Achieving Greatness in 2018

Even if you don't believe that New Year’s resolutions work, having New Years goals in 2018 might help you achieve them. Goals and resolutions are essentially the same thing. You want to get a fresh start on a new year, so set some goals and call them resolutions. I make resolutions in both my personal and professional life. And, I make them achievable so that I can feel good about reaching them at the end of the year. (I don't try to grow 2,000 percent in 12 months!) I can’t expect goals to happen magically so I include action items to help me reach my goals. Here are some resolutions you can tailor to fit your own business goals, with suggested action items to help you achieve them.

1. Increase sales in 2018 by X percent When you make resolutions, set concrete goals. If you simply say you want to increase sales, even a $5 increase over the year would qualify you as having achieved the goal. But you really want to increase sales, right? Set a number that’s feasible. Look at the last few years of sales and aim for just a bit more growth (The economy will likely allow for a little extra reach in your numbers this year). Insights, Inspiration and Connections to Help You Get Business Done

Sample action items: 

Increase marketing budget in social media by X.

Book X more speaking engagements in 2018.

Increase prices by Y.

2. Market my business better through social media and content I suspect this should be on many business’ list this year. If you’ve seen a little success with social media and content marketing, it’s time to step it up.

Sample action items: 

Write three blog posts a week on the company blog.

Increase Twitter activity to daily.

Add 50 new social media contacts per week.

3. Become known as the expert in my field

3

If you work on personal branding, people have to know your name for it to be successful. The more places you appear, the more people get to know you through your knowledge. Dedicate 2018 to becoming the expert in your industry.

Sample action items: 

Book one speaking engagement per month.

Guest post on two other blogs each month.

Ramp up social media interaction to X times daily.

4. Be more productive You can tailor this one completely. Last year, I resolved to move to Google Docs. I did, and that has meant exponential productivity for me. Look at tools that help you share documents, monitor time spent on social sites and in general, operate more efficiently. Pick a few and resolve to fully implement them in 2018.

Sample action items: 

Get staff to use Google Docs 100 percent.

Use Dropbox to share files with clients.

Track time spent on client projects with Basecamp .

5. Delegate X percent of my work If you’re like me, you have trouble delegating. Sometimes it just seems easier to do it yourself, right? I recently offloaded a large project onto the shoulders of a very competent employee. It has made a huge difference. If you’re bogged down in tasks rather than working on the bigger picture for your business, you’ll never achieve growth.

Sample action items: 

Create guidelines to train staff on one project a month.

Hold training sessions each quarter on one skill set.

Hire an assistant to take on tasks like e-mail and phone.

I encourage you to keep your list of resolutions handy so you can look at them throughout the year. And as soon as you create your list of action items, assign them to yourself or an employee. Put them on your calendar so you actually remember to do them. Happy New Year!

Hello, I First wish to Everyone a Happy and Prosperous 2018. Whether you realize it or not it is the Beginning of truly “Making a SHIFT in your NEW LIFE. My mission to reignite the passion in business owners, entrepreneurs and those who dare to DREAM as well as anyone who has been TOLD.. “xxx is IMPOSSIBLE” or “THAT WILL NOT WORK”. Let me ask you a few questions. Are you looking to make DRASTIC changes in your life? Do you NEED help with making a SHIFT IN YOUR LIFE starting TODAY? Is your business, idea, and or project… NOT in a place where you would like it to be? Have you reached a turning point? Are YOU… OR someone you know OVERWHELMED with your THEIR circumstances? As a Master Connector, my core Objective is to help you to be Connected to..Build Networks for, as well as EXPAND Your Possibilities with our SOLUTIONS and Resources. You will find just a few of them HERE.One may ask “WHY ME.OR WHAT NOW… The reason for this is simple. For far too long, many people have lost their way. When we were younger, we believed ALL things were possible but as we got Older, oftentimes or not we were discouraged or misunderstood information from those around us and even within ourselves. In fact here is a snippet from a March 23, 2009, article by John C. Maxwell that says it all and has a HUGE impact on many today. “Most people I know have a dream. In fact, I’ve asked hundreds, if not thousands, of people about their dream. Some willingly describe it with great detail and enthusiasm. Others are reluctant to talk about it. They seem embarrassed to say it out loud. These people have never tested their dream. They don’t know if others will laugh at them. They’re not sure if they are aiming too high or too low. They don’t know if their dream is something they can really achieve or if they’re destined to fail. If you’ve given up hope, lost sight of your dream or never connected with something that you think is worth dreaming and working toward, perhaps it would help you to learn about the five most common reasons why people have trouble identifying their dream: Some People have been discouraged from dreaming by others Many people have had their dreams knocked right out of them! The world is filled with dream crushers and idea killers. Some People Are Hindered by Past Disappointments and Hurts Disappointment is the gap that exists between expectation and reality. All of us have encountered that gap. When something goes wrong, we say, “I’ll never do that again!” What a mistake, especially when it comes to our dreams! Failure is the price we must pay to achieve success.” Take ACTION today by Reviewing our Resources and if so inclined take ACTION and order today. In closing, we business owners, entrepreneurs, and project creators have been drilled into us the same mantra..People do business with people they know like and trust.Allow me to share a little about me below:

