Jeffrey Goddard outside the courthouse in Abbotsford.

Accused child predator Jeffrey Goddard pleaded guilty Friday in Abbotsford provincial court to five of the 19 counts with which he has been charged. Goddard, 20, pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer, communicating via a computer to lure a child under 16, invitation to sexual touching, and two breach charges, on May 20 and Oct. 2. According to court records, Goddard is expected to enter guilty pleas on two additional breach charges on Feb. 21, when he returns to court for sentencing on the five guilty pleas. He was first charged in May with invitation to sexual touching after he befriended a 14-year-old boy in a social setting and maintained contact with him over the Internet and phone. Goddard was charged again in August with two counts of breaching his bail conditions after being spotted in the company of two boys, ages 12 and 15, at an electronics store. Conditions of his bail included that he not access the Internet, be in the company of chil-

dren under the age of 16, or visit places where children are expected to gather, such as recreation centres, daycares and parks. In early October, he faced three more breach charges after communicating online with three 13-year-old boys. He has been in custody since Oct. 7, and was denied bail. Thirteen more charges were laid in late November based on further information and evidence gathered by police between Feb. 23 and Oct. 6. At the time, police said Goddard had used three aliases on Facebook to interact with kids from the ages of 12 to 16. He also posted messages that he was a police officer and could offer ride-alongs in a patrol car. In total, Goddard had 19 charges against him: six counts of impersonating a police officer, 11 counts of breaching his bail conditions, and one count each of luring a child via a computer and invitation to sexual touching. A psychiatric or psychological report has been ordered to be presented at his next court appearance on Feb. 21. Sentencing is expected to take place the same day.

One of two men involved in a 13-year-old Abbotsford killing pleaded guilty Friday in Vancouver Supreme Court to conspiracy to commit murder. Ravinder (Robbie) Soomel, 31, was sentenced to five years in prison for his part in the killing of 20-year-old Jason Herle, who was gunned down by two men hiding in the bushes as he was leaving his parents’ King Road home with his girlfriend in November 1997.

Soomel and co-accused Tajinder (T.J.) Bains were each charged in August 2007 with first-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of conspiracy to commit murder. Bains, 36, entered his plea in December 2008 and was sentenced to three years. Soomel has been serving a life sentence for the 2000 shooting death of gang associate Gurpreet Sohi of Delta. Also sentenced to life for that murder was Gurwinder Mann. In October 2009, Soomel’s older brother, Rajinder (Raj), was the victim of a fatal shooting on Cambie

Uppal was a former associate of Soomel’s who was convicted of manslaughter in the Sohi murder and who was a Crown witness in the Herle killing. During his 2003 trial, Uppal alleged that Soomel was linked to the 1998 murder of newspaper publisher Tara Singh Hayer of Surrey. No charges have been laid in that killing.

Waits add stress Report reveals court delays by Vikki HOPES and Jeff NAGEL Abbotsford News

Abbotsford has one of the longest delays in the province for family and child protection hearings, according to a report released last week by the Provincial Court of B.C. Justice Delayed: A Report of the Provincial Court of British Columbia Concerning Judicial Resources lists Abbotsford as having the second longest delay for family hearings, with an average wait of 10 months for a half day in court, compared to the standard of four months. Chilliwack is the same

JOHN VAN PUTTEN

Abbotsford News

There are 10-month delays for family hearings and eight months for child protection hearings at Abbotsford Provincial court. as Abbotsford, while Prince George and Sechelt are the worst, with an 11-month wait each. Abbotsford is also among the worst for child protection hearings, with an average delay of eight months, compared to the standard three months. Four other cities have even longer delays. Prince

George and Vanderhoof have an 11-month wait, while Kelowna and Chilliwack are nine months. Karen McNeilly, a family lawyer with RDM Lawyers in Abbotsford, said the delays for family court matters are “inordinate” and cause added stress, for example, to parents waiting for child support or

access to their kids. “Everybody’s lives are held up when you’re trying to get things resolved in court,” she said. McNeilly said the waits can be attributed to criminal cases taking priority over family matters that are often considered non-urgent, and to the Abbotsford courthouse being relatively small.

