DINE WRITE

MR. PEEPLES HAD ME FOR LUNCH MR. PEEPLES

DINING ROOM

I DON’T DO BRUNCH OFTEN ENOUGH. WELL, THAT’S NOT WHAT MY DOCTOR WOULD SAY, BUT MY INNER, CAREFREE, WEAK-WILLED, INSTANT-GRATIFICATION TASTE BUD SLAVE WOULD PUT UP A FIGHT. ESPECIALLY AFTER A SUNDAY VISIT TO MR. PEEPLES, IN MIDTOWN. I MET CYNTHIA, MY LONG-TIME FRIEND AND SOMETIMES BUSINESS ASSOCIATE, THERE TO DISCUSS SOME UPCOMING PROJECTS. WELL, THAT WAS WHAT WE TOLD OURSELVES. REALLY IT WAS TO CHECK OUT THE NEW PLACE AND INDULGE. The restaurant and banquet space opened July 29, 2013, in the refurbished Boy Scouts of America Building at 1911 Bagby Street. Inside it’s adorned in ornate-looking elements and graffiti art, by local artist James Perez. The décor includes chandeliers and gold leaf-covered, handcrafted iron gates and limestone pottery. A young lady in a summer dress was spinning songs – well, mastering the mp3s from a laptop on a small stage. Fun with a touch of formality seems to be the intent.

EXECUTIVE CHEF PEDRO SILVA of Hearsay Gastro Lounge and 51fifteen Restaurant & Lounge is running the show. Also on hand, executive sous chef Angel Rios, formerly of Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse, and pastry chef Johnny Wesley, formerly of Killen’s Steakhouse in Pearland and Benjy’s, among others. So the talent is deep. Delicious, refreshing blood orange mimosas brought down the body temperature, rescuing us from the overpowering Houston heat.

MAIN ENTRANCE We started with Lox and Loaded, slices of smoked salmon with capers, red onion, diced hard-boiled egg and sour cream, the usual lox adornments, on a cracker. We were free to construct our own. Next up, I chose the “Captain Crunch” French Toast. How could I not? It’s the traditional French toast, but they’ve ground up Cap’n Crunch® cereal in the batter. What you get is a crisp outer crust, a nice spin on an old favorite. My partner in decadence ordered The Maxamillion, a petite filet mignon with béarnaise sauce, three eggs (over easy, her preference) and maple-glazed, bacon-wrapped fingerling potatoes. The steak was very tender and, soaked in the béarnaise, was sumptuous and savory. Fortunately, Cynthia insists on maintaining a dynamite figure, so I was free to steal from her plate repeatedly. Steaks and seafood are the specialties, but the menu is packed with delicious descriptions and creative titles. I’ll have to return for the Hair of the Dog, a crispy pork belly with cheesy grits, eggs and a beer. Maybe after a night spent sampling fine wine in the soon-to-be-opened 10,000sf upscale lounge in the basement. A 1,600-bottle two-story wine tower, with some 500 labels, overlooks the entire restaurant. The first floor also features a separate bar and lounge area with VIP seating. A couple patios boasting umbrellas from Austria and furniture from France offer a potentially pleasant setting when the mercury drops. There are banquet and meeting facilities on the second floor with state-of-the-art audio and visual systems for business conferences, receptions, private parties, et al. So there are plenty of reasons to return.

CHOPPING BLOCK IS NEW TO THE WASHINGTON AVE. AREA AND IS SHAKING THE SCENE UP WITH THEIR MENU OF GOURMET Granny Smith burger with venison patty BURGERS. With over 20 creative burgers to choose from, you’ll find something that’s sure to pique both your curiosity and your taste buds. What really stands out about their menu to me is the option to substitute the beef patty on any of their burgers with turkey, black bean, elk, venison or Kobe beef. This allows for flexibility and takes the diners’ dietary restrictions and concerns into consideration. Another way to look at it is having the ability to have some fun and try a different combination each time you visit. Personally, I’m a big fan of mixing savory with sweet; I LOVE fruit in my

new menu

savory dishes. With that being said, two burgers jumped out at me… the Granny Smith and the Big Kahuna. I decided to go with the Granny Smith, opting for a venison patty with cheddar cheese, maple bacon, sautéed apples and red onions served on a Hawaiian Sweet Bun. This burger was a great choice for me. The sweetness from the Hawaiian Sweet Bun paired well with the tartness of the sautéed apples, the mild gaminess of the venison and the rich flavors of the cheddar cheese and maple bacon. For the diner looking for a burger with some spice, perhaps the Firehouse or South of the Border are more your speed. CHOPPING BLOCK HAS HAPPY HOUR DAILY FROM 2 – 6PM AND AN OUTSIDE COVERED PATIO FOR ENJOYING THE COOLER HOUSTON DAYS AHEAD. Perfect for late night eats after (or before) hitting the Washington Ave. scene, visit Chopping Block for your gourmet burger fix.

