THE GENERATIONAL FARM SHED

In a positive trend, more and more “farm kids” are electing to return to the land compared to a decade ago.

With this generational partnership in mind, Respected Farmers see the value in ramping up their investment in farm infrastructure that makes ‘coming home’ a more attractive proposition.

Better working conditions and time efficient work practices mean that Top Producers are including a BIG new shed as part of their legacy in the succession planning phase. 1952 -

The long-awaited return of ‘legacy farming’ is here

Gone, it seems, is the “despair” of 20 years ago when kids walked off the land

now they’re returning in droves as the rural sector booms, which means more and more sheds are being invested in with an eye to the future.

The family farm revival has been driven in part by investment in infrastructure as farmers now think “family long term”, particularly when it comes to sheds. Take for example…

Paul and Anne Jones from “Riverview” at Koolunga who recently invested in a 21m x 48m x 6.4m MEGA Machinery shed & Workshop because they liked the “structural integrity” and “outstanding quality” of the Grant Sheds product. They said, “It was well worth the investment, and itwillbenefitourfarmingoperationsforgenerationstocome.”

Brett & Geoff McEwan from Inglewood in Victoria. Geoff’s father started a dryland dairy before WWII. Geoff took the farm over and grew it and has now welcomed son Brett and his family. The 15m sliding roof fertiliser shed Geoff purchased from Grant Sheds means, “Brettwillgeta good20yearsoutofit”. He also said he invested in the shed because no one else makes them and Grant Sheds reputation and quality of product gave him confidence that it would be a solid long-term investment.

Tom & Andrew Weckert near Brinkworth SA. For the better part of 150 years the Weckert family has farmed “Angle Grove.” Tom is the fifth generation and they recently invested in a 15m x 36m x 6.3m drive through machinery shed from Grant Sheds. Infrastructure investments like this are part of a secure future because Tom one day wants to offer his three children the same opportunity to continue the vibrant family tradition.

If you’re thinking “generational farming” there are few better places to start than a quality shed from Grant Sheds. Keep reading for more “generational shed” ideas to help your planning process, plus read on for a very special offer.

Generational Farm Workshop Sheds

1 6th Generation of Yorke Peninsula farmers

Rundle Farming, Kulpara, Upper Yorke Peninsula SA

“We couldn’t have hoped for a better shed!” Mark Rundle

27m x 60m x 7.5m MEGA Workshop & Machinery Shed. Fully enclosed. 1x12m & 1x18m mega wide beams on 1 side. Glideeasy, bottom roll sliding doors at beams and on 1 end, 2x5.5m wide industrial roller doors (RHS in above photo). Skylights.

2 2 Generations of Riverland Growers

The Rundle family wanted a “decent workshop” to make it more pleasant doing machinery maintenance and making things, regardless of weather conditions. Also, they wanted a machinery shed with easy access to trucks, tractors etc “We decided to build a shed that increased our machinery storage AND have a new farm workshop to use for the next 20+ years,” Mark notes.

“Everything we asked to have in the shed has been done just as we wanted…we couldn’t have hoped for a better shed.”

Louis Curtis, Riverland SA

21 Grant Sheds over 30 yrs

“The investment in a shed allows easy machinery maintenance, makes the machines last longer & the resale value is hugely better.”

Louis Curtis (at left with Brenton, Grant Sheds)

18m x 63m x 6.3m MEGA Workshop & Machinery Shed. 27m of the shed (this end) is a fully enclosed workshop with 6x4.5m wide glide-easy bottom roll sliding doors for security. The other end is open one side in 9m bays.

Louis has forged ahead of the footsteps of his hardworking, Italian migrant father. Recognising that farming enterprises need to get bigger & be more efficient, he’s now growing a large area of almonds & grapes. He notes the importance of shedding the expensive machinery assets of the business. “I can’t handle spending half a million dollars on a harvester then leaving it outside. If you do, wiring breaks down, paint fades, hoses decay, LCD screens black out. Everything should be stored inside, undercover.” With 21 Grant sheds on his properties, Louis is practicing what he says.

Generational Farm Workshop Sheds

4 Generations in Hummocks region SA

Taylors of ‘SeaView’ & ‘Pine Park, Port Wakefield

30m x 42m x 7m MEGA Workshop & Machinery Shed. Fully enclosed. 2x12m widespan beams, 6 glide-easy bottom roll sliding doors for machinery access, roller door for workshop access, dividing wall between the 2 areas.

