YOUTH IN REVOLT

Size four models that look like they haven’t had a bad hair day or a zit in their entire life, celebrities airbrushed beyond recognition, one thousand and one ways to get an orgasm, articles encouraging girls as young as thirteen to go out dressed in little more than a hanky, a one thousand five hundred dollar scarf advertised as a wise investment, girls ‘dressed’, posed and photographed for the pleasure of perverted old men and pubescent little boys, 20 question quizzes that will determine the rest of your life, miracle diets and miracle creams. That’s not life that’s a glossy magazine. Life’s is an amazing, beautiful, eye opening journey, a learning process through which we gather the knowledge and experience required to pass from this life into the next. Youth in revolt will evoke thought, feeling and discussion from start to finish, life will never be a glossy magazine but this, is progress. This is YOUTH IN REVOLT.

Corey/Nineteen/French+Irish/Scorpio sassydad.tumblr.com What do you do? I’m a fine arts major at the College For Creative Studies in Detroit, studying 2 become an art teacher, but my main focus rrn is my digital stuff 0:-). Do you have any animals? I have 2 rats, one hairless and one... regular... and a dog named Frank! Who’s your favorite artist? My favorite artist is probably Jeff Koonz, because he is a total sellout and I love it. Thats what I want to be. I’m a sleazeball. Art isnt real. Kill yr mom. Dlete yr facebook. Are you holding onto something you need to let go of? A lil bit. Idk. I need to let go of most of my underwear and get new underwear because its all super old and creeps me out. What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you? Literally nothing, I do everything based on what I think and not what others think. Judgement is stupid. If someone is judging me, I already don’t want to be their friend. Why should I care about someone who is JUDGING ME’s opinion? (I shouldn’t). What’s your favorite blog you visit? Lickycat has been my favorite blogger for a long time. She’s adorable, hilarious, and really, really nice. She is a huge inspiration to my art, actually. I wouldn’t have even started doing what I’m doing now if I hadn’t found her blog. Do you think you’re a Indigo/Crystal child? Someone told me I was once. But then again he was a sociopath. Have you ever seen anything die? My first rat, Nibbles, when I was in 2nd grade. God rest his soul. Have you ever seen a ghost/ alien? I saw a UFO once!! It was a orangey yellow orb. It like zoomed toward me (like a million feet in the sky tho) and then made a sharp right angle turn and then went away at like, a rly fast speed. Idk how fast. But it was really fast. Funny thing is, I googled it and apparently there were other people that saw it. I was sober, yes. What revolts you? This sounds terrible but mentally disabled people. I think it’s some kind of post-traumatic stress from being tackled and molested by a mentally disabled kid multiple times in elementary school, where I was the only girl with boobs.

