“Pocket dialing” and incorrect long distance attempts account for 17 to 20 per cent of all 911 calls made in the city, according to the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). Const. Ian MacDonald said these misdialed calls, which also include children playing with phones and people asking non-emergency questions such as the time, amount to about 1,000 each month in Abbotsford. “No matter what the cause, these draw on APD communications centre resources as we have only so many staff and so many phone lines and impact on the VIDLEIONE time of officers who are often sent ON ws.com to confirm there isn’t an emerabbyne gency,” he said. In Abbotsford, 911 services are handled by E-Comm – the regional emergency communications centre – which reported on Tuesday that more than 100,000 accidental calls were made to 911 last year in Metro Vancouver and surrounding areas. Theatre group sets sail for England’s Gilbert and Sullivan festival Fraser Valley Stage launches H.M.S. Pinafore in Abbotsford April 18-21 Tyler ORTON Contributor
Conflicting schedules, budget constraints and even sudden illnesses haven’t slowed down Fraser Valley Stage in its endeavour to perform on the other side of the world. The Abbotsford-based theatre company began production on H.M.S Pinafore over a year ago in anticipation of the Gilbert and Sullivan International Festival in Buxton, England on Aug. 1. Stage director Pauline Harskamp was originally cast as one of the leads in the Victorian comic opera set on the open seas, but she was thrust into the production’s head role after the first director resigned in early February due to ill health. “I’m really trying to stay true to the original director’s plans for the show,” Harskamp says, adding she’s still playing catch-up before the play hits the stage April 18-21 at Abbotsford Arts Centre. She has the experience needed to pull off such a feat after directing Stranded at Westcliffe last year, an original play she wrote for Fraser Valley Stage. “Once we’re done at the end of April, we’ll get a whole new set of issues to deal with,” Harskamp says, referring to various preparations and a new set of rehearsals required for the trip to the U.K. The stage at the Buxton Opera House is smaller, which means Harskamp will have to work with the actors to adjust their positions and movements. “It’s a really huge undertaking,” Harskamp says. Props and costumes have to be flown to England, along with 42 performers and a small backstage crew. “The actual performance tends to be – after all the months of preparation – just the climax,” she says. The decision to produce this particular play followed the troupe’s desire to enter an international theatre competition. After deciding Buxton’s Gilbert and Sullivan festival was the best option, the group agreed on H.M.S. Pinafore. The play follows the story of forbidden love between different British classes, after Josephine, daughter of

Pauline Harskamp is directing Pinafore for Fraser Valley Stage. reason. “He’s a pompous old twit and I like the funny roles,” he says. “By exercising that high snobbery, that’s where most of the comedy comes in.” The actor is fighting off a case of laryngitis, but he isn’t finding it difficult to go to rehearsals twice a week. “Once you get there and start the lines and the songs, it all comes. Because the way the thing is written, it really puts you in the mood,” Roper says. He previously performed at the Buxton festival with Fraser Valley Stage in 2006. The group made its first trip there in 2001 and also appeared at a 2003 stage festival in Waterford, Ireland – the same place Roper made
West Abbotsford Community School is again offering its Pre-teen Extreme program, thanks to funding from Coast Capital Savings. The program is open to kids in Grades 4 to 7 and provides games, activities and special events two days a week. The kids have a say in the events, with their own pre-teen council guided by staff, who serve as role models and mentors. “It provides a positive outlet,” said executive director Pierre Welbedagt. “These preteens learn leadership and goal setting and

He says despite all the festival experience so many members of Fraser Valley Stage bring with them, there are still some considerable challenges the group faces when it arrives in the U.K. Rehearsals are planned for both the morning and the afternoon prior to taking the stage for the Buxton evening performance. “With the high energy that you need on stage, it can be quite exhausting,” he says, adding the company will have some preparation for that threeperformance day when it executes a doubleheader April 21 in Abbotsford. Co-producer Kathy McWhinney agrees with Roper’s assessment about the draining nature of the Buxton trip. “It’s so much fun though,” she says. “The energy is so high. I think people crash a little bit a couple of days later, but it’s such an exciting thing to do and we’re so fortunate to go.” McWhinney says an undertaking like H.M.S. Pinafore requires a small army of volunteers to function as performers, set construction workers, painters, costume designers, make-up people, prop masters, stage managers, and sound and lighting technicians. Although costs are limited mostly to construction material, props, costumes, orchestra members, publicity and the venue rental, the final price tag still comes in at about $38,000. The company has a travel expense fund for Buxton, but entrants into the competition are paying for the majority of their expenses. McWhinney, who also performs in the chorus, says the reason Fraser Valley Stage is able to pull off such a task is because all involved treat it like a labour of love. “The camaraderie and the joy of participating in a production like this – the voices and all the singing together like that – is a fabulous, fabulous experience,” McWhinney says. “It’s absolutely all worth it at the end.” Tickets are available at fraservalleystage.com or by calling 604-853-4164. This resulted in an increase in “pocket dials” – when a phone stored in a pocket, purse or backpack accidentally hits the three digits or when 911 is programmed into the device. “I’ve had a lot of calls from Rogers Arena when the Canucks were playing,” said E-Comm 911 call-taker Corey Kelso. “I’ve heard pucks drop, I’ve heard the announcements, and I’ve actually heard Richard Loney singing the national anthem.” Doug Watson, E-Comm’s vice-president of 911 operations, advises the public to use keylocks on their cellphones, store them in protective cases and not pre-program the digits into any phone. If 911 is called by mistake, the centre asks that callers stay on the line and speak with the call-taker. When callers hang up, staff will call back to ensure the caller is safe, tying up more resources and, in the case of hang-ups from landlines, dispatching police.