There are more family matters than the courthouse can accommodate in a reasonable time frame, she said. The provincial report summarizes the delays – and those in criminal and civil cases – are due to a chronic shortage of judges in provincial court. There are 17 fewer judges than in 2005 and the current 130 judges aren’t able to keep up with the number of incoming cases, the report states. It lists the 10 cities with the longest delays in criminal court matters, but Abbotsford is not among them. Surrey and Terrace face the worst delays in the province, with 15-month waits for a half-day adult criminal trial – far in excess of the provincial standard that 90 per cent of such trials proceed within six months. In Surrey alone, the report says, it would take three more fulltime judges hearing Continued on A7

REPTILE GUY GETS GATOR Mike Hopcraft, also known at the “Reptile Guy,” planned to move an 8.5-foot alligator from Langley yesterday afternoon (after press deadline) and transfer it to his rescue facility in Abbotsford. Hopcraft gathered a small group of people to help him move the alligator, estimated to weigh more than 250 pounds. The reptile was surrendered to his facility on Peardonville Road after Hopcraft received government approval for the transfer. The alligator had lived in the same enclosure with limited human contact for most of its life. Staff from the Greater Vancouver Zoo were on hand to examine it before the transfer.

tigation by RCMP uncovered an estimated 60,000 poppy plants that were being grown in a seven-acre field in Chilliwack. The field is believed to be the largest opium crop ever located by police in Canada. The crop was estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Investigators believed the opium was being grown to produce a substance known as doda, a powder which is often taken with tea or hot water to produce a quick high. Police said other more potent drugs, such as heroin, can be refined from the plants.

strictly criminal trials two years to restore wait times to appropriate levels. Administrative Crown counsel Kimberly Jansen said Abbotsford is not facing the same delays in criminal matters that some other jurisdictions are experiencing. She said it was difficult to pinpoint the specific reasons for that. However, the report warns that more accused criminals will walk free across the province because the shortage of judges is putting thousands of cases at risk of being thrown out due to unacceptable delays. “The current inventory of uncompleted cases is growing markedly, as is the delay for all case types other than youth court prosecutions,” states the report. “Increasingly, the court is failing to meet its legal obligation to provide timely access to justice.” There are now 16,000 cases that have been

before the courts for more than 180 days, it says. “While it is not possible to predict the number of cases that will be stayed for unreasonable delay, thousands of cases are at risk.” Compared to 2005, there were 900 fewer trial days scheduled in 2010 and there will be 1,600 fewer next year unless more judges are appointed. Adult criminal cases aren’t the only ones affected. “Over the last year there has been a dramatic increase in the delay and volume of uncompleted civil, family and child protection cases,” the report says. Individual judges have also spoke out in recent months about the lengthy system delays that have forced them to toss out cases ranging from impaired driving to drug dealing. More judges alone won’t cure the backlog – the report says more prosecutors, defence lawyers, clerks, sheriffs and court space will also be required.

A green Christmas What do you want for Christmas this year? Do you want to be just another statistic of debt-plagued, conspicuous consumption – or do you want the satisfaction of knowing you’ve started to make a difference in the world, through the holidays and on through the year ahead? We are told that average household waste increases by as much as 25 per cent over the Christmas season. Now would be a good time, particularly for the average cash-strapped consumer, to take a hard look at those disposables we buy now and trash at the end of the season. Are they all absolutely necessary? Can we reduce, reuse and recycle? Wrapping paper and decorations, tend to get bought, thrown away and re-bought year after year. Some waste is unavoidable, but where possible, we should conserve what we use this year, and reuse old supplies. And we can make sure that, once the merrymaking is over, the disposables go into the right recy-

