B.C.’s favourite August event is back. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds return to the Abbotsford skies to headline the 50th anniversary of the Abbotsford International Airshow. Marvel at the Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet demo, and be thrilled by the US Air Force Thunderbirds and the US Navy VFA-122 F/A-18 Superhornet tactical demonstration. Bud Granley will astound with the Fouga Jet show, an awe-inspiring dynamic aerobatic ballet. Pete McLeod Red Bull Air Racing will thrill and leave chills. And children, brace yourself for the most extreme school bus ride like no other as the IndyBoys Inc. Jet Schoolbus races to speeds off the chart! This annual family-friendly event has something for everyone to enjoy: spectacular aerobatics, intricate routines, thrilling formation flying, stunning precision parachute work, and an explosive pyrotechnic display.
Aviation through the decades with vintage warbirds to modern military jets, carriers to rotary wing, there is plenty to see for spectators of all ages. You won’t want to miss this incredible anniversary show— three-days of flying events – Aug. 10-12. On the ground, check out the inside of jets and carriers on display; visit the autograph booth to meet your favourite performer; and stop at the exhibit booths to learn about joining the aviation community. A
irshow announcing became a secondary career for Bob Singleton, who was a professional broadcaster for 38 years. He has also been the voice of the Abbotsford Airshow for the past 44 years. Upon retiring from the broadcast industry, Singleton began travelling across Canada and the United States to inform and entertain aviation fans. He found that while attending airshows elsewhere in the country, he “meets people all the time who know about the success of the Abbotsford Airshow in
particular.” “It has given Abbotsford an identity over the years that it wouldn’t have had otherwise,” he said. When Singleton was first hired as an announcer for the Abbotsford Airshow in 1969, he had never been in an airplane. He has now earned his private flying licence, and in 1996 the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds made him an honorary member. Singleton said he enjoys announcing at airshows because it is “different and unique in the sense that you have to virtually describe everything from aerobatic acts to the various aircraft manoeuvres, as well as know the history of the

plane, where it came from, what it did, and of course the people flying them.” Now that the Abbotsford Airshow is celebrating its 50year anniversary, Singleton said the crowd is “quite knowledgeable” on the events and acts. “Someone once described it to me perfectly, that without announcers at an airshow all you would have is a lot of airplanes flying around,” explained Singleton. “However the announcing changes for the crowd in Abbotsford, since most people have been attending the show for several years now, they can handle a little bit more depth and detail.”
The Abbotsford Airshow has produced 50 years of aviation entertainment, and according to Singleton, its survival is “remarkable in its own way, considering there have been a lot of changes.” He believes that the success comes from the “dedication of hundreds of volunteers,” many of whom take their annual holidays to come and help out. Singleton said there is “no doubt that the airshow is an economic driver for the community,” but once the planes have landed and visitors have returned home, it really is about the “community where it all began and bringing those people together.”

demonstrate their esprit de corps. In the air they combine precision formation flying with solo performances. Pilots have their own loud-and-proud routines to demonstrate both their skills and the capabilities of the F-16 Fighting Falcon – Thunderbirds fly the U.S. Air Force’s premier multi-role fighter jet. Their performance in Abbotsford will be the team’s only appearance in Canada this year, as they return to the city help celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary in style. They fly a full schedule that began in March and ends in November. The team has eight highly experienced and carefully selected fighter pilots, and six of them will fly a demonstration in the Abbotsford International Air Show. Thunderbird 7 is the operations officer, and Thunderbird 8 is the advance pilot and narrator, lending his voice to describe the maneuvers during the show. Thunderbirds 9-12 are support officers who perform expert medical, administrative, maintenance and public affairs functions. More than 120 enlisted personnel, representing nearly 30 career fields, form the backbone of the Thunderbirds. Enlisted team members are selected from units across the Air Force in a highly competitive hiring process. While each position has its various selection requirements, all eligible candidates must show a proven record of success and extensive job proficiency. The team was born in 1953 at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, and selected the name
Thunderbirds to reflect the strong influence of the Native American culture in the region and at the base. They have done shows across Europe and Asia, and been seen by millions.

