he spirit of Ramadan has well and truly begun in the Sultanate. The Holy Month is a time for giving and sharing, helping the less fortunate, for reflection and quality time spent with family and friends. THE VOICE OF OMAN EMILY SHOTTER ON BRINGING A NEW CAT HOME

correspondence DEBATE OF THE WEEK WE ASKED: How have you protected your devices from last weekend’s global cyberattack on more than 100 countries, including Oman?

B

ringing a new cat or kitten home can seem daunting but there are a few simple tips that will see your new furry family member settle in quickly. When your new cat arrives, put them in a separate room for a day or two to let them get comfortable with their new surroundings. Keep litter away from food and keep water away from both as cats don’t like their water to be right next to their food bowls. After a day or two, let them slowly and quietly explore the rest of the house. Keep the litter tray and food in the same place to begin with so they have a safe place to retreat to if they feel uncomfortable. In time, you can move both but do so slowly so the cat is not lost finding their tray or supplies. You’ll be amazed how quickly they learn, explore and become part of your family. If your cat is blind or has other special needs, you’ll need to slow down this process and gradually move the litter box and food/water. A blind cat will learn new things quickly but for their basics, they will like familiarity, so edge the litter box a few feet each day, until it is where you want it. The other golden rule with blind cats is to keep furniture and other things in the same place. They “map” their surroundings so it is important not to move that sofa or leave things lying around for them to trip over or run into. Use noise to help them along. Tapping on items or the ground can help them localise and, of course, lots of toys with bells or that make a noise will keep them happy and entertained.

The Ransomeware Virus attack is the biggest attack to date. It is also called “Wanna Cry”. This virus encrypts all the files and sets a password for them. Then it asks for a huge voluminous amount of currency to give you the password that will decrypt your files. Prevention is always better than cure. There are three ways to protect yourself from the cyber attack: Back up, Update and Refrain. Back up all your data on a regular basis and scan the system offline. Update your device and antivirus program with the latest definition and PC with latest version of its operating system. Refrain from fake websites, online shopping, unsafe and suspicious links, names that are unusually spelt, malicious links on social media and emails and their attachments from unknown sources. Just in case you get infected by this malware and get a ransom call, do not panic and pay immediately. Get in touch with the country’s cyber cell cop. Oman’s police and Intelligence service is the best. They will leave no stone unturned to help you.

RASU JOHN

VIt’s on track to be one of the biggest recorded ransomware attacks ever, with tens of thousands of infected computers in nearly 100 countries. Ransomware prevention is good. Protection is better. Unfortunately, ransomware protection is not always effective. As a prime recovery plan an isolated, up-to-date backup of data can be

taken and by having up-to-date data backups the recovery and all traces of the ransomware infection can be erased. Also awareness and information was circulated, requesting family, friends and colleagues not to open any unknown mails with attachments from unknown users and not to download any software from the internet. As a precaution we also avoided online banking transactions, visiting anonymous links. We also stayed away from connecting to untrusted wireless networks. Stay safe, Stay secure and stay up-to-date.

MOHAN ANANDAN

Although it is never going to be easier to escape cyber criminals, as evidenced again from the latest worldwide attacks on computer devices, we can secure ourselves by taking some precautionary measures. We escaped unhurt by virtue of having a licensed version of the operating system, enabling automatic upgrades and also having a licensed anti-virus and malware software. We do not open attachments from unknown contacts and suspicious ones from known contacts either. We also block spam mails and unknown contacts and never follow any link provided in the mails. Also, we do not let social media sites or e-mail sites lie idle when not in use and ensure that the system is shut down promptly. With these measures, one can minimise the attack to a large extent.

SYED BOKHARI

Last week’s global cyber attack has no doubt been a matter of real concern about the safety

of our precious devices. In these cases we must reduce our dependence on desktop computers, laptops and cell phones on a regular basis by updating our critical software. By not doing so we are leaving our doors and windows open and thereby inviting a cyber attack. We should always opt for updating and installing the applications through the authorised ways and leave aside the unknown ways. We should make sure to have the recent version of the app running and get rid of the unused idle apps that are running in the background because they have security vulnerabilities that are discovered later. Our passwords should be strong enough to face the onslaught of the cyber attack in our accounts and keep ourselves signed out when not in use. Finally our operating systems should be upgraded if they are old. That’s what we can do to some extent to protect our devices from any cyber attack.

