The Cult

LET LOVE RULE

Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby! And then some. Purveyors of loved-up rock’n’roll finery, UK outfit The Cult are set to return to Australia for the first time in 15 years, showcasing their ground-breaking 1985 album, Love, plus some well-admired classics and hits. Fronted by Ian Astbury, last seen in Perth fronting The Doors Of The 21st Century, The Cult will perform on Wednesday, May 12, at Metro City. Tickets go on sale from Friday, March 19, from ticketek.com.au and moshtix. com.au.

And the winner is… Maylands! After a masterful display of brinkmanship over arch rivals Carabooda and Wungong, the City Of Bayswater has secured Maylands as the new home of the West Australian Ballet. WA’s dancing elite will soon (after some final contractual and funding negotiations) be pirouetting their pinkies across the grand and historic floorboards of the Senses Building, formerly home to the Royal WA Institute For The Blind. Not since the great Hemisphere Bar & Cafe fire at the turn of the Century have the northern flanks of Guildford Road seen so much action. But, according to Bayswater Mayor Terry Kenyon, changes are afoot in ol’ Maylands. “The arts are an asset that should be nurtured and encouraged to grow naturally,” he says. “By embracing this philosophy we have attracted many artistic and creative people to our city over the years, which is why council supports arts and cultural endeavours, such as ballet.” Indeed, the Maylands revolution has

begun. Cop that Catania, Scaffidi and Pettitt there’s a new weird arty kid on the block! Sipping a frosted middy over the bar at Mayland’s haughty CJ’s Tavern, Maylands local Gazza McKenzie sums up the buoyant feeling of the locals towards Mayland’s new found glory. “Yeah mate, we love a bitta dancin’ ’round these parts,” he concurs. “They used to have girls dancing ’ere back in the day. Woah, they were real talents – let me tell you boss. Yeah, it’s good to ’ear the dancers are coming back to Maylands. The more the merrier.” Hats off to you Maylands (or, if you prefer, you can leave your hat on…). Finally, X-Press would like to congratulate WA authors Jon Doust and Craig Silvey, who have made the long list for this year’s Miles Franklin Award, taken out last year by none other than WA’s own Tim Winton. You’ve done us scribblers proud, gentlemen. _JULIAN TOMPKIN

LAME ATTACK Dear X-Press, Imagine my surprise when, after returning to Per th from a few years out of town, one of my all time favourite acts, “trip hop pioneers” Massive Attack, are set to play a gig in the beautiful Kings Park. Awesome. Come the concert, after cueing for an hour for a drink, I made my way through the masses straight to the front, only to find that an acre of prime real estate is occupied by a bloody lake and some moron in fluoro telling me, “You can’t sit here, it’s emergency access”. “For what?,” I asked, “once the band starts we will all be up dancing anyway, right?” Wrong! “No standing or dancing here,” replied the security guard. “If you want to stand there’s an area over there,” he said, pointing to a fencedoff corridor to the side of stage (from where you can’t see much). No wonder they erected a blurry screen to watch the show on. “C’mon, gimme a break. This is ridiculous!” I protested. Turns out this was only the beginning of what was to be a farcical night. The management and promoters should not be allowed to work in the industry if they’re going to put a legendary dance act like

Massive Attack at a venue which does not allow you to shake your shit and get down to it. And to all the braindead sheeple who were happy to comply and sit on their fat apathetic asses all night? Please, please, please next time stay at home and watch it on You Tube or something. I can only imagine what Robert, Grant, Martina and the band had to say about this pathetic turnout of blank stares sitting back in their chairs, mute and emotionless. As a whole, the crowd gave no energy to the band and sadly, Massive Attack didn’t give us a whole lot of energy back. It really was embarrassing. Dullsville was out in force on Friday night, ruining what should have been a highlight of the last few years. Well done, morons. Yours sincerely, Pissed off Massive Attack fan