Snowbirds carry the flag 431 Squadron a crowd favourite The Snowbirds Demonstration Team (431 Squadron) is a Canadian icon, comprised of serving members of the Canadian Forces, and always one of the crowd favourites at the Abbotsford International Airshow. The Snowbird pilots and technicians work as a team to bring thrilling performances to the North American public. The nine jets fly precise formations that make it appear to spectators that their wings are virtually tip to tip. Since 1971 they have flown the CT-114 Tutor jet – an aircraft designed and built in Canada, and used by the Canadian Forces as its basic pilot training aircraft until 2000. With its

smoke tanks attached for shows, it is capable of speeds of 750 km/h. Their engines are highly tuned to enhance response during low-level flying. The planes are painted red and white, in the colours of the Maple Leaf flag. They fly a busy schedule, in Saskatoon last weekend, in Abbotsford for three days, and then on to appearances in Quebec, Nova Scotia, PEI and Ontario before the month is out. Serving as Canadian ambassadors, the Snowbirds strive to demonstrate the high level of professionalism, teamwork, excellence, discipline and dedication inherent in the women and men of the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Forces.

U.S. Navy demos a Super Hornet The Abbotsford Airshow will offer a chance to see the U.S. Navy VFA-122 Flying Eagles put a Super Hornet through its paces. The Tactical Demonstration (Tac Demo) Team flies the single-seat F/A18E and two-seat F/A-18F as close to the “edge of the envelope” as safety and prudence allow. It is a carrier-based multi-role fighter jet, and it entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1999. The routine highlights the Rhino’s maneuverability and slow-speed handling characteristics and has been very well received by audiences. It is a $67 million aircraft capable of Mach 1.8 – almost twice the speed the sound. An air show was held at the Abbotsford Airport from July 2-4, 1948. It was held to raise funds to aid flood victims.

Abbotsford’s first airshows were held in the late 1920s on a landing strip in the Matsqui Prairie community of Gifford. Two brothers, Joseph and Bob Lundstrom, became determined to build a plane of their own. With the use of an engine from a disused Oakland car and the help of some mail order plans, the brothers slowly began construction. Their father, Daniel Lundstrom, built a large shop, still standing, to accommodate his sons’ project and a landing strip on the family farm. During the show, 14 planes came from Chilliwack and Vancouver and passengers were able to fly in a Piper Cub for the reasonable fee of a penny a pound. July 1, 2 and 3, 1948 saw the first airshow held at the Abbotsford airport, built during the Second World War as a flight training school. At the time of the first show, the airport was still The Fokker Triplane, home to about 600 the 1963 show. people displaced by the disastrous flood that had inundated most of Matsqui in May of that year. Sponsored by the Abbotsford Lions and the Chilliwack Flying Club, the three-day event attracted 18,000 spectators. Thrill followed thrill as plane after plane took to the air. Highlights of each day were demonstrations by R.W. “Swede” Ralston, 29-year-old flying marvel, who went up in a D-26 Harvard,
and 60-year-old “Pop” Whittier from Seattle who performed a thrilling 5,000 -foot parachute jump, free falling 2500 feet before pulling the ripcord and finally drifting to safety. Dances were held each evening and one third of the proceeds went to the B.C. Flood Relief Fund. The concept of the airshow as we know it today occurred in 1961, when the Abbotsford Flying Club formed. The founding 40 members felt the Abbotsford Airport was too valuable a resource to waste. Through the initial support of $700 from the Abbotsford Rotary Club, the first show went ahead with over 14,000 spectators. In 1963, the crowd of spectators doubled that of the first year and Toby Trowbridge joined the airshow as announcer. His colourful commentaries would make Toby “the voice of the Abbotsford Airshow” for years to come. 1967 saw the first THE REACH P2278 visit of the Golden Centennaires aeroRed Baron in flight at batic flying team. In 1968 they returned, recreated as the Snowbirds. Their popularity at Abbotsford played a large role in the Snowbirds becoming a permanent squadron. Attendance also reached an all-time peak of 340,000. Canada’s Prime Minister, Pierre Elliot Trudeau opened the 1969 Abbotsford Airshow and proclaimed it Canada’s Continued on B15

