1 The Grant Sheds Story

1952-2012

With all the family being raised in a country region, we recognise the importance of being friendly, helpful, honest and following through on anything we commit to. My name is Alison Halupka and together with my husband Danny we are the owners of GRANT SHEDS. It was my father Grant Telfer who started GRANT SHEDS in 1952 when he was only 20 years old. He was keen on welding and working with steel and found a market making steel framed sheds. Through his focus on supplying strong, well-made sheds and his ability to listen to and understand what farmers really wanted and needed his business grew quickly.

Many people actually remember Grant for the 5-acre Adventure Playground he built in Monash SA (here’s an older picture I found, to the right.) So many families had fun on the 200-plus pieces of playground equipment he added over the years. It was free to enter all day, every day, and had slides (including 3 that were on a 45-foot tower), more than 30 types of seesaws, flying foxes and even basic roller coasters. It attracted more than 300,000 people a year from right across SA and interstate.

Sadly it had to close in the early 1990’s because insurance companies would nolonger insure it. That was the start of the ‘litigation era’, and insurance companies saw playgrounds as high risk... or was it just that too many people were having too much fun for free?

That’s Dad to the right, proudly posing at the playground, happy as ever and renowned for his white overalls, bare feet and bike… he’s quite a character. Danny and I joined the family business about 25 years ago and Grant has taught us all about building good strong sheds and how to really listen to what our customer needs and how to give good practical advice on the best sheds for them. It’s also about the planning and the systems we put in place to make sure we can do what we say we’ll do and within the time we say we do it.

MISTAKE 2 Buying a shed from someone who doesn’t take the time to understand your needs – only to find the shed doesn’t fulfil your requirements! (e.g. Doorways or openings too small, height

3 MISTAKE The shed company only wants to sell you a kit and tells you it’s easy to find a local shed builder to build it for you. But then you find it’s almost impossible to find a shed builder to erect it... there just aren’t that many around... and the good ones are already extremely busy, often aligned to specific shed companies and with no time to even consider building another shed, especially a “cheap” brand they don’t know. They’ve been caught with those before. So you’re left with no builder or finding a ‘general’ builder who has little or no experience building with steel. Work out who you are going to get to build your shed before you buy it.

Attempting to arrange the sometimes-tricky council application process for the first time! You don’t have to go it alone.

A shed supplier worth his salt can assist you through this minefield and will provide all the technical information, drawings and engineering calculations so that council approval can be made quick and easy. Find out what help your shed supplier will give you and make sure they don’t make you wait until you’ve paid for and received the shed before giving you the technical information for you to submit to your council. Otherwise you may find you’ve paid for your shed only to find your council won’t approve it and you’re left stranded with a useless, expensive pile of scrap metal.

5 MISTAKE Getting caught out with expensive add on costs – through not getting a fully itemized written quote! This is the only way to make sure there’s no misunderstanding and you get what you want from the start. We heard a story recently from someone who bought another shed brand but wished he’d bought a ‘Grant’ shed. The other shed company had quoted him a price for the shed kit, plus an estimate of between $XX and $XXX, for the building. Even at the higher end of the estimate it meant the overall price (supply and build) was cheaper than all other quotes he’d received. But... the shed company only gave him the contact details of the independent builders after the shed kit was paid for and supplied. The customer had to contact the builders himself to arrange the building. The builders then quoted a building price thousands of dollars more than the high end of the estimate he’d previously been given! And they said this shed company does this all the time... they estimate low to win the shed sale, then leave it to the customer and builders to deal with the fallout. This customer was angry... If he’d known this before he bought the shed he’d have made a very different decision.

Good Builders: ISTAKE 6 M Finding Scenario 1: The city-based shed company you buy from has builders they can recommend but the builders don’t want to leave their city limits, so they either keep delaying when they’ll come because they’d rather do the newer more local (to them) jobs that come in after yours OR they rush your job because they just want to get home. Then when you find problems with the way they’ve built your shed, you can’t get them to return to fix it. Scenario 2: Organising your own builder only to find he won’t commit to a time, or starts and then stops and you have to waste your precious time chasing him up to finish your shed. You might pay for a shed that is never completely built and have to pay another builder to finish off the job. Machinery Sheds For storage of farm equipment and implements (e.g. tractors, trucks, grain or grape harvesters, spray equipment, tractor implements, etc.) They’re also great as farm workshops. Machinery sheds in SA are much larger than in eastern states, and they even vary in size from the east of our state to the west of our state (sheds may have openings up to 12 or 15m wide to fit the very large broad acre farm equipment used in the west).

Bulk Grain Sheds These sheds have an inside-out appearance. The corrugated iron for the walls is on the inside of the shed frame and also acts as the grain shed lining. The wall girts the wall iron is attached to are also much more closely spaced than in other sheds to give strength and support for the outward load (from the weight of grain that will be stored in the shed).

First of all, some events aren’t covered. For example, if you drive your tractor or header into the side of the shed and damage it, that might damage the structure and naturally is not guaranteed. Or Acts Of God, like if a bushfire or extreme hurricane destroys your shed, or if a plane lands on it. ... well you see out point. That wouldn’t be covered either. Over time, Colorbond colours fade in the weather (it’s natural for this to occur, so you should expect some colour fading) – that’s not covered either. Unless you have indicated your intention to use the shed in such a way before we build it (so we can design the specifications accordingly), the Guarantee will not cover such improper use. And the Guarantee doesn’t cover any damage to property in or around the shed or any personal injury.

So that means things like if your shed were to blow down in strong winds that are within the 100 year wind rating design limits, or if the doors give you trouble, or if there is structural damage caused by the wind or because our builders made an error...

... then we’ll either FIX IT for FREE or REPLACE IT for FREE if it can’t be fixed. Of course, we still advise you to insure your shed and contents, and to have your liability insurance up to date (as we’re talking about the shed structure here, and not the cost of the contents or damage that may happen to third parties).
