Amazing Gracie

Hi kids!

Did you know that a newborn can’t see very far away? She can only see blurs of light and shapes. It takes a whole month for a baby’s eyes to develop enough to see her mother’s face, just a few inches away. In this week’s Bible story, we see d Abram’s faith in the way he trusts Go with his whole life, even when God am doesn’t show him the full picture. Abr new and his wife, Sarai, move to a strange am and Abr land when God calls them to. Next, give them a Sarai ask God to do the impossible—to to have one! child, even though they are too old n when he Abram trusts God with his future, eve to trust Him can’t see what’s ahead. Can we learn like Abram?

CLARENVILLE, N.L.—When Gracie Marsh, a junior soldier at Clarenville Corps, celebrated her birthday earlier this year, she decided to use the occasion as a fundraiser. She asked her friends to give her money instead of gifts because she wanted to support The Salvation Army’s Partners in Mission campaign. Together, Gracie and her friends raised $157. Here’s Gracie with her corps officers, Majors Bill and Velma Preston.

Abram Moves to a New Home

God Calls Abram to a New Home

Genesis 12, 15

A

bram was a man who loved and obeyed God. One day God said to him, “Abram, I want you to leave your home. I will give you a new land. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. All nations on earth will be blessed because of you.” Abram had faith, so he obeyed God. He left his home even though he didn’t know where he was going. Abram took his wife, Sarai, with him. Abram and Sarai settled in their new home. Even though they were happy there, they were sad that they did not have any children. Abram prayed and asked God to give them a child. Then God spoke to Abram. “You will have a son of your own,” God told him. He took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky. Count the stars, if you can. That’s how many children will be born into your family.” Abram and Sarai were old—too old to have children. But they had faith. So God made it possible for Sarai to become a mother. Abram and Sarai believed God and He was faithful.

Hi kids! Approximately 1,500 metres under the Pacific Ocean lives a tiny crustacean known as the mantis shrimp. This creature is only 10 centimetres long, which is about the size of a piece of classroom chalk. I’ve seen a mantis shrimp at an aquarium, and at first glance he’s easy to pass by. With a sandy brown shell and clear bulging eyes, he’s not eye-catching by any means. But scientists are studying this amazing little creature because of his ability to see colour unlike any other in the animal kingdom. The mantis shrimp can see 16 types of colours. Our human eyes see a mixture of red, green and blue. In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll meet Saul (also known as Paul). God has to do something really big to get Saul to see the real purpose of his life.

Saul Meets Jesus

Acts 9

N

ot long after Jesus went back to heaven, some people began to persecute His followers. One of those people, named Saul, travelled from Damascus to Jerusalem looking for Christians to put in jail. He asked the religious leaders for permission to do this: Just as Saul was nearing the city of Damascus a light from the sky flashed around him and as he fell to the ground a voice spoke to him …

24 Saul’s travelling companions heard Jesus speak but didn’t see anything. The dazzling experience had left Saul completely blind. Saul’s friends took him to Damascus. There he met a man named Ananias who taught him about Jesus and helped him see again. Saul became a missionary. Today we know him as the Apostle Paul. He didn’t want to listen to Jesus at first. But after he met Him, Saul told others about Him for the rest of his life. (Adapted from Boring Bible, Hyper Holy Happenings by Andy Robb. Used with permission.)

Hi kids! Have you ever gotten a letter in the mail with your name on it? How exciting! We know that mail carriers are used in Canada to deliver mail around the country. In medieval times, kingdoms also had “special people” to get messages around. Can you guess what they were called? (Take a closer look at the sentence above for a hint!) If you guessed “messengers,” you’re correct! It was seen as a very important job since it helped the king know what was going on in his kingdom. This week, The Salvation Army is having its annual “commissioning” service. This is when Salvation Army cadets become “officers” or pastors. It’s an exciting time of year because it marks the beginning of a special journey for each officer who will go on to spread the messages of Jesus to the world. Read more about commissioning in this issue of Just for Kids.

he Salvation Army has special schools that men and women attend because they feel called by God to become Salvation Army officers. After two years of training at these schools, these men and women are “commissioned.” They are given the task of serving others and sharing the good news about God’s love.

Lieutenants Joel and Lynn Torrens were commissioned in 2019 in Vancouver as part of the Messengers of Compassion Session

Every graduation class (or “session”) of Salvation Army officers has a special name. This year’s class is called the messengers of the Kingdom. While earthly kingdoms are a thing of the past, we know there is a heavenly kingdom where Jesus sits on the throne. Jesus still uses messengers here on earth to spread His Word. These officers work for the kingdom of heaven, to spread God’s Word across Canada and Bermuda.Remember to pray for all the new Salvation Army officers who are being Messengers of the Kingdom Session commissioned on June 20.

Here are some animals found in Canada. Can you fit their names into the puzzle?

This week we celebrate Canada’s 153rd birthday on July 1, which we call Canada Day. Did you know that The Salvation Army is even older than Canada? It’s true! The Army was founded in 1865—two years before Canada.

You might wonder why we set aside a day each year to celebrate the founding of Canada. There’s actually a lot of things to celebrate about being Canadian. In this country, we have laws that protect our rights and freedoms, including the freedom to have religious beliefs. That means we are free to follow Jesus and tell others about Him. In some countries, people are not allowed to be Christians.