BERNIE’S BURGER BUS STOP

CUISINE old school burgers, with new school attitude LOCATION Reliant Stadium | www.berniesburgerbus.com Twitter: @BerniesBurgers HOURS: Game Days

HOUSTON FOOD TRUCK FAVORITE, BERNIE’S BURGER BUS, HAS A NEW HOME IN RELIANT STADIUM! When I first heard about this, I felt a tad conflicted. I thought to myself “am I more excited about going to a Texans game OR am I more excited about getting a Bernie’s Burger at a Texans game?” Needless to say, I was definitely more excited about the ability to now get a Bernie’s Burger while I watch a Texans game. For many (well, at least for me), part of the experience of a sporting event is the food and beverage. Having a great quality burger made with local ingredients and from a top-notch chef is definitely a plus for any real sports fan. There’s just something about enjoying great food while cheering on your favorite team. While each item on Bernie’s menu is touchdown-worthy, THEIR MENU FOR RELIANT STADIUM WILL BE SIMPLIFIED. The Principal, The Substitute and The Cheerleader will all be served with Bernie’s handcut fries; be sure to get their addictively delicious ketchup! The Cheerleader, topped with pepperjack cheese, crispy jalapenos, lettuce, roasted tomatoes and a jalapeno ranch will probably be a favorite among many of the fans. It’s packed with flavor and has just the right The detention burger amount of “kick.” Located between Sections 114 and 115, you can find Bernie’s Burger Stop for all Texans games, college football games, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and any other large events for the next year! This new addition to Reliant Stadium is exciting and it will definitely add to the game day spirit. Over the next year, it will be great to see fans of the Texans and Bernie’s rally together and show what Houston has to offer, both on and off the field. I’m predicting a great football season filled with lots of mouthwatering food to celebrate. What do you think? See you at a game!

As big dog lover, I seek out local spots that welcome Saxon, my Chow/Akita, plus they have to be delicious or entertaining. My favorite weekday morning spot for a crafted latte and yummy pastry is Revival Market (550 Heights Blvd.). A weekend morning ritual is either coffee and a breakfast gyro at Niko Niko’s on Market Square or a patio table at Onion Creek (3106 White Oak Dr.)

OTHER PLACES SAXON AND I FREQUENT ARE THE BONEYARD (8150 WASHINGTON) FOR A BEER AND DOG DATING, CAFÉ BRUSSELS (1718 HOUSTON AVE.) WHERE THE MOST AUTHENTIC MOULES AND STEAK AU POIVRE IN HOUSTON CAN BE FOUND OR RED LION (2316 S. SHEPHERD DR.) (FOR A PINT AND SPICY CURRY. THE BACK DECK OF NOSH (3636 KIRBY DR.) WITH ITS LUSH CANOPY OF GREAT OAKS OFFERS THE PERFECT BIT OF SHADE TO ENJOY CHIC INDIAN FOOD AL FRESCO.

Bayou Bikers takes off the 1st Sunday of each month at 8am from Market Square and is a great way to get intimate with our city! Although you need mountain bikes or fat tires, the ride is an informal group who gets together for 25 – 40-mile rides exploring the winding bayous of the city. It’s free and FUN! www.marketsquarepark.com

For days without Saxon, I love the dive nature of the The Big Easy (5731 Kirby Dr.) on Thursday nights featuring Luther and the Healers for blues and swing dancing. Simone’s, close by on Sunset, is a great low-key spot to land for an after-dinner drink and cozy conversation.

CLUB/LOUNGE REVIEW

Photography by Daniel Ortiz

THE PASTRY WAR

HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU, AGAVE!

A

GAVE SPIRITS ARE READY FOR THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MEAN TEQUILA? YES, AND NO. NATIVE TO MEXICO, THE AGAVE USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF AGAVE SPIRITS, THE BLUE AGAVE, IS A SUCCULENT WITH BROAD, FLESHY LEAVES. AFTER A METICULOUS MANUAL HARVESTING PROCESS, THE SAP FROM THE FLOWER IS THEN FERMENTED

AND DISTILLED CREATING MEZCAL AND TEQUILA (TRUE TEQUILA MEETS VERY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS, LIKE CHAMPAGNE)! THIS SHORT DESCRIPTION REALLY DOES ABSOLUTELY NO JUSTICE TO HOW AGAVE-BASED SPIRITS ARE CREATED, THEIR HISTORY OR THE CULTURE SURROUNDING THE AGAVE-PRODUCING REGIONS, SO DO A LITTLE RESEARCH, OR HEAD DOWNTOWN TO THE PASTRY WAR, A NEW BAR AT 310 MAIN. YOU KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO BE A BAR REVIEW AT SOME POINT, RIGHT? First sight, The Pastry War is a fun bar. Almost like you are sitting in the middle of San Miguel de Allende, until of course the light rail glides on by. Nevertheless, the bar is a real visual treat. Adorned with Mexican collectables, three distinct spaces and even an old VW bug (cut in half!), surely no one can complain they are shorted on “experience” here.

So stay for a while and let yourself enjoy its true intentions, a celebration of agavebased spirits and Mexican culture. If you like tequila or mezcal, or for that matter any Mexican-styled drinks, there might not be a better bar in this city to imbibe. Just take a look at the menu; it’s obviously a well researched homage to many of the finest manufacturers of agave-based spirits. In the name of research, we recommend the Del Maguey Pechuga Mezcal, smoky but so smooth – it’s a great start to enjoying mezcal. Don’t be intimidated; the knowledgeable bartenders are happy to give you the background of the new agave spirit you are about to sip, so just ask! Of course we also recommend the house margarita, in all variations!

THE PASTRY WAR 310 Main Street | Houston, TX 77002 @thepastrywar Facebook /thepastrywar HOURS: Tuesday – Saturday: 4pm to 2am HORA FELIZ: 4 to 6pm every day!

Sure, The Pastry War seems to have a focused offering, but we kinda think that’s the point. Grab your extra pesos (Pastry War accepts them) and decide if it’s your kind of thing or not, amigo.

