“Open Mike” will be the theme of Mike de Jong’s campaign for premier, as the Abbotsford West MLA launched his candidacy at a press conference at the Abbotsford Airport on Wednesday morning. Immediately after the local announcement, de Jong flew to Victoria, and today (Thursday) he will be in Kamloops as he begins a tour of the province. “IknowBritishColumbians have ideas, and we have to listen to them,” he said. On a stage at the newly renovated international arrivals section of the Abbotsford airport, de Jong spoke to a crowd of approximately 400 people that included local politicians, business people, the media and many Liberals who cheered enthusiastically when prompted. “Anyone heard of the HST?” he asked, as he explained his position on the unpopular tax. De Jong favours holding the HST referendum sooner, and said the government should conduct public dialogue about the tax “that we

didn’t engage in, in the first place.” He told reporters: “We went to the town fair with a product we told people was a thoroughbred horse, and they decided it was a pig. And I don’t know that it’s going to make much difference putting lipstick on the pig...” On the minimum wage,

But he added: “I am proud to have been a member of the Gordon Campbell government for the last 10 years.” De Jong has resigned as attorney general and government house leader, assuring his supporters he will campaign full-time. “I want you to know I am dedicated to the task 24-7.” Conspicuous by their absence were any members the Liberal I know British of caucus. Hospital theft suspect.

The man looks through some items on a table at the foot of a bed in the hospital hallway. He then walks away, but returns less than a minute later. This time, he lifts up a purse and leaves with it. Now, Abbotsford Police are trying to identify the man, using hospital surveillance video. The incident occurred Oct. 26 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH), but Const. Ian MacDonald said it has taken this long to release the information because police had to first exhaust all efforts to identify the suspect. This included having the video viewed by Abbotsford Police, other

law enforcement agencies, and Fraser Health, which operates ARH. MacDonald said the purse was stolen from a 20-year-old woman, who was sleeping on a bed in the hallway while waiting for space in a room. She was prepared for a stay, and had left her cash, valuables and ID at home. The purse contained mostly makeup and clothing, MacDonald said. However, the suspect had no way of knowing what the purse contained, and his behaviour is despicable because he took advantage of someone who was vulnerable, MacDonald said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Abbotsford Mayor George Peary threw his support behind the local candidate for premier. “Mike and I go back a long way,” said Peary at the press conference, explaining that de Jong was the W.J. Mouat student council president when Peary was principal. De Jong was a local lawyer and school board trustee before beating Social Credit matriarch Grace McCarthy in a byelection in 1994. Peary listed Abbotsford’s airport, hospital, university and interchanges, saying “all of these things have been possible in this community because of Mike de Jong.” “His roots are firmly planted in the fertile farm fields of Matsqui Prairie,” said Peary.

Facility halfway to fundraising goal Neil CORBETT Black Press

With a $1.5-million contribution from the province, the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Abbotsford is now halfway to its fundraising goal of $9.75 million. “It’s wonderful to have the government affirm all the work that we do,” said Canuck Place CEO Filomena Nalewajek. The funding was announced on Monday night, at the annual Lighting of the Hospice holiday celebration at the original Canuck Place. Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Colin Hansen made the announcement on behalf of Health Services Minister Kevin Falcon. “With almost half of the children (at Canuck Place) living in the Fraser Health region, a new stand-alone, 10-bed children’s hospice in Abbotsford will best support the expansion of Canuck Place hospice,” said Hansen in a press release. “The expansion supports the specialized care for more than 400 children and teens a year with life-threatening illnesses, as well as their families, throughout B.C.” Continued on A6

International Airport. “And, it is a community that has embraced the idea of a second Canucks Place,” said Nalewajek. “I don’t think I have ever worked in a more receptive, caring, warm community in my life.” Canuck Place is part of the Campus of Care project being developed on Marshall Road, next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. Also included are the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s adult hospice and resource centre, and Matthew’s House, a long-term respite facility for children with chronic illnesses. Given the state of the economy and economic pressures on the government, Nalewajek said “we’re very fortunate that we’re getting any money right now.” She added that Canuck Place will be approaching the province again when the new facility opens, to ask for funds toward operating costs. The City of Abbotsford has contributed land for the project, which will be shared with the two other organizations in a campus of care model. The city signed a 99-year lease with the