Time, space & safety are the reasons Andrew, Richard & Brandon Taylor invested in this new MEGA shed. The family enterprise dates back 60 years and is now in its 4th generation. They’ve been able to centralise all their machinery in this mega shed and the dedicated workshop is clean and ideal for routine machinery servicing. Andrew says the shed adds value to his equipment and to the farm. “It’s a good decision and for young Brandon, it’s going to be a shed that will be here for his lifetime.”

Low sliding doors can be opened for breeze-through or for sheep access if used for on-farm sheep sales.

15m x 45m x 6.3m Workshop & Machinery Shed. 5x9m & 2x6m widespan beams, 10 full height glide easy, bottom-roll sliding doors across the front & 5 x 3m high sliding doors on other sides for easy access & breezeways.

Phil & Sandy had clear ideas on what they wanted for their long-awaited farm workshop that would make it a desirable and comfortable place to service & repair farm vehicles & machinery and be an enjoyable workspace for welding projects. Grant Sheds worked with them to recommend efficient ways to capture breezes, making it a better workspace in the summer.

With the likelihood of Chelsea joining them on the farm before long, this will be a 5th generation team with a bright future.

Mark Bigg, ‘Majula Farms’ Balaklava, SA

“I can come in with the air seeder, swing it around without unhooking it & just drop it in the shed. Later I can hook it on & swing it out again. Same with the header & combs so I’m not backing anything in much anymore. Sheds are never big enough, you always seem to run out of room.” With 20 year old son, Liam now home on the farm, Mark says, “I’m trying to stay a step ahead and think for the future, so I go big on the shed.” He’s also found that mechanics enjoy working in the clean, covered environment but laments, “They don’t offer a reduced fee for it !!”

Anthony Combe, ‘Graemoor’ Crystal Brook

“Sheds are never big enough. My advice..? Work out the size you think you need … and then DOUBLE IT… no kidding!”

Anthony Combe (at left with wife Gabby)

21m x 48m x 6.4m MEGA Machinery Shed. Fully enclosed for security, 4 x 12m mega widespan bays (including a drive-through section for long, combination air-seeder), 12 x 4m wide glide-easy, bottom roll sliding doors.

When Anthony Combe invested in this new shed, he wanted it big enough to protect ALL his valuable farm machinery, have wide bays & a drive-through bay for his long combination air-seeder so he could just drive in & turn the key off. No more time-consuming, reversing & unhitching. Now he says he’s filled the shed ...& wishes it was bigger! With 20 yr old son Angus now part of the family farm enterprise, they are all enjoying this shed that will stand for generations.

Greg & Sarah Klopp, Maitland, Yorke Peninsula

Greg believes that big productivity gains are achievable with large, expensive, reliable farm machinery but it means it really does need to be protected, from theft and the ravages of weather.

That’s why he bought a Mega Machinery Shed from Grant Sheds and is delighted with its strength and sturdiness. An additional benefit is that a water tank at the end of the shed, fed by the 1008m2 roof, saves 25,000 litres of water for every 1” of rain and Greg uses that for his crop spraying needs.

9 3rd Generation Mixed Farming Operation

Paul Jones & Family, “Riverview” Koolunga SA

Paul Jones is a 3rd generation cropping, sheep & cattle farmer. When he was planning his new shed he first viewed 4 other Grant sheds in his area. He says he felt compelled to buy a Grant shed after seeing the quality & strength of the framing & doors and the universally positive recommendations. Wife Anne adds, “It was a smooth process from original enquiry to building.” Paul says it will benefit their farming operations for generations to come.

Family farming continues at Pinnaroo with Todd & Bec Niejalke taking over from Jeff & Es and Jeff’s father before that. That tradition may continue, but there will be no pressure on Todd’s children. The Niejalke’s have 4 Grant sheds in a relationship that has spanned 3 decades. Todd explains that the shed buying process is easy, “Just a couple of phone calls to get help to plan the shed, order it and it’s underway. You don’t have to organize anything yourself really. Everyone is polite & easy to deal with.”

Rachel & Scott have been undertaking a serious investment in farm infrastructure, building 8 Grant sheds over the past 15 years. Scott notes that the protection the sheds give his machinery means it’s an investment that quickly pays for itself. “When we sell the first piece of machinery that we store in there, I reckon we have the shed half paid for with the extra re-sale value.” And why he chooses Grant Sheds? “They’re easy to deal with. They have the builders, everything’s approved and we just go on with a normal day.”

For nearly 150 years, and now run by 5th generation Tom, the Weckert family has passed the family farm baton since 1878, cropping at Brinkworth and running sheep at Orroroo. With their new shed, Tom explains, “We wanted to be able to drive the machines in, not have to unhook stuff, and just turn the key off.” They opted for a Grant shed due to the good service, easy single point of contact, clear pricing and timelines adhered to. “You know what you’re up for … and when the shed was delivered, it was standing within 3-4 days.”

