Heroes honoured ‘They gave him the best chance’ Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

When they finally pulled their friend out of the water, after what seemed like an eternity spent searching, he was blue. Four employees of Abbotsford’s PNR Railworks were working in Peace River, and it was a hot July day in Alberta in 2009. The foursome knew of a water-filled quarry that would be the perfect place to cool off at the end of a sweaty work day spent laying railway track. Andrea Kellner (Abbotsford), Kevin Douglas (Langley), Scott Melenchuk (Chilliwack) and Bobby Yanciw (Calgary) all dove into the swimming hole. Bobby was the first out, sitting on a rock and waiting for the others to come to shore. But then they noticed he wasn’t resting where he had been. They swam in, calling his name, but getting no response. The only place left to search was the water. Andrea kept

The

search area was becoming larger. On his sixth dive, Scott felt the hand of his friend, and grabbing hold, he pulled the lifeless body to the surface. Kevin

and Andrea helped get him to shore. Bobby was greyish-blue, and his back was blotchy. His rescuers feared they might have found him too late. Scott could detect neither a pulse nor breathing. Andrea ran to get her phone to call 9-1-1. Scott started performing CPR, with chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth. He stopped and was sick. Kevin took over, until the emotions of working on their lifeless friend also got the best of him, and he too had to be sick. Scott resumed, and they shared the task. Andrea had walked away, fearing to see the result, but 9-1-1 told her to return to the scene, and relay information about the patient. Finally Bobby gasped, and choked back to life. Paramedics arrived and took him to Grande Prairie Hospital. When Herb Schmidt, the manager at PNR’s Abbotsford office, heard the first incident reports, it was that an employee had drowned. Bobby suffered severe organ failure. He was not expected to survive. Continued on A6

Report: Demolish Matsqui pool Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Plans have been made to demolish Matsqui Village Pool. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission have endorsed a staff recommendation to remove the old pool and create a new playground and washroom facility in the community park. However, local residents aren’t aware of those intentions, nor is Mayor George Peary, who said Tuesday that no final decision has been made by council. In June of this year, councillors voted to close the small community pool for the season after an inspection identified leaks in the tank that would be too costly to repair, and if left unaddressed, would allow chlo-

the park should be redeveloped with a new playground and washroom facility. Estimated costs were listed as $50,000 to dig up the tank and $75,000 for the new playground. While council has yet to vote for permanent closure, Peary said it may just be a matter of

time. Because they can only remain in operation for 10-14 weeks a year, Peary said outdoor pools are not financially feasible. “Even if council did have an extra million dollars to spend, we likely wouldn’t spend it on the pool – they are a dying breed.” Curtis De Fehr, a resident of Matsqui Village and an advocate of saving the pool, said the report is an example of “putting the cart before the horse.” Following the June closure decision, De Fehr said he was told that residents would be updated by the parks department. “To date, nobody has been contacted,” said De Fehr. But after about a week he was conscious for the first time, and his vitality kept improving. As his body came back to life, Bobby had a lengthy stay in hospital, needing dialysis for months, but eventually even his kidneys healed. He was back to work in June, having made a full recovery. He is an equipment operator, who drives a speed swing that lays steel for track. Schmidt was amazed by Bobby’s return to health, and proud of the three workers who made it possible. “They gave him the best chance he could get. They got him going,” said Schmidt. “I felt they needed to be recognized.” Thanks to his nomination, they will be. On Friday night,

at the company’s annual Christmas party, Scott, Andrea and Kevin will be presented with certificates of commendation from the governor general. “Your selfless actions are an inspiration to others and represent a high form of citizenship of which you can be very proud,” says a letter from Gabrielle D. Lappa, the director of honours at Canada’s Chancellery of Honours. Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen will present the awards on behalf of the governor general. “It’s cool. I was surprised,” said Andrea. “Our party has a 1950s theme this year, so I’ll be accepting it in a pink poodle skirt.” Looking back on the day they

saved their co-worker, she said, “it was all of us doing what we had to do.” TTTT The day he almost drowned is not Bobby’s favourite subject. He lost all memory of what happened, or how it was caused, but only remembers waking up in hospital. He had a long stay there, but has now made a complete recovery. He will be joining the Christmas festivities on Friday, and seeing his benefactors receive their national commendations. “I’ve said my thanks to them,” he said, but was heartened to see them receiving official accolades. “It’s excellent. They deserve it. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here today.”

