‘Some not going to make it’ Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen said he will petition the government for relief on behalf of his constituents who lost potato and vegetable crops. The former agriculture minister is reviewing the damage done by September’s deluges. He sees total wipeouts on Delta, Richmond and Cloverdale potato farms, significant damage to vegetable crops, and variable impact on Abbotsford’s Sumas Prairie, depending on soil type and drainage. Farmers will have three avenues for relief. Production insurance will cover some losses, if they bought in and paid a premium. The AgriStability program is an income stabilization program that is administered by the province, but it may take as long as 18 months before producers see funding. The AgriRecovery program is a joint federal/pro- VAN DONGEN vincial program designed to compensate farmers in the event of natural disasters such as diseases, floods or droughts. That program must be triggered by the province, which then pays 40 per cent of the compensation, with the rest of the funds coming from the federal government. Van Dongen believes AgriRecovery is warranted for Fraser Valley producers this fall. He characterizes them as competent producers in a tough business, who are suffering dire circumstances. “It’s an unmitigated disaster,” said van Dongen. “We’re down to some good farmers, and if we don’t give them some help, they’re not going to make it.”

An Abbotsford duplex suffered extensive fire and smoke damage to the upper floor of one of the homes on Saturday evening. The residents were not home at the time the blaze broke out at about 7 p.m. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service arrived at 2638 Parkview St. to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the front living room window of the home. The fire was discovered by a neighbour. A total of 18 firefighters were able to contain the fire to one side of the duplex. The occupants of the adjoining residence and the basement suite were evacuated. Abbotsford Social Services attended the scene to ensure the residents were provided food and accommodation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The local rock group dedicated the honour to keyboardist Krista Loewen (who left the group) and to late drummer Devon Clifford. The 30-year-old musician passed away in April of this year. Clifford suffered a massive brain hemorrhage resulting from a congenital defect. Following the tragedy, Loewen decided to leave the group to focus on her personal life.

Chicken Saltimbocca (Serves 4) 4 chicken breasts 6 fresh sage leaves - torn 10 slices of prosciutto - thinly sliced 1/4 cup white wine

Take your chicken breasts and place them between plastic wrap or in a plastic bag. Pound each chicken breast with a mallot 4-5 times - remove from wrap and set aside. Salt and pepper both sides of the chicken. Lightly dredge both sides of chicken in ﬂour. Add olive oil to a hot pan and sear chicken on both sides transfer to the oven set at 350 degrees.

Cook for approximately 12-15 minutes. Remove from oven and place back on stove with the heat high. Add proscuitto for a light sautee. Add wine and let reduce in pan 1/2 way. Once the wine is reduced add the butter (whisk it into the wine creating a butter sauce) and remove from heat Lastly add the fresh sage.

Reclaiming justice system Ed Schellenberg would likely still be alive today if the justice system did not take an “anything but jail” approach to dealing with criminals, his brotherin-law Steve Brown told a crowd of 100 at a town hall meeting last week in Abbotsford. Schellenberg and another innocent victim, Chris Mohan, 22, were killed in the Surrey Six slayings three years ago. Two of the four bad guys killed had a long criminal history and would likely have been in jail if they lived anywhere but B.C., where a lengthy criminal past means less chance of jail. Steve Brown spoke these true words: “I’m convinced we’re the only jurisdiction in the world that has these proliﬁc offenders out in the streets.” We have a mockery of justice taking place every day, with our highly paid police ofﬁcers chasing around repeat offenders. Many culprits have dozens of convictions against them. Police are doing what they can with the courts

mocking their efforts. How many times do police chiefs, media, politicians and, worst of all, victims have to speak out about this disgustingly broken system before real change can happen? Change isn’t coming from the federal government, which controls the laws of this land. The Conservatives have made some attempts to toughen the courts, which many provincial court judges ignored. Change can’t come from the public. Our collective voices are hoarse. Former judge Wally Oppal recently admitted that no one oversees the work of judges. Will it take anarchy and vigilantism to bring complete reform? Let’s hope not. The province needs to take back the power of B.C.’s judicial system, starting with a new slate of judges who understand that the public is willing to pay higher taxes for more jails if it means criminals who ruin lives stay behind bars. – Black Press

