A designated-driver program is expecting larger-than-ever demand for its services this holiday season, now that tougher drinking and driving penalties are in place. Operation Red Nose – hosted in Abbotsford-Mission by PacificSport Fraser Valley (PSFV) – is hoping to attract more volunteers than ever as holiday partygoers look for alternative ways to get home. Christine Scott, communications co-ordinator for PSFV, said an example of the program’s popularity occurred last New Year’s Eve. “We could have probably had more than double the number of teams to meet the demand,” she said. This year the organization is aiming to fill 450 volunteer shifts locally, compared to the 376 it provided in 2009. So far this year, 167 shifts have been filled. Calls have already been coming in from people planning their outings, and Scott is anticipating an increase in financial support from local pubs and bars. The non-profit program relies on sponsorship from the com-

munity. While the ride is free, donations are strongly urged. Proceeds benefit PSFV in support of the development of athletes, coaches and sports facilities. ORN volunteers work in teams of a driver, navigator and escort vehicle driver. They pick up an individual or group and then drive them home in their own car. Scott said volunteers can work as little as one shift. They must be at least 21 years old if they are applying to be a driver, but volunteers are also needed at headquarters – for example, to operate the phones – and to wear the costume of ORN mascot Rudy at community events. Abbotsford-Mission has been involved with ORN for as long as it has operated in B.C. – 15 years. Service begins Nov. 26 and continues every Friday and Saturday until Dec. 18, as well as on New Year’s Eve. Phones are open from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., and rides are placed in the queue until a volunteer driver is available. To volunteer for Operation Red Nose in Abbotsford, call 604-8544657 or visit operationrednose. com. To arrange a ride once the service begins, call 604-864-4814.

A soldier’s story Abbotsford veteran talks about war and remembrance Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
When Roy Garrett sees news coverage of Canadians fighting in Afghanistan, he doesn’t think much of politics, and he doesn’t compare the reasons he fought in World War II with the justifications for modern conflicts. He thinks of the soldiers. “I respect them. They never started it, the soldiers, but they’ve got to fight it. “I feel for them. The old guys start the war, and the young guys have got to fight it.” Garrett was one of those young men when he signed up in 1942. He had been loving life in Coleman, Alberta. He had a steady girlfriend, was a standout hockey player, and had a good job loading coal cars at the mine where his dad worked. But all his friends were joining the army, so he did too. He trained in Calgary and Brandon, married Eileen, and five months later, at the age of 21, was shipped overseas. He saw action in Italy, serving as a driver/mechanic with a jeep platoon. The job was to run supplies – ammunition, food, reinforcements or whatever was needed – to
Roy Garrett returned to active duty as a supply truck driver even though his ear drums had been ruptured when his jeep went over a land mine. the troops on the front lines. Sometimes he would bring wounded back. It was 1944 in northern Italy. There was war all around, and it reached out and struck him on a return trip from the front. The right front tire of his jeep passed over a mine. It blew the tire off, as well as the
foot of his passenger. Garrett thought he had escaped with only some minor burns on his face. But when the ringing in his ears didn’t go away, he was transferred to a hospital, and learned both his eardrums had been ruptured. He still wears hearing aids. “My souvenirs, I guess.”
After three months of treatment and recuperating, he was put back on active duty. “As soon as you were well enough to go up to the front lines, you had to go.” His new assignment was driving trucks loaded with ammunition for self-propelled guns. He saw much of Europe, stationed in England, Africa, France, Belgium and Czechoslovakia; and saw action in Italy and Holland. He remembers hiding in a slit trench, or foxhole, while artillery rained down. “You’d stick your nose right in the corner and say ‘God, if I ever get out of this, I’ll be such a good boy...’” Back home, his wife received notices that he was twice mentioned in dispatches for distinguished service. Nobody ever told him what for. Once, Italian civilians alerted him to a German soldier hiding in a culvert, and Garrett loaded him into a jeep and brought him in as a prisoner. Three weeks before the end of the war, he and a sergeant were checking out a Dutch house, and heard a noise in the cellar. “He said to me ‘Open that door and holler, and we’ll see what comes out.’ Well, 35 of them came out. And we only had a revolver between the two of us.” Garrett was ordered to lead the surrendering Germans, while the sergeant stood at Continued on A7
Saying ‘thank you’ on Remembrance Day “Thank you.” Those simple words mean a great deal to a veteran, and at this time of year, as they sell poppies at stores and locations around Abbotsford, veterans hear them often. “That’s what gets me the most,” said Doug Matthews, the second vice-president of the Abbotsford Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, and a one-time air force cook in post-war Germany. When he asks young children what the poppy means, they can tell him. The message is still alive.
“Parents are teaching them.” The money raised from poppy sales goes into the Legion Poppy Fund, and veterans who require assistance can apply. Last year, approximately $32,000 was donated for the vets of Abbotsford. Today, citizens will line Veterans’ Way, east of the ceno-