The production also includes live animals, and one year she and her husband, Pastor Dave Schapansky, had a difficult time with a horse. “We were playing Joseph and Mary,” explained Dave, “and there was this horse named Applesauce.” Tammy is nervous around horses and the skittish animal would not keep still. “I was trying to calm the horse down, I just kept rubbing its nose, talking to it, and rubbing its nose some more,” said Dave. After the ordeal was over, he told the animal’s owner how unruly the horse behaved. The owner offered some advice. “Whatever you do, don’t rub its nose.”’ Dave is one of the event organizers and said more than 225 volunteers help the 1,200 cars pass through each year. Grandma wants jewelry back Celebrate Christmas CHILDREN’S

Abbotsford News

Audrey Mobley hopes that someone has seen her missing wedding rings – and 13 other pieces of jewelry. The 85-year-old Abbotsford woman believes the items were stolen by someone who worked for a company hired to clean her home, and were likely pawned. The most precious were two wedding sets – each an engagement ring and a wedding ring fused together – from her first and third marriages. Her first marriage ended in divorce, and her ex-husband died of lung cancer in 2008. Her husband from her third marriage died of prostate cancer in 2005. “I’m completely tied in knots,” she said of the theft. Mobley said she never previously had any problems with the housecleaning service that Veterans Affairs Canada paid to help out once a week since she had hip surgery in 2006.

JOHN VAN PUTTEN

Abbotsford News

Audrey Mobley believes a former cleaner responsible for theft. She qualified for the benefit because she worked in administration, mainly in Ottawa and on the Prairies, during the Second World War. Mobley had left her wedding rings in a small box in her bathroom cupboard. The other items were in her bedroom. When she noticed one of the wedding sets was missing, she assumed she had misplaced it.

The other pieces of jewelry went missing in mid-November after a new employee of the cleaning service had been in Mobley’s home for a second time. She dumped out drawers, looked through shelves and searched under furniture for the missing items, but came to only one conclusion. “I knew I hadn’t misplaced a whole pile of things.”

She called the woman’s boss, and then filed a report with police. Const. Ian MacDonald confir med that Abbotsford Police are investigating the incident, and have a suspect in mind. He said they even visited local pawn shops to try to find the jewelry. “Whatever’s happened with the jewelry, it has not surfaced in local regular places,” he said. Mobley has since been told the employee has been fired, and has likely left town. She hopes someone who has purchased the jewelry or has seen it will step forward. Mobley has three children, 13 grandkids and 17 great-grandchildren. Eighteen of them are girls, and she’s saving her jewelry to pass on to them when they turn either 21 or 40. “It’s so they have something nice and

good that they can look at and say, ‘That came from granny or great-granny’ and they can remember me.” One of the wedding sets contains three small leaves, each with two small diamonds, and a bigger centre diamond. The other set has a raised centre diamond. The engagement ring and the wedding ring each have five small diamonds. Most of the other items were purchased from the Shopping Channel. They include two silver-and-gold-plated bracelets, two pairs of earrings, two necklaces, and several rings, mostly in size 7 and 8. In addition to diamonds, the rings include stones such as pink sapphires, blue topaz, and tanzanite. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.

sioned, De Fehr said the city needs to restore the land to its original state and re-gift it back to the original owners or their descendants. De Fehr said there was an oral agreement, donating the land to the city on the condition it maintained the pool. City manager Frank Pizzuto said it is unlikely the city will give the land back. “I can’t see the city agreeing to maintain the pool forever … at some point this would change,” said Pizzuto, who acknowledged he was not fully familiar with the original agreement. Council will likely examine the staff recommendations in early 2011.