Other Hand At a dinner the other night, the table conversation led to talk of neighbourhoods, and out of that came a brief discussion on the merit of the now under-construction Whatcom Road connector that will link the freeway to McKee Road. Thus the decision to actually have a look at what was going on through the BC Hydro powerline right-of-way that leaves Sumas Prairie near the Whatcom interchange and arcs west over the hillside in its march towards metropolitan Vancouver. So Sunday, with dog in tow, we entered the aptly named Discovery Trail at McKee Road for a walk to the east, to discover what lay in the future for neighbourhood connectivity and ease of access to the freeway. While residents of the mountainous area of East Abbotsford currently

have a couple of routes into town or to Highway 1, both have their “access” challenges. The new road should, at least for some, speed up their commute. But Sunday’s walk, despite the evidence of almost-complete construction, revealed a remarkable sense of solitude. It was as though, after a few short paces, we had been transported to some remote powerline right-of-way in the Interior wilderness. Silence, serenity, ancient trees, swampy ponds and a handful of freeranging cattle ... yet in reality we were in the heart of a city. We found that Discovery Trail ended abruptly about halfway across the ridge that bridges the homes along McKee Road with those of Mountain Village, its progress halted presumably by construction activity for the new roadway. In fact, I’d have to assume, due to the routing and the steepness of the terrain caused in part by the need to elevate the vehicular route, the trail will become from that point on Discovery “sidewalk.” That last remark is not to detract from the purpose of the path which will, regardless of its conﬁguration, still lead

you to discover vistas and connections not previously accessed. I urge you to take this walk soon because the serenity is about to be lost as the Whatcom connector is only weeks from completion, and the surrounding hillsides that now create an impression

Gone will be most of the trees and surely the cattle, which due to the apparent lack of fences, surprisingly haven’t so far appeared to stray onto the lawns and lanes of existing residential areas ... in the meantime, they add to the ambiance. If there is a critical note to be made of all of this, it is the new roadway itself,

which with a travel surface of about 10 meters width, appears to be designed to accommodate little more than two lanes of trafﬁc. I’m no engineer or city planner, but considering the current and future residential development of Sumas Mountain, and the demand it places on infrastructure, a full four-lane roadway with a centre turn lane into the development areas along its course might have been be a more foresightful expenditure of tax dollars. However, there will certainly be good value in the new road, and it will add a speedier, scenic if you ignore the transmission towers, byway off the mountain for some residents. Meanwhile, take a walk on the newly paved Discovery Trail while the maples are still ﬂaunting their fall colours. With huge rocks and steep bluffs bordering the steep little valley, it offers a rare, and soon to be lost, adventure into an area of Abbotsford that time has changed little since native trails once traversed the route as a connection between Sumas lake and the Fraser River. markrushton@abbynews.com

Scrap existing system of corrections Re: Heartened by crime forum, Oct. 23 edition We see much news in the media about violent offenders being released into society and reoffending, causing many citizens to harbour serious reservations about the effectiveness of our correctional systems in Canada. A good personal friend is a crown prosecutor. He informs me unofficially that our justice systems have nothing to do with providing true justice. Rather, he claims that their primary function is to uphold our laws as established by our lawmakers, whether they be good, bad or

indifferent laws. This raises the question, how does studying law equip judges with the wisdom to know the proper length of sentence for any particular offender, and what training do our elected law makers receive to know how to write and pass good legislation in regard to the treatment of offenders. We need to scrap our existing systems of corrections and justice and replace them as follows: All convicted serial killers and serial sexual offenders automatically receive life sentences with no possibility of parole. Personally, I would have no problem with a return of the execution of such types.

All other convicted offenders are to receive sentences of indefinite length, until they have demonstrated to qualified authorities that they have successfully equipped themselves to live responsibly as free citizens. The safeguard must be a rigidly enforced one-strike-andyou’re-out rule. Once a released inmate has clearly demonstrated that he/she has violated the trust that has been invested in him/ her, such violators of trust automatically forfeits his/her freedom for life. This may appear to be a very harsh system of justice, but it would be a vast improvement over

what we now have. A justice/corrections system which fails to provide true justice for the victims of crime, which fails to correct criminal behaviour, and which fails to protect society is, itself, a failure, as our current system proves to be. Only an aroused and vocal public will ever produce positive change. I think that we have a citizenry which is frustrated with the existing system, but doesn’t know what to do about it. How do we break the powerful grip of those who maintain the existing inefficient systems unless the voting public gets aroused enough to make our lawmakers

Waterfowl funding

Ducks Unlimited raised about $40,000 at its annual Abbotsford banquet and auction, held at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre on Saturday evening. Organizer J.O. Trethewey said the 200 people in attendance were generous in their bidding, especially considering how the economic downturn has impacted charitable donations in general.

