ow would you define a power couple? In my opinion, a power couple is two highly successful people in their respective careers who work together as a team. They have a great impact on their community because they are role models and leaders. Also, they inspire others with their drive, dedication, and success, both individually and as a couple. They are talented enough on their own but become a powerful duo when they combine their abilities. Finally, they have a teammate mindset — a “we” instead of a “me” mentality. Some of the most integral people in Lake and Sumter counties are joined in holy matrimony. And we’re extremely excited to feature them in this month’s issue. Chances are, you likely know or have met one or more of these couples. They are living proof that

you can have a successful marriage while balancing demanding careers and philanthropic endeavors. In our other feature this month, we’re encouraging you to spread holiday cheer by shopping locally instead of driving to Orlando’s malls and outlet stores. There are plenty of unique local shops where you can buy the perfect gift for family and friends. Our staff spent numerous days combing every inch of Lake and Sumter counties to make a comprehensive gift guide that covers everything imaginable — from home décor and jewelry to specialty items and stocking stuffers. I truly hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and creates memorable moments with their loved ones. We’ll soon be putting 2023 in the rearview mirror and look forward to a fresh start in 2024. God bless and Merry Christmas! Sincerely,

Cancer and

the Holidays PAI D

P ROMOTIONAL

FEATU RE

T

he holidays can be stressful, even without cancer’s added challenges. COVID-19 and other health concerns can raise stress levels even further. Wendy Hall, LCSW, offers these ways to cope.

1

Keep things simple. The side effects from cancer and its treatment can ramp up your fatigue and lower your immunity, so focus on just one or two traditions that are special to you. If you are social distancing from friends and family, consider modifying some traditions, like visiting online rather than in person. Some websites can also let you post audio and video greetings for loved ones to enjoy.

2

Shop online. Large crowds can be stressful in the best of times. Cancer can make those crowds harder to navigate, and diseases like COVID-19, flu, and RSV can still increase infection

risk even for people without health issues. Shopping online has become the answer for many. Most stores have great customer service staff available to help. Some neighborhood businesses may now offer home delivery. Gift cards can also be bought online.

3

Love is priceless. If money is tight, heartfelt, homemade gifts and “Thinking of You” notes go a long way to let someone know they are in your thoughts. If you are social distancing, you can send a digital creation or greeting.

4

Ask for help. People will want to know how you are doing. Consider sharing that information via email or in a video greeting. You can ask a close friend to share the details if doing so directly makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are gathering in person for the holidays, asking guests to bring a dish to share can keep your work load from becoming overwhelming.

5

Learn and accept your limitations. If you visit others, be aware of the physical stress that entertaining and traveling puts on your body. Use discretion when selecting which holiday invitations to accept. If you go out of town, consider staying in a hotel instead of in a family member’s home. This may help you relax and restore your energy and give you more control over your space and time.

6

Remember the true meaning of the holidays. Finally, don’t concentrate on what may be missing or is different from past holidays. Try to focus on the present moment and enjoy your celebration in whatever form it takes. Remember what the holidays are truly about: a time for renewed friendships, being thankful, and sharing with others. We are here to help. THE HIT LIST

INTO THE SWING OF THINGS: For the past 37 years, the Lake County Swing Big Band has made a name for itself in Central Florida by expertly performing sounds from the swing band era. Hear for yourself when the band performs a live Christmas concert at 3 p.m. on Dec. 17 at Graceway Church in Leesburg, 10200 Morningside Drive. For more information, visit lcswing.com.

JOYOUS KWANZAA: Kwanzaa is a weeklong holiday honoring African culture and traditions. Kwanzaa, which falls between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1, was created by AfricanAmerican leader and activist Maulana Karenga and first celebrated in 1966. According to timeanddate.com, Kwanzaa is celebrated by people from a range of African countries and their descendants. During daily Kwanzaa celebrations, candles are lit, and libations — the name given to the ritual pouring of a drink as an offering to a god — are poured in a wooden unity cup and shared as a symbol of the unity of the family and community. Kwanzaa’s week of celebrations culminates with a feast and the exchange of gifts. A Kwanzaa ceremony may include musical performances and drumming, and women often wear brightly colored traditional clothing.

IT’S TREE TIME: Searching for the right Christmas tree can be as frustrating as searching for the perfect gift . . . unless you visit Santa’s Christmas Tree Forest in Eustis, where you can choose from three varieties of trees — sand pine, red cedar and Arizona cypress. While you’re there, enjoy a zip line, an animal zoo, horse and pony rides and tractor-pull rides. For more information, call 352.357.9863.

WIN-WIN!: With Christmas around the corner, you’ll want to shop local for those lastminute gifts on your list. Gift recipients will surely enjoy your unique and thoughtful selections, and local business owners will appreciate each sale. Whether shopping for a foodie, a pet lover, a fashionista or for items like jewelry, knick-knacks, makeup or toys, there are a multitude of shops throughout Lake, Sumter and Marion Counties with a lot to offer. Need ideas? Refer to Style’s gift guide in this issue!

FRESH AND UNIQUE: Johnson’s Village Marketplace, a neighborhood grocer that offers a unique variety of items with a focus on convenience, ambiance and freshness, is now open at 550 West Avenue in downtown Clermont. The new indoor market is a one-stop shop for foodies that features butcher-cut meats, fresh seafood, a deli, prepared foods, organically grown produce and more. Imported foods, groceries, beverages and a selection of wines and cheeses add to the charm. The outdoor space boasts a bar, a dog wash, a seating area and two Airstream campers converted into food trucks, ensuring there’s nothing else like it downtown. Visit johnsonsvillagemarketplace.com or call 352.394.3333 for more information. GET OUTDOORS: Kayaking, hiking, canoeing and fishing, oh my! Those are some of the activities that draw visitors to the 770-acre Pine Meadows Conservation Area, which features six miles of hiking trails, a dog-friendly loop trail, wetlands, pine flat woods and open water. The site is also home to 120 bird species, making it an ideal destination for birding enthusiasts. Amenities include picnic tables, a canoe and kayak launch, a gravel boat ramp and restrooms.

SOUNDS OF THE SEASON: Embrace the holiday spirit at First Presbyterian Church of Mount Dora’s Christmas Concert, scheduled for 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at the church, 222 W. 6th Avenue in Mount Dora. The event is set to feature the Chancel Choir, Jubilate Handbell Choir, and soloists performing festive holiday music. The concert is free, but donations are welcome. For more information call 352.383.4089.

