Conservative Backbencher of the Year

Richard Bacon MP

Richard Bacon was first elected as Member of Parliament for South Norfolk in 2001 and has twice been re-elected to represent the South Norfolk constituency. Richard is a senior member of the influential Public Accounts Committee and also continues to campaign for a change the law on compulsory country-of-origin labelling for food. In 2006 his fellow MPs voted him ‘Backbencher of the Year’ and he was also awarded the title ‘Parliamentarian of the Year’ by both the Spectator magazine and the Political Studies Association. Richard is married to Victoria, with two children, and lives locally with his family.

Jeremy Corbyn MP

Jeremy Corbyn was first elected to parliament in 1983 for Islington North and has been re-elected at six subsequent elections. Jeremy is renowned for not being afraid to put his head above the parapet, speaking for those without a voice and campaigning for the human rights of all. The need for more affordable housing for his constituents in Islington has dominated his activities for many years. Recently he has spoken against the renewal of Trident, preferring the money to be spent on health and housing instead. He is very active locally and in Parliament, being a member of the Justice Select Committee since 2011, and chairing a number of All-Party Groups including Human Rights, the Chagos Islands, Mexico, the Western Sahara and Parliamentary CND.

Helena Kennedy, Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws QC An expert in human rights law, civil liberties and constitutional issues and has received many honours for her work. Current chair of Justice - the British arm of the International Commission of Jurists, she was the Chair of the British Council and Chair of the Human Genetics Commission. She recently produced a report for the Equality and Human Rights Commission on Human Trafficking in Scotland and was a member of the Government Commission on a British Bill of Rights. She is the Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Institute of Human Rights. She is also Principal of Mansfield college, Oxford.

Lakshmi Mittal is the Chairman and CEO of the world's leading steel and mining company ArcelorMittal, and a board member of Goldman Sachs and EADS. He is a member of the Advisory Board, Kellogg, and of the Board of Trustees, Cleveland Clinic. He is a Doctor Honoris Causa (AGH Krakow) and a recipient of the Indian Padma Vibhushan honour. With a presence in more than 60 countries, ArcelorMittal is the leader in all major global carbon steel markets, including automotive, construction, household appliances and packaging, with leading R&D and technology. As a supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, ArcelorMittal created the ArcelorMittal Orbit, a permanent landmark sculpture on the Olympic Park, intended as a symbol for London 2012 and of the regeneration of East London.
