NEW LOOK! SAME GREAT TASTE

We’ve redesigned our packaging, but what’s inside is still the high quality, human grade ingredients your pet knows and loves!

100% HUMAN GRADE IT’S NOT A SLOGAN, IT’S A STANDARD. Most pet food is something called ‘feed grade.’ The Honest Kitchen is the world’s first ‘human grade’ pet food made with 100% human grade ingredients and produced in a human food facility. That means higher quality ingredients and more safety standards, just like you‘d expect in your own food. But it’s for your dog to eat, not you!

OAD TRIP! Everyone start your engines! Nissan USA is powering our 10th Annual Crosscounty pet adoption tour Get Your Licks on Route 66® where we travel from Los Angeles,

California to Chicago, Illinois, stopping at shelters along the way to support adoption events and

to raise money. I am proud to announce that in the first nine years, we have helped place over 11,000 pets in to new forever homes. Our kick-off is September 8, 2018 at the East Valley Animal Shelter in Los Angeles where you can meet our celebrity spokesperson, Brandon McMillan, Emmy Award Winning TV Host of the weekly CBS series, Lucky Dog. None of this could be possible without our many sponsors who join the cause and also send product for our spinning wheel where attendees donate money to spin and win with all proceeds benefiting the shelter at the end of the day. Of course we bring the pack with us and they play at local daycare while we work the events. It’s truly a dog’s life and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Thinking about joining us? Check out our locations and dates by visiting our website and clicking on the Get Your Licks on Route 66® badge. We would love to see you at one our pet adoption events and who knows, you just might find your new forever friend! fidofriendly.com With compassion, SUSAN SIMS

explore with complete freedom! Sears Island is one of the largest undeveloped islands on the Eastern seaboard and it is 936 acres of pure happiness for your canine and one of the few places with no restrictions on dogs. (Carrying a leash is recommended just in case you encounter an unfriendly pooch or if your friend has a tendency to wander off.) Located at the top of Penobscot Bay, this island is packed with hiking trails, history, and diverse species of wildlife. It is essentially a wild place you will love visiting any time of the year. You can access the island by a causeway, but no vehicles are allowed on the island, so you must park on the causeway and proceed on foot or bicycle. Susan K. White, President of Friends of Sears Island, urges you to respect the wilderness, be accountable for your pet’s behavior, and please pick up all waste and dispose of it properly. “The complete freedom dogs and their owners enjoy depends on the actions of responsible pet owners.” says Ms. White. Isn’t that what we all want – to protect and preserve these wonderful places across America for us to enjoy with our friends? This summer, get out and play, but remember to play responsibly. Note: It’s always a good idea to check beach conditions before going, weather extremes, storms, and other adverse conditions may close some beaches or sections temporarily. This will save you time and keep you and your furry pal safe.

OOR COUNTY IS A PERSONAL FAVORITE OF OURS. The peninsula in fall can’t be beat for

