OW! WHERE DID THIS YEAR GO? I am not sure how you dear readers feel about 2018 but it’s been pretty amazing over here at FIDO Friendly magazine. Amazing in the fact that we fin-

ished our 10th Annual Cross-country Pet Adoption Tour, Get Your Licks on Route 66® where hun-

dreds of dogs and cats found new forever homes and we ourselves returned home just in time to complete the Fall/Winter and final issue of the year. Amazing in the fact that we celebrated 18 years in publishing and amazing in the fact that we are blessed to write about traveling with your pet and spread the word about the importance to adopt an animal in need. This issue brings you our annual 25 Days of Gift Giving, one of my favorite contests for the year where each day in December, one lucky winner is chosen to receive the prize of the day. (see page 48). We also enjoy at this time of the year talking about traveling with Fido during the holidays so the 12 Stays of Christmas will help you get in the mood while taking snow adventures in Whistler, Canada and Breckenridge, Colorado put the icing on the cake, so to speak. (see pages 22 and 24) Our Holiday Safety Guide is an important reminder to take special care during all the festivities this wonderful season has in store to protect Fido from ingesting foods or tinsel which will do him harm. (see page 56) I personally would like to take this time to thank our advertisers who play a big role in producing FIDO Friendly magazine and to our readers who continue to speak to us about the importance of traveling with Fido and who truly feel that he is part of the family. So from our pack to yours, happy holidays and may the joy and blessings of the season be felt by all the members of your family. With Gratitude, SUSAN SIMS

CONTEST: Christmas in July Winner: Amy Barbagallo with dog Cooper Rockford, IL I adopted Cooper from Underdog Rescue in Antioch, IL. The rescue rescued him from Chicago Animal Care and Control who found his mother and sister abandoned on the streets of Chicago. After I lost my beagle of 13 years to cancer, Zoe was lonely and needed another buddy. I went to adoptions events and my local shelter, but Zoe didn’t “click” with any of the dogs. Then I found Cooper on Petfinder. As soon as Zoe saw him for the meet and greet, her tail would not stop wagging and they just kept running around playing like they were old buddies. Cooper is 5 years old. Also, I did a DNA test on him and he is a Labrador Retriever mix crossed with Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bullmastiff Cross. He’s a marvelous mutt who’s goofy, but very smart!

Winner received the following prize package: Clickit Sport safety harness helps diminish the risk of injury to pets in car accidents. It was rigorously tested to include the same crash tests used to test child safety restraints. It’s veterinarian recommended and a Fear FreeSM Preferred Product. sleepypod.com Dogs Love Kale Your dogs are family; give them healthy snacks they’ll love. much to so many people as a therapy dog. First on the list was a trip to the beach with her “sibling” Rowan. We travelled to Flagler Beach in Florida and spent early mornings walking on the warm sand, chasing a few birds, and sniffing the sand crabs. In the evenings, we sat on a bedspread set out on the sand and watched the sunset, and Misha and Rowan stayed alert to bark at any seagulls that dared to land too close. Misha was still feeling good, so often we rose with the sun and the two dogs would chase each other into the waves and proudly carry out various treasures such as sticks and wet balls. Our next adventure was four days at the fabulous dog-centered RV

meeting a few new friends, human and dog. Rowan enjoyed the lure course, but I could tell that Misha was tiring pretty quickly, but she took part in some gentle agility and walks around the Camp Ground. Much of the time, we found a comfortable place to sit and while I read or scratched dog tummies, my two dogs rested or played with each other. Our last vacation this summer was to Wolf Laurel Mountain in North Carolina where we had one last slow hike to the top of Big Bald Mountain with some of her very best friends. For twelve years this had been our favorite place to hike, watch birds, and for Misha, to smell all those good mountain smells. We kept pace with each other: I with my M.S. and Misha with her own illness, we walked slowly together. By August, I knew it was time for the last part of our summer vacation together. I took time off from work and everything else just to spend

ake a walk anywhere around Whistler and you’ll soon see why this mountain resort is regarded as the “dog-friendly” capital of Canada. With numerous Fido-friendly hotels, canine hospitality and support

services, and an epic offering of dog walking trails, it’s the perfect place for a Fido-friendly vacation. But where’s the best place to stay, what activities welcome dogs, and where’s the best