LEAP OF FAITH

BY CLAUDETTE WILLIAMS I was never a risk taker. Because I suffer from OCD everything has to line up correctly. I was in a job I hated and was making less than my qualification and experience. The only reason I stayed there that long is because I could do what I wanted and I had the flexibility to be in Ashanti’s life since I didn’t have family here to help me out. So I stayed 3 years in this miserable job I would get asthma attack , my allergies were so bad, my fibromyalgia would flare up everyday. I knew I had to leave this job I several other job offers but they didn’t line up with me being a single parent and my baby’s activities. When day I was driving to work I started to cry I said God this is not the life I dream off, when did things suddenly changed? I married my childhood sweetheart, I had an awesome career, I

How To Handle Darkness By John Telman We get up each day with darkness surrounding us. It's evil and sin of great proportions that you might be tempted to go back to bed. Depending upon the time of year or when you wake up, you will often be faced with another kind of darkness. Where I grew up, during the winter, the sun would not rise for at least a couple of hours after I woke. Shortened days and the lack of sun has been proven to be a cause of psychological and physical problems. In fact, some college's will give a week off in February because a lack of sunshine causes depression and even suicidal thoughts. Vitamin D deficiency is also due to a lack of sunshine. I remember feeling the frustration of darkness and longed for the spring when the sun would lengthen the day. Then some years later, we lived in Singapore which is near the equator. The sun rises and sets consistently within a few minutes. Days are from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. In a more dangerous way, darkness surrounds us. Evil is described in scripture as darkness and those who choose to sin are said to walk in darkness (Psalm 82:5; Proverbs 2:13; John 3:19; Romans 13:12). In fact, often the works of evil are done in darkness to hide sinful acts. It's also common to describe someone as being “dark” denoting a gloomy, depressive and possibly a dangerous person. Darkness is where injuries happen. I have bruised many toes trying to walk in a dark room but when I reach for the light, I can finally see where objects are in my path. Darkness is more than a time of stopping for rest. Many who work at night are surrounded by darkness and sleep during the day. I too worked night shifts and found them to be stressful both physically and mentally. The good news is that no matter how foreboding darkness may be the sun always seems to eventually light the day. Clouds may block out the warmth and beauty of the sun but only temporarily. In contrast to the darkness, God is described in scripture as light. Jesus called himself the light of the world (John 8:12). The Light of the World does not condemn but brings understanding. All of us have made choices to sin and turn our backs on the Creator but he reaches out in love. No one can hide from his blinding knowledge of our waywardness. He also knows everything about us and is equipped to shed light on all that concerns us. Like Job, we also have questions for God. Job lost his family, his wealth and his health. All of us experience pain and loss (darkness). Job did too and he didn't understand so he had questions for God. In chapters 38-41 God answers Job with a description of who he is. God did not defend himself by saying Satan asked to test Job. Instead God shed light on who he is. It's so complete and overwhelming that Job said, I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. The Hebrew word for “sees” is raah, which means that Job understood. He had an aha moment! We may not understand why things happen but God knows. He is all-knowing, all -powerful and is loving, so we can fully trust him when life hits us between the eyes. None of us will walk into a room and curse the darkness and say things like “wow is it ever dark in here”. We will simply flip a switch. If we can apply this metaphor to life in general, flipping the switch is acknowledging God and exalting him right in the middle of trouble. The best way to rid darkness in our lives is to allow the light of the world to make darkness run. When you switch on the light there is no opposition. The darkness cannot resist. It leaves and so does evil and trouble when we invite Jesus Christ into our darkness. So when confronted with darkness of many kinds we respond by turning our attention to the light of the world. We don't focus our attention on the darkness. Rather, we begin to worship the one who made the sun!