BRAVO!: According to Lake County Schools, SoLa Voce, the advanced mixed choir at Lake Minneola High School, has been selected by audition to perform at the upcoming Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) Professional Development Conference scheduled for Jan. 10-13, 2024, in Tampa. This prestigious event showcases the finest musical talents in the state.

QUITTERS ARE WINNERS: Smoking is a real drag, but you can quit the habit now before your body and health go up in smoke. Tried before, but didn’t succeed? Consider joining a smoking cessation class and experiencing camaraderie with others trying to kick their smoking habit. In addition to giving and receiving support and encouragement from other quitters, classes allow you to openly discuss new ways of controlling cravings and learn measures to cope with withdrawal symptoms. To sign up for a smoking cessation class, visit tobaccofreeflorida.com.

DID YOU KNOW?: Florida’s largest channel catfish on record weighed 44.5 pounds. It was caught by angler Joe Purvis in Lake Bluff, a private lake in Mascotte, on May 19, 1985. Channel catfish are the most common type of catfish caught in Florida.

EDUCATION

Leads to Caring: Local Preserve Dedicated to Conservation PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

hen you’re blessed with something special, the natural tendency is to protect it. Fortunately for Central Florida, the board members of The Holloway Foundation are determined to do more than simply protect a magnificent piece of property. Their goal is to share this beautiful swath of Florida heritage and foster a heart for conservation in everyone who experiences it. “We want to connect children and adults to nature and foster life-long conservation values,” says founder Dr. Rufus M. Holloway, known to friends and family as Dick. Holloway was raised in Leesburg and is a 1954 graduate of Leesburg High School. He attended the University of Florida and then went on to Duke Medical School. He pursued his career as an otolaryngologist in Orlando, specializing in disorders of the ear, nose and throat. Holloway retired in 2003 and is fully dedicated to furthering the efforts of The Holloway Foundation. “The goal is to integrate education and conservation. We have been very fortunate to keep this land in the family for this length of time,” he says. “We want to further enhance

the natural habitat so that we can preserve it for the future and not have development.”

LONG HISTORY Holloway’s father, Rufus Holloway Sr., purchased the property in 1952 to run a cattle operation. The land, which now lies within the Leesburg city limits, later became Holloway Tree Farm and operated until 2017. Through the years, the Holloway family spent countless hours on the farm, riding horses, fishing, and hiking the secluded trails. The family formed the Holloway Foundation for Alternative Energy and Natural Resources in memory of Rufus Sr. Although some land was sold, the family retained 80 acres for preservation by The Holloway Foundation, as it is now known. This unique slice of wild Florida features multiple habitats on one property. There are woods with majestic 300-year-old live oaks, grass and wildflower fields, sandy uplands and three different wetlands. In addition to an abundance of native plants and trees, the property is home to a great variety of birds and four-legged wildlife, including bobcats, grey and red foxes, fox squirrels, armadillos, possums, and raccoons.

“We are not a public park. We try to keep things as natural as we can,” says Holloway, noting that they just put up a number of Eastern blue bird and wood duck boxes. “We have planted a lot of Florida native plants and flowers, including a large number of plants that provide natural food sources for birds,” he adds. “We just planted 1200 long leaf pines, which are a native Florida pine tree once used for ship building, but these won’t be harvested.” Situated in the center of the property is a 40-year-old, two-story barn made of heart pine that was harvested in Georgia in 1880. Initially, the wood was used to build a whiskey warehouse in

Kentucky’s bourbon country. When that structure was set to be demolished, Holloway stepped in. The lumber was sent south to Leesburg and gained a second life as the family used it for constructing the barn in 1983. Through the years, he and his sister, Ann Holloway Blackmon, hosted many class reunions there, prompting their Leesburg High School classmates to call it “The Reunion Barn.” Today, the barn holds some of the educational activities when guests come to the property. Programs have already featured a forester, geologist, botanist, chemist, solar expert and more. Beekeeping is also an important aspect, and the

farm has up to 100 hives on site. “The whole idea of the foundation is to balance between the land being used as a natural preserve and for the education of all ages about conservation and preservation of natural resources,” says Holloway, noting that all planned events are geared towards education. Holloway and his wife, Leslie, an educator, established the foundation in 2015. Board members include Dick’s son Michael Holloway, a physician; Dan Tatro, a realtor; Rick Newman, an attorney; Justin Low, a solar expert; Dick’s cousin Bill Barry, a businessman; Guy Colado, founder of Commerce National Bank and Trust in Winter Park; Malcolm Butler,

PhD, dean of the Cato College of Education, professor of science education, UNC Charlotte; and local teacher Dan Keeling.

EXPANDING ACTIVITIES Dan Keeling joined the foundation last fall. As Director of Education, he’s taking a hands-on approach to broadening the organization’s outdoor and conservation activities. He first learned about The Holloway Foundation after he picked up the August 2022 issue of Lake & Sumter Style. “I have an Outdoor Club I’ve sponsored at the middle school for the last six years. The goal is to involve families in outdoor activities

and get them interested in nature and conservation,” says Keeling. “When I read the article about Dr. Holloway setting up the foundation, I thought his foundation and my club were a perfect match. I called him, we set up a meeting, and things just fell into place. That article was responsible for getting me involved,” says Keeling, who joined the foundation’s board in October 2022. He explains that the goal is for the property to be like natural Florida before widespread development came to the area. The whole farm is under restoration, and this will be an ongoing process. “Nature is never ‘done,’ so that means the restoration will continue. We just had a controlled burn there as that is how many native plants and grasses regenerate,” says Keeling. He notes that the foundation is focused on the perspective of conservation striving for a balance between nature and education. For example, farm visits include guided walking tours educating guests about the natural environment and different habitats on the property. It’s vitally important to all board members that this land, which has been in the Holloway family for decades, be preserved and shared via invitationonly events. With that in mind, the property won’t become a public park in order to limit the impact on the natural environment. On October 21, the foundation hosted “Fall Fun Day at the Farm.” This was the fifth formal event held at the farm and 120 participants took part. Attendees were treated to interpretive tours and a hayride around the property with a tractor pulling the wagon. Back at the barn, they learned about the chemistry of season changes in a presentation by the Leesburg High School Environmental Science department. There was also a solar energy demonstration by board member Justin Low. Arts and crafts are always part of the fun and this event included scarecrow and pumpkin decorating with fall nature crafts made from natural items gathered on the farm.