taph, at 10:30 a.m. There will be Legion members, local veterans, current members of the armed forces, the Silverfox Air Cadets band, the RCAF Association, ANAVETS, the Abbotsford Police, RCMP, Scout groups and local politicians. At 11 a.m. the procession will march onto Thunderbird Square and
the ceremony of remembrance will start, as a young member of the Silverfox Squadron bugles the Last Post. Wreaths will be laid, and the names of lost soldiers on the Abbotsford cenotaph called out. Last year, some 2,000 people turned out to show their respect. “It’s very important,” said Matthews. “It means they remember. They’re there to honour the ones who didn’t come home, and to say thanks to the ones who did.”
NewsBytes ROAD CHECK POT BUST A 31-year-old Abbotsford man was among two arrested Nov. 4 in Langley after about 50 stalks of recently harvested marijuana were found in the car he was driving. Langley RCMP traffic officers were conducting a road check in the 21500 block of Fraser Highway at about 7 p.m. They stopped a white van after they noticed the smell of pot coming from the vehicle. A search of the van produced a 33-gallon Rubbermaid container filled with the marijuana stalks. The Abbotsford man was arrested along with his passenger, a 31-year-old Langley man. They face charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
MARSHALL CLOSED A full road closure will be in effect on Marshall Road, at the Southern Railway Crossing, on Nov. 21-22 from 6 a.m to 10 a.m. each day. The closure is to facilitate the replacement of the Southern Railway crossing. A detour route will be in effect during the construction period. No through traffic will be permitted during the full road closure.
NO CREDIT FOR TUITION Starting in January, students at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will no longer be able to say “Charge it to my credit card” when paying tuition for courses. The move is a cost-cutting measure. UFV chief financial officer Jackie Hogan said the university has been paying nearly half a million dollars annually in transaction fees to credit card companies. UBC, SFU, Kwantlen and Vancouver Island University have also made the decision. Students will still be able to use a credit card to pay for application fees, graduation fees, transcripts and continuing studies courses.

Appeal dismissed on drug conviction Man arrested in church parking lot following tip to police Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
An appeal has been dismissed for a man convicted of possession for the purpose of trafficking after
police seized 120,000 ecstasy tablets from the vehicle he was driving. David Paul Jir, 22, was arrested on Dec. 21, 2007 after the Abbotsford
Police Department received a tip that he was carrying drugs intended to be smuggled across the border into the U.S. The tipster provided police with
the licence plate of a 2007 red Chrysler Sebring that was due to arrive at a church at the corner of Huntingdon Road and Columbia Street in Abbotsford.
An officer dispatched to the scene saw the Sebring pull into the parking lot, stopped the vehicle and arrested Jir, the sole occupant. A second officer then
arrived, and they searched the car. Three duffle bags were found in the trunk, containing a total of 24 vacuumsealed packages. Each package held

five baggies, each with 1,000 ecstasy tablets. Jir was sentenced in March 2009 in A bb o t s fo rd provincial court to five years in prison. Jir appealed the conviction on the grounds that the trial judge erred when concluding that the search of his vehicle and his arrest were lawful, and that the drugs were admissible as evidence. In their reasons for judgment, two of the three appeal court justices – S. David Frankel and Catherine Anne Ryan – agreed with the trial judge that Jir had been lawfully arrested. They said the two officers at the scene had reasonable grounds to arrest him, based on the anonymous tip. “The highly specific information provided by the tipster with respect to vehicle, place and time had been confirmed ... there did not appear to be any reason for the Sebring to have pulled into the church parking lot at that time of night,” Frankel stated. The third justice, Harvey Groberman, said the arrest and the search of the vehicle were unlawful. The anonymous tip contained only “a moderate amount of detail” and was not confirmation that Jir was committing a crime, he said. However, he said the infringement was not on the “more serious end of the spectrum.” He agreed with Frankel and Ryan that the drugs were admissible as evidence and that the appeal should be dismissed.

