Heat centre Quintin Laing accelerates away from Derek Nesbitt of the Peoria Rivermen.

John Van Putten photo

Family values fuel Laing DanKINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS

Ask Jim Playfair why he picked Quintin Laing as captain of the Abbotsford Heat, and the Ärst of many superlatives the Heat head coach offers is that Laing is a “great family man.” Laing, for his part, is simply thankful to have a great family. The 31-year-old centre credits his support system at home – wife Aimee and sons Hunter, 4, and Hayden, 2 – for helping him through a dark time in his hockey career. Laing spent the better part of the 200910 campaign in the NHL with the Washington Capitals, suiting up for 36 games with the Presidents’ Trophy winners. But as a free agent last summer, he faced a

tough job market and was unemployed when the season opened. Stuck in limbo, the Laings enrolled Hunter in preschool in Saskatoon, and Quintin practiced with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to stay in shape. Finally, just before Halloween, the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings came calling. Laing uprooted his family and moved them to the B.C. capital, only to pack things up again in short order when the Heat offered a tryout contract in early November. “It was a tough situation,” Laing said. “But my family was great through the whole thing. My wife was real supportive. A lot of days you get down and depressed, just because you haven’t gone

through it before and you don’t know what’s going to happen. It was nice to have her to lean on.” Upon arriving in Abbotsford, Laing immediately became the Heat’s elder statesman by quite a margin. Matt Keith, at 27, had been the most senior citizen on the youngest team in the AHL, and ten Ärst-year players have suited up for the Heat this season. With so many youngsters on the roster, Laing has noticed parallels between fatherhood and Heat captaincy. “You always want to set a good example,” he said. “I’m not going to tell the guys to do something and then not do it myself. It’s the same way with kids, too. If you want them to have good table

manners, you’ve got to show them by example.” The most obvious illustration of Laing’s lead-by-example philosophy is his fearlessness in blocking shots. He never hesitates to throw his body in front of a slap shot – it’s a task he earned plaudits for during his time with the Capitals. During a recent game against the Peoria Rivermen, Laing hobbled off the ice after taking a puck in the leg on the penalty kill. But the very next shift, he hopped back over the boards. “It’s the little things that win games and get you more ice time,” he explained. “When you get called up (to the NHL), you have to do something to stand out, Continued on page 9

Taking stock at midseason In each edition of the Abbotsford News’s FACEOFF magazine, beat reporter Dan Kinvig chats with head coach Jim Playfair about the state of the team. For future editions of FACEOFF, fans are invited to pose their own questions for Playfair. Submit your questions for consideration via email to sports@abbynews. com, or via Twitter to @dankinvigsports. We spoke with Playfair halfway through the regular season, prior to the Heat’s Jan. 14-16 home set against the Toronto Marlies.

Q Jim PLAYFAIR

Q A

We’re at the midpoint of the season. How would you evaluate the progress of this group from Game 1 to Game 40?

A

“We started off with the youngest team in the league, and then we got hit with a ton of injuries. In saying all that, I still think we’re probably Äve wins off where we should be. We’ve put ourselves in position on enough occasions where we should have come away with wins, but didn’t. “I don’t think that we’ve outplayed teams consistently enough to become a really good team ourselves. Our focus has still got to be on being a hard team to play against, by doing things right and

better together as a group. I think those two areas are going to make us much better as a team, and that’s what we need to focus on.”

at a higher tempo. When you’re one game over .500 after 40 games, you’re not excited.”

Q A

Leland Irving was arguably your team’s MVP in the Ärst half. He hasn’t been quite as sharp lately, but can you imagine where you’d be without him? “I think this – Leland’s at the perfect point at his career now where the development has to take that next step. And he’s started to take that step. “Quite honestly, the Christmas season is a tough part of the schedule for teams to handle, and when you’re as young as we are, it’s that much tougher. The extra demands that are put on each and every player, taking their focus off of their goals. “Right now, I think we’re trying to get ourselves through that, and Leland is right there with us.”