cling bins or to the right depots. If you are in the fortunate situation of having more food supplies than you need, consider donating the nonperishables to the local food banks. And if you have household goods you no longer use, consider donating them to a charity which will enable them to be used by others. Donations of clothing, decorations and blankets, for example, can be of immeasurable value. Of the average $750 the Consumer Electronics Association tells us each household in North America plans to spend on gifts each year, some $232 will be spent on electronics. But, as you upgrade, remember that electronics, too, can be recycled – either through donations and resale, or through collection locations. Consideration for our neighbours – and for the planet – is a gift that costs each of us far less than most of our extravagant gew-gaws. – Black Press

Don’t sacrifice set election dates Tom

Fletcher

B.C. Views Christy Clark could run in a byelection if she wins the B.C. Liberal leadership vote in February, but she is leaning towards an early general election instead. B.C. became the first jurisdiction in Canada to establish a four-year schedule for elections in 2001, blocking a majority government’s ability to call surprise elections for political advantage. The new premier would have to change legislation that sets the next election for the second Tuesday in May, 2013. A schedule for elections is in my view the most important democratic reform achieved in Canada in the last decade. Ontario has followed suit. So has the Conservative federal government, although you wouldn’t notice it as the long run of unstable minority rule has prevented it from taking effect. Clark is the only unelected candidate

seeking the B.C. Liberal leadership, but she suggests that whoever becomes premier should call an election. “I think two and a half years in government as an unelected premier is an awful long time,” Clark said last week. “I think British Columbians might be right to say, by the time 2013 rolls around, hey, you were elected by people who had to pay in order to vote for you. We want to have a chance to vote for you under the basic principles of democracy.” Clark is the education minister-turnedhotline host who served as deputy premier in Premier Gordon Campbell’s firstterm cabinet. That was the cabinet that enacted set election days, amid much fanfare about cleaning up B.C. politics. Campbell is expected to retire as MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey some time after B.C. Liberal Party members vote for a new leader on Feb. 26. If Clark wins, Campbell would make way for a by-election where Clark could run in a relatively safe seat. Shuswap MLA George Abbott has argued that the B.C. Liberal government needs two and a half years to set a new course and regain the trust of voters disillusioned over the introduction of

the harmonized sales tax. He and other candidates have called for the date of a province-wide vote on the HST to be moved up to June. Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong agrees that the schedule of elections every four years is an important electoral reform. The only change he would support is to shift the scheduled date to

A schedule for elections is in my view the most important democratic reform achieved in Canada in the last decade the fall, so the annual provincial budget isn’t disrupted every four years by a spring election. The modern-day master of calling snap elections for political gain was Jean Chrétien. He accomplished little in a decade beyond perpetuating his own

hold on power, calling early elections in 1997 and 2000 to prey on weak and divided opposition parties. Clark came of age politically with the Chrétien-era federal Liberals, and has shown the same opportunistic eye as the little guy from Shawinigan. The NDP is leaderless, rudderless and presenting as tempting a target as Stockwell Day in his legendary wetsuit. Would there be some kind of campaign about ideas if a B.C. election were to be held next year? No. It would almost unavoidably devolve into a referendum on the harmonized sales tax, which is why Clark wants to ditch the tax first. Would Clark, or any of the other contenders for that matter, run on a platform of keeping the HST? They all claim to support the tax, but would they stake their shiny new premiership on it? I very much doubt it. The likely strategy would be to sacrifice the HST, and then the scheduled election law. Two sensible reforms, discarded. Lack of city animal shelter a disgrace

An open letter to Mayor George Peary: It is a total disgrace that Abbotsford does not have its own animal shelter. I deal with many rescue groups and when I say I am from Abbotsford, they call us the “City of no Compassion” and I certainly can’t argue that. It saddens me to the core. I disagree with your statement, in our phone conversation, that a proposed shelter is too costly. I believe it would not amount to one-eighth of what the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) cost. And, instead of paying another district over $420,000, you

could actually create 10 or 12 jobs. Since before this council and you took office, I have been requesting that we erect our own animal shelter. You actually gave me false hope when I appeared before you almost two years ago. As one of the fastest growing cities in B.C., it is shameful what is happening here. The pound is closing in less than a week, and rescue groups are scurrying to find homes for the animals caught in red tape. When I ask where can we take any animals left, I am told, “We are in negotiations...” and “No animals will be killed.”