EXHIBITS EMAIL US AT MUSEUMS@002MAG.COM

1. THE MENIL COLLECTION www.menil.org Wols: Retrospective, on view thru January 12, 2013. A draftsman, painter and photographer, Wols was one of the most ingenious and influential artists to emerge in postwar Europe. This exhibit will introduce broad audiences to the work of an artist who remains unknown for the most part in the United States. Comprising approximately 20 paintings and 50 drawings, watercolors and photographs, the exhibition will supplement the Menil Collection’s strong holdings of the artist’s work with international loans of important works. 2. HOUSTON CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY www.hcponline.org Moving/Still: Recent Photography from Texas Artists, on view thru October 27. Houston Center for Photography and FotoFest present a new exhibition featuring 12 multi-disciplinary artists from across the state. THE ROTHKO CHAPEL www.rothkochapel.org Music and Religion in the Age of the “Nones,” on October 24. Music has always served as a vital means to communicate the large questions of human existence, often playing off traditional forms of religion. As the religious landscape in the United States changes with the rise of those who identify as spiritual but not religious, what might music tell us about the group commonly called the “Nones”? Anthony Pinn, Ph.D. explores the ways in which some of the basic concerns and perspectives that mark this growing group are expressed and explored within music. 4. HOUSTON CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY CRAFT www.crafthouston.org The Maker’s Archive: Works by Tybre Newcomer, on view October 4. Featuring large sculptural work and intimate wall pieces, Newcomer’s ceramic installation captures the transcendental relationship between craftsmen and their tools. Speaking directly to the endangerment of professional craft practices, Newcomer honors the field through his life-sized re-creations of workspaces and his construction of gilded niches, displaying tools like religious icons.

On her first expedition to Antarctica, J.J. was overjoyed by the sheer variety of forms, colors and types of ice, all of which

DEBORAH COLTON GALLERY – VOICE OF THE HOMELESS HOUSTON BILLBOARD Although the billboard launched last month, Jessica Crute’s public art installation was unveiled in anticipation of the Collective Identity exhibition up through October 26 at the Deborah Colton Gallery. A commercial billboard along I-45 South near Velasco Street is meant to impact the thousands of commuters every day, imparting its message of awareness. Lining the Houston skyline with the words of those who are without a home, Crute’s public space billboard seeks to humanize the issue of homelessness and to create a platform through which the voice of the homeless may be heard reading: “EVEN THE PIGEONS DON’T SEE ME” –voice of the homeless. Inspired by the Deborah Colton Gallery-sponsored Yoko Ono IMAGINE PEACE billboard, which engaged the thoughts of the viewer on an almost subliminal level, Crute hopes to raise awareness of issues that surround and are related to homelessness. Calling all Art Hounds WINTER STREET AND SPRING STREET STUDIOS ARE A-BUZZ THESE DAYS…THIS MONTH, THE ARTIST-DRIVEN SPACES HOST THE BIANNUAL ART OPENING ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5TH FROM 5 –10PM. THE EVENT, ALWAYS A BIG HIT WITH LOCAL ART HOUNDS, INCLUDES FREE VALET PARKING, WINE AND LIGHT BITES. THIS YEAR ORGANIZERS ARE ADDING PEDI-CABS TO SHUTTLE BETWEEN BUILDINGS. On view is the new work of 150 artists – including newcomer Edgar Medina, a Mexican American artist whose work was recently included in Art Santa Fe and the LA Art Fair. He heads to Red Dot Art Fair in Miami this December. Other highlights include Microscope 1824, an eight-by-ten-foot experimental space that will feature Tralfamadorian Exhibit, artist Ian Anderson’s threedimensional painted sculpture based on Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. Street artist Monica Vidal will show her huge tent-inspired communal space Falling Hive. “You see a lot more mixed media going on and you also see people are branching out – doing sculpture and experimentation with photography – artists are diversifying,” says Sarah Jackson, of Kenektid PR and Marketing. “There is also a reemergence of independent artists – they are treating it more as a business as opposed to a craft, controlling every facet of their career and doing their marketing,” she adds. “There are still hard core folks who think you are not legit if you don’t have gallery representation, but in this digital age they can do a lot more on their own. That’s why Spring Street and Winter Street Studios are so unique,” she explains. “When Jon Deal bought Winter Street, he was kind of the first person in Houston to take an old building and repurpose it. Some of the older artists were

over at Canal Street, in studios that didn’t have amenities, like air conditioning. John was one of the first to offer studio spaces that were clean and safe,” shares Jackson. “A lot of people too don’t know Spring Street also has a theatre,” adds Jackson. Used by theatre ensembles like Mildred’s Umbrella and Stark Naked, expect some quick improv and a behind-the-scenes look. The monthly open house, Second Saturdays, happens October 12 from 2 – 5pm, showcasing an expansive collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, mosaic, photography, mixed media and jewelry. “Both the buildings have their own unique character. Winter Street has mostly established artists who have been there eight or nine years. It has a more seasoned feel. Spring has more emerging artists.” Management is set to open a third building, Silver Street Studios. Slated to open in November, that building will host about 60 artists, in addition to providing new digs for a few major local art organizations.