The Heat were a very good second-half team last year. What needs to happen this season to replicate that Änishing kick? “We have to get healthy and stay healthy, that’s the Ärst thing. The second thing is, we have to be a team that takes great pride in holding each other accountable and being

Q A

Q

A

What does the Jan. 16 game on the CBC mean to the franchise? “I think it’s good for the whole organization to let the people know that there is a team in Abbotsford that plays professional hockey. The CBC game is going to help identify us as a team that takes pride in being a good team in a good environment, in a great city and a great building.”

T.J. Brodie was named to the AHL all-star game. I know he’s had ups and downs this season (Brodie began the season with the Calgary Flames, but was a healthy scratch for the Heat on Dec. 31 vs. Texas). What did you think of his selection? “I think the game is about players like T.J. He has certainly earned the right to be there. We had a few more young Ärst-year players that I know got consideration (as allstars) – I was in a group of coaches that discussed it. It’s good for T.J. . . . Hopefully it’s a good learning experience for him.”

Q A Q A

If you were showing someone around your hometown of Fox Valley, Sask., where would you start the tour? “I’d start at the farm, for sure. It’s our family homestead. It’s a pretty interesting place. You can pretty much do whatever the heck you want. We’ve got lots of toys to keep ourselves occupied.”

604.852.1640

33147 South Fraser Way

www.sportszonesports.com

Tell me a little bit about that. How do you keep yourself busy in the offseason?

Special Olympics BC – Abbotsford’s Active Start program for children ages 2 - 6 years old with an intellectual disability is starting in January 2011!

“I’m not really battling to keep myself occupied in the summer. My dad’s got me on the go 24/7, just doing the farming thing. In down-time, we’ve got quads, some horses, a donkey. You name it, we’ve got it out there.”

Q A donkey? A “His name is Turbo. If you have a bad day or whatever, you just go look at him. He’s so goofy-looking, he just makes you laugh.”

Q A Q A

If you could be in a commercial, what company or product would you choose to endorse? “Meyer’s Fuel, for sure. It’s our family station out of Fox Valley. We distribute fuel in bulk with semis to all the farmers in the area. It allows them to stay on the farm and just keep working.” Hockey players are renowned for practical jokes. What’s the best one you’ve pulled off, or the best one you’ve seen? “There’s a few that I can’t really tell you about. The best one on the record? I saw a rookie go out on the ice with sock tape on his blades. There’s no edge there, it’s completely slippery. The guy almost ended up hurting himself when he landed on his back. But it’s all good now. That was with the Rochester Americans.”

Q Which player on this team would you trust to date your sister? A “Oh geez, that’s a tough one. Probably Cammy, because I know eventually

he’d just forget where she lives. (Chuckles) He’s a good kid, but he’s young.”

Q For clarity’s sake, is that Bryan Cameron, or Cam Cunning? A “Bryan Cameron. (Chuckles) Cam Cunning, absolutely not. Absolutely not.” Q What’s your greatest accomplishment in hockey? A “I’d say making the National Hockey League, and playing for the Calgary

Flames. That’s our hometown team, two hours down Highway No. 1. Everybody is a Flames fan back home, and my family and friends got to come to the Saddledome to watch me play.”

MEET the HEAT

fan

What’s your favourite thing about coming to a Heat game?

“We really get into the camaraderie of the people we’re sitting with. We cheer the team on and harass the opposing players, and we just have a great time. It’s a three-hour diversion from life where you get into the team you like and the game you love. It’s fun, you know?” Who’s your favourite opposing player to heckle?

“It was (Ryan) White. He played for Hamilton last year. He just liked to chirp on the ice all the time, and I didn’t think he respected the fans. So we gave him a hard time, and it was fun.” How do you support the Heat when you’re away from the rink?

“I wear my Heat shirt and hat a whole lot, and I’ve got a little banner in my truck. I wish I had a big banner to put on my back

window. And I’m talking about the game everywhere, whether it’s at the barber’s getting my

hair cut or at the doctor’s ofÄce. There’s always someone who wants to talk about the Heat.”

