NOTE

Welcome to Y Magazine – your top guide to the best of Oman every week.

Fast forward

Ramadan Mubarak

R

amadan is the holy month of fasting and prayers. Sadly, those who are sober by the day and restrain themselves from extravagance suddenly throw caution to the wind as far as food is concerned. Elaborate iftar (breaking of fast) parties seem to have become a competition for making status statements about the number of guests and dishes. This results in wastage of huge amounts of food which could otherwise have filled the scorching bellies of hungry people all over the world. Let us have ‘food for thought’. Allah surely does not love extravagance. When we strive to seek the pleasure of Allah we must obey His commands, especially about eating, drinking and not wasting food. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that 1.3 bil-lion tonnes of food is lost or wasted globally every year. Oman is no exception. According to an official report, Oman wastes food worth RO50 million every year and this is horrendous. Our cover story this week talks about food wastage that happens mostly during Ramadan and tips to minimise this wastage. We also feature downhill hero René Wildhaber who enjoyed an uphill experience in Salalah blazing the trail of the camels and some of the cool food apps that you could try during Ramadan.

Extended hours for your convenience. We are pleased to extend the timings of our out-patient clinics for the convenience of our valued guests, all through the holy month of Ramadan. FIVE FABULOUS REASONS TO JUSTIFY THE INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE TAGLINE AS THE 2018 EDITION IS JUST A FEW DAYS AWAY FROM AN EXCITING FINALE

B

06

oduced the Indian Premier League (IPL), few were familiar with the T20 format. Following the same franchise-based format as that of the English Premier League and the National Basketball League (NBA) of the US, the then BCCI vice president Lalit Modi launched the tournament as a competitive response to the Indian Cricket League (ICL). A decade later, overpowering all the controversies related to spot-fixing, conflict with England and Wales Cricket Board as well as truffles with domestic cricket clubs, allegations involving tax exemptions, etc., the IPL made its solitary mark in world cricket. Here we look at the top five reasons which justify the tagline: “Best vs Best”.

to climb the summit. 2) Foreign Players: IPL continues to be the home of various foreign talented international players who play a major role for their respective nations. Quality of the game breaks the roof when the likes of Ben Stokes, Kieron Pollard, Mitchel Starc, Steve Smith, Sunil Narine, Faf Du Plessis and David Warner set the crowd on fire. They mix up so well with the Indian cricketers that together they make the cricket a real pleasure to watch.

1) Quality of Cricket: For a moment let us keep aside the excessive focus on cash, celebrity rush and ignore the pretty cheerleaders. Now isn’t it fair to comment that the glamorous IPL is also a coaching institute and finishing school for young players and make them ready for next level? Almost every match goes down to the wire, nail-biting finishes are witnessed on a regular basis. IPL is where the youngsters share dressing rooms with cricketing legends. Now obviously if Test cricket is everyone’s pinnacle, IPL is not the best way

4) Popularity: The IPL is broadcasted in most of the countries by around 25+ sports networks. Here, the world’s richest cricket board has come up with best marketing strategy, hence today IPL turns out to be a grand success.

MAY 24 - 30 / ISSUE 521

3) Attendance: The IPL is the most attended cricket league and currently ranked sixth among all sports league in the world. The IPL figures an astounding average attendance of 31,509 and a total attendance of 1,567,543 (2017).

5) Money: $8 million (INR 51 crore) was the total prize pool for the 2017 IPL season. Winners were awarded $4 million while the runnersup bagged $2 million. Other two playoff teams got 6.5 crore each.

OUR INDIAN TALENT HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING: PONTING

elhi Daredevils may have finished at the bottom of the pile in this year’s IPL, but their coach Ricky Ponting sees a lot of positives that his side could take from the season that has just gone by. With a host of talented young Indian players in their setup, DD gave the likes of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw and Avesh Khan a good run in the side. On his part, Ponting felt that the Indian talent was outstanding, and that they were not to be blamed for not finishing higher on the table. “I actually do [in response to the scouts who picked the aforementioned Indian youngsters],” asserted Ponting. “Our Indian talent has been outstanding and I think the Indian batsmen have contributed probably all bar about 400 runs that we have made in the entire tournament. We can’t complain there. Our scouting was very good,” he added.

ndia aims to launch a women’s version of its hugely popular Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament in the next three years, a senior official said Tuesday. As part of the build-up, top international women players will take part in a Twen-ty20 game at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium next week. “We are planning to get a women’s IPL in place in two to three years,” Board of Control for Cricket in India administrator Vinod Rai told news agency AFP. No firm details of the new league have yet been revealed, but pressure for a women’s IPL has been building since India reached the final of the women’s World Cup in England last year. England’s Danni Wyatt, Australian allrounder Ellyse Perry and New Zea-land captain Suzie Bates are some of the names confirmed for the May 22 exhibition game. Top Indians including national skipper Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Harmanpreet Kaur will compete in an Indian team under IPL rules in the exhibition. “The match to be played between a BCCI XI and IPL XI will take place ahead of the first (men’s IPL) playoff at the Wankhede Stadium,” Rai said. Also signed up are wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, Megan Schutt and Beth Mooney from Australia, and Kiwi batter Sophie Devine, who holds the record for the fastest half-century in women’s T20Is. IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said: “Even as the IPL continues to roll like a well-oiled machine, over the last couple of weeks efforts were made to put in place a similar structure for women cricketers. “We were in talks with several boards and I am pleased with the out-come.”