GISH at the MOVIES

The Orange Show (www.orangeshow.org) is taking a walk on the sinister side this month with THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (pictured), one of the most influential films of the silent era which later became the standard for the film noir urban crime dramas of the 1940s. Werner Krauss plays Caligari, a sinister hypnotist who travels the carnival circuit displaying a somnambulist named Cesare (Conrad Veidt). The film includes *murder! romance! mystery!* and is accompanied by Two Star Symphony’s original score (they also perform original music for SHADOW OF THE BAT-MAN at Discovery Green on 10/25). “Kino B: Contemporary Cinema by Berlin-based Artists” is screening 10/19, 7:30pm, at the Aurora Picture Show (www.aurorapictureshow.org) and curator Caroline Koebel will be in attendance. This montage of films initiates viewers into the swarm of moving images made thus far in the 2010s by Berlin-based artists. Sylvia Schedelbauer’s “Sounding Glass” (pictured) is a stunning and astounding experimental short about vision, history, memory and war. Other projects were curated in situ during a research trip to Berlin and include film, video and installation transposed to single-channel projection by Guillaume Cailleau and Ben Russell, Harun Farocki, Isabella Gresser, Bernd Lützeler, Anna Marziano, Deborah S. Phillips, Michael Poetschko and Daniel Steegman Mangrené. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (www.mfah.org/film) has several October offerings, including HERB AND DOROTHY 50X50, about a retired postal worker and librarian who are donating art to all 50 states from their amazing million plus dollars collection (10/3, 10/10, 10/20), and several films by activist, playwright, political activist and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini. This month’s “Movies Houstonians Love” series includes MUSCLE SHOALS, presented by Mark Wawro, about FAME Studios, an unlikely breeding ground for artists such as Mick Jagger and Aretha Franklin located on the banks of the Tennessee River in Alabama. The Werner Herzog film FITZCARRALDO (pictured), will be presented by Gwen Goffe on 10/28, 7pm, and is the story of opera aficionado Brian Sweeny Fitzgerald, a failed railway entrepreneur whose dreams and ambitions are always greater than his ability to achieve them.

RECORDING

Photography by Anthony Rathbun

HARRY SHEPPARD

I

F EVER THERE WERE A RECORDING ARTICLE FITTING FOR A DISCLAIMER, THIS IS IT: HARRY SHEPPARD WAS MY LANDLORD FOR FIVE YEARS IN THE MID-’90S. BEYOND THAT CONNECTION, THOUGH, HARRY IS A LEGENDARY JAZZ VIBRAPHONIST WHO SPENT TIME PLAYING WITH COLEMAN HAWKINS, BENNY GOODMAN, BILLIE HOLIDAY AND MANY OTHERS IN HIS EARLY DAYS IN NEW YORK CITY BEFORE AN ILLNESS IN THE FAMILY BROUGHT HIM TO HOUSTON IN THE MID-’80S.

Harry fell in love with the city immediately, and put down roots that soon became permanent. He recorded a handful of fusion records for Justice Records in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and has appeared on several albums with local improv ensemble Free Radicals since, but playing out live has always been his bread and butter. Now at age 85, he still plays all over town many nights a week, bringing his abundant energy with him everywhere he goes — something which no doubt helped him fight off cancer earlier this year.

different features, this and that. You see little kids, four years old, five years old, no hair, they’re doing radiation, they’re doing chemo. Cancer’s a bitch, man. It’s terrible. It really is. But I never complained, I just went straight ahead. I worked every night, all through the radiation. They couldn’t believe it at the hospital! “You’re going to play music tonight?” I’d say, “Yeah! Yeah, sure!” They couldn’t believe it. Sometimes I was very weak, but I never missed a night.

So no more radiation treatments, then? No, no. That was the end — April was the end of that. Yeah. I did six weeks, five days a week, 35 minutes each time. I never complained, because I saw some of the other patients. Oh, man it was sad. It’s really sad.

So how many nights a week are you playing right now? Let’s see… Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, sometimes Thursdays, Fridays, sometimes Saturdays and Sunday brunch every other Sunday. And then I go to — two or three times a week I go to retirement homes. You know the Alzheimer’s places?

Because they didn’t catch it soon enough? No, well, different people have different … you know,

40. october 13 | www.002mag.com

Yeah. You gotta give back, these people. These people need it. I don’t charge ’em, I just go. But I love it! I love it because number one: I connect with them. And they’re a good audience, and they appreciate it. And I appreciate them! You know, I’m playing in restaurants most of the time, and I realize it’s not a concert situation. I’m ambience. You know, that’s it — I’m ambience. The secret of my success is I don’t play too loud. [laughs] I don’t disturb anybody. But it’s good, yeah! I love goin’ to the Alzheimer’s place. They’re wonderful. I bring them right back. I’m taking people out of a trance almost, and you got ’em dancing and happy and talking to me about the bands and this and that — people that don’t talk! Harrison: How do you feed your soul? Olajuwon: Spiritually. Everything in this universe is created to serve the human being. To be part of the human race alone is enough to be grateful to God. So, first, to realize that. Then, to know the human being has a higher purpose than the regular creation. And once you realize that goal, you can start to grow, helping one another, regardless of color, race, religion. You get joy watching your action create joy for others. You cannot taste that unless you act that.

EVERYTHING IN THIS UNIVERSE IS CREATED TO SERVE THE HUMAN BEING. TO BE PART OF THE HUMAN RACE ALONE IS ENOUGH TO BE Harrison: Name three life-defining moments you’ve had and why they’re life-defining. GRATEFUL TO GOD. Olajuwon: When I got a visa on a basketball

scholarship. I got my American visa saying “prospective student on basketball scholarship.” I said, “Wow! I can’t believe they give scholarships to play sports!” Then, when I started practicing my faith three years into the pros. The time was ideal because it set a foundation for my career for how you can live your life according to God’s way. It gives you guidelines, encourages goodness and sets higher principles for you. Like the concept of contracts, it’s a trust. You have a guaranteed contract – whether you perform at a high level, you’re guaranteed to get paid. What is your motivation to strive to do your best if the money is already guaranteed? You must give all you’ve got, getting your rest, training, performing at a high level. Our faith is our lifestyle so the team knows you will never relax and you will play at your highest level no matter what. Then, when I retired from basketball and started a new chapter because you know there is always an uncertainty because you’re protected all these years and now you go into the real world and it’s a different game, so that uncertainty creates doubt naturally. My success has been a blessing. It’s not something I can take credit for, I’ve been given the opportunity and enabled to execute. Harrison: If you could ask God for one favor, what would it be? Olajuwon: Wow. Hmmm. For forgiveness, but not just for myself. So you pray and ask God for forgiveness for yourself and you pray for others for guidance so they can live principled. If you do, it will be a better world. Harrison: What advice about life would you give a child? Olajuwon: Well, to be good. To realize goodness is a goal to strive for, then to be yourself. Don’t try to do things because everyone is doing it, to be confident on a set of principles.

