local derms and plastic surgeons for their takes on the latest trends. Flip to page 68 to discover the most requested treatments for looking and feeling your best at any age.

Keeping in theme with the change in season, ALIVE is looking forward to a few fresh starts as well. In the upcoming months, you’ll notice a redesign of our pages, some new regular features and a brand new alivemag.com launching this summer. Stay tuned—then let us know what you think. Send us a note at letters@alivemag.com.

It was a month full of research for Fashion Editor Jill Manoff as well, who had her hands full pulling together this month’s story on the top spring fashion trends (“The Simple Life,”p.64). But she’s not complaining. Each fall and spring, she gets to travel to New York

Fashion Week to see the next season’s collections up close. There, she mingles backstage with designers (Jill Stuart and Nanette Lepore last year) to determine the top looks that will be hitting St. Louis in the warmer months to come.

STEVE GARNETT

NATALIE KURZ

According to Steve Garnett, photographer of this month's fashion spread shot in the Bahamas, "The sun was hot; the models were even hotter. I think the only thing that could be better than shooting a rockstarthemed look is actually getting treated like one, which happened while shooting. Definitely one of the most unique experiences I've ever had on a shoot."

You can tell what time of year it is by the height of the product pile on Contributing Editor Natalie Kurz’s bathroom counter—if it’s more than three face creams high, it’s gotta be March, which is when she writes the annual beauty feature on the latest treatments, procedures and products (p.68). While not dabbling in all things beautiful, she’s a full-time freelance writer and editor whose recent jobs have included working with Purina, Express Scripts, Soft Surroundings and Saint Louis Fashion Week.

AMY DE LA HUNT

LIZ REIFF SLOAN

Amy De La Hunt lives smack in the middle of St. Louis beer history, just a few blocks from the Anheuser-Busch headquarters, in a house once inhabited by a Lemp brewmaster. Still, it surprised her that Samuel Adams Boston Lager also traces its roots to her neighborhood (p.38). She glimpsed another historical facet of St. Louis—the beautifully restored 1928 Thaxton building— while writing about the nightlife vibe at its Speakeasy (p.92). ALIVEMAG.COM

Photographer Liz Reiff Sloan accidentally tripped into a darkroom while studying graphic design, and the rest was history. With a natural talent for design coupled with an easygoing personality and a dash of business sense, Liz and fellow photog Kristie Cromie run L photographie, a photo business specializing in weddings and natural light portrait photography. This month, she photographs the restaurant and nightlife stories.

STL NOW SCENE+spirits

on tap: a wicked good beer By Amy De La Hunt

The scoop on Samuel Adams’ St. Louis roots and craft beer innovations.

T

he largest American-owned brewery traces its history to Sidney Street, just north of the former crown-holder, Anheuser-Busch. You’ve probably never heard of Louis Koch’s brewery, and perhaps not even of his great-great-grandson, Jim Koch. But you definitely know Koch’s flagship beer, Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

The crumbling remains of the Soulard brewery were still around when Koch first brewed Boston Lager in 1984, using his ancestor’s 1860s-era recipe. “I actually went and got a cornerstone and a wooden brick from the cooper shop,” he says. Koch went into brewing armed with business acumen honed at Harvard, five generations of brewmaster genes—and that key recipe for a lager that’s “representative of what good American beer tasted like in the golden age of American brewing.” Following Prohibition, tastes changed, but Koch believes we’re seeing a renaissance. “In 2009, the American craft brewing community is the center of creativity in the brewing world,” he says, excelling “in both reviving worthwhile traditional styles of beer and creating new ones.” Koch’s Boston Beer Company does both. Its core family of craft beers includes classic styles from America, Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland. The most recent releases, Imperial Stout, Double Bock and Imperial White Ale, are amped-up versions of traditional styles, while the soonto-be-released LongShot Variety Pack features boundary-pushing winners of the 2008 Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest. Then there are the extreme beers: barrel-aged, high-alcohol brews that have more in common with cognac and sherry. In late 2009, you’ll find the new 52-proof Utopias on sale on both sides of the Mississippi.

The Boston Beer Company’s best-selling brew, Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

Sam Adams Sampler >>

Cranberry Wit

Carissa Sweigart, a Sam Adams national account manager in St. Louis, wanted to incorporate cranberries, reminiscent of her childhood on Cape Cod, in a spicy, flavorful Belgian wit. In her first attempt at brewing the unmalted wheat beer, she won the coveted top honor. “I got lucky,” Sweigart laughs. “But I think I’ve caught the brewing bug.” >>>Pair it with: Salads with berries and nuts, squash soup, orange-glazed duck or turkey, cheesecake with a fruit glaze.

Traditional Bock

Alex Drobshoff spent two years perfecting his German-inspired bock. His determination to prove to globe-trotting friends that they didn’t have to leave home to find an authentic bock paid off: His winning brew is a complex, full-bodied beer with just the right toasty, malty flavor and plum-cherry aromas. >>>Pair it with: Hearty comfort foods like chicken pot pie, bratwurst and sauerkraut, roast pork, baked beans, nutty cheeses (Gouda, Cheddar).