WITTY WIN

Film’ (X-Press, #1203). Apparently a “bedroom job” shouldn’t beat a big budget AFI nominee, and satire isn’t a “serious artform”. It seems that the writer feels that wit, craft, timeliness and, indeed, popularity should not be considered an achievement. If a track recorded in a home studio won WAM Song of the Year this year, as it has in the past, wouldn’t it be cause for celebration? Why the warped logic with WA films? Perhaps it is the misguided notion that a “quality film” cannot also be popular. It’s reassuring that this sentiment is not widely held, because This is Perth seems to be the only WA short film of recent memory that anyone has actually discussed, let alone seen. T h e WA S c r e e n A w a r d s h a v e absolute integrity. They are judged by industry professionals, Academy Award nominees and winners among them. I congratulate the WA Screen Awards and all local filmmakers for embracing creativity, ingenuity and innovation. May Perth filmmakers keep working hard to help inch Perth away from such regressive, conservative attitudes. Regards, Kelly Hamblin, North Perth

ANGUS & JULIA STONE Crying Devil’s Tears

After years of fleeting between stage and studio, Angus & Julia Stone have returned with their second long-player Down The Way. The brother and sister team join the West Coast Blues ’n’ Roots Festival on Sunday, March 28, and then play two sold out shows at Settler’s Tavern in Margaret River on Wednesday, March 31, and The Astor on Thursday, April 1. An all-ages show has just been announced for 4pm on April 1 at the Astor and is now on-sale. When Julia Stone’s voice joins the line she’s giggling. Laid back on the couch at her “granny and grandpa’s house” on the northern beaches of Sydney, she’s clearly enjoying the homely comforts denied to her by her occupational predicament. The clatter of teacups is clearly audible in the background. You can almost smell the scones. Her younger brother Angus is staying down the road at their mum’s house, ecstatic to be back in the surf after years of shoddy tour vans, airport lounges and new friends’ couches – all far, far away from his beloved breaks. This is the closest Angus & Julia Stone have coming to being ‘home’ in years – in a homeless kind of way. After 2007’s debut A Book Like This transformed them from bedroom hippies into certified folk stars here in Australia, the duo relocated to London and spent two years “growing up” down the motorways and autobahns of Europe. They played big stages and small stages, and made fans of Martha Wainwright, Natalie Portman and Travis’ Fran Healy. They even made eager disciples of the UK’s infamously prickly music press! In 2009 the duo started work on what would become their follow-up album. And, three continents and 13 songs later, Down The Way has arrived. Charming. Understated. Graceful. Elegant. Pastoral. There are so many words that, when knitted together, go some way to defining what Angus & Julia Stone have created with Down The Way. This is venerable porch music at its crest, created by two humble souls who can dream of nothing finer than floating from town to town delivering the good word of song. Down The Way is slow music for a fast world. Julia Stone has every right to be giggling – 2010 is destined to be the year of the Stones.

creative process into a diplomatic forum to debate whose songs make the cut… Funnily enough, I am a big fan of Angus’. I always have been! I have always loved the way he writes. It was really tough to cut down his songs. I felt like putting all of his songs on because I was so into what he was writing. So when it came to choosing the tracks I was like, ‘Well, we can’t lose this track’. And he’s the same – he fights for my songs and I fight for his. And because I am the bossier one I always win (laughs).

“NOT HAVING A HOME; THAT MAKES YOU BECOME STRONGER IN EXPERIENCING YOUR MOMENTS AS THEY COME, BECAUSE WE DON’T HAVE OUR SHIT ANYWHERE. YOU’RE JUST FREEFALLING. AND I THINK THAT’S HELPED ME BECOME A STRONGER WOMAN… I AM NOT AS SHIT-SCARED AS I USED TO BE.”

Down The Way was recorded sporadically in various studios around the world over By JULIAN TOMPKIN a fairly lengthy period of time, but is there still an underlying emotional theme to I’ve caught you relaxing at your grandparents’ this album that threads it all together and house, but where is home these days? unites the songs? Everywhere is home. We just sort of float around wherever anybody will accept us – in the spare room or on the couch. We don’t really have a home. Our home is wherever somebody welcomes us (laughs). Down The Way is a truly beautiful listen. One can only assume you’re ecstatic with the results? Thankyou. Yeah, we’re really excited about playing the new songs – it felt good when we put it together. We had a bunch to choose from, as we’ve recorded over the past couple of years. So when it came to selecting the tracks it was a tricky process for us. But now that it’s all finished I feel good about it and excited to get back out on the road. Is there a silent rivalry between yourself and Angus as to whose songs make the album? It must be difficult to move from the private,