When he returned from the war he moved to Mission, and then finally settled in Abbotsford, where he and Eileen have made their life together. “We’ve got 67 years.” Garrett was a truck driver, and later got a job with the provincial government as a weigh master, spending 26 years enforcing commercial trucking regulations. A tough Liberal road Gordon Campbell’s slow fade-toblack resignation leaves the Liberals with quite the political challenge. Clearly, his decision was made, at least in part, for the benefit of the party. As the most unpopular premier in recent history, the longer that Campbell stayed on, the longer the public discontent with the present government. From that perspective, a fast-tracked change of leadership would be a clear advantage to the Liberals. However, it’s not that simple. The party has two choices available to it – select a leader from among its sitting MLAs, or, give someone else the opportunity. It’s easier and quicker to do the former, yet that carries a serious downside. Anyone from the Liberal benches is an integral part of the government’s decisions – if not in personal philosophy, certainly by direct association.
And that will invariably impact votes in the next provincial election. On the other hand, if the Liberals clear the way for an “outsider,” such as Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts – who some experts say has strong potential to pull the party from the political fire – the process is far more complicated. Because she doesn’t have the profile of the possible inside contenders, such as Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong, Watts would have to move fast and effectively to gain enough party support. Even so, if Watts or another external candidate were to win the Liberal leadership race, she or he would then need to win a byelection in a vacant constituency to take part in the spring session of the legislature that begins in February. The window for that is very narrow. Either way, the Liberals have no easy political road to travel. And they’ll do so in a very large shadow, unless Campbell speeds his exit.
Campbell pushes industrial legacy Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views Gordon Campbell isn’t going to get close to W.A.C. Bennett’s record of 20 years in the premier’s office, but he intends to leave a footprint at least as large on B.C. Campbell’s surprise resignation last week came as I was attempting to sort out his latest reorganization of resource ministries. His comments since then have made me even more convinced that this is the key task he intends to push to the point of no return before he goes. While the city media obsess over the horse race of potential candidates to succeed Campbell, this much more significant story is unfolding quietly in government offices around the province. Thousands of provincial employees are being moved and shaken to build the new Ministry of Natural Resource Operations. Here’s a partial list of what this minis-
try is now legally responsible for: wildfire management, Crown land and forest permits, independent power production, road and bridge engineering, mineral and coal titles, resorts and alpine ski developments, fish and wildlife management, drought management, watershed restoration and aboriginal consultation on resource development. And here is a partial list of what Campbell intends to see develop through this ministry: the Site C dam, a province-wide network of new mines, forest tenures, liquefied natural gas production and export facilities, new independent power projects, and all the roads, power lines and pipes needed to connect them. This is a wave of industrialization on a scale with Cecil Bennett’s creation of BC Hydro, BC Ferries and BC Rail. An internal memo circulated to staff in the forest, transportation, environment and other ministries gives assurances that the B.C. Forest Service will celebrate its 100th anniversary as planned in 2012. But by then it will be effectively broken up, divided between the ministries of forests and natural resource operations, and traditional jobs such as forest enforcement officer and conservation officer will
be merged. Before this reorganization was announced, I asked Energy Minister Bill Bennett about the government’s plans for a feed-in tariff program for new sources of electricity. Bennett (no relation to the two former premiers) said he intends to have it in place as soon as possible, per-
Thousands of provincial employees are being moved and shaken to build the new Ministry of Natural Resource Operations haps by the end of the year. It will be nothing like the Ontario program, which heavily subsidizes farmers for putting solar panels in their fields, Bennett said. The B.C. program will subsidize development of emerging sources, particularly those using wood waste. “You put a First Nation together with
a community that’s lost a bunch of jobs from the pine beetle, together with a form of electricity producing technology, and as long as you can generate the electricity for a reasonable price, you might have a winning project,” Bennett said. “That to me is how you encapsulate the feed-in tariff program.” For years there has been debate about the decline of small communities, loss of industrial jobs and wildfire management in B.C.’s vast hinterlands. In short, how do you keep smaller, remote communities economically viable, and how do they protect themselves from fire? Here, at least, is a plan that offers a way to tackle the huge problem of accumulated forest fuel, waste from traditional logging, and jobs and energy supply in remote areas. It will be subsidized by the vast majority of electricity users who enjoy the benefits of the urban economy. There will be plenty of talk in the weeks to come about Campbell’s legacy. The income tax cuts, the HST, both are designed to create an environment for private investment and employment. The resource development plan may be the most important piece of the puzzle. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Just say no to the evil of harm reduction Mayor George Peary has it reversed. The question of “ethics” regarding the socalled “harm reduction” is not whether the addict is a “criminal or a victim” (his words ), but whether the “ethics” in this case, is whether we want to help or harm him/her.
Giving an addict a way to keep them enslaved to the addiction is a moral “ethical” issue. But the right or wrong of this case is that encouraging the addiction by supplying them with the paraphernalia to maintain the addiction is the problem. To do this is wrong.
The addict who wishes to break the addiction should be encouraged, and helped with whatever is needed to overcome the addiction – not given needles to prolong it just because we fear the addict will hurt others in order to feed his addiction. The law enforcement
people could well protect us, if only the judiciary would sup-
port the hard-working police officers in their enforcement duties.
A change of habits I have my own reservations about the new drinking driving laws, from the point of view of concerns about due process. Having said that, I have been reading with some interest the growing chorus of complaints from restaurant and pub owners over the substantial loss to business caused by this new initiative. If the figures are to be believed, the logical conclusion of the business owners is that the laws need
to be adjusted. There is, of course, another logical conclusion. Again, assuming the change in consumption habits to be an accurate reflection of the outcome of the change in legislation, then there must now be a heck of a lot fewer drivers on the road who are under the influence of alcohol. Business concerns aside, that seems like a very good thing. Don Chapman
New laws are working Alexa Middleaer lost her life because of a drunken idiot who only consumed three glasses of wine. Hundreds of innocent people have died or are maimed because of drunk driving. Stop complaining about a 30 per cent drop in revenues
made on booze. Customers will come back. Unless you are 60 pounds, one drink with dinner after work won’t get you close to 0.05. By the way, three drinks in an hour will put you over, and make you a danger on
the road. The new laws are a deterrent. They are working. If the local police, who have one of the best contracts in the policing universe, cannot articulate this, then I will. M. Maletfatigue

