EDITOR’SNOTE “Courage does not always roar. More often it is the quiet voice that whispers at the end of the day ‘i will try again tomorrow.” -Mary Anne Radmacher

Decorating Tips

“The question that I get asked most from clients is do you have any great decorating tips? Of course I do after all I’m the owner and founder of The Staging Fashionista, a home staging and interior decorating business in the Washington DC Metro area. Below are some of my favorite tips that will help you decorate a space that best fits your style and personality. Interior decorating is just like fashion it’s all about personal taste and style that makes you feels good. So let’s get ready to style your home with some of my favorite tips.”

Use Color in Accessories Not your Furnishings When decorating buy furniture that is neutral in tone, like beige, tan, grey or brown. Floral prints and colored sofas go out of style quickly. So stick to neutral and add your splash of color with pillows and your accessories. This way you can change your color palette throughout the seasons more affordably by changing the accessories not the furniture! Don’t skimp on pillows Adding pillows to your sofas and beds make them luxurious inviting and colorful. Don’t skimp with just one or two add lots of pillows in different shapes and sizes that add color and warmth to your space. Color Your World When decorating it’s ok to add color. You can do this with paint, accessories, pillows, throws or artwork. Don’t be afraid to add some color to your rooms as this is what makes a space unique and it defines your individuality and your personality. For 2013 Emerald Green is the color of the year don’t be afraid to add a splash into your décor. Use Fashion trends as your inspiration Get your inspiration from fashion! See what the new trends and styles are in fashion and then relay that into your decorating. Also see what colors fashion designers are using and then incorporate that into your home decorating.

Mirror, Mirror on The Wall Mirrors are great to use in decorating. They reflect light and add sparkle to a room. If you place a mirror on a wall opposite a window it will reflect the light from the window into that area of the room. Mirrors come in all shapes, sizes and styles and are perfect for adding style and sophistication to any room. It’s in the Artwork Don’t like color on your walls? That’s ok, add color with artwork! You can add great color with artwork and it can make a big colorful statement especially on a feature wall. You can find artwork that reflects your personal taste and that fits your décor whether it is modern or traditional. Add a Rug as Your Foundation When placing furniture in a room, add a rug as your foundation. It adds color and it defines the space. Make sure that each piece of furniture is touching the rug so it doesn’t look like your furniture is floating in the room. Rugs add interest, warmth and definition to a space! Create Flow Create a nice flow throughout your home with color. For instance if you are decorating with green, blue and brown make sure that each room in your home has at least two of these colors incorporated into each room’s décor. This adds a nice flow that makes your home feel inviting and comfortable. A Perfect Fit You wouldn’t buy clothes that are too small nor too big would you? The same applies to furniture. Buy furniture that is scaled to fit your room. Don’t buy furniture that is too small or too big to fit into a room. Measure the space and then make sure to buy furniture that will fit perfectly into the space to create a comfortable room. You don’t want to overcrowd a room or make a room appear too sparse! Finding Inspiration Don’t know where to start? Get inspired by looking at magazines, online, furniture stores, boutiques, and home and garden shows. You can find many great ideas, tips and furniture ideas through these resources. The most important thing is to find inspiration and then create a room that you love. by lupus, although men and children have also been diagnosed with the disease. Over half of the women affected by lupus are Hispanics, Blacks or Asians. Once of the questions we are always asked is whether the disease is genetic. The answer is they do not know. I believe one of the problems is that the history of the disease is a little cloudy. I am sure that many of you had older relatives who suffered from arthritis. They did not look for lupus many years ago, and some of your relatives might have had lupus instead of arthritis.

Solving the cruel mystery of lupus! Before you can solve the mystery, you must know what lupus is, what it is not, whom it affects and what are its symptoms. Lupus is an autoimmune disease. What does that mean? The immune system, which normally protects the body, for some unknown reason turns on itself and begins to attack healthy organs of the body. Its cause is unknown and there is no cure to date. The problem why it is difficult to diagnose and treat is that it can affect many different systems of the body and there are many different ways it can affect people. (Lupus Q & A, Everything You Need to Know by Robert G. Lahita, M.D., PhD., and Robert H. Phillips, Ph.D- 1998). There are three types of lupus. Discoid lupus affects the skin and is identified by a rash that may appear on the face, neck or scalp. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is more severe and can cause inflammation in a number of organs. The third is called drug-induced lupus which can cause lupus-like symptoms and is similar to SLE. The good thing about drug-induced lupus is that when the drugs are discontinued, the symptoms disappear. Lupus is not contagious, and it is not cancer or Aids. It can affect the joints, similar to arthritis, and cause a rash, fever, headaches, and problems with the heart, lungs, kidneys or the brain. The symptoms vary and can affect the individual in different ways. If someone is diagnosed with lupus, it is usually found by a rheumatologist who would then work with a doctor or doctors who specialize in the heart, lungs, kidneys or the brain, depending which organs have been affected. People with lupus may experience, fatigue, headaches, fevers, joint pain or problems with the different organs affected by the disease. Being sensitive to the sun and light are also other symptoms. Women between the ages of 11 -45 are more likely to be affected

When someone has a lupus flair that means that many of their symptoms manifest themselves at the same time. The individual then feels fatigued, may have a fever, joint pain or other problems all at the same time. They are now better able to diagnosis lupus, but it takes a long time to diagnose. They have medications that can assist the lupus patient and give them some relief. A person with lupus can also help themselves by eating right, exercising and resting when ever they can. All of these self-help methods should be done under the guidance of the person’s doctor or doctors. If diagnosed as soon as possible, and with the right medications, exercise and proper eating habits, the lupus patient may have a good quality of life. You are not alone.