D O G - F R I E N D LY A C T I V I T I E S Whistler is North America’s leading ski resort so it’s hardly surprising that you’ll be treated to world-class skiing or snowboarding while you’re here. But there are a few other activities that form the perfect après ski. Oh, and don’t worry, Fido can come along too! Let’s start with Forged Axe Throwing. Regarded as one of the most awesome indoor activities in Whistler, this most Canadian of pastimes involves hurling an axe at a bullseye and truly unleashing that inner lumberjack. Forged is extremely dog-friendly too - they even have a house axe throwing dog, the company mascot Bandito. He’s more than happy to help entertain your furry companion while you test your aim in this thrilling group activity. forgedaxe.ca Enjoy a break from the norm and spend the day snowshoeing at Whistler’s Olympic Park for a truly thrilling adventure. great places to dine, and thanks to outdoor heaters, these dog-friendly patio areas stay warm and toasty throughout the winter months. Most village haunts welcome your dog to the patio while you enjoy your meal and many restaurants provide water dishes and treats too. Serious foodies should head to Araxi to experience the best of West Coast cuisine, while the Dubh Linn Gate is another popular dog-friendly haunt. You’ll find the outdoor area always buzzing, usually due to how hard it is to get a seat inside. Seat yourself and join the party. For the discerning dog, Summit Hotel Lodge & Spa is a great choice. All dogs stay at Summit for free and the hotel even provides a doggy bag and an endless supply of cuddles from the staff. Your doggy’s name will be featured on the VIP Pet’s Board when you arrive. Again, dogs must be accompanied at all times but dog-walking services are available. Pet-friendly rooms are also readily available at The Westin Resort & Spa, where luxurious dog beds and dog bowls can be collected upon checkin. Follow these tips for a Fido-friendly fall clean up both inside and out. NO NEED TO AGONIZE . FERTILIZE (JUST KEEP IT ORG ANIC) If we want to have a beautiful Spring lawn, then it is best to fertilize it before the cold weather hits. To keep it Fido-friendly it is best to use an organic, pet-safe fertilizer. Although we may not think of fertilizer as a problem for animals, the residue can get stuck to their paws. If accidentally ingested it can

H

ISTORIC HOTELS THAT WELCOME BOTH YOU AND FIDO ARE ALWAYS AT THE TOP OF OUR LIST so while in Oklahoma City, we

visited an old friend, the Colcord Hotel with our rescue pups. The lobby is a wow factor. Beautiful marble, original from 1910, takes your breath away and just to ride in the elevator gleaming with the original nickel and bronze letterbox and elevator doors is a grand experience. Our fur-kids were made comfortable in our spacious suite and we were all able to relax and plan for our walking excursion over to Bricktown. Staying at the Fido-friendly Colcord also offered us an opportunity to dine at the onsite restaurant, Flint. Casually elegant and very popular on a Friday night, our server Dillon, was right on top of everything from helping us with food choices to offering a little bit about the history of the place. As a veg-head I was happy to see a menu with great choices beyond a salad. Starting with my favorite Chardonnay, Rombauer, I ordered a cup of the Vegetable Posole while my husband ordered Bison Chili. My soup had a nice smooth taste and as reported by my hubby, his was the best chili he has ever tasted. Next up we shared Fried Green Tomatoes topped with deviled crab. Some little ‘kick’ in this meal was a fun surprise and we were excited to experience what came next. Chef created a menu to feature the ‘taste of OKC’ so nothing bland or boring will be found on its pages. With a Sherry Marinated Cauliflower on Manchego Cheese Grits set before me, I felt that finally, a dish for a vegetarian that would be filling, satisfying and definitely not boring. I could not finish the meal; it was that hearty, that tasty and that filling. My husband ordered the fillet and although not cooked according to his wishes the first go around, Dillon was quick to bring it back to the kitchen and remedy the situation. So wanting to give ourselves a treat, the desserts of Carrot Cake and Pecan Pie were our ultimate choices. Warning: the pecan pie is a square serving easily shared by 2 or even 4 people. Carrot Cake is smaller and absolutely dense with flavor. Both ended up in a to go box, promising us a nice start to the following day along with a sample of the perfectly cooked steak for the rest of the pack snoozing away upstairs.