Shot-blocking is Laing’s specialty From 3

Quintin Laing is the third captain in Abbotsford Heat history, following in the footsteps of Brett Palin and Garth Murray.

something that makes them go, ‘Wow, this guy really wants to be here.’ That was kind of the thing that got my foot in the door with the Capitals. I wanted them to know I’d do anything to stop that puck from going in. “I’m the kind of guy who, if the puck went by me and went into the net, I just couldn’t sleep at night. I’d do anything possible not to get scored on.” The Heat went captainless until Dec. 31, when Playfair bestowed the ‘C’ on Laing. With such a young group, the Abbotsford bench boss thought it wise to get a good feel for his personnel before making a decision. A litany of injuries at the start of the season delayed the process further, but when Laing arrived, Playfair knew had a leader made to order. The Heat are the third AHL team Laing has captained – he served the same role with the Hershey Bears and the Norfolk Admirals. “He’s a great person, a great father, a great family man,” Playfair said. “He’s had NHL experience with a top organization, and he has aspirations of getting back there. “He’s got a great deal of respect in the dressing room, as well as from the coaches and the trainers. When you ask the players, he’s a logical choice because he’s so consistent with his work ethic and his effort.” Ryan Stone, one of two Heat assistant captains along with Keith, echoed Playfair’s praise of Laing. “When he speaks, people listen,” Stone said. “Guys watch him around the rink, and on the ice. You want your captain to be kind of like that – someone people listen to and watch.” After the uncertainty of last fall, Laing has found an element of stability in Abbotsford. He’s got the ‘C’ on his chest, and his AHL contract has been extended to the end of the season. The Harris, Sask. native is enjoying watching his boys grow up. “They’re both hockey-obsessed,” he said with a chuckle. “They do it 18 hours a day – the only time they’re not into hockey is when they’re sleeping. They watch it, they play it on Wii. “Hunter, when he comes to our games and the other team scores in a shootout, he starts crying. He’s pretty hardcore.” If Dad can help guide the youthful Heat to a second-half surge, it’ll be nothing but smiles.

Dave SHELDON

Willie Nelson penned the famous song “On the Road Again” about 30 years ago. In his country classic, Nelson mused about life on the road, making music with his friends, and how he misses being on the road, despite the grind that comes with travel. The Abbotsford Heat need to borrow from Willie, and also from Mel Gibson. Not the Mel Gibson of today, but of the 1980s. Before he became a mega-star with the Lethal Weapon franchise, Gibson thrilled us with “The Road Warrior.” That movie had a simple premise that the Heat can now relate to – survival of the Ättest. As the Heat embark on a 10-game road trip, their longest of the season, the situation is reminiscent of one year ago. On Feb. 9, 2010, the Heat were one game under .500 and out of the playoff picture as they packed up on a nine-game journey during the Winter Olympics. The Heat turned their season around with an 8-1 record on that trip and went from Äfth place in the North Division to challenging for second. This year’s team, record-wise, is eerily similar to last year. In the Ärst 43 games of the 2009-10 season, the Heat had 46 points. After 43 games this season, the Heat have 44 points.

What is different about this year is that the Heat are young, and the kids need to start producing. Abbotsford has allowed three fewer goals to this point of the season, which is better of course, but they have also scored 20 fewer goals. This needs to change. The players

‘‘

This team has heart, there’s no question about it.

don’t need to change their stripes and become offensive juggernauts – simply bury their chances and beneÄt from their hard work. This team has outworked last year’s team hands down, but last year’s team had experience to fall back on, which this year’s group does not. Last year after 43 games, the Heat scored the opening goal 19 times and were lights out when they did that,

BALD

posting a 14-2-2-1 record. This year the Heat have scored Ärst in 18 games, for a record of 12-3-1-2. Either way, the lesson is simple – score Ärst. This team has heart, there’s no question about it. You look down the lineup and you see names like Laing, Stone, Keith, Bouma, Pelech, etc. – players who don’t know what the word quit means. Last year, the Heat were 0-15 when trailing after two periods. This year, they have pulled out four wins when trailing after 40 minutes. The Heat have shown us they can compete with any team. They now have to do it every night. They have shown they can battle through adversity, now they have to prove they can rise above the pack and grab a playoff spot. If they can catch lightning in a bottle twice and roll off an impressive win streak like they did last year, then away we go. But in order to do that, the Heat will need to bring their scoring sticks with them. Willie Nelson didn’t have to worry about winning, but the Heat must Änd a way or they will be singing from a different song sheet by the middle of April. Dave Sheldon is the director of communications and broadcast for the Abbotsford Heat. He writes a monthly column for Faceoff magazine.