group for $10. Operations at the new Canuck Place hospice will be phased in over a three-to-fiveyear period, beginning with a consultation team. An outpatient clinic and support groups will be followed by four to five beds open 24-hours a day, working up to a fully operational 10-bed children’s hospice. “Canuck Place has helped our family through what was the most difficult time we have ever faced,” said Janet Homeniuk, bereaved mother of Andrew and chair of the Family Advisory Council. “I am so glad that they are expanding their services, so that they can help more families like us get the support and services that made a huge difference to us.” Established in November 1995, Canuck Place was the first free-standing children’s hospice in North America, and just the sixth in the world. Services include 24/7 physician and nursing support and consultative services, end-of-life care, pain and symptom manrespite agement, care, school, music and play therapy, recreation opportunities and counselling.

is believed to be linked to the 58-year-old man and other cases, including one on Nov. 19. That involved a 39-year-old woman who was arrested after attempting to obtain $2,000 from a cheque-cashing business. A suspicious employee reported her after she tried to make a debit-type withdrawal from the account for a Kamloops business by falsely reporting that she worked for the company. MacDonald said suspects in cases such as this not only use information from stolen ID, but obtain personal details about their victims through social networking sites and mail theft. They also might call friends or family, saying they know the victim and just want to find out how the person is doing. They then obtain information similar to what a bank might use to confirm identity – for example, their mother’s maiden name. Anyone with information in the Susan Jones case or similar incidents is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604859-5225 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

When the thief drove off in Donny’s 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette on Sunday morning, he wasn’t sure he’d ever see the van in one piece again. But the furniture store manager and his wife, Jenn, were shocked to see the vehicle parked in their driveway Tuesday night, with their set of car and house keys left at the front door. The car thief found his way back using the GPS that was left in the van, and most likely left the scene in a second vehicle driven by an accomplice. “That was just bizarre. I don’t know what prompted him to risk coming back when police were looking for him,” said Donny, who didn’t want his surname published. “It was straight out of a movie.” It began Sunday morning after police received reports that a pickup stolen from Coquitlam was likely in Abbotsford. Police tracked down the suspect, who fled in the vehicle and failed to stop even after two spike belts damaged three of the tires. He finally abandoned the pickup and ran into a neighbourhood near Clearbrook and Marshall roads. Police, who did not pursue the vehicle due to strict regulations

about car chases, lost track of the suspect. Meanwhile, Donny had entered the garage of his home in preparation to leave for work. Jenn and their two kids were in the house. Just as the garage door was rising, a frantic man ran up to Donny, yelling “I don’t want to do this! Give me your keys! You don’t understand!” The man grabbed the keys, raced to the van and got into the driver’s seat. Donny ran to the driver’s side, trying to open the door, and saying he would give the man a ride. The suspect locked the vehicle. Donny yelled for Jenn to call 911 and she appeared in the garage just as the suspect was squealing away in their vehicle. The couple immediately reported the theft to police. They did the same upon the return of their van. The unusual circumstances have even police perplexed. “It’s really unusual. We’re scratching our heads on this one, too,” said Const. Ian MacDonald. The van was taken by police to be examined for evidence. Donny and Jenn changed all the locks on their house, wary that the thief might have made copies of the keys he temporarily had in his possession. They are renting a vehicle until they get their van back from police.

Now it’s up to judges Getting tougher on crime means more prisoners, says the federal government, which this week announced nearly $80 million in funding to expand prison facilities in the Valley. Many people will have welcomed that news. Abbotsford in particular has endured two uncomfortable years as the murder capital of the nation, watching as ultra-violent gangs fought and shot it out on public streets for control of turf and the drug trade. Seeing the Bacon brothers put behind bars on a series of charges, including murder, was an important police victory to regain a sense of community security and freedom. We’d venture that a great majority of residents would be more than pleased to see the rest of these gangsters rounded up and locked up. Some critics of incarceration policies will maintain that putting more people in prison does not necessarily

translate to lower crime rates and safer communities. A prime example, they would argue, is the United States, which has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, yet one of the worst crime rates. There’s truth in that, particularly if viewed in the light of America’s ineffective war on drugs, which generates waves of low-level offenders. However, far more unacceptable was the recent prime directive to the Canadian criminal justice system, which was to avoid long sentences, or any incarceration at all, because the nation’s jails were overflowing. Fortunately, that appalling policy seems to be changing. Law-abiding citizens want to see justice being done, particularly as it applies to repeat offenders, and heinous crimes of violence. Now we just need the country’s judges to hand down sentences that will utilize that extra room in prison.