“We’re happy under the circumstances,” said Trethewey. The key DU project locally is the Lakemount Marsh, a 105-hectare wetland that sees counts as high as 1,600 waterfowl per day, including up to 600 trumpeter swans. It is the last remains of Sumas Lake, which was drained in the 1920s. Mission’s Silverdale Marsh is another local DU project.

Monday morning’s provincial cabinet shuffle brought frustration for opponents of the Metro Regional District waste-to-energy plan. Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner was the referee in the incineration debate between Metro and the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), but he has now been replaced as environment minister by Murray Coell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands. Abbotsford Coun.

Patricia Ross is concerned that Coell will have to be quickly brought up to speed on a complex issue. The chair of the FVRD environmental committee has been lobbying Penner to refuse approval for incineration in the Lower Mainlande because of air quality concerns. In recent weeks, the FVRD presented its case in a package to the former environment minister, and met with him personally. “I can’t tell you how frustrating this is,” said Ross. “For people out there who are con-

After years of rumours about a family of Prius vehicles, Toyota announced it will unveil the Prius MPV at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January. Toyota sells two-millionth Prius The world’s best-selling hybrid vehicle, Toyota Prius, has produced another milestone with the purchase of the two-millionth car. Sales have accelerated rapidly as Toyota has made a concerted effort to promote and popularise hybrid technology, chieﬂy through Prius. It took more than 10 years for Prius to reach one million sales, but less than two-and-a-half years to post the second million - or more than four times quicker. The total includes almost 940,000 deliveries in North America, more than 825,000 in Japan, 206,000 in Europe and 40,000 in the rest of the world. Australians have bought more than 16,200 since Prius was launched in this country in October 2001. Toyota Motor Corporation believes Prius vehicles worldwide have reduced CO2 emissions (considered a cause of global warming) by approximately 11 million tons.

The comparison is against petrolpowered vehicles in the same class and of similar size and driving performance. Prius was ﬁrst launched in Japan late in 1997 and is now sold in more than 70 countries and regions. Annual sales exceeded 100,000 for the ﬁrst time in 2004 and achieved a record of more than 400,000 last year. Prius sales this year have already eclipsed the 2009 total, largely due to strong sales in Japan where it has been the best-selling car for the past 17 months in a row. Toyota’s overall sales of hybrid vehicles now exceed 2.8 million. After Prius, the most popular Toyota hybrid is the Hybrid Camry with more than 200,000 sales globally. Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said there were strong reasons behind the accelerating sales of Prius.

“Motorists are becoming increasingly aware that hybrid technology delivers performance as well as signiﬁcant savings on the cost of fuel,” Mr. Buttner said. “That trend will gain pace as other manufacturers announce plans to introduce their own hybrid vehicles - a development Toyota welcomes,” he said. Prius uses 3.9 litres/100km of regular unleaded fuel, based on the ofﬁcial combined cycle. It emits less carbon dioxide than any other vehicle on the Australian market - just 89g/km. Mr. Buttner said TMC was committed to developing hybrid systems as a core technology. Toyota’s goal is to reach onemillion hybrid sales per year as early as possible in the decade from 2010. The next target is to adopt hybrid technologies in all model series as soon as feasible in the 2020s.

When the dust had settled following a busy weekend of Canada West soccer at Bateman Park, both University of the Fraser Valley squads had reason to smile. The Cascades women gave themselves a huge boost in the Canada West playoff race, knocking off the Manitoba Bisons and Regina Cougars without allowing a single goal. The UFV men had already been mathematically eliminated from post-season contention coming in, but a 2-1 victory over their local rivals from Trinity

Western University on Saturday represented a bright spot in a difficult season. “It just lifts your spirits,” UFV men’s coach Alan Errington said. “So many weeks, we’ve found a way to lose. This time, we found a way to win.” The Cascades women also found ways to win. On a weekend where they dominated play to an extent that wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard, the UFV side dug deep and got the results they needed – a 3-0 victory over Manitoba on Saturday, and a 2-0 win over Regina on Sunday. Carly Neeson scored twice to lead the Cascades past the