12

It’s funny you ask that. I was recently thinking about this and it’s weird – I think I can speak for both of us - (songwriting) is not quite a literal response to a situation or a person or a space you’re in. It’s a combination of so many different things. The process for me of writing a song is the same as when I started writing a song; it hasn’t changed. I still get the same feeling. It’s never, ‘ooh, something’s happened and I’ve got to write about it’. It really does just happen in response to every single thing that’s going on in that moment and every single thing that’s built up to that moment, and it’s really hard to pinpoint where that’s coming from. The songs are always connected, even though they are written with big spaces between them and recorded in different spaces. There’re underlying themes that come back to the act of writing a song and that’s the same whenever, however, wherever, whatever’s going on. It’s that feeling of wanting to

express something. It’s been three years since you released A Book Like This and you’ve experiences so very much since. What is the difference between the Julia who wrote Wasted (from A Book Like This) and the Julia who wrote For You (from Down The Way)? Well, I think I have changed. I used to trick myself a little bit. I used to have the conversation with myself, ‘yeah, yeah I know what’s going on – I am figuring shit out’ (laughs). I felt like maybe I had a bit of control over what I was doing, and now I realise how little control I have over everything. Coming to that realisation of being pretty out of control – and I don’t mean that in a negative way – I feel more comfortable knowing that I don’t really know what’s going on. Because of that I’m much more open and available to experience things. At the beginning of touring I was really frightened and I felt like everything was really confronting, so I held on tight to the things that I knew from when I was growing up. And I think, because of all this travel and all these people’s stories and the different people we’ve met and fell for and fallen in love with, I feel like I am much more, ‘you never know what’s going to happen and what’s around the corner’. I feel a bit more open. Not having a home; that makes you become stronger in experiencing your moments as they come, because we don’t have our shit anywhere. You’re just freefalling. And I think that’s helped me become a stronger woman and, not to sound corny, make a bit of transition from being a girl into, ‘okay… I can do this’. I am not as shitscared as I used to be, which is good.

Angus & Julia Stone school, we’d been living at dad’s house and it was a really big deal for us both. But he’s definitely become more confident – quietly confident in who he is as a person. I feel weird even saying that… I respect him so much as a person because there have been so many times where I’ve been falling apart – I am very emotional and I get really nervous – and he’s always been the voice of reason and always said wise things to me, even when he was quite young. I feel that he’s helped me grow up. I think he’s probably calmed down a bit. I think we were both at first a little frazzled at not having a base and also being away from the ocean – because he’s a surfer. He lives in the water. For him to let go of going for a surf every day and having the simple life he used to love – building a chicken shed and a greenhouse – to being at an airport or being on stage, it was really confronting.

That ’s an interesting point: the new complexities of your life – the travel, the short relationships, the baseless-ness – do they alter the music? Your first album was built around simplicity – as you say, chicken sheds and the surf – but now you have these new, foreign experiences. Do they complement the music or do they complicate it?

That’s a really big question. As complicated as things get when you move around a lot, it’s still very simple for us. I think our philosophy has always been the same: to keep things slow and have a good time, and not get caught up in any of this stuff. We keep coming back to what we do, which is writing songs and playing songs. There is a big contrast between going for a surf each day and travelling around in a car Do you ever pine for a home – or don’t you on tour. But it feels like we still have the same approach to making music. When it comes to us mind being transient? sitting together and having a jam it’s two acoustic I don’t mind being transient. I have my moments, guitars and two voices, and that’s it. It doesn’t feel and it’s usually when I meet somebody I really like complicated. It’s hard when you’re close to it – you and I think, ‘it’d be nice to hang out here for a while don’t feel like anything’s changed. But maybe it and get to know this person’. But, as for now, I am has… feeling pretty happy about the adventure that’s coming this year – it’s going to be a wild one. An album is always a landmark in a band’s I know that at some point I am going to need career. What are your dreams for Down The somewhere to rest my head but at the moment Way? I am okay with it being on a different pillow… in (Laughs) I don’t have any big dreams for the a different space. album to be honest. I just dream of coming out How about Angus? He’s grown a mighty of the other end of touring and feeling healthy impressive beard, but how else has your (laughs) and having a good time. I don’t dream too big – I think we’ve done what we wanted to brother grown up? do and just playing music with Angus this year Angus has been a real champion for me. He was is going to be joy. Staying healthy will be the 20 when we moved to London so he had just left challenge. Hittin’ the town since 1985