Politicians have chosen to serve the people I am writing this letter after reading the story about a new library being okayed by council. Quite amazing the way our council thinks and acts. I can understand city managers or police managers always proposing new expansion plans
of all kind, because they then can justify that since they are overseeing a large number of responsibilities and/or employees, they are deserving of higher wages. You know the formula politicians use when they use “comparable cities”
or “comparable positions” to justify hiking their own wages – sometimes five, 10 times or higher than the rate of inflation. Now back to our civic politicians. They are elected to represent city folks. This is not merely an employment opportunity for them. They
have chosen to serve the people of this city, which I don’t think they are doing very well. Pretending to consult people on tax hikes, then hiking them at any rate they want, and giving their chosen departments their maximum wish lists; not even asking
or trying for once a different path, a path of maximizing efficiencies, eliminating fat, reducing expenses and concentrating on needs rather than wants; where they would worry about our new water and sewer system rather than building fancy new buildings, friendship gardens and spending mil-
lions in partnership with YMCA. Proof is our Plan A, multi-million dollars spent which all of us will be repaying for 25 or more years with increased taxation. Then there was the $2 million clock demanded by “our” new team; millions being spent on constant roadwork all over the city, some
roads dug up, worked upon and repaved and then dug up again in only a few months for something else; where they could slow down in times of decreased revenues for city from developers due to recession. The list could go on and on. Bottom line: they don’t care. A. Khangura