YOUTH IN REVOLT

“Your brother was born angry.” – For a while my parents had me convinced. My brother had been expelled from two different schools by year nine and expelled from a third in year ten. He hung out with a group of five other boys who by year ten had all dropped out of high school and it wasn’t long before he followed suit. It seemed the more time he spent with this group of boys the more he began to display weird tendencies, paranoid behaviour and became seemingly detached from reality. He began to lash out at family and friends for no particular reason, specifically my parents. He seemed to have no concern for anyone’s well being, including his own. Eventually he became violent. He would break windows, punch holes in walls, spit and on one or two occasions I even had to call the police because he’d taken a knife to my Father’s throat. Soon seeing my brother not completely stoned out of his mind would become a rare occurrence and he had no concern for who was around either. It seemed he had no shame. I often had to lie my way out of uncomfortable situations he’d put me in by creating a scene in front of my friends until I eventually learnt it was better not to invite anyone over if I knew he was going to be around. At the age of thirteen I began the transition from primary school to secondary school and during that time is when I began to make connections between my brother’s behaviour and the behaviour of others I’d come into contact with since starting high school who were also experimenting with drugs. I Finally began to grasp exactly what it was that had taken my eldest brother from me and left in his place a lifeless zombie who at any given moment might snap and become violent. I was thirteen when I realised my eldest brother suffered from a drug addiction. I was 14 when he over dosed on the floor of my next door neighbour’s living room. Late one night on a weekend I remember waking up to the sound of screams and someone banging violently on the front door followed shortly by the sounds of sirens. I got out of bed, tip toed to my bed room door and tried my hardest to listen to what was going on outside which proved difficult because for a while I couldn’t hear much besides the sound of my own heart beat. I could recognise the voice that was yelling, it was my neighbour and the father of one of the five boys my brother hung out with on a regular basis. My neighbour seemed to be more concerned with the bad influence my brother had apparently had on his son then my brother’s lifeless body laying in his living room. I raised my hand to the door and pushed. I can’t tell you exactly what I was thinking or feeling in that moment, I had become completely detached from what was going on around me, I was watching the scenario play out but I did not feel like I was a part of it. I stood there paralysed, shocked and afraid. Afraid of what might happen next. The paramedics were eventually able to revive my brother but it would be weeks before he would return home. That was the night I realised my brother was obviously not just experimenting with marijuana anymore and the night my parents decided to admit him into rehab. We all hoped over dosing would be a wakeup call and that he would start to turn his life around. It wasn’t and he didn’t and we were forced to accept that his drug addiction would continue to be a burden in our lives for some time to come. If anyone held any hope that he would one day change it would soon disappear. One night at 4am in the morning my brother rang my Father frantic and making little sense. He demanded someone come pick him up but had no idea where he was or how he got there. Eventually my father was able to find him three hours away, confused and bashed almost half to death. He later explained that he owed over a grand to his dealer. My parents paid off his debt and he was readmitted to rehab the next day. Six years later and our family is still dealing with the toll my brother’s drug addiction has had on our lives. It killed my parents to have to watch helplessly while my brother was slowly consumed by his addiction and when he eventually moved out although they knew it was for the best I think they felt in some way they had failed him. My other older brother I think felt as though he hadn’t just lost a brother but also a friend and that was extremely hard for him to accept. Even after my brother moved out I suffered from spontaneous nose bleeds from stress brought on by nightmares and flash backs. I also suffered from stress related heart palpitations which would eventually require a potentially life threatening surgery to fix. I used to think having two older brothers was really cool, I felt safe, like no one could touch me. Now it doesn’t even feel like I have two brothers. If anything positive at all came from my brother’s drug addiction it was how close me and my other brother became because of it, I can talk to him about anything. Although my brother was revived on the floor of my next door neighbour’s living room in a lot of ways he died that night. Because I’ve lived with someone who suffers from a drug addiction and seen the damage drugs can course I would never touch them. I don’t have anything against people who do though, it’s completely their choice. I would never tell anyone what they should and shouldn’t do. Life is all about choices and if you fuck it up you only have yourself to blame. I’m not saying people shouldn’t make mistakes, mistakes are a part of life. Learning from your mistakes and putting what you learn into practise in future situations though is a productive way to avoid repeating those mistakes over and over until you find yourself trapped in a vicious cycle. Learning through living is what’s real to me. Not learning from teachers or from books (not that that type of learning isn’t also important) but from life experiences that help us grow as human beings. Honestly, what’s more real than that?

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Headphones in, world out. Neil Young – On The Beach (1974) When asked who some of my favourite artists and/or bands are I am never quite sure how to answer. This is because with so much good music around it is naturally forever changing. One artist that constantly tops the list however is Neil Young. With an extensive and brilliant back catalogue his music is never far from my mind. With a career spanning just over four decades he has created some the best and most celebrated records of all time and one that really stands out to me is the beautiful 1974 record ‘On The Beach’. Being an album of two sides, the first incorporating more instrumentation and the second a more simplistic sound, this album successfully evokes a range of emotions in the listener. The album’s closer ‘Ambulance Blues’ showcases Neil at his best. With a simple lush vocal backed with acoustic guitar, a steady bass line and harmonica solos, this near to 9 minute song can only be described as a journey. “And there ain’t nothin’ like a friend who can tell you, you’re just pissin’ in the wind.” These lyrics to me sum up perfectly Neil Young as an artist and as a person. ‘On The Beach’ is a perfect album for new Neil Young fans to start with and a great one for older fans to revisit. The Tallest Man On Earth – There’s No Leaving Now (2012) Over the last few years there is no other artist I have been looking forward to hearing new material from more than this folk artist hailing from Sweden. After hearing his debut LP ‘The Shallow Grave’ I eagerly awaited his second. ‘The Wild Hunt’ exceeded expectations and has become one of my favourite folk albums of all time. In anticipation of his third release I got the privilege of catching him live where his lush guitar playing and extraordinarily strong voice shone. It was truly a joy to experience. On ‘There’s No Leaving Now’ no instrumentation has been added, creating more of a band feel. At first this new direction worried me slightly but when I realised it didn’t affect the story telling or brilliant vocal capabilities of Kristian Matsson it began to grow on me. The track of the same title that shows all this off is ‘There’s No Leaving Now’. With a simple piano ballad this track showcases every unique part of Kristian’s voice. The last minute of the song is extremely moving, Kristian has the ability to yell sounding almost in pain whilst still sounding beautiful. While a bit of a change stylistically, the changes are welcome and anticipation for his 4th record is already high. 14

