What Makes Country Life So Good? ...

FAMILY, FRIENDS & COMMUNITY

See You At The Field Days Eyre Peninsula 9th-11th August Riverland 16th-17th September

Recent Farm Visits Ali & Danny spent a weekend in the mid Yorke Peninsula area during June. We always enjoy our time out visiting our amazing Aussie farmers and learning their stories to bring to you. We visited Tom Saint at Maitland to help him plan out the finer details of his new shed. And we enjoyed a very pleasant Sunday afternoon BBQ with Greg & Sarah Klopp and their delightful family on the Sunday. After a fun interview with them, you can read their story on page 5 of this edition.

Celebrity Spotter Our Sales Manager, Brenton, was in the Mildura Plaza, food court area, 11 month old baby Jaxon in his arms, checking out the dining menus above the serving areas. He Hears a call out…

Mural of history at Ardrossan. I know I’m getting “older” because these history items gain my attention.

NSW Driving Holiday We enjoyed a two week drive around areas of NSW back in May. First it was a quick zip over to Sydney for business purposes and we were fascinated by the growing of cotton across the Hay Plains, but didn’t have time to stop and investigate. Then we spent a week in the Blue Mountains, which we can highly recommend. That was some chillout time, but also spent some time on business planning… the things you do when you run your own business. I know, you’d understand that! Next it was up to Newcastle where business friends showed us through the scheduling system of their safety solutions business, plus a quick catch up with a few people we know up there. And then on our return, it was over the mountains home via Dubbo, Parkes and Hay. Some think us mad, but we really enjoy a short driving holiday like this. We never ceased to be amazed by unexpected sights that we see and the always friendly hospitality of country cobbers. Above: Ali & Danny in the Blue Mountains.

“Oi, How’s the shed biz going?” “Can they be talking to me?” he thinks. Looks around, - sees nothing. Again, louder this time, “How’s the shed biz going?” “OK, they’ve gotta be talking to me!” Turns around, to see a man grinning and waving. Turns out to be Neil Finch, of Sunnyside Station via Robinvale, Vic, who gets Farm Gate News and recognised Brenton from it. Brenton was in his ‘civvies,’ not his Grant Sheds uniform, so Neil did a good job recognising him.

Above: One of many private gardens open to the public in Mt Wilson

We were fascinated to discover these basalt rocks unexpectedly as we drove over the ranges to Dubbo. They are similar to rocks we saw at ‘The Giants Causeway’ in Northern Ireland in 2014 (right), but horizontal instead of vertical. This massive structure is the Dubbo Livestock Exchange. Not one of ours but an interesting and enormous structure. A shame there were no sales on this day. We’d have enjoyed the hustle and bustle of a sale day.

Good on you for calling out Neil. It made Brenton’s day and he came home to tell us all about it.

So that’s it for now, I hope you’ve enjoyed sharing a few of our Holiday Happy Snaps. Until Next time, Brenton with his baby son Jaxon, his kelpie pup ‘Sansa’ and Ali & Danny’s Koolie ‘Chino’

The Goal Is Clear

Conquer Cancer In Our Lifetime This will be Danny’s 3rd year of participating in the 200km MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer, in Perth, raising much needed funds for cancer research. With your help, we’ve raised $9300 to this important fund-raising campaign over the past 2 years and it’s Danny’s aim to continue to build on this tally each year. 2014 $4465 2015 $4835 2016 $ TBA This event, with around 1300 riders, raises around $5 million each year to help find cures for cancer. The team that Danny is part of raises around $40,000 each year. Danny’s father battled breast cancer, prostate cancer and bladder cancer during his lifetime. Ali’s sister died at 30 years of age from complications after cancer treatment for a cancer that should have been curable. I’m sure you have your own story of someone close to you who has battled cancer.

So Danny is riding for each and every one of us who would like to see this terrible disease stopped in its tracks. Last year he did the ride while overcoming a chest infection, causing him to cough almost uncontrollably with every hill that made him need to suck air more deeply. He battled on, with support from his team mates, knowing that undergoing cancer treatment is much worse. He’ll do the hard yards again this year… Would you help by sponsoring him? You can donate by either of the methods listed at right. Thank You For Your Support *All donations will be linked to Danny and are tax deductible. We’ll publish a list of donors in a future edition of Farm Gate News to thank you.