Time for second act

Arrogant, uninformed or disinterested? Which is it for Transportation Minister Shirley Bond, who is now blaming Metro Vancouver mayors for Evergreen Line delays and funding troubles? Her ministry has complete control over the project and has known for more than a year that the mayors oppose using property taxes to fund it, and yet she and her government have failed to come up with any solutions more creative than simply extending the deadline for TransLink to ante up its share of the $1.4 billion project. She’s quick to criticize but she bears some responsibility for the current impasse. Why, for example, has there been no progress on the memorandum of agreement signed this fall by regional mayors and the ministry? That was supposed to be the forum in which to discuss alternative funding, such as taxing rising property values around SkyTrain stations or giving

some carbon tax revenues to TransLink. Instead, there is nothing on the table but property taxes. But that well has run dry. It would be better to initiate a vehicle levy — which is also unpopular — but at least it ties car use to transportation infrastructure. Where is Bond’s commitment to providing a mechanism for collecting a vehicle levy? The provincial government can’t have it both ways. It created TransLink and decided a professional board and a mayors’ council were the way to balance regional politics with objective decision-making. If the province made sure it was funded adequately, there would be less criticism. Having hired the actors and written the play, it’s time for Bond and the province to lift the curtain on the second act of the Evergreen Line. – Black Press

B.C. Views Christy Clark is the second woman to enter the B.C. Liberal leadership contest. I mention this in case you forgot about Moira Stilwell, the Vancouver radiologist who led the way into the post-Gordon Campbell era in late November. Stilwell did her own diagnosis on the harmonized sales tax and concurred with mainstream economic theory. It’s efficient and it promotes personal savings as well as business investment. In medicine, if you believe the patient has the right prescription to improve her health, you don’t then look for ways to discontinue that medication as quickly as possible. But that’s the situation we have with our less scientific candidates. Clark didn’t always understand the HST, but she consistently supported it on her radio show before her splashy reentry into politics last week. So the lone “outsider” becomes the

fifth candidate to replace Campbell, after endorsing the tax that led to his sudden retirement. So apparently, the five are unanimous that the HST is a great idea, and all but Stilwell want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. One after another, the cabinet veterans sought to distance themselves. First George Abbott agreed with Stilwell that the new premier should move up the date of a province-wide referendum from September to June. Prognosis of patient not good, Abbott intoned. Then Kevin Falcon scrubbed in. Get the vote done as soon as possible, and maybe the HST can be revived if we slice a point or two off. Mike de Jong’s outlook was, well, grave. Cutting the rate would be like putting lipstick on the scars. This patient is terminal, so let’s pull the plug as inexpensively as possible. An election-style vote would cost $30 million, but a mail-in ballot could be done for less than half of that. By the time Clark arrived, the HST was a palliative care situation. Her only option for a fresh perspective was to move toward assisted suicide. OK,

let’s scrap the referendum, she said. It’s doomed anyway. Let’s go back to the legislature and have a “genuine free vote” where B.C. Liberal MLAs can reverse their earlier votes and throw it out. There are so many things wrong with this idea that it’s hard to know where to start.

While Clark spent the last four years getting in touch with families on her radio show, she lost touch with political reality. Mistake, said Abbott. “A real blunder,” said Falcon. De Jong said if he had to vote on the HST again, he’d support it like he did the first time. (NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston also believes scrapping the referendum now would be dumb, and it’s not often you’ll find him agreeing with Falcon.)