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Dave Skorupski added to the atmosphere as guests enjoyed games and a picnic lunch under the majestic oak trees. “Area school groups are usually among the attendees, but we are not connected with the public school system,” says Holloway, noting that the foundation is open to local Scout groups and church youth groups. Children attending must be supervised by either a parent or guardian. “We don’t accept any fees and aren’t trying to make money with this,” he adds. “We don’t want to have feebased visitation; that’s why we have the foundation.”

EDUCATION LEADS TO CARING In a 1968 presentation to an assembly of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Baba Dioum, a Senegalese forestry engineer, famously quoted, “In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” Keeling says that powerful statement fully sums up the mission of The Holloway Foundation. “Education today, conservation for tomorrow” is the focus of everything the foundation does. “When people get to see and interact with an animal, like an eagle or owl, up close, they tend to care more once they understand something,” says Keeling. “So many animals are misunderstood and underappreciated because people simply don’t understand them. The more informed you become, the more you care about something.” Through his Outdoor Club, Keeling regularly takes families out on hikes and trips around Florida, and now he’s determined to have them experience the Holloways’ farm. “People have no idea how wild and beautiful this area is because they just don’t unplug and get out. We are going to change that,” he vows. “There’s a huge disconnect with nature that’s been going on for decades. There are so many physical, mental, and emotional benefits of being out in

nature, so we’re just trying to bring that back,” says Keeling. The next event on the Holloway Foundation calendar is scheduled for December 16. Attendees will be treated to a performance by Jim Sawgrass, a native Floridian of Muscogee Creek (Mvskoke) descent and a living historian of the Southeastern Native American tribes. The Audubon Birds of Prey Center in Maitland will be bringing some of their birds.

“THE GOAL IS

TO INTEGRATE EDUCATION AND CONSERVATION. WE HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO KEEP THIS LAND IN THE FAMILY FOR THIS LENGTH OF TIME.” — DR . RU F U S M . HO L L OWAY

“We try to keep the events really family focused. We have three or four annual events the foundation regularly hosts, but other events are added as requested and needed. The goal is to have at least one event or more each month,” notes Keeling. Attendance is limited due to the space required for educational programs to ensure the best learning environment. If you have a youth or family-focused group (church, Scouts, school group, or other organization), contact the foundation and an invitation-only event can be arranged. Email your request or inquiry to dankeeling@ thehollowayfoundation.org.

MOCHA & Rescued pups transform into red carpet royalty as Chewy models. STORY AND PHOTO: CINDY PETERSON

Mocha and Royal are a pair of rescue dogs who went from being strays to stealing the spotlight as dog models. Their true journey from rags to riches has led them to stardom as models for Chewy and for America’s Next Top Dog Model. In 2014, Royal was rescued from a shelter by his owner Sharon Dodsworth. Sharon’s passion for creating specialized outfits tailored just for Royal was the driving force behind her venture into making handmade dog clothes for her Etsy shop, RoyalRagsToRiches.com. Royal was a natural when it came to modeling and has won numerous competitions, including the #chasethe98 Nutri Chomps Contest, where his photo was featured on the No.98 Ford Mustang race car driven by Chase Briscoe at the Talladega Speedway in 2019. He was also a finalist in America’s Next Top Dog Model. Mocha’s story began three years ago when she was found wandering near the Ocala National Forest by a woman who took her to Sharon’s home, and who provided shelter until the owner could be located. Mocha’s owner informed Sharon

036 / L A K E A N D S U M T E R S T Y L E .C O M • D E C ' 2 3

that this wasn’t the first time the dog ran away and that she had been missing for two weeks this time. Sharon told the family she would be happy to re-home her if needed. The family decided that was in Mocha’s best interest. Mocha and Royal formed a strong bond, prompting Sharon to explore Mocha’s potential as a dog model alongside Royal. “She took to it naturally,” Sharon says. The modeling journey took off for Mocha and Royal. Both made adorable appearances in various local contests and events. Mocha was recognized as a finalist in America’s Next Top Dog Model and recently appeared in Paw Prints Magazine. Their journey reached new heights last year when they were selected as models after nailing test shots at the studio of popular online pet supply company Chewy. Both were invited to join the Chewy team as gigs became available. To date, Mocha has been featured in two commercials. As the duo continues their trot of fame, Sharon hopes to raise awareness about and inspire people to continue rescuing pets from shelters.

DAVID & ANDREA Impacting the community that embraced them. STORY: CYNTHIA MCFARLAND

≈ PHOTO: NICOLE HAMEL

When David and Andrea Colby moved to Florida seven years ago, they weren’t sorry to leave behind New England winters. Both natives of Massachusetts, David graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1991 with a management degree, while Andrea earned her bachelor’s in business communications in 1992 from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne. Having met in the Berkshires in 1997 on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend, the couple married in 2001. They are the parents of Max, 18, and Madison, 20. David and Andrea are thrilled to call Florida home. “When we moved from the Northeast, we found very quickly that the community embraced us,” recalls Andrea. “We’re really happy to be embedded in this community and to watch the growth happen.” They moved to Clermont in May 2016 after David accepted the job as president and CEO of the South Lake Chamber of Commerce. David serves on various boards, including Clermont Main Street and the Clermont Planning and Zoning Board. He also interacts with many non-profit organizations, such as New Beginnings and even participated in their Dancing Under the Stars Gala. While serving as the communications director for Montverde Academy, Andrea was recruited by Kroger Delivery to help introduce the service to Floridians. She was promoted to customer communications manager for Kroger and works from the Groveland facility managing marketing activity for all eight fulfillment centers nationwide. Hands-on involvement is important to both David and Andrea, who are committed to impacting their community in positive ways. “We show up and lend a hand at volunteer efforts like Share Day, which brings together local food pantries,” says David, noting that they recently participated in the Pig on the Pond scholarship fundraiser. Andrea is very active in the food distribution effort of Kroger’s Zero Hunger/Zero Waste action plan. When they aren’t working or volunteering, David and Andrea enjoy jet skiing on the Clermont chain of lakes, walking and biking the South Lake Trail and traveling around Florida. Family time is a priority and the couple is always on the lookout for live music opportunities.