Activating a Windows fire wall; 9. Updating licensed anti-virus software; 11. Not installing cracked software. These measures provided a perfect barrier to my devices, protecting them from the last week’s cyber attack.

New Debate: What are your top tips on staying healthy during the long fasting hours of Ramadan this year? Share your view with us and you could be in with a chance of winning dinner for two.

To protect personal devices from any cyber attack and computer hackers, I followed what the security company Bitdefender suggests for protecting laptops, desktops, and tablets and these are also my suggestions. First, disable your computer’s Server Message Block service. Second, back up your data onto an offline hard drive. Third, install all Windows updates. Fourth, avoid downloading unnecessary applications and avoid opening files and emails from unknown sources. Fifth, choose a password that is difficult for the hackers to guess and memorise it by heart. Sixth, use a reputable security software to prevent attacks in the future. Most importantly, when you are online, always value your own privacy, do not share personal or private information, and “think before you click”.

DR RAO BHASKARA SUDDAPALLI

I followed a few simple time tested measures like 1. Not opening files/ attachments from unknown email sources; 2. Not getting tempted to open even emails from unknown sources; 3. Not using unknown and alien web sites; 4. Not downloading files from unknown sources; 5. Checking email id of sender if it is not a spoofed email; 5. Running a Windows update on systems; 6. Running free anti-virus software for windows 7. Not clicking questionable links; 8. Not downloading an app that is not verified by official stores; 8.

oes your work mandate you to work outdoors? If so, it’s important to note that you have to take a mid-day break from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The break, which is mandatory, bans any work under direct sunlight between the aforementioned hours, and will come into effect from June 1 and extend until August 31, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Manpower (MoM), last Sunday (May 21). The MoM has also urged all companies to follow the mid-day break rule; failing to do so will result in fines being levied on violators. “This ministerial decision was put in place to protect workers from the scorching heat during the summer,” an official at MoM was quoted as

saying by local daily, Times of Oman. He added that a special team had been designated to catch anyone found violating the orders. Violations can be reported at 8007 7000. The mid-day break is announced every year in accordance with Article 16 of the Oman Labour Law for occupational safety and health regulations. Robert Antony, an electrical engineer based in Muscat, told Y: “My team and I will be in the office during these hours. However, our workforce will be given time off until 3.30pm as per the Ministry’s decision. “We respect the decision. It is getting hotter by the day, and we admire the Government’s role in supporting all our staff members,” he added.

Here Alone

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul When I was a kid, many children’s films morphed into movie classics that any adult or subsequent generation could enjoy. The Railway Children, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and, later on, E.T the Extra-Terrestrial had us sat together, swatting each other’s hands away as we reached for the popcorn while tapping into the themes of innocence and experience that we all share. This is not one of those movies. Never has an appendage to a movie title been so appropriate. Never have younger cinemagoers been so patronised, talked down to and generally treated like infants. In the original, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the protagonist Greg is desperate to be liked by his classmates. The only trouble is he’s not really a “wimp” as such but a spoilt, cocky little pest who can’t even be nice to the one boy willing to be his

friend. Why we are supposed to derive any enjoyment from constantly seeing him fail to make any progress is beyond me. In this, Greg (Jason Drucker) finds out his family is going on a road trip to see his grandmother on her 90th birthday, The thought of being cooped up in an RV for days is not his recipe for a good time. But when Greg hears that his favourite video game YouTuber Mac Digby (Joshua Hoover) is hosting a video game seminar at a venue near his grandmother’s home, he hatches a plan to duck out of the family bash. And that’s when the trouble starts. He and his family encounter a series of toe-curling calamities and mishaps that, while not entirely implausible, are just jaw-droppingly ineffective in inducing any laughs. Avoid. Review by Kevin McIndoe

and stay sane. The zombie thing has been done so many times it’s almost tedious. However, in this; unimaginable loss, pain, isolation and desperation are themes competently handled; and combine to make for a solid, taut, well-acted, decently paced psychological thriller that treats its audience like adults. Well worth a look.