LOU RHODES Sacrificial Lamb

Starting out as the singer for electronic duo Lamb, Lou Rhodes has since been busying herself with a solo career. Folk music has been the cornerstone of her releases to date, and her third album,One Good Thing, continues that trajectory.CHRIS HAVERCROFT spoke to the Manchester songwriter about the new record, a Lamb reunion and life as an emotional junkie. Lamb, the band that bought Lou Rhodes to the attention of the mainstream, recently reformed for a spate of shows after a six year hiatus. Rhodes says, reflecting on the tour, it was all a bit of a blur – a sign of age as opposed to rock and roll excess. Not only did the recent tour give Rhodes the chance to tread the boards in Lamb, but also to work again with Andy Barlow

who would produce One Good Thing. “As part of the process of doing the Lamb shows, I played some of my new songs to Andy and spoke to him about how I wanted to record the album,” Rhodes explains, of how Barlow found himself in the producer’s chair for One Good Thing. “He suggested that I do it at his place… and it suited the simple way that I

wanted to record the album.” Rhodes confirms that at first she was worried whether the two would be able to find a new way to work together, but she readily admits that Barlow was able to step back when needed. “In Lamb it was all 50/50; and plenty had been made about our various squabbles,” she explains. “Lamb was constantly a push and pull

CHRIS SMITHER Smither Me Timbres

Chris Smither has been a staple on the folk scene for over thirty five years. His baritone vocals and wry take on the human condition ensures that he connects with audiences wherever his travels take him. Smither plays two nights at Kulcha on Thursday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26. CHRIS HAVERCROFT reports. Smither is no stranger to living out of a suitcase. As he travels the world, he performs his originals as well as masterful arrangements of classic African American blues tunes. He has become so adept at travelling, that Acoustic Guitar magazine asked him to write an article on how best to fly with your guitar. It is suggested that Smither draws from modern poets and philosophers, but if you ask the man he can not readily identify any one philosopher that influences what he does. He is well read and is a fan of philosophy and poetry, but he contends that it is his love of language that is the driving force behind his songs. “I just try to keep paying attention to what is going on,” Smither explains. “Basically, I try to write about the human condition so as people listen to it and say, ‘yep that is me, I’ve been there’. I just want people to identify. I want to be able to write something where people can say, ‘this guy feels the same way that I do’.” Folklore has it that Smither got a leg up into the East Coast folk scene by arriving uninvited at the door of ’60s blues/folk revivalist Eric von Schmidt. The two artists hit it off and

it was von Schmidt who aided Smither a short time later in New York. It is a great tale, but lobbing up at someone’s door is the kind of behaviour that would get you arrested these days. “It is a terrible thought (the idea of being arrested for arriving unannounced) as it was the beginning of my whole career,” Smither

says. “I didn’t expect him to take me in. I was just wanted to say hello and was just hoping he wouldn’t throw me out. It wouldn’t have surprised me at all if he had but I just needed to make some kind of contact with somebody who was within that scene, so I just went with my heart in my hands.” Smither has recently turned his hand to writing fiction, in the form of a short story for a book entitled Amplifier. The paperback collects a handful of songwriters from the genre (including Renie Sparks, Laura Viers and Robbie Fulks) and sees how they fare when faced with writing a piece of work considerably longer than a song. Smither’s story was so well received that it was placed as the first story of the book; something he is chuffed to admit. “It was autobiographical in a sense,” Smither says, of his short story. “It started out a recounting of an incident that happened to me when I was driving between Austin and Dallas. I got stopped by a highway patrolman for speeding, but it was a very funny encounter. The guy was a riot – he really was. If I hadn’t have been so mad about getting a ticket I would have been laughing all the time.”