Who will win the 2018 IPL title? Predict the winner and win a SIM with 2GB data pack worth RO 5 from Friendi Mobile. Email us your predictions to editor@y-oman.com. *Names of the winners will be announced on May 31st.

THE VOICE OF OMAN A PASSIONATE MESSAGE SENT OUT BY KUWAITI TELECOM COMPANY ZAIN MAKES HASAN AL LAWATI WONDER WHY BIG CORPORATE HOUSES IN OMAN MISS THE BUS

correspondence DEBATE OF THE WEEK WE ASKED: The Ministry of Manpower is regularly monitoring and cracking down on late salary payments by companies in the private sector. Are you receiving your salary on time?

We will have iftar in Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine.” This is the powerful message sent out by Kuwaiti telecommunications company Zain through its Ramadan-special TV ad. The musical clip shows an Arab child inside the Oval Office promising US President Donald Trump that Muslims will break their fast this Ramadan in Jerusalem. The release of the ad came two days after the US had moved its embassy to Jerusalem – a decision that triggered protests across the Gaza Strip and resulted in the death of more than 50 Palestinians. And the message doesn’t stop there. The clip sheds light on the injustices being faced by the Muslim world, including the Syrian refugee crisis and the ethnic cleans-ing of Rohingyas in Myanmar. The three-minute video features lookalikes of Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The video went viral on social media on the first day of its re-lease: it crossed half a million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours, gaining 26,000 likes – a figure which has since risen to more than 140K. Not only the video stirred conversation on social media but also maximised the brand’s exposure all over the Arab world. While its content has nothing to do with telecommunications as such, the company orchestrated an emotional scenario that touched the right nerve. The timing, sensitivity, inclusivity, lan-guage and the choice of actors make Zain one of the best TV ads in the region. In Oman, a place where advertisers are still stuck in the 80s, we should take this as an example of a good, contentrich commercial. Like Zain, our big companies can start building a brand identity and image that transcend boundaries. The Kuwaiti company made sure to insert the colour and branding throughout the video in an elegant, appealing manner. This is not the first time Zain has taken a political stance: last year, the company went vocal against fundamentalism in the region, sending a bold statement through a commercial that addressed the aftermath of the 2015 terrorist bombing of a Kuwait mosque.

SANJEEB GHOSH

A good move from the Omani government. Locals or expatriates, no one should suffer from late payment of salaries after putting in hard work for a month.

MICHAEL RAMIN

An awesome move, but the big question is: what if the company has truly no funds to pay the salaries due to uncollected revenues since almost all companies are financially struggling?

GAUTAM GHOSH DASTIDAR

If I am the only part of this ‘you’ addressed in the debate’s topic, well, in the last sixteen years and six months I have never got paid late. However, if this ‘you’ includes all of us in Oman, there are my friends in particular among the blue-collar employees who suffer from the blues all year round! Kudos to the Omani government for standing by them! Kudos to Y also for the well-timed wakeup call!

ZAHID SAEED

Pay day brings cheers to an employee but when salaries get delayed almost every month for days and even weeks it will have an impact on their performance. Most companies are financially struggling, and we understand that it is the reason for the delay, but whatever the reason it’s tough, rather impossible, to put up with the delays.

ELIZABETH JOSEPH

The initiative taken by the Ministry of Manpower to protect employees is well appreciated. With regard to the organisation I work at, all the employees receive salary by

WRITE TO US AND YOU COULD WIN

the first week of every month. The Ministry of Manpower should conduct frequent checks and should get regular feedbacks from employees in different sectors to address the difficulties they face.

SAMUEL PITRODA

Many companies here delay payment of salaries on time and for doing that they have a nice excuse: the economic situation is bad. Some of these companies were doing the same thing even when things were smooth a couple of years ago. On the other hand, there are companies that try their best to pay their staff. I believe some companies are taking advantage of the economic situation not just to delay salary payments but to implement other cuts in the name of cost-cutting measures.

SHINY SUPAROO

There is a good way to overcome some of the unpleasantness associated with delay in salary payments. Why don’t the companies enter into a long-term arrangement with a few firms in the key sectors so that employees do not get affected by cash crunch? Let the companies sign a year-long pact with hypermarkets, hospitals and schools. Food, medicine and education are the essential sectors for one to survive so if companies sign pact with key players in these sectors whereby their employees could avail the services of these sectors without making real-time payment. At the end of the month the hypermarkets, hospitals and the school concerned could send the bills to the employers who could then settle the bill in a mutually agreed time-frame. How do you like my idea!?