Wavering commitment? Taken at face value, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon’s bemusement over the Legislature press gallery’s reaction to his noncommittal comments about next year’s general election is well-timed – and amusing – damage control. The Surrey-Cloverdale MLA’s remarks came in response to questions stemming from the defection of Abbotsford MLA John van Dongen from the BC Liberals to the Conservatives. Reporters asked if Falcon would run in the May 14, 2013 fixed-date election. His response: family priorities might take precedence over any political aspirations. Not unexpectedly, one would think, this kicked off speculation on what it meant to the party’s – and specifically Premier Christy Clark’s – future. Falcon noted he goes through the same process before every election.
After all, shouldn’t family – as Clark often suggests – come first? Besides, what incumbent commits to running 14 months prior to voting day? Many, it turns out. With good reason. When we cast our ballots for political representation, we are investing in our future. At all levels, we seek visionaries with both long- and short-term goals to better serve us. The minister of finance, it must be noted, is the architect of the annual budget, projecting our economic needs well into the future. If Falcon can’t commit, Clark must find someone who will. During the divisive campaign, for the premier’s job, Falcon repeatedly stated he would be running in the next election, win or lose. What has changed? – Black Press

B.C. Views The information age might have sped up B.C. voters’ mood swings, but the basic dynamic hasn’t changed since the days of Social Credit. When familiarity breeds contempt, people vote to reject the familiar and see what happens. Or as one radio talkshow caller summed up his decision to climb on board the B.C. Conservative bandwagon, he knows two things about leader John Cummins: “He’s not Adrian Dix and he’s not Christy Clark.” It’s been more than 21 years since Gordon Wilson reshaped B.C. politics and launched the modern-day B.C. Liberal Party with a single quip in a leaders’ debate between a bickering Rita Johnston and Mike Harcourt. Cummins has about a year to show he’s earned his rising poll numbers, and to refute the conventional wisdom that he’s the best friend the NDP has had since Wilson put
them in power and later joined them. So let’s get to know Cummins a bit better. He’s 70, and has an 18-year record as a Reform-Alliance-Conservative MP. His Ottawa days are mainly remembered for battling treaties and aboriginal-only fisheries, and for being the first Reform MP to reverse himself and take the MP pension. That pension pays him about $100,000 a year as he tries to build a second political career in B.C. Another legacy of Cummins’ federal record is his support for the harmonized sales tax. As he hastens to clarify, he supported Conservative legislation to enter into HST deals with any province, which Ontario and B.C. subsequently did. Cummins said B.C. could have brought in the HST at a lower rate to reflect its broader reach, as Atlantic provinces did. But they tried to make it a “tax grab” and now they’ve “poisoned the well” for many years. “We’re going to have to pay the price I guess, in the sense that where it has been introduced, it has been shown to have grown business,” Cummins said. “Think tanks on both the left and the right have come to that conclusion.”
To me this beats the NDP’s crude coffee-shop populism that simply ignores HST benefits for small business and the poor. Speaking of crude, Cummins further distinguishes himself from the B.C. Liberals by endorsing the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline to Kitimat. He applauds the federal government for

His record on aboriginal issues suggests he has little sympathy for territorial objections from First Nations, those with treaties or those without. The April 19 by-elections in Port
Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope offer a chance for the B.C. Conservatives to present policy alternatives. So far they’re against gas taxes, especially the carbon tax, against a second Metro Vancouver garbage incinerator, and in favour of fixing the “catch and release” justice system. These are the slogans that stand in for actual policies needed to govern. Cummins will be going door to door in the by-elections, especially in Chilliwack-Hope, where he believes his upstart party has a real shot at winning. He offers a telling anecdote about the last time he was door-knocking in Port Moody, the premier’s former hometown. The B.C. Liberals have suggested the B.C. Conservatives chose Christine Clarke as their candidate to capitalize on the premier’s name recognition. That wasn’t what Cummins and his previously unknown candidate found when they first started campaigning. “She’d say hi, my name is Christine Clarke, and the doors would close rather quickly,” Cummins said. Now she identifies herself as the B.C. Conservative candidate, then gives her name. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

I have read too many negative remarks about the Abbotsford Heat. I wonder if the people complaining have ever gone to a game and felt the community spirit there. I am not a real hockey fan, but I really love the atmosphere at the Heat games. Recently, I attended the game with my dogs. It was fabulous. The great thing about it was that $5 from each dog ticket was donated to the SPCA. As I walked through the lobby, the SPCA was there with information about their programs, treats from the makers, or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Greeniesâ&#x20AC;? were being handed out to the dogs, As I walked, I ran into dog food samples,