What will happen to ones turned in the last week? Who will house them? I am not getting any solid answers and time is running out. Please, help those that cannot help themselves. You are working for us and there are a great many people phoning me and asking what council is doing about this situation. My honest answer is that I really don’t know. However, I am really depending on you to ensure the safety of the animals that the rescue groups might miss. I am here and will assist in anyway I can. Also, it does appear my pleas are fall-

Reconsider Maplewood staffing

For many years now, I have been visiting friends who are residents of Maplewood House and I’ve always been so impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and the wonderful staff who care for these people, day in and day out. Some years ago I was invited to join the Adult Day Program and I attend regularly each Tuesday, and again, I cannot say enough good things about the care and consideration that the staff

extend to us. It has come to my attention that these circumstances are about to change, and not for the better, I think. The care staff have been given notice and are to be replaced by others who will work for a lot less. I’m thinking, will work a lot less, and not care nearly as much. These people deserve the very best and if you have to pay more for those services, then so be it. Change is the very last thing that elderly people need

Bacon’s sentence reveals flaws Wow. Just wow. Jamie Bacon, a known and convicted gangster gets three years and eight months. Really? That’s it? He gets 40 months for time spent in custody under what his lawyer says is “torture” and “horrendous” and “deplorable” conditions. What is wrong with this country? What’s wrong with these judges? We are the laughing stock of the world. And criminals know it. It’s time the people of this country stand up and stop this insanity of giving criminals better treatment than their victims. How does living with heat, water, a toilet and three square meals a day constitute torture? I pray sooner or later we laissez-faire Canadians take to the streets and demand change. Please, reconsider the decision and keep the well-oiled staff that you have now. Maplewood House is so lucky to have them, and the quality of care will decidedly go down if new people are brought in. Christian singer Michael W. Smith brought his It’s a Wonderful Christmas Tour to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) Friday night. Thousands of fans came out to cheer their musical hero as he performed a variety of hits and holiday classics. While unable to release the final number of tickets sold – by request of the promoter – Jason Blumenfeld,

new general manager of the AESC said the event was a sellout. “It was a great show. Things went perfectly,” said Blumenfeld. Only in his second week at the centre, the holiday show was Blumenfeld’s first opportunity to see the building and his staff in action. “This is a great facility and I’m still working with staff to see how it all went,” he said. The concert was the final public event this year, except for Abbotsford Heat hock-

and having some fun.” Q If goals could be gift-wrapped, the Heat would love to find a pile of them under the Christmas tree. Goals have been an exceedingly rare commodity over the past month for Abbotsford’s AHLers. Over their last 15 games, the Heat have mustered just 23 goals (not counting shootout game-winners), and only twice during that span were they able to score as many as three in a game. “I think we’re making mental-fatigue mistakes,” Playfair said. “We’re missing the net, we’re not bearing down on our second chances.” Matt Keith, the Heat’s top sniper with 12 tallies, snapped a ninegame goalless drought on Saturday against the Adirondack Phantoms. That was the good news. The bad news was that it was Abbotsford’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss. “You put pressure on yourself and you want to produce,” he said. “But you kind of realize as you get older that you don’t need to sit and worry about it. I know what I have to do to get out of it. I hope that scoring on Saturday is a sign of things to come.” Keith pointed out