Three charged with summer stabbing 24-year-old victim suffered multiple knife wounds Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Three Abbotsford men have been charged with aggravated assault in connection with a stabbing on King Road in August. Her man Sidhu, 20; Bhavdeep Deol, 21; and Gurparit (Gurpreet) Gill, 31, are currently in custody. The charges relate to an incident on Aug. 22 at about 1:45
a.m. on the roadway between Finnegan’s Pub and Grill and the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre in the 33700 block of King Road. At the time, Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said a dispute allegedly started inside the pub between the victim and three men. It didn’t get physical until the facility closed and
the individuals went outside. A 24-year-old man was stabbed multiple times in his arms and torso and was taken to hospital. A woman at the scene suffered some minor injuries. MacDonald said three men fled the scene in a black Honda Civic and were stopped by police shortly after near Albert Dyck Park on Walmsley Avenue. The investigation

included interviewing several witnesses and reviewing surveillance video from the area. At the time of the assault, MacDonald said drug or gang connections did not appear to be involved. In addition to the aggravated assault charge, Sidhu was charged with failure
or refusal to provide a breath sample on the day of the stabbing. He has no criminal convictions, according to provincial court records. Deol was convicted in May 2009 of two counts of assault causing bodily harm for an incident in November 2007 and was placed on pro-
bation for one year. He was acquitted on a charge of assault with a weapon. Gill has numerous convictions, including assault, possession of a prohibited weapon, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, mischief, and impaired driving. Last month, he was
charged with numerous weapons offences, including possession of a restricted firearm and careless use of a firearm. He is next scheduled to appear on those charges this Friday (Nov. 12) – the same day that he, Deol and Sidhu are due in court on the aggravated assault charges.

Valley market more balanced It is still a buyer’s market in Fraser Valley real estate, but October brought more balance, as inventory declined while sales and prices remained stable. A total of 1,014 sales were processed on the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board’s Multiple Listing Service in October. That was a decrease of three per cent compared to 1,044 sales in September, and is also down 40 per cent compared with 1,704 sales in October of last year. “With help from near-record low mortgage rates and a steady decrease in the supply of homes, we’re getting back to what I call a ‘normal’, balanced market,” said board president Deanna Horn. “However, sellers should be aware that demand for homes is strong, yet selective. Buyers in the Fraser Valley recognize that selection, although dropping is still generous and they’re looking for properties priced competitively. Even with carrying costs remaining stable, the affordability threshold is a factor.”0 The board received 2,125 new listings last month, a 12 per cent decrease from September and a 25 per
Monique Papineau
cent decrease compared to October 2009. The board finished October with 9,561 active listings – four per cent fewer than in September and an increase of nine per cent compared to the 8,807 properties available in October 2009. “When supply and demand move into balance, prices can become a real ‘sticking point’ underlining the importance of hiring a professional realtor who knows your local market and can provide detailed comparisons to ensure your home is priced competitively,” said Horn. The benchmark price for Fraser Valley detached homes in October was $505,759, down 0.3 per cent compared to September and three per cent higher compared to $491,128 in October 2009. The benchmark price of Fraser Valley townhouses in October was $319,058, a 0.9 per cent decrease compared to September and a 2.2 per cent increase compared to October 2009 when it was $312,339. Year-over-year, the benchmark price of apartments increased 0.2 per cent going from $240,048 in October 2009 to $240,542 last month and 0.4 per cent higher compared to September 2010.

Born and raised in Surrey, I moved to Abbotsford in 1985 and grew to love the community. My roots and commitments in the Fraser Valley became even stronger when I married Ingrid and we started a family. With over 20 years experience in sales and marketing, my next challenge was entering real estate. This career plunge, now several years ago, has brought me growth, relationships, and the career satisfaction of a job well done beyond my dreams. My relationships with my clients are of the utmost importance to me. I am committed to providing the care, understanding, service, and attention they deserve. Accountability, availability, opportunity, and results for my clients are the core of my business. I am a self-confessed “car guy” and have been racing, restoring, and appreciating all kinds of vehicles since the day I brought home my driver’s license. Over the years I noticed how difficult it can be to find the right property for “toys”, from cars to boats to recreational vehicles. I decided to dedicate part of my business to specializing in “Real Estate for Car Guys” and everyone looking for unique properties, garages and shops in the Fraser Valley. Some get convalescent fee break Jeff NAGEL Black Press
Some convalescent care patients deemed to be in financial hardship aren’t paying the province’s controversial new $29.40 per day fee for room and board while they recover from a hospital stay. Fraser Health spokesman Roy Thorpe said hardship waivers have so far been granted to 30 patients, or close to 10 per cent of the 315 patients admitted to convalescent care units since April 19, when the new fees took effect. Only one patient who requested a waiver has been denied and in most cases the waivers eliminated the fee altogether, Thorpe said. Patients who request a waiver must provide financial statements. There is no income cutoff to be eligible – the health authority instead judges the patients’ financial ability to pay based on a combination of their income, rent, medical and other costs. Critics of the fees say they cause stress to the patients – most of whom are over 75 – and might even contravene the Canada Health Act. “Seniors cannot afford it,” said Alice Edge, co-chair of the B.C. Health Coalition. “If people are receiving medically necessary treatment or care, user fees should not be introduced.” Convalescent care is for patients who have been discharged from hospital but need more time to recover under supervised