EVENT GREAT RAMEN CHALLENGE 2013 | WHERE IKEA

Chefs from Uchi, Underbelly, Bar Boheme, Eatsie Boys, Kata Robata and Cove battled it out in front of adoring foodie fans in the cafeteria at IKEA for the coveted Golden Ramen Noodle trophy. The challenge? To create a dish with limited utensils and using ingredients easily accessible at a local grocery store and not costing more than $3. Editor Carla Valencia de Martinez was one of the celeb judges alongside Taylor Byrne-Dodge of MyTable, food critic (and 002 contributor) Mia Pham and 95.7’s Sarah Pepper (of What you doing in the Courthouse? fame), to name a few. But there could only be one winner. Public vote went to Underbelly and the judges gave it to Uchi.

DARIO FRANCHITTI Interview by Lance Scott Walker Photography by Cody Bess

SO YOU’VE ENTERED YOUR 40S NOW — HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE CHANGED AT ALL? Not really! In my job, yeah. Because I’m near retirement age in my job, so everybody’s: “When are you retiring? When are you retiring?” But I keep driving. So, no, not really. It hasn’t really changed much. I don’t feel any different for sure. I still feel like — I don’t feel any different than I was when I was 25. A few more aches and pains.

doing multiples of that, and that’s a good thing obviously, making the sport relevant for the car manufacturers – you know, for the general public. And the technologies we’re developing on the racetrack are finding their way to the cars on the street eventually. Not only the technology to make them more efficient, but to make them faster, too. That’s a fun thing, to see that – when you go driving your car and you realize, “Oh, we helped develop that technology.”

BUT YOU’VE HAD THAT PERSPECTIVE FOR A WHILE — YOU’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THINGS LONGTERM BECAUSE YOU’VE BEEN RACING SO LONG. I’ve been racing a long time. But it seems like the last four or five years, I get asked at least once a week how long I’m gonna keep driving for.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THESE CHANGES HAVE BEEN SOMETHING YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO ADAPT TO AS THEY HAPPEN OR HAVE THEY HAPPENED REALLY QUICKLY? No, it’s all been fairly gradual. You know, there’s been different changes over the last 10 years, all sort of things like gearboxes – rather than having a gear lever in the car, you put the panel behind the steering wheel. The clutch lever as well – rather than having a pedal for the clutch, it’s above the steering wheel, too. Just little things like that. But most of the technological advances in the cars – the performance ones, anyway – are under the skin. You can’t really see. And the teams are very protective of what those are.

At this point, do you think you’ll take another stab at NASCAR? No. There’s more chance of me flying to the moon, I’d say. WHAT UPDATES IN TECHNOLOGY HAVE YOU REALLY TAKEN TO PERSONALLY OVER THE LAST DECADE? As far as with the cars?

WHAT KIND OF PREPARATIONS DO YOU MAKE IN ADVANCE OF GOING SOMEWHERE TO RACE? DO ANYTHING THAT AFFECTS YOUR RACING. YOU TRY TO VISIT THE TRACK LONG IN ADVANCE? There’ve been two things happening almost in kind of HOW DO YOU LEARN ABOUT IT? opposite directions. There’s been the way technology Well, a lot of the tracks – Houston’s kind of unusual on has changed, but then there’s also the budgets involved this year’s calendar because it’s one of the tracks I in racing in general. Whether it’s Formula One or haven’t raced on before. I raced back in the late ’90s NASCAR or Indy Car, the budgets have gone down. at the track at the George R. Some of the engines, you were lucky if on site, we’ll walk the track and we’ll you were doing two miles to the gallon look at the configuration of it and the www.franchitti.com back in the late ’90s. Now, you’re tightness of the corners, the bumps and

the surfaces. The drivers and engineers will all get together on that, but the engineers are obviously working with data that have been acquired as well from old races on the track, and using that as a sort of simulation to come up with the best setup, whether it’s the gear radials, the springs, the dampers, any of those things. A lot of the preparation is done before you even get near the track. HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT CELTIC [FOOTBALL CLUB] THIS SEASON? Yeah, things are good at Celtic! We qualified for the Champions League, which was phenomenal. The game last week [August 28] was the final qualifying game, and it came down to injury time. And it was a fantastic, fantastic goal, so I’m really excited about the Champions League. The next round we drew Ajax, A.C. Milan and Barcelona – those are the three teams that we’ve got to play. So we’re really up against it, but as a fan it’s going to be fantastic to go and watch those games. I really enjoy that. It’s going to be amazing. DO YOU GET TO SEE THE GAMES WHEN YOU’RE OUT ON THE ROAD? Not so much out on the road, but I’ve got the channels on my bus, in any case I can pick one of them up, but I do watch them at home. Some of these games, I’ll actually make a special trip back to Europe to watch them. OUTSIDE OF RACING, DO YOU HAVE SOME PROJECTS COMING UP THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT? We’ve got a new version of my TW Steel watch coming out pretty soon. We just finished that, and I was actually wearing the prototype yesterday. Racing’s taking up – as it always does – all of my time, and I’m fully focused on that. Anything else that happens, businesswise, is sort of a side thing. Racing takes up all of my time, and that’s absolutely perfect. That’s why I love it so much, because it’s so absorbing.