You cannot walk out of a restaurant after treating yourself to a grand meal without paying for the services you have availed of. Similarly, you cannot go to a hypermarket, pick up what you want and just walk out without paying the bill. In these places, and many others, you need to pay immediately for what you have been supplied with. And now look at the situation elsewhere. An employee puts in eight hours of hard work at a company and at the end of a month he or she hopes to get paid for the work with which he or she could run his or her life, as well as that of the dependents, but the bosses just would not pay him or her. I say this absolutely unacceptable. If you got no money to pay your staff, simply shut down your business.

With crude prices staying consistently above $50 a barrel, the economy should make rapid strides back to the pre-crisis days. I hope the companies will pay us on time as well as reinstate the perks cut on the excuse of cost-cutting measures needed for survival during the crisis. I am sure a majority of them will invent new excuses no to do that.

30 FREED FROM PRISON, THANKS TO LAWYERS’ CHARITY CAMPAIGN

T

hirty people have been released from jail in Dhahirah governorate, thanks to the Fak Kurbah programme. The Fak Kurbah (Redeeming Anguish) campaign was launched by the Oman Lawyers Association (OLA) in 2012 and has been embraced by both Omanis and expatriates. Mohammad Al Zadjali, head of the OLA and the Legislative and Legal Committee of the Shura Council, said 30 loan defaulters had been

released in Dhahirah courts on Sunday following a donation from an unidentified person. “People come in droves to help this noble cause. It’s a good feeling,” he said. Al Zadjali expects more than 500 prisoners to benefit from the campaign this year. This year, Fak Kurbah’s fundraising will be organised during three awareness campaigns in governorates of Muscat, Sohar and Dhofar. Donations can also be made to a bank account connected to the initiative. The programme helps raise funds to pay off debts in insolvency cases where people have been jailed. Now in its fifth edition, the initiative kicked off last week with the release of a prisoner in wilayat Shinas following a donation of RO5,000 by women living in Dhofar. ‘Fak Kurbah’ was launched in 2012 by 10 lawyers who succeeded in securing the release of people involved in 44 different cases. More than 1,205 prisoners have been freed so far as a result of the association’s work.

COMPANY FINED RO7,000 FOR

CONSUMER LAW VIOLATION

A

motor dealership in Oman has been fined RO7,000, according to the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP). The company was fined after officials from the PACP received a complaint from a consumer who bought a truck and a crane from the car dealer. “It was agreed that the maximum load that the crane could carry was seven-and-a-half tons. However, after a while it was discovered that the load the crane (could carry) was much lower. As a result, the crane could not lift heavy weights,”

authorities said. The accused violated the provisions of Article 25 of the Consumer Protection Law which states: “The supplier shall be required to return the goods and refund them or replace them or repair them free of charge if the consumer finds fault with them.” The preliminary court in Sohar issued a judgment against the motor dealership for violating the Consumer Protection Act. The court fined the company RO 2,000 and the owner RO5,000.

f

ood for thought As mountains of food continue to rise in Ramadan shopping trolleys, we overlook the sobering statistic that RO57m worth of food in Oman is thrown away yearly – most of it during the Holy Month. Nishad Padiyarath investigates the human cost of this wastage

024

MAY 24 - 30 / ISSUE 521

THIS IS A CRIME AND THE BIGGEST OFFENDERS ARE HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS – ALL UNEATEN FOOD ENDS UP IN THE RUBBISH BINS

O

n May 15, two days before the start of Ramadan, I walked into a leading hypermarket in Muscat to get the food supplies I required. The shop was crowded with people stocking up on things for the month. A quick glance into most of the heavily laden trolleys, and I could see all sorts of food: rice, pasta, cans of this and that, dessert boxes, fruits and vegetables — the list goes on. Everywhere in the hypermarket there were various special deals and food promotions: buy two sunflower oil bottles and get an additional one for free, buy four packs of creme caramel and get the fifth free, or get many other items in packages for less than their usual price. Many food products have a “Ramadan Kareem” greeting written on them, with illustrations of lanterns, mosques and crescents. This is a familiar scene almost every year at this time and every time I see it I can’t help but wonder: isn’t Ramadan the month of fasting? Isn’t it the month in which we are supposed to eat less and pray more, spend on ourselves less and give the needy more? During the holy month, households, restaurants and hotels tend to prepare more food than is consumed. Unfortunately, a large portion of food usually ends up in landfill. And despite the constant calls from authorities to cut down on food wastage during Ramadan, the amount of dumped food is enormous. According to the United Nations World Food Programme, about 25,000 people die of hunger or hunger-related causes every day. On the other hand, statistics by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation show that at least 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year around the world, with the Middle East, including Oman, recognised as a disproportionate contributor.