Lou Rhodes

between what each of us wanted, and in a way that is what made Lamb what it was. “First and foremost I am a songwriter and that is my priority. I guess that is what I brought to Lamb. After Lamb I really wanted the songs to breathe - I think that is the measure of a good song. In a lot of ways it can be more about what you leave out, than what you put into a song.” Rhodes set out to make a timeless record that was inspired by the works of Nick Drake. Over the three years between albums Rhodes was faced with much upheaval and the tragic loss of her sister. As someone who had previously described herself as an emotional junkie, even she could not have envisaged the depths she was to be confronted with. “I don’t think that I am anymore,” Rhodes says, of the emotional junkie tag. “I went through a process around the time of this album where my sister committed suicide, which was closely followed by a relationship – that I was trying to sustain against the odds – falling apart. The combination of those two events put me into freefall. “It took me to the deepest darkest places and part of the process of coming out the other side was that I had to go cold turkey on love. So I am no longer an emotional junkie and now I am able to experience emotional connection in a more healthy way and I don’t get hooked into old patterns.”

MACHINE HEAD Californabrasion

Grammy-nominated metallers Machine Head will be hitting Perth for the third time in three years as part of the Black Procession tour on Monday, March 22, at Metro City. Playing alongside Hatebreed, Bleeding Through and Emmure, frontman Robb Flynn tells JESSICA WILLOUGHBY why touring for more than 36 months has made him a better musician. Februar y 12, 2010, marked the third consecutive year of touring for Californian metal titans Machine Head. Intense? Hell yes, according to burly frontman Robb Flynn. Expected? Well, now that is a totally different story. “You know, we’ve always toured for a long time, Flynn chuckles down the phone line, as he stuffs himself with a burrito outside the band’s rehearsal space in Oakland. “For Burn My Eyes (1994) we toured for 16 months. Then for our last album (Through The Ashes Of Empires, 2004), we were on the road for 20 months. But did we think we’d be on the road for more than three years for The Blackening? God no (laughs). But there were so many amazing opportunities that cropped up that we just couldn’t turn down. Opportunities that have exposed us to a vastly different audience than what we are used to. I mean, we got major support for Metallica, major support for Slipknot – but

major support for Metallica man! Now that is every band’s dream and something we had to grab hold of while we could. Though Flynn admits the whole ‘touring with Metallica’ experience in 2008 was a little bit more nerve-wrecking than first thought. Rabid Metallica fans tore Machine Head apart, in other words, and made them re-assess everything they knew about being a band. Instead of feeling disheartened by the process, Flynn took the harsh feedback onboard as constructive criticism and came out a musician rejuvenated. Why, you ask? “Because we had to be on our absolute A-game every single night, that’s why, Flynn explains. “Metallica fans are one fucking intense audience; they don’t give a fuck about anything but Metallica – and that’s that. I mean, we’ve supported bands like Slayer in the past and we thought their fans were hardcore, but Metallica’s crew are a whole other level. It was

Machine Head

pretty brutal. We all basically had to throw away everything we knew about performing and start all over again to get these fans on our side. But once we started to get their fans on our side it felt like you were moving mountains. I walked away from that tour a better frontman. And, speaking for the rest of the band, it’s like we’ve been through a war together and come out victorious.

That is damn good to hear. But, apart from becoming better versed as performers, they also learnt a thing or two about their own material. And their current, Grammy-nominated album, The Blackening, was a steep curve down the road of understanding for this established quartet when it hit the live setting. “One of the things we took away from touring was that 10 minute songs are definitely not boring live, Flynn ponders for a moment. “When we wrote The Blackening it was done from a pretty selfish point of view. We didn’t do it for the radio or the fans; we just thought about what was getting us off at the time and ran with it. Man, we were more surprised than anyone when Halo clocking in at nine minutes, because it felt like a six minute song for us – just more epic (laughs).