care, provided in several residential care homes around the region. There are concerns some patients will try to go home sooner than they should because of the fees or else may refuse to go into convalescent care and remain in hospital, occupying beds needed for acute patients and contributing to hospital congestion. Edge said calls began to pour in to the coalition since August as bills started to go out and more people became aware of the new charges. “I think it’s inappropriate,” North Delta businessman Firth Bateman told the Fraser Health board Nov. 2. “Can we not be more creative about bringing money and resources into the health care system than simply slapping a toll on that very unfairly hits people who can’t afford to pay?” Patients who don’t pay their bill could be chased by a collection agency, but Fraser Health officials say those who don’t want to pay won’t be denied care. “Patients are never discharged from hospital because they refuse to go to a convalescent care unit where they’ll be subject to the convalescent care fee,” Thorpe said. He was unable to estimate the total of bills sent to patients in Fraser Health so far. But since patients stay in convalescent care an average of seven weeks, the payments could add up to at least $1,400 per patient – worth more than $400,000 to Fraser Health to date. Health minister Kevin Falcon has continued to maintain the fees are an appropriate and reasonable contribution to room and board costs. There are convalescent care units in Langley, Surrey, White Rock, Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

tion in a trade for Heat leading scorer Jason Jaffray over the summer, called his goal “a monkey off my back.” Breen called his “a lucky bounce.” “Coach said that if we don’t have a play, just throw it on net, and I did that as hard as I could,” he said. In the shootout, the Heat (9-60-1) got goals from Jon Rheault, Cameron and Greg Nemisz, while Cody Almond was the lone Houston shooter to solve Leland Irving. ICE CHIPS: Q Heat head coach Jim Playfair added a new member to his team’s leadership group. Defenceman Joe Piskula wore an ‘A’ on his jersey Tuesday, joining Cunning and Matt Keith as assistant captains. Playfair is still waiting to name a captain. Q The Heat now hit the road for a five-game cross-continent trip, beginning Friday in Rhode Island against the Providence Bruins.

So similar were the storylines, the ink-stained sportswriters in the press box might have been able to cut and paste Monday’s summary and get away with it, had they been so inclined. “We came from behind both games, and we just seemed to stick with it,” commented Heat forward Bryan Cameron, who notched Tuesday’s game-
winner in the shootout. “It’s a great feeling.” The Heat’s 27th-ranked penalty kill dug the team a hole on Tuesday, as Houston’s Jarod Palmer and Robbie Earl scored man-advantage goals to stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes. The Heat got on the board early in the third, when Logan MacMillan tipped a point shot past Houston goalie Anton Khudobin. Chris Breen knotted the score at the 13:33 mark, when his shoot-in from just past centre took an odd bounce over Khudobin’s pad. The freakaccident goal was reminiscent of the one Detroit Red Wings blueliner Nicklas Lidstrom scored on Vancouver Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier in the 2002 NHL playoffs. Those third-period tallies marked the first career AHL goals for both MacMillan and Breen. MacMillan, who joined the Calgary Flames organiza-