COAST TO COAST BUSINESS NETWORK | Issue #

11

As a pastor, I have counselled many people who were facing darkness. Sickness, threats and problems of all manner dropped a cloud of darkness over their lives. Instead of focusing on the darkness together we focused on the light of the world, Jesus Christ. It is truly amazing to see people come out of the darkness into his glorious light! It's also a good approach to not give attention to the darkness by dwelling on it. We can enjoy the light as we face it and turn our backs on the darkness. In a prophecy about the coming of Jesus Christ, Isaiah wrote, “the people who walk in darkness will see a great light” (Isaiah 9:2). To know God, we look at Jesus. He's the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. (Hebrews 1:3) Saul of Tarsus was on his way to Damascus. He had ruthlessly targeted followers of Jesus. Suddenly a “light” from heaven flashed around him; and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul why are you persecuting Me? And he said, who are you Lord? And He said, I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.” (Acts 9:3-5) Saul is also called Paul in scripture and was changed into a preacher of Jesus Christ. Years later, he wrote from a Roman prison, I count all things to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them rubbish so that I may gain Christ. (Philippians 3:8) Paul knew that following the Light of the World was far greater than anything else. In his letter to the Colossian church, Paul wrote that God rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13, 14) Focusing on the darkness is fruitless. When darkness seems to envelop your life, call upon the light of the world and walk in the knowledge that he will light your way as your eyes are fixed on him. Constantly we can know the warmth and benefits of the Son by talking to him and by surrendering our lives to him.

Top 10 Home Based Business Ideas for 2018

By Daniel Rowland

Dog Walking Another in-demand service in the pet industry is dog walking. Consider this opportunity if you enjoy working with dogs, know how to handle them, and are ready for an outdoor occupation. As with many businesses, it’ll take some time to build a solid clientele and earn a steady income. Fortunately, dog walking requires little startup capital. Some of your biggest expenses will be legal advice and insurance. Also, find out if you need any special licensing. Think about offering extra services, such as dog running and daycare. Finally, provide stellar service, because word-of-mouth will be your best marketing tool.

Carpet Cleaning Service A variation on cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning services are especially recession-resistant. Few people are willing to let their carpets get dirty, and even fewer have the equipment or skills to clean their own carpets. That’s where you come in. First, make sure you have the experience. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restorationoffers certification courses. Depending on the types of services you’re going to offer, you’ll need a range of equipment and supplies. If you’re low on startup capital, consider buying used equipment in the beginning, as well as purchasing a portable extractor to clean carpets instead of a truck-mounted unit, which can be costly.

COAST TO COAST BUSINESS NETWORK | Issue #

13

Cleaning Service Cleaning services are particularly recession-proof. Both residential and commercial cleaning operations can easily be run from home, but which you decide to start may depend on your resources. Commercial cleaning, for example, often requires commercial equipment, as well as a staff to clean big spaces. If you have less startup capital and are thinking of a solo operation, cleaning homes and smaller offices will be your best bet. Whichever you choose, be sure to use simple yet effective marketing, such as fliers, ads on your vehicle, and, of course, word-of-mouth. And before you even so much as pull out a duster, find out if there are any regulations you need to follow, including licensing, and look into getting liability insurance.

