FINd the breeches that are right for you. yh says... what material?
A lightweight, breathable and stretchy material is very important when choosing summer breeches. You need maximum movement and to be able to stay as cool as possible while riding – and of course, you want them to look as flattering as possible. Cotton and Lycra/elastane mixes are great, particularly for slightly bigger thighs as the fabric skims straight over. The modern stretch 100% polyester fabrics are great technical breeches but they tend to show every lump and bump!
what style?
• High-waisted breeches are ideal for a curvy shape or anyone with a larger waist, as they tend to hold you in a little more. • Hipster styles are good for those with a boyish figure or those with a longer body. • Pleated front breeches (although quite hard to get hold of these days) can hide a multitude of sins. • Jeans-style are now available from lots of brands in stretch denim. These look great and can

also be worn as a fashion look away from horses as well.
What about colours and patterns?
When it comes to patterns, if you want to look slimmer, small patterns like checks are great. Go for a darker colour with a darker coloured full seat. The full seat in a dark shade cuts away the inner thigh and makes your legs look slimmer and your bottom look smaller, like a miracle diet – hurrah we hear you cry! Rather than bright or pale colours, go for strong colours if you want to brighten up your wardrobe – strong tan, green, blue, purple and cerise can all look really stylish and flattering on any age as long as you tone in another piece of your clothing.
Wash advice – keep your breeches brighter for longer
When you wash bright colours, remember to turn them inside out to stop the colour from running and wash them on a cool wash. If you get marks or stains, put neat fabric wash on them and leave it to soak for a few hours rather than washing them on a hot wash straight away.

Choosing the right shampoo
The choice of shampoos is huge and can sometimes be a little confusing too. Before you decide which one is best for your horse it’s worth doing a bit of research. Horses have extremely sensitive skin, and like us, some are more susceptible to irritation than others – so it’s wise to be careful when choosing a shampoo. When introducing any new

product, it’s always a good idea to do a patch test to make sure your horse isn’t allergic to it. If your horse is particularly sensitive go for a hypoallergenic shampoo which hopefully won’t irritate his skin There is now a large number of colour-enhancing shampoos on the market. These tend to work one of two ways. Some contain dye to match and enhance your horse’s natural coat colour. Others contain optical brighteners, which are absorbed by the hair and increase the coat’s ability to reflect light,
enhancing his natural colour - so it appears brighter and shinier. Many whitening shampoos work by adding a blue agent to the coat. In natural light, this blue becomes neutral, making the white seem even whiter. These are great for using on any white markings. A concentrated shampoo can be a cost-effective option – read the label to work out how long the bottle will last and if it’s value for money. Whatever shampoo you use rinsing it all out is essential. Leaving any in can lead to irritation.

Tested by Mary Fuller on her gelding, Dexter The fit of this good quality lightweight rug was ok although not as generous as other makes. However the gussets definitely reduced the pressure around the shoulder area and there was no sign of rubbing. The clip breast fastenings are quick and easy to use, and I like the elasticated leg straps which allow for movement. One of the more expensive rugs I tested but it did a good job. It has no filling at all so I only used it when they didn’t need additional layers. It fitted Hemmingway really well, but was a bit generous for Kishon. Tested by Mary Fuller on her WB gelding, James This is a good lightweight rug which fitted James really well. It is quite generous depth wise, which I like. The shoulder gussets were a great addition as James has large shoulders and it made the rug fit and move with him. The addition of a neck cover is a good idea and it definitely helped keep James (who is grey) cleaner during those wet summer days. Colour Purple Sizes 5ft to 6ft in
Tested by Teresa Lowther on her TB gelding, Gus This rug suited Gus well – he can sometimes be a bit tricky to fit because of his high withers. All the fastenings are good quality and the shoulder gussets are in the right place, allowing good freedom of movement. It’s a good depth and the tail flap is nice and generous giving added protection around the hindquarters. On unpredictable spring, summer and autumn days, it has kept him dry and clean. I would say it’s more of a medium weight rug – it still gives good protection from rain and I’ve used it on cooler days too. The outer material isn’t that durable – It had one rip in it which I’ve had repaired but it’s still got plenty of life left in it. Tested by Gavin Connell on his TB gelding, Ross This is a nice fitting rug, Ross has very high withers and I sometime struggle to get rugs to fit him nicely but this one was fine. It doesn’t move and it hasn’t rubbed him either. The shoulder gussets give good freedom and didn’t restrict his movement at all. For instance, a jacket for dressage should provide a bit of elegance and help to create an effortless picture. A show jumper will want a jacket which allows for movement – you don’t want it to split under pressure. If you dabble in a bit of everything, then buy a good all-rounder. The belly flap fitted snuggly but the tail flap could be bigger and the material did snag easily. Bo wore this rug every day in summer, so it had a lot of use, but I didn’t find the material very durable and the rug does need replacing.