How Gordon Campbell was toppled Tom

B.C. Views A hatchet job. Sloppy. That was the initial reaction from Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett to my column last week on his noisy departure from the B.C. Liberal cabinet. Reviewing those events with Bennett and other sources, I realize I not only made a factual error, I missed a significant story about the end of Gordon Campbell’s leadership. Why did Bennett publicly break with Campbell, first to criticize his sweeping reorganization of resource ministries, and then to call for Campbell to go? Was he upset about losing responsibility for mining? Was this another hot-tempered lapse in judgment, like his insulting email to a local critic that prompted Bennett to resign as minister of state for mining in 2007? No. It was a calmly calculated rebellion, a solo effort to push Campbell out before

it was too late for the B.C. Liberal Party. I called Bennett a “political suicide bomber.” He prefers “change agent.” Step one was a carefully timed call to Vancouver Sun reporter Jonathan Fowlie to blast the resource ministry shuffle, which Bennett views as a disaster of oneman rule. “I knew the premier was doing his TV statement, I think it was the next day,” Bennett told me. “And I figured, I have to make a statement about this now, and put some pressure on the premier.” Bennett knew this alone could get him bounced out of cabinet. But with NDP leader Carole James under fire for kicking Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson out of caucus without discussion, and Campbell’s TV address pending, he expected to survive for a while. Step two was an appearance on Sean Leslie’s CKNW talk show a few days later, saying Campbell should step down immediately. In both interviews he was careful to be “respectful” of Campbell, but this was another clear breach of cabinet solidarity. He was fired from cabinet Nov. 17, and launched his attack on Campbell’s “bullying.”

Bennett says his decision to sacrifice his cherished job as energy minister began on Sept. 14. That’s the day a B.C. Liberalcontrolled legislative committee opted for a province-wide vote on repealing the harmonized sales tax. Campbell immediately announced that the government would accept a simple majority of those who vote, much less than

I called Bennett a ‘political suicide bomber.’ He prefers ‘change agent.’ the Recall and Initiative Act requires. The B.C. Liberals had held a two-day caucus retreat in Kelowna, “and that option was never, ever discussed,” Bennett said. “I just thought, if this guy stays, we are cooked. The B.C. Liberal government will never get elected again.” His solo mission followed at least one group effort to push Campbell towards

the door. Bennett says he was one of 10 MLAs who agreed to sign a letter, politely suggesting Campbell bow out at the party’s Penticton convention Nov. 19-20. An intermediary, a former cabinet minister, got involved. Bennett said the intermediary was told some MLAs were prepared to sit as independents when the house resumes in February if Campbell was still premier. When Campbell announced he was stepping down, he gave no date. Bennett says he and other fed-up MLAs became concerned that Campbell might stay until the HST vote next fall, or longer. The party has since scrambled to reschedule its convention, change its voting structure to give rural areas a chance (Bennett says that too was his initiative, last July) and select a new leader on Feb. 26. Mission accomplished. Correction: I wrote last week that Bennett prematurely disclosed a revenue sharing offer for the Prosperity mine. Provincial negotiators had made that offer privately more than a year earlier. My apologies.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Thursday, December 2, 2010

‘Safety of Canadians,’ loud and clear The parting words, “The safety of Canadians comes first,” spoken by Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, in his speech at a press conference at the Pacific Institution Treatment Centre in Abbotsford last Monday, sounded like music in my ears. Both minister Toews and our own Ed Fast, chair of the standing committee on justice and human rights, skillfully explained the government’s law and order agenda, and the decision to add 362 beds at local prisons. The government’s effort to keep violent repeat offenders behind bars and create a system to treat the mental and behavioral needs of others, is praiseworthy indeed. Does this mean that many of us take great joy in watching violent repeat offenders put behind bars, and

throw the key away? Of course not. Each one of these incarcerated human beings is someone’s child, or relative. I suppose to some people it all comes down to the simple saying, “Have a heart, will you?” But then the same must be said in regards to brutalized victims and the far too often young children who were made to suffer at the offenders’ evil actions. I believe every soul on Earth is meant to live in peace and happiness. But whatever triggered these folks to commit awful, life-altering criminal activities, they too must face the consequences of their actions. I wish that some day soon such incarcerated human beings could be