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Modest Mouse – The Lonesome Crowded West 1997 When a Modest Mouse song is played you know straight away that it is a Modest Mouse song, their distinctive sound and signature style is like no other and they have the longevity to prove it, with a career spanning over almost two decades. With an incredible lead singer and songwriter, Isaac Brock, unique vocals and brilliant lyrics really drive their sound. While his voice can often be abrasive he maintains an emotional edge that keeps a listener wanting more. With their second release they found a perfect mesh of the brashness of that first record and the melody of later releases. With the bulk of the record being guitar, bass and drums it is a traditional rock record in many aspects. My favourite track is the just-over-two-minute shot of adrenaline ‘Shit Luck’. With no more than four lines in the entire song shouted by lead singer Isaac, this song relies heavily on the strong and aggressive drumming and loud guitar. Even with its brashness the ability of this song to get stuck in your head is unbelievable. All of this culminates into the last lyric “And my heart is slowly drying up!” ‘The Lonesome Crowded West’ is what shaped the band into what they are and what they have become. Being the most diverse record they have released, and in my opinion their best, they have forever earned a special place in 90’s music.

School Of Seven Bells – Ghostory 2012 On their third release this New York duo creates dreamy soundscapes, almost haunting at times that really accentuate the vocals. The vocals of Alejandra Deheza sound like complete perfection on top of the synth beats and pounding drums. With tracks about love and falling in and out of love approaching it in this musical style compliments the stories amazingly. The sound of all these tracks stem from layered vocals which can only be described as other worldly. My favourite track is the haunting ‘Reappear’, echoed over a simple synth the vocals are by far the best on the album. With lyrics about being in love just to hide your pain, this track deals with a different perspective then the rest of the record. Being the most simple song on here it has a spacey quality perfect for a late night drive to nowhere when you’re in the mood to forget about the rest of the world for a while. .

Sam,

I met Matt in the usual place, his beaten up Corolla parked on the very top floor of the car park, right at the back. Everyone would have to wait for their vodka. When I jumped into the car I noticed Matt already had his pants off. “You’re late. I have 15 minutes until I have to be back.” “What was I supposed to say? Be right back guys, I’m just going to go fuck Matt in his car.” Matt knows everyone hates him and that the only reason we let him hang around is because he knows where to get all the best drugs. I don’t know why I’m sleeping with him; I count how many times I’ve said “This is the last time.” But it never was. I knew exactly what he was going to say next, “Isn’t it about time we told the others? You’re not still hung up on Johnny are you?” But instead of giving him the answer we both already knew, I pulled my shirt over the top of my head and drew a line from his collar bone to his earlobe and whispered “Shut the fuck up you cunt.”

19

YOUTH IN REVOLT

On my way back to the park it started to rain and to be honest I didn’t really care, I always felt dirty after meeting up with Matt. I started to wonder if anyone would be able to smell him on me so I took a swig of the vodka to calm my nerves and as I turned the corner into the park I almost collided with Alice. “What took you so long? I’ve been sent to look for you.” “I’ve got a surprise from Matt.” “Is it chlamydia?” “No, it’s for everyone you idiot.” Alice is the only one who knows about me and Matt; she walked in on us once at a party. The next morning I made her promise not to tell anyone and so far she had kept her word.

