How CARLA VALENCIA de MARTINEZ

on earth is it already October? It’s insane how quickly time goes by. This is one of my favorite months and issues. I love fashion – it’s always so much fun to produce the fashion shoots and work with my peers to fulfill our vision.

I am simply infatuated with our cover; it’s almost spooky. Fitting, since we shot at the Julia Ideson Library, which is rumored to have its own ghosts. We had a few odd elevator moments. Thank you so much to Marta Fredricks at Dancie Ware Perugini and Kemo Curry, Manager at Houston Metropolitan Research Center, for helping capture our shots. While pulling the clothing for this shoot, we had much less time than usual and learned that even under pressure, we still stuck to our gut rather than all the trends. Yes, we were inspired by a few, but a general fashion rule of thumb is to stay true to yourself. Wear what you like; what makes you feel confident and you. My grandmother, mother and sister have always been my fashion inspiration. Who are yours? Gabriella Nissen outdoes herself yet again with some amazing photography. Turn to page 30 for some eerie masks and to page 58 for the latest in beauty. Come celebrate fall and fashion fun on October 7th with 002 at J. Silver. Check out the latest in jewelry trends for the season. Join us starting at 7pm.

002 CONTRIBUTORS A native of Houston, Jenni Rebecca Stephenson is an arts advocate who has devoted her life to dance, theatre and vocal and instrumental music. She received two “highly lucrative” arts degrees and has performed with the Allegro Ballet, Ars Lyrica, AURA, the Mitchell Center for the Arts and Divisi Strings, as well as directed three operas for the Moores Opera Center. She co-founded Nova Arts Project, a nonprofit theatre company which received the Houston Press’ first MasterMind Award, and with which she continues to perform and direct. Following a position with Theatre Under The Stars, Jenni Rebecca became Managing Director of Spacetaker, a nonprofit artist resource center dedicated to economic development, continuing education and networking opportunities for artists to enhance their professional growth. She also contributes to various publications, including a regular blog with Chron.com. Her best friend calls her “wonderfully and frustratingly idealistic.” That’s about right.

Pixie Ibañez embarked on a new journey the moment she accepted a position as social editor for the late ICON magazine. This was a new world for her, but despite it all being a little overwhelming at first, she managed to conquer her fears and look towards a new future. Thanks to the support of her friend and colleague, Kim Coffman, who she credits as the person responsible for introducing her to the “it” crowd of Houston, she found herself submerged in a whole new world and loving it! Five years have come and gone and she is thrilled to be the new associate editor for 002houston magazine. “I love the people I work with, every day is like coming home. I look forward to learning more about this amazing industry and I truly believe I have the best teachers to show me the way.”

Cody Bess is a documentary portrait photographer who currently resides in Houston, with his wife Jessica. Although he has had a passion for photography throughout his life, it was never something Bess thought he could earn a living doing. Instead, he studied graphic design throughout college. It was not until seeing an extensive portfolio of photographer Keith Carter, that he committed to a career behind the camera. “I’m a photographer, I record moments, I witness events, and I capture them. So whether I’m shooting a portrait or someone on the street, to me I’m documenting the journey.” codybess.com

EVENT 3RD ANNUAL CASINO NIGHT WHY BENEFITING THE HEALTH MUSEUM WHERE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL & FOUNDATION ROOM WHEN AUGUST 15

Photography by Daniel Ortiz

002houston October 09:002houston

Not everything “that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” Houston socialites flocked to the Four Seasons to see if Lady Luck was on their side. Moment um Au di and event chairs Roseann Rogers and Lara Bell hosted The Healt h Mu seum benefit. Guests enjoyed Vegas-style entertainment – even Elvis and his showgirls joined the fun! In addition, our friend Edward Sanchez set up “ Queen of Hearts” lounge and gave gals mini-makeovers with Lady Luck Lashes and Casino Royal glitter lips. But it was not all for the ladies: the men also enjoyed a little pampering by Gentleman’s Tonic. Speaking of tonic, guests tamed their appetite with bites from Quattro Restaurant and refreshed their palate with Bison Grass Vodka and Riazul Tequila. Final destination…The Foundation Room!

Come on lucky 18!!

The Menil Collection presents Joaquín Torres-García: Constructing Abstraction with Wood, through January 3, 2010. The exhibition centers chiefly on works from the 1920s to the 1940s, spanning the time from when Torres-García lived in Spain, New York, Italy and France, developing toys and the vocabulary for his wood constructions, to his eventual settlement in Uruguay as the founder of a Constructivist art movement. These sculptural works will be accompanied by a selection of Torres-García’s oil paintings and drawings, which demonstrate the connections between his experiments in two- and three-dimensional forms. PATRICIA GRAS + DAVID THOMAS

In the past 10 years, we have seen financial scandals and are now living through a recession. Some claim the economy is cyclical but was this caused by normal economic forces? Thomas has an answer: “When you really boil down the problem, it’s a metastasizing effect of both greed and pride. Greed, which seems to say, I want a little bit more; pride which says, I’ll never get caught. And it takes integrity to really stand up to both of those forces.”

Music also played a big role in his life. From junior high through college, Hernandez was always in a band. And, as many Houston fans will recall, he was the original drummer for the Flaming Hellcats. Then one October a few years back, art and rock collided.

“I’ve always been interested in art,” Bishop said. “When we found our new space, we realized we had this cool room that could be used for the vinyl store and double as a gallery.

“I had a Day of the Dead Party,” Hernandez said. “I didn’t want to do the typical altar, a tribute to a family member. I wanted it to be something different. Well, Joey Ramone had passed away earlier that year, and I loved the Ramones. So I did a small drawing in honor of him.

“And it was like a moment of serendipity,” said Bishop. “About that time, Carlos was looking to make a push with his fine art. So I approached him about a show.”

“The next party I had, I did a big painting of Johnny Cash. My friend Quinn was there, and he dug it. And he told me that if he ever had a gallery, that I should show this artwork.”

Named after one of Houston’s original record stores, the Record Ranch Gallery is a unique spin on the traditional art gallery model.

D Í A D E SE R E N D I P I T Y ?

As a boy growing up in Lubbock, Hernandez was fascinated with paper maché skeletons from Mexico and the altars created for Día de los Muertos, memorializing the dead and their achievements while on Earth.

“He had these big banners,” said Quinn Bishop, owner of Cactus Records. “I was so blown away by these huge tapestries, these 9-foot by 12-foot drop cloths. I thought, ‘people would go for this.’”

“I was about 9 or 10, and at first I was just attracted to bu t these animated, happy skeletons,” said Hernandez, “b w hen I learn ed w hat it w a s all abou t, I th ought , ‘ w hat a great t ra dition, m an! I w an t to do t hat one day.’ I didn’t realize it at the time, but that was my intro to outsider art.”

At the time, Bishop was handling purchasing and GM duties at the old Cactus location on Shepherd, so the gallery idea was just that: an idea. But when the lease was up on that property, the store’s new home at

A RO CK I N ’ A RT SPACE

“We realized there are really very few music-themed galleries in the country,” said Bishop. “And none in the South. So it was an opportunity to do something no one else was doing.” “We provide wall space for artists who wouldn’t otherwise find space for their work,” Bishop said. “And because of the music connection, we get the work in front of many people who wouldn’t typically visit a gallery. It’s a casual atmosphere. I mean, how pretentious can you be in a room full of vinyl?”

ART FILMS ARE GOOD FOR THE SOUL… TAKE A FRIEND TO ONE! MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON The “Movies Houstonians Love” series continues at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (mfah.org) on Monday nights each month at 7pm. Each series will now be themed so this year they’re riding the foodie craze with “Meals on Reels” – movies focused on food. Longtime restaurateur Irma Galvan, the charming owner of Irma’s Mexican Restaurant (22 N. Chenevert), has chosen Tortilla Soup which will screen Monday, October 26, at 7pm. Tortilla Soup is the story of a HispanicAmerican chef (Hector Elizondo) who has lost his taste for food since his wife’s death. A widow sets her eyes on the chef, which may revive his “lust” for life (and her!). Irma herself was a widow at an early age which is perhaps why this film resonates with her. “Spotlight on Greek Cinema,” organized by the Museum with the Consulate General of Greece/Houston and the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest (a group dedicated to building a museum here), will be screened at the Museum and the Alamo Drafthouse (drafthouse.com); log onto the MFAH website for the complete lineup of films. Spacetaker joins the Museum in presenting “Texas Indie Sundays”; this month’s selection is Chalk by Houston-based (formerly of Austin) filmmaker and Kinkaid School teacher Mike Akel. Chalk will be onscreen Sunday, October 11, at 5pm and is a “mockumentary” on the high school experience. OPERA and STARS You don’t have to shell out the big bucks to see fine arts such as opera or ballet – just head over to Rave Yorktown 15 (ravemotionpictures.com). Rave has joined forces with Emerging Pictures to present the best in European opera and ballet and other special presentations, all in crystal-clear Hi-Definition. The “Opera in Cinema” series this month will feature the Teatro Comunale di Bologna performing Bellini’s I Puritani (Thursday, October 15, at 7pm and Sunday, October 18, at 1pm) and Russia’s Marinsky Ballet performing Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (Thursday, October 29, at 7pm and Sunday, November 1, at 1pm).