Sponsor Danny’s Ride To Cure Cancer. Here’s How: Cheque made out to ‘MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer’. Post it to Danny Halupka, Grant Sheds, Box 29, Monash SA 5342 and we’ll send it on. Protect Your Hay for Flexibility And

IMPROVE PROFITABILITY “I just wanted strength where there’s activity in and out,” Rodney says. “I thought I was perfect for a long time, but every now and then things don’t go according to plan.” Bale bumpers on the rear wall help avoid damage to the wall iron when filling or emptying hay bales from the shed.

25% annual hay loss issues prompted the building of this hay shed to retain hay quality Keith farmer, Rodney Lush, with his new 12m x 24.3m x 6.3m open fronted Grant

Rodney also opted for the 12m depth (span) to accommodate machinery when needed, and an extra metre of height which was minimal additional cost. As for the shed’s construction, from council approval to completion, it was a smooth process.

Sheds hay shed that has 8.1m bays for ideal large bale storage and front columns made of superstrong UB to prevent tractor damage if bumped during loading and unloading.

“The service from Grant Sheds was excellent, always only a phone call away...the guidance, getting me through the design process to the delivery, to the erection, was terrific.

Like most farmers, Rodney and Sally Lush appreciate that sometimes things don’t go according to plan. It’s this philosophy that’s seen them adapt to three years of low rainfall on their 1250 ha (3000 acre) farm, Hyfield Pastoral, at Coombe, near Keith, SA. This also resulted in some extra forethought when it came to designing their new shed.

The planning process, including council, all went according to plan, and then once the shed was delivered and the builders got here, I said ‘Hi’ and ‘Bye’ in the morning and the blokes went at it and had it up in three and a bit days.”

Rodney and Sally’s farm comprises 160ha of irrigation and 1090ha of rain-fed perennial pasture (lucerne, veldt grass and chicory). The property produces lucerne seed and runs 1500 ewes for wool, prime lambs and surplus sheep. Pasture and irrigation renovation programs also include some cereal cropping.

And Rodney’s more than happy with the result. “I tend to work on the philosophy that

The groundwater quality across the region tends to be higher EC but the salinity actually stresses the lucerne plants and creates a better environment for seed set. They have both centre pivot and flood irrigation and some, but not all of their irrigation is automated. “The day bays are done manually and the night bays are automated,” say Rodney. “This technology helps us to manage fatigue and maintain focus right through the irrigation season .” It’s the hay storage that prompted Rodney to invest in a 12m x 24.3m x 6m Grant Hay Shed.

“We’ve been cutting hay and storing it outside for many years, with annual losses of at least 25 per cent once we get through autumn.” “We’re looking to preserve the quality of the hay so that if we have surplus after an opening break, we can sell it. We retain enough to get us through. We’ll always keep a bit up our sleeve. With sandy soils and perennial pastures, we need the capacity to protect our landscape and pasture base.” (ie.

P4

avoiding over-grazing). Recent dry years saw the construction of a containment feeding area for the sheep flock to achieve this goal. The hay shed is built next to the containment feeding area for efficiency” When it came to designing and constructing his new shed, Rodney says, “My main concern was strength, then getting the openings right so we didn’t have half a bay that we couldn’t access with a tractor or a bale of hay, and then just getting it up in time….” “We wanted to get three bales across in each bay and we didn’t want to have to be absolutely perfect with our stacking or bale size.” This resulted in three 8.1m openings, which are ideal for storing three bales per bay, without wasting space. The front columns are made of Universal Beam (UB) that are very tough and most unlikely to get damaged if hit by a reversing tractor.

You See and Remember Strength and Quality Longer Than Price. We’re building for the long term so if the situation demands strength and quality and you can afford it, build it . That’s why we built a Grant Shed.” Now he’s just hoping for a solid year ahead with “good rain, good seed yields, good lambing and good hay cuts”. “...and maybe another shed, we’ll see. We’ve got other hay that we haven’t got stored under cover, but who knows? It would be nice to have a bit more undercover storage.”