offered a chance to contribute to society in some positive way by making furniture, greenhouse gardening, for starters, perhaps. Some other countries make their prisoners earn their own keep at least. But for now, Vic Toews and Ed Fast deserve sincere thanks for their hard work in landing this new venture in fighting crime. Yes, finally the welcome words, “The safety of Canadians comes first” were spoken loud and clear by sincere, compassionate folks who mean business. Thank you both so very, very much from someone who has seen the awful deep suffering of too many victims of heinous crimes. Gertie Pool

Scandalous payment to chiefs With some validity it has been said that the early explorers who landed on our eastern shores first fell on their knees and then on the aborigines. Times have changed. Canadian taxpayers are now the ones being abused. Consider the following: Federal figures obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation reveal that in 2008/09 at least 82 native chiefs and band councillors

made more money than the approximately $300,000 earned by Prime Minister Stephen Harper; at least 200, 18 in B.C., were paid more than their provincial premiers. The misuse of taxpayers’ money boggles the mind. For example, in the small Mi’kmaq Glooscap Reserve in Nova Scotia, the three councillors were each paid more than $209,000 in salary, honoraria, etc. plus

additional “other remuneration,” according to Canada’s Department of Indian Affairs. How much “other remuneration?” For one of the three Glooscap councillors the total income reached $978,000. Since this income is tax free, it equals $1.8 million in taxable income. Is governing this reserve so onerous? The Glooscap Reserve numbers 304 mem-

bers but only 87 actually live on the reserve. While most of Canada’s more than 600 First Nations bands do not tolerate such skulduggery, it is widespread. Is it too much to assert that Canadian taxpayers expect more responsible management of taxes paid? I call upon our Members of Parliament to remedy this scandalous abuse. John H. Redekop

City management the concern

Re: Letter by Rod Marr, Nov. 25. Yes, I have attended more than one function at the AESC, including a Heat game, and may do so in the future. The more people who attend, the less weight on the taxpayer. Many citizens gave reasoned arguments as to location and management of the AESC before construction. A handful of concerned taxpayers are likely the only reason the contract of the present management company is 10 years instead of 20. As far as constructive suggestions are concerned, at the recent budget meetings (I attended all of them), I gave a written and oral submission on what our leaders might want to look for when considering private partnerships for water supply. At council meetings I have asked mayor and council to be judicious with their spending choices. I have underlined that any borrowing comes with a cost – an amortized loan costs taxpayers several times over. I have suggested that we moderate expectations when it comes to “sister cities” – I am particularly put off by the idea that we need one or two more sister cities.

Police shooting of dog cruel and uncalled for

Other concerned citizens have much more to offer. I have a friend with her masters in public policy. She has made many concrete suggestions in person to council, and recently emailed studies on private partnerships to our city leaders. The unfortunate reality is that – in spite of saying they want input from citizens – there is little evidence that we are actually heard. Mr. Marr, you suggested I may want to attend a function at the AESC. May I suggest you attend a council meeting? Perhaps you will have the opportunity to hear organizations who keep people off our streets asking for tax relief. In the past when this tax relief has been provided, it has come with the proviso not to expect the same in future years. Yet visits to sister cities are considered a civic necessity. Please do not make the mistake that those of us who actually watch what is going on have anything against Abbotsford. We chose it for our home for good reason. Our concern is with how our city is being managed. Regina Dalton

I am sick and tired of reading about the Abbotsford Police shooting dogs and getting a slap on the wrist. Just recently they have murdered another animal because the residence is known to be a problem. Why not Taser? Gun happy, that’s why. Absolutely disgusting and I really call upon the officer in charge to train his people properly.

