It is impossible ignore the impact of education in the human society. In fact, in today’s world a person is not given importance if he/she is not educated. Education not only trains the human mind, but also helps us to take the right decision. One can say that education essentially makes us human. Most of our knowledge is collected in a written format. Therefore, libraries are large databases that do not serve only as a source of information, but as a symbol of our civilization and intellect.
Reading is essentially a process of recognizing symbols into a meaningful context. However this process is not merely a visual activity. Most of our knowledge is obtained through the ability to perceive and understand our environment. This is not done by one sense only, but by combination of all known senses to create an image of space atmosphere and relation. This perception is known as haptic perception and involves haptic senses. In the act of reading haptic senses play a large role. The physical contact with the reading medium, no matter if it is hypertext or a printed source, gives us important information about the size, age and what is most important it creates an emotional bond with the medium. The amount of written content, combined with our anatomical comfort determines how we interact with the medium and what position we place our body in.
The issue Because reading was and still is considered a visual task libraries fail to provide users with a space that is adaptable to their needs. Not everyone prefers to sit at a desk while reading.
Thesis proposal This thesis aims to answer how interior design can take an active role in building a haptic reading environment and push it further so that people can use the architectural framework as a ground to better engage in the activity of reading.
