DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I KEEP TRYING TO JUST CHILL, BUT SOMEHOW I GET WOUND UP SO TIGHT NOT EVEN MY MASSEUSE (KIMBERLY HAMILTON, WHO IS THE BOMB; EMAIL HER: KIM.HAMILTON.LMT@EARTHLINK.NET) CAN GET THE KINKS OUT WITHOUT BEATING ME. I KID! But here we are again, another quite frankly wonderful year has gone by, full of ups and downs, goods and bads, highs and lows, and I am reminded again of how lucky I am to get to live this good life in all my capacities.

On December 21, I’ll toast the Mayans with a hot Mexican chocolate (and hope the world doesn’t end) and translate their end of the world into the beginning of a cycle where we can choose to be nice and good to one another. Speaking of being nice and good to one another, grab a tissue and read about the two Dallasites who started Heroes for Children, in this month’s nonprofit. We’ve changed the format a bit, and this month wedding fashion guru Luvi Wheelock interviews one of the co-founders behind her favorite nonprofit. If our gift guide doesn’t inspire some shopping – many vendors are offering special deals – then you are just going to have to admit there’s a little Grinch in you. The image on the cover by Tiffany Cintron won by an overwhelming amount of votes. Turn to page 42 to read about it and the other finalists. A crowd of guests showed up to our cover contest party at Archway Gallery to vote for the cover the same week we were voting for our President. Thanks to everyone who came out to the event and all of the artists who submitted original works.

EVENT PETSET WHY TO BENEFIT PETSET WHERE ZAZA HOTEL WHEN SEPTEMBER 28 This year’s Houston PetSet Fierce and Fabulous Soiree brought more than 200 festive animal lovers to the Hotel ZaZa for a wild evening in support of the organization which works to fund smaller animal welfare and rescue organizations throughout Greater Houston. Revelers were met at the door by Tucker, Liz Vittor’s Great Pyrenees, who gladly posed for photos with gala guests. A spectacular silent auction kept shoppers busy until the closing bell, and a spirited live auction with Jeff Smith on the mic raised loads of money for this all-volunteer nonprofit.

TRANSCENDING ART AT THE NEW DAVID SHELTON GALLERY

D

AVID SHELTON GALLERY’S NEW SPACE AT MAIN STREET’S ISABELLA COURT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING. “I’VE BEEN TOYING WITH THE IDEA OF RELOCATING HERE FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS BUT IT WAS KIND OF DEPENDENT ON THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY, MEANING LOCATION,” EXPLAINS SHELTON. AFTER A FEW SUCCESSFUL ENDEAVORS IN H-TOWN, INCLUDING A WILDLY POPULAR BOOTH AT THE CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR IN 2011 AND A TEMPORARY SUBLET IN ANOTHER ISABELLA COURT SPACE, SHELTON LEFT SAN ANTONIO BEHIND FOR THE ART-LOVING CROWD OF AMERICA’S COOLEST CITY.

The sleek matte black floors and requisite white walls are the perfect backdrop for this contemporary art gallery. “The work stands out,” says Shelton. It’s also a perfect match for the graphic black-and-white Spanish Colonial Revival-style building, built in 1929.

Shelton’s roster includes nationally acclaimed Alejandro Diaz, known for his cheeky neon sculptures, and Vincent Valdez. “He uses pugilists (boxers) as a metaphor for achievement and then rejection by the people who put them there,” explains Shelton about the drawings. “I love minimal and art with a purpose, but I don’t just do that.”

in New York and L.A. but ultimately returned to Texas. His eye for talent is more than perfunctory. He studied art from a young age and made it the subject of his undergrad in college. “That was really good background training to discern qualities about art,” explains Shelton. He prides himself on assembling cohesive programs. “A challenge I always pose to myself is, ‘How can you put together seemingly disparate things – different types of work – and make them work well to support one another?’”

I THINK ART SERVES WELL WHEN IT TRANSCENDS SOME POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND GENDER ISSUES WITHOUT OVERTLY SCREAMING IT

The common thread among Shelton’s picks is intention. “I think art serves well when it transcends some political, social and gender issues without overtly screaming it,” he says. San Antonio-based Joey Fauerso exemplifies this with her paintOn view through December 31 is Jonathan Faber, whose work Shelton describes ings whose underlying themes include voyeurism. “There are not a as “abstracted” work. Objects are represented and then abstracted lot of female artists who paint nude men,” he says. through various layers of paint. In January, watch for assistant David Shelton Gallery gallery director Shane Tolbert’s East Coast/West Coast curated 3909 Main Street Born in Houston but raised in San Antonio, Shelton has had stints exhibit. 713.787.0260

nonprofit Interview by Luvi Wheelock, Photography by Sofia van der Dys

Luvi Wheelock & Larissa Linton

HEROES for CHILDREN

C

ASA DE NOVIA AND ATRIUM BOUTIQUE OWNER LUVI WHEELOCK SITS DOWN FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH HEROES FOR CHILDREN CO-FOUNDER/DONOR RELATIONS DIRECTOR LARISSA LINTON. WHEELOCK HAS LONG BEEN A SUPPORTER OF THIS NONPROFIT THAT PROVIDES FINANCIAL AND SOCIAL ASSISTANCE TO FAMILIES WITHIN THE STATE OF TEXAS WITH CHILDREN BATTLING CANCER.

LUVI WHEELOCK How did you get involved with Heroes for Children? LARISSA LINTON I’m one of the co-founders. Jenny Scott and myself founded the organization in 2004, after the loss of both of our daughters to leukemia. Jenny’s daughter Allie was just 9 months old when she passed away. And my daughter Taylor was just 4 years old. And through that process we really realized the need for an organization like Heroes for Children to support the community.

LW Were you friends before? LL We were not. Jenny had a blog that she kept and I followed Allie’s story, but I knew from my personal experience from Taylor that as I was going through that journey I didn’t want to talk to a mom who had lost a child. I wanted to hear the happy endings. I had emailed her at one point but I knew not to be pushy and just let her know that I was thinking about her and praying for Allie. Our paths actually crossed – we were both volunteering at the Leukemia Society soon after Allie had passed away and we became fast friends. Obviously we had a horrible common denominator. I had already started a nonprofit called Taylor’s Angels in 2002. It was very grassroots; I was doing it out of my home with the help of friends and

20. december 12 | www.002mag.com

family. We already had a fundraiser in place, a golf tournament and a 5K and we had our 501(c)3 status. After Allie’s death, all of these people that had followed Jenny’s blog wanted to get involved and make a difference. Jenny came to me one day and said, “I’ve got all these people that are involved and want to do something to make a difference. I want to do something to keep Allie’s memory alive and I so admire what you’ve done with Taylor’s Angels, but I don’t want to step on your toes. What do you suggest?” I went home and thought about it, and I realized that she really had what we needed which was people that were passionate about helping children with cancer. And in order for us to continue to grow we really needed to get more people involved. It was kind of the perfect fit. So we merged our efforts and changed the name to Heroes for Children and the rest is history. LW What is the best part about your job? LL The phone calls and letters we receive from the children we help and their parents. And the relief that they experience even if it’s for a brief amount of time.