Do you not think the police dog would charge if its master were being manhandled? Of course, however I would certainly not want the dog shot. How cruel, how mean, how totally uncalled for, and if the police are not prepared to handle a residence check without shooting, unless shot at, they should stay in their office and do paperwork. Diane Davies

Regulate headlights In the last year there has been a great increase in the amount of after-market high intensity (HID) headlights installed in vehicles that are designed to use regular halogen bulbs. Unfortunately, nearly every person who installs these HIDs in their vehicles fails to realize that this is no ordinary headlight; it must have a projector in front of it to control the intense light. When this extremely bright light is shone too high, it is dangerously blinding to oncoming traffic. All types of vehicles with this light can be dangerous, but high pickup trucks are particularly hazardous. It’s time to make a few rules about these fake HIDs and make the nighttime roads safer. It’s only a matter of time before something serious will happen because someone is momentarily blinded by these headlights. Jason Maljaars

The toughest cowboys in the country are returning to Abbotsford for another eight-second showdown in the dirt. Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Canada will take over the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre March 25-26, 2011. The weekend will see contenders take a wild ride on bulls weighing almost 2,000 pounds. Only one cowboy will claim the coveted event title. About 35 riders competed in the Canadian Cup Series event in February. “These are athletes,” said Michaella Petrick, AESC director of marketing. “To be able to sit on this 2,000 pound machine and not have the ability to control it, it’s pretty amazing and it’s a pretty big adrenaline rush.” All riders are vying for cash, which helps them qualify for the PBR Canadian Cup National Finals. The person with the most money by the end of the year will be named champion. The top-ranked rider will go on to represent Canada at the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas. General admission is $20, but fans now have the opportunity to get close to the action with the new VIP ticket. For $60, you can watch the show from the best seats in the arena and have access to the floor party with the PBR. Tickets go on sale Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. They are available at www. abbotsfordcentre.ca, the box office, or 1-866977-2372. The action gets underway at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

Kariton Art Gallery is hosting a grand opening this weekend for its new art boutique. The shop was launched in July to provide a year-round retail outlet for local crafters. Over the past few months, the list of participating vendors has multiplied. The boutique now features a rotation of works from 30 to 50 artists at any given time. Shelves are stocked with a wide range of handmade items including jewelry, pottery, woodwork, art cards and sculptures. There’s also an assortment of CDs, books, hand-bound journals and other stationery items. A new exhibit showcasing five emerging artists also opens this weekend at the gallery. With a range of contemporary styles and techniques, Joel Libin,

Meaghan Van Dyk, administrator and facility manager for the Abbotsford Arts Council, places a bowl created by Abbotsford potter Molly Magid. An official opening of the new boutique in Kariton Gallery takes place on Dec 3/4. It will feature the creations of 50 local artists. Ian Love, Desneige Meyer, Sean Nurcombe and Jeff Stackhouse will offer visitors a chance to view the world through their eyes. “It’s pushing the boundaries a little more of what people consider art and look-

ing at different art forms,” explained Meaghan Van Dyk, arts council administrator and facility manager, adding that many of the pieces go beyond traditional canvas and paint. The exhibit runs Dec. 3 to Jan. 5, with

an opening reception taking place on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Coffee and tea will be served. The grand opening takes place Dec. 3-4 during gallery hours. Kariton Art Gallery is located at 2387 Ware St.

Let Youth Belong Contest winner announced

Actors in a series of public service announcements produced in Abbotsford gathered at a media launch on Nov. 23. The clips were part of Let Youth Belong, an initiative developed by Abbotsford Community Services.

A b b o t s f o r d Community Services (ACS) has announced the winner of the Let Youth Belong Better World Contest. Alyssa Harms-Wiebe from Abbotsford won $1,000, a $100 gift card for Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, a one-month pass to the Abbotsford and Matsqui recreation centres, and a $300 pizza bowling party at

Galaxy Bowl. The contest was launched to bring awareness and help to youth affected by bullying, discrimination, racism, socioeconomic status, and lack of support at home. One of HarmsWiebe’s ideas was called Someone Else’s Shoes, a day in which people would be encouraged to alter their appearance – for example, dress like a punk or a pregnant teen. Her other idea was We’re Gonna Sing ‘til Discrimination Ends, a coffee shop-style night in which students compose and perform songs about discrimination. The clips were done using local actors in cooperation with the Abbotsford school district and Legal Grounds Coffeehouse, which provided space for filming. Trial on child porn charge by Vikki HOPES and Robert FREEMAN Abbotsford News