QUENTIN & LEIGH ANN Oxford couple exemplifies power of faith, community and love. STORY: ROXANNE BROWN

Quentin and Leigh Ann Berry are a match made in heaven. The high school sweethearts turned power couple have built their lives on a foundation of love, dedication and mutual support. Their journey revolves around an enduring bond based on shared values, genuine admiration and unwavering support for each other’s individual pursuits. “I know it’s mushy, but I can’t imagine being with anyone else,” Leigh Ann says after revealing that they’ve been married for 24 years. Quentin says he’s enjoyed growing together and navigating through many chapters, including raising their children Colton and McKenzie. “We enjoy our family time, but we’ve always made time for each other, taking vacations and having our date nights. We’re meant to be together,” he adds. Quentin and Leigh Ann’s compatibility extends beyond their personal lives. They

Quentin owns Alpha Environmental Septic Services, which serves Lake, Sumter, Marion, Volusia and surrounding counties by catering to all things related to septic systems, including repairs, lift stations and more. Leigh Ann owns and operates Prominent Fox Boutique, a charming shop at Preston Place in Oxford that sells stylish women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, western wear, gifts, home décor, ladies jewelry/accessories and Christian-based products. Leigh Ann says her purpose goes above anything material. She strives to lift people up, especially other women. “Sometimes, people are their own worst critics, so I like to remind them that God doesn’t make mistakes, that they are beautiful,” Leigh Ann says. Quentin and Leigh Ann often extend help and words of hope in times of need. Their devotion to their businesses is matched only by their commitment to God and community. Leigh Ann and Quentin work hard to be good examples to their children. She says they’re confident McKenzie and Colton will be using the same playbook when it comes time for them to take over the family businesses. For now, however, they plan to continue to touch lives and use their story as a testament to the power of faith, mutual support, shared values and enduring love. Their hope is that their journey will serve as an inspiration to all those looking to build a life filled with love and success.

MARC ROBERTZ-SCHWARTZ & NANCI

Reveling in the power of communication and connection. STORY: CYNTHIA MCFARLAND

Communication is both a skill and a career for Marc Robertz-Schwartz and Nanci Schwartz. “We value being ‘connectors.’ Sometimes the power you have is to empower the people around you to want to make a difference,” says Marc. “We thrive on networking and use our ability to build relationships and to connect people through the relationships we have,” adds Nanci. Marc hails from New Jersey, while Nanci was born and raised in Miami. Both attended the University of Florida (UF) and earned degrees in telecommunications, but their paths didn’t cross until 1991 when they were working at a Jacksonville TV station. Their relationship started with a car “break-in.” Nanci had locked her keys in her car at work. Marc assured her he could retrieve them, which he did. “We started off as great friends and it blossomed from there,” smiles Nanci. The couple married in 1999. Their daughter Acadia (Cadi), 22, is currently a senior at UF. Marc is president and founder of Red Apples Media in Leesburg, a video production and marketing company. Nanci is communications lead at JLL, a global Real Estate firm. Prior to this, she had her own PR agency for 15 years. Marc is an active member of the Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce and a board member of

the Education Foundation of Lake County. He was recently appointed to the Leesburg Electric Advisory Board and has served on the LifeStream Foundation board. Marc is also the PA voice of the Leesburg High School baseball team and is known for emceeing community events, including the Leesburg Area Back-To-School Teachers Appreciation Event and Stepping Out for Education. Nanci is advisory council chair for Take Stock in Children, as well as a Take Stock student mentor for the past 10 years. She is also treasurer of the Florida Public Relations Association of Lake County chapter and has served in various leadership roles locally as well as in the statewide organization. She is a member of Altrusa International of Lake County and has served in various leadership roles in the Lake County club, as well as at the district and international level of this international service organization. Travel is a passion for the couple who visited Switzerland and Germany this summer. Closer to home, they enjoy checking out Lake County breweries.

DARRYL & SHERRI Power couple’s relationship worthy of headlines. STORY AND PHOTO: CINDY PETERSON

In the world of communications, Darryl and Sherri Owens are a true power couple, known not only for successful careers but for their enduring love story that began in journalism class at Howard University. Sherri recalls her first impression of Darryl as an older student, impeccably dressed in a sweater vest and carrying a briefcase, while most of their peers sported jeans and backpacks. She admits, “I thought he was obnoxious!” Fate, however, thought differently. The pair found themselves working at the Washington Afro-American weekly newspaper, where they solidified their connection. Sherri embarked on her career as a copy editor and page designer at the St. Petersburg Times, now known as the Tampa Bay Times, before moving to the Orlando Sentinel as a reporter. Her journey in journalism ultimately led her to corporate communications, where she excelled as an employee communications specialist for Darden Restaurants and subsequently Red Lobster. In 2015, she assumed the role of communications officer for Lake County Schools and was promoted to administrative coordinator for communications in 2021. Darryl made a name for himself as a reporter and award-winning columnist for The Orlando Sentinel during an impressive 25-year career. In 2016, he transitioned to the

role of director of communications at Beacon College, later promoted to associate vice president of communications and engagement. Darryl’s accomplishments include launching the Beacon Salon Speaker Series and the award-winning PBS TV show “A World of Difference: Embracing Neurodiversity.” Working in the same industry has allowed Darryl and Sherri to serve as each other’s sounding boards, build connections in the community and empathize with the demands of their roles. Their mutual support system strengthens their individual and collective successes. Darryl and Sherri’s secret to a happy and healthy marriage is twofold: keeping their faith at the center; and never ceasing to date each other. Darryl, in particular, is known for keeping the romance alive with creative and thoughtful date nights. Their shared love for theater, Postmodern Jukebox and board games add extra flavor to their relationship. The Owenses have two children, Kelli and Brian, and a recent addition, their granddaughter Marli Jade, born in September. With family at the heart of their lives, Darryl and Sherri continue to inspire those around them, both personally and professionally.