that the Heat excel at executing the defensive details of the game. Now it’s a matter of translating that efficiency to the offensive end. “It’s not from a lack of effort,” he said. “It’s not that guys don’t want to score or want to make plays. We have to stick with it, and it’ll come.” Q On the injury front, Playfair said Mitch Wahl has undergone surgery for a broken cheekbone. The rookie centre was felled by a huge open-ice hit from Manitoba Moose winger Aaron Volpatti on Nov. 27, and left on a stretcher. Other players currently sidelined include Carter Bancks (concussion), Gaelan Patterson (concussion), John Negrin (knee surgery), and Kris Chucko (concussion). Of that group, Playfair said Chucko is the only one whose recovery is considered to be long-term, so reinforcements could be forthcoming after the Christmas break. Q The Heat practice Tuesday and Wednesday before dispersing for the holidays. Players and coaches return Dec. 27 to prepare for a pair of home-ice tilts with the Texas Stars on Dec. 30-31.

Blyth’s buzzer-beater bests Hawks Dan KINVIG

Abbotsford News

In basketball, when you hold your opponent to 45 points, you generally expect to be celebrating when the final buzzer sounds. The W.J. Mouat senior boys

basketball team accomplished the first half of that scenario against the Walnut Grove Gators in the final of their home Hawkball Tournament on Saturday, but came out on the wrong end of a 45-44 score. The Hawks led by one point

with 1.9 seconds left, with the Gators inbounding under Mouat’s basket. But Walnut Grove forward Larry Blyth broke the Hawks’ hearts, catching a pass and swishing a fadeaway jumper as time expired. Continued on A15

The Abbotsford Pilots busted out of a slump in decisive fashion, as they defeated the North Delta Devils and Mission Icebreakers on the weekend. The victories – 8-2 over North Delta on Friday at MSA Arena,

and 4-3 over the Icebreakers in Mission on Sunday – were welcome results for the local junior B club, which had won just one of their previous nine games. “It’s huge for us,” Pilots coach Jim Cowden said, acknowledging the psychological effect of winning after a month-long

Gators clinch Hawkball title

IN CELEBRATION OF OUR

From A13

“You hold a team to 45 points, and you’re usually on the receiving end of a W,” Hawks coach Sean Beasley noted with a wry chuckle. “But they’re a very good defensive team as well.” Mouat led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but they just couldn’t put away the gritty Gators. Free throw shooting contributed greatly to the Hawks’ downfall – they hit just 12 of 25 attempts from the charity stripe, including six misses in a row in the late stages of the game. “Down the stretch, we had a real tough time finishing,” Beasley said. “There was a play where we had three offensive rebounds in the same possession, and it was like there was a lid on the hoop – the ball just wouldn’t drop for us.” Blyth scored a game-high 20 points in the final en route to Hawkball MVP honours. Cam Friesen, Mouat’s Grade 11 power forward, was named top defensive player. Josh Beasley (11 points) and Mackenzie Thompson (10) scored in double figures for the Hawks, while Sunny Johal pulled down 11 rebounds.

Cold spurs record blanket drive

Facing predictions for severe winter weather this year, the 16th annual Realtors Care Blanket Drive received its most overwhelming response ever. The drive, which officially took place from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6, collected 5,186 bags of clothing, coats and blankets for dozens of charities across the Lower Mainland. “One of our largest charity recipients in the Fraser Valley told us that the donations were so generous this year that they’ll have enough warm clothing to distribute to people who need it until next spring,” said Deanna Horn, president of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board. “Our drive may last only 10 days, but the assistance lasts for months. This has got to make blanket drive supporters feel so good to know the difference they’re making.” Support for the Drive, now the largest collection of its kind in the Lower Mainland, ranges from individuals to corporations and retailers, all partnering with local realtors to round-up quality items. In Coquitlam, West49 donated all the jackets (nearly 150) they received from their trade-in program. In Surrey, Terasen Gas employees again held their own mini-campaign collecting 69 bags of donations, as well