MILITARY IS A BIG TREND THIS FALL SEASON (WHICH IS PERFECT SINCE IT’S SO EASY TO OVERLAP WITH THE PUNK TREND THAT IS EVER SO PRESENT RIGHT NOW). THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY SEVERAL INTERPRETATIONS WHEN IT COMES TO THE TREND. IT CAN BE SIMPLY DRESSING WITH THE COLORS (ARMY GREEN, BLACK, TAN, WHITE AND, FOR ME, GOLD), GOING THE STRUCTURED JACKET ROUTE (A LA MICHAEL JACKSON) OR SIMPLY WORKING THE CAMOUFLAGE PRINT INTO YOUR OUTFIT. THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MY MIND WHEN I THINK OF CAMOUFLAGE IS ARMY GREEN. HOWEVER, SEVERAL DESIGNERS HAVE TAKEN THE PRINT AND USED IT IN SEVERAL OTHER COLOR WAYS. HERE’S A CAMO ON CAMO LOOK WITH A T-SHIRT AND ZIP UP JACKET BOTH IN GRAY COLOR TONES. PAIR IT WITH A SIMPLE PAIR OF SHORTS AND MAKE THE OUTFIT POP WITH A RED BOOTIE.

Camouflage t-shirt @ J-Crew| Equipment jacket and Helmut Lang shorts @ Neiman Marcus | Jimmy Choo booties

Just because its military doesn’t mean you can’t be feminine. This vest could have easily been paired with jean shorts and combat boots but I wanted to show how easy it is to dress it up. To make it more body-conscious I belted it and added a pencil skirt. I layered a few gold necklaces and instead of popping it with the same red bootie from the other outfit (which could have worked too!) I chose a nude/gold shoe and popped her lip instead.

Vest @ Urban Outfitters | belt and layered necklaces @ J-Crew | Vince skirt @ Neiman Marcus | Louboutin shoes @ Nordstrom

Impeccable design, luxurious quality and a rebellious philosophy? The EVERLANE culture is most refreshing in the retail industry and challenges the industry unlike any other. They spend months finding the best factories around the world (the very same ones that produce designer labels), building a strong personal relationship with the owners to ensure a factory’s integrity. The most radical concept is that EVERLANE believes customers have the right to know what their products cost to make and reveals their markup. The weekender bag, in reverse denim and khaki twill, is beautifully designed and is the perfect travel companion. THINGS I LOVE

A few weeks ago the super-talented and adorable Katie Hughes (Global Color Ambassador) stopped by our offices to show us the new BUTTER LONDON collection of cosmetics. Previously they had only been known for their nail lacquers, but the makeup is, well, like butter. The colors are saturated but wearable and glide on like, you guessed it – butter! The colors are so wonderful it’s hard to pick one plus they multitask! I use the brown mascara on my brows and lower lashes, the cream blush on cheeks, lips and eyelids. Available at Ulta stores.

I HEART ARIAN FOSTER. Gwyneth Paltrow can do no wrong. It’s easier to accept that no one can attain her effortless perfection and embrace what she creates. From her GOOP newsletter, which I was featured in [OK, “included” maybe is the better word ;)] back in July to the goop city guide app which I used the heck out of last month for getting around. One word: FLAWLESS.

I love the charm of European hotels. Small, quaint and all that you need. New York has its own as well, and I fell in love with the HOTEL BELLECLAIRE in the Upper East Side nestled in the neighborhood. There’s a market next door for fresh juices and great shopping nearby (think Barneys, American Apparel and more).

THE ÜBER APP CHANGED MY LIFE IN NYC LAST MONTH. IT’S AVAILABLE IN OTHER LARGE CITIES, BUT GET IT. IT MAKES GETTING A RIDE SO EASY AND CLASSY.

One of my high school buddies, Paul Hotze and hi brother, launched PARIS TEXAS APPAREL CO. to express your inner Texan. Because, really what Texan doesn’t need a tie with tiny bowls of queso and chips or margaritas? www.paristexasco.com

WISE GUY By Tim Moloney | Photography by Anthony Rathbun

TWO FOR THE ROAD GOOD FRIENDS, WORKOUT PARTNERS AND SELF-TAUGHT CAR RESTORERS (THEY LEARNED MOST OF IT ON YOUTUBE) MARIO GORDON AND CHRIS JOUBERT WERE BROUGHT TOGETHER BY A CRAIGSLIST AD. “Chris had a diesel engine posted on Craigslist that I was interested in buying for one of my trucks,” says Gordon, a Houston firefighter and Crosby resident with a long history of restoring Jeeps and 4X4s. “So I came over here one night and I looked at the engine. And when I looked at Chris, it was kind of like looking in the mirror because we look so much alike.” Gordon and Joubert, an IT guy originally from Berkeley, California, who owns the Third Ward auto shop, got to talking over the engine, which Joubert had priced at $500. “But, he had an old 50s truck in his shop that needed some welding done on it,” says Gordon, “so he told me that if I would help him with the welding and the floor pans for the truck, then he’d give me that motor. I started helping him with the floor pans of the truck and we figured out that his mother and my dad grew up together and they actually know each other. My dad is good friends with Chris’ uncles, so it was a family connection right from the start.”