Cinema Bomar has made their home at Domy Books (1709 Westheimer) and this month they’ll be screening their first-ever “Viewer’s Request Program” on Tuesday, October 20, at 8:30pm. Just in time for the holidays, you can snatch up a DVD of the just-released documentary, The Star of Bethlehem (thestarofbethlehemmovie.com), a film which presents compelling and dramatic evidence that the celestial event trumpeting the birth of Christ was an actual occurrence as described in the nine clues given in the book of Matthew. Speaking of DVDs, Travis Evans of Deep Down Design Studios (deepdowndesign.com) was the first place winner at this year’s Bayou City Inspirational Film Fest (bciff.com) for his fun, animated cartoon “Cool Rules.” If you’re looking for help with understanding the complex labyrinth of getting kids into preschool, get in line first for the new DVD Nursery University, just released by Docurama Films (docurama.com). FILM FESTIVALS galore QFest (q-fest.org) and the Houston GLBT Community Center (houstonglbtcommunitycenter.org) are hosting a screening of the new documentary Out in the Silence, which recounts the difficulties that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people face in rural and small-town America. The date and venue were still being confirmed at press time so check the websites for that information. The University of Houston-Clear Lake’s “Film & Speaker Series” (uhcl.edu/movies) hosts the “Tournées Festival” of French films from October 24 through November 21. Developed by the French American Cultural Exchange, the “Tournées Festival” is just one project of the group, which focuses on nurturing French-American relations through innovative international projects in the arts, education and cultural exchange. It’s Halloween month, so if it’s zombies you’re looking for, the Aurora Picture Show (aurorapictureshow.org) is hosting a free video salon, “Lessons in Teenage Zombie Filmmaking with Emily Hagins,” on Sunday, October 25, 1pm at the Aurora Video Library, 1524 Sul Ross. Emily will show clips from her film Pathogen. “Revolución! The New Latin American Left Film Festival” will be at Rice Cinema (ricecinema.rice.edu/) this month; check their website for the complete lineup.

FOR ART’S SAKE

Interview by Lance Scott Walker | Photography by Anthony Rathbun

ANNA ATAEVA www.annaataeva.com Anna’s paintings are on display at Rice University’s Media Center Project Gallery until October 30. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT EXHIBITING A SERIES OF YOUR WORK IN RESPECT TO WHAT SIDE OF YOU IT SHOWS AS AN ARTIST? HUMAN CONDITION, FOR EXAMPLE, SHOWS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SIDE OF YOUR VISION THAN DOES THE KOI SERIES. DO YOU FEEL LIKE IF SOMEONE ISN’T SEEING THE ENTIRE PORTFOLIO THAT THEY WON’T REALLY “GET” WHAT YOU DO? My first impulse is to say that I don’t think my Ichthyolatry, or fish works, are much different than my human body works. My Koi fish paintings are no more naturalistic than the Human Condition works. My approach to the materials is my chief interest in making the works and I’m using the same technique and the same principals in constructing both kinds of paintings. In the Human Condition works, I’m representing a distorted human anatomy. In my Koi works, it’s the anatomy of fish. The Koi fish works are not photorealistic. It’s the same as the figurative works. I need to paint something else besides human anatomy works. The same way an office manager needs to watch TV at home, or the way some husbands need a lover on the side, I need to use the full color palette, bright and white. Painting Koi fish helps me psychologically to accumulate positive energy that I’ll spend on my next human bodies works. The Human Condition paintings take a lot of positive energy. They’re a struggle to produce. I suppose there is some difference between the fish paintings and the human figure works. With the Human Condition series I’m trying to represent inside interactions on the outside, to make manifest the interior on the exterior. The way Nietzsche says that through thinking deep thoughts, the face of the intellectual eventually changes. The act of thinking makes them look intelligent. It’s this basic principal in action. Thought becomes form. IN YOUR KOI AND WATER SERIES IT LOOKS AS IF YOU WORK FROM PHOTOGRAPHS. DO YOU? I was classically trained in Russia. To work from photographs in school would have been career suicide. We worked only from life, or with cadavers. However, now I live in the United States and it’s 2009. I feel like there are many more opportunities available to me now. SO ARE THEY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS? I have started to use my own photographs in developing my compositions, but apart from looking at them as source images, there are no other photographic processes involved. The works are made by hand and with my eye. I’ll admit that sometimes I have temptations. There are amazing images online everywhere now. Google Image Search can be hard to resist. I won’t say where or when, but there are elements from other sources in my works, perhaps, say, the pose of a figure. I think we can call them traces of the Internet that creep in slowly or gently into my working process. I’m very aware of it though. WHAT DID YOU WORK FROM FOR THE HUMAN CONDITION SERIES? ANYTHING? There are absolutely no photographs involved in these works. I can’t stress this enough. Back to my education, I’m relying exclusively on my training (5 years, 40 hours a week, working from nude models and corpses). It’s all memory or imagination – not really imagination even. They are principals or rules of objects interacting in three-dimensional space. In constructing these forms, I would cite a number of important influences: my Russian colleague Konstantin Sheiko, and artists such as Egon Schiele and Nicolai Fechin.

26. october 09 | www.002mag.com

THE LACK OF A LANDSCAPE AROUND THE CHARACTERS GIVES A SORT OF HOLLOW, LONELY FEEL. IS THAT WHAT THE SPACE REPRESENTS FOR YOU? The works that will be on view at the Rice Media Center do share, for the most part, an empty space. The empty space accentuates the figure. A more complex space would distract the viewer. Some of my works do have a more complex space, but for now I really prefer making the figure the focal point of the works. I would say that this is the one place where the figurative works and the fish works differ. The space in the Koi works is alive and fully present. The water, the plants, the reflections are one with the fish. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU PUT INTO THINKING ABOUT THE TITLES FOR YOUR WORK? Sometimes the title for a work comes as I am painting it, but it’s rare. Sometimes I ask my friends to title pieces. Unfortunately, I can’t express myself as well in English as I can in Russian, and some Russian words lose or change their meanings when translated. The language gap for me is still something I struggle with – the loss in translation is palpable. I’m really happy to open it up to your readers. If anyone has an idea for a title for one of my works, I’d be glad to hear it. Email me!

COOL GLOBES: HOT IDEAS FOR A COOLER PLANET THE PAST TEN YEARS ON EARTH HAVE BEEN THE WARMEST DECADE IN HISTORY. GLOBAL WARMING IS A FACT – AN ISSUE WE CAN NO LONGER IGNORE. IN NORTH AMERICA ALONE OVER 2.5 MILLION PLASTIC BOTTLES ARE THROWN AWAY EACH HOUR. EACH SUNDAY, OVER 500,000 TREES ARE USED TO PRODUCE THE 88 PERCENT OF NEWSPAPERS THAT NEVER GET RECYCLED. THE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH WILL INCREASE THREE TO ELEVEN DEGREES IN OUR CHILDREN’S LIFETIME IF WE DON’T DO SOMETHING TO STOP IT. IT’S CLEAR THAT OUR PLANET IS IN PERIL; THIS MONTH A CALL TO ACTION IS COMING TO HOUSTON.

Clinton Climate Initiative by Sandra Bacon

October 9th is the grand opening celebration of “Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet.” Fifty fiber-glass globes standing at five-feet wide, seven-feet tall, conveying inconvenient truths and practical solutions about global warming, will grace the grass at Houston’s newest urban park, Discovery Green. Each globe is artfully crafted by local, national and international artists.

A globe covered in crumpled plastic bottles speaks to a problem of plastic in landfills. A globe with pinwheels sends a message about the importance of wind energy. A globe covered in tire gauges makes a statement about fuel efficiency. Cool Globes is a community-based, art installation project making a large (literally and figuratively) message to corporations and individuals to adopt simple, everyday solutions to stop the illeffects of global warming. The best part of this exhibit is that it offers Houstonians – young and old – tangible, concrete and easy ways to make a change starting now.

Globes is a good place to start.” Her mission is not to focus on doom and gloom, but to finding a solution for her children and the millions of other children whose shoulders the responsibility of global warming will lie upon.

