Partners in Mission

Hi kids! More than 100 years ago, William Booth asked members of The Salvation Army to give money to help poor people in other countries. A Salvation Army officer named Major John Carleton wanted to help, but he didn’t have any extra money to give. Major Carleton decided he would give up his dessert every day for a year and offer that money to William Booth to help others. William Booth was so impressed with Major Carleton’s idea, he asked other members of The Salvation Army to do the same thing. William Booth called it a SelfDenying League. Today in Canada and Bermuda we call it Partners in Mission. We still try to give up something small for a few weeks, like a treat we buy on the way home from school. It reminds us of how much we have compared with many others around the world. Then we donate the money we’ve saved to help people around the world as part of a global Salvation Army family. What can you give up for a few weeks this year?

Your friend, Kristin

T

he Salvation Army has many children’s homes around the world. These homes are places where children who are alone, without the support of parents or other family members, can live and receive all the essentials that they need. They receive food, medical care, education and a place to call home. Deby (top right photo) is 15 years old and she has been living at The Salvation Army’s Denpasar Girls Home in Indonesia for 11 years. Deby has never met her parents but she thinks of the staff and other children at the home as her family. Even though Deby has never lived with her family, she has always had the support of the Salvation Army children’s home. She is able to be involved in all the regular activities that other children her age would do. She likes to participate in exercise class, singing practice and dance. She is also learning how to cook and bake. But her favourite activity is knitting. Deby dreams of becoming an IT expert after she finishes school.

Jesus Meets a Woman in Samaria John 4

Hi kids! This week, we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Will you give valentines to your friends and family? I’ve got cards ready to go. Valentine’s Day is a good opportunity for us to tell people that we love them. Cards and chocolates are great, but there’s so much more we can do to show others that they matter. Share your toys with your brother or sister. Give someone a hug when they are sad. Find someone who is eating lunch alone and sit with them. Listen when others talk—don’t just wait for your own turn to speak. As you’ll see in this week’s Bible story, Jesus treated everyone with care and kindness. When He met the Samaritan woman, He could have ignored her. Instead, He took the time to talk to her. He even stayed in her town for two days and spent time with all the people she knew. How can you show others they matter this week?

Jesus answered her, “You do not know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would have asked Him to give you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “where can you get this living water?” Jesus answered, “Anyone who drinks the water I give them will never be thirsty. In fact, the water I give them will lead to eternal life.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water. Then I will never be thirsty.” At that time, Jews and Samaritans worshipped God in different places. Jews worshipped in Jerusalem while Samaritans worshipped on their own mountain.

Jesus said to the woman, “A time is coming when you will not worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. True worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know that the Messiah is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus said, “The One you’re talking about is the One speaking to you. I am He.”

hile Jesus was travelling, He stopped in a town called Sychar in Samaria. Jesus was tired and thirsty so He sat down by a well.

The Samaritan woman said to Him, “You are a Jew. I am a Samaritan. How can You ask me for a drink?” She said this because Jews don’t have anything to do with Samaritans.

“Somebunny likes you!”

Lunch for 5,000

Hi kids! I once read a quote that said: “Anyone who thinks they are too small to make a difference has never spent a night trapped in a tent with a mosquito.” Having camped a lot, I’ve been there—and I had the bites to prove it! Sometimes we feel kind of small in life. Maybe you think, I’m just a kid—what can I really do to make a difference? The boy in this week’s Bible story didn’t have much—just five loaves of bread and two fish. That’s barely enough food for a few people, never mind 5,000! But he offered it to Jesus all the same. And Jesus multiplied it so that everyone could eat and be satisfied. It’s like that with us, too. We don’t have to do something big or expensive. We can use what we have to help others. That might mean sharing your pens with a classmate or helping an older neighbour by clearing snow. It could be helping someone carry their books to class or donating your gently used clothes to a Salvation Army thrift store. You never know what could happen when you use what you have to help someone else. A small thing could have a big impact.

esus and His disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd of people followed them.

Jesus saw them coming and asked His disciple, Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” Philip answered, “Even if we were able to buy enough bread for each person to have just a bite— that would cost more than half a year’s pay!” Then Andrew, another disciple, spoke up. He said, “Here is a boy with five small loaves of bread and two small fish. But that’s not enough for this large crowd.” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” About 5,000 men were there. Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. He handed out the bread to those who were seated. He gave them as much E ISSU as they wanted. And 8 He did the same with the fish. When everyone had enough to eat, Jesus spoke to His disciples: “Gather the leftover pieces. Don’t waste anything.” So they gathered what was left over and filled 12 baskets with the pieces.

A Blind Man Can See Again

Hi kids! I was out walking recently when I noticed a woman who looked confused. I asked her if she needed help. She was lost and looking for the nearest subway station. I knew where it was so I walked with her until she could see the entrance. She was very grateful. We see people who need help all the time. But sometimes, it’s easy to pass them by. Jesus found Himself in a similar situation. While walking one day, He met a blind man named Bartimaeus who wanted Jesus to heal him. Other people wanted Bartimaeus to go away, but Jesus didn’t. Jesus took the time to help him. The story of Bartimaeus reminds us not to ignore people when they need our help. How can you be kind to others this week?

A blind man was sitting by the side of the road begging. His name was Bartimaeus. He heard that Jesus was passing by. So he began to shout, “Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!” Many people told him to stop. “Be quiet,” they said. But Bartimaeus shouted even louder, “Son of David! Have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and called him over. “What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked Bartimaeus. The blind man said, “Teacher, I want to be able to see.”