“Well come on then, before one of them has a fit.” I followed Alice up to the gazebo where Johnny and Jess were waiting. They were sitting in the middle playing snap, I swear to God that’s as interesting as their relationship gets, it’s no wonder his slept with half the girls on campus. When we reached the gazebo Jess was laughing, Johnny thinks she’s so cute when she laughs. I could feel my cheeks turning red so I through the mushrooms I had gotten off Matt into the middle of their game and said “We’re going camping.” 21

For those who haven’t heard about DTS yet describe what you do and how the concept came about. MIA: DTS is a collective of all of our creative projects, individually and as a team. We don’t want to limit ourselves to just one specialty because we are pretty open minded about the kind of work we take on. We do it all, if we think it has legs, and we feel passionate about something then we will invest all of our love into it. We don’t like to do things half assed, so trying to prioritise ourselves so that we can invest the time to do things right is a major element of the DTS ethos. In regards to our fruition, I guess Andy and I just started taking on a lot of creative work outside of our day jobs and it got to a point where we thought “Shit, we should probably legitimize this somehow” - and so came the immaculate conception of DTS. What inspires the DTS team? ANDY: We get inspired by people who are doing what they love and making something new and exciting. There is an amazing community out there of people who support each other. You just need to find the right people and surround yourselves with them. There is nothing I hate more than seeing people give up because they don’t believe in themselves enough to get started or are just fucking lazy. Fuck it, everyone starts out shit, you just need to get out there and do it. We’re perfect examples of that, we have no idea what we are doing or who we are, but thats kind of the point. Tells us a bit about the DTS team. MIA: DTS is just Andy and myself at this stage, maybe one day when things get really hectic then we would look to expand the team but for now we are pretty happy as a duo that collabs with other like minds. We both come from an events background, so it translates pretty smoothly across our DTS projects. Andy 26

is the brains behind the force, I’m not too flash with numbers and he is really good at organisation so he keeps us on track. I do a lot of PR and relationship building, which is basically just another excuse for me to talk at people. We both have pretty whack creative ideas which usually evolve into legit plans of attack, so we are constantly churning out “incredible” ideas that end up consuming us, but it’s worth it. If we were one person, then we would be superhuman, but we are not so combining our forces is the only way to get shit done. What’s on the cards for DTS in the future? ANDY: We’re trying to do it all, and its fucking hard to be patient holding off things for the right time. Our BLEACHERS parties are lined up from now until October and they just keep getting bigger and bigger, We’re throwing a ‘Treehouse of Horror’ Party soon which is going to be absolutely amazing. We are also prepping the launch of our HYPERCRIME clothing label which will involve heaps of unique shit, as well as collabs with the coolest, and loveliest people we know. That is giving me serious butterflies. What does the DTS team do during there down time? MIA: When we aren’t working on DTS projects, Andy and I both work for an events and touring company, so we are constantly under the pump. It’s good because we can apply our skill sets across numerous projects, but it definitely keeps us busy 99% of the time. The other 1% we spend haunting bars and clubs, sourcing new clothes to wear and new music to listen to. We like to keep informed of what is fresh on the horizon, so we also spend a lot of time on the internet (abusing) social media. What goes on during an average day at DTS HQ?

ANDY: Fucked if I know, We’ve never had an average day at DTS and our HQ is usually Mia’s insanely tiny attic/bedroom, which we usually end up trashing with clothing, paint, posters, laptops and candy. To be honest more of our ‘work’ gets done on trains, out drinking or from our respective couches over the internet. We’re going to try and convert my garage into something more accommodating but who knows how that will go, I think we like being all over the place. We can’t stay still for too long. Are your team meetings serious or is it more like a normal day hanging out with friends? MIA: Every DTS team meeting is chill, because we have so much going on all of the time. So, when we do get a chance to stop and connect the dots, we do it over beers and try to make our environment as relaxed as possible. Nothing worse than sweating the small stuff! Our friendship is what makes DTS work - we get each other and we have the same vision. Although we like do like to have some kind of structure to our work ethic, you just can’t be too serious about these kind of things or it takes away from the fun of it all. Realistically, that is what drives the DTS concept. We just want to do our thing, and have a good time doing it. 27