December 12 Issue_002houston 11/19/12 11:36 AM Page 21

IT’S BEEN A REAL HEALING PROCESS TO ME TO HELP THESE FAMILIES AND PROVIDE THAT MUCH NEEDED ASSISTANCE AND RELIEF TO THEM.

Whether it’s helping them get through the month, or with the utilities, or helping with transportation costs for those who live far from the hospital or paying for hotels and the cost of gas. It’s just that welcome sigh of relief and “thank you.” A lot of things that most of us take for granted. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, mom or dad has to quit work entirely or take an extended time off work and that – with the co-pays, prescriptions, travel expenses, even parking fees at the hospital – it all adds up pretty quickly and takes a financial strain on the family. LW What does the organization need most during the holiday season? LL We have a program called Holiday Heroes and we adopt families who have a child with cancer. The social workers submit the families to us because they really know firsthand and see the needs of the families and who has the most need. The great thing about Holiday Heroes is we adopt not just the child, but also all of the children in that family. We provide them with a great holiday experience. We also give the parents a gift card so they can go out and purchase something on their own for the kids because a lot of these families, they just don’t have the means to do that during the holidays. We have lots of opportunities to get involved, whether it’s shopping for the kids, making a donation or volunteering. LW What’s the most surprising thing you’ve experienced? LL Initially I was really surprised at the generosity of the community and how much they embraced this cause. We started in Dallas and we had a lady call our office who had followed Allie’s story and she wanted to host a luncheon in her home. Not a fundraiser or anything. She just wanted Jenny and I to come to the event and speak. She had about 100 ladies come and out of that grew our Heroes and Handbags event, which is now our largest fundraiser and we do it both in Dallas and Houston. LW Does the organization plan to branch out into any other cities other than just Dallas and Houston? LL Yes, we actually have our Hold ’Em event in Austin and this will be our third year to do that. And we just had an event at the Elaine Turner store in San Antonio trying to generate some interest. We are helping families all over Texas and the plan now is really to go into Austin and San Antonio and generate fund raising from those cities and let the community know we are supporting the families there.

LW Have you always been a philanthropist? LL I have, but I don’t think I ever imagined my life would take this turn and this route. I’ve always enjoyed helping people. I remember as a kid when it was Labor Day weekend and the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon was on, I would go all over the neighborhood and collect money and make my dad drive me up to the mall to drop it off. So I think from a young age, I’ve had that drive in me. And God just had a plan that unfortunately involved losing a child. It’s been a real healing process to me to help these families and provide that much needed assistance and relief to them. LW What are the different ways that we can get involved here in Houston to help Heroes for Children? LL We have a number of events: our Heroes for Handbags event is in April and our Texas Hold ’Em event, which is in October, yearly. We have a women’s auxiliary group called HFC Friends, which is the volunteer arm of the organization. They help out with the Holiday Heroes shopping and Heroes’ Milestones which is another one of our social assistance programs. Heroes Milestones celebrates a milestone event in a child’s life with cancer whether it’s simply a birthday party or a prom or a graduation ceremony for a child that’s too sick to attend, or even a quinceañera. HFC Friends also helps with the Valentine’s Dinner that we do every year in February, which is a great event for the parents. A lot of times mom and dad aren’t focusing on their relationships. The divorce rate is really high among families who have a child with cancer and what we do is have a sit-down dinner where mom and dad get to have a quiet dinner at a table set for two. We have free childcare provided by professional nannies in the room next door. The kids come with their parents and they are in the room next door. The kids have arts and crafts and entertainment and are very well cared for while mom and dad get to sit down and have a very much needed quiet dinner for two.

FOR A BOX OFFICE BLAST,

SIMPLY PUT A

“RUSH” ON IT! by Susan M. Bynam

HEY, HOUSTON! BE CERTAIN TO PLAN A DATE AT THE MOVIES THIS HOLIDAY TO EXPLORE OLD SCHOOL/NEW SCHOOL PARENTING VALUES AS A SET OF GRANDPARENTS TAKE THE DRIVER’S SEAT IN OVERSEEING THREE GRANDKIDS WHEN THEIR PARENTS LEAVE TOWN FOR WORK IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX ANTICIPATED BLOCKBUSTER COMEDY, PARENTAL GUIDANCE, STARRING FAMED ACTORS BILLY CRYSTAL, BETTE MIDLER AND MARISA TOMEI – SLATED FOR RELEASE ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

IT’S

It’s not often that Houston can claim bragging rights for show biz beginnings, so as the city of Joshua Rush’s birth and acting beginnings, we consider it a privilege to highlight his Houston roots (Rush also has family in Houston, including his paternal grandmother, aunts and uncles) and bolster his acting merits not solely throughout this holiday season, but in the years to follow. Born December 14, 2001, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, the handsome, dark-haired, brown-eyed, highly astute soon-to-be-11-year-old boywonder lived with his family near River Oaks and later in Timbergrove; he attended the Awty International School and later River Oaks Elementary prior to his transition to Los Angeles to advance his acting career. As the only child of a corporate documentary producer and a nationally recognized sports and sponsorship branding/marketing strategist (Mom and Dad, respectively), Rush displayed sharp acuity and a love for being in front of the camera at a very young age, often appearing in corporate documentaries during

infancy. Fascinated with high-end vehicles (his favorite brands: Bugatti and Lamborghini), Rush revealed this passion and his acuity at the tender age of 2, appearing on CBS/Channel 11 in a special feature showcasing his ability to identify all makes and models of cars – imagine that at 2! Rush is now a proud collector of 300+ Hot Wheels® and with his comprehensive library of books on cars, he can just about tell you everything known to man about them. On the brink of turning 11, Rush is not only fluent in Spanish, but has developed a mad love for Apple® products – so much that not only does he have a picture of Steve Jobs on his bedroom wall, he dressed as an Apple Genius this past Halloween (even had the nametag) and is now an investor in Apple stock! With a personal Mac® laptop and iPad® at his disposal and frequent drop-ins at Apple Stores to converse with the Genius on hand, it’s safe to say that if Rush’s acting career soars downhill, he’s got a future with Apple one day. Rush spares no kudos to his first acting coach in Houston, Mari Ferguson, who after working with him starting at 4½ years old for 18 months and watching him land roles (i.e., the Baby Jamz video with recording artist Solange Knowles and TV

commercials for Space Center Houston and Safeco Insurance), encouraged his parents to seek out an agent and manager in L.A. Rush’s parents moved forward with his transition to L.A., and the rest, as they say, is history. His first big gig in L.A. was a co-star role on Private Practice. Rush has since costarred in such hit shows as Heroes, Medium, Criminal Minds, CSI:NY and Chuck, and has been featured in a host of commercials and films including Megamind, Unstoppable and Diary of a Wimpy Kid – to name a few. Parental Guidance opens Rush realizes that an acting career is not for the faint at heart and in theaters on embraces each role as a learning experience, while maintaining life balChristmas Day 2012. ance. Per Rush, “My life is pretty normal. I go to school, learn and have Check local listings for fun – the only difference being some afternoons when I leave school, I a theater near have auditions. While on set, I receive 3 hours of mandatory instruction and you. coursework; I have to study and complete it – no exceptions. Acting offers great learning experiences. My favorite role so far is Parental Guidance; it was the chance of a lifetime to work with big names like Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei and really learn from each of them. To be in this business, you simply have to have tough skin. Another actor could very well have an upper edge, so you have to continue to hone your craft. If you’re serious about pursuing an acting career, secure a good acting coach and an agent, work hard and audition for parts as much as possible. You’ve got to put the hard work in, if you want positive results.”