Rebuild Green Cities by Karen Perl

Mayor Bill White is a devoted advocate for the fight against global warming; “Partnering with Cool Globes is a fun way to remind Houstonians about how to reduce their energy consumption, recycle and improve air quality,” said White. “Public art puts the issues of global warming before our very eyes. Like our environment, it’s a message that knows no boundaries.” Before landing in Houston, the globes were displayed in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and San Diego. After their three-month stint in H-town, they are headed to Europe. Houston is far from a leader in national recycling programs and has a lot of room for improvement when it comes to conservation. Susan Bono from the Mayor’s Office of Special Projects believes, “We [as Houstonians] have really made improvements in recycling. Our recycling program is there, we just need to have people embrace it. [Cool Globes] is a way to encourage that. I think this exhibit will help the community at large to become more energy efficient.” She encourages Houstonians to take advantage of the wonderful bike trails and great public transit systems. Bono believes, “If collectively everybody does one thing, we can really make difference.” While global warming can be an overwhelming concept, it’s not about everybody doing everything, it’s about everybody doing something. “To most of us, the problem of global warming is overwhelming,” said Abrams, “We feel helpless and are not convinced that the small efforts we make to address climate change could really have an impact. However, there are solutions and simple actions we all can take in our daily lives to help reduce climate change. We can find something in this exhibit that we can change in our own lives.” Global warming is a problem that can be solved; Cool Globes is showing Houston it’s time to take make a change.

Founder and chairwoman of Cool Globes, Wendy Abrams is an eco-advocate, philanthropist, political whiz and mother of four. In April of 2001 she read a Give Me Five piece in Time magazine that questioned how our governby Blue Man Group ment could ignore the many warning signs of the dangerous reality of global warming. Her maternal instinct kicked in and she immediately knew she had to do something – Cool Globes was subsequently born. “We’ve reached a point where the public understands this is a probCool Globes, presented by Reliant Energy, will be showcased at Discovery Green lem,” says Abrams. “Now, people are saying, ‘Okay, so what do we do?’ Cool from October 8–December 31, 2009. 28. october 09 | www.002mag.com

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE

by Tim Moloney

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT’S BEEN 12 YEARS SINCE SPICE WORLD, THAT AWARD-WINNING SPICE GIRLS FILM, TOOK AMERICA BY STORM, DELIGHTING CRITICS AND AUDIENCES ALIKE? I WAS THINKING THIS THE OTHER DAY WHEN I WAS BROWSING AROUND PENZEY’S SPICES ON 19TH ST. IN THE HEIGHTS. THE LADY WORKING THERE TOLD ME THEY HAD BEEN OPEN NINE YEARS; I COULD HAVE SWORN THEY MOVED IN ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO. TIME FLIES WHETHER YOU’RE HAVING FUN OR NOT, AND SHAME ON ME FOR NOT DISCOVERING THIS CULINARY GEM SOONER. Anyway, in my ongoing quest to become a better cook, I dropped by Penzey’s to stock up on the essentials. If you’ve never been there, the store is amazing, and the prices are very reasonable, too; in fact, they’re much less than you’d pay at a local supermarket, and you know you’re getting fresh, high-quality ingredients. Seriously, you could spend hours checking out all the different herbs and spices…who knew there were about 20 kinds of salt? It’s sorta the same feeling I get when I’m in a hardware store like Southland Hardware (“The Store That Has Almost Everything”) – a trance that leads me from aisle to aisle and when I wake up an hour later, I’m clutching 10 bags of different-sized nails, 20 pounds of organic plant food and some latticework. Too bad I’m a worse do-ithimself-er than I am a cook. My intentions are good.

FALL IN LINE It’s only 80 degrees…that means fall is upon us! Denim, as always, is big again this fall, but a lot of people are toning it down – or beating it up. I was listening to this radio spot for Dockers Jeans (this is not a recommendation) the other day and it was really funny, talking about guys wearing girly, embellished, embroidered jeans, when a real man wears Dockers Jeans. I’m going somewhere with this. I then remembered reading in Details that no less an authority than Ashley Olson (the pretty one, not the manic elfin one), who is bringing out a men’s collection for The Row (the-row.com and she gets it), said that every guy should toss embellished jeans from his closet. I think the uni-

verse is trying to tell us something, folks. First Dockers, then one half of Full House’s Michelle Tanner? It can’t be a coincidence. So what’s a Wise Guy to do? Let’s approach it from two wildly different angles. Cult brand Kicking Mule (available at oaknyc.com) is offering the 1980 Breton Rinse distressed jeans – which look awesome cuffed – of 100% Zimbabwean cotton, and made in Japan. The $335 price tag is pretty hefty, so here’s another option: Calvin Klein Jeans Body, which combine denim technology with underwear science. No, there aren’t any built-in drawers, but the crotch area features extra layers of fabric to give you an enhanced “profile.” Available in two rinses, these “wonderjeans” are only $79.50 and are available at calvinkleinjeans.com. Schwing!

SPEED IT UP I think I may be going through a premature midlife crisis, because all I can think about these days is buying a mint 78-81 Trans Am with metallic T-Tops and the screaming bird decal on the hood. Cruising around town in my padded-front jeans, the wind in my hair…welcome to Club Awesome. If anyone knows of such a car for sale, please contact me here at the magazine. I’ll cook for you using all my new spices in appreciation for the hookup.

AND THAT’S ABOUT IT. I’M OFF TO NEW YORK ON THURSDAY FOR SOME R AND R AND WILL BE REPORTING BACK ON THE TRIUMPHS AND TRAGEDIES OF OUR GOTHAM BRETHREN. UNTIL NEXT MONTH, GUYS, STAY WISE…AND MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE OCT. 7 MARCH OF DIMES CELEBRITY CHEFS DINNER AT THE OMNI CHAIRED BY FRIENDS OF THE COLUMN, GREGGORY BURK AND ELIZABETH PETERSEN. A FUN NIGHT AND AN AFTER-PARTY AT THE BLACK SWAN FEATURING HOT LADY HOSTS LIKE JOYCE ECHOLS, ALLIE FIELDS AND THE INDOMITABLE KRISTEN CANNON. SEE YOU THERE!

ONE MAN’S DREAM… A PROFILE OF DALE CHIHULY BECOMING ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST RECOGNIZED ARTISTS IS A DREAM FOR MANY, BUT MOST OFTEN REMAINS ONLY A DREAM – RARELY DOES IT BECOME A REALITY. DALE CHIHULY MADE IT TO THE TOP, BUT THE JOURNEY GETTING THERE WAS NOT ALWAYS AN EASY ONE. Chihuly was a student of interior design and architecture in the early 1960s. By 1965, he had become captivated by the art of blowing glass. He enrolled in the hot glass program offered by the University of Wisconsin. The program was founded by Harvey Littleton, the father of the Contemporary Studio Movement in America. In 1968, Chihuly was awarded a Fulbright grant to study glassblowing in Murano, Venice. It is often said his inspiration for his glass designs came from his experiences there. After Venice, he traveled to see the Libenskys in Czechoslovakia. Their workshop was known for their heavy cast glass sculptures. From there he went to Germany to visit one of his favorite glass artists, Erwin Eisch. Chihuly received a degree in sculpture, then entered the ceramics program at the Rhode Island School of Design. There he founded the school’s glass program, which has produced numerous recognized artists.

Chihuly didn’t stop there, also co-founding the Pilchuck School in Washington in 1971. The Pilchuck School has brought artists worldwide together into the program, placing the area on the map as a mecca for contemporary artists. In the fall of 1975, Chihuly was scheduled to lecture at a university in Ireland when tragedy struck. He was in an automobile accident that took one of his eyes. This could have been the end of a career for most artists, but not Chihuly. With the struggles of losing his depth perception came new collaborations. He was now less tied to the actual blowing of the glass, and could spend more of his efforts drawing and photographing his latest creations. In 1978, Chihuly was offered a solo show at Renwick Gallery (part of The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.) – a huge career move. Since that time, Chihuly’s works have traveled to museums all over the world. Documentaries about his life and his works air regularly on PBS. His dream of blowing glass has led from the Rhode Island School of Design to Chihuly, Inc., a multimilliondollar-a-year company creating glass for corporations, museums and collectors worldwide. If you’ve not had a “Chihuly” experience yet, you can find his works on display at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, the San Antonio Public Library and at The University of Texas Business Building in San Antonio. There will also be a show and sale of his work at the Dunn and Brown Contemporary in Dallas, Texas, through October 24.