A three-day trial is expected to conclude today (Thursday) in Chilliwack Supreme Court for an Abbotsford man charged with making child pornography available. Christopher Robert Lamb, 27, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of child pornography, while a charge of possession for the purpose of distribution was stayed by the Crown. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of making child porn available through his use of the LimeWire file sharing program. Lamb was arrested in March 2009 as one of 50 people caught in a nation-wide investigation into Internet child sex abuse. Project Salvo was the largest co-ordinated investigation into child pornography in Canada, with police in several provinces executing search warrants and laying charges. Abbotsford Police Det. Shane Savinkoff testi-

fied in court about the reaction from Lamb when police showed up on March 25, 2009 at his residence on Sherwood Crescent with a search warrant and explained what it was for. “He went pale. He went very dry-mouthed, significant enough that I made note of it. It was difficult for him to speak because his mouth became so dry.” At the time, Lamb lived in a three-bedroom basement suite that he shared with his brother, sister-in-law and their child. Sgt. Randy Riehl testified that police seized a desktop computer from a bedroom in which Lamb’s wallet was also found and that was later confirmed as belonging to the accused. Savinkoff said Lamb left the home after a loud argument was heard coming from an upstairs room. Police officers were dispatched to follow him, and Lamb was later arrested at an Abbotsford gas station.

Pawsitive Gifts help animals It’s the virtual gift that gives back. With the click of a mouse, the BC SPCA’s Pawsitive Gifts program allows you to buy something special for the animal lover on your list this holiday season, while helping some of B.C.’s most vulnerable creatures. “You can help a dog, a cat, a horse or even a raccoon without ever leaving your house, says Lise Brown, development officer for the BC SPCA. New this year, Pawsitive Gift options include an opportunity to support the work of the BC SPCA’s cruelty investigations team. Dubbed “Protect, Serve and Shelter, this $50 gift goes directly toward the support for cruelty investigations, including enforcement of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, bringing animal abusers to justice and caring for hurt and neglected animals. The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization and does not receive any government funding to conduct nearly 6,000 new cruelty investigations a year. Other Pawsitive Gifts start at $10 and include puppy or dog care for a day, kitten and cat care for a day, horse care for a day, veterinary care of dogs and cats and even care for small, wild and farm animals. Donors who make secure online donations are issued tax receipts by email, which saves the BC SPCA the cost of producing and mailing tax receipts. Donors can either choose to send a personalized electronic card to the gift’s recipient, or print a card that they can present to the recipient in person. For more information and ideas for the animal lovers on your gift list this holiday season, visit pawsitivegifts.ca. For more information about the BC SPCA, visit spca.bc.ca.

Purchasing power of BCDailyDeals

drfetuhybgndfghjklqwertyuioaqghjmranrek

Tapping into the power of group buying has become a popular online practice. Joining the trend is Black Press Digital (a division of Black Press Ltd.), which recently launched BCDailyDeals.com. The new website uses the power of group purchasing, or team buying, to provide a place for consumers to find deals on local food, entertainment, travel, beauty and more. By offering Metro Vancouver advertisers local media exposure, BCDailyDeals is able to secure discounted deals for customers. Advertisers are guaranteed a certain number of customers for their investment, as consumers only get the deal if a specified number of people buy within the available time period. BCDailyDeals. com will feature one advertiser for a limited time period, offering a product or service that is deeply discounted by 50-90 per cent. A minimum number of people must buy to activate the offer for all buyers;

ize 1,000 Prrtwork st A e for for Be $ 1000 Priz tory

thus, consumers are encouraged to share with friends, family and social network, via Twitter, Facebook or email links. Consumers can subscribe to email alerts

to be notified about exclusive discounts throughout Metro Vancouver, and eventually, BCDailyDeals plans to expand to Vancouver Island and the B.C. Interior.

Tell us a story about a child who lives with epilepsy and has a seizure. Tell us how it feels, what happens before, during and after the seizure. Tell us what to do, what are the first-aid steps we should follow. Tell us in your own words. Tell us how young children react to someone who has a seizure. Tell us what you think people should know about epilepsy. Through drawings, show us what happens during a seizure.

The Center for Epilepsy and Seizure Education presents this contest for the creation of a children’s book about epilepsy. It is made possible through a generous grant from the Rotary Club of Abbotsford. This contest is exclusive to all students of The Abbotsford School District and students attending any post-secondary institution or private school as long as at least one parent resides in the City of Abbotsford or the boundaries of The Abbotsford School District.