Five new exhibits at The Reach
The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford is presenting five visual art and historical exhibitions opening today at 7 p.m. Bearing Witness focuses on the rereading of history, the provocation of power relations and the notion of bearing witness to world events through personal and collective narratives. Socially engaged
works of art offer a powerful means of communicating human experience. They bring attention to political violence, unjust social realities and man’s inhumanity to man. Telling Stories by Vancouver artist Richard Prince, explores aspects of the landscape and ranges from wind and erosion to the aurora
borealis and other cosmological events. It is not simply the landscape of direct observation but rather it is a poetic landscape that reveals the often hidden, underlying structure. Pia Massie’s video installation, Just Beyond Hope, examines the experiences of JapaneseCanadians and Japanese-Americans during the Second World War. Using personal archival photos, letters and newspapers, Just Beyond Hope creates a dialogue
between non-Japanese and Japanese, Canadians and Americans. Jae Nam’s exhibition, Paper talk, Finger talk, examines the phenomenon of social media and how we communicate with our fingers. School Days explores the good old days of reading, writing and arithmetic in Abbotsford through reminiscences of former students. From the Gifford teacher who requested the school district provide a canoe for her to travel to school
in to memories of a kind neighbour who filled the oil lamp to light students’ way safely home on dark winter nights, photos and artifacts from The Reach Permanent Collection will support what the stories conjure up in the imagination. Buyers are looking for affordable options in Fraser Valley real estate. The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB) processed 1,412 sales on its Multiple Listing Servics (MLS) in March, a decrease of 22 per cent compared to March of last year, however only 13 per cent less than the 10-year average of 1,626 sales for same month. “It was quieter than usual for March, but still steady with an increase in demand for more affordable properties, in particular detached homes for less than $500,000 and townhomes,” said Scott Olson, president of FVREB. “Compared to last March, every community in Fraser Valley experienced a decrease in the sales of single family detached homes especially those priced at the higher-end; however Abbotsford, Langley and North Surrey all saw increases in the sale of townhomes. “Last year, single family homes represented 63 per cent of our residential market. This March, it dropped to 56 per cent, so we’re seeing demand for more affordable options. This is in contrast to last year when we saw elevated sales of higher-end homes in areas such as North Delta, South Surrey and White Rock.” In March 2012 in Fraser Valley, the sale of detached

homes with a value greater than half a million dollars decreased by 33 per cent compared to last year, explaining why average prices, which can be skewed by the dollar volume of high or low end sales, are showing decreases year-over-year, while benchmark prices – homes with typical characteristics for the neighbourhood – are showing increases compared to 2011. The MLS House Price Index benchmark price of a detached home in March was $572,700, an increase of 6.8 per cent compared to $536,200 last year. The benchmark price of Fraser Valley townhouses increased by 1.5 per cent in one year, going from $310,300 in March 2011 to $315,000 in March 2012, while the benchmark price of apartments also increased by 1.5 per cent going from $210,600 in March of last year to $204,700 in March 2012. The number of Fraser Valley properties on the market in March finished at 9,643, an increase of 5 per cent compared to the same month last year although the number of new listings received – 3,066 – represents a 9 per cent decrease compared to March 2011. The average number of days to sell a detached home was 46 in March 2012, one day faster than last year. It took 49 days on average to sell a townhouse and under two months or 58 days to sell an apartment.

Pilots set to host B.C.’s Dan KINVIG
On Monday afternoon, most Abbotsford Pilots players were wearing T-shirts and shorts when they showed up for practice, taking maximum advantage of a sunny spring day. They’ve still got plenty of work to do inside the relatively chilly confines of MSA Arena, though. The local junior B hockey club will have home ice advantage during the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial championship tournament, which opens on Thursday and wraps up Sunday. They’re gearing up to battle the Delta Ice Hawks, the Victoria Cougars and the Beaver Valley Nitehawks for the right to represent B.C. at the Keystone Cup, the Western Canadian championship, in Saskatoon April 19-22. The Pilots have known since the start of the season that they’d be at the Cyclone Taylor Cup by virtue of their host status, but according to head coach Jim Cowden, that reality never gave way to complacency. Abbotsford showed a great deal of determination in battling all the way to the Pacific International Junior Hockey League final, where they fell in six games to Delta. “At the beginning of the year, yeah, we talked about it,” Cowden said. “But then we forgot about it for four or five months. There comes a point where it’s just business as usual. As you get closer, you get a little more excited. “We’ve tried to put a competitive team together, and I think we’ve done that.” The first three days of the tourney are a round robin, with games running at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Pilots are in the late game each day, facing Victoria on Thursday, Delta on Friday and Beaver Valley on Saturday.

Predeceased by sister Catherine. He is survived by his wife Flora of 64 years, four children Sharon Russell, Daphne (Hans) Wolfs, David (Lenore) Howie, Carol Pollex; eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; two sisters Helen Apps and Joy Hoskyn, brothers Robert and Keith Howie, as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Jack was a veteran of WWII and stationed in Debert, NS. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed playing golf well into his eighties. Dad was loved by many and sadly missed by all.