Local transplant, Benjamin Wesley’s songs are “the laments of reality, the confessions of an attraction to trouble and contemplations of everything beautiful and cruel.” The almost melancholic Wesley serenaded the photo shoot set with his impromptu acoustics, leaving staff and the legendary library ghosts speechless. He has been a part of various local bands but after returning from Germany where he went to study, he returned to his solo endeavors. His new work “Geschichte” (means both “history” and “story” in German) speaks of “progress and loss, squeezing lemons and climbing mountains, being selfish and wanting peace of mind.” For information, contact: benjaminwesleywinder3@gmail.com, benjaminwesley.net, sonicbids.com/benjaminwesley or call 832.262.8380 46. october 09 | www.002mag.com

THINGS I LIKE LOVE

By Carla Valencia de Martinez Photography by Sofia van der Dys

A couple months ago, my husband and I woke up one weekend morning and decided to get bikes. As thorough as he is my husband pulls out his iPhone (which at times I really think he just might love more than me) and on his maps application enters “bike stores” and lo-and-behold a bevy of the city’s best pops up on the phone. And so we spent the day from store to store until we found ourselves back at Bike Barn. I LOVE my bike. I hadn’t been on one in years, and the saying is true – “you never do forget.”

I’ll be taking my first bike adventure (baby steps, people) with Bayou City Outdoors (BCO) on October 24. To help elevate awareness of Houston’s hidden gems, BCO, a Houston-based social outdoors club, will host a fun and casual 15-mile bike tour starting at 8:30am to help familiarize participants with the city’s landscape. Gearing up at Onion Creek (3106 White Oak Blvd., 77007), the ride will guide us to a number of farmers markets around town like T’afia and Urban Harvest. To learn more about the tour, visit bayoucityoutdoors.com.

I swear I was never this forgetful. Lately I can’t find anything! I left my iPod Nano in the back pocket of my running shorts, which I then washed and dried. Then I bought a new one, which I used once and managed to lose it at the club I work out at. I leave the house every day hoping I have my cell phone and my house key. The EZ-Find system keeps track of 25 things with a transmitter, which you set up (the instructions are easy to follow). Granted I don’t have that many, but I might put one on my brain.

Found throughout Korea, Japan and China, black garlic made its debut stateside last month at Central Market. The hard-to-get garlic is traditionally aged in earthenware jugs in caves or basements. It’s not hard like the version we are used to, rather it’s soft and spreadable. The all-natural, additiveand preservative-free garlic is delicious and is loaded with nearly twice as many antioxidants as its raw counterpart. It also contains S-Allyl cysteine, a natural compound that has been proven to be a factor in cancer prevention. I FINALLY got my hands on some cloves and have found ways to incorporate the stuff into every meal I’ve made.

Love Halloween! It’s the official beginning of my favorite seasons of the year: fall/winter Houston style. Beautiful Sweets Organic Bakery, based in historic Littleton, Colorado, is a cookie creator cranking out organic customdesigned, handcrafted cookies from only all-natural ingredients for any occasion. These Halloween-themed ones come with their own markers to decorate!

DESTINATION

ST. REGIS BORA BORA

GETTING THERE: FLY HOUSTON, IAH TO LOS ANGELES LAX. FROM THERE FLY AIR TAHITI NUI TO PAPEETE, FRENCH POLYNESIA, WHERE THE ST. REGIS PICKS YOU UP AT THE AIRPORT AND WHISKS YOU AWAY TO THE RESORT. IT’S NOT THE SHORTEST OR EASIEST OF FLIGHTS, BUT THE DESTINATION IS WELL WORTH THE JOURNEY. FOR RESORT AND TRAVELINFORMATION, VISIT WWW.STREGIS.COM/BORABORA | WWW.AIRTAHITINUI-USA.COM

T

he St. Regis Bora Bora is unlike any other destination we’ve seen. Located in the South Pacific islands of French Polynesia, the St. Regis encompasses 44 acres of breathtaking views, pristine aqua waters, hordes of marine life and some of the most magnificent almost prehistoric landscapes.

The property has bicycles on site, which are a great way to explore and get around, just don ’t get t oo at ta ched – any other guest can hop on where you left it.

Although I refuse to linger on the honeymooner aspect of this destination, it is no wonder that this has long been the destination of choice… I just w on der if w e’v e all miss ed a t rue get aw ay by dism issing t he locat ion as just t hat . No doubt you’ve seen the trailers for the new film dropping this month – Couples Retreat with Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau and Kristen Davis, to name a few. Major portions of the movie feature the St. Regis Bora Bora. So if you need more convincing, check out the movie – that should do it.

Exotic thick wood floor planks invite you to press bare feet onto the uneven cool floors. Sliding doors t hrough out lead you t o end less seascapes f rom a ll v iew point s of t he villa. Although there is a state-of-the-art plasma screen and cable, the surroundings will have you finding other ways to spend your time. The bathroom is divine; two-sided vanities with an opening in the middle. Our villa faced Mount Otemanu showing its many moods, from clear perfect peaks, to hazy mysterious days, to crisp freshly rained on mornings. Marble countertops and a walk-in doorless shower with a large rain shower as well as a large bathtub welcome after a long day in the great outdoors.

The St. Regis opened in June 2006 and remains one of the most beautifully laid out resorts in the area featuring 100 serene over-water and beach villas, some with terrace whirlpools or private swimming pools. One-, two- and three-bedroom villas range in size from 1,550 square feet to the resort’s ultra-luxurious 13,000-square-foot Royal Estate, set apart in a secluded cove.

Bora Bora either instills complete relaxation or in our case, it inspired healthy activity:we ran along the property every day and inhaled the fresh air, devouring the landscape as if we’d never see it again. On th e sp a sid e of t he resor t , t here are endless w hit e beach es, but n ot f rom sand, rat her f rom cr ushed coral pieces. Kayaking is worth the adventure as there are so many nooks and crannies throughout the 44 acres to be explored. The waters are relatively calm (unless rain is brewing) so you shouldn’t fear heading out. If you are a diver, the waters are superb. Some of the most amazing marine-life is to be seen in Bora Bora because of the reefs. If you are not a diver then this is a reason alone to make this a vacation destination – certification here is prime. We w ent on v arious div es, bu t on one in par t icular, we dove with black-tip sharks, sea turtles, massive lobsters, sting rays, a bevy of fish in colors that simply do not exist on land and towards the end of that dive I even caught a glimpse of a lemon shark! Now, if activity is not your main goal, the St. Regis gym is one of the best I’ve seen in our travels. The spa Miri Miri is a 13,000-square-foot escape located on its own island in the lagoon, accessible by a footbridge, and features Tahitian and Pacific Rim treatments in seven treatment rooms. The lagoon is another one of those areas beautiful to explore by kayak or foot.

over water villa

There are three restaurants to choose from including a signature Jean-Georges over-water restaurant, Lagoon, which would be the more dressy option. Seaf ood is t he st ar, alt hough t here are ot he r opt ion s. It just does n’t get an y m ore f resh t han at a n ov er-w at er res tauran t, does it? Sushi Take – Bora Bora’s first sushi restaurant – serves up mouth-watering fresh fare. And it’s small, which means make a reservation; it fills up. Te Pahu serves breakfast and lunch.

Photography by Carla & Alex Martinez

Most resorts lack in one area or another, but we could not find one thing….OK, actually just one. One night we stayed in for dinner, we had a Häagen-Dazs® craving, and the resort was all out! But other than that, the accommodations, the activities, the views and the food are exactly what you’ll need to not step foot off the resort. Seriously, you’ll be d isappoint ed by w h erev er y ou t r y – although the water taxi trip back in the moonlight is breathtaking.

WHETHER SHE’S BACKSTAGE DURING NEW YORK’S FASHION WEEK OR CREATING A GHASTLY BEAST FOR BEAUTY, WAGENER OFTEN FINDS HERSELF PLAYING BOTH JEKYLL AND HYDE. HERE SHE TURNS KEVIN MEADE INTO A STYLISHLY ‘EDWARDIAN’ VAMPIRE. Photography by Gabriella Nissen Step-by-step by Carol Wagener

WITH THE RECENT POPULARITY OF VAMPIRE LORE, WE’RE ALL FAR TOO SAVVY FOR THE COUNT CHOCULA CAPES AND WIDOW’S PEAKS! IN JUST A FEW SIMPLE STEPS, YOU’LL BE WELL ON YOUR WAY TO RENDERING YOUR VICTIMS POWERLESS WITH THESE SUBTLE AND BELIEVABLE MAKEUP TECHNIQUES! READY-MADE VAMPIRE MAKEUP KITS INCLUDE ALL OF THE COLORS FOR REALISTIC UNDEAD PALLOR. FOR UPCLOSE AUTHENTICITY, SCARECROW BRAND FANGS CAN BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY.

To create the classic gaunt vampire look, undertones are added to the face. Using the darkest grey tone in your makeup kit, hollow out the eye sockets and cheekbones. Highlight just along the tops of the cheekbones with your lightest tone to create contrast. Blend lightly. Don’t be a scaredy cat with your application – the end result is deadly.