RO57m dumped in landfills

Food wastage is a serious concern in Oman, with the problem exacerbating during Ramadan. Hotels, catering companies and individuals in Oman throw away food worth more than RO50

million every year, according to a top official at Oman Environmental Service Holding Company (be’ah). “Our study based on an analysis of landfills found that 27 per cent of the waste consists of food and that it costs around RO57 million. Sultan Qaboos University did a similar study and the findings were almost identical. You’d be surprised that food waste spikes during Ramadan. What one can do to cut this waste is buy only what one needs and not exceed one’s requirement,” said be’ah vice president Mohammad Al Harthy. “We see an increase in food wastage during Ramadan due to various reasons. Therefore, we conduct several campaigns during the year to educate people about the concept of reduction and to effect behavioural changes in their food shopping habits, especially during Ramadan,” Al Harthy mentioned. “This is a crime and the biggest offenders are hotels and restaurants – all uneaten food ends up in the rubbish bins,” said Ahmed Shakel, an activist who helps the needy during Ramadan. “The second offenders are the supermarkets which throw out food that go past their shelf date. Here in Oman we have many poor people and this is the time we need to help them. The food we waste can be given to the needy,” Shakel said.

Charity begins at home

Most of the food wastage happens due to the party-size feasts that take place at homes as well as mosques. “There comes the community outreach role to change the wrong habits of generating food waste through spreading awareness on ways to reduce waste and enlighten people about the negative impact of consuming a high amount of food and how it affects the environment,” said the source at be’ah. However, hotels in Oman say they are forced to throw away leftovers because of strict health regulations. “We cannot keep cooked food and serve it next day. This is against the rules. Therefore, we throw away the leftovers,” said an official at a leading hotel in Muscat. According to a source at the Muscat Municipality who keeps a strict watch on hotels, hypermarkets, restaurants and catering companies, they can give away uneaten food to the needy. “Fresh uneaten food can be given away to the needy on the same day if they are fresh

Tips to help minimize food wastage be’ah shares five tips to help you minimise your food wastage: ■ Cook just as much as

needed

■ Shop wisely ■ Fertilize food waste ■ Check the expiry days

before final purchase.

■ Plan ahead for your meals

WHEN THERE ARE LEFTOVERS FROM IFTAR I REFRIGERATE IT FOR SUHOOR. I CALCULATE IT PROPERLY. IF THERE ARE MORE LEFTOVERS AFTER IFTAR I WILL ALSO GIVE TO MY FRIENDS

rather than throwing away,” said the official. Charity organisations are also on the lookout for establishments who could help them feed poor families. Leading charity organisation Dar Al Atta’a will provide iftar meals for 300 fasting people every day this Ramadan at three mosques at Al Suwaiq, Al Musanaah and Samail, spending RO9,000 for the purpose. “This is part of our adoption of abandoned families under the Programme of Islamic Values. Dar Al Atta’a spent RO36,982 and distributed Ramadan supplies for this year to 578 families and the number may increase,” said a spokesperson for the organisation.

Food wastage is criminal

Hina Sulaiman, a housewife, ensures no food is wasted during Ramadan. “It’s all about how you plan your iftar,” she said explaining how she manages the food. “When there are leftovers from iftar I refrigerate it for suhoor. I calculate it properly. If there are more leftovers after iftar I will also give to my friends,” she added. The holy month comes every year to remind us of the many people around the world who

026

MAY 24 - 30 / ISSUE 521

don’t have enough food, said Hasna Annacot, IT manager at Amouage Perfumes. “The true meaning of fasting is to experience hunger; to feel humility and compassion towards the poor. One person in the world dies every three seconds because of hunger. Waste of food is criminal,” she pointed out. “Think about your fellow Muslim, especially the one who goes without food this Ramadan and think yourself lucky you have money to buy food where he does not,” Hasna added. Meanwhile, Al Harthy claimed that a good way to bring down food wastage was to raise

awareness about the issue among the masses. “At the end of the day, it goes back to people. What we can do is raise awareness and ask them not to waste food. Moreover, authorities can try to use this waste to produce compost for farming or biogas to derive energy out of it. “We at be’ah try to cut food wastage by managing our events better. We get only the amount of food that is required. We also encourage people to take the food that they can’t eat right away in containers to their homes. But we contribute to some of the waste and should do better,” he added. ■