Craft Business In a world of mass-produced junk, shoppers feel good about buying handmade, one-of-a-kind items. Turn your creativity and talent into a business by selling jewelry, ceramics, unique décor, purses, metalwork — the sky’s the limit! You can sell your crafts on your own website or on sites such as Etsy, and at craft fairs and local events. Some items sell better than others, so do your research. Look on eBay and crafters’ sites, and check out home shopping channels, such as HSN or QVC, to see what types of crafts are selling. Next, think about how much it will cost you to make each product, in time, materials, and other overhead. Make sure you charge a high enough price to make a profit.

Concierge Service If you have energy, strong organizational skills, and, most important, a talent for customer service, consider starting a concierge service. The overhead is low, and the potential for profits is especially great if you live in an area with an upscale or corporate client base. You’ll also find success offering niche services, such as catering to the senior market, organizing, caring for pets, and assisting busy parents. Once you’ve decided on your market, think about pricing, advertising, and how you’ll run your service on a day-to-day basis. Consider joining a concierge association, such as the International Concierge and Lifestyle Management Association or National Concierge Association, or find a concierge network in your area.

Junk Removal It’s indisputable: People will always have junk. For a fee, you can help them get rid of it. First, find out what type of junk removal services are needed in your area. Depending on the services you offer, you may need trucks,

COAST TO COAST BUSINESS NETWORK | Issue #

14

dumpsters, safety equipment, shovels, and more. Research local and state regulations, and learn about proper removal and disposal techniques. You should be certified to deal with hazardous materials. Also consider disposal fees, and price high enough so that these fees don’t eat into your profits.

Bakery Americans’ love affair with desserts — the cuter and tinier, the better — seems to have kicked in to overdrive. If you’ve got a knack for making delectable desserts, consider starting a home-based bakery. You can offer your desserts for delivery or pickup, parties, and sell them from stores and online. Before getting started, contact your local public health department to find out about the laws governing at-home food production. New cottage food laws passed and pending in many states are making it easier to start a food business at home without a commercial kitchen. Other considerations are drafting a solid business plan, packaging, marketing, and, of course, using your tastiest recipes to keep customers coming back!

Repossession Services This is another business that benefits from a down economy. In this trade, you’ll repossess vehicles on behalf of banks and loan companies from borrowers who fail to make payments. Once you’re experienced, repossessing a vehicle is a quick job, and you can make a lot of profit. Keep in mind, though, that the startup expenses can be substantial, including a tow truck, storage space, insurance, licensing, and more. You’ll need to be well-versed in the repo laws for your state, and, of course, have the temperament to handle run-ins with potentially disgruntled borrowers.

Debt Collection Agency With scores of people falling behind on debts, now’s the perfect time to start a debt collection agency, which requires little more than a phone and a computer. You’ll help retailers, hospitals, and credit card companies recover money they’re owed, and in return you’ll get a percentage of the collected debt. Before starting, you need to fully understand the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Also research state and local regulations, such as licensing. Though not required, training or a degree in business or finance may add credibility to your company. Finally, realize that debt collection requires a certain amount of finesse, empathy, and resolve.

Senior Care Services A growing population of senior citizens means big opportunity for nonmedical home care providers, who help seniors with tasks of daily living. The services you offer might include transportation, house cleaning, dietary assistance, bathing, administering medicines, and, perhaps most important, companionship. Before getting

COAST TO COAST BUSINESS NETWORK | Issue #

15

started, do your research. Find out how many seniors are in your area and what types of services they need. Contact local and state government agencies to learn about the regulations governing senior care businesses in your area. For more tips, visit the Small Business Administration website.

Accounting With loads of businesses looking to save money by outsourcing accounting services to qualified individuals, certified public accountants can make a solid income. Starting a CPA business from home requires relatively low overhead, but it may take time to land the clients needed to turn a profit. You can market your services through networking, and you might consider starting your business part time until it gets off the ground. While you can be an accountant without CPA certification, CPAs have a strong advantage over their noncertified peers. Visit the American Institute of CPAs website for information on specific state requirements.