DON’T: Apply blood to the bite wounds before first adding foundation to the wound edges and setting it with powder! Talk about a nightmare!

Using prosthetic adhesive, apply your bite wounds. For fast application, apply the glue to the bite wounds and allow it to become slightly tacky before placing it on your neck.

With a makeup sponge, apply vampire foundation to the face and neck with a ‘press and roll‘ motion. Lightly cover the undertones created in Step One. Cover the edges of the bite wounds with foundation; this will make the makeup much more believable. Powder the face, neck and bite wounds to set the makeup. There’s nothing more scary than a shiny immortal!

DON’T: Use traditional, department store foundation over your bite wounds! Theater makeup is specially formulated to cover prosthetics; traditional makeup will break up and dissolve. What a fright!

Add blood to bite wounds, allowing blood to flow from wound holes. Put in those killer canines and add a touch of red to the lips using a dark wine tone. Apply lip color with your finger to get that naturally stained look.

PUT IN THOSE INFAMOUSLY AMBER EYES AND LINE THEM IN BLACK. WAIT UNTIL TWILIGHT; PROWL MYSTERIOUSLY!

LINDSAY BISHOP, GENSLER The Gensler team: Lindsay Bishop, Bruna Colosio, Candice Maricle, Suzanne Gross, Maria Perez, Debora Walker, Ruth Ortiz, Rob Bradford Project name: Lindsay’s Pork Chop models What motivated you to enter Barkitecture? I have been volunteering regularly with several local dog rescue groups. I currently help at the weekend pet adoptions at Highland Village, and Pup Squad is one of the two groups present there. I was thrilled when I heard of the opportunity to use my creativity to help Pup Squad and its animals. Do you have a dog? I have a Jack Russell Terrier. He is 3-ish (not sure – he is a rescue). Your dog’s favorite toy? Pork Chop loves any stuffed animal that squeaks. He likes to tear them apart and rip out all of the stuffing. He also loves to play hide and seek with his bone. I hide the bone and he finds it every time!

through a quick response to reconstructive programs due to disasters. What motivated you to enter Barkitecture? We are a nonprofit organization and we happen to be dog lovers. What better way to help out our friends? What do you love most about it? The fact that we are working together for a common goal. Do you have a dog? Maya is 3 months and Sandy is 9 years old! Best place in Houston to hang out with your dog children? Miller Outdoor Theater. What can the next mayor focus on to help make Houston more dog-friendly? I think we should have more programs, whether it is assistance programs or even training classes. This would increase the safety awareness some people have with certain breeds. Favorite pet store? PetSmart! I love the doggie bars with the treats! Best doggie day care? Dogs Day Out, Humble, Texas.

CARRIE HALL, FKP ARCHITECTS, INC. Project name: Rover Residence Do you have a dog? Yes, Spaniel-mix, 9 years old. What idea does your firm want to leave on the Dog Lover World and why? Every pet, whether it’s a cat, dog, bird or other, needs and deserves a safe and loving home. Best place in Houston to hang out with your dog children? Barnaby’s on Shepherd. Best kennel for boarding? Best Friends Pet Care. If you were a dog, what breed would you be and where would you live? Spaniel or spaniel-mix. I would hopefully be part of a family that loved, trained and hunted with me regularly.

CORY WAGNER AND MAT WOLFF Project name: Dumptruck – an open artists collaborative What motivated you to enter Barkitecture? As we are not natives, we are very interested in Texan culture. Our work explores the idiom of art making in Texas. The way people live and the homes are built in Houston is interesting to us. What do you love most about it? Playing with the materials and little details and having fun doing it. As artists we do a lot of conceptual work. It was exciting to get back to this straightforward method: make a plan and build something. It takes us back to the roots of our education. Do you have a dog? Adopted wire-haired terrier mix nicknamed Dumptruck, which is what we named our artists collaborative. What do you feed your dog? Wellness Whitefish and Salmon...it’s stinky but I brush her teeth! Your dog’s favorite toy? Her Kong with peanut butter. Best v et ? Montrose Veterinary Clinic. If you were a dog, what breed would you be and where would you live? Be a mutt and live in Austin.

DUMPTRUCK

2009 BISCUIT LANE

Besides it being an outlet for us to be creative, Barkitecture is for a very good cause. What do you love most about it? I love the fact that all proceeds go to Pup Squad. I sometimes volunteer at pet adoption events and the people at these rescue groups are so selfless and wonderful. The compassion they have for the well-being of all animals is truly amazing. Do you have a dog? Yes. She’s a 9-year-old black lab mix whom we rescued from the jaws of euthanasia over 5 years ago. I get rescue emails and saw this one in particular that tore my heart out. This dog had been found with tags, her owners contacted, but they never came to get her. As with all larger black dogs, the likelihood of her being adopted was slim to none and death through euthanasia was imminent. I didn’t think twice – went and rescued her. What idea does your firm want to leave on the Dog Lover World and why? My personal serious answer would be: Through collaboration, in a city as big as ours, we can reduce, if not eliminate, pet euthanasia as a primary answer to the problem of the over-population of abandoned pets. By means of proper pet education and low cost sterilization, our city can follow the footsteps of other US cities to become no-kill. The fun answer would be: Even our fur-babies deserve a fun and comfortable place to lay their head. Does your dog sleep in your bed with you? Absolutely! I end up with one sliver of the edge while she sleeps stretched out, perpendicular to me, of course.

MORRIS ARCHITECTS

JACKI CRAIG, MORRIS ARCHITECTS What motivated you to enter Barkitecture? Our firm enjoys participating in design competitions, and quite a few of us are avid dog lovers, so it seemed like a perfect fit! Do you have a dog? I have a Yorkshire terrier who is four years old. Can you take your dog to work? Technically, no. We work in a large corporate office building downtown, but I would be lying if I said she hasn’t been smuggled in once or twice! Favorite pet store? The Dog Bowl on Sunset Blvd. What do you feed your dog? She’s on a raw food diet. It’s somewhat expensive, but her coat and eyes are dramatically clearer, and with the amount she eats (she only weighs 4 lbs.!) it is a viable option. Do you have pet insurance? I don’t, but I have been fortunate with my dog’s health. Preventative care is the key! Your dog’s favorite toy? My dog’s favorite toy is anything she should not have. She gets into all kinds of trouble. Best dog park? Millie Bush Bark Park. Best vet? I take Roxy to the Sunset Blvd. Animal Clinic. Best groomer? Gizzie’s, off Shepherd. If you were a dog, what breed would you be and where would you live? I think I might enjoy being a movie dog, like Lassie!

HAL LYNDE / ANSWERING FINANCIAL QUESTIONS THAT COUNT HOW CAN I RAISE CAP ITAL FOR MY BUSINESS? The two general categories of financing available for businesses are debt and equity. Debt requires repayment of a loan. Equity involves raising capital by selling parts of the business to investors.

hal lynde

How much money your business needs, what the financing is needed for (start-up, expansion, new development), as well as how your business is organized, its size and its stage in the business life cycle (start-up, growth phase, mature) are just a few of the things that may influence your efforts to raise capital. If yours is a new business without a track record, you may have difficulty raising capital from lenders or investors. A first place to look for capital might be your own assets. You may be able to raise money for the business from your savings or borrow against a retirement plan, life insurance policy, credit card or the equity in your home. If your business is more established, you may be able to borrow from a number of sources. You can apply to banks or credit unions for loans. You can contact the Small Business Administration for information on the programs it administers to help businesses obtain financing. Your local chamber of commerce may be able to put you in touch with state and local agencies that provide financial assistance to new businesses located within your geographic area. You need to have a detailed business plan to provide to potential lenders or investors. Your options to raise equity may include wealthy private investors known as angels, venture capital firms, private placement of equity and investment clubs. Small business investment companies may act as lenders or investors. For some corporations, an initial public offering is used to generate large sums of cash through the sale of company stock. A potential drawback of equity financing is that investors may expect to exercise some control in the running of the business. There are also internal business sources for raising business capital. Consider offering incentives to your customers for early cash payment (such as a discount) to accelerate your collections and free up operating cash. You may choose to lease company assets rather than buy them. Finally, your company may be able to negotiate special delayed-payment terms with suppliers or factor accounts receivable, which entails getting an advance on money owed to you.