Bisons, while Megan Webster notched both of UFV’s tallies against Regina on penalty kicks. Keeper Chantelle Biagioni posted a pair of shutouts. “One thing I’m proud of the girls for is, we carried the play, but we couldn’t find the finishing touch,” UFV bench boss Rob Giesbrecht said. “But we kept to our game plan, and worked hard.” With two games to go in the regular season, the Cascades women are in a dogfight for the fourth and final Canada West playoff spot. UFV is tied with the Saskatchewan Huskies for fourth with a 6-5-1 record and 19 points, and the Calgary Dinos

are lurking just one point back. Add it all up, and this weekend’s home games against Calgary (Saturday) and Lethbridge (Sunday) amount to the biggest games in UFV’s fiveyear history of Canada West soccer. Both begin at 12 p.m. at Bateman Park, followed by men’s games at 2:15 p.m. A pair of goals from Sasa Plavsic paced the UFV men (3-90) past Trinity on Saturday. On Sunday, the Cascades had a 2-1 lead over UBC in the first half, but the Thunderbirds responded with five unanswered goals. Abbotsford product Gagan Dosanjh scored twice to spark the UBC rally.

After another excellent showing on the road, the Abbotsford Heat are hoping to make some hay in the standings as they embark on an extended engagement at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. BARBER, Marion Mason Born on January 26, 1928 to Lide and Rebecca Barber in Gerber, California. Marvin passed away on October 20, 2010 in Abbotsford, B.C. He was raised by his grandparents in Spruce Coulee and Donalda, Alberta where he loved roaming the hills, trapping, hunting, and fishing. At age 17 he moved to Port Moody. Marvin, known to his friends as Cookie, worked at Flaval Cedar and Brownsville as sawyer until retiring in Abbotsford at 60. Always learning he was a man of many talents, very inventive and creative. He enjoyed letter writing, painting, gardening, golfing, fishing and traveling. Marvin had a very fulfilling life. Predeceased by brother Noble, sisters Viola and Fern. survived by wife Edith, children Geraldeen, Bruce (Denece), Lee (Cindy), Blain, Lyle (Bonnie), Becky (Fred), Lonnie (Tony) & Alison. Special thanks to Marv’s friends Colleen & Danny & the nurses at ARH. Howarth Norman Edward Cecil June 3, 1929 - October 19, 2010

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa. Norm is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bridie; seven children - Sharon (Doug) Enns, Doug (Elaine), Brenda Ritchie, Debra (Cal) Vanderveen, Kathleen (Ray) VanStaalduinen, Janice, Denise (Len) Smit, 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, brother Tom and 9 other siblings in Manitoba. He was predeceased by two brothers and grandson, Bryce. Norm was a very hardworking man his entire life. Born & raised in Wakopa, Manitoba on a grain farm, he had to work hard alongside his siblings. In August, 1949 Norm married his sweetheart, Bridie May of Dunrea, Manitoba. Ten years later, with their ﬁve children they headed to Abbotsford where two more were born. He took a job with Buckerﬁeld’s driving a feed truck until the fall of 1986. In 1977, Norm and his son Doug, bought a chicken broiler farm on Bradner Road which he worked simultaneously with his truckdriving. When he took time to rest he loved spending time with his family playing cards, visiting, and watching hockey and baseball games. We would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Bevan Lodge for the kind and loving care he received over the past year. A memorial service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services, 27555 - 31st Avenue on Wednesday October 27th at 2 PM. A reception will follow at the Fraternal Order of Eagles hall located at 33868 Essendene Avenue at 3:00 PM.

We are sad to share the news of the passing of Sheila Taylor, beloved mother, grandmother, wife and sister. Sheila passed away peacefully at Menno Home on Oct 16th, 2010, after bravely battling brain cancer, for over 10 years. She has gone much too soon, she was but age 66. We are grateful that she is at peace now and surely with God. Born in Bournemouth, England, 1944, Sheila was the daughter of Thomas and Winnifred Thompson. She came to B.C. Canada with her family in 1957.Sheila had a passion for gardening, music, ﬁshing, camping and nature. She was a devoted and loving mother, and will be forever remembered with love. Sheila is survived by her husband Philip Meehan, sister Gillian Hayward, daughter Shandelle Caress Bruns,(Gregory Bruns) grandchildren, Anastasia Eve, Angelise Eden and Mason Dexter Bruns; her sons, Maxwell Sheldon Taylor and Paul Wright, (Kim Bork) and grandson Morgan Robert Wright as well as her beloved little dog Moxie. On the comeback trail After two injury-plagued seasons, John Armstrong is eager to make impact DanKINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS

The way the injury bug has been stalking John Armstrong the past couple of seasons, you almost couldn’t blame him if he stocked up on horseshoes and rabbit’s feet in an effort to change his luck. Take the NHL preseason game between the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks on Sept. 21, for instance. During the third period, a point shot by Josh Meyers hit the stick of a Vancouver defenceman in front of the net and

deÅected upward. Somehow, the puck found the gap between Armstrong’s visor and cheekbone, and struck him in the right eye. The injury certainly could have been worse – Armstrong got two stitches to close the cut, and sat out a week of training camp as a precautionary measure. But after missing huge chunks of the past two seasons due to a pair of surgical procedures on his shoulder, it would

have been understandable if Armstrong began to wondered whether he’d done something to anger the hockey gods. “I thought about that a few times,” the 22-year-old Abbotsford Heat centre acknowledged with a chuckle. “But then someone told me that maybe I’m just getting all my injuries out of the way early in my career, and I’ll be healthy for the rest of it.” That glass-half-full perspective has been a boon to Armstrong as he’s waded

through more than his share of adversity since turning pro in 2008. Armstrong, a third-round pick by the NHL parent Flames in 2006, had his rookie pro campaign with the Quad Cities Flames curtailed by shoulder surgery. The following season, he got into just 14 games with the Abbotsford Heat before it became clear that a second shoulder surgery was necessary. “My shoulder kept coming out again,” Armstrong explained. “The Ärst surgery Continued on page 9

A“It really isn’t relevant to us wheth-

er we’re the youngest or the oldest or somewhere in between. What’s really important to us is getting better every day, both individually

and collectively as a group. We Änd things to address and improve upon, and I think the thing that’s the most important part of our group is that they’re good people. The character of the group is so important, and I think we’ve got good character.”

Q The Ärst game you had T.J. Brodie

in the lineup (Oct. 20 vs. the Chicago Wolves), the Heat got two power play goals. Is that coincidence, or is T.J. a guy who really generates offence from the point?

A“I think T.J. is a guy who makes the guys around him better, for sure. But we’ve spent a lot of time trying to get the details of the power play really clear. But for sure, T.J. has a really good skill set.”

this point. He’s out of our lineup now – for how long that time may be, I’m not sure – but it is what it is. We have things we have to deal with now, and my focal point is on the guys who are healthy, and making sure they’re ready to play. We’ll deal with John when he gets back. Certainly, it’s no different than Ryley Grantham (lower body) or Kris Chucko (neck). The doctors and trainers look after those guys, and my job is to look after the (healthy) players.”

MASK

Heat goalie Matt Keetley gives a guided tour of his new paint job Keetley’s fresh paint job is a nod to his passion for classic vehicles. In the off-season, the 24-year-old goalie has been working on restoring a ’69 Chevy short box truck. “My last three masks were all about hell and the devil,” he said. “You pull that thing off (after a game) and it’s kind of depressing. I thought I would change it up to something that’s a little more fun.”

The graphic on the top of the mask reads “Keets Speed Shop, est. 1986.” Keetley was born in ’86, and the two dice in the centre represent his jersey number (33).

The back of the helmet features a white cross with LBT inscribed on the cenre. It’s a tribute to a Keetley family friend nicknamed “Laid-Back Tom” who passed away a couple years ago. Keetley’s previous mask also featured an LBT graphic.

G U I D E The Calgary Flames, the Heat’s NHL parent club, cover the cost of a new mask and paint job every season for the goalies in the organization. Keetley’s mask last year, which featured Heath Ledger as the Joker from the Älm The Dark Knight, was very popular with young fans. “The mask is the only piece of gear I keep each year,” he said. “In my basement, I’m setting up a shelf to display all my masks.”

The car depicted on either side of the mask is a “rat rod,” a strippeddown roadster from the pre-World War II era.

The winged apple on the back of the mask is a takeoff on the Von Dutch clothing company’s “Åying eyeball” logo. It’s a tribute to Keetley’s wife Carlene, who works as a teacher back home in Medicine Hat, Alta. “I don’t get to see her as much as I’d like to, so this reminds me of her,” Keetley said. worked, but I guess it wasn’t enough.” Armstrong went under the knife for a second time last January for a more serious surgery which involved a bone graft and moving muscles around to stabilize the joint. Armstrong went back home to Unionville, Ont. to convalesce after the procedure, and he said that the recovery period and ensuing rehab was a “pretty depressing” time in his life. “It was tough being at home when all my friends were out here in Abbotsford,” he said. “But I got strong again, and my shoulder feels better than ever now. “My range of motion on some things will never come back, but I’m not a baseball player. I don’t really need full range for hockey. It’s strong and sturdy, and it’s where all the doctors want it to be.” In coming back from a serious injury, rehabilitating the body is only the Ärst hurdle to overcome. Armstrong got off