the weather and friendly folks. This year we chose to stay at the family owned The Shallows Resort in Egg Harbor on the shores of Green Bay. Our condo with water views included a full kitchen and over a three-day period, proved to suit our needs whether it was to enjoy soup in the evening or fixing breakfast in the morning before heading out to sightsee. Staying here was more like visiting a relative, comfortable and relaxing. The condo unit was upstairs and very quiet. No daily maid service with the exception to leave out towels on the chairs on the deck in the morning to receive fresh towels upon your return. On the expansive grounds, the Gathering Room served up fresh pastry and coffee each morning with the owner Bob Dickson, popping in with a bowl of apples and a cheerful ‘good morning.’ In the evening, weather permitting, there are several spots to sit and enjoy the cool breeze and watch the sun set over the bay. The resort is pet-friendly and we saw many trips, take Fido with you. One of our favorites is the Fido-friendly Harbor Fish Market and Grille located on the shores of Lake Michigan in downtown Baileys Harbor with their own Doggy Menu! Choices include Sophie’s Hound Dog Heaven consisting of a juicy 1/3-pound ground beef patty with a cup of doggy kibble for $3.95, Stately’s Meaty Scramble with diced ham, two scrambled eggs and cup of doggy kibble (breakfast only) for $3.95. And what hound doesn’t enjoy dessert? Fido will be satisfied with Hank’s Chilly Paws, a single scoop of vanilla frozen custard for $2.95. harborfishmarket-grille.com With Fido at a pet-sitter an outing not to be missed on any Door County bucket list is taking in a play at the historic Peninsula Players in its unique setting on sixteen forested acres along the shores of Green Bay. Known as America’s Oldest Professional Resident Summer Theatre, we like to arrive early with a picnic to enjoy in the forest and cocktails are available for purchase. Watching the sunset before entering the theatre is something we never tire of. peninsulaplayers.com Another fun outing is a visit to the Door County Maritime Museum filled with exhibits of historical information. During our recent visit, a dog-centric exhibit caught our eye and we learned about dogs stationed at lighthouses and life saving dogs over the years. The 1946 film A Dog of the Seven Seas featured Sinbad, the mutt who was smuggled aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Campbell and his wartime voyage in the South Pacific. Promoted as Chief Dog, Sinbad spent 11 years traveling the world and was the subject of a best-selling biography, Sinbad of the Coast Guard. The Shallows wraps you up and holds you in a time gone by; the time before constant electronic messaging and an on-call status once reserved for doctors and first-responders bombarded us. Going to sleep with the windows open to listen to the rain and waking up with a view of a tree filled forest was the eye-candy we needed and forced us to slow down, take a breath, and enjoy one of the most beautiful places in America. *ask about pet policy and let them know when booking that you are bringing Fido. gnarled olive trees sang with chattering birds. Everything was there that was supposed to be: a doorway draped in richly scented honeysuckle; cats stretched languorously amongst purple daisies, and the dull tonk tonk of bells rattled by sheep grazing in distant meadows. Years of traveling and housesitting have taught me more than could ever be condensed into the pages of a book, but one truth I will share is that believing the world will step up and look after you probably means it will. Giving the stars a chance to align is when the magic happens. Some people have given ghastly titles to this such as visualization and law of attraction: packaging a light philosophy into a marketable product is one of the scourges of recent decades. Whatever it is called or however much credit is assigned to a deity, I know those two dogs and the life I temporarily adopted on that dusty little Spanish island made me feel like a person again. Both of the dogs were rescues, one originally from Turkey and the other whisked away from kennels the day before time was going to be called. esident pet adoption expert Larissa Wohl on Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family is the first to admit that she has a dream job. ”I pinch myself every single day that I get to do

this, it’s magical, I love it,” says Larissa. Before landing her spot on Home & Family,

Larissa graduated with a degree in journalism from San Francisco State University and worked as a broadcast journalist in a few different markets such as Tucson, Bakersfield and San Diego. Larissa explains, “I was considered an MMJ, which is a Multi Media Journalist as I had to shoot and edit my own stories.” Covering a wide arrange of topics from the Gabby Gifford shooting in Tucson to fun stories about animals impacting people, Larissa was ready for the steady environment on Home & Family. “I truly love my job now as I get to cover a passionate subject. It’s all truly come full circle,” she says. Viewers are entertained daily by learning about different animal shelters where their perfect pet may be waiting for them. Hallmark Channel’s Adoption Ever After pet adoption initiative is the tagline at the end of each segment. Larissa says more than 600 animals that have been showcased have all been adopted. Larissa is quick to add that it’s a team effort. The PHOTOGR APHY © 2018 CROWN MEDIA UNITED STATES, LLC | PHOTO: JEREMY LEE / ALE X X HENRY STUDIOS, LLC

amazing rescues, Hallmark Channel and viewers make it all possible. As viewers are sitting comfortably at home with their first cup of coffee, Larissa has been preparing for the days shoot arriving at 8:00 A.M. in time for the first meeting of the day. Larissa says “Any time as a viewer you see a photo or video pop up on the screen during a segment, that’s something that the editors have carefully put together first. So as the producer, I sit with the editors and make sure they know exactly what we want shown and that it all looks good. Then we work with the hosts and make sure they are fully up to speed on the segment itself; they need to know what to expect so there are no surprises when we start rolling.“ Larissa laughs, “I try to get over to hair and makeup for 30 minutes so I don’t look like a total crazy person when I go on set and then I try and get a little bit of lunch. There are days that I don’t even have that half hour to get in to hair and makeup and I can tell looking back, oh yeah, I did my own hair and makeup that day because it’s a mess.” Larissa continues, “Then I have to double check that all the graphics are ready and everything looks good, sounds good and then about noon, my animal for the