In Brief FOOTBALL ALL-STARS

Mouat, Yale fall just short of upset wins at UFV’s Valley Battle

Desmond Bassi and Jake Heathcote of the W.J. Mouat Hawks and Daniel McCutcheon of the Rick Hansen Hurricanes have earned all-province honours. Bassi, a senior wideout, and Heathcote, a Grade 11 linebacker, were named to the AAA all-star team. Bassi led the AAA circuit with 38 receptions, and his 552 yards were fourth overall. Heathcote was second in B.C. in sacks (12) and third in tackles (89). Hansen senior receiver McCutcheon cracked the AA all-star squad after leading the province with 43 catches for 673 yards.

Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

On Monday evening at the University of the Fraser Valley, the W.J. Mouat Hawks and Yale Lions both demonstrated they’ll be among the province’s elite senior boys basketball teams this season. They also showed they have a long way to go before they’re finished products. On the first night that official high school hoops games could be played, both Abbotsford squads came close to pulling off impressive upsets at the Valley Battle, UFV’s annual AAA boys basketball showcase. Mouat, ranked No. 9 in the province, led the No. 2-ranked R.C. Palmer Griffins of Richmond 56-55 with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. But Palmer made all the key plays down the stretch, and escaped with a 64-59 win. The early game between the No. 4 Terry Fox Ravens of Port Coquitlam and the No. 10 Lions was one of wild momentum swings. Yale held a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Ravens rallied for a 70-67 win. “The bar is set for us now – we know where we have to get to,” Mouat coach Sean Beasley summarized. “We’re still growing, and it’ll take some time. But we’re happy to come out and face this kind of competition early in the season.” When Beasley says his team is still growing, he must mean it metaphorically, because the Hawks are already one of the tallest teams in B.C. this season, trotting out the likes of 6’9” Jamin Lockert, 6’7” Sunny Johal and 6’6” Nick Howden. On Monday, Mouat’s size advantage aided its comeback from a seven-point deficit through three quarters to briefly seize the lead, but the smaller Palmer

Meyer joins Heat; Volpatti escapes suspension The Abbotsford Heat, bruised and battered as they are, received a much-needed roster reinforcement on Tuesday. Left winger Stefan Meyer was re-assigned by the Calgary Flames, and was to meet the Heat in Hamilton, where they faced the Bulldogs at

Copps Coliseum on Wednesday evening. That result was unavailable at press time. M e y e r cracked the Flames roster out of training camp this f a l l , and posted two assists, an even plus-minus

rating and 17 penalty minutes in 16 games with the NHL club. At the AHL level, the sixth-year pro has 148 points in 333 AHL games with the Rochester Americans and the San Antonio Rampage. Meyer’s arrival

is a boon to a Heat squad that is missing Mitch Wahl (broken cheekbone), Gaelan Patterson (knee), Cam Cunning (shoulder), Carter Bancks (upper body), John Negrin (knee), Matt Pelech (shoulder), Ryley Grantham (ankle) and Kris Chucko (neck/ head).

Q Manitoba Moose winger Aaron Volpatti will not be suspended for his hit on Wahl, the AHL confirmed Wednesday. Midway through the third period of Saturday’s game at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, Wahl absorbed a check from

Super showing for U16 Mariners

The Abbotsford Mariners U16 boys soccer squad turned in a memorable performance last week at the Super Y League North American Finals in Florida, battling their way to the semifinals. “We wanted to make sure we had no regrets,” Mariners coach Alan Alderson said. “With the way the boys played

and how assertive they were, they made sure of that.” The Abby side opened the tournament last Friday with a 2-1 victory over TSF Academy of Lincoln Park, N.J., with Andy Phillips Jr. notching the winner in injury time. Ramneet Johal and Gurminder Kang scored to

lead Abby to a 2-0 victory over Florida Soccer Alliance of Stamford, Fla. in their second game, with goalie Cody Kloosterboer posting the clean sheet. The locals wrapped up the round robin by battling Nova FC to a 1-1 draw, with Justin Sekhon supplying the Abby goal.

The Abby boys faced Ironbound SC of Newark, N.J. in the semifinals, and dropped a tough 1-0 decision. The New Jersey squad, who went on to win the U16 division title, scored a goal off a set piece just before halftime, and hung on for the win. The Mariners finished with Continued on A24

Atom Falcons fly to football final The Abbotsford Falcons atom football team punched its ticket to the B.C. title game, edging Meadow Ridge 15-8 in Chilliwack on Saturday. In a tight defensive battle, Falcons defenders Zachary Langfield,

Riley Bennett, Gavin Smith, Jalem Catlin, Jeff Vanderwerff and Sam Davenport had excellent performances. The atom Falcons move on to the B.C. title game on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Langley’s McLeod Stadium.