Clark’s “genuine” free vote would have to take place before she even has a seat in the legislature. It would divide the B.C. Liberal caucus again, unless her idea of a “genuine” free vote is everyone doing what she tells them to do. This plan would be a disaster. It shows that while Clark spent the last four years getting in touch with families on her radio show, she lost touch with political reality. Which brings us back to Stilwell. When I reached her on the campaign trail, she reaffirmed her support, and vowed again to campaign for the HST. Stilwell said people have earned the right to have a direct say, and she is “perplexed” that Clark would suggest taking that away. Stilwell remains hopeful that other benefits of the HST can still be discussed, giving it a chance for public support. In short, she remains logical and consistent in her approach. It’s no wonder she is given no chance to win. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Political theatre needs new actors Canadian politics has been described in many ways ranging from fascinating to boring. It can be both. Modifying an old observation somewhat I might, with some validity, in summary form describe Canadian politics thus: In the Atlantic provinces, politics is patronage; In Quebec, politics is “nationalism;” In Ontario, politics is business; In the Prairies, politics is populism; In B.C., politics is entertainment. In B.C., political theatre is having another fine year. The drama is now well underway. ACT I Believing what their government told them 20 months ago, the people of B.C. voted to abolish a tax which their government, before the last election, called a very bad tax. Now the government calls the people uninformed. ACT II Premier Campbell smiled on television. He made 15 per cent of the income tax disappear. He has a magic touch. The people rejoiced. ACT III Premier Campbell, again on television, did not smile but made himself disappear.

Premier Gordon Campbell has said he is leaving the government stage, but the political drama continues. His magic touch is impressive. The people rejoiced even more. ACT IV The Liberal cabinet did not appear on television but, Houdini-like, made the 15 per cent tax reappear. This is not the magic the people wished to see. The people did not rejoice; they groused. ACT V Despite riding high in the polls, the

Opposition NDP, not wanting to be left out of the entertainment, began to attack one another. Not wanting to be outdone by the Liberals, first one NDP harbinger of truth and then a baker’s dozen, tried to make leader Carol James disappear. Amazingly, they succeeded. That was no small feat. Houdini would have been impressed. Now it seems as if some of them are trying to make themselves or even their party disappear. Maybe they will succeed. I suggest they are taking entertainment too far. ACT VI Who knows what Act VI will bring. Will it bring Premier de Jong? Will it bring a new troupe? Will “the Zalm” be politically resurrected? A few decades ago Premier Dave Barrett said that B.C. had the best politicians money can buy. To that wit and wisdom we can now add that the province has political theatre second to none. In our cherished democracy the show goes on, but maybe we should look around for a new script and some new actors. John H. Redekop

Dunach chooses to Shine On this Christmas Preparing for school closure is an awful process and in the midst of it all, the Dunach community is once again going to produce a spectacular Christmas concert. My wife, a Dunach teacher, comes home each day, full of excitement for the concert and saddened by the realization that this is the last one at Dunach. Dunach has chosen the theme Shine On for its last Christmas concert. This is truly an amazing community – Dunach students and parents will be singing at the Abbotsford hospital on the same evening that the board of education will have all three readings to

close their school. I know that the board believes that it had to close Dunach in order to save money. I just wish they could see Mrs. JK as she sits in the Dunach gym at 11 p.m., after spending the evening working with parents, teachers, students and alumni, to put up the staging, backdrop, and 500-plus silver stars for the Christmas concert. I wish they could see Mr. Izatt on the scaffolding tying those stars to the gym rafters. I wish they could see Ms. Nowak and Mrs. Plank putting packing tape on the kids’ silhouettes that surround the gym walls. I wish they could see

Mrs. VanEgmond coming back to school at 8:30 p.m. to put up mini-lights around the backdrop. Most of all, I wish they could see my wife, as she works alongside her Dunach family to create a spectacular setting for their students, her tears marking the paper she is trying to cut. I am very proud of this courageous school community because I know they will do exactly what their concert theme says – they will Shine On. The Dunach legacy will continue long after the doors of the school are permanently locked and because of this, Dunach will never be closed. Brian Menagh

Abbotsford not a cycle-friendly community I agree with Mr. Ambrose that cyclists need to stay off the sidewalks. I think many cyclists use the sidewalks because they do not feel safe riding on the streets, with good reason. Abbotsford is not a bicycle friendly city. I consider myself an experienced, year-round cyclist –

it’s my main mode of transport. I ride as one should, with traffic, within two feet of the curb, helmet, running lights on all the time. A bicycle is a vehicle, unfortunately some drivers don’t see it that way. I’ve been cursed at many times that I should get off the road or use the sidewalk.