Double IPA

Mike McDole’s affinity for hops led him to develop this intense India pale ale. He used seven varieties of American hops—a whopping six pounds of hops per barrel—in crafting a full-bodied IPA with strong spicy, floral and citrus aromas and a robust, malty taste. >>>Pair it with: Roast beef, braised short ribs, chili, beef stew, fried chicken, crème caramel desserts.

Each year, Samuel Adams hosts the Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest. Last year, 1,300 brewers entered and three took home the prize (one winner is a Sam Adams employee and two are consumers)—having their brew produced, marketed and sold across the country. Here’s the rundown of the craft brews that made the cut.

AT HOME: house party By Sheniqua Faulkner

Throw an impressive at-home soiree in five simple steps. 1. SELECT A THEME Choosing a theme is a plan of action; not only will it help give you focus when buying food, decorations and spirits, but it also shows your guests you put genuine forethought into the fete. Start by sending guests theme-appropriate invitations from Vellum (prices vary). This cute stationery boutique carries hundreds of designs to set the tone of your party (120 W. Monroe Ave., Kirkwood, 314.909.1640, velluminc.com). 2. PLAN YOUR MENU You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to host an applause-worthy dinner party. Handpick your menu from Straub’s Fine Grocers’ selection of freshly prepared catering items featuring prime filet steaks, succulent lobster tails and fresh fruit and veggie platters (prices vary). Straub’s is also the place to stock for your wine and cheese party with selections from their extensive offerings of artisan cheeses (302 N. Kingshighway, Central West End, 314.361.6646, straubs.com). 3. CREATE A MOOD Prep your pad for guests by creating an ambience that’s in line with your party’s theme. Is the affair high energy? Play upbeat beats. Social? Arrange seating in groups so people can mingle. A more formal affair? Dim the lights and place candles all around your home (don’t forget the bathroom). We dig Tocca’s luxe line of candles available at Lusso ($38). Tocca’s selection of scents and seemingly endless burn time are ideal for hours-long parties (165 Carondelet Plaza, Clayton, 314.725.7205, lussohome. com). 4. SET THE TABLE Your table will undoubtedly be a focal point of your homebased gathering, so you’ll want to invest in a stunning setting that makes an elegant impact. Kate Spade’s simple yet sophisticated “Library Lane Platinum” 5-piece place setting ($119), available at Macy’s in the Galleria, will let the food you’re serving take center stage (1550 Saint Louis Galleria, Richmond Heights, 314.726.1810, macys.com). 5. SERVE A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL Whether it’s “Disco Fever” or “Hamptons Beach Chic,” align your specialty libation with your theme. Not sure where to start? Randall’s Wines and Spirits, with its knowledgeable staff and row after row of wine, beer and spirits, is a must-stop on your party planning to-do list (1910 S. Jefferson Ave., South City, 314.865.0199, shoprandalls.com).

JDW: You just celebrated your 50th birthday, and—from what I can tell—show no signs of a midlife crisis. What did this milestone mean to you? MB: It’s been an extraordinary journey. I only hope the next 50 years can compare. One of the greatest things about turning 50 is being less concerned about how others perceive you—being comfortable in your own skin and being open to sharing some of the mistakes that you’ve made along the way to help others avoid them. Inspiring people is what I love to do, and I’m really looking forward to the next 50 years. JDW: You’re also celebrating another important milestone this year—the 20th anniversary of your salon and spa, Studio Branca. What are some things you are most proud of in 20 years? MB: I started Studio Branca in 1989 with six stylists, and now we’re approaching 100 total if you include our second boutique location, Salon Branca in Chesterfield, which opened in 2007, and the Salon Professional Academy, founded in 2006. Most recently, we’ve been involved with St. Baldrick’s, which raises money for children with cancer, for our annual cut-athon. We’ve also worked with Our Little Haven, Ranken Jordan and other charities that are getting behind children’s needs. JDW: Do you manage to find time away from work? MB: The freedom and time I have now is incredible compared to when I was behind the chair six days a week. I am still behind

Out of the office, I love spending time outdoors with my two daughters, Mia (17) and Christina (10), and girlfriend, Leslie. Every chance we get, we’ll load a trailer with our two horses (Slammer and Pookie), grab our kayaks and head south on 67 to the country. JDW: How would you describe your personal style? MB: My taste is very European. Most of the designers I wear are edgy but not over the top. I’ve worked all my life not to have to wear a suit, but when I do, I love to put on a great Italian number with a splashy tie to accessorize it. Mark Branca is owner and founder of the established salon company Studio Branca. The result of monthly buying trips to New York, Los Angeles and Dallas, Leszcz’s selection runs the gamut—from belts and handbags to dresses and denim that range from sizes 2 to 16. Recently, a popular sell has been her iT Jeans—especially the Diva style which is made to fit women’s natural curves and was worn by Oprah in O magazine. So, make like your favorite daytime diva and browse and buy at Eye Candy boutique. As for splurging on more than one size? Ms. Winfrey would likely suggest it (eyecandystl.com; 314.477.5556).

On Q This month, Target launches a Designer Collaboration with Alexander McQueen. The limited-edition, Leila Moss-inspired McQ Alexander McQueen for Target collection will be composed of skinny jeans, studded jackets and mesh wrap jackets—all with McQueen’s signature edge, but at a sliver of his typical price points (target.com).