ART FILMS ARE GOOD FOR THE SOUL…TAKE A FRIEND TO ONE. FROM CHAOS TO FORGIVENESS

Here comes December! The Landmark River Oaks Theatre (http://tinyurl.com/csslm3r) celebrates the ho-lee-daze with the love story of Rust and Bone on 12/21. This month’s “Midnight Madness” series features Jurassic Park (11/30 and 12/1); Birdemic: Shock & Terror (12/7); Rocky Horror Picture Show with live shadow cast; The Royal Mystic Order of Chaos (12/8); and Django (12/28 and 12/29). · The Houston Museum of Natural Science (www.hmns.org) has three IMAX® films on their screen: Disneynature Chimpanzee; Meerkats 3D; and Flight of the Butterflies 3D (pictured), is a detective story in which scientist Dr. Fred Urquhart uncovers the mystery of the migration that butterflies make each year as they travel throughout Canada and Mexico and then back home again. · Speaking of Canada, I recently stumbled across a Facebook page for a film-in-progress that I wanted to let you know about: Project Forgive (www.facebook.com/ProjectForgive.com). For me, December is a time to clear things out, de-clutter and to get ready for another year, so this film inspired in me a need to ask myself who I need to forgive, which is part of my personal re-booting. Check it out, like their page and add a story – I’ll bet you’ll be inspired to get out your list and start your own forgiveness party.

WARS AND MORE The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (www.mfah.org) continues their “Wars on Film” series created to complement the MFAH exhibition “War/Photography: Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath.” Grand Illusion/Le Grande Illusion (12/1, 7pm and 12/2, 5pm) by Jean Renoir – the son of famed Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir – is the story of the connection between an aristocrat and a mechanic, both soldiers trapped in a German POW camp. The series wraps up with a film commissioned by the Algerian government, The Battle of Algiers/La Battaglia di Algeri (12/7, 6pm and 12/9, 5pm) and Went the Day Well? (12/14, 7:30pm and 12/16, 5pm). “Considering the Quay Brothers” brings us Institute Benjamenta (pictured, 12/6, 7pm); The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes (12/8, 4pm and 12/6, 7pm); and Through the Weeping Glass and other shorts (12/9, 1pm). The twin Quay Brothers are two of the world’s most original filmmakers – their animations shine with a passion for detail and a breathtaking command of color and texture. This series is a complement to the exhibition “Quay Brothers: On Deciphering the Pharmacist’s Prescription for Lip-Reading,” which is on view at The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

ANTI-CLAUSES UNITE The Aurora Picture Show (www.aurorapictureshow.org) is bringing back the always cool Skip Elsheimer for “Krampus Night with the A/V Geeks” (12/8, 7pm) which is not only a screening of Christmas-themed 16mm films but also the APS annual holiday party and raffle. An antiClaus (Krampus) will be in attendance and the audience is encouraged to wear their favorite Christmas attire to win him over (maybe he likes those sweaters with little hanging ornaments on them?!). · 14 Pews (www.14pews.org) has a very full slate of films this month: first up is A Separation (12/7, 12/10 and 12/11 at 7pm, and 12/9, 4pm); then there is a special event with UH Prof and the creator and voice of “The Engines of Our Ingenuity,” John Lienhard, who will discuss the movie The Burmese Harp (12/9), after which will be a screening of the film. Also on at 14 Pews this month: Eating Alabama (12/14, 7pm); Somewhere Between (12/16, 4pm and 12/17, 7pm); Detropia (12/18 and 12/19, 7pm); and Monsieur Lazhar (12/21, 7pm and 12/23, 4pm). And just in time for Christmas, the highly anticipated Quentin Tarantino film, Django Unchained (pictured), opens 12/25 with a bang – it stars Jamie Foxx as a slave in the South whose unusual partnership with a German bounty hunter leads him to freedom. Happy holidays – and whatever you are celebrating, make it a good one!

Millette and Haag Sherman Photography by Michelle Watson

The Childrens Museum of Houston hit the jackpot, raising close to six figures from underwriting, big board and live auction. The glitz and glam of the Entertainment Capital of the World turned The Corinthian into an exciting Strip filled with “what happens in Vegas” adventures. More than 500 guests took a roulette spin into Darryl & Co.’s vision of Vegas-style glamour complete with appearances by stunning Vegas showgirls, a casino and a rocking performance from the King of Rock n’ Roll himself, Elvis. Partygoers were unable to keep a poker face when they noshed on Jackson & Company’s multi-course feast of exquisite delicacies, worthy of any five-star Vegas restaurant, and a Luxor Hotelinspired pyramid cake for dessert. Attendees danced the night away with music from Skyrocket.

TIPS& TRICKS iPhone® | iPad® by Vladimir Ambia

1

iPhone®/iPad® TIPS: Drive safely: Use Siri to update your Facebook or Twitter posts.

How does Siri learn about my key relationships?

2

Siri helps you by learning about the key people in your life. The first time you ask Siri to call your sister, it will ask you who your sister is. That information is stored in Contacts along with other relationship information like “mom,” “husband” and “grandma.”

3

DON’T FORGET TO ALSO LOCK SIRI WHEN YOU LOCK YOUR PHONE.

1

Mac® TIPS:

Screen Shots tips: • Shift+command+3 = entire desktop screen • Shift+command+4 = selective screen capture (the crosshair icon appears) • Shift+command+4, then hit space bar = a cute little camera icon appears. • Shift+command+control+3 = copies the entire desktop to your Clipboard, in order to Paste into a document. ALL OF THESE FILES WILL BE PLACED ON YOUR DESKTOP.

LOVE

By Carla Valencia de Martinez Photography by Gabriella Nissen

There’s something nostalgic about men’s fragrances like Bvlgari’s Pour Homme, Hermes classic Eau d’Orange Vert or Guerlain’s Vetiver. All the important men in my life – from my father to my grandfathers to my husband – have all had these particular smells that I remember so well and remind me of being loved. ROBYN AROUTY

I wanted to create an eye-catching image that would surely make people grab a copy or two off the stands. So, in keeping with 002’s slick mantra, here is the concept: Hip – It represents Houston’s downtown revitalization & new birth of family-friendly living. It’s hopeful. Hip. Fun. Meaningful. Artistic. ...for any age. Current – December Issue! Red balloons for a festive holiday but big Texas style. And, probably the most sought after holiday gift this season: the iPhone® 5, to capture it all. I am a pop culture girl, but a vintage lover at heart, which I think plays out in the image. Cool – I wanted to “create” an image, one that couldn’t possibly be taken simply with a camera. They are floating on a swing above downtown Houston in a turquoise sky because it’s cool and anyone would wish they could do it too. A cool family, with distinct individuality also. Having a sense of humor and not taking life so seriously is always very cool.

