How many shapes can you see?

Hi kids!

What do you think it means to be brave?

Maybe you think about your favourite superheroes, such as Spider-Man or Superman. They have to be very brave to help save people and fight off villains. Or you might think about someone in your own life who shows bravery, or people in your community, such as firefighters.

As Christians, God wants us to be brave and have courage to do what is right, even if we are afraid. If we trust in Him, God will always be there to help us. This week in Just for Kids, you’ll read about Caleb and Joshua, who listened to God and showed courage when others did not.

Joshua and Caleb

God told Moses to send 12 men to explore new land, called Canaan. Two of these men were Joshua and Caleb. Moses said to them, “Is the land good or bad? Are the people who live there strong or weak? Do they have fruit trees and good soil? While you’re there, bring back some fruit!”

The men went through the desert and into Canaan to see what it was like, and after 40 days, they returned to Moses, bringing with them grapes, figs and pomegranates. “There is plenty of milk, honey and fruit,” they reported. “But the people who live there are powerful. The cities have high walls around them and are very large.”

Caleb said, “We should go take the land. We can do it!”

But the other men were afraid. They didn’t think they could do it and they did not understand why God would tell them to go there.

Joshua and Caleb reminded them, “The Lord will lead us there. He is with us.” But the other men did not trust God.

So, God said to them, “If you trust in Me, I will be with you. If you do not trust in Me, you will not enter the new land.” And because Caleb and Joshua trusted the Lord, they were the only two who entered the new land.

Hi kids!

Has anyone ever told you, “You can’t do that, you’re too young”? When it comes to following Jesus, no one is ever too young to do what’s right and make a difference.

In a letter to his disciple, Timothy, the Apostle Paul writes, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers in what you say and in how you live. Also set an example in how you love and in what you believe” (1 Timothy 4:12).

avid’s brothers were in the army. One day, David’s father sent him to visit them. They were getting ready to fight the Philistines. While David was there, a giant Philistine named Goliath came out.

“Choose a man to fight me,” Goliath said. “If he wins the fight, we will become your slaves. But if I win, you will become our slaves.” No one was brave enough to accept Goliath’s challenge.

But David knew God was stronger than Goliath. He offered to fight him. The king told David not to do it: “You’re too young and small to fight Goliath.”

“God has helped me in the past,” David replied, “and I know God will help me now.”

Goliath laughed when he saw David. He even made fun of God. David pulled out his slingshot and hit Goliath with a stone. Goliath went down. God helped David save his people from the Philistine army.

Colouring Corner What are some of the biggest things you can think of? Did You Know? Did you know that blue whales are the largest animals to have ever lived? They are even larger than dinosaurs! They can grow to weigh over 130,000 kilograms, which is about the size of 30 Tyrannosaurus rex put together. But blue whales are considered “gentle giants”—they have hearts the size of cars! 45-11/12/22 Just for Kids is a Ready to Explore resource, published weekly by The Salvation Army, Canada and Bermuda, 2 Overlea Blvd, Toronto, ON, M4H 1P4. Daniel and the Lions’ Den

Daniel was a captive in Babylon. Even though he missed his home, he worked hard for King Darius. Three times each day, Daniel went to his window, facing Jerusalem, to pray.

King Darius was pleased with Daniel, but his co-workers became jealous. They made a wicked plan. They told the king, “We want everyone in Babylon to know how great you are. This month, everyone must pray to you and no other god. Anyone who disobeys shall be thrown into the lions’ pit.”

Darius was certain everyone would obey, so their plan became law.

Daniel still prayed only to God. He opened his window and knelt. Daniel’s enemies were watching and arrested him.

“Daniel, this makes me sad,” said Darius. “But I must uphold the law.” He had Daniel thrown into the pit.

Darius did not sleep that night. As soon as the sun rose, he ran to the pit calling, “Daniel, has your God protected you?”

Daniel replied, “My God has saved me! He closed the lions’ mouths.”

Darius had the guards pull Daniel out. Daniel kept working for the king, depending on God to make him wise.

How many of each shape can you find?
Doing the right thing is hard sometimes. In this week’s Bible story, you’ll read about Daniel, who was given the choice between obeying God or being fed to lions. Yikes!
It was a difficult decision, but Daniel did what was right and God protected him. When you’re facing a tough situation, and you don’t know what to do, ask God to help you make the right choice.

Hi kids!

What would you do if you were queen

king for a day? You might wear nice clothes and jewels, spend the day in a castle and be served your favourite snacks. It sounds like fun, but the position also comes with a lot of responsibility.

In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read about a queen from the Bible named Esther. Queen Esther was the wife of King Xerxes, who ruled Persia hundreds of years ago. Queen Esther had the chance to do something really important on behalf of her people, the Jews. But she had to be brave and trust God.

Queen Esther is Brave

Esther Speaks to Xerxes

sther was the queen of Persia, wife of King Xerxes. One of the king’s helpers was a man named Haman. Haman had an evil plan. He tricked King Xerxes into making a law to kill all of the Jewish people. The king and Haman didn’t know that Queen Esther was Jewish.

What can I do to save my people? Esther wondered. She wanted to talk to the king about the law, but she was afraid. Anyone who went to see the king without being invited could be killed—even the queen.

Esther asked all of the other Jews to pray, and then she went to see the king. The king was happy to see her. She invited the king and Haman to dinner and asked the king to save her people. The king was angry. He asked, “Who would want to hurt my queen?”

“It’s Haman,” Esther answered. The king had Haman taken away. Then the king let Esther write a new law to protect Jewish people. The Jews were saved!
