It would not be the Annual Abbotsford International Airshow without the iconic Canadian Snowbirds. Celebrating their 40th anniversary, the Snowbirds continue to amaze us with their neckbreaking speed and thrilling acrobatic performances. The runner-up was meeting the pilots and crew followed by the Blue Kay.

Every July Abbotsford celebrates the height of berry season with the Berrybeat Festival. Of course, what visitors prefer most are the scrumptious berries and berry products—jams and jellies. Maan Farms took the silver followed by the array of vendors- a bazaar of food and activity stands.

FAVO U R I T E PA RT OF TH E AG R I FAI R The Agrifair is a century old this yearfrom old gypsies and crystal balls to rodeos, amusement rides and petting zoos. But, the number one place to visit is the Fat Pig Saloon. While your kids are out eating cotton candy and spending their last $5 trying to win that overstuffed bear, mom or dad prefer to swig back a cold one. The rodeo came in second followed by the petting zoo.

FAVOU R ITE BUILDING Home of the Abbotsford Heat, the Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre (ASEC) is Abbotsford’s absolute favourite building. The ASEC is a multisports state-of-the-art building with a capacity to seat 7,000 people and still there’s room for expansion. The newly built Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre was Abbotsford’s second choice and the Old Post Office ranked third.

FAVOU R ITE COMMUNITY EVENT

FAVOU R ITE R E A SON TO LIVE I N ABBOTSFO R D

You can’t live in Abbotsford and miss the Agrifair-it’s a traditional favourite. As the website says, ‘Do the Fair with Family Flare’. Be a cowboy or cowgirl for the day. Enjoy amusement rides, singers, dancers and saloons-fun! Snack on popcorn, mini-donuts, cotton candy, and snowcones—yum! The Farm & Country Market took second place and the Abbotsford International Airshow came third.

Tucked in between beautiful mountain ranges and a pastoral beauty, Abbotsford is home to a multitude of cultures and languages. There are so many incredible things about living in Abbotsford, but the best part is being close to family and friends. The second and third reasons are that it is a central hub and close to everything with warm and friendly people.

proud to be part of this community.

FAVOU R ITE E N DA NG E R E D PI ECE OF ABBOTSFO R D H ISTO RY Aahh... the strawberry u-pick, a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon. Once upon a time we lathered ourselves in sunblock, packed a hat, grabbed a bucket and headed to the field. Hours later, with an aching back and flushed skin we devoured our labour of love. This piece of local history is endangered with all of the markets popping up and nobody has time anymore. But it’s not forgotten. In second place are the trees in the older part of Abbotsford, followed by the Trethewey House Heritage Site.

FAVOU R ITE PL ACE TO HOST A N EVE NT I N ABBOTSFO R D The Ramada Plaza & Conference Centre gets the gold medal as the best place to host an event. It really has it all with, 24,000 square feet of combined meeting and exhibit space, nine banquet rooms and the Grand Pinnacle Ballroom, and multi-functional industrial trade space. It’s the perfect place to host a wedding reception or charity event. The Tradex ranked second, and the Coast Abbotsford Hotel placed third.

FAVOU R ITE PL ACE TO S TAY I N A B B OT S F O R D The Ramada Plaza & Conference Centre topped the polls as Abbotsford’s ‘Favourite Place to Stay’. And why wouldn’t it? It’s perfect for executive travellers with its business floor and meeting space. Families can go to Castle Fun Park next door or take a dip in the pool and Jacuzzi. Ranking second, the Abbotsford Coast Hotel is located within minutes from the Sumas-USA border and Highway 1. Home sweet home was the third best place voted to rest your head.

FAVO U R I T E PA RT OF DOW NTOW N Historic downtown has undergone an incredible facelift, but the best part is the aesthetic appeal with the charming building and store fronts. The joy of boutique shopping has been restored. The silver medal goes to the artistic benches—the Three Men Telling Tall Tales will keep you talking for hours, followed by the scrumptious treats at Tracycakes where ‘every bite is an occasion’.

FAV O U R I T E C H A R I TA B L E O R G A N I Z AT I O N The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is the number one charitable organization. The MCC Thriftshop Network donates a percentage of sales to help people suffering from poverty, conflict, oppression and natural disaster. Purchases become your ‘gift to the world’. The Salvation Army, which has thrift stores, a community kitchen and emergency centre, came in second. Third was the Canadian Cancer Society.