Anglican churches to file appeal Case to Supreme Court of Canada Vikki HOPES

Diocese of New Westminster. The two sides have been in conflict over the issue of same-sex blessings. The churches have maintained that the blessings are contrary to core Anglican doctrine, while the diocese supports them. The churches broke away from the Anglican Church of Canada – to which the diocese belongs – to join the Anglican Network in Canada in February 2008. Two previous decisions ruled against the churches. The first ruling was rendered in B.C. Supreme Court in November 2009. An appeal of that decision was then heard last month, which

Abbotsford News

St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in Abbotsford is among four parishes that are filing an appeal with Canada’s highest court. Trustees from the four churches have instructed their legal counsel to file an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, in response to a B.C. Court of Appeal decision reached on Nov. 15. The application must be submitted by Jan. 14. Last month’s decision removed the parishes’ rights to use their church buildings, because they are using their properties outside the jurisdiction of the

upheld the previous ruling. Ownership of the church properties was awarded to the diocese. Cheryl Chang, special legal counsel to the churches, said “much prayer and internal consultation was undertaken in reaching the decision to file the second appeal. “The precedent of this case will affect many faithful Christians throughout Canada, and there was a general consensus that this was not yet finished. The principles at stake are far too important to abandon, she said. A statement from the Diocese of New Westminster said Bishop Michael Ingham has not yet received a response on his offer to meet with the leaders of the four congregations to “discuss how everyone can move forward in keeping with the

decisions of the courts and appoint new clergy for these parishes. Leadership at the diocese said they do not believe there is a need for further court challenges, due to the expense and anxiety incurred. “However, they respect the plaintiffs’ right to request the Supreme court to hear their case as the final legal option available to them, the statement read. The Supreme Court of Canada is the last judicial resort in the nation, and both sides must abide by the decision reached there. In addition to St. Matthew’s in Abbotsford, three Vancouver churches are involved in the legal battle. They are St. John’s Shaugnessy, the Church of the Good Shepherd, and St. Matthias and St. Luke’s.

Immigrant women get work skills training

Kerrie-Ann SCHOENIT Abbotsford News

A b b o t s f o r d Community Services has created a new training and works skills program for disenfranchised immigrant women. Participants will learn how to run or be employed in a daycare setting. The curriculum covers a range of topics including child growth and development, health and nutrition, learning through play, and safety and emergency procedures. “The overall goal of this project was to break the isolation and alienation of abused immigrant women by providing them life skills,” said program facilitator Amandeep Pandher. “The second goal was to train immigrant women to obtain employment so that they can feel confident and adjust in this community. The first workshop highlighted janitorial, the second examines child care and the third deals with culinary. “We basically focus on their whole development emotionally, socially, physically and psychologically,” said Pandher. “We can help take them out of that grip in their past life so they can see a new world and give a new life to their kids.” The child care program begins Jan. 19 and is open to a maximum of eight women. Participants will attend training sessions twice a week for three months, followed by a practicum placement. For more information, contact Pandher at 604-832-1261.

Abbotsford News I Thursday, December 16, 2010

Quake risk flagged Red Nose sets record There’s a 30 per cent chance that an earthquake strong enough to cause significant damage will rock southwestern B.C. within 50 years. That estimate comes from the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, which has released a new report calling on Canada to accelerate the pace of seismic building and

infrastructure upgrades. “Public infrastructure in Canada appears highly vulnerable following decades of underinvestment, and may be severely challenged by a large earthquake,” the report says. It also warns that fires after a major earthquake have the potential to cause more damage than the shaking.