60. october 13 | www.002mag.com

Gordon’s pride and joy is his 1974 Toyota Landcruiser, now restored to mint condition. He bought it almost ten years ago from a man in Norwalk Ohio, sight unseen, for $2200. “It didn’t have an engine, it was a rust bucket. I started doing this piece by piece in my garage. I bought a welder and learned everything from watching videos on YouTube and taught myself how to weld and fabricate parts by myself. There’s no after-market support for them. You can’t just pick up a catalog like you can do with a Jeep and buy a fender or buy a door. In fact, I had to purchase three of these vehicles to finish one, to get the parts that I needed to make it a weekend vehicle for my family and kids,” he adds. The pair remains always on the lookout for a new project – the next one might be a ’65 Dodge sedan. They’re in it for the love of the process and transformation, not to turn it into a business. “I grew up in a car culture – that’s what we did in California as kids – work on cars, so it’s a big part of my life,” says Joubert. “If someone offered us the right amount of money for any of these, we might sell them. But we’ve got so much time and so much passion in them, we can’t just give them away.”

DESTINATION

A WHOLE NEW WORLD ATLANTIS

By Carla Valencia de Martinez

A

TLANTIS IS HUGE. SERIOUSLY. BUT IT’S AMAZING FOR KIDS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MANY HAPPY KIDS. (AND THE PARENTS DIDN’T LOOK UNHAPPY EITHER – THAT’S A PLUS!) OUR FLIGHT LEFT HOUSTON AT ABOUT 10:30AM AND WE FINALLY MADE IT TO THE RESORT AROUND 5PM. PASCUAL PASSED OUT IN THE CAR ON THE DRIVE IN SO HE MISSED THE MAJESTIC ENTRY. ALEX AND I WERE STARVED SO WE WENT STRAIGHT TO THE CASCADE POOL, OUR ONLY OPTION FOR FOOD AT THAT TIME. I REALLY WASN’T EXPECTING MUCH FROM A POOLSIDE MEAL – SOMEHOW MOST RESORTS OVERLOOK THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD POOL MENU. THIS HAS GENERALLY BEEN MY EXPERIENCE FROM MOST HOTELS. I ORDERED A BLACKENED FISH SANDWICH, WHICH WAS AMAZING WITH DELICIOUS SOFT, FRESH BREAD AND FLAKY, FATTY FISH FILLETS TOPPED WITH TONS OF COLE SLAW, RELISH, TOMATO AND RED ONIONS. ALEX WASN’T SO LUCKY; EVERYTHING HE ORDERED WAS SOLD OUT! (ANOTHER GOOD SIGN? MAYBE THE FOOD’S SO GOOD THEY RUN OUT!)

Next we headed to our room complete with a mini-kitchen – this is what differentiates Reef from Cove rooms. Basically these rooms have an empty undercounter fridge (apart from the stocked mini-bar), a dishwasher (small drawer pullout), a 2-burner stove top, all the accoutrements – including a tea kettle, coffee area and even placemats. We also had a small living area and a spacious bathroom. I loved the comfort of stocking snacks and milk for easy access plus it saved us having to wait for room service with an impatient 2-year-old. Back to that 2-year-old. As soon as we were settled we changed and hit the beach, which has to be one of the most glorious beaches I’ve seen. The Caribbean water is serene and crystal clear, the waves are gentle and the temperature was perfection. Pascual (the aforementioned 2-year-old) began a flirting game with the ocean whose calm water with little baby waves was perfect for a toddler. He frolicked and ran and before we knew it was throwing himself into the waves dunking himself in the water.

ATLANTIS OFFERS A PLETHORA OF MEAL OPTIONS. Which is a good thing considering that the resort is not all-inclusive (but there are packages available with built-in meal options – explore your options online), so if you are budgeting, things can get out of control quickly. The price points are from low to high allowing you to plan your splurges. We headed to the Marina Village for pizza at Marina Pizzeria. The line was out the door and although the wait was long and the tantrums many, the pizza was worth the wait. Marina Village, lined with luxury yachts big enough to house a huge family, is full of restaurants including Subway and a candy store. There are kids and families everywhere! By 10pm we were back in our room snug as a bug in our bed watching TV. THERE ARE JUST AS MANY POOLS AND WATER ADVENTURES (over 20 swimming areas and 11 pools) as there are food options. We checked out the Splashers pool – a toddler’s paradise with an elaborate Mayan-themed playground with slides, tunnels, rope bridges and of course, water. But most days we were drawn back to the amazing beaches surrounding the property.

E ALSO TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE DOLPHIN EXPERIENCE AT DOLPHIN CAY. AND ALTHOUGH THE DOLPHINS WERE AMAZING AND SUPER TALENTED, IT WAS THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES SEA LIONS TOUR THAT MADE PASCUAL’S DAY. (Ask for Anqelique to lead your tour; she’s amazing.) We toured the freezers where the mammals’ food is kept, the labs and behind the scenes. We got to see the baby dolphins with their mamas interact, which was beyond sweet. They would rub up against each other cuddling. (Interesting fact: dolphins don’t sleep!) The sea lions, especially Nemo who reminded me of Stevie Wonder, were super friendly and active, giving the trainers high fives and kisses. But Sunshine the seal at the end kissed us all and bid us adieu. A FEW TIPS FROM OUR TRIP: Plan your dinners and make reservations. Capacity is met in high season and you will not get a table at some places. If you can, splurge on a meal (or stay) at the One & Only. We had lunch at Dune on a rainy afternoon and this was, hands down, the best service and most amazing meal we had. Kim was a star, and our meal was stellar. From the tuna and avocado spring rolls we started with to the lobster tacos, grilled shrimp with noodles and our son’s meal (ordered off the kids menu) – a medium-well filet with mac and cheese and veggies – was wolfed down. We had the best time overlooking the beach while the rain quietly fell around the place. It was magical. The main tower is home to the aquariums, which had Pascual amazed. And, parents, the Atlantis Kids Adventure isn’t called the coolest kids club in the Caribbean for nothing. The program is amazing! I wanted to stay there. From culinary lessons, interactive electronic art, theater and of course, outdoor play – the Willy Wonka-esque retreat is great for kids and offers parents some peace. There’s also a teens club, Crush, with an Internet lounge, gaming room and nightclub, which opens after 4pm. Atlantis is a super complete resort offering options for the entire family.