Quest ion s t hat w ill be answ ered in upcoming iss ues of 002 houst on m agazine : Can I get disability insurance if I’m self-employed? Should I convert my Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA? BUSINESS PROFILE

Page 64

Photography by Cody Bess

EILEEN CAMPBELL | MARATHON OIL IS THIS YOUR INTENDED CAREER PATH? IF NOT, HOW DID YOU GET HERE? Actually, no. I always wanted to do something in the political arena or government affairs and that’s where I began my professional career, serving as a lobbyist for over 15 years. Clarence Cazalot was then appointed the new CEO of Marathon and he asked me to join his team as Vice President of Human Resources and the first female officer in the corporation’s history. I was a little taken aback and had honestly never thought about human resources as a career choice but after some thought, it seemed a natural fit. I love people and human resources is all about people. What could be more natural than that? WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? From an early age, I was fascinated with government, serving as class president in high school and working with my local city council, so I would say a job in government was my dream, to be a part of the political process and give back a bit of myself to this great country. WHY HOUSTON? I was offered a transfer through my job from Chicago to Houston and just 10 days later the same thing happened to my husband, Doug. Realizing it was meant to be, we both said yes and made the big move. For 25 years we have lived and loved in Houston, raising our two beautiful daughters, enjoying our lives and meeting some of the most loyal and wonderful friends in the world. FAVORITE BOOK? A Gift from the Sea by Anne Lindbergh – A woman goes away to a summer cottage on the shore and shares analogies about her life as compared to the seashells she finds. Though her lyrical words, Lindbergh creates a bond with women everywhere who are searching for themselves. I love the beach and this book has phenomenal parallels between the seashells that she finds and the phases of our lives. A quick read, but very powerful. FAVORITE BAND? Fleetwood Mac – Don’t Stop Thinking about Tomorrow is one of my favorites – upbeat and full of energy. I identify with that song and its promise to keep looking ahead. WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION? I have many, but my mother was my biggest single inspiration. Her infallible wisdom still gets me through each day… You can do anything if you just try. In business, it is my company, Marathon Oil, who has stood by me through my fight with breast cancer not just in word but in deed by sponsoring the Komen Houston Race for the Cure® for 5 years. Collectively, my biggest inspiration is standing at the start line of the Race, staring out over a sea of pink and joining 30,000 of my closest friends as we attempt to inspire others to join in the fight to end breast cancer.

64. october 09 | www.002mag.com

BIGGEST LIFE LESSON LEARNED? If I learned anything through my struggle with breast cancer, it is that the human spirit is strong and there is a lot we can handle with dignity and grace when we have support. I learned that people are truly amazing and that even the smallest gestures and gifts of help are the most meaningful.

WHAT DEFINES HOUSTON AS YOUR “HOMETOWN”? The people. Houston is a city welcoming to all and has been great to me and my family. The great people I work with at Marathon and their incredibly giving spirit and the friends I have made through Komen have made it hard to imagine living anywhere else.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? I want to be remembered as a good person who cared a lot about her family, friends, co-workers and community and that I was able to help those who were not as fortunate as I. I also want to be remembered not for having breast cancer but for helping to end breast cancer.

TEXANS STILL HAVE A REPUTATION FOR BRAGGING. WHAT WOULD YOU BRAG ABOUT? My wonderful family, of course, but I am also very proud of being the President of the Komen Houston Affiliate which was just named the number one Komen Affiliate in the world for money given back to the community! That means that we have done more for the fight to end breast cancer than any other city in the world!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was in 8th grade when I sold ice cream at Carvel and worked on the people skills I would need for my later career. My first professional job was as a governmental representative for New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne in his Washington, DC office, finally realizing my dream of working in government. WHAT DO YOU PLAN ON DOING WHEN YOU RETIRE? More work for Komen, ensuring that men and women who are facing breast cancer have the help and support that is needed to face and overcome this terrible disease. WHAT LUXURY (ITEM OR SERVICE) DO YOU WISH YOU COULD INDULGE YOURSELF WITH? A massage a week…it is my favorite indulgence!

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER A HIDDEN TREASURE OF HOUSTON? The Houston Medical Center – it’s easy to overlook this amazing facility until you actually need it but, when you do, it’s nice to know we have the greatest hospitals in the world right in our backyard. Through the Houston Race for the Cure®, Komen has given millions to hospitals in the Medical Center and we are proud to help this Houston treasure grow. IF YOU COULD STOP AND DO ANYTHING YOU WANTED TOMORROW, THIS WEEKEND, WHENEVER – WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would invite everyone in the Komen Houston seven county service area to the Houston Race for the Cure® this Saturday, October 3, in Downtown Houston and ask them to join us in the fight to end breast cancer forever.

SUSP: SPORT UTILITY STYLE AND PERFORMANCE GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN DRIVING A SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE TRANSLATED TO DRIVING A BOXY, SLUGGISH, GAS-GUZZLING BUS!

2009 VW TOUREG V6 TDI

2009 INFINITI EX35 RWD JOURNEY

MSRP: $50,300 Mileage: 17/25 Annual fuel: $1,703 @ $2.27 (diesel)

MSRP: $36,000 Mileage: 17/24 Annual fuel: $2,099 @ $2.66 (premium)

If value is the bottom line in your search for a stylish, well-performing German car with go anywhere SUV features, all the modern-day beauty and function of a high-end vehicle with smart fuel mileage, then you want the new VW Toureg V6 TDI! The exterior features of this Audi-esque German classic are defined by sleek lines and curves, coupled with that big, bodacious signature grill as found on all VW and Audi products. Under the hood Toureg sports a never-power-deficient 225 horsepower V6 turbo diesel with signature 4XMOTION all-wheel drive. As a matter of fact, it blows my mind to be reminded that a car with this much power behind the pedal has just 225 horses under the hood. Blame it on the turbo!

The EX35 has taken its rightful place alongside big sibling FX, offering sleek styling, performance prestige and excitement on the down low. EX’s hefty stance from the rear, with further highlights by way of the sporty rooftop spoiler and chrome tip exhaust pipes, is (in my opinion) reminiscent of a well-groomed pit bull on display at a dog show. And to catch a glimpse of the chic side silhouette of this car you can’t help but smile and say ”daaaaang, that’s hot!” Rated a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and “Best New Road Trip Vehicle” by Kelly Blue Book, EX’s Lane Departure Prevention (reminding you to stay in your lane only) and Around View Monitor (when in reverse the camera displays a bird’s-eye view on the monitor) are worthy of first mention. Next up is the 297 horsepower V6 providing excellent get-up-and-go for a vehicle this size.

INTERIOR FAVORITES INCLUDE: • Keyless– Touch the door handle to lock/unlock; push button start/stop • Simple to use navigation with rear camera, Xenon lights, Bluetooth • All-around window defrost, rain sensor speed control wipers • Chill box in center console to keep beverages cold • Power open/close liftgate keeps hands sanitary • The elite look of a monochromatic interior fully trimmed in leather makes clean up a cinch! • Excellent sound system with fully integrated iPod /mp3 connection And the entire time you will never know by the purrrrr of the engine, or the absence of those God-awful fumes as with diesels of the past, that you’re driving a diesel. That’s why they call TDI—“clean diesel!”

TWEAKERS MINI SPEAKERS Listening to music on a laptop computer does not allow for hi-fidelity sound. If you aren’t into headphones, here is a set of speakers small enough to travel with and great sound to boot. Tweakers pull ‘n play mini speakers provide monster sound no matter where you are. Simply give the speakers a twist and the top portion expands upward. It’s that extra space that gives these speakers bass you can feel. NANTUCKET DIDDY BAGG DIGITAL PHOTO TO DVD CONVERTER With the advent of digital cameras, snapping photos is an easy task, but archiving and processing those photos afterwards can be quite a pain. Here’s a remedy... The Digital Photo to DVD Converter has a direct method to make copies of your favorite memories onto a DVD without the need for a PC. Photos are converted into MPEG format and burned onto a CD, which can be placed in a DVD player for slide show viewing. It also doubles up as a DVD player and can hook up directly to your TV via S-Video inputs. Perfect from the elderly folk who can’t tell the difference between left and right clicks.

Everything needs fixin’, as we say in Texas. And we need tools. The Nantucket Diddy Bagg is something that every home, car and man cave needs in case of hardware breakage. The bag’s coolest features are its straps and zipper. The adjustable straps allow you to carry it in a variety of ways – including as a backpack – and the zipper allows you to lay the whole thing out flat for access or cleaning. You can even attach it to the wall as a permanent, yet portable, means of tool storage. Everything feels indestructible, from the thick, poly rope to the rigid canvas. And it delivers on its multipurpose claims, working just as well when used as an art supplies bag, a gardener’s bag or, honestly, any kind of bag.

iny Box w ood’s has a w him sical charm t o it t hat is lik ened t o th e Secret Ga rden. With large overgrown fruit sculptures reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland adorning, plush Technicolor green grass, stepping into Tiny Boxwood’s is like stepping out of Houston into another world. Much of its beauty can also be credited to Thompson and Hanson Nursery located just across that Technicolor lawn for your viewing pleasure. They are sister locations after all. Once you step through the green landscape fence, large crisp cream umbrellas dot the landscape with wooden and wicker furniture providing shabby chic seating. Ivy crawls up the white stucco as if it followed a pattern framing the lantern light fixtures. It’s no guess why ladies love to lunch, families convene for breakfast and couples enjoy romantic dates at this charming storybook-like cafe.