“METALLICA FANS ARE ONE FUCKING INTENSE AUDIENCE; THEY DON’T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ANYTHING BUT METALLICA – AND THAT’S THAT‌ IT’S LIKE WE’VE BEEN THROUGH A WAR TOGETHER AND COME OUT VICTORIOUS.â€? “When we realised the length of a few of our newer songs, we thought we’d become self-absorbed arsehole musicians (laughs). So we originally decided to trim the fat, cutting a few of our lengthier songs on this album back. But they just weren’t as fun to play when they were shortened, so we thought ‘fuck it’ and just left them the way the way that they were.â€? So let us look at the facts. It has been three years since their last, devastating release. Technically, this is about the time when there is mention of something new brewing in Machine Head’s musical loins. But these lads are not rushing it. Machine Head is not the type of band that enjoys writing on tour, so they have not got much waiting in the riffage kitty just yet. Their Australian bout of shows will signal the end of gig cycle for The Blackening – finally. That is when they are going to get down to some serious writing. 2011 will be the year that album number six will hopefully be unleashed. But Flynn is not giving away much. “It really is too early to say what’s happening with new material,â€? he concludes. “Through The Ashes Of Empires was such a huge album and people didn’t know how we could top that. But we did it with The Blackening. We just had to go to a different place to do it. And we are going to have to do it again for our next release. It’s scary, not knowing where you are going – but it is exciting too. I just want to be a band that doesn’t have a blueprint, like the Black Sabbath’s, the Metallica’s and the Slayer’s. It’s the whole ‘fuck that, let’s do something else’ thing.â€?

ALKALINE TRIO

Writing Their Epitaph

Veteran Illinoisans the Alkaline Trio return to their roots for new record This Addiction, released on the band’s own brand new independent label. BEN WATSON caught up with guitarist Matt Skiba for a yarn about album number seven.

It’s seems almost inconceivable now that there was a time, not long before the formation of Alkaline Trio circa 1996, when a band’s success or failure rested very much in the hands of multinational corporations. For the record prior to this latest release, Alkaline Trio found themselves signed to one of these – Epic, a subsidiary of Sony. While the band’s time with the label was a happy one, free from the kind of horror stories one hears about from time to time, one record later the band have found themselves sans contract. But Alkaline Trio have emerged with their own imprint, Heart & Skull, in conjunction with punk’s own ‘Eddy Everywhere’, Epitaph Records’ Brett Gurewitz. And, in just three weeks, This Addiction has

Alkaline Trio become the highest charting album of their career. “Doing it on our own was a huge experience,” guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Matt Skiba begins. “We decided, after leaving Epic, that we wanted to put out a record ourselves. It wasn’t that they weren’t great to us… it was just circumstances that we were very lucky. Other bands were very unlucky, where your record gets lost or shelved and never comes out ’cause of X, Y or Z. You get fucked. And we were potentially in that situation and we never fell prey to it… we decided we were never going to let ourselves get into a situation like that again. We decided that we wanted to be able to call the shots and not worry about people at our label being fired and losing charge now (and thinking) ‘are they going to let us go?’ – having those concerns.

“I REALLY WANTED THE SONGS – OR AT LEAST MY SONGS – TO SOUND LIKE A PERSON SINGING TO THE LISTENER. THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME, AND I ALSO WANTED THE RECORD TO SOUND BIG, BUT NOT LIKE A WALL OF 18 GUITARS. IT SHOULD SOUND LIKE THREE PEOPLE PLAYING.”

“We want to put out music; we want to play songs for people. We don’t want to be worried about (that). We want business as usual and so we decided to start it ourselves, so we can control how it goes. And then Brett came along… we’re fans of each others bands and really, really good friends and we love what they’re doing with their label. So they offered us a partnership and we have close contact with them. It really is an ideal situation.” The new record not only sees the band come full circle in business terms, they’ve also elected to touch base with their roots when it comes to the production and style of the album, returning to their old stomping ground of Chicago to work with their old producer/engineer Matt Allison. “We went back to re-write a record like we did initially,” Skiba explains.“The record itself is a new thing. I think it’s a progression, but we returned to our roots more in the approach in making the record. We went back to the same studio, the same producer and we did it pretty bare-boned – just the three of us.” This also meant getting back to basics with regard to recording techniques. “I really wanted the songs – or at least my songs – to sound like a person singing to the listener,” he concludes. “That was really important to me, and I also wanted the record to sound big, but not like a wall of 18 guitars. It should sound like three people playing. And there are some bells and whistles on the record – we’ve guitar got synths on there – but for the most part we’ve got bass guitar, drums and vocals. I think it’s a big sounding record but without putting too many things on it.” Hittin’ the town since 1985

