Family disappointed with crash charge
NewsBytes HOSPICE CONTRACTOR The Ledcor Group of Companies has been announced as the general contractor for the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s (AHS) new hospice that will be built as part of the Campus of Care Project next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Ledcor is also the general contractor for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice being built on the same property. That project has been named Dave Lede House, after Ledcor’s CEO and biggest donor. In addition to the Abbotsford Hospice and Canuck Place, the Campus of Care includes Matthew’s House, a respite facility for children with severe disabilities.

Police believe drive-by shooting was not gang related

A bullet from one of the shots fired during a drive-by shooting Friday night in Abbotsford lodged in a wall above some children’s shoes, Const. Ian MacDonald said. No one was hurt in the incident, but Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said. said the location of the bullet shocked officers on the scene. Two young children and four adults were home at the time of the shooting in the 32900 block of Gatefield Avenue.
The motive for the shooting is still vague, but MacDonald said police do not believe gangs or drugs are involved. “By looking at the background of the people involved .... we don’t see any links.”. The residents have lived in the home for seven or eight years, MacDonald said. Several callers reported hearing shots being fired at about 10 p.m. When police arrived on the scene, they located shell casings and observed that four rounds had struck the home. MacDonald said two of the shots entered the house.
According to witnesses, the suspects fled in a black Ford F-150 XTR pickup truck. MacDonald said the shooting differs from one that occurred on Hope Road on Feb. 20. In that incident, shots were fired at the wrong home and were believed to be intended for a known gang member living elsewhere on the street. MacDonald said police have no indication that anyone residing on Gatefield Avenue is linked to criminal activity. The investigation continues. Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association has had its fee for service agreement renewed by the city of Abbotsford for a cost of $100,000. The money had been allocated in the 2011 budget. The city has provided funds for restorative justice since 2003. The association provides a voice for victims of crime in the community and offers opportunities for offenders to restore harm that has been done.

First, Melody Jewell lost her 27-year-old daughter, Laurel Wilson, and the granddaughter with whom Laurel was seven months pregnant. Six months later, Melody’s husband, Ralph, succumbed to his injuries in hospital, while Melody and their two sons were by his side. Now, Melody said the family is disheartened by the news they received last Wednesday. They were told the man who allegedly triggered the accident that caused the three deaths was going to face a charge that was lighter than what police had recommended. The following day, a charge of driving with undue care and attention, under the Motor Vehicle Act, was formally laid against Shaun James Cochrane, 24, of Abbotsford. Police had recommended that Crown approve a criminal charge of dangerous driving causing death, but Const. Ian MacDonald said counsel maintained the incident did

An 89-year-old Abbotsford woman is still shaken following a home invasion early Sunday morning. Const. Ian
MacDonald said the woman was sleeping when the door of her apartment was kicked in, in the 2000 block of Gladwin Road at about 1:45 a.m. A man entered
her bedroom and demanded cash before fleeing. MacDonald said the culprit did not physically harm the woman or use any weapons, but the incident was terrifying
for the victim. Neighbours called police and provided a description of the suspect vehicle, which had sped away. Two men were arrested by police

Proposed recovery home city’s 11th Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
Abbotsford could be home to a new recovery house. Council was scheduled to discuss an application for supportive recovery use (SRU) for 33416 George Ferguson Way at yesterday’s meeting. If approved, it would become the 11th SRU in Abbotsford. City bylaws permit recovery homes in all suburban single family residential zones, on the condition that capacity is limited to 10 people (nine residents and one staff), a business licence is issued, and the home is located more than 200 metres away from any other SRU or school. The application was submitted by Surreybased VisionQuest Recovery Society. The group was formed in 1997 and currently operates six homes around the Lower Mainland, housing 90 men and women trying to battle addictions. At a neighbourhood consultation meeting, held Feb. 10, 12 members of the public attended, with the majority speaking in opposition to the application. The opposition included a 14-name petition. Concerns ranged from safety issues to property values. Despite these objections, city staff support the application, noting in the report that it meets requirements of the bylaw. “We have a number of these homes already and have had very few incidents,” said Mayor George Peary.