Berlin Syndrome

After an epidemic outbreak that is turning people into zombies, Ann (Lucy Walters), her husband Jason and their baby daughter flee into the forest where Jason was raised. When her loved ones die, Ann has to find the strength both to carry on and face up to an almost insurmountable battle just to survive,

While on holiday in Berlin, Australian journalist Clare (Teresa Palmer) meets Andi (Max Riemelt), a charismatic young man to whom she takes a shine. What appears to be a holiday romance takes an unexpected and sinister turn when Clare finds herself locked in Andi’s apartment. Well, it could happen to anyone. Except that Andi has no intention of letting her go. Ever. In this, once again, our initial perceptions of what people are get a thorough going over. Initially, it’s Clare who seems a bit dippy while Andi seems to be an urbane, totally together man-abouttown. It’s another psychological thriller with depth: edgy, sinister, and often riveting.

Long View SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING After dipping his toe into what is to be his calling (in Captain America: Civil War) Peter Parker/SpiderMan starts off his career as the webbed wonderman while trying to balance his high school routine. I haven’t managed to see a preview DVD of this (once again). I’m not a Marvel fan and frankly have lost track of which superhero has done what, when and as part of which group. For my generation, The Avengers was always the classic British detective show of the 1960s. And I’m quite sure the lithe and lethal Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) could see off any number of Spider-Man’s foes, and would do so with minimal fuss or fanfare. Oman Release Date: July 6

AL KHIRAN

ALVIN THOMAS FINDS A PICTURESQUE VILLAGE ON THE CUSP OF CHANGE, BUT WHICH STILL RETAINS ITS CHARM IN AN EVER-CHANGING WORLD 032

MAY 25 - 31 / ISSUE 472

The drop is considerable, at the very least a few hundred metres so it is best to stay within a safe distance. That aside, the viewpoint is arguably one of the most picturesque locations in the country. From the top you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful Arabian Sea and even the typical Omani-looking Majlis al Shura building. We spent a few hours clicking photos and screaming at the top of our voices into the horizon to try to create an echo. We may be adults now but we still feel like the same five year olds we once were. In any case, we proceeded to the village of Al Khiran. Again, it is a straightforward drive and therefore there is no way for you to lose your way. A few metres down the lane, you will find the large, blue body of water on your left, which signifies that you have reached Al Khiran. It must be noted that if you are up for a spot of diving or speed boating, you can always head away from the road between Qantab and Sifah towards the crystal-clear waters. But our aim was not to go diving but rather to spend some time near the local villagers and to get to know their opinions on the fast-changing face of their village, and perhaps make a few friends. Today, the village has become a focal point for visitors heading to the Al Sifah area but not many stop by to interact with the villagers. So, the moment I got out of the car with my camera, I was approached by a couple of young teenagers (Sami and Muhanned) who asked (in Arabic) if I was a photographer. Despite not knowing the language, I could still figure out (vaguely) what the youngster was trying to say. Soon, we were joined by their friends. They offered us Omani halwa and Pepsi. It was an odd combination but it still hit the spot. Jijin particularly seemed to take a shine towards it. They then gave us a tour of their village: it is a fairly small, and comprised only 20-odd houses. A few are made of stone but the rest are comparatively newer. Amenities are scarce but there’s still a school and a small grocery store nearby. And that’s when it struck me: these people are adapting to the changes happening around them while still maintaining their lifestyle. Today, the village sees hundreds of cars drive past, with some even littering from their windows as they go by. But these villagers do everything they can to keep their village as pristine as possible and without causing any disruption for anyone. I asked Sami, who understood Hindi: “What will you do if some company sets up a hotel here?”

He said: “We will move. Allah has made this world big enough for everyone to survive. We will be happy to accept anything. Our fate lies in his hands, and I know that he gives us only what he believes is right for us.” I then asked the group of friends to pose for a picture. However, they were too shy, and so, we couldn’t get them to pose. That, coupled with the dying light, meant that we had to wrap our shoot and head for home. But overall, I have to say that this has been one of my favourite Destinations. It really gave me a taste of what Oman stands for: humble and welcoming people who have nothing but love for one another, and above all, the will to keep going no matter what.