Healthy fasting

J

ishy Seby, diet consultant at Kims Oman Hospital, warned against overeating and breaking fast with unhealthy food to avoid a trip to hospital. First-time fasters and children should resist the urge to feast on unhealthy food, which can become a habit. According to Seby, fruits, vegetables and low-fat foods should be the main source of energy for those fasting. She said: “This year fasting becomes tougher as the holy month falls during the hot, long days of June. Main concept is that the food you have at suhoor should stay in your stomach longer. “The diet during Ramadan should not differ from the normal balanced diet and it should be as simple as possible. It should include all five food groups (cereals, pulses, meat and fish, diary and fats). “Overeating after iftar and suhoor can not only harm the body but also interfere with a person’s spiritual growth during the month, causing fatigue, sleepiness and lethargy.” Fasting during the holy month can improve health but the correct diet is not always followed, and usually food habits change to overeating carbohydrates. However, according to Seby, metabolic function slows down during fasting. “Body and dietary fat is utilised during this period. People who are overweight can reduce their weight by healthy fasting; others can maintain their weight also. Overeating or feasting should be avoided during iftar, dinner or suhoor,” she said. Seby also advised those fasting to drink sufficient water between iftar and suhoor. “Drink sufficient water between iftar and suhoor to avoid dehydration during fasting. Avoid caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee and cola. These drinks need to be reduced one week prior to fasting. This helps to reduce headache during fasting. After dinner it is always good to engage in light exercise like stretching or walking which aids in digestion.”

THINK ABOUT YOUR FELLOW MUSLIM, ESPECIALLY THE ONE WHO GOES WITHOUT FOOD THIS RAMADAN AND THINK YOURSELF LUCKY YOU HAVE MONEY TO BUY FOOD WHERE HE DOES NOT

Dos and don’ts about fasting Don’t skip meals

Avoid skipping meals, especially suhoor. Eating slow carbs as you wake up will give you lasting energy throughout the day. If you don’t have a large appetite early in the morning, a glass of milk, a few nuts and dates are recommended. For those who eat heavier meals in the morning, wheat kaboos with hummus or chicken is ideal. Remember to drink at least two to three glasses of water before you begin fasting to avoid feeling dehydrated during the fasting hours..

Go slow when you break your fast

Coconut-coated dates with laban, avocado juice with fruits or dried fruit or soups are the perfect choice of foods when you break your fast. A good mix of carbs, proteins, fruits and vegetables should be included in your meals.

Load up on B complex vitamins

Having a B complex vitamin like neurobion at suhoor has shown to keep energy levels up during the fasting period.

Foods to be avoided

Fasting can often increase gastric acidity levels in the stomach, causing a burning feeling and heaviness in the stomach. This experience can be avoided by eating foods rich in fibre. It’s also important to avoid fried foods, very spicy foods, salty foods and foods containing too much sugar.

What to drink

Drinks with high caffeine content (coffee, tea, chocolate, sodas and even decaffeinated teas and coffees) should be avoided. Caffeine percolates calcium from your system which makes you feel less full all the time. Avoid drinking tea at suhoor as tea increases salt excretion in the urine, which is needed for your body during fasting. The ideal beverage would be water, or if you’re feeling more dehydrated than usual, try adding a slice of lime, strawberries or even mint to your glass of water.

Work out (mildly)

Light physical activity is also recommended and will keep your body supple and fit.

TRAIL

DOWNHILL HERO RENÉ WILDHABER ENJOYED AN UPHILL EXPERIENCE IN SALALAH BLAZING THE TRAIL OF THE CAMELS. NISHAD PADIYARATH MEETS THE SWISS ADVENTURER TO SHARE THE THRILLS AND SPILLS

O

ne of the most memorable and captivating experiences you can have in Oman is to ride through the rippling, windswept desert on camelback and camp out under the stars. Mountain bike Enduro prodigy René Wildhaber got the same kick, but not out of

028

MAY 24 - 30 / ISSUE 521

riding a camel and not in the desert. He was actually in the back of the cam-els 10 hours a day for a complete week. Every year when the Khareef season sets in, camels wander around the green patches created by the incessant rain in Salalah. It was here that the Swiss mountain bike Enduro rider followed in the foot-steps of the camels. He shadowed the camels on some of the most unique routes the region has to offer — in the stunning and green Salalah, a city which lies only a few hundred

kilometres from the Empty Quarter. Acknowledging that it was not the way he envisioned Salalah, Wild-haber said: “I expected a desert, only sand, but then I found (green) mountains here and it’s really nice, like at home but without snow.” What fascinated Wildhaber the most as he set out to explore Salalah was the camels — the ship of the desert. Not a common sight in his native Switzerland, so he decided to track their trails. With the task of designing the trail left

up to the camels’ devices, Rene’s ride was laden with challenges, because what sometimes looked like an easy trail turned difficult with unforeseen bends and twists. “On the trails here, you see a good variation of inclination, so the camels sometimes like to walk steep, and sometimes they go flat. They are the trail builders here,” he adds. René rode 7km nearly 10 hours a day in average temperature of 26°C during the week-long adventure. “You never know what you get around the next corner, so you have to look forward and be awake,” says Wildhaber. Wildhaber’s routes were not always approachable by car so at times he had to hike the mountains to reach the right spot. Riding in such areas clearly meant he needed energy to stay strong throughout the long day. The winning diet combination for him was: carb-rich bread, potatoes, beans and protein and water mixed with Red Bull. On choosing Salalah for the project, Wildhaber said: “It was the fact that mother nature herself, with the help of the camels, was what shaped my route, rendering the whole process a uniqueness rarely found elsewhere.” ■