CLOSET CASE Women’s Closet Exchange, St. Louis’ nationally recognized consignment shop that houses such brands as Louis Vuitton and Chanel, is moving to a bigger and better location next door, and will carry even more authentic designer clothing. Head to the grand opening on March 21 for price cuts and special discounts for ALIVE readers—10 percent of sales benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation (11575 Gravois Rd., Sunset Hills, 314.842.8405).

here are several reasons most “regular” girls long for Oprah Winfrey’s lifestyle—a personal chef and the ability to close down a store on a whim so that she purchases in peace are just a few of her alleged, worth-pining-for luxuries. But, thanks to Jennifer Leszcz’s Eye Candy boutique, all can have a taste of the supposed “good life”. Open for seven years, Leszcz’s customers have the option of either shopping amongst the masses—during weekly trunk shows she hosts in her home—or by personal appointment, when she takes shoppers on personal tours of her coveted and affordable clothing and accessories; think MEK denim, Dex separates and shoes by Volatile.

adonna wore a wedding dress; Prince wore lace pants; Bret Michaels wore more makeup than Tammy Faye Bakker. Those were the good old days when musicians had signature styles and concert costume changes equated to more than stripping off a plain black jacket to display a plain white tee.

Luckily, some on the music scene are still having fun with fashion—and are turning to Saint Louis Fashion Week line Love Brigade for the perfect complements to their creative vocations. As designers of high-end, ready-to-wear men’s and women’s clothing and accessories, Alyssa Key, Jamie Rockaway and Christopher “Tinypants” Dang describe their brainchild as “musically inspired”— “Highway Dylan Revisited” meshed the music legend’s lyrics with futuristic elements; “Love, Kurt” for Fall centered on the artwork of the late, great Kurt Cobain; and the latest, “VIVA LA FUTURE” (S/S ’09) out of the new Ex-Oh diffusion line, stays true to Love Brigade’s musically charged roots, but is sold at budget-friendly prices. Meshing trend, music and love, the designers’ vision has given them the opportunity to outfit a wide range of artists, from Cyndi Lauper to Metallica’s Lars Ulrich—and we’re confident this “Brigade” will gain even more ground by winning over once-casual-and-content bands like, for instance, the Plain White T’s (lovebrigade.com). Love Brigade will debut their Fall/Winter ’09/’10 collection at Saint Louis Fashion Week’s Emerge show on March 27 (saintlouisfashionweek.com).

JEWELRY: Triple Threat By Jill Manoff

riple fudge, triple decker, “The Girls Next Door,”… It seems many of life’s guilty pleasures come in threes. The same rings true in the world of fine jewelry. There’s the ever-popular threestone drop necklace (standing for the past, present and future), the Cartier Trinity ring (standing for faithfulness, fidelity and love) and now, thanks to Prisma Collection, the Viviana ring line—which, among it’s many must-have platinum and yellow gold options, includes a stunning

selection of three-band rings. Available at family-owned Diamond & Jewelry Brokers Incorporated, a Master IJO Jeweler that has been delivering the finest quality diamonds and gemstones to St. Louis for more than 30 years, you can pick your perfect style and decide for yourself the meaning of each dazzling “deck.” Some fit together like a puzzle, some come connected, all you’ll want to wear as often as Hugh Hefner wears his robe (Diamond & Jewelry Brokers Incorporated, Ballwin, 636.391.6622).

t’s amazing someone didn’t think of this earlier—taking personalized exercise routines and synching them to your iPod, cell phone or burning them onto a DVD, blending the individualized results of a personal trainer with the convenience of portable instructions. Lucky for us, someone in St. Louis did—Morris Wisdom, a 20-year veteran of the personal training biz—and he opened Hi-Definition Fitness in October to deliver individual workouts in a digital format. During your initial visit to his Clayton workout studio, he’ll evaluate your overall fitness and nutrition habits, then develop a six-week circuit-training program designed especially for your goals and abilities. Within 24 hours, he’ll have the program ready to upload to your desired device or burn onto a DVD, complete with one-minute visual examples of each of the exercises with helpful voiceover reminders about form, pace and safety—additional one-on-one sessions are available to personally go over each workout component if desired. Each workout is designed to be efficient (by raising your heart rate while toning muscle), fast (a complete workout of five circuit cycles should be completed in 35 minutes) and require minimal equipment (dumbbells, an exercise ball and stair stepper), making them easily doable in a traditional gym, hotel gym or living room. Best of all, Wisdom’s average workout burns about 700 calories, and clients see an average body fat decrease of three percent in just six weeks. After the six-week session, Wisdom does a follow-up one-on-one session to assess results and assign a new workout. A major reason for his clients’ success is the personal aspect of the program—Wisdom sends a weekly email requesting clients to check in with their progress, problems and successes. Plus, clients are responsible for keeping a daily food diary with the help of an interactive online tool. Surprisingly, all of this costs less than the registration fee for a typical gym—just $45 per six-week program (additional one-on-ones are just $35 per session). “You don’t have to go broke to get fit,” admits Wisdom. And thanks to him, you barely have to leave your house (636.235.2510, hdfitcamp.com). 55