My final thoughts, no matter what your Passion or Talent is, I say pursue YOUR DREAMS. Everyone has some kind of Talent or Expertise. I say GO FOR IT!!!!

How to Weave Your Way to a New Business in Kansas City By Kyle Smith

Have you ever knitted a sock? It looks simple enough. Needles and yarn, under and over until... you have a sock. If you have knitted a sock, you know it’s much harder than that, but very satisfying for the hands, mind and heart. And nothing feels better than pulling on a sock that you made yourself. When Johanna Miller started the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program, she knew how to knit a sock and wanted to open her own yarn store, but didn’t have the business savvy to pull all the threads together. “I never thought of myself as a business person. I didn’t think I could learn the things needed to run my own business. And I was very scared.”

What it takes to own a business

COAST TO COAST BUSINESS NETWORK | Issue #

17

She may have been scared, but she did have business experience. She worked for over a decade as a hairstylist with a specialty in extreme(ly cool) dye jobs (think fantastic, colorful dos from comic con). When she mentioned to her neighbor in the historic Northeast neighborhood of Kansas City that she wanted to open a yarn store, they told her she should check out the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program, an eight-week business feasibility program offered by UMKC SBTDC. “When they told me I was eligible for a huge scholarship via the Urban Business Growth Initiative because I lived in Kansas City, Missouri, I was sold.” Ice House Entrepreneurship participants learn what skills they already bring to the table and how to develop others, test the market to learn who may pay for their services and products, learn from an experienced, knowledgeable instructor and build a community amongst themselves. Johanna’s Ice House peers were a diverse bunch in terms of age, industry and experience. But they all had a common goal—to start their own business. And a common obstacle. “We all had expectations that to start your own business you had to have all this schooling and all this money.” The Ice House Entrepreneurship tore down this prevalent myth. “It was really cool to learn that to start your own business you don’t have to have all of these things—there are ways around it, there are ways to think creatively and there are ways to empower yourself to go and get it.”

Help starting a business This mindset shift allowed Johanna to take huge leaps forward and make the most of the program, as did her UMKC SBTDC coach. “I felt like she genuinely cared about everybody there. She was awesome at balancing enthusiasm and support for you and your idea, with a practical knowledge of business. She wouldn’t tell you your idea was a good idea if you were going to lose money. She would tell you straight up—this is not a good risk for you.” Which is exactly what Johanna learned during Ice House. Opening a brick and mortar yarn store wasn’t going to be feasible based on her finances or level of commitment. So she scrapped the idea, like a knitted sock that didn’t turn out just right. “Doing all that research, even though it was discouraging to give up on my idea, was a great way to know confidently that I was making the right decision and that I wasn’t going to waste my time or money.”

Turning a hobby into a business Over the following year, Johanna used the principles she learned during Ice House to improve upon her hair stylist gig. And that’s when it came to her—just because she didn’t want to open a storefront didn’t mean she couldn’t sell yarn. “Hand dyeing yarn has been a hobby of mine for some time. After thorough research and planning, skills I learned during Ice House, it became clear to me that I could sell my yarns online.”

COAST TO COAST BUSINESS NETWORK | Issue #

18

So Johanna started her current business, Potion Yarns. She hand dyes yarn and sells them online to artists and crafters. Because this business has so many fewer costs than a brick and mortar store, in just seven months, she has grow it into a profitable business. Johanna started the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program too scared to start her own business. Today, she’s turning a profit on her business and putting all of that money back into growth. “I never thought I could start a company from the ground up, and I have. Knowing that I can accomplish anything if I set my mind to it, and I really want to do it, has been super empowering for me.”

Weaving a bigger and better business And this is just the start for Johanna and Potions Yarns. Her next step is to get the dyeing process out of her kitchen and into a dedicated space in her house. And eventually she would like to do it full time and support her husband as he pursues his own entrepreneurial ideas. Maybe he will take Ice House, too. Johanna encourages anyone interested in starting a business to take the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program. “By taking the class you’re not committing to starting a business. You’re just committing to learning and growing your experience to see if you want to start a business. It’s the best first step to get you on the road.”