The CBC women (0-3) dropped both their matches, falling in four sets to Camosun and in three sets to VIU. Q The Cascades men (2-1) split their weekend set, falling in three sets to VIU on Friday before bouncing back with a four-set win over Camosun on Saturday. Ryan Koenig’s 13 kills paced UFV against the Chargers, while Justin Jansen and Aaron Flanagan had 11 apiece. The UFV women (1-2) followed the same pattern as the men, losing to to VIU before beating Camosun for the team’s first victory of the season. Q The Bearcats basketball teams opened the regular season on the road in Victoria, where they were swept by Camosun. The CBC men lost 81-66 on Friday and 95-78 on Saturday. Their best shot at a win came in the opener, where they built an early 15-point lead, but they unraveled in the second quarter due to foul trouble. On the women’s side, the ’Cats were bounced 92-34 on Friday and 92-20 on Saturday.
The Columbia Bible College Bearcats and University of the Fraser Valley Cascades renew their crosstown volleyball rivalry on Thursday evening. The ’Cats welcome the Cascades to Columbia Place for a doubleheader, with the women beginning at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 7:45 p.m. The men’s game figures to be especially compelling, as both local teams are ranked among the top 10 in the nation. The Cascades men are No. 7 in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings, while the Bearcats are No. 10. Q The Bearcat men’s volleyballers are coming off an extremely successful weekend at home, as they swept a pair of games against the Camosun Chargers and the Vancouver Island University Mariners. Will Quiring led the way for the Bearcats, who improved to 2-1 on the season, racking up 20 kills in Friday’s five-set win over Camosun and notching 13 more in Saturday’s straight-sets victory over VIU.

The Abbotsford Falcons community football program wrapped up the regular season on a winning note, as all four local squads posted weekend victories. The Falcons atoms wrapped up a perfect 10-0 record with a 40-18 victory over the Chilliwack Red Giants. Zach Langfield, Noah Nairn and Luke Szmutko found the end zone in the win, while Riley Bennett, Gavin Smith, Jalem Catlin and Haidyn Baumgartner had big games on the defensive side. The peewee Falcons won a nail-
biter over the Giants, 22-14, as quarterback John Madigan threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Dawson Davis. Reese Morrison and Taylor Orchison also scored majors. The Abbotsford junior bantams edged Chilliwack 16-14 in a defensive battle. The Falcons rallied back from a 14-0 deficit, and won the game on a safety with three minutes remaining. The combined Abby-Mission bantam squad closed out the regular season with a 21-6 victory over Meadow Ridge.

amily exercise is now a part of the Hallams daily routine. The Mission family has been shaping up over the past seven weeks as part of a three-month fitness challenge with the Abbotsford News. After the initial shock to their lifestyle, the self-confessed “fast food junkies” are finally settling into their new workout program and making healthier food choices. The Hallams are learning to replace sugars and saturated fats with more fruits and vegetables. “Everybody’s still on board and it’s been going well,” said Donna Hallam. “In the beginning it was a little more of a challenge, but as we continue with our workouts we

She provides time management counselling and creates an action plan that meets the individual needs of clients. As the weather continues to get colder and the days get darker, finding the energy to head outside for daily walks is sometimes difficult. For the Hallams, focusing on the end goal keeps them motivated. The fitness challenge wraps up in six weeks. “I think it’s easy just to give up and throw in the towel,” said Donna. “But if you can really motivate yourself, think positively and encourage each other, anything is possible. We’re very committed now to maintaining our lifestyle and making this a part of our daily life.”