As the scope of the catastrophe in Japan unfolds, here in B.C. we should pause to reflect upon two things – first, the tragic loss of life to the earthquake and tsunami, and secondly, our own level of preparedness for such a natural disaster. Experts have long been warning that the B.C. coast sits on a major fault line. It is a matter of when, not if, a killer quake hits this area. There are serious lessons to be learned from this most recent crisis. In the days that followed Japan’s quake and tsunami, people were searching for water and food. Clearly, thousands of households – including those that escaped damage – were simply not prepared to handle such an emergency with the most basic supplies and plans. Are we? The answer is, for the majority, no. The ramifications of a major quake will be the same here as they are in Japan. Stores will be damaged, and
those that aren’t will be sold out of essential supplies in hours. Transportation will be severely interrupted. Telephone and Internet is likely to be down. So... do you have a survival kit in your home, with all family members familiar with its contents? Do you have a complete first aid kit, and sufficient knowledge to deal with basic trauma? Do you know how to turn off the gas in your home? Do you have alternate shelter in case your home is uninhabitable? Do you have a family plan as to what to do if a quake hits while you’re separated? Do you at least have enough water to last three days, for your entire family? Do you have enough food on hand to last that long, or longer? If you answered no to any of the above, you have a choice. You can become prepared now, or ignore this latest warning – at your peril.

Other Hand What seems to be endless rain and a spring that never arrives have been driving me crazy lately. Thanks to my puppy I have been out in rain, snow, sleet and hail while encouraging him to always take care of his bodily functions outside. Factor in a companion geriatric dog who is reluctant to face inclement weather, and the frustration of standing on the deck begging one to exit while keeping the other from running in and out, takes swearing to new heights. Oh yeah, life is tough, until it is compared with the horrific tsunami that devastated Japan. Never – not Banda Aceh or Hurricane Katrina – has the world viewed in such incredible detail, the destruction wrought by water. Japan, one of the most sophisticated and wealthiest countries in the world, has been brought to its knees by this cataclysmic event. Yet, knowing the spirit of the Japanese, they will overcome the
horrors and rebound with strength. The power of the water roaring through towns and cities was unimaginable, consuming everything in its path. To see a clip taken from a helicopter, what appeared to be a magnificently beautiful wave, a perfectly straight line of white surf steamrollering across the ocean, the sea receding hundreds of meters from shore to feed the oncoming juggernaut was stunning. Then to watch it follow a previous wave that had already dealt death and destruction was, without a doubt, one of the most chilling and frightening things I have witnessed, albeit from my living room armchair. For a country that has the resources, the knowledge and preparedness in place for mitigation of earthquake and tsunami damage, the destruction is almost incomprehensible. What then, will happen to areas like the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, where woefully little has been achieved in preparation for “the big one” that is sure to come? Despite the suggestion that Vancouver Island acts as a ‘breakwater’ for a tsunami, it will only if the wave is generated well offshore and to the south of us. If a subduction/uplifting of the earth’s
crust happens just a little northwest of Victoria, the ‘breakwater’ will have the opposite effect, funneling the tsunami down the Strait of Juan de Fuca, filling the Salish Sea (Georgia Strait) and spilling over the inadequate barrier dikes of Delta, Richmond and Surrey. I’d also guess that a substantial flow

Won’t happen here? It did in 1964, when a Richter 9 quake occurred in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, and a tsunami swept up the Alberni Canal some 40 miles, to flood with devastating effect the city of Port Alberni. So much for the ‘breakwater’ defence. In Sendai, which appeared to be one of the cities bearing the brunt of the
tidal surge, the residents had 30 minutes between the major quake and the wave. How much warning would we get here and where would the people in low-lying areas go? Ever try to get out of Richmond at rush hour? I don’t believe anything can prevent a tsunami the size of the one that hit Japan, from wreaking havoc on the Lower Mainland’s floodplain. And short of believing that it won’t happen soon, what can we do individually to prepare for a major earthquake? We are told to gather together emergency supplies, but if we store them in the house, and it falls down or gets washed away, not much good will come of that. So, do we continue to live in bliss or live in worry? Give me bliss (it doesn’t hurt that I live on a mountain) and the confidence that should I survive the initial event, I’ll survive the rest. Our governments, federal and provincial, however can’t afford the (perhaps naïve) luxury of blissful ignorance. We live on the ‘Ring of Fire’ and our economic and human strength depend on preparedness and all reasonable steps taken to mitigate the potential for the devastation that has so rocked the people and nation of Japan.