day arrives on set. I greet the rescue and since they have never been here, I explain how it all works. We get video of the dog or cat, as we like to showcase additional video of the animal during the adoption piece. I then run that video to the editors to work on and then about 12:30 - 12:40 I get out to set, I get my microphone on, write notes about the animal I am going to be speaking about and I wait for my cue around 1:05 to talk about the animal.” Larissa performs double duty as she produces and is on camera. “Most of the other on air per-

sonalities or talent on our show have a producer assigned to them. Sometimes I do have someone to help to make sure things are spelled correctly but for the most part, it’s just me” says Larissa. After each show a post show meeting is held where the team will discuss each of the 11 segments, review what worked, what didn’t. After the post show meeting, another meeting ensues to discuss what is happening the following day. “I usually get out around five or so and then when I get home I am checking emails, scheduling future adoptions and doing all the outreach to see how many animals have been adopted. We like to keep track of the animals we showcase, where they go, if there is an awesome or

about kitten season.

It’s obvious that Larissa has a big heart and her heart makes room for fostering over three dozen animals thus far along with being dog mom to Muppet and Maple, her current ‘foster fails.’ The day before our interview, Larissa decided to add Claire, a dog who was showcased on one of her segments to her pack. Says Larissa, “She is older and has a heart murmur and I hated the idea of her outside at the rescue. So she is now at my house, last night was her first night. Usually I have one to two fosters and then my two dogs at any given time. I have had more than that but have learned that it’s just a little bit of a challenge.” No doubt that Larissa is up for the challenge when it comes to helping animals. Asked what she has learned from her dogs, Larissa said, “They have really taught me how to laugh because no matter what, you just look at them and they do something silly. They are so intuitive and the minute you are having a low moment or bad or stressful day, they kind of just take over and start hopping around and take you out of your own element for a minute. So just the laughter is huge. They have also taught me that sleeping is a gift to be treasured. I had no idea until going out of town without a dog for a couple of days how much they

wake me up in the night. I tend to them even when I don’t know I am tending to them. They mean so much to me that any selfishness goes out the window. I have also been a little more understanding of sharing my time and space and love. I remember my first dog, I freaked out every time it had a loose poop. The anxiety level was through the roof. And now since I have had so many wonderful dogs in and out of my life and house, I’ve realized there is always a learning curve when you bring in a new foster dog. I have learned to relax and go with the flow and take things as they happen. Even Claire, my new foster from last night, just learning some of her habits in the 10 hours I have had her, it’s been something new. Last night I was talking with my friend and Claire just drops and pees on the floor. So I thought, here we go, grab the rag, grab the spritz. I take things as they come so much more and have learned to laugh about the whole process.” Larissa is an inspiration to those of us who want to rescue, foster or lend our voices to help make a difference for our animal friends. If a busy gal like Larissa can make time and room in her heart to help animals, then it stands to reason that we can all do just one thing to help make a difference in the lives of shelter pets. Head on over to Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family to learn more about Larissa and the Adoption Ever After pet initiative. hallmarkchannel.com/home-and-family

GET LOUD Meet Deborah DiMare, global influencer for the vegan design movement.