artners in putting on her first Midwest runway show, Laurel Berman and I go back; one year, to be exact. So, our recent discussion was equal parts business and girl talk—kind of like one of those meeting-over-coffee/catching-up-overthe-phone chats you’d typically read about between gal pals like Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge (who have both donned Berman’s Black Halo dresses) when promoting a project in Interview magazine. Although our convo focused on the success of her line (which, despite any economic crisis, has experienced its “best year to date”), her second Saint Louis Fashion Week showing (at PURE on March 26) and the evolution of Black Halo (with a new logo, label and website, to start), our talk did turn to “rag mags,” shoes and where we would eat when she came to town. There are reasons we get along so well. Jill Manoff: First, let me just say, I saw the photo

options for the cover—tell me your nude boots are Maison Martin Margiela… Laurel Berman: Oh my gosh…yes! I found them hidden under this really ugly pair of boots and they were in my size. I had to get them. I call them my sandal-boots. I LOVE Martin; I’m a big fan. JM: Well, St. Louisans are big fans of Black

Halo! We’re so excited that you’ll be debuting your Fall/Winter collection here for the second year in a row. LB: I’m really excited to see you guys—for you to see the collection and how it’s evolved. That’s really my challenge day to day; to keep it fresh, to keep it evolving and to keep it unexpected. When I first started, I was doing jersey all the time; it was a hot thing to do. Then, in the early 2000s, it was all about the sexy top; because denim was so hot, everyone wanted a sexy top to wear with their jeans. And then, all of a sudden, dresses were hot. We had the Jackie dress, which was really popular, and then a lot of dresses, dresses, dresses! Now I’m trying to do more of a collection, a more overall look.

JM: Your more-recent jumpsuit is getting about

as much press as the Jackie, don’t you think? LB: Definitely! The most recent celebrity to wear it was—did you see it?—Gaga! Lady Gaga! How great is that? I’ve had jumpsuits on my mind since the first collection. Until recently, they didn’t sell. Now, obviously, they’re the hottest thing, which is fun. I love them. I love making jumpsuits and I love wearing them. Remember last year? That’s what I wore to the fashion show! JM: Speaking of celebs, I always reference Us

Weekly’s “Who Wore It Best?” page [on which identical styles are shown, worn by two different stars] when describing your line. LB: I know; it’s pretty amazing. I can hardly believe it myself. Two weeks ago, we were two out of the three comparisons on the page! And, did you get to see the January cover of Lucky? It’s the “Mamma Mia” star—Amanda Seyfried— in Black Halo. It’s only our second cover; both have been Lucky. Mandy Moore was the first and that was before we ever even hired a PR firm. At first, I was like, “I don’t want PR; I don’t want a lot of hype. I want to reach my customer; I want to ship my clothes on time; I want to make clothes girls want to wear and keep coming back for. I need to build a strong business.” And I’ve always wanted fortune, not fame. I just wanted to be my idea of successful—and also to enjoy and love what I do.

The first time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into; this time, I’m going back to see friends.

JM: From what I can tell, the Jackie dress is still

popular! Are you still introducing new takes on that style? LB: Yes. I’m not going to walk away from her! It’s so funny—just yesterday, I got a picture of Howard Stern’s wife, Beth Ostrosky, wearing Black Halo. [My husband] was like, “Not another Jackie picture!”—because all of the movie stars are always shot in the Jackie. I keep reinventing her, but these days, the Jackie is essentially my pencil dress. Everyone loves a slim silhouette; it’s the most flattering—it makes us look lean, shows off our best assets and hides flaws. I still love it. ALIVEMAG.COM

JM: Who would you say is your customer? LB: Well, it’s Lady Gaga! How do you like

that? That’s so bizarre to me because she’s “out there.” And I also thought it was interesting that, around Christmas time, Britney Spears wore Black Halo to her brother’s wedding. It’s got a plunging neckline and a big keyhole, so it was sexy—but it was also very tailored and below the knee. We have a lot of doctors who come to our sample sales and love Black Halo. It’s hysterical; my doctor is in Beverly Hills and has a lot of celebrity clientele. I recently had an

appointment and, when I walked in, she was like, “I’m wearing your dress! I have Scarlett [Johansson] coming in today and I always wear Black Halo when I have someone special coming in.” So I would say that my customer is a professional woman, and I love that my friends come in and their moms come, too. It is kind of ageless. JM: Tell me about your climb to success. LB: When I got into this industry, I started at