HOW TO GET THERE

TRAVEL GUIDE

The poetry of earth is never dead.” These are the opening lines from the ever-so-beautiful sonnet On the Grasshopper and Cricket by the English Romantic poet John Keats. There is no denying those words are self-explanatory. But of late, I have been finding it hard to come to relate to those words, thanks to the many development projects taking over many of the world’s prime locations, and Oman is no exception. A prime example of that would be my Destination trip to the humble beach of Qantab last week, during which I was shocked to see the state of the once sought-after sands now being restricted to a very small area. And while new projects are good for our beloved country, I find it hard to digest that we are modernising when we should be preserving the work of Mother Nature. Of course, that’s just my opinion. So this week, I decided to escape from the grip of our city and go on a soul-seeking mission to understand the value of human bonding – another long-lost value in today’s fast-paced world. My target location was the village of Al Khiran, and accompanying me were my brothers Allen and Jijin, both of whom were surprisingly excited despite it being a Friday. The drive to Al Khiran is quite a long one but still worth it if you have the right company. Jijin took control of the wheel as I got ready to click photos of whatever I saw. Allen was our designated DJ, and soon, we were having an impromptu karaoke session to our favourite singers in pop (Eminem, TheWeeknd, Drake and many more). This meant I missed quite a lot of photo opportunities on our way up to the village. However, half-way to our destination, we stopped by the “Bustan viewpoint”, en route to the village of Bustan and atop one of the mountains. There are no markings that point towards it but people usually flock there to camp or even sit down and chat. Another feature about this spot is that you can walk right up to the tip of the mountain to observe the surroundings. Of course, this is extremely dangerous, and I wouldn’t urge anybody to go right up to the edge. Since you’re high up in the mountains, the cross winds are also quite strong, and that could lead to you losing your footing and falling.

From Hamriyah, take Yiti street and travel southeast for around 17km. Exit right and stay on this road all the way to Al Khiran.

FIRST DRIVE

CARS ADVENTURES

Photos: Elvis John Ferrao

Stunning, sleek and stylish with an enviable command of the road, the British marque has still got it, says Y’s Alvin Thomas

T

he British have always been pioneers in building two-door sports cars. That is until the late 1980s at least, when British Leyland knocked out brilliant lightweight sports cars that could kick dust on flamboyant Italian supercars and even power-packed German sedans. The MG MGB, Lotus Elan, Jaguar E-Type, AustinHealey Sprite and the Triumph Spitfire all typify the golden era of the British motor industry. They were so good on the road (and track) that people didn’t really know why they hadn’t even invested in anything more than a roadster. That is, obviously, until it broke down in the middle of the road in a cloud of its own smoke. Reliability was a luxury unknown to many British roadster owners, and soon – and rather inevitably – they all switched to more reliable and steadfast roadsters from Japan. The Mazda MX-5, the Nissan 240SX and the Toyota MR2 are all examples of what the British roadster should always have been – a reliable machine with loads of charisma. Today, the British roadster is limited to just a few astronomically priced TVRs, Aston Martins, Morgans and Eagles. But wait: we have another contender and you know what? It may be just what the doctor ordered. It’s the Jaguar F-Type. And it’s affordable, small, quick, nimble and above all, very (very!) handsome. It has all the makings of the perfect roadster, then. From the outside, there’s no telling that the F-Type is actually even moderately related to the now defunct XK. The latter could be classified as a prettylooking muscle car at best and, therefore, didn’t quite ring the bells of true fans of the British roadster. But you see, the F-Type is then Britain’s only

034

MAY 25 - 31 / ISSUE 472

answer to the Japanese and the Germans. Little wonder then that it has since become the UK’s standard bearer. Don’t get me wrong: The F-Type isn’t in any way entering the battlefield as an underdog and that is evident from the moment you set eyes on the car. My tester F-Type V6 convertible may have been finished only in white but it is still the most dramaticlooking machine that I have seen in an awfully long time. The blacked-out vents, slotted intakes in the bumper and the almost-oval shaped grille give the car its character. Apart from that, the swooping headlamps resemble (metaphorically) the neatly drawn eyes of a supermodel. Move to the rear and I assure you that your jaw will drop. The sharp tail lights swoop over more than it should (all for the better) and there is a set of “active” dualexhausts in the middle. There’s also a retractable rear spoiler that will activate itself depending on the speed at which you are driving. The Jaguar E-Type (1961-75) touches are evident on the newcomer. Even the bonnet opens outwards from the windscreen (like the E-Type did), as opposed to what you would find on a regular car. The F-Type’s interior is unlike that of the Jags of old, although all new cars from the stable do come with this interior now. It is a driver-centric cabin, as is clear when you actually spot the large handle on the passenger side of the centre console – possibly to keep him or her planted while you’re busy scaring the living lights out of him or her. There’s a lot of leather inside, and everything feels well put together. Much