amadan is a warm period of time that helps us spiritually awaken and mentally and physically revamp ourselves. Its’ also a time to bond well: family members gather twice a day to eat, sharing quality time and spiritual moments. But not all are privileged to sit with their family around a table and break their fast. Away from home, family and friends, many expatriates who live and work in Oman are missing the Ramadan warmth. Ramadan, generally speaking, is a time when life slows down a lot — but there are aspects that assume a greater pace during Ramdan than ever before, and if you want to get a taste of this hustle and bustle you only need to spend an hour or so in a traditional souq. That’s the reason last weekend I stopped by Souq Barka: to get a glimpse of life in Ramadan. It was business unusual. Tailors rushed to work and got busy with their job as soon as they were in at their workplaces to ensure they delivered the finished pieces to the customers on the promised dates. Merchants were busy taking stock and stocking up on things that were in great demand. Expatriate labourers were hooked into their mobile phones, chatting with their near and dear ones back home about fasting and iftar. The warmth that pervaded everywhere got me ready to do my

job. Soon my camera panned out on an Indian tailor who was trying his best to sell a white fabric to a bunch of people who I believe were shopping for Eid dishdasha. His sales pitch was impressive: the guys whipped out their wallets and counted the riyals as the man clicked the scissors with a smile. Mannequins have always fascinated me. They catch my attention and make me spend a bit of time with them. But this one at the souq grabbed my eyes for all the wrong reasons. Clothed in a bright coloured dishdasha, the blue-eyed blonde sort of looked funny to me. I strolled deeper into the souq and was soon wondering what a young man, maybe in his early twenties, was so anxious about. He was shopping with a couple of his friends but his mind was definitely wandering somewhere else. He was checking out his phone so frequently that it looked as if he was doing some neck exercise. The vegetable seller at a corner shop greeted me with a warm smile. I smiled back, taking a few clicks. As I was on the way back to my car after having framed quite a lot of interesting moments, I spotted a delivery boy riding a cycle. He reminded me of India’s famous Dabbawala, the amazing lunchbox delivery and return system in Mumbai. Isn’t it feasible to run something similar in Muscat?

CARS ADVENTURES

T

TO YOTA C A M RY H Y B R I D

When petrol is burning deeper holes in our wallets hybrids should define our way forward. Alvin Thomas gets riyal-istic about the Camry-ness of things: style and substance, with fuel frugality

here are many reasons to buy a hybrid vehicle. But until recently none of those reasons ever made sense to the average car shopper from the Middle East. Matters such as taking the environment into consideration with one’s car merely existed with posts on social media platforms, while the distance one’s car covered over a tank of fuel seemed like a worry for another day. Alas! The day has come. Petrol, as you know, is turning out to be an expensive commodity – and we’ve now come to a point where every baiza counts, literally. That’s where the Camry Hybrid comes in to save the day. If you thought that Toyota was only aiming to pump out a gas-guzzling V6 variant into the country, then think again. They’ve brought out one of the most frugal mid-size sedans in the world – and we couldn’t fault the timing of its arrival either. For most parts the Camry looks much like its other siblings from the same pond. The eight-generation skin is worn from head to toe. For instance, there’s a

034

MAY 24 - 30 / ISSUE 521

two-piece grille upfront that now nestles the Toyota emblem, while the air intake vents take up a greater portion of the bumper. Meanwhile, the side profile is quite handsome, too. The windows are large and sizeable, and aren’t intended to hide the sedan-like proportions of the car. On the other hand, the chiselled side mirrors, the bevelled door line and the machine-polished alloys make their way to the hybrid variant too. Where things become a bit different, or shall we say, apparent, is when you move over to the rear of the car. Sitting prominently – and proudly – on the corner is the ‘Hybrid’ badge, that is intended to draw the line between you and the average car buyer from Oman. Underneath the skin lies a 2.5-litre in-line fourcylinder engine that is coupled with an electric motor that aims to provide the best mileage at any given situation and with the least amount of carbon emissions. We found this to be incredibly handy when driving in city traffic. We’ve grown to love Toyota’s hybrid systems over the years (especially the one in the Prius), and the new layout we experienced in the Camry was no different either. Of course, where it does score is in performance. Our tester came pumping an impressive 208HP (combined output: motor + engine) and was mated to a quick-witted electrically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT). In addition to the 2.5L dynamic force engine, the car boasts of an electric motor coupled with a nickel-metal hydride type hybrid battery. While that puts the Camry into a whole new territory of powerful hybrid sedans, it also returned 22km of drive per litre during our hot weather

highway test. This also makes the Camry Hybrid the most efficient mid-size sedan we’ve ever roadtested. The CVT does a great job in keeping the engine revolutions to a minimum when you’re driving normally. But, as is characteristic with cars equipped with CVTs, we did come across a little bit of drone when we trashed the pedal to the metal. Albeit, come to think of it now, an acceleration test of this car was completely redundant, given that the car will most likely spend its time cruising along the highways and quietly prowling around cities. During normal driving, we didn’t find it hard to notice the brake regeneration working in tandem with the batteries to keep them charged always. Upon leaving the accelerator pedal, there’s a whiff of friction that can