DEREK MAYO

Chris Kersten collaboration HIGH DRAWMA! For the Holidays Cartoon characters from Mayo’s cartoons were used as models. The entire work is 3-dimensional, the paper puppets have moveable joints and real jewelry. The car, the desert set piece and the lead’s dress were all made from paper and material. The puppet even has extended eyelashes. “For the sky backdrop, I drew more desert and buildings; Chris added snowflakes, highlights to the skin, added buildings and more desert to the background for depth. I wanted to capture Texas with the desert and buildings telling the story of a happy couple with the mistletoe in the back while the lover scorned stands fashionably in the front representing 002houston magazine always glossy, chic and high fashion, representing Houston to the fullest.”

GABRIEL GAMIO

Gabriel Gamio is a designer at IDEA (www.idea.com). He is a “Chilango” imported from Mexico City and has been living in Houston for the past 8 years. The concept of his cover design is to show what Houston is made of – the history, architecture, how fun it can be and that there is always something to do. “It is not a “typical” Texan city; it’s a young city that is still growing. And I want to illustrate the city in a fun and easy way to understand. And the best way I think is with an illustration, which is one of my favorite design techniques. I would like to take it further having the user scan the QR code taking the user to an interactive mobile version of the illustration to see it more in detail and have the information of each building. Of course there are a lot of important buildings missing, so I tried to have the most iconic city buildings and monuments.”

EMILIA ROMAGNA italy ferrari museum

IF YOU’VE HEARD OF BOLOGNESE SAUCE, DUCATI MOTORCYCLES, PARMESAN CHEESE AND FERRARI CARS, YOU’VE HEARD OF EMILIA-ROMAGNA. THOUGH THIS LOVELY REGION OF NORTHERN ITALY MAY NOT BE AS NAME-CHECKED AS NEIGHBORING AREAS LIKE VENETO AND TUSCANY, EMILIA-ROMAGNA IS THE BIRTHPLACE OF MANY ICONIC ITALIAN EXPORTS, FROM TORTELLINI (MADE IN BOLOGNA) AND BALSAMIC VINEGAR (THE BEST QUALITY COMES FROM MODENA), TO FILMMAKERS LIKE FELLINI AND ANTONIONI, TO FAST RIDES FROM DUCATI, LAMBORGHINI AND FERRARI (ALL BASED IN THE MOTORVALLEY). IT’S ALSO HOME TO ONE OF THE OLDEST UNIVERSITIES IN THE WORLD, SCENIC RENAISSANCE TOWNS AND LIVELY RETREATS ALONG THE ADRIATIC COAST. Below is a taste of just some of the things travelers can experience in the region. Through Italy Vacations (www.ItalyVacations.com), you can create your own custom itinerary based on your dates and interests, or sign up for a small group journey (typically about 20 guests). Their six-night Emilia-Romagna package includes fourstar hotel accommodations, transfers, guided city tours, prosciutto and Parmesan tastings, private tours of the car factories, dinners, a painting class and more, starting at $2,799 per person, not including airfare.

A BOLOGNESE BASE The best base for exploring the region is Bologna, the vibrant capital of EmiliaRomagna. Both classic and cosmopolitan, with a rich tradition of art, music, academics and cuisine, Bologna is home to a university dating back to 1088, as well as a beautifully preserved historic city center known for its porticoed passageways. Learn about the city’s past at the recently opened Museum of the History of Bologna, set in a stunning palazzo, then wander the arch-topped sidewalks and cobblestoned alleys to check out the cafes, designer boutiques and artisan instrument workshops.

A short walk from the grand Piazza del Nettuno, with its ornate Neptune fountain, the Quadrilatero neighborhood is brimming with specialty food shops and markets. Lunch at La Baita, a historic deli/restaurant famous for its incredible cheese selection, then pop into nearby stalls to pick up fresh-made tortelli and tagliolini, local wines and mortadella cold cuts; if you’re lucky, you can even watch traditional Bolognese sauce being made. For dinner, book a table at Cantina Bentivoglio (www.cantinabentivoglio.it), a traditional osteria featuring live music. -Check-in: Bologna Art Hotels offers six hotels in the city, in various locations and price ranges. We love the Hotel Corona D’Oro for its central location, classic charm and homemade buffet breakfast. www.bolognaarthotels.it

HOME COOKING, TWO WAYS With its famous cheeses, wines, specialty meats and dizzying array of fresh and stuffed pastas, Emilia-Romagna is one of Italy’s top culinary destinations. Get a taste of authentic regional delicacies through the Home Food program (www.homefood.it) which allows you to dine in a private home; you’ll be hosted by

an approved Cesarina (home cook) and treated to a multi-course meal of classic seasonal dishes, accompanied by local vintages and good conversation with both your host family and other travelers. Once inspired, head to the Casa Artusi culinary center in Forlimpopoli (about a 45-minute drive from Bologna), where you can learn about the history of Italian regional cuisine, take a cooking class taught by local ladies and enjoy an incredible meal. www.casartusi.it.

DAY TRIPS From Bologna it’s an easy day trip to some of Italy’s best-preserved historic towns. In mysterious Ravenna, check out the stunning Byzantine mosaics and tangled old town center, then grab a bite at Osteria del Tempo Perso (www.osteriadeltempoperso.it), with its movie- and music-inspired décor and gourmet menu full of seasonal ingredients like truffles. In June and July, Ravenna hosts a famous music festival featuring everything from opera and classical to electronica. Modena features a UNESCO World Heritage town center along with its signature traditional balsamic vinegar houses; at Acetaia di Giorgio (www.acetaiadigiorgio.it), you can learn about the ancient art of balsamic making, then taste a variety of styles of the “liquid gold.” Finally, in Ferrara, make like a local and grab a bike (you can rent them in the town center) to peddle atop the ancient city walls, through the parks and in the historic old town, before settling in at Cusina e Butega for an amazing meal of specialties like pumpkin risotto, cappelletti pasta ravenna bikes in broth, Adriatic fish and over 32 types of cold cuts and 24 types of regional cheeses (www.cusinaebutega.com).

GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING… Within 30 minutes of Bologna sits Motorvalley, home to the HQs of Ducati, Lamborghini and Ferrari. Through tour companies like Italy Vacations, guests can tour these temples of luxury auto production, and even organize car test drives through the Emilia-Romagna countryside. At Ducati, wander the well-done museum, which details the history of the motorcycle brand and houses dozens of classic models, then visit the production line before grabbing an espresso (and Ducati souvenir) in the staff canteen. At Lamborghini you can see the cars in various stages of production, shop the exclusive brand store and visit a two-floor gallery filled with iconic models – including some rare one-offs. Just opened this year, the Museum Casa Natale Enzo Ferrari (www.museocasaenzoferrari.it) includes a museum in the house where Enzo Ferrari was born, plus a stunning, sun-lit galley lined with historic Ferraris, including the famous convertibles that have come to represent la dolce vita. bologna food market december 12 | www.002mag.com .49

Tely HD

My family has been using video calling services regularly now that our oldest child is away in college. Instead of us huddling around a computer trying to get in camera view we have been sitting on our living room couch using telyHD to chat with him. telyHD is an easy-to-use, Skype-compatible, HDTV video calling box. You simply attach it to your HDTV in a matter of minutes and start making free Skype video calls to anyone, anywhere in the world. No computers are required, and you’re no longer limited to the small screen of your laptop. Some useful features include full Web browsing and compatibility with Apple’s AirPlay® so people can share photos effortlessly from their iPhones® or iPads® while on the call. This is an easy way to stay in touch, since chances are many of you will be away from loved ones during the holidays. $249

G-GRIP Bluetooth® Speaker I spend a lot of time outdoors and have been enjoying music – and a certain radio show – using a rugged Bluetooth speaker. If you hike, bike or camp you should look into getting this gadget from G-GRIP. It is very portable and built to last. The reinforced housing has withstood drops of over 8 feet and a crush force of over 1,300 pounds in lab tests – though I have yet to test that myself. But the sound is great and impressive from such a small device. It lasts up to 8 hours on a single charge, and you can juice it up over USB when required. Just in case you do not own a Bluetooth device, the G-GRIP Bluetooth speaker works with other audio playback devices over a 3.5mm audio cable. $69.99

Key Ingredient Recipe Reader I’m not a big cook but the Recipe Reader from Key Ingredient may turn me into a semi-Iron Chef. This WiFienabled digital recipe reader is a great device to collect, share and access your favorite recipes. And it’s built to withstand the rigors of the kitchen. The touchscreen device makes it a snap to access your favorite recipes while cooking. The rugged design means users don’t have to worry about splashes and accidents. The Recipe Reader stores up to 2,500 recipes on the device and comes pre-loaded with the Key Ingredient recipe collection and sharing software for cloud-based instant access to more than a million recipes. Convenient cooking tools such as multiple timers, a conversion calculator and a substitution dictionary are also included. www.keyingredient.com/reader

I

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING, LIKE HOUSTON NEEDS ANOTHER TEX-MEX RESTAURANT. BUT THIS IS NOT TEX-MEX. THIS IS SALVATEX. WHERE SALVADORIAN CUISINE MEETS TEXAS INFLUENCE.

There is no denying there are Tex-Mex components to the menu. They are prevalent. Should you do a little more indepth looking you will find that the menu also has Salvadorian favorites plus a SalvaTex section as well.

The salsa is a mild spice, and I, for one, enjoy being served a bean dip. It’s not the thick consistency of refried beans but lighter. It’s perfect to dip without breaking your chip.

We can’t go any further though without discussing the expansive space. The bar alone not only seats a great amount but also includes banquette tables that can seat up to four.

One house frozen margarita coming up! A thick, frosty glass with a tasty rita is what I got. I was scared it would be stiff – and lunch is no time for that – but surprisingly it was just the right amount of lime and tequila where neither was the star. It was a little too easy to take down, which is just how I like my margarita.

Once you pass through the bar you are awed by this palatial dining room that could easily be a grand ballroom, with massive chandeliers sparkling with lights and ceiling draping. As if this room isn’t enough space, along the perimeter is another area with more tables. We tucked into a banquette along the windows in the bar for our lunch. Just in case you need further visual stimulation, there are three conveniently placed TVs in the bar. The space is so large they are hardly noticeable or jarring, for that matter. Right away we were served chips, salsa and a bean dip.

For lunch I had to order their specialty, Salvadorian combo plate, Gloria’s Super Special. You get one chicken tamale, one pupusa, yucca, plantain, refried black beans and black beans and rice. This is a great sample dish to get a little bit of Salvadorian classics. Contrary to what you might think, their tamale differs from the Mexican version. They wrap their tamale in banana leaf for a tender bite with chicken in a red sauce. Little to no spice is in the sauce. The pupusa is another delight. Think a quesadilla but no openings. It looks like

just a pancake of dough but once you take a bite you get a surprise center of cheese. You can also get it filled with pork or both. You can top it with the refried black beans or a lettuce mix that come on the plate as well. The yucca is crispy on the outside with a tender center that is very reminiscient of a French fry in not only in texture but also flavor. I like to take pieces of the sweet plantain and eat it with the black beans and rice for a sweet and savory mix. We also go their bean and cheese nachos. They were accommodating when we asked if we could top them with spinach and avocado. This combo was amazing visually with the bright green, and taste-wise, it added just another dimension to a classic vegetarian nacho. We highly recommend it. Plus, you’re eating your greens! Next time you want a margarita, think outside of the box and get your fix at Gloria’s. Not only will you get your margarita fix but you will also expand your culinary horizons with their blend of SalvaTex.

chef kisha lagrande armstead RESTAURANT THE POPCORN BAR [ POPCORN, SNACKS, GIFTS ] 3829 SOUTHWEST FREEWAY, HOUSTON, TX 77027 | 713.621.7677 WWW.POPCORN-BAR.COM

THE POPCORN BAR IS A FAMILY-OWNED AND -OPERATED BUSINESS CONTINUOUSLY POPPING SMALL BATCHES OF THAT GOLDEN KERNEL DAY IN AND DAY OUT. OWNER AND CHIEF POPPER KISHA SHARES A LITTLE INSIGHT INTO THE MAKING OF A POPPER. Favorite late night spot for a bite? Fish City Grill. Their fish tacos are really good. Best breakfast? I like breakfast food best at night. Best brunch? The Breakfast Klub. I love their chicken and waffles. What’s your pet peeve? Letting fresh produce go to waste. Fresh fruits and veggies are an important part of our diet and their life span is limited. It’s such a shame to let them spoil. Favorite affordable wine? Moscato. Quite frankly, any brand will do. We have a cocktailflavored popcorn line. We have a Merlot, and I’m working on a Moscato.

Do you anticipate publishing a cookbook? All things are possible. I welcome all good things that come. What is your comfort food? Fish and grits. My grandmother use to make this dish often while growing up. Whenever I eat this dish or see it on a menu I think of home.

Favorite place for dessert? Sitting on the porch or patio on a nice summer evening. (I’m a country gal.) Who are your favorite chef, restaurant and dish? Rachael Ray doesn’t consider herself a chef, but I really like her. She makes dinners that you don’t have to slave over all day. Simple and delicious. Is there a food you won’t eat? I am very open to food. There is nothing I won’t try at least once.

54. december 12 | www.002mag.com

Do you use a recipe or wing it? I use recipes, but end up cooking to taste and smell. That’s my way of putting a little ‘soul’ in my food. What do you see as the next food trend? Popcorn, of course. But I’m banking it will be around for a while. It’s a great snack loved by all and the variety of flavors and seasonings are endless.