of the interior is covered in soft-touch materials, and you will only spot hard plastics in places where you don’t touch during conventional driving. The dashboard, on the other hand, is a mixture of leather, aluminium and stitched leatherette that extend all the way on the center console and the doors. There’s adequate space for two adults, and there’s much more space inside than even Porsche’s Boxster. Sadly, storage spots are scarce, and you will be limited to keeping large objects in the passenger side foot well. Of course, that’s a negligible niggle. As expected, the boot is a tad small, as it is primarily a storage compartment for that soft-top roof. It should be good enough to store a couple of backpacks but nothing else unless you actually remove the spare wheel from the boot. The seats are heavily bolstered but are still apt for long journeys. It is also easily adjustable, and comes with memory function should you lend your car to friends. The F-Type incorporates Jaguar’s infotainment screen, which provides you with most functions, including that of your air conditioner’s blower and ventilation. The system is easy to use but it isn’t the

Destination

P o s t c a r d s Fr o m

slickest of touchscreens that I have experienced. Still, there are large knobs for the AC and audio system functions. Another added treat is the central AC vents that electrically pop up from the dash on start-up. Gimmick? Yes. But, it really is cool. Now let us move on to the more interesting bits: the powertrain, the drive and above all, whether or not this is really a British sports car. Well, for starters, the F-Type houses, underneath its large hood, a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine, which can pump out a hefty 335hp and 450Nm of torque. Furthermore, the engine is mated to a fantastic eight-speed “ZF” gearbox that puts down power to the rear wheels. The power and torque delivery is instant if you have the car set in “Dynamic” or if you take control of the shifts using the steeringmounted paddles. There is also none of that annoying lag affiliated to turbocharging so you can easily hit the 100kph mark in under six seconds. I could consistently hit the mark in 5.5 seconds but I assume it would do better in the cooler months, as engines tend to work more efficiently then. The gearbox is snappy and the shifts are almost instantaneous. True, the Germans will claim that it is no dual-clutch set-up but I say that it still has to be the best single-clutch automatic currently in the business. The F-Type’s signature, however, is its exhaust note. Push the throttle and you will be treated to the most glorious natural sixcylinder engine note. The tuned exhaust also crackles and pops when you lift off from the throttle to let the cars around you know that you’re in town. It’s so loud that I am surprised that the car is considered street legal. Oh, and before I forget: you can also push the “exhaust” button on the side to open up valves and make the exhaust even louder! My F-Type tester came fitted with large 50cm alloys wrapped in 275/35 rear tyres. These tyres can keep the car planted on the road but I would be lying if I said that the car is not happy on its tail. The F-Type can run rings around its competition all day long. Oversteer will be your companion during your drives and you will

Y- F i

CARS

find yourself driving sliding ever so slightly into corners even if you’re not a particularly skilled driver. The electronic stability programme (ESP) isn’t too intrusive, which is probably why the car is so much fun to drive. Understeer exists in moderate levels, too but only if you push the car into a corner way too quick. All of this, however, means that you also have to be a bit cautious while pushing the car beyond a certain limit. In true Jaguar fashion, you can devour corners on the track while smoking your rear tyres but I wouldn’t advise you to tip the throttle while taking a corner on the highway. But, if you do, you will find that the brakes are more than adequate to counter your drift. They are easily some of the most powerful brakes fitted to a sports car. All four are ventilated discs, and provide exceptional stopping power. The thick-rimmed steering is very well-weighted – perfect almost – and is one of the sharpest steerings ever fitted to a sports car. The car changes direction swiftly and without any delay whatsoever. Granted, Jaguar could have provided a little more feel from the steering wheel. But with competitors such as Porsche adopting electric-steering setups, I can hardly complain about the F-Type. As a matter of fact, the British have definitely upped the game when it Jaguar F-Type V6 Specifications: Engine: 3.0-litre supercharged V6 Transmission: Eight-speed “ZF” automatic Horsepower: 335hp Torque: 450Nm Top speed: 260kph Rear-wheel drive Adaptive dampers Adaptive suspension Aluminium body shell Bi-xenon headlamps Steering-mounted paddles LED daytime running lights Eight-speaker audio system Power-adjustable seats Retractable soft top (12 seconds to fold) Cruise Control Active Exhaust Adjustable drive Modes

comes to driver involvement. And now that brings me to ask the question: is the Jaguar F-Type worthy of being crowned the best British sports car? Yes! And I wouldn’t mind saying that it could very well be one of the finest British sports cars to enter the market since the departure of the Leyland-built roadsters. This really is a case of “big things come in small packages”. And in this case, you’re getting a cool car that looks like a hornet and sounds like an AK-47.

THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS F

or such a small country, the Netherlands has certainly punched above its weight when it comes to legendary artists: Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Vermeer and Rubens to name but a few. And this year, The Hague, its capital city, celebrates the 100th anniversary of De Stijl (The Style), a Dutch artistic movement that embraced all things abstract and favoured the use of simple, basic colours. For all that, there are myriad old masters on show here in this, the third-biggest city in the Netherlands. Of course, The Hague is also famous as the home of the Dutch parliament and the base for the International Court of Justice. So it’s well-ordered and ultra-efficient. OK, it can’t offer the irresistible urban vibe of Amsterdam (an hour away by train) but that doesn’t make it dull. Far from it, it’s a city that’s cosmopolitan, cultural, artistic and even incorporates a charming seaside resort (Sheveningen) complete with pier, promenade, a lighthouse and a long, sandy beach. Of course, putting mayonnaise on your chips started in the Netherlands and it’s by far the most popular snack or street food. Unbelievably, some of the country’s top chefs have started opening chip shops but (naturally) only using the bestquality potatoes. Top art, magnificent museums, walkable canal-side streets, stylish and quirky shops, a seaside setting, more than 1,000 acres of open space; here is where you can take your pick, and do so at your own pace. But don’t forget those chips.

My favourite place

The Binnenhof, a collection of stately and elegant buildings in the centre of the city, which lie alongside the Hofvijver lake. The Binnenholf ’s courtyard is a wonderfully atmospheric area to stroll around as well as being the best place to base yourself for your ‘museum’ day. Today, the country’s venerable chambers of Parliament are based here and the 13th-century Knight’s Hall is a spectacular Gothic masterpiece that is still used for state functions today. The Museum Bredius displays a private collection of imposing Dutch paintings and resplendent silverware as they would have looked in their original 17th century setting. You can’t miss the magnificent Mauritshuis, an absolute gem of an art gallery that believes less is more. The art gallery, which was originally a residence (built in 1641) now houses around 300 art works but most are masterpieces. One standout is Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. On the north side of the Binnenhof is the Prison Gate Museum. It has been standing since 1296, was once a gatehouse and served as a prison for 400 years from the 15th century. The old torture chamber, complete with all manner of gruesome instruments, makes for a perfectly horrible (but enjoyable) visit.

Highlights

For getting your head around The Hague’s heritage, head to Friet District. It’s an old part of the city but one where hipsters are happy to shop, eat, drink coffee and hang out. Here, stores with in-house cafes abound, and here simply being a window-shopper makes for a relaxing couple of hours. And as we kicked off talking about art, and The Style, then the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is where to peruse the most prestigious works by The Style’s guru, Piet Mondrian. The display is chronological, and showcases the minimalism and use of primary colours that made his name. However, you won’t be spending too long wandering around the museums if the weather is fine so head west to Scheveningse Bosjes, a lush park in a forest that dates back to the Middle Ages. Here, the star attraction is Madurodam, a model village that depicts Dutch cities in miniature; the exhibits are extremely authentic in their detail. The kids will love ’em.

Lowlights None, but do take the usual precautions and protect your belongings and other valuables. Souvenirs The Hague has the biggest outdoor market in Europe, called simply The Hague Market. Since it was first

set up about 100 years ago, it has always had a reputation for unique artefacts, fabrics and trinkets. Here about 500 stalls offer everything from fruit, flowers, sweets, shoes, fish; you name it. The market is on Herman Coster Street between the areas of Transvaal and Schilderswijk, two of the city’s most multi-cultural hubs. Don’t miss it; the market is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Getting there

Etihad and KLM offer flights from Muscat (via Abu Dhabi) to Amsterdam. From there, it’s an hour’s train ride to The Hague.

Where to stay

For such an important city politically, there is no shortage of options from the main hotel chains. Check out the usual websites such as Booking.com, Hotels.com. Kayak or Trivago. There are some delightful boutique options too.

