ADVERTORIAL

Roadshow is in Abbotsford Starting January 3! TERRY INKLER Canadian Collectors Roadshow Staff Writer After a very successful show in Delta, The Roadshow is now here in Abbotsford, BC. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold and silver. During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for jewellery she was never going to wear anyway.

Local Roadshow Expert Examines Some Gold Jewellery

Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the

amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”

content”. She explains, “I never would have thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can Ànally afford to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”.

At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grandfather. She Ànally decided to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare. Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver

Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky

Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, we can always make an offer to buy it. A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. We were able to locate a collector for that speciÀc toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!

See you at the roadshow!

Local maternity nurse Lorraine Reimer has always wanted to participate in international relief work, but she didn’t want to leave her three children behind when they were young. Now that her kids are 16, 18 and 20, she feels the time is right. Reimer left Friday, Dec. 31 for an eight-day adventure in Haiti. She is among a team of health professionals travelling to Cite Soleil, an extremely impoverished area near the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The densely populated city – 300,000 people in two square miles – has been stricken by the cholera epidemic that first hit Haiti in October and has affected more than 121,000 people and killed 2,600. The bacterial infection causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. It is most often spread through ingesting contaminated food or water. The disease has crippled a nation that was already

cousin works with the inter national relief agency Samaritan’s Purse and had posted a message about the need for health professionals to assist in Haiti. Reimer, who has been a maternity nurse in Abbotsford for 24 years, filled out an application. “They’re struggling so badly, and they’re dying of cholera ... They just don’t have anybody there to help them,” she said. The team will set up a clinic consisting of tents and cots. They will then provide IV therapy to replenish the fluid levels of those who are sick, and administer antibiotics once they improve. Reimer said she’s not sure what to expect, particularly in the face of current political unrest in Haiti, but is looking forward to the experience. “I have butterflies – I think that’s the nicest way to say it ... I’m excited, but cautious.” She is expected to return on Jan. 8. For more information, visit the website samaritanspurse.ca.

Another blow to family Cleaned out during holiday break-in Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Korinne and Brian Tjepkema of Abbotsford had barely settled into the new home they had moved into after being terrorized by their former landlord, when they received another blow. Their house was broken into over the Christmas holidays and ransacked. The thieves took whatever they could get their hands on, including about 200 DVDs, a DVD player, food from the cupboards and freezer, a $500 grocery store gift card, birth certificates, Korinne’s passport, and all of her pants. But Brian said it’s the sentimental items that were stolen that cause the most anguish. Korinne’s wedding band, which she had designed herself and which needed resizing, was taken from a jewelry box. Also looted were the earrings and necklace she wore on the couple’s wedding day 10 years ago. They were made of aquamarine, Brian’s birthstone. A locket Korinne received

The couple and their two children, ages three and five, had been away from their west Abbotsford home from about 3 p.m. on Christmas Day until

about 9 p.m. on Boxing Day to spend time with family. They returned to a house strewn with items tossed from cupboards and drawers. The bottom half of their basement door was smashed in, and it appears that the thieves arrived and left on foot. A garbage can was missing and was likely used as a

means of moving the stolen items, Brian said. It was yet more stress for a family who had more than their share in 2010. About six months ago, Brian was diagnosed with a potentially fatal rare blood disorder – called atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome – that can cause Continued on A7

Matt Sitter thought it was just an exaggeration when Tiffany Ferguson told him she was about to have their second child. The couple had friends over for a New Year’s Eve get-together when Ferguson started feeling pains. “I didn’t believe her,” said Sitter. But by 9 p.m., it was clear the baby was on the way. The Abbotsford couple rushed to Langley Memorial Hospital, where their family doctor works. At 12:11 a.m., Isabella Sitter was born, at eight pounds, 15 ounces. She is the first baby born

in Langley in 2011 and the first Abbotsford baby of the new year. Isabella and Tiffany are both doing fine and are now resting at home. “It’s funny. (Tiffany) always said we would have the baby in January,” said Sitter. With the due date set for Dec. 30, both sides of the family were giving the couple a good-natured hard time about having a December baby. “So now it’s a January baby,” said Sitter. Isabella has a big brother, 18-month-old Tysen, who is excited about the new arrival. At Abbotsford Regional

Hospital, the inaugural birth of 2011 occurred at 12:18 a.m. Shelley Takkar gave birth to a baby boy weighing seven pounds, 13 ounces. No further details have been released regarding the birth. Sur rey Memorial Hospital welcomed the first baby of the new year in the Fraser Health Region, at 12:08 a.m. It was a boy, weighing eight pounds, seven ounces. B.C.’s first baby of 2011 was born at 12:01 a.m. in B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. Cayden Wilcott, a six-pound boy, is the first child of Jennifer and Casey Wilcott.