the bottom in customer service and order entry; I wasn’t even a design assistant. But I worked my way up from there. And even though school was important, the real experience came on the job. That’s where you learn how to get it done; you deal with the time restraints and the pressure. Today, I’ve got my husband and partner and a staff of 30 people. It’s a lot to juggle, but I love it. JM: How has your line grown in the last year? LB: There’s no doubt that we had the best year in the history of the company last year. To be able to say that during these times is a gift; I feel really fortunate. But it challenges me; I know I have to step up my game, so my line is stronger than ever. Ideally, I need to be invincible. My stuff has to sell like it has a bulletproof vest on—guaranteed, no matter what. Every single piece has to be something every woman can’t live without. And it has to look like Black Halo. People can identify my stuff when they see it walking down the street because I’ve created that look, that image, the aesthetic that’s identifiable as Black Halo. I can’t believe that I have achieved that, that I have created a look that people can identify without looking at the label. That’s a milestone. I recognize that and can step back and say that out loud, and it’s like, “Wow! I’ve really accomplished something.” JM: Why did you decide to come back to St. Louis? LB: I’m excited to come back because I had such a great experience my first time. I love the people of St. Louis; I think it’s a great city and it was such a warm welcome, I can’t wait to return! And I’m excited for everyone to see the growth in the line—and in me, personally. I feel like when the line evolves and changes, so do I. It’s one year later and I’m looking forward to just having fun again. The first time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into; this time, I’m going back to see friends.

Most often in the form of satin or lace, lingerie-inspired pieces seem to show up perennially. With the cami top and Olsenprovoked slipdress trends having fallen by the wayside, the pajama bottom has been reared by designers as the latest rendition of boudoir-to-street. Replacing last season’s drop-crotch “Hammer pants,” spring’s staple trouser is fluid, cropped and best paired with contrasting tailored blouses and blazers. While Dolce & Gabbana’s silky, pol-

ka-dot takes could seamlessly transition from their runway models to Hugh Hefner, most instances are far more feminine, as in Betsey Johnson’s bright, floral capris or Roberto Cavalli’s ruffled pantaloons. Wear them comfortably through summer, but keep in mind—pairing slick slacks with that “bedhead” ’do you’ve been sporting would be like wearing your cowboy boots with a western hat. At a time when all of America seems to be looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, designers’ apparent “hippie” mindset—centered on peace and love— was a breath of fresh air in New York. Full of free-flowing minidresses and maxi sheaths in spring’s expected florals, the season’s most memorable derivatives of ’60s flower children were not donned in daisies or pansies, but—surprisingly—in butterflies. Though seen on swarms of tunics—think a black-on-white print at

Diane von Furstenberg and embroidered jewel tones at Anna Sui—and skirts, the proverbial Best in Show would likely go to Milly’s Michelle Smith, who introduced her collection with a more literal butterfly; a model in a bright, floor-sweeping caftan that fluttered like a wings down the runway. It is likely that hippie chicks like Kate Hudson and Drew Barrymore will take this trend and fly, fueling fashion’s emergence from a bleak cocoon. Here’s hoping it’s a sign of the times. 02. get your fill Climbing the charts in popularity are hyaluronic acid-based injectables like Restylane, Juvéderm and Perlane, making a significant jump from the fifth most-requested non-surgical treatment in 2006 to the second most popular in 2007. The reason? They effectively smooth out laugh lines, acne scars and nasolabial folds for up to six months by plumping up skin cells with a water-binding gel. Now if only there were an anti-water-binding gel that banished PMS bloating…

03. g-force For women who want an extra shot of bedroom bliss, there’s G-Shot, a non-surgical treatment offered at select medical spas and doctors’ offices that increases the size of the G-spot with a shot of collagen. For a few minutes of discomfort—the area is numbed first with a local anesthetic—ladies can up their satisfaction ante for up to four months.

04. good vibrations First there was microdermabrasion, a form of exfoliation that sprays micro-fine crystal particles across skin to gently smooth and revitalize. Then it went one step further with vibradermabrasion, which adds the benefits of a special vibrating device to the treatment to remove dead skin cells, resulting in a clearer, more even complexion. Plus, it’s a great add-on for treatments like peels or laser therapy, as it can boost their effectiveness by increasing absorption of light and skincare products. MARCH 2009 · ALIVE STL

05. bigger or bust It seems too good to be true—taking fat removed from hips, thighs or buns and having it redistributed to your breasts. But plastic surgeons are currently exploring this option for a more natural aesthetic and subtle shaping in augmentation options, adding to the already ample offering of silicone and saline disc implants, which are placed either behind or in front of the pectoral muscle. As women continue to look better and better as they age (in part thanks to advances in age-halting treatments), more are desiring to reverse the effects of gravity with a breast lift, which involves removing tissue and skin to create a more uplifted look—push-up bras be damned.

06. you’re so vein There are a ton of ways to ward off premature wrinkles, but not much hope of dissuading spider or varicose veins from forming. Schlerotherapy has always been the go-to standard for dissolving pesky veins (with an injection that causes the vein to collapse), but now IPL vein therapies have been shown to be highly effective—a light beam is pulsed onto the veins in order to seal them off, causing them to dissolve after two to three treatments.

07. smooth moves Cellulite plagues over 85 percent of the population, so it’s no wonder that removing it has become such a hot area of growth in new beauty technology. Three of the most promising treatments, SmoothShape, TriActive and VelaShape, combine light and radiofrequency energy with suction massage to dissolve deep fat cells that contribute to cellulite and tighten surrounding skin for a more toned appearance, with significant results seen in as little as two treatments per week for four weeks. Plus, research and FDA approval are underway for having SmoothShape cleared as an approved device for inch loss on places like thighs and waist. Less cellulite and smaller thighs? Sign us up.