THE WHITE STRIPES Under Great Northern Lights CD / DVD

ANGUS & JULIA STONE Down The Way

XL/Remote Control

Capitol/EMI

From their inception in 1997 as candy cane blues rockers, to their emergence as grandiose pearly kings and queens of festival stages, The White Stripes have always paid painstakingly detailed attention to the visual. Given the mystique and strict iconography the duo have surrounded themselves with, never has a band been more suited to film. Under Great Northern Lights pairs a brilliantly shot feature length doco, a surprisingly candid insight into the bands 2007 tour of Canada, with a predictably blistering live CD (the band’s first), that should not only appeal to diehard fans - but also to casual listeners looking for the ‘definitive’ White Stripes release or unofficial best of. Grandiose Nova Scotian bagpipes segway into a paint-stripping rendition of Let’s Shake Hands, the band’s first ever recording, reminding the listener just how far the ‘little Detroit duo that could’ have come. Little Ghost and We Are Going To Be Friends accurately record how delirious a White Stripes crowd can get, but it is hair-raising versions of Icky Thump and When I Hear My Name that steal the show. A modern classic that effectively captures the exciting spontaneity of this determinedly backward yet fundamentally creative band. Keep it for your grandkids.

Subtlety is a rarity in the temple of contemporary song – a regrettable truth. So it’s with sincere gratitude we welcome Angus & Julia Stone’s second long-player, Down The Way. On the follow-up to 2007’s enduring A Book Like This, which went on to achieve platinum sales at home in Australia, this brother and sister duo have tapped into a new core of raw sentiment to produce an album of uncorrupted beauty. With its roots firmly set in folk’s rich tradition, this album was recorded far and wide – from Cornwall to Brooklyn; Coolangatta to London. And it’s this homeless, troubadour quality that has so endeared Angus & Julia Stone to such an appreciative audience. While it’s Julia’s whimsical vocals which so define this act, it’s Angus’ songwriting which demarcates them from the pack. Black Crow is perfectly numbing (think Just A Boy), Big Jet Plane is a tome of Paul Kelly proportions and Yellow Brick Road is undoubtedly this rising song-smith’s Neil Young-esque masterwork. But it’s in the synergy of the two where the energy is palpable – namely the front-porch elegance of Santa Monica Dream. With Down The Way Angus & Julia Stone have crafted an understated classic. Press play and dream away. _JULIAN TOMPKIN

CALLING ALL CARS Hold, Hold, Fire

THE PRETENDERS Live In London CD / DVD

Genius A.D / Shock

Liberator Music

ZZZ DOLWRZHUV FRP OL

Calling All Cars are that band that all other bands wish they were like. They moved from regional NSW to Melbourne to further their musical endeavors. They worked their arses off with a tireless touring regime that ultimately saw them on the road nationally with AC/DC, and now, they have released an absolute ball-tearing debut record. From the opening moments of Disconnect, it’s clear that Calling All Cars have arrived. There’s no gimmicks or cheesy sub-genre antics here, only top quality, good old-fashioned rock. Aside from their mammoth riffs and gutsy vocals, Calling All Cars’ strength lies in their ability to write a well structured, but most importantly catchy song. There is plenty of dynamics on Hold, Hold, Fire, but the one underlying factor is that every song kicks you right where it hurts, and leaves a long-lasting impression. There’s no point getting into a songby-song breakdown of this album, because the record as a whole is what makes it so good. Yes, there are few standout single-types, but the other songs are just as good in their own right. Hold, Hold, Fire is a monumental declaration that will undoubtedly see Calling All Cars quickly become one of Australia’s premier rock powerhouses.

T h e P r e t e n d e r ’s recorded output may not be as frequent as their live shows, but the Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers are still hitting stages hard, as Live In London, captured during their 2009 world tour, reveals. The show is said to be a 100 per cent live recording with no overdubs. It’s a strategy that may detract ever-so slightly sonically, but that’s more than made up for with feel and emotion. The band members have changed around Chrissie Hynde over the years, but she has remained steadfast to her image of dishevelled hair, dark eyeliner and old ripped jeans. She also remains a smooth performer. The footage is pristine with all the hits delivered: Talk Of The Town makes the early running and Kid, Don’t Get Me Wrong, Back On The Chain Gang a n d Stop Your Sobbing ensure the quality continues. Bonus material comes in the form of an encore with a gentle I’ll Stand By You and arguably the bands most popular tune Brass In Pocket. Live In London shows The Pretenders to be a no frills rock act with a swag of tidy tunes. It is no fluke that their success has lasted this long.