PHOTOGR APHY SANTIAGO BERNAL

By Anne Carol Lucas

“I was living in the bliss of ignorance until I was ready”, explained Deborah DiMare, founder of DiMare Design and VeganDesign. org. Deborah believes that everyone becomes aware at the right time. As she says, “There are no coincidences. All decisions lead towards your path.” DiMare is most grateful for her turning point, which was the outcome of viewing animal cruelty videos. “The videos consumed me with sadness. I had been purchasing overpriced accessories, which had been made from leather and crocodile, ostrich and other skins. It was hypocritical of me to sit on my leather sofa with my dog, Lucca, by my side after acquiring such knowledge and insight. My mission became one to change social consciousness and to educate”. DiMare changed course 15 years ago when she founded DiMare Design, an ultra-luxury design business. Through it she has become an author, TV personality, educational speaker and global influencer for the vegan design movement. Her vegan design expertise has been featured on the Today Show, NBC, TLC, the Huffington Post, Ocean Drive, VegNews and PETA. Her transition to all vegan, cruelty-free and sustainable alternatives was done at an unprecedented pace as a result of her newfound passion. “It was not only the humane choice, but it brought the gift of positive energy along with it. Vegan made products are more durable, easier to maintain and are attracting the ever-increasing socially conscious consumer. Well-priced alternatives are causing the corporate giants in the world of interior design to change. It is a win-win for all. It is important to open yourself up to new concepts and be educated for humane options, which is necessary for this generation and the next. The marriage with vegan decor has provided good energy, as there is no blood or tragedy attached”. DiMare pointed out the transition had been made in the fashion industry regarding the use of furs and leather and although at times it regressed, it is now on track due to education, trends, and the voices of leaders in the fashion world.

Deborah DiMare is the respected voice in the world of interior design. DiMare explained, “Vegan products are just so much healthier. They are free of carcinogens and other poisons and feel great on your skin. They do not feel or smell like animals, and are great for people with sensory challenges including Autism. There are so many alternatives. Banana silk mimics real leather, Pinatex, pineapple “leather”, ultra suede, tencel, microfiber, hemp and oilcloth are all terrific and are easy to clean up. Cork is great to work with. It is stripped from trees without damaging them. It is an Eco-friendly option. Mushroom leather is softer and can create density, which is a unique option for design.” DiMare went on the explain how companies are changing as they see the public is desirous of alternatives and are backing it up in their purchases. All of Tesla’s interiors are now vegan, with a steering wheel vegan option upon request. Other carmakers are following suit. The perception of added comfort no longer equates. Vegan alternatives now are clean, durable, elegant, comfortable, and add health to the home. DiMare believes going vegan in your furniture and decor is a way of life. Her conviction in refusing to offer furniture and decor made from living beings is saving animals from being slaughtered, workers from dying in filth, lessening toxic conditions that trigger illness and helping the planet from screaming in pain.

DiMare also created the online Vegan Design 101 Class to educate industry professionals and design-loving consumers about vegan home decor and non-animal derived textile options in order to create healthier, fabulous humane spaces. Through this course the vegan design community has grown 500% since 2014. Her class is affordable matching the student’s knowledge, passion, creativity and helps them take action in marketing and community awareness. Every person who completes the class has an opportunity to become an Ambassador and promote the vegan design movement to others. VeganDesign.org has a council as well for businesses and industry professionals to join. Council members can display the VeganDesign.org badge on their website, store fronts, products, signature line and all marketing material. It’s a strong, passionate and connected community. “All decisions take us on our path” expressed DiMare. She listened to her heart and followed it boldly. Deborah DiMare became aware at the right time for herself. She has imparted the gift of empathy and kindness by educating those who are ready to hear, and they are many. Their voices are LOUD brimming with excitement and positive energy. Without a doubt, their impact will continue to reap rewards for many, many years.

Bear’s wonderful new life Life has changed dramatically since the time that the elderly dog was freed from his chain.

N JANUARY 2017, LIFE BEGAN FOR A SENIOR DOG NAMED BEAR…a real life, not merely a

sad existence. The momentous beginning of Bear’s life took place when members of the New York-based Guardians of Rescue organization cut off the 35-pound chain which had kept him tethered to a tree in his family’s yard for 15 long years. It didn’t take long for the amiable Labrador retriever mix to discover how grand life could be. Shortly after being freed, he took a stroll on a beach, enjoyed a Puppuccino, got a toy, and learned what it was like to become a darling of the media. The dog who had endured a life of loneliness and anonymity was suddenly in the spotlight – his story was featured on Inside Edition, local news stations and even Good Morning America. The widespread media attention ultimately led Bear to his new mom, Kerrie Rank, who officially adopted him from the Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue Shelter on January 29, 2017. Rank explained to FIDO Friendly how fate seemed to lead her to the newly freed dog, “I heard about Bear one morning when I turned on the TV and the local news channel was doing a story on him. The news gave information on how to apply to adopt him if interested. The thing is, I never turn on the TV in the morning. I was meant to hear about Bear that morning and the occasional fall. But overall, the beloved