We didn’t find the batteries to particularly weigh the car down; to be honest, it felt just as agile as the V6 variant we had tested earlier. Body roll, while existent, was kept to normal levels and wind and road noise were also doled down to a minimum. Moving inside, you’ll find that the Camry Hybrid maintains the aura of the sportier variant. Either way, it’s a great way to keep yourself company during long drives, and who knows, maybe, you could also try beat your own scores at efficient driving. Moving on, the seats are comfortable and what you’d normally find in any other Camry. They offer adequate amounts of side bolstering and lumbar, and are eight-way adjustable. I also found them to be very compliant during long journeys.

Rear space has always been the Camry’s forte – and it keeps the trend going. Leg and head room is in plentiful, and the large windows will ensure that passengers don’t feel claustrophobic at any point. As is expected from a large sedan, the boot space is excellent, too. With its rear seats in position, it offers a large cargo area. The Camry Hybrid was a welcoming addition to Toyota’s lineup in Oman, to be completely unbiased. But, it’s a change we foresaw – although its coming does ring a few bells in the automotive industry in the region. And the other contenders in this class should watch its back because not only has Toyota managed to wrap up an efficient car in a striking body; it’s a vehicle that may very well set the trend for hybrid cars in motion in the Middle East. That we’ll have to wait and see.

Nirmal Raj recommends

AMSTERDAM T

here are so many things to do in Amsterdam that you might need a couple of visits to completely discover the place. The capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in Europe. With its amazing museums, abundant theatres, entertainment venues, stunning canals and picturesque locales, Amsterdam is a paradise of visitors. With more than 800 years of history to know about, Amsterdam is rich with captivating sights. From ancient churches to magnificent buildings, quaint courtyards, charming cobbled streets and world-famous canals there is so much to discover in Amsterdam. Amsterdam houses an assortment of world-famous museums. Without checking out the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum or Stedelijk Museum your trip to the fascinating place is incomplete. The capital city is also known for its historic homes and scenic bridges that link the city’s 90 islands, eight of them old wooden bascule bridges, including the most frequently photographed Magere Brug (Mager Bridge). The ANNE F R striking canal network, prolific history and vivacious cultural scene make Amsterdam HOLOC ANK HOUSE A AUST M N one of the world’s most exceptional tourist destinations. In less than 30 minutes USEUM D from Amsterdam, you will find excellent shopping cities like Haarlem, the majestic windmills at Zaanse Schans, the famous tulip fields in and around the Keukenhof, and historic towns like Edam and Volendam. You can explore Amsterdam easily by public transport, with most destinations being accessible by train or bus. According to www.iamsterdam.com, the city’s official website, there are over 800,000 bicycles in Amsterdam. It says cycling in Amsterdam is a way of life, made easier by the city’s unbeatable network of cycle routes and flat landscape. Wandering into the Jordaan - the city’s most charming neighbourhood - feels like stepping back in time. Jordaan’s narrow streets and quaint buildings are sprinkled with independent art galleries, antiques shops, courtyard gardens and restaurants. You must also visit Museumplein, the cultural centre of Amsterdam. The leafy 19th century district of Oud-Zuid is an art lover’s utopia, and the open square between the buildings throbs with activity all day. Make sure to check out Amsterdam’s Unesco-protected canal belt which is the ideal picture-postcard vision of Amsterdam, and an extraordinarily pretty sight by both day and night. When in Amsterdam how can you forget the tulips? The most famous place to buy beautiful blooms and bulbs in Amsterdam is the Bloemenmarkt - the world’s only floating flower TRAATJES E NEGEN S D market which lines the Singel with colourful flower stalls. You can also head out of the city to explore the diverse attractions of the surrounding area. Amsterdam has a mild climate and therefore summers are generally warm with occasional colder periods, while winters are relatively cold with rain, wind and some snow. The best time to visit Amsterdam is between May to September. As for accommodation, you will find all kinds to suit any budget.

My favourite place Floating down Amsterdam’s canals is one of the most memorable ways to discover the city’s sights and attractions. Everything in Amsterdam seems even more enchanting when viewed from a boat.

Highlights

Travel through time, history and fashion as you explore the impressive collection of handbags and accessories at the Museum of Bags and Purses. As the world’s only museum with such an extensive and specialised collection, it tells the story of the humble handbag from the late Middle Ages to the present day.