December 12 Issue_002houston 11/18/12 10:34 AM Page 55

Popcorn At home, what do you keep on hand to serve drop-in guests? Moscato. And for the non-drinkers, Gatorade® or water.

What would people be surprised to find in your home refrigerator? I don’t keep much of anything in my fridge. I would probably get better use out of it if I used it for storage or something. What magazine cover, other than 002’s, would you like to be featured on? Any health/fitness magazine. Favorite sandwich? BLT with avocado. (However, my first love is grilled PB&J and banana.) Favorite ice cream mix-in/ topping? Warm peach cobbler with extra crust. Favorite picnic spot? Niagara Falls.

FAVORITE SPOT TO EXERCISE/RUN cosmic crossfit, pearland, texas. I currently have a love-hate relationship with crossfit.

THE GOLDEN GRILL Twitter: @goldengrillhtx | www.facebook.com/TheGoldenGrill CUISINE GOURMET GRILLED CHEESE AFTER HEARING NUMEROUS COLLEAGUES MENTION THE AMAZING GRILLED CHEESE EXPERIENCES THEY HAD, I WAS READY TO BE BLOWN AWAY. And this golden bus does not disappoint. The happy truck is wrapped in golden rays, with golden lettering shining like a beacon of the warm gold delis’more grilled sandwich ciousness they prepare inside. You can order a classic grilled cheese or fancy it up. We chose the fancy route. Their Market grilled cheese has goat cheese, local tomatoes, Arugula and a fried egg sandwiched between two golden whole wheat bread slices. We like to add a little avocado to the mix. This will make you wonder why your mother sold you short on the ingredients when you were young. White bread with American slices?! Psssh! Those days are over. How they manage to make the bread toasted so perfectly and not turn the tomato and avocado into mush, wilt the arugula plus burst that fried egg and melt the cheese so perfectly, is beyond me. There’s a science to it and they’ve got it down! For dessert, because they offer it, we got the s’more grilled sammy. In between two slices of challah bread is a heap of Nutella®, marshmallow and graham cracker crumbles. I will never make a s’more so long as this truck is in circulation. There is no point. They take a s’more and then add delicious bread and butter?! It doesn’t get any better. If you happen to see this golden truck serving up in your vicinity do yourself a favor and get reacquainted with an old comfort classic. NOTE: They accept credit cards. You have NO excuse.

CLEVERLY TUCKED ONTO THE THIRD FLOOR IN THE MEN’S DEPARTMENT IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND THIS LITTLE CAFÉ. I say cleverly because if there is any place you want to escape from ladies gone holiday shopping wild, it is here. They not only serve coffee but also are a bar. So if you need to escape the madness and get a beverage to unwind, this is the ideal spot. Its golden warm glow alone is enough to make you relax. This is where I found myself after an early excursion to the Galleria, one week before Thanksgiving, with Christmas shopping deadline looming in the back of my mind. I ordered a latte which came nice and strong. Exactly what I need to keep my focus in the Mecca of sensory overload. To eat I had their creamy lobster bisque. I suggest ordering a cup. The decadence and richness of the soup might knock you off track, so you are warned. BUT it should definitely be on your list to try. It’s cashmere for the mouth. In order to balance that richness I kept it simple with their goat cheese salad. A medallion of goat cheese is rolled in toasted almonds, served on greens in a sundried tomato vinaigrette with shaved apples. The goat cheese with the vinaigrette plus apples makes for a clean, crisp salad with an anything but bland flavor macarons profile. I could not leave without trying the gorgeous colorful macarons. They look inviting as is behind the glass counter. The freshness is unparalleled. The subtle crunch and delicate fluff cream of each macaron is full of flavor. It is rare to find macarons that taste as they should. Even the vanilla tasted of lush vanilla bean. Look for the seasonal pumpkin spice; it’s holiday joy in a bite-size package. They would even make a wonderful holiday present. Looking for a bite to eat or just to escape the grind, walk over to SAKS, go up three floors and tuck yourself in at 12. You won’t be sorry.

Tucked in the Greater Heights, this hole in the wall is more than it appears to be. At first glance, you wouldn’t imagine the great things that could come out of this neon green and red dive. BUT PREPARE TO BE ASTOUNDED BY NOT ONLY THE FARE BUT ALSO THE GENEROUS SERVICE. The moment you walk in, you are in the dining room. No bar, no waiting area. The space is small (about 10 to 12 tables total) and simply decorated. But you didn’t stop to eat here for the exterior or even the interior. The magic happens in the kitchen. We started with their garlic bread and meatballs. Full disclosure: We went with the meatballs fully knowing we would be eating pasta so we at least got to try a meat. If they are any indication of what the entrées are like, we are sold. Four tender meatballs are served dressed in marinara sauce and sprinkled with fresh basil chiffon. The spices are the perfect subtle balance in the meat, they are fall apart tender and the marinara is classic, not too sweet and savory. For our entrée we had to try the Calle 25 and the Farfalle al la Cilantro. If you haven’t noticed, Bellissimo serves Italian cuisine with Mexican touches in some (not all) of their fare. Sounds unthinkable but here, they’ve mastered it. The Calle 25 has jalapeno fettuccini with smoked sausage, sundried tomatoes, chicken and shrimp all in a creamy Alfredo. There is a noticeable kick due to the jalapeno fettuccini that marries well with the creamy Alfredo and adds depth to the layer of flavors. We loved it. The Farfalle a la cilantro has bow tie pasta with chicken and shrimp in a Cilantro pesto. I’m a huge fan of cilantro; if you’re not, don’t even bother ordering it because this isn’t the kind of dish you can pick it out of. The essential star in the entire dish is crisp cilantro. It makes for a bright pasta not only in color but also in flavor. This is a meal you will not forget for its interesting combinations. At the time they are BYOB, so get in while you can for not only unforgettable Italian dining but also a wine deal you can’t beat.

Alex Rosa

Over 75,000 music fanatics (including 002 art director, Alex Rosa) per day attended the famous festival. Two sunny day’s with one of torrential rainfall, of pure music indulgence, with live acts like Two Door Cinema Club, Alabama Shakes, The Shins and the hypnotic dance beats of Bassnectar, M83 and AVICII. Different strokes for different folks, and diversity was fully represented. The lineup lived up to its expectations. The almost fairy-looking Florence took the stage with impeccable dominance and vocal power, promising attendees eternal rituals of love and peace on their last stop of their world tour. Flo even pulled up a glitterfied fan onto the stage, touching his face she said, “It’s not a festival until you spread strangers’ glitter onto your own face.” True that! The Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage on the third day, bringing to Austin their California vibe. The rockers ended the festivities in grand style, mixing a variety of hits from their extended catalog. Red Hot Chili Peppers

GREENLIVING By Amanda DeMers

by NEW LIVING

HOUSTON NEEDS TO MAKE MORE INVESTMENTS FOR THE NEXT ECONOMY the recent Beaming Bioneers Houston Conference, hosted by the Blackwood Educational Land Institute, the consensus among a panel of sustainability experts was unanimous – Houston must invest more into its future economy, including alternative energy. According to the Houston Chronicle, “Houston’s reputation as the energy capital of the world is not as durable as it seems, despite unparalleled oil and gas expertise and decades worth of shale drilling yet to be completed, panelists said at a Houston conference.”