Jennifer Mehigan 21 year old Ireland-born Jennifer Mehigan, who grew up Singapore, reluctantly left her white and ginger bunny Horatio in the care of her mother when she headed off for Sydney, Australia to complete a BFA in Art Education. Inspired by sunny days, museums, galleries and the Australian landscape she says her approach to her art is sometimes surgical (she doesn’t like things touching, clean white backgrounds, more technical drawings than expressive) and sometimes more abstract, where she just plays with colour and does whatever she feels like without planning. Adding that sometimes they cross over but more often than not she approaches things in one way or the other. Jennifer uses pens, pencils, acrylic and gouache (she’s scared of oils) and found images. She listens to music or documentaries in the background when she creates and despite suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and catching pretty much everything from Glandular Fever to Pneumonia whilst living in Singapore she’s always found time to create. Whether it’s her more simplistic pieces or expressive pieces that you like it’s obvious that this 21 year old artist bursting with talent has a bright future ahead of her.

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Tea. By Diarmaid Murray

I woke up to what can only be described as blinding on a biblical scale. It was as though God and some poorly designed curtains had conspired to wake me up each morning with a great big fuck you from the sun. It was about half past noon as I finally peeled myself out of bed and stammered into the world of other people. How I despise the world of other people and how it contains so many of those people, with their talking and groaning and moaning and whirling and twirling and eating and spitting and shitting all over everything and anything in their path. Sometimes the thought of leaving my bedroom is enough to make me sick with pity, sorrow, and hatred. But on this afternoon I emerged, my head hung low held down by the enormous weight of last night’s lonely drinking. As I walk along the hallway, bound for desperate relief, I notice the smell of lingering cigarette smoke and how the taste has clung to my tongue, as dog shit clings to a homeless man’s shoe - hard to see but an unmistakable waft leaves you sure and unsettled. As piss steamed in the cold air my lungs felt as though they had just emerged from a lifetime of domestic abuse, stern and battle-worn, free and yet still hurting. The churning of my stomach contents is a reminder that my body is not happy with me, constantly telling me that what I have done to it should not be done again; a warning I will no doubt ignore. Nobody home, probably at work or whatever they do on whatever day it is. I take a sit in the lounge where it’s dark, I like the dark. I have a moment to enjoy the silence, but I can’t because it becomes piercing and a great dark cloud closes in above my head. I recognise the cloud and the feeling it brings with it, we are old friends by this stage, we don’t like each other but we’ve been together so long it would seem unreasonable to part ways. The cloud brings with it a numb pain that is constant and persisting. It is the pain of thought, the disappearance of emotion, and the sense of feeling soulless. I know what is coming and I try to hold it off, but there is no point, no stopping it, if you try and fight it will fight back and tire you down so it can crawl to the front of your mind and stew. It comes charging in with an army packed full of every bad thought you’ve ever had, every mistake you’ve ever made, and every bad word anyone ever had to say about you. They are soldiers armed to the teeth with every shit feeling you’ve ever felt. There is no way to play this game and win; if you fight, you will tire, you will lose, and you will die. If you surrender, you will not be tired, but you will be in a state where death seems a pleasant release. You can however retreat, slip back into reality, where you are not overwhelmed by thought and the cloud seems powerless, this was my choice. I stood up and lifted my head as high as I could, not in victory, but simply to say I had not lost. I walked into the kitchen, my head throbbing like I had never experienced before, I had of course experienced this throbbing before but you can’t be aware of that when you’re experiencing it. I stood at the kitchen bench and waited for the kettle to boil, doing my very best not to release whatever was kicking the shit out of my stomach into the world. The kettle squealed as though it was in searing pain and I poured the water into a large mug containing a single tea-bag and a shit-tonne of sugar. I let it sit for a minute before I added some milk and took it outside into the sun. I may like the dark but the sun seemed a safer option in my current state. I threw a large gulp of tea at the back of my throat and it burned, but the sensation was quick and the tea was sweet. I leaned back on a lawn chair and stared at the sky, not a single cloud. It was so bright I felt insulted, which made me laugh. I looked across the yard and noticed the neighbour’s cat stalking some rodent in the distance, oblivious to my presence. I took another sip of tea, this time it was warm and slid down my throat like liquid comfort. My mind began to settle and as I listened to the birds whatever thoughts I was having seemed to vanish… if only for a little while. I had not won, but I had not lost.