How is your relationship with your mirror? Do you approach it with your tummy sucked in, shoulders back, and never, never from the side? Or perhaps you avoid your reflection all together? Many women feel so uncomfortable with their bodies that they go to extraordinary efforts to cover up. Some women even manage to ensure that their partners never see their bodies uncovered. Magazines, TV and now the Internet constantly provide us with examples of the “perfect female form.” Yet, life gets in the way despite all our good intentions. Pregnancies and weight fluctuations result in the loss of abdominal muscle tone, excessive skin, stretch marks and unwanted fat accumulations. In many cases even turning to diet and exercise cannot remove all the marks of time and a life fully lived. But do not despair. Face your mirror full on and consider your options. One option is an Abdominoplasty. This is a surgical
Do you approach your mirror with dread? procedure that is commonly referred to as a tummy tuck. It is a procedure that is highly successful on well selected patients. The procedure removes excess skin and fat and the abdominal muscles are reinforced. Liposuction is often used in combination with abdominoplasty, allowing fat to be removed from the hips and flanks as well. This improves the appearance of the entire trunk. The waist, the hips, the flanks and the abdomen are reduced. Even “back fat” that protrudes below the bra line can be removed. Abdominoplasy and
liposuction result in permanent changes in the patient’s abdomen. Excess skin and fat are permanently removed. The body has a finite number of fat cells (these expand and shrink as weight is gained and lost) so that once fat cells are removed from a region they can no longer play a role in weight gain in that area. A tummy tuck can help restore your figure to the one you had years ago. Women find they feel considerably more confident about their body image after surgery. Full recovery from the surgical procedure varies
between two to four weeks. If you would like to find out more about abdominoplasty and liposuction, and whether you are a good candidate for this procedure, talk to your physician, or phone a plastic surgeon’s office and their staff can guide you in accessing further information and making an appointment for a consultation with a plastic surgeon. There are also higher risks of cataracts, glaucoma and nerve palsies with diabetes. It is therefore very important for people with diabetes to maintain their blood sugar level within a healthy, stable range. Also annual or bi-annual visits to your eye care provider are required to ensure early detection and thus protect your eyes from vision loss.

Keep your kids healthy during the holidays Winter is upon us, and with it comes the return of cold and flu season. For the parents of the world, this means the annual challenge of keeping kids healthy through a season that’s often as hazardous as it is hectic. In early winter, when colds and flu first start to circulate, parents are commonly overwhelmed by the holiday season. Once the holidays have passed, the temperatures drop significantly and cold and flu season hits full swing. While there’s no way parents can guarantee their kids won’t succumb to the occasional cold this winter, there are steps parents can take to help lessen kids’ risk. Q Encourage exercise. Like their adult counterparts, kids tend to live a much more sedentary lifestyle once winter begins. Colder temperatures outside and less available hours of sunlight make it difficult to spend quality time outdoors. However, when the weather permits, parents should encourage kids to spend at least 30 minutes exercising outdoors during the winter. Doing so helps boost immunity and, contrary to popular belief, the cold weather does not cause cold

Abbotsford’s You Say Party (seen here performing in Jubilee park) is currently touring across Europe. The group will return home in January.

The Indie rock band formed in 2003 out of a bike gang known as the Smoking Spokes. Seven years later, the group has built up quite a resume with three albums and an impressive tour schedule across North America and Europe. You Say Party recently embarked on a seven-week tour, and highlights include stops in London, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Vienna, Prague, Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen. “Ultimately wherever we go we find people just want to dance, sing along, clap and shout and have fun,” said bass player Stephen O’Shea. “Because of the long drives across Canada and the time it takes to tour it all, we’re used to being out on the

The band also has plans to finally tour the United States next year. You Say Party has been banned from performing in the country since 2006, after heading south for a major tour without proper work visas. “We’re all very fortunate and extremely appreciative of the opportunity to be where we are,” said O’Shea. “We love every opportunity we have to perform, and still don’t mind loading the gear into those Abbotsford basements to play shows for the fans that got us started in the first place.”

Protect winter roses It is amazing that many rose bushes are still producing buds and blossoms. If you can pick the odd rosebud for indoor enjoyment, it is like capturing a bit of summer. Any time after midNovember, however, we should be prepared for a cold spell. Winterizing roses is important, not only from an appearance standpoint, but also for their survival should we have severe cold outflow winds. Floribundas, hybrid teas and grandifloras are all treated in much the same manner at this time of year. Using a sharp, clean pair of hand shears, cut all the stems back to approximately 2½ to 3 feet in height. Make all your cuts on an angle to prevent water from seeping into the stems. Next, take out any obvious dead wood, which often is an ideal

Gardens overwinter hideout for both insects and disease. It might also be a good idea to use a little pruning paint wherever you make a cut to prevent borers from getting inside. I would also pick off all the leaves, especially the disease infected ones and rake up any old decomposed material around the base of the plants. When this is all finished, your roses will actually look quite smart in your winter garden. Climbing roses need to be pruned quite differently. Choose four or five of the youngest and best canes, and prune them back anywhere from four to six feet. Tie the canes to a trellis or arbour to

Even though your roses look dormant for the winter, their roots are still developing. To protect the bud union, cover their base well with a 12 inch layer of bark mulch or good garden compost. This protective covering will