AT

“If we had not had this advent of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, the domestic oil and gas industry would be in the utter toilet and, by the way, our economy would have been in a hell of a problem … because we would not have made any credible transition to maintain this energy presence in the global economy,” said James Calaway, Chairman of Orocobre, Inc., and Chairman of The Center for Houston’s Future. Houston unquestionably remains the center of energy in the world, but we cannot take this position for granted. There are many examples of other cities complacently accepting their economic strength as a given and forgetting that it could go away at any minute. Look at how Detroit looked at itself during the 1950s, at the height of the first American industrial automobile age. No one in Michigan could even imagine the center of gravity in the car industry moving to another state, much less overseas. The same could happen to Houston. Although we have evolved from where we were in the 1980s, we are still a predominantly primary resource city driven by petrochemicals. There will one day be a city that clusters its economic engine

around a center for clean tech and alternative energy – there is no reason that Houston should not position itself to be that city. We have all the infrastructure, engineers and people needed to execute any ideas. THE BIONEERS HOUSTON CONFERENCE, WHILE PRAGMATICALLY ADDRESSING THE PROBLEMS HOUSTON FACES, WAS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT ITS FUTURE. THE ROOM WAS FILLED WITH HOUSTON LEADERS IN THE FOOD, ENERGY AND DESIGN WORLDS, ALL LOOKING FOR PRACTICAL, REAL WORLD SOLUTIONS TO THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WE FACE. BESIDES THE NEED TO INVEST IN CLEAN TECH, OTHER IDEAS THAT CAME OUT OF THE DAY INCLUDE: • The need for local, communitybased businesses to work together. Our local food community is showing amazing examples of what can happen when we work together, with a unified voice, to make an impact. Their mobilization to open OKRA Saloon, in response to challenges with the City, is an early model for socially conscious business owners choosing to work together to have a larger voice. • Houston needs to cluster a community of business owners that want to work together to solve social, environmental and economic problems. Andy Fyfe, a representative from B Lab, was in town from San Francisco to speak about the ability for businesses to do good. His nonprofit organization certifies businesses called “B Corps” that represent a new corporate structure (and investment asset class) that is creating a marketplace of businesses that exist to make an impact. Houston, being a perpetual entrepreneurial city, is the perfect city to experiment with solutions through our businesses.

COME SEE MY DEAD PERSON Being based in Galveston, does the ghost folklore of the island find its way into your music? Mike Mejia: I’m sure subconsciously it inspired some thought. I don’t know — we’ve always had a fascination for that sort of thing. Maybe that’s one of the things that keeps us… we’ve always had a deep-seated fascination with macabre things, horror movies… that’s just an added bonus, of us being around here. Not necessarily a driving force. I mean, you look around Galveston and you would expect that there would be tons of music like that, but there really isn’t. You guys have been working towards this album for six years. Looking at the song titles and feeling your way through it as a listener — is there a story arc? Roy Martinez: I came in kind of after the fact but I’ve kind of grown with the band since the early days, and watching the writing process — Mike and Matt are the primary songwriters for the band, right? But we all kind of make the music happen collectively, and it really is, at the risk of sounding cheesy, it really is a truly organic process that happens. It’s kind of the evolution of how these brains work together. All these mimetic themes that happen throughout the record, just stuff that’s tying stuff together, it’s completely unintentional. It just happens to be what these voices need to say. Whatever story’s being told by the record is just the story of these nine guys. It’s just what comes out of these people’s hearts. But to me that’s cool. I like the fact that we never sat down and said, “Hey, let’s do it this way.” We went in and did what we naturally would have done. It’s what came out, and I think if we tried to approach it

72. december 12 | www.002mag.com

any other way, now, retroactively, we would be doing that at the risk of compromising what we’ve found. Do the songs all start out that fast? Roy Martinez: Kinda! Yeah. I mean, typically Mike or Matt will come in with a song idea, which kind of acts as an outline, and then the core group, like me, Matt, Mike and maybe my brother will get together and we’ll make some broad stroke musical decision about how the form should be, and then we take that to the group of nine and then everybody just kind of hears it and responds to it with their instrument. And that usually ends up being… you know, there might be some tweaking here and there just to make sure, you know, the major triad works or make sure this rhythm section is tight or whatever, but the ideas are pretty much as they are first written. We present the idea to the band, they do what they feel and that’s kinda what it is. Kirk David Mayberry did the cover art for you guys — did you kind of conceptualize that together or was that something independent that he did? Matt Mejia: The guy who did the artwork is someone that we’ve sort of been an acquaintance with for many, many years, and I’ve been a fan of all of the artwork that he’s done for his groups. I fear that we walk on a thin line when it comes to being cheesy or not, so when it came to coming up with an album cover design, we would have fallen into so many holes so easily, trying to be macabre or grotesque or anything that had anything to do with death, and we actually told him at first, “We don’t want anything like a skull or anything like

that.” That’s why I went with him, actually, was to get away from the whole gore… make something different than what you’d expect a band called Come See My Dead Person would look. And the first thing he brought back to us was a picture of a skull. He was like, “Man, I just had to get it out of my system!” And while we were sitting there, he started pointing out, “Well, we could turn this into this and that,” and me and him both kind of went back and forth over different things we saw inside of the actual skull, and that’s when he inked it in and we saw the party scene and said, “Man, that sort of embodies the entire thing.” Just like how the music happens unintentionally, the artwork kind of explained it all. It just kind of organically happened. So what do you guys have planned? Are you guys going to be able to tour with nine people in the band, get out and go around Texas, go around the country? Matt: That’s certainly our intention, and also, we can break down to a single member. We do acoustic and whatever. Roy: We kind of have evolved into this modular band — sometimes it can be just me, Mike and Matt, just the three of us. Sometimes we do a five-piece acoustic set or as a full band. Matt: I guess it’s like a Voltron machine. We can either be full force or we break apart and take it on individually. Individual cats. www.csmdp.com

Bea Here Now

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

T

hey are here. Now is the appropriate time to listen to holiday music daily (unfortunately for my husband), go overboard on all decorations, assault me with sales and holiday commercials, indulge me with cookies and treats – I’m READY! Full disclosure: I’m already listening to holiday music and decorations are up the day after Thanksgiving. The older I get, the faster the month/acceptable time to enjoy these things goes by. I remember how endless time felt when I was younger. The holiday season felt like it lasted forever! So while some people hate to see holiday reminders up the day after Halloween, I embrace it. It’s over in the blink of an eye. Before you know it, it’s January and everyone is back to the normal routine. That feeling of warmth, family, renewal is replaced by the daily grind, hustle and bustle, where sharing a smile can be considered odd. I prefer holiday cheer every single day – I just discovered my resolution. Happy Holidays to you and yours! Carry the spirit through the New Year. See you in 2013!