National Airshow. The Boeing 747 made its first appearance in Canada at Abbotsford in 1969. The Airshow continued on into the 1970s, growing in popularity. The Goodyear Blimp made its first visit in 1971. In 1974, King Hussein of Jordan, a reported aviation buff, opened the show. The same year, Toby Trowbridge passed away and Bob Singleton, trained by Toby, took over. In 1976, the Blue Angels celebrated their 30th anniversary and appeared in their new McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawks. In 1978, Premier Bill Bennett opened the show. A highlight of 1979 was a flyover by the SR 71 Blackbird, unable to land due to secret material on board. In 1980, the British built Harrier made its first appearance at Abbotsford.

Gulf, the U.S. aircraft demos were cancelled in 1990 and the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce initiated its first “Flight Begins” festivities. An extraordinary number of forest fires kept Conair out of the show for the first time in two decades. In 1995, the Snowbirds flew a new routine that included a formation during which the wingtips of the aircraft were separated by only one metre. The early goal of promoting the use of the Abbotsford Airport through an airshow has been enormously successful. As a result of the airshow’s success, commercial use of the airport has expanded but with wideranging public support as strong as ever, both Airport and Airshow authorities are committed to compromises that will allow the Airshow to continue for years to come.

The Canadian Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks, will lend some colour to the Abbotsford Airshow with their unique demonstration. The SkyHawks are Canada’s only military parachute demonstration team. Over the last 40 years it has represented Canada and the Canadian Forces to over 73 million spectators worldwide under the team’s signature Canadian flag parachutes. Bringing their parachutes in close proximity to build formations in the sky, and using coloured smoke canisters, the team puts on a spectacular show. Performing these aerobatic parachute formations requires a high level of skill and courage; and is known as Canopy Relative Work. This year, during their 41st anniversary season, the SkyHawks will perform more than 30 shows across North America and one in Belgium, between May and October 2012. Supported by the Canadian
Army, the SkyHawks are based out of Trenton, Ontario, at the Canadian Forces Land Advanced Warfare Centre. Both regular and reserve, the team members are from various occupations of the Army, Navy, and Air Force and bring a wide range of experiences to their performances. “It is with great pride that we continue to showcase the professionalism, dedication and team work it takes to be part of Canada’s military,” says a team press release.

True North theme for CF-18 demo
The CF-18 Hornet National Demonstration Team is returning to Abbotsford for the 2012 air show. It is one of 15 air shows in Canada the team will participate in this year. This year the demo team’s theme will be “The True North Strong and Free.” The line from the national anthem is taken as their theme because it speaks to the magnificence of Canada’s north, and to the Canadian resolve to demonstrate a visible presence there and to have the capacity to defend our Arctic territory. The RCAF has an important role in the North. The Air Force operates in that region on a regular basis, conducting aerial sovereignty, reconnaissance and surveillance patrols, carrying out search and rescue operations, defending the airspace of Canada and the United States through our commitments to NORAD, and enabling military operations. To embody this theme, this year’s demo Hornet will display tail and dorsal art featuring 13 distinctive snowflakes representing Canada’s provinces and territories, as well as the 13 wings across the country. The snowflakes were created by veteran graphic design director Jim Belliveau of 410 Squadron at Cold Lake, Alberta.

A school bus wouldn't normally be associated with an air show – unless the space where the kids sit was occupied by a jet engine. The Indy Boys are back to the Abbotsford International Airshow with a bus that is capable of 610 km/h. The Indy Boys are all about extreme motorsports. Driver and vehicle designer Paul Stender built his first jet-powered car almost 20 years ago, and since then has created a Humvee capable of almost 600 km/h, a jet beer truck, and an outhouse that goes 110 km/h. He has been featured in media from television's Monster Garage to the Ripley's Believe It or Not books. He is the top booking act in the jet car business. Stender is in the process of building a vehicle that will break the land speed record. He is converting a Cold War era Russian fighter jet into a car capable of speeds near 1,300 km/h.
A jet-powered school bus is among the unique vehicles that the Indy Boys will drive into the Airshow.