NewsBytes NO ANSWERS IN HIT-AND-RUNS Abbotsford Police are still seeking tips on two hit-andrun accidents that occurred in December, injuring two people. “None of the tips have assisted us in advancing the investigation forward in identifying either the vehicles or the drivers,” said Const. Ian MacDonald. On the evening of Dec. 13, a 20-year-old woman was found injured on the side of the road near Montrose Avenue and Laurel Street. She had a serious head wound, and could only remember having seen vehicle lights. Two days later, at about 2:30 a.m., an injured 25-year-old male cyclist was found on a curb on Garden Street near Simon Avenue. He had been on his way to work. He suffered injuries to several parts of his body, including his head, although he had been wearing a helmet. MacDonald said police received reports that the man was struck by a black vehicle, possibly a Mustang. Anyone with information is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

CAR HITS TEEN A teenage boy from Abbotsford is in critical condition in hospital after being struck by a car on New Year’s Day (Saturday). Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the 17-year-old had parked his car at Margaret Stenersen Elementary at 3060 Old Clayburn Rd. He then went to a friend’s house across the street to watch a pay-for-view Ultimate Fighting Championship event. At about 5:45 p.m., the teen left the house to make a snack-food run for the group of eight or so watching the fight. As he was crossing the street, he was hit by a 2006 Pontiac sedan. He said the driver of the Pontiac remained on scene and was fully co-operative. The teen was airlifted to hospital with injuries that included broken bones to the lower half of his body and a head injury. His name has not been released.

$48,500 awarded for grocery store fall Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A Sicamous woman has been awarded a $48,500 settlement in B.C. Supreme Court for tripping over a pallet and breaking her hip at an Abbotsford grocery store two years ago. Justice Barbara Fisher ruled on Thursday that the plaintiff, Juanita Etson, 78, was 50 per cent responsible for the accident at the Real Canadian Superstore and was entitled to only half the total damages,

which were assessed at about $97,000. Etson was visiting her daughter in Abbotsford, and they went shopping on Nov. 28, 2008. They were walking down an aisle with a deli display on one side and several pallets of product stacked in the middle, according to Fisher’s written reasons for judgment. Etson stopped to let another shopper go by and proceeded to turn left by the corner of the pallet when she caught her left foot. She then

fell on her right side, breaking her hip. Etson testified that, as she was lying on the floor, she noticed that a split board had pulled away from the bottom of the pallet. She believed this is what had caused her to trip. She had surgery to pin her hip together but the hardware failed within nine months and she required two more operations – one to remove the hardware in January 2010 and another to replace her entire hip in April.

Etson testified that before the fall, she was in good health and lived an active, independent lifestyle. She gardened, worked around her home, did artwork, and had a busy social life. After the accident, her activities were limited, and it took her about two months to be able to walk without help after her third surgery. She now uses a cane if she walks more than two or three blocks, and has not returned to her former social life. Fisher ruled that Loblaw Companies Limited, doing business as Real Canadian Superstore, shared the responsibility for Etson’s injury and “breached its duty of care.” However, Fisher said Etson was equally responsible as she did not pay more attention to where she was walking and did not take “reasonable care for her own safety.” Non-pecuniary damages were assessed at $90,000 and special damages at just over $7,000, including the cost for Etson to purchase a recliner chair and a walk-in tub.

The gift of volunteering It’s estimated the average Canadian spent more than $1,100 this Christmas season buying gifts, entertaining, or traveling to be with family or friends for the holidays. In total, we spent more than $28 billion in retail stores in December. But the greatest gift of all won’t drain your wallet or stress the limit on your credit card. It’s you. According to Volunteer Canada, 12.5 million Canadians give some of their free time to help out in their communities. They’re coaches, mentors, advocates, activists, firefighters. They staff the offices of community organizations, serve on their boards of directors, raise money to keep those organizations going. They put on or help out at community events. They help care for and comfort people in need, or who just require a friend or sympathetic ear. They cut grass, shovel snow, clean ravines and shorelines.