08. threads of hope Whether they’re called lunchtime lifts, mini face lifts or thread lifts, the results are the same—a minimally invasive way to look years younger in about an hour. After inserting tiny barbed threads just below the skin via tiny incisions, they are sutured to fat or muscle and then tightened to pull and lift slack skin. While some swelling or bruising is common, the recovery time is

significantly less severe than a full-on face lift—a few days, versus a few weeks of curling up on the sofa away from public scrutiny.

09. points of youth Introducing the liquid face lift—a way to take off five years in about 30 minutes, with results lasting up to two years. By utilizing long-lasting injectables like Radiesse and Juvéderm, doctors

Infrared light heats the lower layer of the skin to stimulate collagen, while the surface stays cool through the specially designed handpiece, resulting in fewer lines, folds and looseness on the neck, face, abdomen, arms or thighs in as little as two treatments.

Wrinkles can be heated into submission using this elos laser that precisely heats the tissue within the treatment area to stimulate collagen and smooth wrinkles and improve skin texture over the course of two to three sessions.

For more subtle rejuvenation, there’s Genesis (which improves texture and reduces the appearance of blood vessels) and Affirm (which reverses sun damage issues like roughness and pigmentation), two lasers that offer little to no downtime with visible results after four to six sessions.

For dramatic results in as little as a single session, this 15-minute treatment removes the top layer of skin under local anesthesia, simultaneously heating deeper layers for increased collagen production over time to smooth lines and even skin tone, with only about three days of downtime needed.

The only laser that uses plasma energy (instead of light, radiofrequency or ultrasound) to treat wrinkles and sun damage, this treatment affects 100 percent of the skin’s surface for all-over improvement in as little as one session, with downtime lasting up to ten days.

10. fraction time With the trend tilting to less invasive procedures to correct concerns about our appearances, it’s easy to see why fractional resurfacing techniques (like Fraxel, ProFraxel and Mosaic) are all the rage—they offer maximum anti-aging benefits such as improving fine lines, fading sun spots and correcting uneven skin tone over the course of several treatments, with minimal downtime and risk. Each treatment creates thousands of microscopic holes in the skin, which stimulate collagen production and help speed cell regeneration, while leaving surrounding tissue intact, leading to significantly less healing time than old-school resurfacing techniques.

11. smarten up about shaping up Melt fat faster with SmartLipo and ProLipo, which both deliver laser energy through a tiny fiber inserted just under the skin via itsy incisions to melt fat cells while tightening surrounding skin, with results seen in as little as one week. Because they use such targeted lasers, it’s possible to remove fat from just about anywhere, even smaller areas such as double chins, love handles, upper arms, inner thighs and knees.

12. the eyes have it While Thermage is one of many devices used for facial tightening, it’s one of a few approved for use around the eye area. Eyes by Thermage uses the same technology of regular Thermage—utilizing radiofrequency to heat the under layer of the dermis, renewing collagen in all three layers of the skin—to reduce crepiness, smooth crow’s feet, improve under-eye bags and reduce hooding of upper eyelids without surgery or downtime.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Lip Protectant Stick SPF 15 Always a staple for keeping lips super-hydrated, soft and protected from the sun, it now comes in this campy ’50s-inspired packaging—so much better than your average lip balm ($25, Macy’s).

Nars The Multiple The original multi-tasking stick for subtle, sheer color on eyes, cheeks, lips and body, this creamy enhancer can stand-in for practically anything in your makeup case ($37, Sephora).

Jemma Kidd Ultra Soft Cleansing Wipes These super-quick, alcohol-free wipes remove makeup (even eye makeup) and add a dose of antioxidant green tea without leaving a hint of dryness ($10, Neiman Marcus).

13. great a-peel Unlike harsh chemical peels, microlaser peels can be customized to how light or strong you want them to be, depending on the level of skin tone improvement desired, ranging from 10 microns (with results similar to five microderm treatments every two weeks) to a full facial resurfacing. maximum precision and uniformity in results, which are achieved after just a single treatment.

14. hair today, gone tomorrow By now, everyone’s heard of laser hair removal and how it’s the fastest, most convenient way for long-term de-fuzzing by zapping the hair follicle for significantly less (or no) hair regrowth over the course of several treatments. But what still causes consumer confusion is the types of lasers used (there are five, but the IPL, diode and Nd:Yag are the most common) and how they are best suited to different hair colors and skin tone—so ask your practitioner which is right for you.

15. bring into focus Rarely can an hour-long surgery make such a dramatic impact on a person’s life as LASIK—chronic glasses- and contact-wearers can ditch a life filled with blurred vision, cumbersome eyewear and lens solution. Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatisms can be corrected using a laser that reshapes the cornea, helping it focus better. Recent years have also seen a surge in Custom LASIK, which can be used to reduce night vision issues like glare and halos by using a highly sophisticated computer analysis (originally developed through NASA) to diagnose and correct tiny irregularities in the eyes.