We are all feeling the crunch of higher taxes and increased costs, and I understand why many would flock to the U.S. to save a dollar. Friday’s earthquake off Japan was a test for B.C.’s tsunami alert system, with beaches and coastal areas briefly evacuated and on alert for several hours. It was also the latest in a long series of devastating events on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. Geological evidence indicates there have been 13 great earthquakes in the last 6,000 years. More recently, there have been four earthquakes of magnitude seven or higher in the past 130 years in southwest B.C. and northern Washington State, according to Natural Resources Canada’s Earth Sciences Centre. Hunt noted it also means less chlorine is added to disinfect the water, which was another objection some had about the taste of tap water. Ninety per cent of those surveyed now agree the tap water quality is excellent or very good – up from 82 per cent before, according to the Metro-commissioned survey. Bottle users cite convenience, taste, health and safety for their
choice. The campaign included advertising, social marketing and the launch of an iPhone app to help residents find free locations to refill water bottles with tap water. Several cities pledged to eliminate bottled water sold in their buildings. Metro is also spending $200,000 this year to acquire two water wagons that can be taken to major events as a mobile place where people can refill water bottles. Despite the survey results, Nestle Waters Canada claimed a five per cent increase in bottled water sales last year, although it had no data specific to Metro Vancouver.

Metro Vancouver is declaring victory in its campaign to get more people to shun wasteful bottled water and drink tap water instead. A new survey has found roughly half as many people using bottled water as did in 2008, when the region set a goal of cutting bottled water use here by 20 per cent by 2010. The Mustel Group telephone survey found 11 per cent of respondents say they primarily use bottled water, compared to 21 per cent in 2008, while 85 per cent say they mainly use tap water, up from 74 per cent previously. “We actually got a 50 per cent reduction so it was well beyond what we expected,� said Surrey Coun. Marvin Hunt, who sits on Metro’s water committee. The campaign, which used the slogan “Nature’s health drink – always on tap�, raised the hackles of bottled water sellers. But Metro politicians like Hunt maintain the campaign was worthwhile because high rates of bottled water use meant unacceptable numbers of plastic bottles were ending up in the landfill. One report estimated more than 23 million plastic bottles a year weren’t being recycled and were instead ending up in Metro
Vancouver landfills – and that even the ones being recycled still carried a heavy carbon footprint. “The issue was reduction of waste and reduction of the creation of the plastics in the first place so those resources can be used for something much more beneficial,� Hunt said. Metro officials were also irked by the growing trend toward bottled water use when they had just spent $800 million in taxpayers’ dollars on a major upgrade of the water system. Mounted in the grille aperture ahead of the radiator, the active grille shutters feature motorized horizontal vanes that can rotate through 90 degrees to block the airflow. Automatically controlled by the car’s electronic control unit, the vanes can be rotated into 15 different positions – from fully closed to fully open – depending on the amount of cooling air required. When fully closed, the reduction in drag means the active grille shutters can reduce CO2 emissions by 2 percent. eferring to the W.J. Mouat Hawks as drama queens might not sound like a compliment, but in this case, it’s an accolade of the highest order. The Hawks were at their best when the stakes were the highest, and their toughminded performance yielded the first B.C. high school girls AAA basketball championship in school history. Facing the Claremont Spartans of Victoria in Saturday’s title game at Capilano University, the Hawks built a 20-point lead late in the second quarter, only to watch the Spartans mount a gutsy rally to trim it to three in the final minute of regulation. But as had been their pattern all tournament long, the Mouat girls excelled at crunch time. After a defensive stop, senior guard Jaslyen Singh drove into the lane, drew the defence and slipped a bounce pass to Ashleyn Sarowa for a layup with five seconds left to seal a 69-64 victory. “It was scary,” Singh said with a smile. “We had a lapse when Claremont came back because we were playing individually. “But the fourth quarter is always our strongest, because we know we have to play as a team.” The title game was a fascinating study in contrasts. The Spartans were most comfortable slowing things down in the halfcourt and working the ball to 6’3” centre Shalie Dheensaw. Mouat, meanwhile, pushed the ball relentlessly in search of easy baskets. The Hawks took over in the second quarter and