Rachel getting married - Jonathan Demme (2008)

Snow Dogs - Brian Levant (2002)

Rachel getting married follows Kym in her quest to come to terms with the actions of her teenage self. Following her sister’s engagement and her 7th stint in rehab (in recovery for prior mishaps with alcohol/drug-use) the movie explores Kym’s resentment towards everyone and everything, her parents and her fear of the resentment they feel towards her due to a drug fuelled mistake of the past will ‘pull at your heartstrings’. With a standout performance from Anne Hathaway and an amateur style of film that initially is a bit annoying at first, does add to the realism of the film, pulling you into the story as not just a fly on the wall but rather a member of the wedding congregation. What is most striking about the film is how genuine it is, it presents some unapologetically flawed characters that are completely relatable. It is successful drama in every sense of the genre and for a film that has the obstacle of being set at a wedding it is not nearly as anal as one would assume. Just watch the fucking film; it’s better than jerking off.

The plot follows Ted, a successful yet high-maintenance dentist from Los Angeles who has just found out that he is adopted. He then decides to set out to Alaska in order to attend the reading of her will and hopefully get in touch with his roots. While doing so, Ted discovers not only his birth mother’s old possessions but his biological father’s whereabouts. While in utter denial of Ted’s existence his birth father who is a local celebrity due to being a dog-sledding champion continues to resist Ted’s presence in his life. Although unjustly neglected, Ted sets out to win his father’s love and respect by competing in the annual dog-sledding competition. This heartwarming comedy offers more than a few laughs when Ted realizes that he’s bitten off more than he can chew. By Nazanin Behbehani

Meet the charming Melbourne based photographer and our friend Aleksander Jason Xavier Kostadinoski or Aleks for short. Aleks is of Macedonian decent and hails from Epping, Victoria, where he says dirty wogs and unidentified objects are plentiful. Almost 21, he says he is on verge of becoming old and boring but we seriously doubt he’ll be slowing down anytime soon. If you were to ask Aleks what he does he would probably respond with something like “I click a button on a machine that is known to mankind as a camera.” A pretty modest answer for someone whose photographed The Red Lights, Les Garcons, The Neighbourhood Youth, Drunk Mums and covered almost every festival in Melbourne. Aleks says his biggest inspiration is music and if he could start a revolution it would be to revolt against shitty music. When he’s not taking photos or fantasising about Pitbull’s demise he’s watching Game of Thrones or Spartacus and spending time with friends and family, especially his Grandma (CUE NAWHZ). Aleks is that friendly photographer who WILL take a photo of you if you ask, will smile and chat with you and who doesn’t strut around like his shit doesn’t stink like some of the sellouts out there. If you’re a Melbourne kid catch Aleks every Friday at Can’t Say, vault 8 at Banana Alley. Watch out for this kid, world!

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Dogs Have Masters, Cats Have Staff (How the things you own end up owning you)

By Alexander Theory

If you had someone that gave you all your meals for free, protected you from other creatures and unscrupulous people, gave you a warm place to sleep, put up with you scratching and biting them, paid for your doctors visits, rarely if ever complained that you never did what you were told, and followed you around picking up your poo, who would you think was in charge? By Jove, I think the cats might rule us after all. But my point today isn’t to argue over feline psychology, it is to point out that this kind of behaviour is just like us. We like to have things. For some reason we think that it is the volume or configuration of stuff we have that makes us happy. We think that if we could obtain some object or another our lives will somehow be better. Well, dear friends, that is why your cat thinks it owns you. Look around your house/apartment/unit/flat/hovel/other domestic structure, look around your office, your car, the attic at your parent’s place. What is there that you own? A couch, an ottoman, a desk and chairs? A table, washing machine, clothing by the container-load? Dishwasher, microwave, television, stereo, futon, queen size bed, king size bed? Papers piled in a filing cabinet that you never look in? You care for these things, wash them and clean up after them, protect them from creatures and unscrupulous people, get furious when they don’t do what they’re told before simmering in the futility of your anger towards inanimate objects. Do the things you own become a consideration in the decisions that you make? If you think it might be nice to live in a different part of town, how much is it going to cost to get movers to drive all of your stuff there? What about living abroad? If you decided to move to France tomorrow, could you? How long would it take you to get rid of your things? Would you pay to put it in storage? Would you insure it? Why? So what do all these things that we pay for in so many more ways than we ever properly consider give you? If you don’t have a microwave will you starve? Can you sleep without a bed? Or watch telly without a sofa? Would you cease to exist if someone broke the DVD player? Does your mobile phone make you happy? Money can’t buy happiness but it can buy things... which won’t make you happy either. If you can find happiness without things then you can have happiness with things, but if you cannot be happy without your stuff, then all the money in the world will not help you. And neither will this post. But for now, know that if you are working towards being complete, you are heading in the wrong direction. “Complete” is not a destination you pull into the driveway of in your brand new SUV, it is a decision you make every day.