to a bit of a slow start to the 2010-11 season as he acclimatized to game speed, and rebuilt his conÄdence. His Ärst goal of the season, on Oct. 16 against the Rockford IceHogs, was a step in the right direction. Oddly enough, it had been exactly one calendar year since Armstrong’s last goal – on Oct. 16, 2009 against the Milwaukee Admirals. “It’s taken me a couple games more than I thought it would to get back in the ARMSTRONG routine of things,” he said. “I think I’ve just got to stop thinking the game so much and just go out there and work hard. “It feels really good to be back, though, just playing and being around the guys.” Through all Armstrong’s injury travails, the Calgary Flames are still

high on the big (6’2”, 200 pound) two-way centre. A couple of years ago, Armstrong made a strong push to crack the Flames’ roster out of training camp, and that performance has not been forgotten. General manager Darryl Sutter made several statements to the Calgary media over the summer touting his potential. “We see potential for him to develop into being a real solid third-line NHL player,” echoed Heat head coach Jim Playfair. “With the fact he’s missed some hockey, now he’s got to play catch-up. He’s another year older, there’s a year off his contract, and he’s got a timeline now where urgency comes into play with it. And I think he understands that. “We’re trying to get Johnny back to being an aggressive player – thinking aggressive, playing aggressive, not worrying about injuries. He’s a guy who’s really a year and a half behind in his development, so getting him up to speed is key.”

Learning to succeed in life Now that it been established that the Abbotsford Heat is the youngest team in the AHL, it is imperative to help these young players make the adjustment to pro hockey to give them the best chance for success. For many players, especially ones who have gone the major junior route, the everyday routine that is called life was taken care of for them. In some cases, these players haven’t lived at home since the age of 14 and doing laundry, paying bills, preparing meals, etc., was done by their billet families. Don’t get me wrong, being a billet for these young men is admirable and many families do it because they have kids of their own and are looking for these young men to be role models. Others want to be billets because they love hockey and this is their way of getting close to the game. The bottom line in many of these situations is that the everyday chores that our kids would do, these young hockey players would not have to do. The billet families would either do it for them so they can focus on the hockey – which is a crock – or the player simply wouldn’t do it because they would not recognize the authority in the house and simply would be there for the food and the bed. The primary difference between junior

and pro is that as fun as hockey is for all of these players, once you sign the contract, it is a JOB. Now, the safety net has been removed. YOU are now responsible for making sure that you are ready for the game. There is no one making

your favourite meal before the game, this is now up to you. You now have to Änd a place to live, do your laundry, pay your bills, shop for food, rent a place to live. For some players, this is overwhelming because the day to day life that you would have experienced had you not been in this “hockey all day” environment, was never there. There is a kitchen facility right in the dressing room, so that players have healthy choices when eating at the rink, but also ideas for when they are away. “It is important that these players be given as much information as possible when preparing their meals,” says Heat athletic trainer Brandon Thome. “It will allow our players, when they go to a supermarket, to know what is good for them and what they can avoid. It sounds simple, but if you have never shopped for groceries for yourself before, it can be daunting. Or you can just take the easy way out and get the convenience foods that more often than not, will not give you the nutrition that you need to succeed. Knowledge is power.” For some players, the transition from junior to pro is just on the ice. For most, the ice is just the beginning. Giving them as many tools off the ice as they have on the ice will be the key.

For young players, the safety net has been removed.

A“The hockey! For the price, for the family to enjoy profes-

sional hockey in our own back yard is great. I grew up in Toronto, and you couldn’t get Leafs tickets unless you inherited them or won them – they were always sold out. I got to go to a few games to watch Keon and Sittler and so on, but it wasn’t affordable.”

Q Who’s your favourite Heat player? A“It was (David) Van der Gulik, so I was really choked when

he left. But right now, I’d say it’s between Mitchl Wahl and Carter Bancks.”

Q How do you support the Heat when you’re away from the rink?

A“I’ve got a Twitter account called HeatFan63, and

I’ve connected it to a blog. Facebook and the (Abbotsford Heat) website are great, but sometimes they’re delayed in getting the information out. With Twitter, as soon as information is sent out about the Heat, I know about it, and it goes right to the blog. Also, the AHL isn’t big out here in the west yet, so if anything happens in the markets out east, I’ve got a couple of different boxes on the blog that have that information.”