Operation Red Nose hit its alltime high when it offered 126 rides in Abbotsford last Saturday night. The clients donated $2,500, which goes to PacificSport Fraser Valley, to support high performance athletes and coaches in their pursuits. Friday night volunteers gave 97 passengers a safe ride home, which was the busiest Friday other than a New Year’s Eve.

More work must be done to earthquake-proof fire halls, reduce sources of ignition and ensure adequate and reliable water supplies. Central Vancouver is vulnerable, it says, because transformers mounted on wooden poles downtown may arc and explode in a quake, sparking fires inches from businesses.

The busy weekend brings the total to 459 rides in AbbotsfordMission so far this holiday season. Operation Red Nose can be reached at 1-877-604-NOSE. The remaining nights of service are Dec. 17, 18 and 31. Volunteers are needed, and those wishing to help should visit the website www.operationrednose. com.

TransLink picks smart card maker

MSA FORD helps raise over

Jeff NAGEL Black Press

The operator of London’s Oyster card payment system has been picked to design TransLink’s new smart cards and install turnstiles at SkyTrain and SeaBus stations. Cubic Transportation Systems, along with IBM Canada, are the preferred bidders who now advance to talks to finalize a contract likely worth around $170 million. Besides the Oyster system, Cubic runs transit smart card systems in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Miami and Brisbane, Australia, as well as the ticket vending machines on the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain lines. The federal and provincial governments are providing $70 million towards the costs. The system is to open in 2013 and Cubic/IBM would operate it for 10 years. TransLink has not yet released an estimate of the operating fees it will pay. Riders would load cash on their card and their account would be automatically debited. The system can charge by the exact distance travelled, but various fare options are possible, including ones giving unlimited travel for a certain number of days. The bid had some high-profile help. Ken Dobell, a former special adviser to premier Gordon Campbell and former TransLink CEO, lobbied on behalf of Cubic after thentransportation minister Kevin Falcon directed TransLink in 2007 to adopt turnstiles and smart cards. Some critics contend the system will be costly, won’t stop fare cheats and could be vulnerable to hackers. TransLink officials say it will make the transit system more convenient and efficient, deterring fare evasion while providing a stream of data on transit use planners can use to optimize routes and schedules. “This electronic card and gate system will create a safer environment for transit users,” transportation minister Shirley Bond said. The system will also accept contactless bankissued cars for tourists and other casual riders.

Cameron Lawson of the Port Moody Black Panthers had his shot turned aside by Abbotsford Pilots goalie Cole Chreptyk on Friday at MSA Arena.

Looking for answers Mired in a rare slump, Pilots would like a win before Christmas Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

To say the Abbotsford Pilots would like a win for Christmas is somewhat misleading. Certainly, if hockey victories could be given as Christmas gifts, the local junior B club could use one. The thing is, the Pilots still have three more games to go before Dec. 25, and they’re hoping they don’t have to wait that long. The Pilots are in the throes of a wicked slump at the moment, having compiled an unsightly 1-6-2 record over their past nine games. Last Friday’s 4-2 loss to the Port Moody Black Panthers at MSA Arena marked their fifth consecutive defeat. Pilots head coach Jim Cowden said that a win would go a long

way to getting his team back on responsibility for themselves, instead of bickering and blamtrack, confidence-wise. “To get one would be abso- ing other people.” Cowden declined to mention lutely huge,” he said. “We’re just going through one of those names, but he feels some of his players have an unhealthy prebumps in the road.” occupation with A slump, in its their own point tougliest form, is a tals. Junior B hockey at MSA Arena turn feeds the losing streak. One-goal deficits pijhl.com “If they weren’t seem insurmountthinking about able. slowly becoming whole again. Defenceman Brett Kolins returned to the lineup last week after an extended injury absence, and Brendan Nadolny (ankle), Adam Rossi (concussion), Cody Heinen (shoulder) and Ethan Gaines are expected back in the next few weeks. In light of their current slump, it’s remarkable that the Pilots (14-10-3) still hold down first place in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s Harold Brittain Conference. Their 31 points are one more than Port Moody – plus Abbotsford has a game in hand. “I believe in this team,” Cowden said. “No question, we’ve got the talent. We’ve got the most talent in the division. “We’ve just got to put the pieces of the puzzle together.”

