1.1.1 definition of computer A computer is an electronic device that processes information by performing logical computations. There are many computer device that exist. But usually, when we say computer, we refer to the personal computer. It can be a laptop or a desktop. A laptop is a one-piece computer, while a desktop computer typically has a number of peripheral devices connected to it. The desktop computeis what we usually refer to as the PC. You can use PCs to type documents, send email, manipulate spreadsheets, do desktop publishing, create presentations, and browse the internet. You can also use it to watch movies, listen to music, play video games, and more. These days, computers play an important role in our lives. Aside from personal computers, car computer boxes that we use every day, we also use computers when we withdraw cash from an ATM ,compute using a calculator, when we listen to music using MP3 player , or when we call using our mobile phones. 1.1.2 PCs

PCs are easy to upgrade or add new parts. And they cost much cheaper than laptops.

Laptops are usually battery-powered, one reason why they are compact. They can be easily carried and can be placed anywhere. A laptop computer is sometimes called a notebook computer because of its small size. 1.1.3

Software is needed to make a PC operational. Software is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do. The most important software on a computer is the operating system. Chapter ll lesson 2.1 INTRODUCTION TO WINDOWS XP 2.1.1

Understanding Operating System

An OPERATING SYSTEM,commonly known as OS,is a software program that enables computer hardware to communicate and operate with application software.Without an OS, all the computer hardware and software programs would be useless. The image shown on the chapter page is the logo of MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP, a very popular OS here in the Philipines. It is a product of Microsoft. WINDOWS XP lets users use different types of applications or software For example, it allows you to use word processing application program to write a school report or assignment, or a presentation application program to create a slide show presentation. For the technical people in the Information Technology field. WINDOWS XP is a graphical user interface (GUI). GUI because Windows has pictures (graphical) that you use (user) to communicate (interface) with the computer.The development of Windows brought tremendous growth in the computer industry. Just like other operating systems, Windows is multitasking. Multitasking means, the ability to open or run several different programs applications at the same time. For example, you may listen to music on your computer, while you are typing something and at the same time browsing the internet. With multitasking you may open the application programs that is included in the Microsoft Office Suite all at the same time. But opening too many programs all at the same time slows down your computer. The remedy is to increase your RAM, and/or video card.

2.1.2

START MENU

When you click the start button on the bottom-left corner of the screen monitor, the start menu will appear. The Start Menu is actually the main door to the applications that are on your computer. The left side of the Start menu lists programs, and the right side allows access to common windows folders. It also has a list of other helpful tools. If you select all programs, a pop-up menu appears. Pop-up menus like this are called cascading menus. If a cascading menu is available, a small black triangle appears next to the name of the application of function.

Using the START menu: To begin using the start menu, just click the start botton, and then move the mouse pointer to each option, and view the various cascading menu. Using the all programs menu: To begin using the all programs menu, just move the pointer to the all programs option. The listof programs installed on your computer will appear. Move the mouse pointer to the righ, and then view other cascading menus. Exiting from the menus: To exit the menus, just click outside the menu area or press Esc on your keyboard.

remember: the start menu will place the icon of your most recently opened programs on the start menu so you can easily access them the next you need them.

21.3 icons: The small grapics seen on desktop are called icons. These icons allow you to open files and programs on your computer just by double clicking them using the left mouse butto, or by clicking them with the right mouse button. In other words, icons on desktop are shortcuts to application programs that are installed on your computer and are listed on the All programs menu. You don’t have to go through the start menu anymore. Since the icons are linked to their respective programs or applications, by mere clicking on those icons will automatically open or run a program.

Deleting Icons: Deleting any icon on desktop won’t affect it’s corresponding program installed inside your computer. Programs or software would be affected only if part of the program or the whole program is deleted. For example, if you delete the aviraanti virus icon, only the shortcut icon will be deleted, but not the avira program.

2.1.4

the taskbar:

The taskbar is the long bar across the bottom of the desktop. It contains the Startmenu, and sometimes, the quick launch bar, which contains icon of the Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and Show Desktop. Click an icon to open a program. Click show Desktop to quickly view you desktop without clocing any programs or windows.