MARISOL & SCOTT Eustis couple rewriting script on health and wellness. STORY: ROXANNE BROWN

≈ PHOTO: NICOLE HAMEL

Scott and Marisol Starr, the epitome of a power couple, have seamlessly blended their passions for health and wellness to create a fitness haven for their community. Their journey began more than 20 years ago when they crossed paths while working for the same company. They married, became parents to daughter Camila Mojica and maintained their corporate jobs, while longing to do something to enhance the lives of others. In pondering ideas, they discovered their mutual fascination with the world of fitness. Scott, a former collegiate soccer player, dreamed of opening a gym, while Marisol aimed to guide individuals, particularly the younger generation, toward healthier lives. “We combined our two passions and created CrossFit CIC. That was 13 years ago. Then, about five years in, we changed our branding to Starr.Fit because we realized that it was not just exercise that was important, but also nutrition, understanding the importance of sleep, managing stress and incorporating more of the health and wellness aspect into it,” Scott says. Marisol explains that their goal was to create a fun, friendly and safe space where people could focus on total health, including mind, body and spirit. “That’s how this thing became bigger than us. It became a second home to our community made up of our members,” Marisol says. Today, Starr.Fit, located in downtown Eustis, offers coach-led group fitness classes tailored to individual capabilities

that go beyond traditional workout routines, addressing injuries and posture issues, hormone wellness and functional fitness. Marisol leads the Inbody program, which emphasizes the importance of personalized health and nutrition. “It’s not just about what you eat, but how you eat, shifting the focus from weight to overall health,” she says. Their comprehensive approach to health covers physical fitness, nutrition, sleep and stress management. They emphasize the “why” behind fitness routines, aiming to make health a lifelong journey that includes fun and a strong support system. “We want to help people extend their lives, using fitness as a catalyst for achieving optimal health,” Scott adds. Additionally, Marisol’s passion for educating the next generation extends to providing tools for financial success, emphasizing the connection between health, work and financial stability. “Witnessing people become healthier and happier” is the Starrs’ ultimate reward. They continue to champion well-being, one wellness class at a time, leaving an inspirational impact on the community.

n business, success is often measured by wealth, power, and influence, but for the Long family, it’s measured by something far more enduring – the strength of family bonds and a commitment to unwavering values. Steve Long, owner of Specifics Woodwork, began his woodworking business in 1990 in the Palm Beach region. His craft took him all over Florida, which is where he discovered the Lady Lake area. “There’s just something peaceful about going outside, sitting on the

porch and looking at the farm,” Steve says. Steve and his wife raised their seven children on the farm, which is also home to his wood shop. He can still recall his son, Tanner, riding his tricycle around the shop. As Steve inches closer to semiretirement, Tanner is poised to take over his father’s business, with the help of Steve’s brother, Mark. But the business isn’t the only legacy that Steve hopes to pass on. He instilled in his children the very values that have been the cornerstone of his life’s work. “If you’re going to do something, don’t just sit around and collect a pay check,” Steve says.

“Enjoy what you do and get the job done. Be extreme on everything. If you’re going to build something, build it like it was going in your own home.” D E C ' 2 3 • L A K E A N D S U M T E R S T Y L E .C O M

Steve says that these values is what has led to 80 percent of his business being repeat customers that keep coming back. For Steve’s other son, Travis Long, these invaluable lessons imparted by his father became immeasurable assets, particularly when he embarked on his own journey, founding Quality Moving Services. Growing up, Travis worked alongside his father in his custom woodworking business. As a child, he accompanied his father to job sites, absorbing not just the technical aspects, but also seeing firsthand the ethics, workmanship, and attention to detail that defined his father’s craftsmanship. The lessons Travis learned during those early days laid the foundation for his future endeavors, instilling in him the values of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence that continue to guide him today. “Me and woodworking didn’t really get along,” Travis said as he laughed. “I was diagnosed with ADHD and kept trying to do 10 different things at once. But the business ethics he taught me are really what he’s passed on. Everything is done with a handshake and building a quality reputation in the community.” It was no surprise to Steve, who knew his son was destined to do great things. “I always knew he was going to be something,” Steve says. “All he had to do was direct that energy into something he wanted to do. I couldn’t be prouder of all my kids.” These lessons became the guiding force behind Quality Moving Services, as Travis ventured into the moving

industry at the age of 21. His commitment to running the business with the same values instilled in him by his father has not only set Quality Moving Services apart but also earned it a reputation for excellence. The company’s commitment to community involvement, its practice of operating without deposits, and its focus on top-of-theline equipment showcase its dedication to providing a stress-free moving experience. Travis’s brother, Turner “Junior” Long, plays an integral role in the company as well, demonstrating that the bonds of this family extend beyond blood and into the workforce.

“Family is everything,” Travis says. “I now have four boys and a step daughter with an amazing fiancé, Kaleigh, and it’s what gets me up every morning. To be able to pass down everything my father has taught me means everything to me.” While Quality Moving Services and Specifics Woodwork operate in different industries, they share a common thread—their commitment to family values in business. As the Long family continues to unite in their entrepreneurial pursuits, the community can enjoy the fruits of these time-honored core values that have been passed down through the generations.

ABOU T SPECIFICS WOODWORK : Specifics Woodwork has become known for high-quality woodworking projects and a dedication to customer satisfaction. One of the key components is the quality of materials used. Unlike mass-produced alternatives found in big box stores, Specifics Woodwork uses top-tier materials for every project. Steve understands that quality materials are essential for lasting and aesthetically pleasing results. While these materials may come at a slightly higher cost, they offer exceptional value in the long run, ensuring that every creation stands the test of time. Moreover, choosing custom woodworking means customers get precisely what they want because of the personalized service they receive. The process begins with a consultation,

044 / L A K E A N D S U M T E R S T Y L E .C O M • D E C ' 2 3

where project requirements are discussed. Specifics Woodwork takes precise measurements and provides rough drawings to help customers visualize their projects. Detailed shop drawings are then created to ensure that every aspect of the project aligns with the customer’s vision. The pillar of Specifics Woodwork’s approach is its hands-on, collaborative process. Customers can make changes, add or subtract features, and, once satisfied, the team begins crafting to exact specifications. This level of involvement ensures that every piece created by Specifics Woodwork is unique and handcrafted with care by experienced woodworkers—true artisans who are considered by many as a dying breed.

The commitment to quality and craftsmanship is further evidenced by the active involvement of family members within the business. Steve Long’s son, Tanner, and brother, Mark, play crucial roles, contributing their expertise and passion to every project. The sense of family extends beyond blood ties and forms the foundation of the company’s culture.