They walk dogs, shelter cats, tend homeless snakes, raise fish so creeks and streams may teem with life. They construct, create and calculate. They construct, create and calculate. Volunteers touch every aspect of our daily lives. They’re the threads that weave together the fabric of our society. Volunteers are selfless, but the reward they get from giving their time and abilities are totally selfish – the warm feeling when a shut-in senior thanks them for dropping off lunch, the damp cheek from a dog happy to be liberated for a half hour from the shelter, the high-five from a kid who’s finally mastered a corner kick. The gift of volunteering doesn’t cost any money. It can be a large gift of many hours a week, or a small one. All it takes is desire and commitment. And the spirit of giving. Not only in the Christmas season, but all year around. – Black Press

Be aware of all beverage packaging Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand To get around health regulations regarding the sale of raw milk, a Chilliwack co-op is now labelling its products as ‘cosmetic.’ Whether or not raw milk is hazardous to your longevity, as Fraser Health and other authorities seem to regard it, or hazardous to their financial health, as some regular dairy farmers who hold small fortunes in quota probably consider it, is open to debate. What I do know is that when my kids were small, we used to buy raw milk from a neighbour lady down the street who had two or three cows. Every now and then the mother of my children would drive over to pick up a couple of gallons in glass jars, the lids simply placed on the necks rather than screwed down, to allow the milk to adequately cool between udder delivery and local sale.

We didn’t bathe in the stuff, as the Chilliwack group is suggesting to get around health regulations, but we did drink it, and it didn’t cause us any health issues. There is, however, an admittedly serious consequence to raw milk, and that involves the packaging, at least as it related to our former milkmaid. As noted, she always left the lids loose, which in itself wasn’t an issue until one day, in my new car, said mother of children placed the jars on the carpeted floor behind the front seat. Somehow, and I never did learn the full story, one of the jars tipped, soaking the rear floor and its two-week-old carpeting. I wasn’t aware of the spill for at least another two weeks, until the car began to take on a rather noticeable pong … the normal ‘new car smell’ rapidly deteriorated to an odour that necessitated driving mostly with the windows open. I kept checking the soles of my shoes, the grooves in the brake pad and the front carpet for evidence of a wayward and unnoticed step in dog-doo. I recall one day mentioning the fact that the car had acquired a distinct

olfactory offensiveness (not quite described in that manner), the result of which was the confession of spilled milk … unfortunately now too late to cry over. This revelation was, of course, followed by extensive carpet shampooing

The normal ‘new’ car smell rapidly deteriorated to an odour that necessitated driving with the windows open. and the liberal application of what seemed like a gallon of Nil-odor. The objectionable sensory factor was ameliorated somewhat, though never fully eliminated, especially on hot summer days. What ceased were the trips to the neighbour lady, followed with conversion to handy, fully sealed, containers of grocery store milk. Thus, if there is cosmetic use to raw

milk, ensure your vehicular carpeting is not included among the various applications. If however, you have eschewed milk for ‘adult’ beverages, beware that if shooters are your thing they are about to get smaller. Apparently most oneounce shot glasses are made in the U.S., and are a milliliter or so larger than Canadian (imperial) ounces. This discovery was instigated by, who else, the tax man who claimed bar owners were shorting our great and glorious tax system out of revenue on the number of drinks they sold, based on a 40-ounce bottle of hooch. I will bet that compliance to this discovery was, rather than complaint, welcomed by barmen. After all, smaller glasses will mean more (two) drinks per bottle – and at four or five bucks a shot such revenue beats pete out of paying the extra tax. Remember this, however. While a consumer of shooters and cocktails might be slightly better off south of the 49th, if you are a beer drinker, our pints are a whole 20 per cent bigger! Cheers. markrushton@abbynews.com

Abbotsford gets the Good Life.