TASKBAR The right most portion of the taskbar is called the NOTIFICATION AREA. On this area, you will find the clock and several other icons of program applications you have installed on your computer. Other icons appear in the notification area detailing the status of your activity. For example, when you’re printing a document, a printer icon appears. Microsoft also uses the Notifivation Area to remind you when software updates are available for download.

NOTIFICATION AREA When you open or minimize a window or program, a rectangular button appears on the taskbar that shows the name of the application. These buttons disappear when you close a window.

LESSON 2.2

LAUNCHING PROGRAMS

2.2.1 Exploring Programs Computer programs are used for accomplishing specific task on the computer. For example, the very simple calculator program helps a user add numbers; a word processor application program helps user create text documents; or a spreadsheet application program helps a user create tables for data. The usual way to access an application program on a computer is through the all programs menu on the Start menu. 1. click the Start Button. 2. move the pointer to the all programs option to open its menu, and then move the pointer until you’ve selected the program you want to open. 3. click to open then program you’ve selected. Recall that, programs with small black arrows on their right means that they have cascading menus.

Lessson 2.3 Getting Familiar with the Windows XP 2.3.1 Windows XP Bars and Buttons The rectangular frame that shows a particular application program is called a window. The program window is the work area for a particular program. mwaning, whatever a user will do using a particular program, will have to work within that program window. Below is an illustration of an application program window. The example below is a word processing program, but its features are a common to the other programs in Microsoft Ofice Suite.

The area where text is type is called a workspace. This is where application users do their task, such as writing an assignment, or making list. the workspace will appear differently, depending on the kind of the program being used. 2.3.2 More windows XP Bars and Buttons Each windows XP offers seberal tools, menus, and commands that make the application window easy-to-use. The title bar is the horizontal bar at the top of a window. It displayed with blue background its default background. The menu bar is placed below he title bar. It contains several menus that let you see alist commands. When menus is opened there are some menu options that are followed by ellipsis. This indicates that upon clicking on any option with ellipsis will open a dialog box. These dialog boxes feature helpful tools to help usersperfor tasks. Some menus options have black arrows on their right. This indicates cascading menus.

2.3.3 Scroll Bars There comes atime when all the information in that window can’t be seen at the same time. when this happens, use the scroll bar to view portions of the information which can not be seen. Scroll bars allow users to move easily through a document. It’s especially convenient when viewing a long document or wide documnent. The minimize button at the right end of the title bar has a small dash ( or minus sign). Clicking the minimize button shrinks the window and places it on the taskbar while leaving the program running. The Maximize button, which look like small window, is used to enlarge a window to cover the entire desktop. When a window is maximized the maximize button changes to a restore button. The button has two overlapping squares.If you click the restore button, the maximize window shriks to its previous size ( the size it was before you maximized it) 2.4.2 resizing Windows Resizing windows is slightly different from minimizing, rstoring or maximizing. Maximized windows cannot resized only to restored-down or reduced windows. To resize window:

Lesson 2.5 Customizing Windows XP 2.5.1 The Control Panel The Control Panel in Windows XP is feature for controlling parameters such as display, colors, fonts, port sonnections, system printer configuration the system date and time, and many more. The Control Panel has a number of tools that help control Windows XP appearance.

2.5.2 USING the Control Panel The Windows XP Control Panel has two views, the Category View which is default view of Aindows XP, and the Classic View. If you click a category the window presents a List of Tasks and related Control Panel icons. The new control panel design provides multiple ways to do something thereby making it more user-friendly. However the new Control Panel design doesn’t provide you with access to every available Control Panel tool, it only provides you access to the most commonly used books. 2.5.3 Setting the Time and Date Usually PC users are concerned with the time and date. soits important for a user to see to it that time and date on the PC is accurate. Time and date can be adjustment by soing the following steps: 1. Right-click the clock on the lower right of the desktop or right portion of the taskbar.

The computer cannot talk to you directly. Its need a certain medium or device. The keyboard is one of the devices that can help you give instructions to the computer. It is used to feed information to the computer.