Fun is His Gig Life on stage comes naturally to Scooter the DJ. STORY: CYNTHIA MCFARLAND

orkplace statistics reveal that the average person has 10 to 15 career changes before retirement. Michael “Scooter” Miller has no intention of being “average” and is having a blast bucking those stats. The Lady Lake resident didn’t set out to be a DJ, but he makes a living playing tunes, revving up crowds, and getting people to dance. Born at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama in 1960, he earned his nickname as a quick-crawling baby. He’s been “Scooter” ever since. During his dad’s military career, the family lived in several states, but most of Scooter’s childhood was spent in Maryland. He was a recreation major at Frostburg State University in Maryland when his fraternity planned a huge party and told Scooter he’d be the DJ. Following that night in January 1980, Scooter started getting DJ requests and unexpectedly found himself in business. His last semester before graduating in 1982, he scored a Disney internship through their college program. “I was a swimmer, so they paid me and gave me college credit to be a lifeguard at Disney. I’d lifeguard, get a tan, and DJ on the side,” says Scooter. After the internship, he accepted an entry management job there while

≈ PHOTO: NICOLE HAMEL

continuing his DJ gigs. Three years later, when offered a Disney management position, he realized he could make more DJing in one night than all week as a manager. From then on, he worked solely as a DJ. If anyone was meant for this career, it’s Scooter. From his over-the-top energy and clever one-liners to his quirky hats, he has no problem being the star of the show. “I was voted ‘most humorous’ in high school, but never thought this would be my full-time job,” he admits. He played his first party in The Villages in 1998, which led to playing the Town Square at Spanish Springs. Now he plays each square once a month and performs in The Villages about five times every month. He and his wife Melissa play golf and enjoy RVing. “A lot of the Villagers have us do their kids’ weddings all over the country,” says Scooter, 63. “We take our RV, load up all the gear and make it more fun than it should be!” Scooter credits his faith for where he is today. “I follow God’s plan. It changed my life,” he says. “I’m so blessed. I love what I do and get to have fun for a living.”

Helping young people discover, pursue and flourish in their creativity is the mission behind VMAX for One Community, Inc. “We understand creative arts come in all forms and fashions,” says Vonda Parker, who co-founded the 501 (c) (3) organization with husband Max in 2017. “Max and I realized there is a different type of creative arts in every person,” notes Vonda. “The vision of this organization is to serve and offer mentoring and education classes through our creative arts programs. Our goal is to assist each student with an ideal way of developing a form of expressing themselves through the Art of Fashion Creative Arts.”

“Creative arts come in all forms, gifts and talents, so the program is open to anyone with a creative mindset,” says Vonda. And that includes youth with intellectual developmental disabilities. The two-year Art of Fashion program started in 2018 and is open to male and female students ages 5 to 30. Each six-month semester runs from October to June. Classes are held in the dance studio at Lake Square Mall. Classes are offered in three categories: basic, intermediate/ advanced, and professional. As students graduate one level, they move on to the next. Students learn runway modeling, fashion design and retail visual merchandising, swimwear design and character (acting) from industry professionals referred to as “coaches.”

VMAX hits close to home for the Parkers. Vonda is the owner of Bella Faire, an event and wedding planning business in Lake County. With a background in marketing and outreach, she has over two decades of experience in property management and event/ wedding planning. She served as an advisory board member for Sanford-Brown College in Florida (formerly known as the International Academy of Design and Technology). Max spent 32 years in Florida law enforcement, starting with the Tampa Police Department. He retired

Classes are kept small to enhance the learning experience – no more than 25 students per semester. The program is funded by donations, enrollment fees and a grant from the City of Leesburg. “It’s an educational mentoring program for the creative arts and fashion industry,” explains Vonda. In addition to learning about fashion, students gain confidence, self-esteem, discipline and selfrespect. They also develop time management, etiquette, grooming and personal skills as they explore their inner creativity. This year, the youngest student is 5 and the oldest is 22. “It doesn’t matter their age, some of the young ones can progress to the professional level. This year, we’re featuring a 10-year-old fashion designer at the 12th Annual Fashion

as the Deputy Chief of the Leesburg Police Department in January 2017. He was inducted into the Florida State Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009 and retired as a world-class professional boxing referee in 2012. The Parkers have always had a passion to help youth. VMAX combines that with Vonda’s expertise in the fashion world. “Not all youth are into sports or art, but we still need to tap into their creativity. We know fashion can bring this out of some young people,” says Vonda. That’s where VMAX comes into play.

Runway Showcase in December who is traveling around the world,” notes Vonda. “We’ve seen shy students turn into fashion kings and queens. Max and I pride ourselves on how they progress in the program. Seeing them transform from a shy child to a bright butterfly on the runway is amazing,” she adds. “By the end of the two-year program, we help them get to where they want to be, whether that is working in print ad modeling or design, or whatever aspect of the fashion world they want to go. We start marketing their profile for them,” says Vonda. “We also do a traveling runway show each year with students from the program,” she adds. The traveling runway shows were staged in Augusta, Georgia and New Orleans.

17.5 WOODED ACRES of direct lakefront property on the pristine Lake Deaton. This is a rare opportunity to purchase this large of a parcel directly on an approximately 500 acre Lake. This offering is for two parcels, Sumter County ID: G23-050 and G23-022, currently zoned RR5 within Sumter County. The adjacent property is zoned R2M, so one may assume the same zoning could be assigned to these two parcels. Upon rezoning, the property could yield seven lakefront lots at almost 80’ wide, then with roads and drainage, the remaining land could possibly be divided into 18 interior one half acre lots, see concept site plan in listing, this is a concept only and has not been approved. Imagine the potential that this type of development could have with its close proximity to hospitals, medical plazas, shopping, The Villages, and so much more. This could be the next exclusive address. Or, it may be possible to seek proper zoning for a lakefront RV park, use your imagination and take advantage of this offering. There is an old mobile home, barn, and well on site, but the land is the value. All information provided is assumed to be accurate but must be confirmed by the buyer. MLS# G5065102 // $2,400,000. REVIEW

Savor the fusion New Leesburg restaurant promises to delight every tastebud and leave you craving more. STORY: ROXANNE BROWN ≈ PHOTOS: NICOLE HAMEL

awachi Sushi & Bar is a newly opened culinary gem in the heart of Leesburg that offers an explosion of flavors at affordable prices in the most beautiful of settings. Owners Anna Hu and husband Mason Ma have crafted a tastebud tantalizing menu featuring a blend of traditional Japanese cuisine with a California twist. Their journey to establish Kawachi was fueled by a desire to fill a gap locally, providing an authentic fusion experience that caters to a diverse palate. “There are not many good Japanese places around here with the selection of sushi and so many specialty items like we have,” Anna says.