Located at the corner of Clearbrook Rd and South Fraser Way, for the past twenty years, MJM Furniture has been providing Abbotsford with quality furniture at discounted prices—a killer combination. All forms of payment are accepted, and MJM even offers in-house financing. Now you can afford that living room suite that keeps taunting you. Abbotsford’s second and third place finalists are Sears and The Brick, respectively.

Just think, one surgery and you will never have to wear glasses or contact lenses again. Where do you go and whom do you trust? There’s no fooling around when it comes to eye surgery. Valley Laser Eye Centre is owned and operated by one of the world’s leading experts in eye surgery, Dr. John Blaylock. LASIK Eye Centre was second and Coal Harbour Lasik Eye Centre ranked third.

Online vacation purchases are growing in popularity, but nothing compares to that personal connection when you can call up your travel agency and just ask them to take care of it for you—book that flight, research hotel rooms and find the best deal on a rental vehicle. Marlin Travel was voted Abbotsford’s favourite travel agency, followed by Hagen’s Travel and Cruises and Ocean Breeze Travel.

Several factors are considered when choosing a financial institution. After all this is where you are storing your hard-earned money and hope to see a substantial return. TD Canada Trust has been chosen as Abbotsford’s number one bank. Competitive interest rates and loans and ‘going the extra mile’ keep their clients happy. Royal Bank was next and CIBC came in third.

FAV O U R I T E H E AT P L AY E R Jason Jaffray is Abbotsford’s favourite Heat player. The Calgary Herald applauds Jaffray for fighting for his dream, having been knocked down as a member of the Calgary Flames, before joining the Heat. Abby’s own David Van der Gulik is next and third place was a tie between Leland Irving, Kris Chucko and Brett Palin.

FAVOU R ITE SPORTI NG EVE NT Canadians love their hockey and we are all Canucks. Now we have professional hockey in our own backyard. Heat Hockey is, unquestionably, Abbotsford’s favourite sporting event followed by lacrosse. The 2010 Winter Olympics get an honourable mention, having riveted and inspired us in February.

Rotary Stadium & Track has a fenced 400-metre, rubberized 8-lane track and grass fields creating the perfect venue for track and field events and games, such as soccer, rugby or rugby sevens. Delair Park is the next best place to hit a baseball or throw a football. Townline Park with its great ball diamonds, came 3rd.

SSSizzle...Abbotsford is hot for the Heat. For favourite team name, the Abbotsford Heat scored big, followed by the Vancouver Canucks and the Abbotsford Pilots.

FAVOU R ITE ALLE RG E N How wonderful...spring. A time of renewal and rebirth. The sun comes out and summer thoughts reappear. Spring is also the time for those nasty allergies. The top allergen that Abbotsford hates is cottonwood. The next is the popular pollen and then the brooding Fraser Valley smog.

FAVOU R ITE EYE SO R E Hands down, the number one eyesore is that old shopping mall on Gladys Avenue. Businesses have come and gone, but it looks like the remnants of an old ghost mall. Shivers. Jubilee Park is no picnic given its poor reputation, coming in second, Historic Downtown places third.

FAVOU R ITE MANURE SMELL Even though manure enriches our farmland soil, we tend to hate the pu-

trid air that comes with it. The polls chose a ‘favourite manure that we love to hate’—cow. Cow has that especially potent delivery, but pig is almost as lethal. Chicken squeezed out a third place finish.

FAVO U R I T E PA R K I N G NIGHTMARE Parking is still free mostly everywhere and there’s ample room except for a few places. Top prize goes to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre where parking is virtually non-existent. You have to park at the University of the Fraser Valley or the Phoenix and Finnegans. Old Downtown follows with its congestion and pay parking lot. The Save on Foods on Sumas Way came in third. No matter what, though, it’s still not as bad as Vancouver.

The favourite Manitoba Moose Player that Abbotsford loves to hate is Corey Schneider. Corey played his last game after a spectacular three-year American Hockey League (AHL) career. Mike Keane is next and then Mike Funk.

FAVOU R ITE M A N ITOBA M O O S E P L AY E R

FAVOU R ITE B USY INTERSECTION

Five Corners is a nightmare. Just the name alone explains it all. There should only be four corners at an intersection. Not surprisingly, it was chosen as the number one busy intersection that Abbotsford loves to hate. The intersection of Sumas Way and Marshall Rd was not far behind, followed by the Mt Lehman Freeway interchange, or should we say matrix.