» I F YOU GO

At the Colcord Hotel, luxury means the gold standard of service and comfort. Stay for a night or for a while and be sure and bring your pups, too. They gladly accept up to two dogs per room, up to 50 pounds each

12 Stays of Christmas

Give yourself the gift of an unforgettable holiday escape and enjoy spending time with your best pal this year. By Tamra Bolton

42 Fall/Winter 2018

T

he holidays can be a wonderful time to share with family and friends, but sometimes our dream is to escape the stress and busyness that surrounds the season

and spend time with our furry friends and relax. If “all you want for Christmas is a real good tan” or if you’d rather stroll down “city sidewalks, busy sidewalks dressed in holiday style” or if “walking in a winter wonderland” or “taking a sleigh ride” is more your style, there is a stay that fits you and your pampered pooch’s wish list. FIDO Friendly has found some luxurious places to escape to this season, ones that fit every taste. From sunny beach getaways to high adventure in the mountains, one of these twelve stays of Christmas is just right for you and Fido.

Snow-Lovers THE ARRABELLE The Arrabelle at Vail Square in Vail, Colorado is like taking a European ski vacation without the hassle of overseas travel. The elegant old-world charm of The Arrabelle makes you and your pooch feel pampered from the time you arrive. With plush red velvet pet beds, which you can have embroidered with your pet’s name, to the homemade doggie treats and personal water bowls, your pal will think he is in doggie heaven. During your visit, you can check out a Fit Bark, a Fitbit for your dog, to monitor their sleep and activity. For you, there is a complimentary bottle of Henry Wine, honoring the first canine member of the Vail Ski Patrol. B A C H E L O R G U L C H R I T Z- C A R LT O N The Ritz-Carlton name is synonymous with luxury and personal service and the Bachelor Gulch resort in Avon, Colorado will roll out the red carpet for you and your pooch. Indulge Fido with an in-room dog massage after enjoying a guided snowshoe hike together. While you’re there, be sure to say hello to Bachelor and Scout, the hotel canine mascots. THE PINES LODGE From the doggie guest book to ‘pupdown’ pillow service, The Pines Lodge, A RockResort, in Beaver Creek, Colorado is a first class experience for you and your pal. Nestled in an aspen and pine valley, The Pines offers GoPro rentals to capture your pup’s POV while exploring the surrounding trails and after a busy day outdoors you and Fido can enBachelor Gulch’s hotel dog namesake, Bachelor, taking a snooze in the snow.

At The Betsy, they welcome your fur pal with open arms. While there you can explore the busy shopping area or experience a ‘pampering with pooch’ treatment together. Want to visit the famous Huntington Beach Dog Park with your pal this season Pasea Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach, California is just a short drive from there and is a paw-fect place to hang out. Lago, the resort’s French Bulldog Pet Concierge will make sure that your friend has everything he needs to enjoy his stay. The view from Pasea’s modern rooms is stunning and there is no better way to enjoy one of California’s most iconic stretches of coastline.

City Lovers THE OLD NO Immerse yourself in the history, culture, and music of the Big Easy at The Old No. 77. Located just three blocks from the famous French

uarter of New Or-

leans, this historic hotel will put you and Fido in the middle of the action. With a pet-friendly staff to help you find your way around, you and your best pal can make the most of your stay in this most European of all American cities. G R A C E VA N D E R B I LT If a smaller sophisticated city is more your style, try Newport, Rhode Island, home to the Grace Vanderbilt, a vintage Gilded Age mansion turned boutique hotel. You and your canine friend can stroll along the famous waterfront, visit artisan glass-blowers, artists’ galleries, and visit the many historic New England sites around town. Tinkerbelle, the Grace Vanderbilt’s’ ‘furfluencer’ is on hand to meet guests, both two and four-legged. Your furry friend can enjoy the delicious Gracious Canine menu featuring items like Salmon and Wild Rice and Steak and Sweet Potatoes.