Most Valuable Games of All-Time Game CDs aren’t known to be collectibles. For instance: one couldn’t possibly imagine walking into a room full of games like one would do with vinyl records. But there are still a few games that are rare enough to be scented with myrrh yet good enough to be taken out, dusted and played now and then. Here are our picks for this week.

App of the Week

FALLOUT 3: SURVIVAL EDITION On paper, Fallout 3 should have been an absolute flop. A game set in a postapocalyptic world in the year 2277? That’s such a cliché. Still, what gave the game its leverage was the fact that the game – a successor to the Fallout and Fallout 2 games – took the designers 10 years to nail the release dates. And I can assure you that it was well worth the wait. The game takes you back to a world – which is now a Info Box wasteland – some 200 years after the great war between FALLOUT 3: SURVIVAL the US, China and Russia. The Fallout 3: Survival EDITION Edition was sold exclusively through Amazon.com and Original Cost: RO46.2 contained a number of collectible items including a Cost Today: metal Vault-Tec lunch box, Vault Boy Bobblehead, Art RO182 of Fallout 3 hardcover book, and The Making of Fallout 3 DVD.

YOGI Make yoga an integral part of your lifestyle with the Yoga Wake Up app. For starters, it has some of the calmest alarm tones. The app also gives you a few yoga sequences for you to practise after you wake up. Each sequence is a bit different from the other so it will also prepare you for the day. The app will also help you meditate, and offer you a few tips on staying calm and relaxed. Get it for free from iTunes.

MORTAL KOMBAT & MORTAL KOMBAT II Mortal Kombat was an integral part of my childhood: I grew up playing these games on my SEGA console and PC. Gamers will know: Mortal Kombat is one of the first – and possibly the pioneer – in arcade gaming. Needless to say: Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat II Info Box – the compilation release of the first two games in the MORTAL KOMBAT & Mortal Kombat series of arcade fighting games – is a very MORTAL KOMBAT II valuable purchase. It includes the PC port of the arcade Original Cost: version of each game (with accurate gameplay and RO138.7 graphics). Cost Today: We’ve heard that there’s a waiting list for gamers RO192 interested in buying this game. This means that there are also a lot of fakes doing the rounds so do be careful.

How to keep hair off your face

HALO! No, not the Beyoncé song! The Braid. This hairstyle is neat, tidy and trendy and just what you need for the summer. Here’s how to get it: 1 Create a side parting and pull a section of hair to one side. It should be thick enough to

separate into three strands. 2. Start plaiting this in section, alternating each side strand over the middle one. Remember to keep the strands pulled as this will result in a stronger braid and it won’t fall out. You can loosen it if you want a more relaxed look. 3. Continue the braid along the hairline towards your ear, pulling in more of your hair with each side strand as you go. Present all the hair along your hairline into the bottom of the braid and all the hair from the parting at the top. This may look difficult but just be patient! 4. Plait your main braid right to the bottom and secure this snag-free band. Repeat this on the other side of the head until you have two braided pig tails! 5. To create a “full-circle” effect at the back of your head, take the right braid across to the left and put this in place. Repeat this on the other side. Use plenty of Kirby grips to secure the

Summer Frizz

The deadly frizz is the most common problem in summer. Don’t worry! I have the solution for this. In extreme variations, the weather strips off the outermost layer of our hair, which makes it brittle, rough and prone. Fear not! Your Anti-Frizz leave-in cream is here. After blow-drying, and once your hair is completely dry, massage the anti-frizz cream in your hair. Avoid using any heating tools after this. To go for a more natural solution to this problem, try applying a mixture of almond oil and egg. Wait for 40 minutes and rinse. Do this once a week. Almond oil acts as a natural hair emollient and conditioner while the egg repairs damage in the hair shaft with its high protein content.

HEALTHY FASTING Nutritionist and clinical dietician Lama Al Naeli gives you her top 10 tips on fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadan

F

ollow these easy and healthy tips to stay fit during the Holy Month. The rule of thumb is to avoid gorging or “binge eating” at night. Studies show that gorging once a day is the fastest way to gain weight.

Tip 4

Tip 1

Limit your intake of sweets i.e. fried and fatty foods such as bread and baked items; salty food such as nuts and pickles, as well as canned and processed foods as these will make you thirsty during the fasting period.