STRUGGLE PT1 AUTHOR: SRIJAN GOPAL

‘We are getting late, let’s go’, said Navya. ‘What’s the hurry, four hours are still left for the show’ I replied lazily. ‘We’re not going to watch a show Pratik, it’s our own, and we’ll rock the show’ said Navya in a confident voice. I met with her two years ago in a singing competition, we both were finalists. She won the competition and I won her. We waited for two years for the day. It was our dream to give a stage performance together. Two years of togetherness surely helped us to know each other. That composing of songs together, that late night sweet arguments over lyrics, that first drops of rain which she collected and threw on me, and her chuckling after that, that walking hand in hand at night. We made all these pleasant memories in two years. ‘Where are you thinking? Let’s go’, she said again. She checked the guitar string while I called our music band to reach the auditorium on time. We left our home and took a bus to the auditorium. Navya was very excited. The smile on her face just made my day. She suddenly spoke, ‘Shall we rehearse for a last time, Pratik?’

‘Here, in the bus?’ I was startled by her excitation. ‘Yeah, what’s wrong with that?’ she said making a cute face. A smile automatically came to my lips seeing her like that. She smiled back.

‘Hello everyone, we want to sing a song in front of you all’ she spoke standing up. The people cheered with a thumbs up. The people lost in thoughts as we begin to sing. Music affects the brain in such a positive way that we start introspecting us. That was probably happening with the co passengers. We probably gave our best performance ever that day in the bus, but suddenly a guy stood up from the back corner of the bus and said, ‘No it’s not the right way, the last note you sang isn’t up to the mark.’

I got furious. I always have problem with people judging others who are much better than you. But then he started singing the last note of the song. It was out of the world. I was impressed.

Navya started clapping as he ended the song. I was little surprised as she doesn’t appreciates anyone easily. Then why this time?

To be continued…

-------------------------------------------------------------BEY'S STRAIGHT TALK MARKETING JOURNAL -------------------------------------------------------------How Much Money Did You Lose In 2017? Greetings Everyone!!! Well, we are about to roll into another year. Did you lose money this year? I'll almost guarantee over 90% of online marketers have lost money this year. How do I know this? The answer is simple... Most marketers who start a online home business lose money because they don't take the time to do the research. They don't learn: -

How to choose a hungry market Where to find your hungry market

What your hungry market ready to buy NOW How to turn prospects into long term customers

There are hundreds of thousands of people trying to market online every day. Unfortunately most of them did not make any money this year because they continue to throw their money at unworkable, useless money making schemes... I know this because, year after year I was one of them, spending money in vain trying to make a few extra dollars, and always coming up way short at the end of the year. So, now I try to help others avoid making the mistake of thinking if they just keep looking, they will find that perfect program to make them the money they need. What I personally came to realize a few years ago was this: if I wanted amy chance of making extra money in a business of my own, I needed to invest in some learning tools rather than investing in false promises to make quick, easy money... Learning From The Experience of Others Over the years, I have learned from many successful marketers. However, I learned by watching what they did, not always what they said.

What I mean is this: when you are low on cash, you can learn from marketers like Dan Kennedy just by reading his sales letters. Dan is a master marketer who has made many other marketing millionaires. Any time I get an email from him I automatically read it because I know I am going to learn a marketing lesson, and it won't cost me a dime. There are several other marketers I learn from every day just watching what they do. You can always learn from savvy marketers because their sales letters, email messages, blog posts and videos can be valuable learning tools. This has been a big part of my marketing education and it didn't cost me thousands of dollars I didn't have. So, if you want to begin to stop losing money in 2018 and even maybe make a few extra dollars just locate a few successful marketers in your niche, study what they do, and emulate what they do. This will surely help you improve your own marketing strategy. Once you test and find a marketing strategy that works for you, all you need to do is repeat it over and over again. This is what I have found to work for me and it can work for you... Let me close with some words from Dan Kennedy, these words are from a recent video. "Real security depends upon your ability to produce." Your success depends on being willing to use your time and your mind to reach your goals. You reach your goals by learning from others and then taking action to apply what you learn. The only way you can lose is to give up. You can't win if you don't stay in the game. That's it for now. Until next time, Happy Marketing Greg Bey P.S. Here is a great learning tool that will help you avoid losing money in 2018, you can go here to take a look now: http://go2homebiz101.com/freshleads

ABOUT THIS BLOG WAS CREATED TO DISPLAY A PORTFOLIO OF MY WRITING AND EDITING SKILLS BOTH IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA. Unsure of what to write about or how to keep my audience interested, the most ethical approach I could come up with is to be myself and write whatever I find necessary.