MANY HOLIDAY TRADITIONS WE ENJOY CAN BE HARMFUL OR EVEN DANGEROUS TO OUR PETS If you decide to bring a live Christmas tree into your house, be sure your pet cannot drink the water in the stand reservoir. The water may contain fertilizer and pesticide residue, preservatives, mold, and bacteria that could make your pet sick. Use the tree skirt or aluminum foil to cover the reservoir. Delivering Packages and Smiles Jo-Anna Hehir dreamed of a job that would allow her to spend time with her dogs. By Penny Eims

50 Fall/Winter 2018

I

MAGINE IF YOU COULD EARN MONEY WHILE SPENDING TIME WITH YOUR DOGS AND SET-

TING YOUR OWN SCHEDULE…does it sound too good to be true? This dream job is exactly what Texas-native Jo-Anna Hehir, a retired wedding planner turned therapy dog trainer, secured when she started delivering packages for Amazon Flex. Hehir heard about the opportunities with Amazon Flex just over a year ago after meeting up with a friend while out on a walk with her two Great Pyrenees, George and Fiona. The desire to be able to earn money with her oversized and “very clingy” dogs in tow was too good for Hehir to pass up – before long, she had downloaded the Amazon Flex app and was set to pick up her first batch of packages for delivery. The opportunity proved to be every bit as amazing as Hehir hoped it would be – in fact, she tells FIDO Friendly that the job is “perfect,” adding, “Amazon welcomed me and my puppies with open arms. I feel like I have my cake and can eat it too!”

bowser on a budget

You’ll Fall for these Autumn Retreats that Cater to Fido Paris Permenter and John Bigley

T

HE END OF SUMMER MEANS SOME COOL TRAVEL DEALS FOR FIDOS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

A cornucopia of canine amenities greet fall

travelers as they hit the road this autumn. With the falling leaves come falling prices in all but the most popular leaf peeping destinations, one more reason this “shoulder season” fetches top marks with many traveling dog lovers. WA L K I N T H E PAW P R I N T S O F F O U N D I N G FIDOS Fresh from a grand opening in May 2018, The Draftsman hotel in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia serves as a home base for dog travelers exploring historic sites this fall like James Monroe’s Montpelier, which welcomes leashed dogs on landscape tours and in the outdoor café. The Draftsman is named for Monroe and his fellow Virginia founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, draftsmen of important documents in the nation’s history and dog owners all. Guests are greeted by Bulleit, a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, and receive a dog toy from the front desk. In addition, the front desk staff can provide blankets and bowls for water/food to ensure a comfortable stay for the dogs. The Draftsman, 1106 W. Main St.,Charlottesville, VA 22903; (434) 984-8000; thedraftsmanhotel.com. B O W S E R S E N J OY B O U L D E R Colorado leaf peepers relax with their dogs in style at the Hotel Boulderado, the first luxury hotel built in Boulder, designed and funded by city residents. Call in advance of your stay and the elegant Victorian hotel will welcome your dog with a bed, food and water bowls, and a single “turn down” chew bone on arrival. Before the day’s adventures, enjoy local coffee with Fido at your side in the historic lobby atrium beneath the stained glass roof; after a day of exploration, you and your dog can dine together in the lobby as well. Walk to the outdoor Pearl Street Mall from the hotel or arrange for the Mercedes van to take you and Fido to hiking trails and parks within a three-mile radius. Hotel Boulderado, 2115 13th St., Boulder, CO 80302; (303) 442-4344; www.boulderado.com.

D O G WA L K I N G , L O N E S TA R S T Y L E While Texas doesn’t often come to mind when the subject of fall foliage arises, central Texas does sport some seasonal colors as the temperature drops in late autumn. Just east of Austin, the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa welcomes Fido with pet-friendly accommodations, a dog bed, food and water bowls, and a bag of chef-created dog treats—as well as the option of in-room dishes for dogs. When it’s time to get out and explore, the hotel features more than 18 miles of trails—then cozy up by the outdoor fire pit on a starry evening. The Colorado River runs through the property, which is also home to two Texas Longhorns. Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa, 575