The Abbotsford Heat’s formula for success this season, more often than not, has involved a bushel of saves from goalie Leland Irving, a gritty defensive performance from the skaters in front of him, and just enough offence to get by. The Heat executed that equation to perfection on Tuesday evening, opening a four-game road swing with to a 1-0 victory over the Rochester Americans at Blue Cross Arena. Irving, as he has so often this season, sparkled between the IRVING pipes for the Heat, stopping all 29 shots the Americans directed his way. He did his best work in the third period, repelling 11 pucks, including a highlightreel breakaway stop on Rochester forward Bates Battaglia. The victory marked Irving’s AHL-leading 15th of the season, as well as his third shutout of the campaign. The Heat goalie has already eclipsed his win total from 2009-10, when he struggled to find consistency en route to a 14-17-3 record. Ryan Stone supplied all the offence the Heat would require at 8:12 of the second period. On the Heat’s lone power play of the night,

Tell us a story about a child who lives with epilepsy and has a seizure. Tell us how it feels, what happens before, during and after the seizure. Tell us what to do, what are the first-aid steps we should follow. Tell us in your own words. Tell us how young children react to someone who has a seizure. Tell us what you think people should know about epilepsy. Through drawings, show us what happens during a seizure.

Home-Based Business EXCELLENCE AWARD Sponsored by

CLICK MEDIA WORKS

The Home-Based Business Award is granted to a home based business that has demonstrated excellence and quality in their product and/or service.

PRESENTED BY

Chamber of Commerce

JOHN MORROW photo

Rick Rake of Click Media Works presents the award for Home-Based Business to Sue Kavelman of Clayburn Comforts Soap & Bodyworks.

And the award goes to…

CLAYBURN COMFORTS SOAP & BODYWORKS

Sue Kavelman found a niche in linking small business with local history -- and her success has landed her a trophy. Kavelman’s Clayburn Comforts Soap and Body Works was the recipient of the Home-Based Business Excellence award at the 15th Abbotsford Business Excellence Awards. “I was totally surprised and very pleased and honoured,” Kavelman said. “You could have knocked me over with a feather. “When you work really hard for something for a long time, it’s nice to be appreciated and acknowledged, that’s for sure.” Located in the historic village of Clayburn, originally a brick-plant town established in 1905, Kavelman’s home-based store is the refurbished cottage of a former plant foreman. In a small building separate from her residence Kavelman makes and sells her line of self-made soaps and other aromatherapy products -- which includes a soap bar designed to replicate the old Clayburn company’s bricks.

Business has grown steadily since her store opened six years ago, she said, especially through tourism. She hired her first part-time assistant this year. Next up is an updating of her website, which will include the addition of an online shopping feature. Kavelman believes a commitment to top quality, all-natural products as well as the hands-on character of her shop have been keys to her success. “People can put a face to the person who made the product, I make it all right here,” she said. Kavelman said her business evolved from first taking courses in soap-making 12 years ago as a new hobby to enjoy with her daughter. Meantime she and her husband bought their century-old Clayburn home in 2000 and painstakingly refurbished it, literally brick by brick -- she estimates she had to clean 8,000 bricks in the process.

and acknowledged, that’s for sure.”