Since opening on August 25 (originally as Woochi Japanese Fusion & Bar), Kawachi’s innovative creations and dedication to quality have garnered a warm reception from local food enthusiasts. Highlights include a huge variety of sushi and hibachi options, along with deep fried tempura rolls, sashimi and specialty rolls with catchy names and an array of interesting fillings. Larger sushi orders perfect for groups come in an Instagram-worthy wooden boat called a “Love Boat.” Anna and Mason brought a wealth of culinary expertise from Los Angeles to Florida. “We create our own menu, and my husband is the mastermind behind all our dishes. We make everything fresh daily, including our wasabi, yum yum, ginger, mango and other sauces,” Anna says, adding that every element of a dish from preparing it to plating it is carefully crafted to ensure a sensational dining experience. Additionally, Kawachi’s menu has been expanded to include savory bento boxes, additional appetizers, soups,

salads, poke bowls, plentiful vegan options and many Thai food dishes. Customers can even tailor their sushi experience by mixing and matching, as well as creating their own rolls. “As long as we have the ingredients in our kitchen, we can make it,” Anna explains. With so much delicious food, you’d expect something special to wash it down, and Kawachi’s bar menu rivals its food menu when it comes to vastness. Draft, domestic, and imported beers, along with the typical spirits and drinks are available, along with many flavors of sake and soju from Japan, refreshing plum wines being and delicious sounding uncorked, poured specialty cocktails. into a couple of glasses, and set on alongofwith theRecently, table in I,front us. HIGH ON LIFE

After sustaining great loss, Lighthouse Point Bar and Grille mixologist looks forward to bright future. STORY: GINA HORAN

grew up on the West Coast, so earthquakes and wildfires were part of the scenery. Fortunately, I eluded these terrifying disasters, but close friends lost everything in the North California wildfires of 2017. Homes, restaurants and wineries all went up in flames in a matter of days. When I moved to the land of wind and rain, I pictured everyone getting in their canoes at the slightest trickle. My mom reassured me that Central Florida was pretty safe, as we live on relatively high ground. Coastal dwellers like Casey Leader, however, weren’t so lucky last year when Ian demolished both her home and job.

≈ PHOTO: NICOLE HAMEL

“We were living in Cape Coral and working on Sanibel Island when Ian hit,” says 33-year-old Casey. “We’d been through red tides, COVID and even other hurricanes, but nothing prepared us for this,” she says. For months in 2022, Casey and husband Daniel, 45, were preparing for a much anticipated 10-day road trip to Illinois, which coincided with the storm. They left daughter Julia and their four dogs with motherin-law Jody. They were already on the road when the storm shifted. “It was supposed to hit further up towards Tampa on a Tuesday, so we weren’t really worried when we left on the previous Friday,” she says. By the time they turned around and headed home, the

rest of the family had evacuated to Miami and close friends stayed on the island until air lifted to safety. They lost everything. “Our furniture was soaked in seawater, the $1,500 worth of freezer food was gone, and there were pine and palm trees all over our roof and yard,” she says. Jobless and homeless, they moved to Marion Oaks after living in her mom’s vacation rental for two weeks. Now that she tends bar at a place called Lighthouse Point, it could be a sign of good things to come. “Daniel is starting a handyman service and Julia is in the first grade here in The Villages®,” she says. “We had a great life, but we are very happy to be here together on higher ground.”

Giving Back BitebyBite Locally-owned restaurants give back year-round to community. STORY: CYNTHIA MCFARLAND

he holidays may inspire giving, but one Central Florida family makes it a point to help local charities year-round. Joseph, David and George Suleiman, owners of several popular restaurants in Lake and Sumter counties, have donated approximately $1 million to local charities since coming to The Villages. It’s one thing to run a successful business, but the Suleiman family defines success by giving back and positively impacting the community they serve. “Our plan has always been to help. We sleep better when we know we’re helping a charity and running the business at the same time,” Joseph says. “Being part of the community and charities is a big part of our business. We’ve grown up with a strong family culture and been taught to give back. We can’t do it without the Man Upstairs, so we want to make sure we’re always giving back.”

Helping Others Joseph, David, and George worked in the restaurant industry in their native New York before launching their Florida business pursuits in Tampa and Lakeland. Starting with Johnny Rockets and Taco Bell, they owned franchises before branching out into independent restaurants. The family currently owns Legacy Restaurant at the Nancy Lopez Country Club, Legacy Bar and Grill, Havana Country Club, Prima Italian Steakhouse, and The Angler’s Club. “Once we came to The Villages in 2009, we knew it was home, and we’re fully dedicated to being here,” Joseph stated. Their mission to serve and help others began a decade ago with their first donation to Operation Shoebox, a charity that benefits deployed members of the military. “We’ve always been big on supporting our country. We have

family in the military, so that has encouraged us to donate to military causes,” Joseph says. “Over time we’ve become so close to the guests who come in. They’re not just customers; they’re family. Getting to know them is how we’ve learned about many who are military veterans.” Joseph notes that Knights of Columbus has helped coordinate many of the local charities through the church the Suleimans attend.

DinetoDonate The Suleiman family came up with an innovative way to bring them close to their restaurant patrons and make a difference through local charities. They call it “Dine to Donate,” a fun way to enjoy a meal out while contributing to a cause. During Dine to Donate events, customers interested in participating in the fundraiser simply write the charity’s name on their bill. The Suleiman family then donates 20

percent of the food bill total to the organization. At the end of the day, the restaurant matches donations and sends a check to the featured charity. In addition to hosting fundraisers at their restaurants, the Suleiman family donates gift cards to local charities dedicated to helping children and veterans, as well as providing schools with education materials. Recently, their charitable efforts focused on child/human trafficking when they donated to Operation Underground Railroad,

which was featured in the movie “Sound of Freedom.” “At our most recent fundraiser for Operation Underground Railroad we were able to raise about $7,500 in donations, which we matched,” Joseph says. “We match most fundraisers with at least $500 additional.” Beginning in late October and into November, the Suleiman family held a Thanksgiving food drive in all their restaurants to collect non-perishable food items. Donors received $10 vouchers for dining at Prima, Legacy, or Havana.