Omnom’s YOUTH IN REVOLT

Nikki Marie is an 18 year old lover of food who likes to cook simple, (mostly) healthy meals using ingredients and methods which require minimal skill. She thinks everyone should know or learn how to cook! Nikki often trys to ‘healthify’ sweet treats and ‘bad-for-you’ dishes, but has a weakness for instant noodles, chocolate and vegan ice cream. Nikki has Coeliac Disease, so everything she eats is gluten free. She’s a cute little chef whose recipes will fill your tumtum without that after meal guilt.

METHOD Cupcakes: > Preheat oven to 190 degrees celcius. Spray cupcake pans with oil spray and place patty cases. > Sift the flour and combine with 2 tablespoons of sugar in one bowl. > Separate egg whites/yolks. > Place egg yolks, lemon rind, juice from one lemon, vanilla, spices, baking soda, and salt in a different bowl. Beat with an electric beater until combined. > Stir in the dry sugar/almond and mix until combined well. > Wash the beaters and beat 2 egg whites until light and fluffy with a soft peak (make sure there is absolutely no bit of egg yolk in the bowl). Gradually add 4 tablespoons of sugar while beating. > Add large spoonfuls of egg white to the bowl of almond meal lemon, carefully folding and combining the mixture. Don’t over mix, the mixture needs to be light. > Transfer the batter to the patty cases. > Bake for about 25 minutes, using the prick test, the prick should come out clean. Icing: > Using an electric beater, beat the mix until smooth. > Cover bowl of icing with cling wrap and let sit in the fridge to firm slightly. > Transfer cooled cupcakes to teacups or mugs, spread with icing using a small spoon, decorate with sprinkles and edible flowers. > The teacup in the photograph contains two cupcakes with icing spread between both.

Y.i.R Book Club. Junkie by William S. Burroughs, 1953 ‘Junkie’ is a dark story of a heroin addict’s life during the 40’s and 50’s. Set in New York, it is semiautobiographical of William S. Burroughs’ life. Using the pseudonym William Lee, the story takes the reader through the events in his life that took him from middle-class-man to pushing and getting hooked on drugs, mainly the use of heroin but also anything he could find. The book explores every aspect of a junkie’s lifestyle such as obtaining drugs, using drugs, junk sickness and how low some will go towards getting their next hit. The story’s main purpose is to inform readers that heroin is “…not a kick, or a means to increase enjoyment of life. It is a way of life.”

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, 1962

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, 1955

A Clockwork Orange is a dystopian novel where teenage gang violence and sexual assault is the way to get your kicks. The language (Nadsat) is most definitely the most enjoyable quality to this book but at the beginning can be hard to get your head around. It follows a group of young ‘droogs’ who get up to late-night mischiefs that make them feel real horror while they get off on doing horrific crimes. Once the ultra-violent protagonist, Alex, has been locked up, he becomes the victim of the torturous Ludovico technique who then becomes an average person in society, but is this really the answer in turning his life around for good? The book is short and extreme, but really a very clever piece of writing, and thoroughly enjoyable.

If seducing twelve-year-old girls is your thing, then ‘Lolita’ is for you. This is a fictional memoir of charming Humbert Humbert, who becomes obsessed with the daughter of his landlady. He goes to great measures in trying to seduce Delores “Lolita” Haze, who is the object of ‘H.H.’s’ affection. She is kidnapped and robbed of her childhood. The two road trip around America and Lolita is used to fulfill Humbert’s secret desires. If you ignore the fact that this book is pretty pedophilic, the themes of love and obsession are something that people can really relate to which is why the book is such a classic. By Mykayla Joy