Expensive Farm Machinery

MUST BE PROTECTED When father and son team Robert and Greg Klopp built their Grant Sheds machinery shed at the family farm on the Yorke Peninsula, they knew it needed to be big. But little did they realise how many contenders would be vying for the space.

There’s the machinery of equipment really does need to be protected from our harsh Aussie weather. Discover What It Takes To

BUILD YOUR IDEAL SHED Gabby & Anthony Combe, Crystal Brook with Danny from Grant Sheds

Your Farm Shed Hero! What Is A Shed? Now, that’s something to ponder. I’m sure as soon as you read it a picture comes into your mind of what a shed “looks” like, and it’s probably one of your own sheds. Am I right? But in a broader context … What Is A Shed? Think of it this way …A shed is a big, strong structure that competes, against the odds, with the weather! If you think of it, sheds only exist for two reasons 1. To protect against the weather, or 2. To protect against theft And here, we’ll talk about the 1st item. If our harsh Aussie weather wasn’t so detrimental ... If the fierce sun wasn’t so damned harmful... If gale force winds weren’t so destructive... And of course, if the rain wasn’t so (well)… WET! Then perhaps you wouldn’t need sheds. But since those awful, stormy weather conditions do occur, and because the harsh Aussie sunlight glares on your farm machinery, vehicles and equipment almost every day … the fact is … you DO NEED SHEDS.

This BIG, STRONG, COURAGEOUS Grant Sheds farm shed PROTECTS THE EXPENSIVE AND VALUABLE FARM MACHINERY for Anthony & Gabby Combe of Crystal Brook. It’s size and the layout of beams, openings and sliding doors was designed to suit the Combe’s own personal farming needs. The size is a whopping 21m x 48m x 6.4m. To fit their huge farm equipment, it has 4 x 12m wide beams. 3 are on one side of the shed for storing their large farm machinery, and 1 on the opposite (near) side to provide a drive-through section for their air seeder ,without uncoupling. The shed is sited near a road, so Anthony wanted it fully enclosed for security purposes. It has 12 x 4m wide easy-glide, bottom roll, sliding doors, with each set of 3 opening on double tracks to fully open up each 12m section. The northern (left hand) end of the shed will be their workshop to allow them to work comfortably on machinery under cover. And what does that mean? South Australia and the mallee areas of western Victoria and New South Wales have some of the worst weather conditions in the world… for farm equipment. Everything is against us here! We have seriously destructive gale force winds, hail and bucketing rain. It gets so very, very hot in the summer.

And since you do need to provide protection for your very expensive and valuable equipment (and also for your farm produce hay, grain, almonds, dried fruit, etc and your farm inputs like fertiliser, chemicals etc)…

So Grant Sheds builds STRONG, COURAGEOUS sheds that stand up against all those destructive forces so your farm machinery, vehicles and equipment remain SAFE and DON’T AGE as fast as they would without protection.

Then you would surely need a shed that is BIG, STRONG and a COURAGEOUS STRUCTURE.

Along with that we also understand your position as farmers.

One that can handle the competition against Mother Nature.

You know what…? This strong, courageous shed that has to stand up against all the odds that the weather can throw at it, it still has to work for YOU. We get that.

But Who Talks About Sheds Being “COURAGEOUS” ? Well, obviously we do! Because do you know what …? We are the best shed builders for Aussie farmers … in the world!

We know what matters to you! We understand you. We have empathy for your situation and for what you need. We know that the design and layout of your new shed has to fit with what YOU need. Our team know what questions to ask you to understand what you need the shed for and

how you want it to work. And having listened to the individuality of your situation, we are positioned to make suggestions for a shed plan that will suit YOU best. We just have a depth of wisdom about sheds, and a clarity about farm sheds in particular, that is based on a real understanding of the farming sector. This allows us to build you a shed that suits you as an individual and to build these strong, courageous sheds that stand up against all odds. Unlike a yabby whose scientific name is Cherax Destructor, because they are destructive critters in their environment… Grant Sheds should have the scientific name “Relax … Protector” because we will do all that is needed to plan a shed that will work for you AND protect your expensive farm equipment from our harsh environment.

So let us be