16. free and clear Acne isn’t just an issue for adolescents—over 50 percent of adults are plagued by the occasional pimple. For persistent blemishes, treatments like Isolaz, ClearLight and CureLight that utilize blue light have been shown to be tremendously effective in clearing up acne attacks by killing the bacteria that cause breakouts and shrink oil glands over the course of three-plus treatments, without the harsh side effects of acne medication like Accutane.

17. say cheese No matter what your smile concern, cosmetic dentistry has a way to fix it. Uneven teeth? There’s Invisalign, which repositions teeth using

clear plastic aligners that are adjusted every few weeks to gently move teeth in far less time than conventional metal braces. Stained smile from coffee or red wine? There are professional bleaching treatments like ZOOM! and BriteSmile, which combine special lights with whitening gels to brighten smiles up to nine shades in just a few hours. Receding gum line or chipped teeth? There’s gum contouring to cover long teeth or eroding gums and veneers (wafer-thin porcelain shells) that can be bonded to front of teeth, creating a perfect-looking smile.

18. fabulous foot fix While there are many upsides to wearing gorgeous high heels (the compliments, the self-esteem boost), there’s usually a downside too—the pain of walking in them. Thanks to Ultra Shock Wave Therapy, stiletto-wearers don’t have to suffer in silence, or even resort to expensive surgery to fix their foot woes. This non-surgical treatment sends shock waves into the areas that hurt, breaking apart scar tissue with radiofrequencies, allowing normal, healthy tissue to heal the injury and lessen pain. You can even resume wearing your regular shoes the next day—though you may have to wait a few days to don your four-inch platforms.

19. complexion perfection Whether it’s brown age spots, reddish acne scars or sun-damage splotching, FotoFacials can help even out hyperpigmentation over the course of five or six 20-minute treatments. Using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), doctors can destroy bothersome pigment while simultaneously stimulating collagen production.

20. stay firm Receiving a ton of coverage in the national media for its ability to simultaneously firm loose skin as it diminishes fine wrinkles, ReFirme is a virtually painless 30-minute treatment for tightening sag, firming flab and smoothing skin in as little as one to five sessions. The combined bi-polar radio frequency and light energies (a technology called elos) precisely heat deep tissue to stimulate collagen, resulting in improved skin tautness and smoothness with little to no downtime.

Like no other car dealership in St. Louis Service is the difference Bill Dean does have a corner office, but not in the back where you think it might be. It’s the first office on the left when you walk into the showroom. He shares it with Colin Berndt, his manager of 13 years. The door is always open, so you can just stick your head in and say hello. “Someone stops by every day to grab a free car wash, a cup of coffee and then sits down for a chat,” says Bill. “There is no other dealership like us,” says Colin Berndt. “When you walk in our showroom it feels hip. We’ve got great music playing and our staff is really tuned into to our customers. Dave, Eddie, Sonny, Chuck and Shane are not your typical car guys. They are the best at selling and servicing customers in the St. Louis Area.” Dean Team Kirkwood is a Volkswagen Dealership, but if you look closely at the lot, you will also see Porsches, Audis, Mercedes, BMWs, Bentleys, Jaguars, Lexus’ and Land Rovers. “We have the best pre-owned highend cars in the Midwest and if we don’t have what you’re looking for then we find it, go get it, and deliver it to you. “It’s all about great cars and personal service,” says Bill Dean. “Our customers know they can come to us for any make and model of car. I never understood bouncing from store to store. I think everyone should have one automotive sales professional

who helps them with all their needs. You don’t go three places to get your hair cut, or visit four accountants at tax time. You rely on one person whom you trust and who knows your situation.” “We will find you a car you love, then take care of you like no other dealer in St. Louis,” says Dave Schultz. “If you need service, I’ll give you a free loaner car. Stuck on the side of the road? Call your salesman and they will bring you a car and wait for the tow truck. Want free car washes and free state inspections? No problem.” D’Marco Farr and Andy Van Slyke are both customers of Dean Team Kirkwood. “They treat you like a professional athlete, without having to lace up your shoes,” says Andy Van Slyke, former St. Louis Cardinal. “I buy all my cars from them.” “We pride ourselves on being the best,” says Bill Dean. “The best cars. The best service. Period.” If you’re in the market for a new Volkswagen or a high-end pre-owned car, visit Dean Team Kirkwood. EL BORRACHO Downtown welcomes a spirited, south-of-the-border spot. By Cristy Miller Photo by Liz Reiff Sloan

E

l Borracho’s arrival is exactly what Downtown needed: A conceptually well-done and good Mexican restaurant has been long overdue for Downtowners. Sure, we can dine on steak, sushi, tapas, burgers and pizza—and happily, but as the city has grown, so has our desire for more dining options. Enter El Borracho Mexican Cantina, a south-of-the-border spot offering fresh fare and specialty spirits. Although El Borracho is new, it feels like a neighborhood joint I’ve been coming to for a while. Maybe that’s because not only is it located in a familiar space (the former Nectar Lounge), but it’s also owned by familiar faces; Pete Ferretti and Buddy Coy partnered with Pat Shannon and Gary VanMatre Jr., as well as Chef John Griffiths, who left his stint as executive chef at An American Place a few years ago and recently reemerged on the scene as a consulting chef. With El Borracho, this team has created a successful new cantina, complete with Mexican artwork, a back bar made from 50-year-old saw-cut hickory and a handful of HD TVs for game watching. Having Chef Griffiths develop the menu is a perfect match. His fine dining background, use of quality ingredients and his fresh take on traditional Mex cuisine results in delicious, down-to-earth dishes that aren’t swimming in sauces or overwhelmed by too many flavors. Case in point, the guacamole. Never have I heard more people rave about guacamole, but the housemade combo of fresh avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro and a touch of lime lives up to its reputation. The queso blanco is noteworthy 99