Lowlights Amsterdam can get very cold in December and January. Souvenirs There are a number of excellent stores that offer a wide variety of cheese. Pick up tulip bulbs that can be taken

home and planted. Originally a shoe worn by farmers working in the field, the clogs can be spotted in every souvenir shop in Amsterdam. Amsterdam by Ewout Huibers, a book full of stunning Amsterdam photographs, is a great souvenir to pick. For the sweet-toothed ones, check out stroopwafels (waffle cookies), roomboter babbelaars, (butter candy), appelstroop (apple syrup), hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles), among others.

Ahmed Naji Arrar tries to conquer territories and tweak monstrous mechs in the times of war and farming

I

t is the 1920s, Eastern Europe. Nations battle for reputation and domination. Nordics, Rusivets, Polonia, Saxons and Crimea, each with a unique set of abilities, try to build the most powerful economy by producing resources, coins, popularity, building structures while maintaining weaponry through enlisting recruits, upgrading technologies and deploying 'mechs', the steamoperated heavy war machines. Your goal is to expand across the board and take control of the hexes in this one of the most-hyped board games of all time. Each hex has its own terrain: Forests produce wood required for building, tundra hexes produce oil required for your technology advancement, mountains hold iron that allow you to release mechs, and farms — obviously — supply food to help you enlist recruits. Your movement will be restricted by lakes and rivers which are the game's natural barriers. The centre hex is a factory that grants

more production options for players who reach there. But wait, although the motives are individual, goals are global. Personal objectives might lead you to engage in war with other players, or constantly tweaking your strategy to adapt with the new trends. All players through both the faction and technology boards will try to build their strategy to gain as much achievement as possible. Once a player completes six out of 10 possible achievements (personal or common), each represented by a star on the triumph track, the game will end and the scoring phase begins. Everything counts: your coins, popularity, hexes, resources, structures and

bonuses will identify the player with the highest points, the winner. The game's mechanics are just genius, and the misty artwork is breathtaking and has definitely contributed to making it one of the greatest masterpieces ever made in the history of board games. The game is really well worth the hype we get to hear about it.

Glow with

YOGHURT

The creamy, yummy delight is a powerhouse of protein and packed with probiotics. It’s just as great to give the skin the glow you love when used externally, says Gayathri Das

C

urd or yoghurt is available in plenty in every kitchen. Did you know curd can do amazing things to your skin? When consumed regularly curd does incredibly beneficial things to your body, and it gives wonderful results when used externally.

Night pack Mix one teaspoon of yoghurt with one capsule of vitamin E oil. You may add to it a few drops of tea tree oil if your face has pimples. Apply this mask on your face with cotton balls. Wash it out with cold water after 15 minutes. This mask can be used daily. Your skin will instantly feel smooth and clean, like yoghurt, and the treatment is especially good for dry and dull skin. You can skip your night moisturiser as yoghurt and vitamin E oil act as a natural moisturiser keeping your skin well hydrated. 042

MAY 24 - 30 / ISSUE 521

Gradually with regular use you can find your skin glowing without any makeup. The mask can be used below your eyes to get rid of dark circles. The lactic acid present in yoghurt will help hydrate the skin and remove the tired look from your eyes. The mask helps remove the bacteria causing acne and pimples. The zinc in yoghurt reduces skin inflammations and the probiotics destroy the bad bacteria. Yoghurt works as a skin exfoliant as well, helping the cells to renew faster. Vitamin E oil is both a nutrient and an anti-oxidant. This helps to neutralise free radicals which tend to damage the cells. The skin get nourished from inside. Vitamin E increases collagen production responsible for maintaining skin elasticity. This reduces the fine lines and wrinkles which are the dreaded signs of ageing. Vitamin E is a soluble nutrient and works on dry and damaged skin restoring lost moisture.

MIND YOUR MEALS

A high-fat meal to meet your craving is all right once in a while but when you indulge in such pleasures frequently you may be cooking up trouble, warns Gayathri Das

Y

our intake of even one fat meal — even a high-fat milk shake — a day may be a step closer to heart disease. High fat and calorie may fasten the transformation of healthy red blood cells into small, weak cells which is the first step to cardio-vascular issues. A double layered pizza, a full-fat jumbo burger or even a milkshake with whole milk, whipping cream and ice cream can wreck your health. The risks are graver when you indulge in such pleasures regularly. Gradually you tend to

be less active and show mood swings, restlessness, less concentration at work, etc. You get obese after a while and you will then be more prone than before to heart issues. This is not to suggest you completely stay away from pleasing your taste buds. If you crave a fat meal, just go ahead and enjoy it, maybe at the weekend — but you should not follow it up with another round of binge eating the next day, and the next... Give it a break; keep away from such treats for a couple weeks at least. Also, cut down on your sugar intakes. Jaggery is a safer alternative to white sugar. MAY 24 - 30 / ISSUE 521