At least 300 meals were donated to Wildwood elementary, middle and high schools. Additional meals were donated to Kids Central and area families in need. Canned food donations were given to the Wildwood Food Pantry. The Suleiman family also made a $500 donation towards the food drive. “For Christmas we will be accepting toy donations for Kids Central at each of our restaurant locations and giving a $10 voucher good on your next visit,” Joseph says.

R E F L E C T I N G Lake Glass & Mirror celebrates 40 years of crafting community and embracing innovation. PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

ake Glass and Mirror has not just weathered the test of time; it has thrived and evolved over 40 years, thanks to the dedicated efforts of three generations. The legacy began in 1983 when Richard Boliek and his wife, Glenda, purchased the company, then a modest establishment that had been a part of the community for 25 years. His vision was rooted in his experience with larger subcontracting companies, believing that Lake Glass & Mirror could ascend to similar heights. Since then, it has, and all because of the simple, yet profound values he instilled from the beginning. “Our customers are very important to us, they’re one of the most important parts of our business, and our goal is to make sure they’re always happy,” Richard says. “The old adage of ‘the customer is always right,’ we live by that policy.” Fast forward to today and Richard still plays a vital role in the company’s affairs. He’s initiated the passing of the torch to his son and grandson, but he continues to lend his expertise, ensuring that the principles he built Lake Glass’ foundation on are upheld. “That we are here after all these years is a true testament to the quality of work we provide, but it’s also thanks to our customers and their belief and trust in us,” Richard says. “We appreciate their loyalty, and we look forward to provide them the best service possible well into the future.”

“The integrity of Lake Glass & Mirror is based on its solid foundation and our commitment to doing things right.” —BERT BOLIEK

Richard’s son, Bert Boliek joined the company during his high school years, working part-time, taking in all the intricacies of the glass business. His return in 1992 after exploring other paths, marked a crucial turning point, and today, as Lake Glass’ general manager, Bert has contributed significantly to the company’s growth. “We were in the right place at the right time, we never lost sight of our mission and the company started to grow,” Bert adds. Bert says although he and his dad are different in their approaches, they complement each other. Richard’s meticulous attention to detail and focus on the day-to-day workings of the company ensured a strong foundation. Bert, on the other hand, brought a broader vision, steering the company toward growth and expansion. Together, they have seen Lake Glass transform from a small venture to a robust business with a workforce of over 30 employees that take care of residential and commercial jobs ranging from the installation of shower doors and mirrors to high profile jobs for universities and hospitals throughout the state. “We’re not here to get rich quick, we’re here to serve a community for the long run,” Bert says. “We have a wonderful group of people that work here and come in every day to fight the good fight.” In the spirit of continuing the family’s legacy, Bert’s son, Zac represents the third generation of Lake Glass. Having joined the company more than a year ago, Zac has embarked on a journey to absorb every facet of the business, much like his dad did when he came on board. As a junior estimator, Zac is tasked with commercial estimation, a role that demands precision and foresight. Bert acknowledges the pressure that comes with being the third generation but is confident in their overall vision. “My main goal here, throughout the future, is going to be bringing my knowledge of technology and technology

systems into the forefront. I want to be the guys that go out there with the iPads, with the augmented reality view,” says Zac. Zac says he envisions Lake Glass as a technologically advanced company, embracing innovations to stay ahead in the industry. Zac, with his passion for technology, aims to integrate modern systems that enhance efficiency and offer clients a seamless experience. With that, the dynamic between the generations showcases a delicate balance between preserving the core values and adapting to the evolving landscape of the industry. As Lake Glass reflects on four decades of service to the community, the Boliek family remains dedicated to their values and committed to shaping the company’s future. With the torch passing to the third generation, Lake Glass is set to continue its legacy as a pillar in the glass, mirror and installation industry for years to come. “The integrity of Lake Glass & Mirror is based on its solid foundation and our commitment to doing things right,” Bert says.

FINAL THOUGHT

REMEMB R AN CE

Farewell, friends Here’s my final Final Thought. STORY: JAMES COMBS

aying goodbye is never easy. But that’s what I’m doing after 15 marvelous years at Akers Media Group. Unfortunately, deteriorating health led me to resign. My eternal thanks to Doug and Kendra Akers, who hired me to become the company’s full-time writer when they launched a new publication in 2008. It has been an awesome ride. That said, I don’t want this column to be a pity party or a sob story. Instead, I’m going to share some of my favorite memories:

beautifully designed cookies to be photographed for an article. One Akers employee couldn’t resist and gobbled the cookies down before Fred Lopez could photograph them. I plead the Fifth. BOUNCING BALLS.

Back in 2015, Editor Gary Corsair had an electronic arcade basketball hoop in his office. We had some very fierce competitions. Then again, what else would you expect between a Kentuckian and Hoosier? Between games, we found time to write. A FLIGHT TO REMEMBER.

GETTING OUR FEET WET.

Before the inaugural issue of Healthy Living was printed, we took a photo of our staff standing in the Leesburg City Hall fountain. One co-worker jokingly said, “James, we should get a photo of you doing a running cannonball.” THE UNFORGETTABLE AKERS COOKIE CAPER MYSTERY.

The now-defunct Bloom’s in downtown Leesburg prepared

I was the sole reporter on The Villages Honor Flight’s inaugural trip to Washington, D.C. in May 2012 so veterans could visit various war monuments. Seeing the look on the faces of the World War II vets that day was priceless. STAR-STUDDED INTERVIEWS.

Over these 15 years, I have interviewed celebrities and athletes such as country music singer John

Anderson, comedian Bill Engvall, television personality Dr. Drew Pinsky, and former UF quarterback Danny Wuerffel. THE MIRACLE CHILD.

Jaxon Buell, who was born in 2014 with a brain one-fifth of normal size, was expected to die in his mother’s womb. Instead, he defied all odds and lived to be 5. I wanted his story to be perfect and spent hours revising it. THEIR LOSS WAS MY GAIN.

I had the opportunity to chronicle the weight-loss efforts of B.E. Thompson and Traci Oliver. It was a joy to watch both transform from fat and plump to trim and slim. WORKING WITH A ROX STAR.

My co-worker Roxanne Brown is one of the kindest and sweetest people I’ve ever met. She was a true friend to me as I dealt with several health problems during the past few years. I leave knowing the Editorial Department will be in good hands under her leadership.

Hey, readers! Is there a particular subject that you would like us to write a commentary about? Tell us, via email, at editorial@akersmediagroup.com.