Grant Sheds MEGA Sheds

SHED EXPERT: “For longevity, these are my preferred farm sheds”

With years of engineering expertise under his belt, Stephen Carlsen is considered a “go-to guy” on Kangaroo Island when it comes to farm sheds.

Solid Universal Beam columns & webbed roof trusses, heavy duty fascia plates & roof to column connection plates. bolted with 8x20mm high tensile 8.8 bolts for a super strong connection.

“I’ve reviewed a number of shed companies, and as an engineer, it’s the sheer strength of ‘Grant’ sheds and attention to design detail that makes them stand out,” he said.

“They’re all pre-punched and can be erected with no problems at all. Some of the others, you have to do a lot of drilling, including the purlins and everything, but these are like a Meccano set that you just bolt together.”

Stephen says a key Grant Sheds feature is the foundations. The columns are bolted onto the concrete footings rather than set within the slab (see photo left) which ensures no rusting beneath the concrete.

Also of note is the extra strength of Grant Sheds purlins and framing joints (see photos above left & below) which create a solid structure that stands the test of extreme weather and time, plus allows for greater accuracy during the building process.

Heavy, welded steel baseplates & 4 large footings bolts anchor the shed. This creates a superior connection, prevents rusting issues and is better than nonwelded plating systems.

And Stephen says he’s experienced first-hand what happens when details like this are overlooked. Some shed roofs feel unstable as the builders are walking across them during construction.

“We’ve had sheds that have frightened us,” he concedes.

“But with Grant’s, we’re not afraid to walk across the roof. The purlins don’t buckle over.”

Stephen runs an engineering business that handles everything from machinery repairs to welding and steel fabrication and is well-placed to offer an opinion on what it takes these days to create a “generational shed” that will serve the farm family faithfully for decades to come.

Our unique, glide-easy bottom-roll sliding door system ‘locks’ them in position to prevent blow-offs.

A Heavy Duty, Welded Fascia Bracket creates a strong connection

B Solid Steel Cross Bracing in the roof & walls ensures the shed cannot ‘sway’ in high wind & uplift situations

C Fly Braces tie the bottom chord of the roof truss to each purlinprevents twisting in high wind, uplift conditions

*Structural details vary depenent upon shed type & size. Grant Sheds manufactures both Super-C & Mega Shed range

D Super Strong Open Web Roof Trusses & UB Columns for strength in these mega-sized farm sheds

Brothers Tom & Sam, & father Glen, focus their ‘Trengove Partners’ enterprise on sheep & cropping, including hay production. Quality retention was the reason they bought a mega hay shed. “We chose 8.2m height because we truck 3 high in the paddock, so when we unload we just have 3 lifts of 3 which is time efficient. It’s just a quick in & out,” Tom said. The 8.1m wide bays are perfect for 3x8’ bales. Tom & Sam have their own young families now. Time will tell if there is a 5th generation of Trengove farmers.

Andrew & Danielle are focused grain growers. “Marketing is a big thing,” Andrew says. “You have to follow the markets & price streams & hope you make the right decisions.” In a bid to hedge that bet, the family have purchased 5 Grant sheds over the years. The hay sheds maintain the hay quality & provide a financial return when hay processors pay them to store quality hay that can be accessed through the year. With their teenage children showing keen interest in farming, it’s likely there will be a 5th generation coming home.

4th Generation Mid-North Farmers

Stephenson’s of ‘Ardovie’ Spalding SA

4th generation Tyler Stephenson stepped up to manage the family farm, with his dedicated mother Pauline, when he was just 19 years old, after his father Kerry died suddenly in 2011. They do cropping & sheep & prefer to have their own equipment so as not to get caught up with sometimes unreliable contractors.

24m x 48.6m x 8.2m MEGA Hay Shed holds 3250 high density, large square bales, 9 bales high (10 at gable centre) & 3 bales per 8.1m bay. Bale bumpers on rear wall protect wall iron.

They also added a new Grant mega hay shed to their farm infrastructure and say it doesn’t take long to pay for itself with the better prices for shedded hay that retains colour & quality.

Sam Mumford, Kangaroo Island, SA

Sam is an optimistic person by nature. After being burnt out by the 2019-20 Kangaroo Island bushfires, he said, “There’s no point being a pessimistic bastard because that job’s already been taken.”

And with wife Helen and 3 sons, he said, “How cool is it that we get to rebuild with our kids?”

