Hi kids! Earlier this year, there was a big snowstorm where I live. It shut down most of the city. I saw many cars on my street get stuck in the snow. Their tires were no match for the storm. Yet, when it seemed like those cars would never get moving again, something special happened: people from the neighbourhood came to help them. One person shovelled snow. Another person pushed the car. Someone else brought cardboard to put under the wheels. Soon, the cars were moving again. It’s amazing what can be done when we work together! Long ago, God wanted to have a place to be with His people, so He asked them to make Him a special tent. (His people, the Israelites, moved around a lot, so it didn’t make sense for them to make a permanent building.) It was a lot of work, but the Israelites made it happen by working together. It would have been impossible for one person to make the tent on their own. When we co-operate, we can do a lot more together than we can do alone. As the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:9, “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.”

Building God’s House

Exodus 25, 39

A

fter God’s people, the Israelites, left Egypt, they came to the Desert of Sinai. While in the desert, God gave Moses, their leader, many instructions. God wanted to live among His people, so He asked them to build Him a sacred tent. God told His people exactly how He wanted them to make the tent and everything in it. It was a huge project. Even though Moses was the leader, many other people helped out. Everyone had to work together to build God’s house. There were skilled craftsmen who did a lot of the work. Whole teams of men and women developed new skills and used them to build the special tent. Then there were all the people who brought supplies to God’s house. They brought things they owned or gathered and things they had made. And when the tent moved, there were tribes of people whose job was to pack up the tent, carry it and then set it up again.

When the Israelites finished building the tent, Moses looked over their work carefully. He saw that they had made it just as God wanted, so Moses gave them his blessing.

When it is a little pale (pail)

It’s been a tough couple of years. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the whole world has gone through many changes. Our schools and churches have had to close at some points. Many people have become sick. It’s OK to feel sad about what has happened—I feel sad, too. In this issue of Just for Kids, you will read a story about a man who was healed by Jesus. Since he couldn’t walk, he was brought to Jesus by four of his friends. Talk about nice friends! It’s a wonderful example of how we can work together to help others in need. Sickness can be a terrible thing— especially when people do not get better. But in the end, when we go to be with Jesus, the Bible tells us that there will be no crying or pain, no death at all (see Revelation 21:4). That is a beautiful promise!

Friends Bring a Man to Jesus

Mark 2:1-12

Jesus Heals a Man

J

esus was teaching at a house in the city of Capernaum. So many people gathered to hear Him that there was no room left.

Four men came carrying a man who could not walk. But they could not get him close to Jesus because of the crowd. So they made a hole in the roof above Jesus. Then they lowered the man through it on a mat. Jesus saw that the men believed in Him. Jesus spoke to the man who could not walk: “Get up. Take your mat and go home.” The man got up and took his mat. Then he walked away while everyone watched. All the people were amazed. They praised God and said, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Tough Topics: Chronic Illnesses Everybody gets sick sometimes, but we usually get better. Yet for some people, sickness is something that doesn’t go away. We call this a “chronic” illness. Some examples include cancer, cerebral palsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Here are two things you can do to help people with chronic illness: • Find out more about these illnesses:

Choose a chronic illness and learn how it affects people. You may want to choose a condition that affects someone you know. • Give practical support: Offer to help a person who is ill with a task that is difficult for them. Raise funds for an organization that helps people with a chronic illness (e.g., Alzheimer Society of Canada).

The New Believers Share Meals

Hi kids! Do you play any team sports? When I was growing up, I played hockey and I still love getting out on the ice and passing the puck around. With any team sports, you’ll always have a few superstars—people like Wayne Gretzky, LeBron James and Christine Sinclair. But you can’t get by on superstars alone. You need a whole team to win. When Jesus went back to heaven after His Resurrection, His followers had a big job to do: sharing the good news about God’s love with everyone. To do that, they needed to work together. They shared everything they had. They had meals together. They made sure everyone had enough. Working together wasn’t something they did occasionally. It was a way of life.

Followers of Jesus Share Everything

Acts 2:42-47

A

fter Jesus finished His ministry on earth and went back to heaven, His disciples began sharing the good news about Jesus with everyone. His disciples were called apostles. Many people believed in Jesus because of their preaching.

“Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” —Ecclesiastes 4:9

The new believers studied what the apostles taught. They shared their lives together. They ate and prayed together. Everyone was amazed at what God was doing. They were amazed when the apostles performed many wonders and signs. All the believers were together. They shared everything they had. They sold property and other things they owned. They gave to anyone who needed something. Every day they met together in the temple courtyard. They ate meals together in their homes. Their hearts were glad and sincere. They praised God. They were respected by all the people. Every day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved.