As soon as you break your fast, concentrate on getting rehydrated by drinking plenty of water. This will help prevent overeating. Drink at least eight glasses of water in small quantities to avoid bloating.

Tip 2

Moderation is key. Having three meals is still important during the Holy Month: Iftar, a light evening snack, and Suhoor.

Tip 3

Break your fast with no more than two to three dates. Remember that dates are high in calories so moderation is required to maintain a healthy weight during Ramadan.

Tip 8

Start your Iftar meal with a warm soup as this will If you are a coffee drinker, try to reduce your comfort your stomach after a long day of fasting. IF TAR

It’s time to start thinking about Iftar and what to serve during the Holy Month of Ramadan

M

any families in Oman have their favourite Iftar recipes, and many of these have been handed down over the generations. But with Oman’s multicultural melting pot of flavours and influences, there are recipes from near and far that feature on our Iftar tables, such as India, the Middle East and Asia. Our Iftar recipe idea today is samak eish, a delicious dish that features one of our most popular fish: hammour. Coupled with green chilli peppers, coriander, cardamom and tomatoes, it’s a delightfully light meal that infuses Indian and Middle Eastern flavours. Samak means fish in Arabic, and this recipe is perfect to add to a healthy Iftar meal plan. For more Iftar and Suhoor recipe ideas, go to www.nestle-family.com/my-ramadan

Samak Eish Ingredients: § 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying § 1500 g hammour, cleaned and cut into 4 pieces § 1 medium onion or 125 g, diced § 2 cloves garlic, crushed § 1 small green chili pepper, chopped § 2 dried limes, cut into halves § 1 tablespoon coriander leaves, chopped § ½ teaspoon ground cardamom § ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper § 2 cubes MAGGI® Chicken Stock Bouillon Cube § 1 medium tomato or 150g, peeled and diced § 4 tablespoons tomato paste § 4½ cups water or 1125 ml § 2½ cups basmati rice or 500 g, washed

cardamom, black pepper and MAGGI Chicken Stock cubes and then stir for one minute. § Add the tomato and tomato paste and stir for three minutes then add water and bring to the boil. § Add the fried fish to the pot and simmer for five minutes. Remove the fish from the pot and set aside. Add the rice and bring to the boil with constant stirring (add salt to taste). Simmer while covering the pot over a low heat for 20 minutes or until the rice is cooked. § Serve the rice on a serving plate and top with the cooked fish pieces.

Method: § In a large saucepan, heat the oil (reserve three tablespoons of oil to cook the rice) and fry the fish pieces for 8-10 minutes or until they become brown in colour and almost cooked (season fish with salt and pepper). § Remove and place on a kitchen towel to absorb the excess oil. § In a large saucepan, heat the reserved oil and cook the onion for 4-5 minutes or until it becomes light-brown in colour then add the garlic, chili, dried lime, coriander,

t’s funny how plans that are usually made on the spur of the moment are the ones cherished the longest. Something of that ilk happened to me the other day. Sunday is the day that I meet my religious obligations. Once they are duly met, I catch up with my brother, Alvin, and we visit a restaurant, and like to pick one we haven’t been to before. This week was different, though. I had left for Al Khuwair to get some paper and stopped by a Subway. Why? Insatiable thirst and the need to fill a gap, and they had an offer on unlimited drinks. And who would pass that up? I refuelled but still had room for more, so agreed to join my brother for dinner at Oman Avenues Mall. This time, we opted for the Arabian Grill House. At first glance, this eatery offers a dining area with a clear view of the kitchen. On this occasion, it wasn’t that busy, and my brother and I were the only diners apart from a couple of others. On entering, we were warmly welcomed by our server who briefed us on the specials. The menu

Fortunately, it came with a good consistency and a light texture, and was served with Arabic bread, or khubz. We had hoped the bread would be made fresh in the restaurant itself. They used packaged bread which was heated and served. By then we chatted with our server who happened to be from our hometown. A jolly man, he was quite excited about his forthcoming wedding. As we chatted, our entrée arrived but it didn’t resemble the image on the menu. It was a lot smaller, and skimped a bit on the portion sizes. We dived in while my brother waited for his watermelon juice. Visually, the platter didn’t meet expectations. It came along with beef sheek kebabs, chicken sheek and chicken tikka. The main was served with specially made sauce and garlic paste along with fries on the side and khubz.