Child caught in dispute

I read the headline on your news paper about patients being caught in a health care dispute. My four-year-old daughter was one of those patients, too. She broke her left arm on Nov. 18 around 12:30 p.m. My wife was at home with my mom and our newborn twins, and she called the ambulance. My daughter was taken to Abbotsford Regional Hospital in minutes. I was informed at work and I went straight to the hospital. By that time, two hours had passed. They had done some X-rays on her and were waiting for an ambulance to arrive for a transfer. I was caught by surprise and a nurse explained that due to

some dispute, only one hospital will take patients to do broken bone surgery at any given day of the week, and that day it was Maple Ridge Hospital’s turn. My daughter was in pain and crying. I was then informed the ambulance would only take her to the Maple Ridge Hospital, but wouldn’t bring her back, so I have to drive behind her. My daughter refused to ride alone in the ambulance. That created another problem. My wife couldn’t go with us because we have six-week-old twins at home. So we asked one of my wife’s nieces to ride with her. So the ambulance arrived

again and took my daughter to Maple Ridge, and I drove behind. The surgery was done around 9:30 that evening, after nine hours delay. We had to stay there for one full day and my wife’s niece got stuck with us because I didn’t want to leave my daughter alone. She had to skip her school next day. Now, I donated to the Abbotsford hospital . It was not much, but I did, and I expected it to help my family and myself in the event of the unexpected. But sadly for me and my family, it only added to our pain in that hard time. Raman Chandhar

Thanks to police for checking I live in Burnaby and my sister lives in Abbotsford. After being treated in the regional hospital for 19 days for severe dehydration and something unidentifiable, she was released on Dec. 31. After calling repeatedly and not making contact with her, I called the Abbotsford Police. I explained that I couldn’t drive out to Abbotsford as I’d had some wine with my New Year’s Eve dinner and wondered, completely understanding that the police were probably extremely

busy dealing with calls to parties, if someone could possibly go to my sister’s apartment and check on her. To my eternal gratitude, a male and female officer were dispatched and it turned out my sister’s phone was not working properly. An officer then called me back to let me know everything was okay. Thank-you! Happy New Year to the Abbotsford Police Department. Ila Appleby

FACT

According to Abbotsford residents, crime is the most important issue facing our community.

MORE

FACTS

4. Make the Rules: Set clear limits and expectations.

FACT Children of parents who do not model positive or responsible behaviour are more

likely to engage in risk-taking behaviour, such as gang involvement. FACT Only 25% of Abbotsford students said they had parent(s) and other adults that modeled positive, responsible behaviour.

2. Be Informed: Know where your children are and what they’re doing. FACT There is a strong relationship between low parental monitoring and violent delinquency. FACT Only 38% of Abbotsford students said their parents monitored their whereabouts.

3. Support School: Place a high value on education. FACT Children who don’t like school, don’t think grades are important, and don’t want to go

far in school are more likely to be involved in aggressive acts. FACT 89% of men ages 18-24 in a federal correctional facility hadn’t completed high school. FACT Only 18% of Abbotsford students said their parent(s) were actively involved in helping

them succeed in school.

Parents are part of the solution.

WORTH THINKING ABOUT:

1. Set the Example: What you do matters.

FACT Like guard rails on a bridge, rules create safety. Be fair, consistent, and follow through

with discipline. FACT Only 38% of Abbotsford students said they had clear family rules and consequences.

5. Get Involved: Look after your child’s interests. FACT Help children protect themselves. Talk to them about the dangers of gangs and drugs. Let

them know they can talk to you. Teach them to think for themselves and act responsibly. If you have good communication with your child they will be more likely to ask your advice than turn to peers. FACT Only 29% of Abbotsford students said they communicate positively with their parent(s) and

that they would be willing to seek their parent(s) advice or counsel. In the same survey, only 30% of students said they know how to plan ahead and make choices.

Every choice has a consequence. www.abbypd.ca

Distinctive design with details that make the difference Ever since the new-for-2010 Chevrolet Equinox rolled into dealer showrooms last year, consumers have responded enthusiastically to this just-the-right-size crossover. It delivers distinctive styling and best-in-segment highway fuel efficiency of 6.1L/100km when equipped with the standard Ecotec 2.4L direct injected engine. Equinox enters the 2011 model year in very high demand, with vehicles purchased by customers almost immediately after they reach dealers. More than one-third of Equinox buyers have switched from non-GM brands. And to keep up with demand, GM is retooling production facilities for additional capacity. Available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel drive, the Equinox complements its styling and fuel efficiency with attention to detail and unexpected features. The Equinox features Chevrolet’s signature global face - a two-tier grille and prominent gold bowtie insignia. Strong fender shapes, a distinctive premium roofline, wraparound headlamps and dual round taillamps are additional elements that define Equinox as a true Chevrolet. Equinox’s rocker panels are integrated into the doors to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. They narrow the area