European flair is sprinkled here and there from the menu to the décor to even serving size. Don’t ex p ect heapin g por t ions. This is a charming café and no one wants to see horse pail mounds on tabletops. Wicker seating with metal tabletops or antique wooden tables make up the inside dining room, with a marble countertop lining the wall. Behind the massive marble bar is the cashier, a glimpse into the kitchen, the wood-burning oven for pizza and the expansive espresso bar. Do expect the menu to vary somewhat daily; this goes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Masterminds Chef Baron and Sous Chef Tracy are foodies. Inspirat ion can s trik e at a m omen t’s not ice w hen f resh produce is around. Do expect breakfast, brunch and lunch menus to be handwritten on the chalkboard on the wall with café style service. I personally enjoy the limited options because it makes for swift decision making. Dinner is the exception. Seated by a hostess, you are given a menu to peruse. The menu changes monthly as the selection for fresh/in season produce/ingredients or availability changes. It’s all about the food and the masterminds who love food. Up to 3 of f-t he-men u s pecials could be cook ed up all in one m orning.

My particular dinner consisted of their smokey goat cheese lamb burger with pomme frites and a halibut with couscous. Never having tried lamb out of fear, I was apprehensive but I remembered my task at hand and took a bite. The marriage of flavors was astounding! The house hand-ground lamb tasted deliciously grilled and was complimented beautifully with the creamy smoked goat cheese with tomato and mint relish on top. And t hen y ou get t hat surprise flav or, in t he back ground t ha t add s som e dept h, being t he anchov y aioli. You have got to dissect this burger to see everything that is going on to create such harmony. It’s a full, rich complexity of flavors. Definitely not recommended for those “I’d like to eat light” days. For those days, you have halibut. The extremely fresh (they told me they’d just received the batch) white fish came with a lemon basil pesto couscous with feta cheese chunks, roasted tomatoes and whole mushrooms in a champagne beurre blanc sauce and cilantro oil. f ect ion is an u nderst atem ent . Neither the sauce nor the oil overpowered the freshness of the fish itself. (A true feat in my mind. If you are trying to cover up the taste of the fish, then something’s fishy to me.) The tender flakiness of the fish and the fluffiness of the couscous pairs nicely with the burst of juiciness from the roasted tomatoes and mushrooms. Expect the unexpected is a good mantra to remember when ordering. I could eat t heir French P icnic st ar ter at t w ilight ever y day w it h a glass of ch ard onn ay, overlooking the nursery, topped off with a delicious espresso con panna. The point is the food itself. The quality is apparent in even the smallest of things, from the quality of chocolate in their always gooey, irresistible chocolate chip cookies to the intoxicating whipped goat cheese. These small details make every bite like a fairy tale ending. Run by people who truly love food, Tiny Boxwood’s is every bit enchanting as it is whimsical.

ould you say you’ve got a little bit more of a rough edge to your voice when you sing in Spanish? I was under the impression that my stuff in Spanish was an outlet for singing really pretty, no kidding. Maybe not, then? Funny, I was told just a couple of days ago that I should stick to Spanish. Am I cooler in Spanish? Do I sound uncool in English? Am I too old to be pondering “cool”? All valid questions. Doesn’t everyone sound cooler in Spanish? David Johansen doesn’t. Touché. A lot of your songs are in movies, television, commercials and the like. You probably don’t conceive them commercially, but what do you think it adds or takes away from the song when it is put on that level? I’m too busy hustling to answer this one. I know you recorded your last record with one microphone. Did you do anything different in the production this time? Ha. Same mic but this time I moved back into the house that I grew up in for

a few months to make it. In other words, “Totally broke, can’t find a job? Why not move back in with the folks for a bit and make a record?” It’s called (281) and I played everything on it – which was a first for me. It was a very odd and sometimes disturbing three months. A lot of ghosts in northwest Houston, and UFOs too. Could have sworn that I saw one while I was recording vocals for “I’m the Cold One.” When you listen to the song – it’s such a groovy song that if you can imagine seeing a UFO while grooving to this shit, it would be like a P-Funk show. I ended up changing the lyrics and writing about the experience. So between that kind of stuff and the rest – which is about me wondering if I’m the old stoner that I made fun of when I was little kid – it still manages to be my first party record, I feel. Yeah, what’s up with the UFOs? They’re just “cool.” Arthur’s newest effort, entitled (281), is out now.

PETE’S DUELING PIANO BAR

1201 fannin st. #310, houston, tx 77002 [houston pavilions] | 713.337.7383 | www.petesduelingpianobar.com

A

TICKLING THE IVORIES LIKE NO OTHER fter hours of exhausting research and extensive field studies, a panel of my colleagues and I recently released our conclusions that there is a direct, positive correlation between the number of Shiner Bocks I have consumed and my musical talent (see figure A*). This news will surely have a profound impact on the beer and recording industries, as well as my mom’s opinion that those five years of piano lessons and a brief parlay in choir were “wasted.”

far more diverse than your typical piano place. Sure, they resort to everyone’s favorite tunes and quips from time to time, but quite frankly, if I set foot in such a piano palace and didn’t hear “Walking in Memphis” or a little Sir Elton at least once that evening, I would consider it a disaster.

After a grueling day at the office surfing YouTube, listening to cat lady stories and pretending to understand basic math, my associates and I planned to test our hypothesis at Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar on 1201 Fannin, a secluded laboratory tucked away in the Houston Pavilions. The venue was perfect. A more intelligently designed space than your typical piano bar, Pete’s is spacious enough for huge parties, but the majority of tables are just big enough for three at a time to keep things intimate if absolutely necessary. But above all else, like every Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar, the room is designed for perfect acoustics and showcasing the entertainment.

You may have seen Pete’s Dueling Piano Bars in certain large metropolitan areas to the north which I cannot remember the names of, but don’t think for a minute that Pete’s isn’t all HTown at heart. Everything from the laid-back crowd of 20- to 40-somethings to the smiling faces and friendly service of the staff is Houston proud. Pete’s realizes that Downtown is in the midst of a vigorous resurgence, and their tucked-away location in the Pavilions is a well-kept secret that they know is about to get out in a very big way.

I know what you’re saying: All piano bars are practically the same. Just stop. Comparing Pete’s to “any old piano bar” is like comparing the Houston Astros to a AAA ball club. OK, maybe that wasn’t the best example, but you get the point. Pete’s is the granddaddy of them all. To keep our research scientific here, we’ll call Pete’s the Big Bang of piano bars. Was it the first? Is it the last? Beats me, but it’s the one that matters. The entertainment is an explosion of stars, all with a different attitude and approach to tickling the ivories. Pete’s home-grows their talent and keeps them in the Pete’s family to ensure that patrons get the very best every night, Wednesday through Saturday from 7 ‘til they kick everyone out. Bad days, birthdays, bachelorette blowouts, the wedding and the divorce – no matter what’s on the calendar, Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar is there to show you a good time. Don’t feel like hopping on stage and dancing like a chicken at the bequest of the piano masters for the amusement of the crowd? No worries; Pete’s brings a fresh concept to piano bars by not relying on patrons for entertainment value – unless it’s your birthday, of course. In that case, good luck. The range and talent of the performers (they’re more than just piano players) is stupendous. They don’t miss a note at either of the baby grands taking center stage up front, and their comedic repertoire is

You don’t need a happy hour if you’ve already got decent prices and a good shtick. Pete’s has got both, as well as two, easily accessible bars, fully stocked with your favorite hooch and over 30 bottled beers. They’ve got a house menu of simple cocktails for every taste, and they’re just dying to put a Houston spin on the recipes. Go in on the right night and talk to the right people and they just might name a bev or shot after you. So back to our study. It turns out that our results are slightly skewed, and thus inconclusive. We were evidently holding the graph upside down. I think before we can draw any rock solid conclusions about the relation between my inebriation and ability to belt out “Piano Man,” more research is in order. Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar is the perfect place.