Sam Mumford (with Danny of Grant Sheds at left)

Advice from farmers who’ve recently built a farm shed

If you’re thinking about the dimensions of “Generational Shed” should be, heed this advice. With farms and machinery getting bigger almost every year Respected Farmers agree…

“It’s never big enough!”

Part of the planning process Grant Sheds takes farmers through factors in likely uses, future growth and of course budget. The message however is clear for anyone in the market for a Generational Shed… make it as big as you can!

Here’s what they say:

Matthew Thiel from Pinnaroo built a 15m x 36m x 6.3m drive through machinery shed in 2018. “When I thought about putting this shed up, it is probably a bit bigger than what I needed. But as I found out when I put up the previous one, it’s never big enough. So, yeah. I reckon everyone should put up a bigger shed than what they need. Work out what you want and then add another half or so. It’s bigger than we need but we will fill it up, we can whack a bit more gear in there yet.”

Andrew Weckert from Brinkworth said, “Sheds are never big enough so go as large as you can.”

Mark Bigg from Balaklava invested in a huge 20m x 78m x 7.5m shed, “So I can come in with the air seeder, swing it around without unhooking it and just drop it in the shed. Same with the header and combs so I’m not backing anything in much anymore. Sheds are never big enough, you always seem to run out of room, or things creep in from the side there or maybe I’ve got too much sh*t! I’m trying to stay a step ahead and think for the future, so I go big on the shed.”

Peter and Jackie Shultz from Loxton built a 15m x 48m shed with 12m openings “Which means we can fit weedicide units and spray plants. With the old shed we never had enough room. Now we can take a loaded semi in there. Now it’s probably a third full but I’ll bring my older stuff in and there’ll still be room for a while. It’s been something we’ve needed for a long time.”

When it comes to Generational Sheds, as farmers say… “Size DOES Matter!”

Now is a great time to get your SIZE MATTERS Mega Shed.

Let the team at Grant Sheds guide you through a process to discover the best shed type, size & layout to suit your own personal & farm circumstances. We can show you a few options to help you make your decision. Then, when you’re ready to order, we’ll make everything easy for you.

Sorry gents, they say size doesn’t matter (wink wink), but when it comes to Generational Sheds it seems like it’s a case of “Go Big or Go Home.”

More Generational Farm Sheds

Rowntree’s of Ardrossan

5 Generations of Yorke Peninsula farmers

Ben wanted a shed suitable for protecting his large, expensive farm machinery that could also be used for on-farm grain storage when needed. With design help from Grant Sheds, Ben settled on this massive shed with the grain lining and extra load-bearing strength in the walls to cover both needs.

And why Grant Sheds?

20m x 36m x 6m Dual Purpose Grain & Machinery Shed. 4 x 5m wide easy-glide sliding doors on bottom roll tracks that open onto outrigger frames allows the full 20m end of the shed to be opened up. 3.5m grain lining allows grain storage at harvest.

“I realised you’ve got a pretty good name in the shed building industry.” And the experience met his expectations from planning to construction. “I couldn’t speak highly enough of it,” Ben says.

Florance Families, ‘Vivonne Heights’ K.I.

K.I. farmer, Damien Florance says, “You’ve got to do what you’re good at.” And on his family’s 3000 acres of property, they’re very good at sheep & cattle.

26m x 24m MEGA Sheep Yard Cover improves conditions for sheep and farm workers alike. Shade in the summer and keeping sheep dry in the winter allows shearing to continue unabated by wet weather.

They’ve invested in their sheep enterprise with this shearing yards cover. A similar yard cover on another property & 2 Grant Sheds sliding roof fertiliser sheds shows their commitment to executing farm infrastructure improvements for ongoing benefit. Son Lachie returned to the family farm recently & they have a very bright 5th generation future.

Generational Hay & Fodder Sheds

21 Generations of Business, but not all farming

Peter Freeman, Renmark Business was his family background but Peter’s enthusiasm for ag saw him diversify. During 40 years producing almonds, Peter has always been keen to minimise chemicals & water use & reduce workload at harvest. Shoring up the future was why he invested in 2 big sheds. At harvest they save the effort & danger of tarpaulin use if rain is likely. The ability to store the nuts quickly, continue harvesting & deliver to processors as fits their schedules means the sheds ‘cycle through’ a large tonnage of almonds.

17m x 37.5m x 5.3m Dual Purpose Almond & Machinery Shed. Outside of the almond season, valuable farm machinery is stored in the shed to protect it from the ravages of our harsh Aussie sun.

“Almonds need a lot of expensive machinery so I don’t like having it out in the weather. The dual purpose of this shed is ideal. ”