as the company issuing a cheque to one of the Drive’s recipient charities. For the third year in a row, one of Vancouver’s largest clothing wholesalers, FX Fashion Exchange, donated dozens of boxes and bags of brand new men’s and women’s clothing and coats. “The Blanket Drive has always relied on the efforts of our volunteers and the support of our communities,” said Jake Moldowan, president of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver. “Seeing a response of this magnitude, I think everyone involved across the Lower Mainland deserves a pat on the back.” Kyle Hislop, president of the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board added, “We’ve only been at this for five years now, but the response this year has been one of the strongest. “When you think about the Blanket Drive being around for as long as it has, it’s pretty amazing to think about how much it has grown and the influence it has developed.” The previous best year for the blanket drive was in 2009 when realtors collected 4,396 bags. Since its inception in 1994, the Blanket Drive has collected more than 27,000 bags of blankets, coats, winter clothing and other items.

I was born and raised here in Abbotsford. I grew up on a farm in Mt. Lehman – and helped my dad and mom build spec homes locally through the 70s and early 80s. My family has watched this town grow from the small farming community it once was to the city it’s becoming today. When looking for a realtor to work with in today’s busy and competitive market, it’s important to choose someone who knows the history of the area, who understands the “whys” and the “hows” and can help you navigate the highs and the lows of buying and selling a house. If you’re like most, a home is the largest and most important investment you’ll ever make. It’s my job to provide you with the support, the information and the know-how that will help you make the best decision for you and for your family.

Hello again everyone! Hope you are well. I have now been selling real estate with Homelife in Abbotsford for almost 12 years! Wow does time fly! I have met many friends along the way and wanted to say thank you again for their support and referrals! Given the opportunity I will work hard to protect your interests and have the knowledge and experience to do so. I sometimes hear people say “oh I have seen your ad with the dog, I wish I would have called you when I bought or sold”. My hope is to hear that a little less this year! Give me a call and you will be pleased you did. I look forward to earning your business. Bailey (my dog) and I are awaiting your call. Dave Bishop

I was born and raised on a farm in Abbotsford and have lived here all my life. I’ve been very fortunate to have a well rounded career that has given me the tools to become a successful Realtor today. I worked in construction for a few years after graduation and then moved on to many years of sales at Blackwood Building Center. This is where I met a lot of great people and learned more about the building industry. After Blackwood’s I moved on to Agricultural Equipment and Sales industry where I met more great people over the next years. All the while I owned and ran my own poultry farm. I went on to help manage a large farming operation for a friend which included many types of poultry farms, hatcheries, organic dairy and a Sawdust supply trucking company. Real Estate seemed like a great fit for me so I got my real estate license and started selling homes and farms in 2004. My experience and hard work ethics has helped me to become one of Fraser Valley’s Top Realtors, becoming a Medallion Club award winner as well as receiving the Re/Max Hall of Fame Award. I believe that honesty and integrity will always bring you positive results and look forward to many years of meeting old friends and making new ones. If you are thinking of buying or selling anytime soon, contact me at

Bill has been a full time Real Estate Professional since 2000. His strong work ethic, integrity and professionalism have earned him the respect of his colleagues and many satisfied clients. He has a passion for buying and selling revenue properties including owning a Mobile Home Park for several years. He gets great pleasure working with first time home buyers and showing them how to enter the Real Estate marketplace. Whether it is buying or selling a home or an investment property, Bill has the expertise to assist you in attaining your goals.

Born and raised in Abbotsford, I love living in the Fraser Valley and have always had an interest in Real Estate. I am as devoted to my career as I am to my growing family. When thinking of your next Real Estate transaction remember that you need a plan. A well thought out plan is the bridge to reaching your goals. As your Realtor I can ensure that working with me will help you establish your plan and to reach your Real Estate goals. “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.” My personal goal is ensuring that my Client’s Real Estate transaction is given 100% from start to finish. My Real Estate business flourishes on word of mouth. The greatest compliment I could receive is your trust and confidence. I’m never too busy for the referral of your friends and family. Whether they are looking to Buy or Sell, their Real Estate needs will be met with experience and integrity.