Great gifts for gardeners You may have already discovered this reality: when it comes to gardening gifts, passionate gardeners are very particular, so here are some suggestions that you might find helpful. There are so many great gardening books available today. It is well worth a browse in the gardening Brian section of your favourite book store. Gardeners love quality books with great information and lots of coloured photographs. The Sunset Western Garden Book is probably one of the most useful. You might also consider a gift subscription to one of our excellent local gardening magazines, like Gardens West or Gardenwise. At the high end of gardening gifts, a greenhouse is a present to be enjoyed for many years. My advice is to buy the best quality which usually means aluminium and glass construction. Greenhouses are a great way to extend the growing season and a useful place for winter storage of less hardy plants and bulbs. The latest trend in Europe is a conservatory added to the home. It’s a wonderful way to bring the outside inside and makes an awesome living space. A less expensive alternative is a windowsill greenhouse, which, by the way, makes a perfect spot to grow almost anything. If your gardener has a greenhouse, accessories such as heating pads and cables, quality watering accessories, like the world famous

Culinary Blossom

English Hawes watering cans, and maximum-minimum thermometers are always appreciated. Attracting wildlife to gardens has also become quite a trend these days. Birdbaths and birdbath heaters, feeders and bird houses are great gifts for children and shutins. Birding is the

number two leisure activity in North America, and birding accessories are a nice present for those who enjoy this hobby. During winter cold spells, the birds would appreciate some help. There are a whole host of gardening gift ideas like quality tools, gardeners’ soap, richly toned wind chimes and gar-

dening videos. There are also ergonomically designed tools for ease of use. For those gardeners who are finding it a little more difficult to kneel down and get back up, handy kneelers, which double as a seat, are awesome. Complete gardening wardrobes are available from gardening hats, gloves, aprons and footwear

Help is available. All day. Every day.

Kids’ Christmas Crafts, yummy treats courtesy of Angel Kiss Confections, and the vendors will be decorating their booths again. Lots of great gift ideas.

to knee pads and garden tool belts. A gift certificate to a favourite gardening store is also a valued treasure. Water in the garden is very popular these days, and everything from pre-formed ponds to pumps, fountains, filters, waterfalls and LED underwater lights are huge hits as gifts. A vanishing water feature, with water bubbling up through pre-drilled basalt stones, is the next big thing. A pump and kit that houses this beautiful patio feature makes a wonderful gift to be enjoyed for years. Today, many people are interested in growing vegetables and herbs indoors, and the best system is probably the fully automated Aero Garden. It’s easy and very productive. Indoor and outdoor echeveria and succulent gardens and wreaths are another hot trend. They are fabulous, very unique, colourful and easy to care for. Research has revealed that of all the gifts people receive, flowers make folks the happiest. Longlasting and perfumed Christmas bouquets with seasonal fragrant greens are a real treat anytime over the Christmas season. Gardeners love plants best of all and there are some wonderful new hardy plants they can enjoy in the late fall and winter. Bloomerang lilacs that bloom twice, winter blooming cherries, jasmine, viburnums and camellias are fabulous. Peeling bark maples, coral bark maples and contorted filberts and willows are a joy in winter. Pink Lemonade blueberries, the new haskap berries and dwarf sour cherries are the hot foods for 2011.

The Christmas kettle campaign is a key fundraiser for the Salvation Army.

The Christmas season serves as the prime fundraising period for the Salvation Army. The organization has set a 2010 goal of $475,000, which will keep programs and services running throughout 2010. Funds are raised through mail-in and drop-off contributions, as well as at the 13 red kettles set up at locations in Abbotsford and Mission. Volunteers are still needed to man the kettles for a minimum two-hour shift. Meanwhile, food and gift donations are also being accepted. These can be dropped off at either the Centre of Hope (34081 Gladys Ave.) or Cascade Community Church (35190 DeLair Rd.). Also operated by

the Salvation Army is the Angel Tree program at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre. There, the public can take a tag from the tree and purchase a new gift that matches the information provided. For more information about any of the programs, call 604-852-9305 or visit