In other action, the local junior bantam and bantam squads fell just short of the B.C. finals. The Falcon JBs fell 42-14 to the Kelowna Dragons, while the combined Abby-Mission bantam team lost 35-27 to the

OBITUARIES

Aug. 28, 1926 - Nov. 19 2010.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Pauline Anderson (nee Thornber) at the family home in Mission BC on Friday, November 19, 2010.

Pauline was born in Victoria, BC and after receiving her early education she went to work at Victoria General Hospital. As a teenager she moved with her family to Vancouver where she would become a nurse’s aid at Vancouver General Hospital during the war years. It was here she met Doug, moved to Hatzic Prairie and devoted her love to raising a family on the farm. According to Pauline’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Send your entries to:

Songs, Strings and Steps present Christmas show South Abbotsford Church will soon resonate with the sounds of Christmas. One hundred local performers are showcasing their musical talents in this year’s presentation of Songs, Strings and Steps: Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child. Show producer Calvin Dyck and artistic designer Sylvia Friesen have put together an evening of music and dance featuring a blend of traditional and contemporary carols. Each piece is accompanied by a PowerPoint backdrop and lighting effects. “It’s a real community celebration,” said Dyck. “It really covers the spirit of Christmas. I think both young and old will be delighted with the variety show.” Music will feature

classics like Sleigh Ride and Silver Bells as well as selections from the movie Polar Express. Guest performers include Shane and Angela Wiebe, sister singers Andrea and Amaris, Mel Bowker, Johannes Weber, Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, and the Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir under the direction of Sonja Hindmarsh and Carmen Fast. A rendition of The Nutcracker’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Meredith Lunsford of Seattle’s ARC Dance Company is also on the program. Songs, Strings and Steps was created in 2001 to provide a fun outlet for youth to express themselves. So far this year, 5,000 people have attended their shows in Abbotsford. Christmas Through

Hemingways Books is pleased to announce two book signings this month. On Sat, Dec 11th, Mr Linc Alexander will sign copies of his latest book “Fire Bomber into Hell”. Linc was one of the pioneers of using converted transport planes to quash forest fires, in fact he eventually wrote the pilot’s manual on the subject. A natural story teller, Mr. Alexander’s engaging story will appeal to pilots and history buffs alike. On Dec. 18th, members of the Lyster family will sign copies of their mother’s history of Canadian War Brides “Most Excellent Citizens”.

Eswyn Lyster interviewed 5,000 War brides and spent the last decade of her life documenting the struggles of the women who followed their Canadian military husbands to a new country. Sadly, Eswyn died before completing the work but led by her eldest son Terry and his wife Carolyn the family rallied to finish the book. A million Canadians have a World War II war bride in their family tree and this book will appeal to them and anyone else interested in a little known piece of 20th century Canadian history. The signing will run from 1-4 on Sat. Dec 18th at the store on Essendene Ave.

Doves released on Bereavement Day a beautiful thing to watch the doves join their flock circling above to fly home together. “It is heart-warming to see such a diverse group of people from all parts of this community sharing their

personal loss with others and knowing they are not alone in their grief journey, Lawson concluded. “By partnering with Henderson’s, we form an even stronger support system in our community to

help the residents of Abbotsford as they navigate through one of the most difficult times in their life. said Balzer.

About 80 family members paid tribute to their deceased loved ones at a memorial dove release event on B.C. Bereavement Day. This event took place recently due to a partnership between Abbotsford Hospice Society (AHS) and Dignity Memorial Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home. Candles were lit by attendees at the entrance to the chapel. Encouraging messages were delivered by AHS spiritual care volunteer Arlene Kropp, AHS bereavement services manager Maryanne Balzer, and Sara Lawson, manager of Henderson’s. Attendees were treated to musical selections by Henderson’s staff member and soloist Crystal Hicks. During the dove release outside the funeral home, family members remembered those they miss by releasing white doves. “We huddled together under umbrellas and a grey sky to honour our loved ones with the dove release, said Lawson. “It is