Flowers add festive fragrance

If you enjoy having fresh cut flowers in your home, especially during the Christmas season, take a look at some of the many new, long-lasting varieties now available. They add so much colour and fragrance to the festive season, and with proper care, their lifespan can be almost doubled. Cleanliness is the single most important factor in making fresh flowers last. Dirty vases are no place for fresh flowers. Not only should they be clean, but a few drops of bleach should also be added to the water to kill any bacteria that can reduce the capillary action of water flowing up the stems. The water should be warm, and the addition of floral preservatives will greatly extend the lifespan of your cut flowers. It is always a good idea to re-cut the stems on all fresh flowers the moment you receive them, but it is very important for you to make that cut while the end of the stem is held underwater. Another re-cut should be done in about a week to keep that water flowing. Research has also proven that exposure to constant, rather than fluctuating temperatures, increases the lifespan of flowers. In other words, keep them at a reasonably cool room temperature rather than in a hot sunroom by day and in the cold at night. I would never discourage anyone from picking up fresh cinnamon-scented carnations or long lasting chrysanthemums at this time of year. However, I would suggest trying a few different flowers that have great keeping qualities as well. Locally grown anthuriums are not only exotic but also stunning looking, especially when combined with Christmas greens and berries. They are also very reasonably priced, as are cymbidium orchid stems, another long-lasting flower. Colourful, exotic alstromerias fit in nicely with any bouquet and will go the distance,

Tulips, pussy willows and irises push aside those winter blues. I’m fond of statice, and if you did’nt save any from your garden, fresh imported bunches are available even now. Some of the most fragrant flowers are oriental lilies or even a small bouquet of freesia.

360 FABRICATION INC.

Service Industry

EXCELLENCE AWARD Sponsored by

FIRSTBASE SERVICES

The Service Industry Excellence Award is granted to a business in any sector that provides outstanding services to individuals or businesses. PRESENTED BY

Chamber of Commerce abbotsford

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OTHER NOMINEES IN THIS CATEGORY:

JOHN MORROW photo

Chris Johnston, Customer Relations Manager for Firstbase Services presents the award for Service Industry Excellence to Daryl and Rick Francoeur of 360 Fabrication Inc.

It wasn’t the first award for Abbotsford’s fast-growing 360 Fabrication Inc., but it was the biggest so far -- and it took the company’s owners by surprise. Rick and Daryl Francoeur’s vehicle customizing and collision services firm was the recipient of the Service Industry Excellence trophy at the 15th Abbotsford Business Excellence Awards. “I honestly think Daryl and I were a little shocked,” Rick Francoeur said. “Some very impressive companies were nominated and it was one of the biggest categories. “We’ve won lots of awards, but this is the biggest one, for sure. It was an honour just to take part in the event and we’re very grateful.” The award caps a highly successful year for 360, which opened only four years ago. The Francoeur brothers’ business moved to its own property at 31450 Peardonville Road, which is roughly double the size of its old facility on nearby Wheel Avenue. It also reached a landmark agreement with CARSTAR vehicle collision service, which will see 360 open nine more collision-

specific locations throughout B.C. “The expansion will allow 360’s new Abbotsford base to focus more on vehicle customization,” Rick Francoeur said. The 360 group customizes a variety of vehicles for other companies’ marketing purposes: Toyota and Red Bull are two of the high profile companies. 360 Fabrication also specializes in building custom cars and restoration for the public. Anything you can think of they can handle!

“We’ve won n lots of awards,, but this is the biiggest one, for sure”

The firm now employs 22 staff, up from just three when it opened its doors in 2006, and Francoeur envisions that number could rise to 30 by next summer. “We’ve had our failures too, but we just keep going, and we’re willing to learn from others’ mistakes as well,” he said. “We’ve had a clear business plan from the start and have just kept pushing forward. I think it shows that hard work and determination still equal success.”