Making history isn’t supposed to be easy, but the gauntlet the Columbia Bible College men’s volleyball team ran en route to the school’s first CCAA national championship was off the charts in its degree of difficulty. The Bearcats, seeded sixth at nationals, opened the tournament on Thursday against host and No. 3 seed Sherbrooke, and they knocked off the Quebec squad in straight sets. Up next was No. 2 seed Briercrest College of Caronport, Sask., and the CBC men out-lasted them in five hard-fought sets. Awaiting the Bearcats in Saturday’s final was the UBC-Okanagan Heat. The nation’s top-ranked team from Kelowna had beaten CBC in all three prior meetings this season, most recently in the provincial final on Feb. 26. But the ’Cats engineered an epic upset, snuffing the Heat in three set (31-29, 25-15, 28-26). “It’s hard to believe,” CBC head coach Rocky Olfert marveled. “We played our best volleyball at the right time of year. They trimmed the Mouat advantage to 53-47 through three quarters, and late in the fourth, backto-back three-pointers by Dheensaw and Shaylyn Crisp cut the lead to 67-64 with 53.3 seconds left. But the Hawks dug deep defensively, and Sarowa’s clutch basket set off the celebration. “It’s so amazing, so surreal,” Hawks star forward Kayli Sartori enthused. “It doesn’t feel like it actually happened yet.” Sartori was named tournament MVP after racking up 27 points and 10 rebounds in the title game, while Singh and Katie Brink were first and second team all-stars, respectively. “I’m so proud of them,” Mouat head coach Paula Thompson said. “This has been a long work in progress . . . We’re making history, so it’s pretty exciting.” Singh’s effort in the final was particularly gritty, after she suffered a broken nose in Friday’s semifinal win over South Kamloops. She tried a protective face shield in warmups, but chose to go without. “My peripheral (vision) was bad, my shot wasn’t going in, and I thought I’d take the risk – it was already broken,” Singh said. “I felt like nothing could stop me. I was more determined to go to the hoop, more determined to win the championship.” The Hawks are the third Abbotsford team to win the AAA girls crown, joining the 1984 Abby Senior Panthers and the 1999 MEI Eagles. Mouat’s previous best finish was second in 1985, when they fell 66-62 to Penticton in the title game.

Pilots stave off elimination
With their season on the line, Kevin Lourens and the Abbotsford Pilots responded in impressive fashion. Lourens notched a natural hat trick to power the Pilots to a 7-1 victory over the Port Moody Black Panthers on Saturday at MSA Arena. The Panthers had beaten the Pilots 3-2 on Friday to take a 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series, but Abbotsford’s victory on Saturday meant they’d live to fight another day. Game 6 went on Monday evening,
but the result was unavailable at press time. In the event of a Pilots win, the teams would return to MSA Arena for Game 7 tonight at 7 p.m. The Pilots have out-shot the Panthers by a huge margin in each game of the series, but goalie Nicholas Taylor has been outstanding for Port Moody. On Saturday, the Pilots finally got to him. “We really didn’t do anything different than we have been doing,” Pilots head coach Jim Cowden said. “We just got some goals.”
CIS HOOPS: Spartans win national silver, Cascades women eliminated Abbotsford natives Jacob Doerksen and Danny Horner helped the Trinity Western University men's basketball team to a silver medal at nationals in Halifax. The Spartans beat Lakehead and UBC en route to the final, where they fell 82-59 to the Carleton Ravens. Doerksen led the Spartans with 16 points and 12 rebounds. For both Doerksen and Horner, the game
marked the end of their five-year university basketball eligibility. Q The University of the Fraser Valley women's basketball team saw its surprising playoff run come to an end on Friday. The Cascades were eliminated in the semifinals of the CIS East Regional in Fredricton, falling 78-69 to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Alyssa Gaukel paced UFV with 14 points.

BYSTROM Ossian (Oscar) Sexton Ossian (Oscar) Sexton Bystrom passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord on Thur. March 10, 2011 at the age of 93 years. He was predeceased by his wife Hilda of 61 years, brother Terry, sister Alma and grandson Sean. He is survived by children Ray (Betty), Lynda Nemeth, Dorothy (Ray) Hill, Marilyn (Reg) Giesbrecht, Sharon (Ron) Voth, 16 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and sister Elvy (Ray) Rempel. He was known for his original spirit, sense of humour, and enjoyment of life. He was a lovable, independent character. A memorial service will be held at Abbotsford Baptist Church, 33651 Busby Street, Abbotsford on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road that same evening, from 7-8 pm. Ethel was born in Vermillion, Alberta on April 11, 1923. She passed away in Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm on March 12, 2011. Ethel was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Walter in 2001 and their youngest son, George, in 2010. Ethel was very proud of serving her country during WWII. She was stationed overseas in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. She joined the Royal Canadian Legion as an ex-service woman and recently received her 60 year membership pin. Over the years, she attended many functions and developed many long-lasting friendships. She always looked forward to and enjoyed the companionship of her many ex-service women friends. Mission was Ethel’s home for many years. She always loved the outdoors, working in her gardens, growing vegetables and lots of flowers. Ethel loved nature, animals, travelling, sewing, quilting and knitting. She was well known for her kind and caring ways; her door was always open to everyone. She had a great sense of humour and an award-winning smile. Ethel became the matriarch of the family, being the last surviving member of her generation. She will be sadly missed her children, Harv (Jolayne), Sharon (Pat), Kenneth (Tina-Marie) and Cheryl (Bill); 13 grandchildren and very proud of having 25 great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her faithful dog, “Kash”. A graveside service will take place in the Hatzic Cemetery, at 2:00 pm Thurs., March 17.