On a more personal level, I was diagnosed with bipolar depression six years after realizing I had some sort of depression. After years of denying medication, I finally caved and opened my eyes. Medication may not be for everyone, but for me it has adjusted my life in a way I never could have imagined. Life is so much easier to tackle and put into perspective when the chemicals in your brain are balanced.

I hope that if anything, what my readers get out of this is not only a novel of entertainment and ideas, but also the comfort of knowing that there is a life to life outside of what you may have known or live with now.

In saying that, Tumblr blogs have helped me a lot therapeutically until I found professional help. I hope to be not only a successful blogger, but a successful friend to you as well.

America's malls are rotting away by Laura Sanicola @laurasanicola December 12, 2017: 8:12 PM ET

The worst is yet to come for American shopping malls. As Macy's, JC Penney, Sears and other major department stores close their doors, the malls that housed those stores are facing a serious crisis. That's because when so-called anchor tenants leave a mall, it opens the door for other stores to break their leases or negotiate much cheaper rent. As one big store closes, it can take several smaller stores along with it like a house of cards. Experts predict that a quarter of American malls will close in five years -- around 300 out of 1,100 that currently exist. "When anchor stores close, it causes big problems for mall owners and other retailers in the mall," says Howard Davidowitz, chairman of New York-based retail consulting and investment banking firm Davidowitz & Associates. "And I'd say this problem is only in its second inning." Retailers often sign co-tenancy agreements in their leases with malls, allowing them to reduce their rent or get out of a lease if a big store closes. That's because the smaller retailers next to anchor stores no longer benefit from the foot traffic that the major retailers received, according to Garrick Brown, vice president of retail research for Cushman & Wakefield. Brown said he expects the weakest malls to enter "death spirals." Many former anchor tenants are closing hundreds of stores as Amazon (AMZN) eats their lunch. Sears (SHLD), which had operated nearly 3,800 stores as recently as a decade ago is now down to 1,104 stores. Macy's (M) closed 68 stores this year, and JCPenney (JCP) was set to shutter 128. It's not just department stores that have mall owners worried.

When Starbucks (SBUX) announced that it was closing its Teavana tea line and wanted to shutter all of its stores, mall operator Simon Property Group (SPG) countered with a lawsuit. Simon cited in part the effect the store closures might have on other mall tenants. Earlier this month, a judge upheld Simons' suit, ordering Teavana to keep 77 of its stores open.

Some successful malls may be able to survive if they can convert department stores' spaces into better attractions for consumers. Many big tenants were getting discounted rates on their leases, and malls may be able to charge higher rates to new tenants, according to Brown and Davidowitz. "There will be a new push to get food halls and entertainment in malls, and make it more of an experience that will draw people in," Brown says. However, even if new tenants can pay more for the space, smaller "specialty" stores can still break their leases if an anchor store leaves. It's also unlikely that underperforming malls will be able to attract crowds anyway. Experts classify malls into "A" "B" "C" and "D" grades characterized in part by sales per square footage of the malls. "B" malls and below are going to have a particularly hard time with the financial burden of the changing mall landscape, according to Brown. The retail loan default rate is currently hovering around 5%, but Brown expects that number to triple. And with defaults come bankruptcies -- lots an lots of bankruptcies. More than 300 retailers have already filed for bankruptcy this year. "If that's not an apocalypse then I don't know what is," says Davidowitz.