OCTOBER. IT’S MY FAVORITE MONTH. ASIDE FROM THE AUTUMN WEATHER, THE HOLIDAYS ARE AROUND THE CORNER AND SUDDENLY, THERE’S SO MUCH TO DO IN TOWN. IF YOU’RE THE SOCIAL CLIMBER, YOU’RE MAKING THE GALA ROUNDS; SOCIAL BUTTERFLIES ARE SCOPING OUT THE LATEST HOT SPOT TO FLAUNT THEIR GAMS; SOCIAL CHAIRS ARE THROWING PHILANTHROPIC WORTHY FUNDRAISERS; COUPLES ARE CUDDLING CLOSER AT DINNER; AND SINGLES ARE SOCIALIZING OVERTIME. IF YOU’RE ME, YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER’S BIRTHDAY, RACE FOR THE CURE, GREEK FESTIVAL AND HALLOWEEN. I’M A COSTUME-MAKING JUNKIE. IT’S PART OF THE CONTAGIOUS ELECTRICITY THAT TAKES OVER THIS MAGNETIC MONTH. THE COOLER WEATHER SETS IN AND WE GET THIS UNEXPECTED ENERGY TO MAKE EVERY NIGHT COUNT REGARDLESS OF WHAT WE ARE DOING.

THE GALLANT KNI GHT - 2511 B is son net St . 713.942.9940 w w w.thegallantk night.com The Gallant Knight is back and just in time for football season. They couldn’t have returned to the scene at a better time. This is the perfect ending to a long day of drinking and football. I found myself surrounded amid a 30-plus crowd, college kids to young 20-something-yr.-olds. So it’s a melting pot of ages basically. The band had already started up and the dance floor was bumping with wigged-out bachelorettes celebrating, day drinkers swaying to the rhythm and fresh, clean newbies making the rounds for the evening. By eleven, there was a steady stream of people making their way in to dance to the Hit Squad. And a Hit Squad they are! Playing everything from Black Eye Peas’ latest to Tina’s Proud Mary. At this point I found myself rolling as though I was Tina, being coaxed on stage by the keyboardist to dance in front of everyone. Thankfully there was still one iota of sense and I refrained. I really get into my Proud Mary. It’s a good time and I can also attribute that to my Sweet Tea vodka craze. ZOËS KI TCHEN - 4000 Was hin gt on 713.861.9637 w w w.zoes k itchen.com Oh My Gruben! You’re lost, aren’t you? I am exclaiming about none other then Zoës Gruben sandwich. I’ve always wanted to taste a Reuben sandwich but not being a fan of roast beef kind of put me in a pickle. Into my life comes Zoës with their take on the Reuben, a Gruben. Instead of using roast beef, they use grilled turkey. They keep the Swiss, add some of their delicious slaw, spicy mustard, all atop rye bread. It’s crunchy, it’s gooey, I have

no idea how healthy it may be but since it’s Zoës I don’t dwell on that too much. I was pleasantly surprised with my order choice which seems to be the norm at Zoës. CENTRAL MARKET - 3815 Westh eim er Rd. 713.386.1700 w w w.cent ralm ark et.com I call this the designer grocery store. Everything is just fresher, nicer and seems more exclusive here. With the maze-like setup winding around like a snake and short cuts placed in nooks and crannies, I can see why some stay away. A novice like me could get lost or simply not find a thing I need in here if I were to let the pressure get to me. The experts sprint around the maze as if it’s a race pushing their Eurocarts along with ease. I, of course, stare in amazement or jealousy and wonder how long it took for them to figure the place out. I want to be a Central Market connoisseur! Just perusing the maze, I got to try delicious fruit, fresh bread and, if there happens to be something I need, say a balsamic glaze for my caprese salad, Central Market foodies stalk the grounds for any questions/ suggestions. All in one late Friday the night, the grocery store that scared me was winning me over! Might I add that late Friday night was a sane time to go and miss the chaos of people that can build up on weekends. Already a huge fan of their pastry department – their petit fours are PHENOMENAL! I use them for any sort of shower I might be hosting. Every turn I took, I’d find something else that made me need to come back. Their section of candy, spices, salts, nuts, coffee, etc., is mesmerizing. I could stay in there sampling things for hours. And don’t get me started in their prepared dishes area, their packaged meals components to cook at home area or the flowers! I could ramble on! All of this discovery in the name of “designer” black garlic for Carla and Marzi! Thank you, ladies. I’m officially OBSESSED… FI T ATHLETI C - 1532 W Gray St. 713.782.9348 w w w.fitath letic.com OK, the majority of the time it seems like I’m just out stuffing my face or drinking till the sun comes up. It’s only fair that I let you know where I spend the other 50% of my time. The gym. That’s right. The old dreaded gym. I’m usually there 4 days a week sweating it out. Yes, I sweat. It’s only natural, folks. You won’t find me wearing makeup, using my phone and doing the minimum so as NOT to break a sweat. I work out hard so I can enjoy my champagne, mom’s chocolate cake, pizza, etc. And the place I choose to call home is FIT. I’m not even inside the premises and I’m already getting a workout just having to find a parking spot. Located in a shopping center, parking is abundant. Peak hours though translate to far spots which I would

imagine is the norm elsewhere. The gym stays open until 11pm so I tend to skip peak hours due to the amount of people. There is nothing like a gym full of people either getting in shape or maintaining their shape to motivate you to work out. Some of those people include pro-athletes, Rockets Power dancers, fighters – and even the trainers hit it hard. It’s give and take. After working out, you can hit the smoothie bar or pick up a prepackaged healthy meal. It’s perfect those late nights in the gym. In order for me to be able to enjoy the beauty of food, I have to – need to – work out. HEB B UNK ER HI LL MARK ET - 9710 Kat y Freew ay 713.647.5900 w w w.heb.com After a nightmarish bout of food poisoning due to sushi, I thought I had sworn off forever!

That is until I found love at first bite at my HEB sushi counter. Yes, I know it sounds crazy, weird, unfathomable, gross. But truth be told, it’s amazingly delicious. They make a tempura shrimp roll with organic brown rice! I mean really, why these options aren’t available in sushi restaurants is beyond me. It’s cooked for all you sushi virgins, so have no fear and try it! They also make a great tuna salad. It’s lightly seared Ahi tuna, served on top of greens in a mango dressing. It’s a rather large package but it would be ideal for lunch. Light, refreshing and delicious! The quality isn’t a one-time fluke either! I decided to really test my decision before letting you know about this little gem and each time I’ve gone, it’s either freshly prepared there in front of me or it’s from that day. Sushi on a budget, who doesn’t like that?

CD REVIEWS

By Lance Scott Walker

POLVO In Prism (Merge) For anyone not familiar with them, Polvo wrote brilliant, innovative records throughout the 90s and then disbanded in 1998 after a swansong (97’s Shapes) that left far too much to be desired by their fans. From the outset, it was a sound comprised of inflections of influences from the Far East and Middle East seamlessly knit into a progressive rock format (categorizing them as math rock has always sold them short). Throughout all of that, they wrote great rock songs with durable melodies that have allowed their records to hold up all this time. Flash forward to 2009, after a decade’s worth of time away and the band is back in the studio with a new drummer. I can’t believe I’m writing this, but not only did they pick up right where they left off—they actually made up for the shortcomings of Shapes and allowed themselves to be informed both by their entire prolific career and everything they’ve been soaking up over the past decade (influences undoubtedly more far-reaching even than before). The big, chunky riff-driven sound they began to tap into on their last record is still there, but they integrate it much better here. Much like on 1994’s Celebrate the New Dark Age EP (which some consider their best), they also close this one with an epic one: the 9-minute “A Link In The Chain,” which almost works like a Polvo table of contents—giving room for Ash Bowie’s complexly warm voice and their ability to shift dynamics on a needle without shifting away your attention. New drummer Brian Quast (The Cherry Valence) hammers it home by giving shape and texture to the songs that don’t exactly mirror longtime drummer Eddie Watkins’s efforts, but then… they’re a new version of an old thing, right? GET BACK GUINOZZI! Carpet Madness (FatCat) Real talk: this is not a good band! The French/British duo (+3) isn’t technically gifted, they don’t write mind-blowing pop songs and the vocals leave you wondering how the music might sound without them. Scattered, soft-handed beats almost float behind embarrassingly simple, jangly guitar parts that sound like they were recorded on a cheap guitar played out of a cheap amplifier in a cheap studio. Eglantine Gouzy’s vocals are layered in spots where she sings in two high voices that battle with each other throughout every track of French pop/Tropicalia/whatever else they throw in. But they’re totally infectious, warranting listen after listen, and it hits you in that refreshing way that leaves you questioning your own ability to discern what it is you like about pop music. Sometimes it really doesn’t matter.

RAEKWON Only Built 4 Cuban Linx PT II (EMI) Gritty, dirty, thick and stained with bloody lyrics that chip away at themes while laying out a patchwork of music that towers over other WuTang solo efforts, II has all of the congruence of a concept album and all of the continuity of a mixtape without any of the pretense or decadence of either. Part II of a classic, sure to be a classic. october 09 | www.002mag.com .81