TOOLS AND GADGETS

PLUG HUB I hate cords. You hate cords. But we still need to live with them for another generation or two until wireless technology can catch up. Until then we need ways to untangle our lives and the Plug Hub from Quirky is one simple way to do that. Pop this underneath your desk or in the corner of your room. It takes just a few minutes to set up and then you can forget about it. Drop in your cables and you’ll already feel a sense of relief. This box also comes with cord wrappers to alleviate any extra wiring and even allows for hiding a full power strip. You can sit Plug Hub on its rubber bottom or on its back or mount it to a wall. Either way your life will be a bit less tangled. $25

TENQA BLUETOOTH EARBUDS The weather is finally getting cooler which means more of us will be outside running, tossing the football or just exercising without perspiring as much. We still do sweat and that wreaks havoc on headphones. But take a look at the new Fit Bluetooth earbuds from Tenqa. These small, wireless buds fit snuggly in your ears as they come with six pairs of different sized ear tips. They can pair with two devices simultaneously and the stereo sound is great. The active noise cancellation worked well in my tests and the smart voice alert notification made taking phone calls convenient. The company claims a battery life of 5.5 hours so that should suffice the average runner’s marathon time. $69

ENERGI SLIDING PHONE CASE A phone is no good if it doesn’t have juice. And that happens to many people late in the day as their battery begins to die. Tylt makes a uniquely designed line of smartphone cases and now has one equipped with a built-in battery. The Energi Sliding Case is sleek, slim and can double the iPhone® 5 battery life. It features a slide-on battery that allows you to easily slide it on when you want power or slide it off for a night on the town. The rechargeable 2500mAh Lithium Ion battery provides up to nine hours of additional talk time. The case comes packaged with two slim-line iPhone 5 cases to change style on-the-fly, one black and one colored. Even more impressive, it adds just 1/2 inch to the length of the phone. $99

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN: FLOR CARPET DESIGN SQUARES

By Carla Valencia de Martinez

I’M SMITTEN WITH THE LIMITLESS OPTIONS FLOR OFFERS. FROM RUNNERS, TO ENTRIES, TO AREA RUGS TO WALL-TOWALL – YOU HAVE THE CREATIVE FREEDOM RARELY AVAILABLE WHEN PICKING A FLOOR COVERING. I’VE SEEN THE TILES IN LOCAL EATERIES LIKE BOADA CUISINE. I’VE BEEN FOLLOWING THE BRAND SINCE I FIRST SAW IT IN MARTHA STEWART YEARS AGO, AND NOT TOO LONG AGO A FLOR STORE OPENED IN WEST AVE. I LOVE JITTERBUG IN GREY. THE PATTERN REMINDS ME OF MISSONI, ONE OF MY FAVORITE TEXTILES, AND WOULD BE PERFECT ANYWHERE. THE PATTERN IS FORGIVING ALTHOUGH ONE OF THE PERKS OF FLOR IS THAT THE TILES CAN POP RIGHT OUT AND CAN BE EASILY WASHED IN THE SINK. IF YOU’RE INTO DIY (I AM BIG TIME!), THE TILES ARE EASY TO INSTALL. I INSTALLED 42 TILES (WHICH MAKE A 10’X12’ AREA RUG) IN MY LIVING ROOM IN UNDER AN HOUR AFTER A YOGA CLASS. BE PREPARED TO SWEAT, BUT I DID IT IN BETWEEN COOKING DINNER AND WAITING FOR MY FAMILY TO GET HOME IN TIME TO EAT.

CROSSWORD

ANTIDOTE

Photography by Sofia van der Dys

COFFEE THE WHO: Opening, in our opinion, at the beginning of the Houston coffee boom, Antidote sits on Studewood in The Heights, ready for you to spend your day or night or just a quick stop on your way to work. Regulars spend a good chunk of time on the patio (great hidden gem) or out front on the table seating. Inside, random vintage pieces and Houston tributes help those with laptops, hipsters and Heights parents (often with kids) enjoy their regular drink of choice. No coffee snobs here. THE BREW: Antidote has chosen wisely. Sourcing its beans from Big Bend Coffee Roasters out of Marfa, TX, Antidote makes bold, tasty drinks. Think your standard coffee house offerings – with a nod to the strong yet flavorful cold brew coffee (try it with a little half and half). The Cajeta Latte (Mexican-style caramel) and the Antidote are a few outside the norm offerings also worth your time. Those looking for the other brew will appreciate the recent beer and wine upgrades from PSA Wines to the drink menu. Winning! THE FOOD: Without a real kitchen, Antidote manages to offer a strong menu of local, organic and vegan options. Offerings from Pat Greer’s Vegan-Raw, Juice Girl, Sinful Bakery, Slow Dough and Fat Cat Creamery highlight the small but nice food offering for any time of day. Our personal highlight is the morning pastry selection, which only disappoints when it sells out! Try the ham and cheese croissant or one of the muffins. OVERHEARD IN THE CROWD: “You can really taste the goat’s milk in this Cajeta.” We may be mistaken, but, outside of Mexico, we don’t think the cajeta sauce is actually made from goat’s milk!