GreatBeerNow Do you love great beer? Do you plan your vacations to include visits to breweries and brewpubs? Do you spend hours surfing the internet looking for beer products, beer travel ideas, beer merchandise, and beer- related news? I’m Bryan Carey and let me just say that, if you’re one of these people, never fear- you are not alone. I understand fully how you feel about the world’s greatest beverage. And I have dedicated this web site to educating, discussing, and promoting the good word of beer. I have personally tasted more than 4,000 different beers and I have published reviews on more than 600 of these malt beverage products, including domestic, macrobrew, microbrew, and imports. My quest for the perfect libation began in the late 1980’s and since then I have discovered that I have several passions in life, but not many can match my drive to find the perfect glass of brew. During my travels my taste buds have led me to a number of nationally recognized as well as little known brewpubs, where everyone has the chance to enjoy good food, conversation, music and of course, excellent craft brews. It is my hope that this site can indulge the beer lover in everyone. So pull up a chair, sit back, relax, pop open a bottle of your favorite brew, and let’s talk a little bit about the greatest beverage known to man.

discover. create. perform. live. The Uptown Arts Bar is dedicated to performing arts in Kansas City presenting original, unjuried and uncensored art every day of the week. Performers range from improv and comedy, burlesque to belly dance, poetry and playwrights, from mime to music, and so much more! Greg Patterson, owner of the Uptown Arts Bar, founded the venue in February of 2012 and established his deep conviction about the importance of the arts as the backbone of the bar. His dream was to create a small scale, intimate venue for performers of all ilk to make their home. Since he took the chance, the Arts Bar has grown from just a few events a week to one of the busiest venues around. We are very honored to receive five nods in the Pitch’s 2017 “Best of” issue: #1 Best Place to Meet People, and placing in Best Open Mic, Best Comedy Club, Best Karaoke and Best Art Space. Also, all three poets in Best Poet/Spoken Word Artist category call Arts Bar their home. We host an average of 50 events a month, including private parties and fundraisers. The upstairs bar, Niche, hosts a stunning hand-made sound system called Meta Hi-Fi and showcases a wide array of electronic music every week Th-Sat. Mr. Patterson holds a strong conviction on the importance of giving back to the community. The bar has annual fundraisers for many different organizations: KKFI community radio, Historic KC, YMCA, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Heartland Chapter of the Alzheimers Association and more. proud to be able to contribute to the success of these important groups. Greg also hosts many events to engage the community or increase awareness and annually produces “The Human Be-In,” which not only celebrates the revolutionary spirit of the ‘60’s, but also encourages a current sense of social action. He has also presented special remembrances for John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelou, and Robin Williams. Kick off your week with Comedy Open Mic hosted by Tom Larson on Mondays at 9, follow up on Tuesdays with music open mic, 9 pm. Then hit the hump on Wednesday with a poetry and spoken word open mic on Wednesdays, hosted by local collective, Poetic Underground, at 9 pm. Every Thursday is KARAOKE, never a cover, always wild. We also regularly host Brown Sugar Cabaret burlesque troupe, Mosaic Music and Arts Showcase, Intelligent Sound electronic music, Lucha Raptor improv group showcases, Kansas City Poetry Slam, Middle of the Mic workshops and features, Brother John’s musical revues, Billie Mahoney tap jams, Potluck Productions staged play readings, 1001 Arabian Nights belly dance and beyond, KC’s first EMO night and Squad of Siblings Feminist Open Mic. The Arts Bar is located near the intersection of Valentine and Broadway in the Uptown District of Midtown, which is the coolest up and coming neighborhood of the city. The bar was built in 1925 and originally named the Betsy Ross Building. We can host up to 150 people between the main bar, the main stage, our upstairs bar “The Niche,” and our 2nd floor outdoor patio which lets guests bring their drinks to enjoy the weather and a square. We have a great set-up for shows. Guests can watch and listen to the main stage performance on multiple screens throughout both bars and on the patio. We have led lights which create a great dance vibe for DJ nights, and most importantly there is never a television show on in the bar! The Arts Bar is the spot to get away from the norm and be entertained by something live, original and creative. Come on along to the Arts Bar and be entertained!