ALIVE STL · MARCH 2009

of a mention as well—I particularly enjoyed the fresh green chiles and scallion flavor, though it’s somewhat filling, so be sure to pace yourself for the menu ahead, which includes appetizer options like quesadillas, nachos and chicken flautas. For entree options, diners can choose from a build-your-own taco menu and can even choose how it’s prepared—authentic Mexican (“pancho,” a steamed white corn tortilla with cilantro and onion) or Americanized (“gringo,” steamed flour tortilla with onion, tomato, cheese, lettuce and sour cream). The eight fillings choices include shredded pork, housemade spicy Mexican sausage, ground beef, stewed chicken and grilled beef skirt steak. The beef and chicken enchiladas (which come broiled with cheese and are topped with a spicy red sauce) housemade tamales, burritos and a stuffed poblano pepper round out the rest of the larger dishes. And good news for late-night eaters (and those who may saunter over from The Pepper Lounge): El Borracho serves food until 1:30am, Tuesday through Sunday and is also a great drink destination with a solid menu of margaritas, sangria and mojitos made with freshsqueezed juices. THAXTON SPEAKEASY A laid-back gin joint that’s easy on the eyes. By Amy De La Hunt Photo by Liz Reiff Sloan

T

he Thaxton went undiscovered for years. Designed in 1928 by architecture firm Klipstein & Rathman (who also designed Downtown’s Civil Courts Building), the Art Deco structure was originally built to house a prototype display space for Eastman Kodak. In recent years, the building has been exquisitely restored and has served as a unique yet languishing special events venue. Enter former Atomic Cowboy owner Peter Venezia and business partner Kim Pitliangas. Taking their theme from the Thaxton’s glory years, they brought a basement nightclub to the space, the Thaxton Speakeasy, as a weekend draw. When clubgoers enter (from the alley, naturally) they’re met by a tall, imposing man in black with a long, white beard, perfectly cast as a bouncer. Ask him about the art, though, and Terry Walthall’s tough-guy façade cracks—his hand-painted ceiling murals on the first floor and textured “stone” walls in the basement are among the Thaxton’s crowning architectural details. Walthall’s presence illustrates the close ties between the club’s management and the rehabbers, Antique Architectural Décor. “It’s like a little family business,” says Venezia. Another example: Pitliangas’ father, Mark, owns the Thaxton and the rehab company. (An artist himself, he contributed the hand-etched glass and the “Kings” and “Queens” tiles

marking the restrooms.) His attention to detail is obvious; the Thaxton is a feast for the eyes. As the Thaxton books more receptions and parties, Venezia warned, the Speakeasy’s theme will be played up more—already, there’s a password to enter. If you don’t know it, you’ll have to shell out a couple of clams. (To get hip to the password and find out when the club’s closed for private events, check thaxtonspeakeasy.com or thaxtonbuilding.com.) Venezia’s a master at creating a vibe, and he’s made the Speakeasy into an unpretentious hangout, whether you’re going for Friday evening happy hour or late at night to hear Venezia’s longtime DJ friends—some from Atomic Cowboy’s original Maplewood location—playing underground music, lounge and house into the early morning. “It’s good to have your friends involved when you do something,” says Venezia. Once Walthall lets you in, you’ll feel as if you’re halfway to friendship already. Thaxton Speakeasy 1009 Olive St. Downtown 314.241.3279 Hours: Fri., 4:30pm-1:30am; Sat., 8pm-1:30am

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: VELOCITY CAFÉ & CYCLERY Blazing a trail as St. Louis’ first combination café/bicycle shop, Velocity Café & Cyclery is a cyclist’s dream realized. Here, they can rent a bicycle by the hour, have their own bike repaired and have a fresh, made-to-order meal all in one place. The brainchild of mother-son entrepreneurs Susan Gyorog and Matthew Roedder, Velocity opened late last year. The concept has gained momentum in cities like Austin, Minneapolis and San Francisco, where bicycle shops began offering coffee drinks and bakery items in addition to repair and rental services to keep both cyclists and their equipment in top form. At Velocity, located on the corner of Pershing and DeBaliviere (minutes from bicycle-friendly Forest Park), you can sit and unwind with a warm latte and a hearty turkey and pesto panini, or grab an energizing banana and espresso smoothie or a healthy fruit parfait and hit the bike path. Whether your cycling skills are on par with Lance Armstrong, or you haven’t ridden a bike in years, no worries. Velocity Café & Cyclery is a one-stop cycle shop that will keep both you and your bike in the right gear (286 DeBaliviere Ave., Central West End, 314.361.7433).—Sheniqua Faulkner