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME. THE PASS & PROVISIONS 807 Taft St. 713.628.9020 www.passandprovisions.com Their highly anticipated opening for half, Provisions, has been well received. Hopefully as you are reading this, The Pass is open too. And after numerous visits to their bar, we made it in late one night to eat. Luckily for us, late is good because we got a table instantly. Tucked into a banquette against the reclaimed basketball floor background, we ordered drinks and this build-it-yourself pizza. Warm, buttery crust or pizza Bianca is served with a bowl that has a mound of creamy burrata atop burst tomato drizzled with olive oil. It’s hard to actually put the pizza together when all I can seem to do is eat the burrata and tomato out of the bowl. It’s all my favorite things minus some greens. THE SKY IS THE LIMIT! UP RESTAURANT 3995 Westheimer Rd. 713.640.5416 www.uprestaurant.com I like mushrooms. That being said, I like certain mushrooms. It’s a textural thing. Except when it comes to their Three Mushroom pizza. Portabello, Cremini and Beech Mushrooms are layered with Italian Crucolo cheese and leek fondue atop a crispy crust. This com-

bination with a cow’s milk cheese turned fondue-style blends well with the crispy crust and mushrooms. The whole textural thing goes out the window. I love the taste of char on the crust that only a grill can provide. And one can’t come to UP without mentioning the view. It’s amazing! Looking out over Highland Village’s palm tree-lined boulevard is like nothing else. And when they open the windows to let the outside in, that is a treat itself. CHIC SANCUTARY. TINY’S No. 5 3636 Rice Blvd. 713.664.0141 www.tinyboxwoods.com If they could build my home and decorate it, I would be a happy girl. This location, although bigger, manages to convey the same as the original. You want to just stay…a long while. IF you do stay a long while don’t miss out on their ice cream sandwich. Sandwiched in between their to-die-for cookies was mint chocolate ice cream drizzled with caramel served with a mini-milkshake shooter. The perfect nightcap! SHE MAY NOT SMILE, BUT THE FARE DOESN’T DISAPPOINT. SHANDY’S CAFÉ 5814 Memorial Dr. 713.426.2675 www.shandycafe.com So Shandy isn’t thrilled to see you when you walk in the door, who cares?! I don’t. I keep coming back.

Because when it comes to basics done right, she has nailed it. One of my favorite salads ever is the shrimp and avocado salad. Layered atop a mound of greens you’ll find steamed shrimp, bacon, Roma tomatoes and avocado dressed in spicy honey mustard topped with parmesan cheese. A combo I might not have thought of myself but it’s perfect. Ideal for a light but satisfyingly flavorful salad when just any old regular salad won’t do.

LIFE-ALTERING EXPERIENCE. STAR PIZZA 77 Harvard 713.869.1241 www.starpizza.net I’ve been on the hunt for delicious pizza ever since my regular spot bombed big time in customer service. (Who doesn’t call the customer when their driver gets a flat, after waiting TWO HOURS for a delivery?!) I got reacquainted with Star a few Sundays ago and was blown away by their deep dish pizza. Apparently I like extremes, either thin crust or deep dish. I know no medium. Prepared on a whole wheat crust with mounds of veggies, cheese and sauce, this is what I like to call a fork and knife slice. That is, until you near that nice crust! I’m forever changed.

TIRED OF THE SAME OLD THING? SURE, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO DRIVE A LITTLE WAYS TO GET THERE, BUT IT’S WORTH THE MILEAGE.

COTTONWOOD 3422 n. shepherd dr. | houston, tx 77018 713.802.0410 | www.cottonwoodhouston.com

AH,

the road trip. On some trips, the journey is the destination. Others, the destination ends up being the journey. Ultimately, we just enjoy getting away from the same old, same old Houston. Good news, fellow trippers! Taking a “vacation” just got a little easier. Cottonwood is a hidden-in-plain-sight enclave just outside the Loop (a trip to some), well worth the drive to escape that déjà vu feeling we get at times inside the Loop. Cottonwood is located in an ambitious spot. Or is it? The nondescript building Cottonwood overtook, well, most locals probably never saw it as a bar. Cottonwood’s owners noticed the potential and they set out to repurpose the Gilberts Drive Shafts building into a local destination. Open for less than a month…it’s a fact, this is a location that sat ripe for the picking for years! So what if it’s right next to Shepherd Park Draught House; there are more than enough people in Houston to fill both. That tall brick building, sitting at 3422 N. Shepherd Dr. (looking a bit like the Alamo, Cottonwood is a solid play on the Texas monument) and sandwiched between the train tracks, Graham Park and the strip with Pink’s and Shepherd Park, now has some fancy new signage. A yard of crushed granite and tasteful landscaping, huge covered patios (heated!), a stage for live music, bocce court and a massive parking area are new as well. No problem finding a parking spot here, just don’t pull too close to the tracks. The raw metal sign as you walk up welcomes you to Cottonwood, and we think you will enjoy staying for a while. Cottonwood is huge, and there are plenty of tables scattered inside and out. It was also designed very well. It does a fantastic job of making you feel like you are relaxing somewhere in West Texas. Maybe it’s because you drove so far to get here. (I

kid.) The open interior area proudly displays a huge chalkboard with all the draft beer options cleverly organized for ease of choice. Retro stools line the bar and from the ceilings dangle some impressive light fixtures keeping the cavernous room well lit. Right below the beer options rest the taps; on our trip 29 were pouring an expansive selection of craft and/or local beers, 2 cask options and 2 house wines. It’s a full bar, and many nights they have a craft cocktail menu as well. Taking in the views from any seat you are going to see plenty of kids (apparently only before 8pm, house rules), hipster parents, DINKs, local Garden Oakians – frankly all walks of life will find enjoyment here. The food is comfortable with some twists. A menu (also displayed on the website) of small plates, burgers & sandwiches, interesting ‘a little bit bigger’ plates and salads aim to please. Chicken pot pie and the onion rings were tasty, the Greek salad was generous and had a little kick, but our mushroom stuffed burger didn’t quite please like we hoped. Hey, the place has only been open a few weeks so we will happily cut Cottonwood some slack. We have no doubt that if we had any room left in our stomach, the daily fried pie or the fresh doughnut holes would have made up for that slight burger letdown. Instead, we opted for a Caucasian which was a nice low calorie dessert. Tired of the same old thing? Sure, you might have to drive a little ways to get there, but it’s worth the mileage. The locals – they already know about it and appear to be welcoming it with open arms; why not come join them? Cottonwood is both a journey and a destination. A “road trip” we think we will be making quite often.

EVENT MODERN GRAND GALA WHY TO BENEFIT MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS HOUSTON WHERE THE MFAH CAROLINE WIESS LAW BUILDING WHEN OCTOBER 12 The MODERN theme set the tone for this year’s black-tie gala with a super swanky Art Deco period extravaganza. The nearly 450 guests who walked into the museum were transported into another era thanks to the genius inspiration of John Friedman and Scott McCool, whose opulent décor left guests in awe. Guests enjoyed a three-course seated dinner by City Kitchen and live entertainment by New York-based, superstar-caliber, Starlight Orchestra.