over which a passenger must step, offering protection for pant legs that could brush against dirty rockers. Also, chrome trim and flush-fitting “exposed-edge” windshield and rear glass reinforce Equinox’s build quality and reduce bothersome wind noise. The Equinox interior features thoughtful attention to detail that makes it an ideal family vehicle - including a number of storage bins, an oversized glove box; a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the centre stack; and closed storage under the centre armrest large enough for a laptop computer. Noise-absorbing elements are built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior, making the Equinox cabin noticeably quiet. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology on 2.4L-equipped models uses microphones to detect booming sounds inside the vehicle and sends counteracting sound waves through the audio system’s speakers, providing a quiet driving experience at almost all vehicle speeds. Equinox is built on a body-integral structure with single-piece body side stampings and targeted applications of high-strength steel. Those elements form the foundation of a solid, quiet driving experience. The strong structure enabled engineers to tune the fourwheel-independent suspension system for greater control and driver feedback.

Of Mission, BC passed away peacefully on December 26, 2010 releasing her from the pain of chronic conditions bravely borne for too long.

ENNS, Peter June 15, 1915 December 29, 2010 It is with sadness that we announce the death of our father, Peter Enns, who died peacefully on 29 December 2010 surrounded by his family. Peter was born in Arkadak, South Russia, the second of seven children born to Jacob and Maria (Paetkau) Enns. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926 and settled in Chortitz, Manitoba. This is where Peter helped his father farm. In 1936, he got the urge to leave home and headed to Alberta where he and his friend, Ike Dyke, hoed sugar beets. In the fall of 1936, the two headed to BC via rail in November through Crows’ Nest Pass arriving in Chilliwack to find no snow, but beautiful weather. They made their way to Peter’s grandparents in what, at that time, was known as Sumas, later Greendale. Peter worked odd jobs before he and his two brothers, Dave and John, started a store known as Enns’ Brothers General Store. They opened their store on the 21 of June 1947 only to be flooded out on 1 June, 1948. They rebuilt and soon the two brothers departed and Peter became the sole owner. He operated the store for 30 years selling in 1977. After which he and his son Ernie went into the sausage (Valley Maid) business for 10 years before Peter retired. In 1999 Peter and Susan moved to Menno Terrace in Abbotsford. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Maria, brothers Jake, Abe, Dave and John as well as sister Mary; also one greatgrandchild Joshua Enns. He is survived by his wife, Susan, of 69 years, and son Ernie, his wife Evelyn, their children Diana Sagert, Darrin, Bradina, and his favorite great granddaughter Avaya. He is also survived by his sister, Marj, of Morden, MB, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 7 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. A private family graveside service will be held at Greendale Cemetery. A Celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, January 8 at 1 p.m. at Greendale MB Church, 6550 Sumas Prairie Road, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to MCC would be appreciated. Online condolences may be given at:

O. Diane

Born June 27, 1941 in Matsqui, BC to James Clifford and Stella Grace MacKenzie (nee Mathers) of Straiton; she grew up and lived most of her working life in the Fraser Valley. She worked at the Bank of Commerce in Abbotsford before moving to Vancouver for a few years and taking time off to begin a family with husband, Elwin Kelly. After the family returned to Abbotsford, she worked at Mahoney’s Bakery until she was volunteered to help with a centennial project of the local Women’s Institutes. This adventure resulted in a move to Victoria in 1989 to become the BC Museums and Galleries Advisor after having served as the first curator of the MSA Museum from it’s inception in 1969. Career changes brought her back to the Valley working in the Telephone Museum in Aldergrove and then for Mission Native Housing and going on to establish the Learning Centre (computer school) in Mission. After the sale of the school, Diane worked in programming at the British Columbia Forrest Museum in Duncan. Retirement brought her back to the Valley, first to Abbotsford and then to Mission. The variation in her volunteer career rivaled that of her professional.