JAGA JAZZIST One-Armed Bandit

GORILLAZ Plastic Beach

Ninja Tune / Inertia

Parlophone / EMI

In t h e i r f i f te e n ye a r existence, nine piece jazz experimentalists Jaga Jazzist have become a musical phenomenon in their native Norway. Formed by siblings Lars, Line and Martin Horntveth, Jaga Jazzist had a half decade hiatus from recording before One-Armed Bandit, their much overdue fifth album. The release is as sprawling (if not more so) as you would expect from the outfit who have made a name for themselves by playing meandering instrumentals that bring a modern twist to the jazz genre. Martin Horntveth’s drumming has always been a feature and he again excels – particularly on the percussion heavy Tocatta. 220v/Spectral gives a minute of delicate piano before electronic elements take over in typical genre-bending fashion. During its seven plus minutes, the guitars and organs become so dense that you wonder how Jaga Jazzist found space to squeeze in their multitude of other instruments. Jaga Jazzist are forever pushing the envelope and have again come up with an album that will not only appeal to the jazz aficionados but also those with a penchant for prog rock, post rock, or music that appeals to the intellect as much as the feet. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

Only behind the colourful veil of Gorillaz could Damon Albarn pull off a concept album about the disposal of non-biodegradable plastic without looking like a plonker. His heartfelt concerns become slightly watered down when in the two dimensional hands of his chaotic creations, though it seems the cartoon-fab four might soon be surplus to requirements. Plastic Beach seems less like a Gorillaz album and more a venue for comfort zone-exceeding collaborations with varied artists. Forward thinking pop music makes up most of the track-listing here, especially on Stylo, featuring the preacher-like wail of Bobby Womack. Snoop Dogg mumbles his way through the forgettable Welcome To The World of The Plastic Beach, though Lou Reed’s semi-spoken parts on Some Kind Of Nature are more successful. Again, De La Soul fit the Gorillaz mould perfectly on Superfast Jellyfish, though it’s the whimsical Empire Ants that is most engaging. Despite this, nothing adds up to the accessible singles the previous records had at their nucleus, and losing your bearings across the sixteen tracks becomes inevitable. Although it’s likely the group of artists and musicians are exhausted from propping up their cardboard cut-outs, Plastic Beach just might be the start of an evolution further away from the pop act we know as Gorillaz. _ROBERT PENNEY

HELLOWEEN Unarmed

SHE S HE H E & HIM myspace.com/sheandhim

Sony Music

When is a best-of album not a bestof album? Unarmed celebrates Helloween’s 25th anniversary with a range of careerspanning tracks, but not as you know them. Unarmed is deceptive. Is this a compilation album? Well yes, but also no. So what is it? Composed by the current Helloween line-up, Unarmed takes a different spin on their classics with everything from a 7-piece orchestra to smooth jazz. Too bad the discerning punter probably won’t realise this when picking up the album. Needless to say, this is one for the fans. But will fans enjoy it? There is a certain kitsch quality to Unarmed which might appeal to devotees, k ind of like hearing a band covering themselves. The highlight has to be The Keeper’s Trilogy medley featuring Helloween, Keeper Of The 7 Keys, and The King For A 1000 Years backed by the 7-piece Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Choir for a suitably epic piece of music. But this is the only track resembling their previous work and begs the question: why not do this for the whole album?

O f ten when ac tors decide they’d like to turn their hand to music by using their star power, the results are fairly lacklustre. Scarlett Johansson’s album of Tom Waits covers, for example. Or Juliette Lewis and her…Licks. Cute-as-a-button indie starlet Zooey Deschanel manages to escape this fate, her charisma translating rather easily from the silver screen to music via her collaboration with Portland singer songwriter M.Ward. The pairing first started when M.Ward invited Deschanel to the stage during one of his concerts. Before long they’d put out an album, She & Him Volume One, a soft, folk-y collection of tunes that resonated with retro charm. Deschanel writes the songs, and is on crooning duties (and banjo), with Ward taking care of the guitar and production side of things. Their second album, Volume Two, is out on Thursday, March 18. Check out the rad clip for In The Sun, a Bee-Gees inspired number on their MySpace. A hipster collaboration that works. Key Track: In The Sun _DANIELLE MARSLAND

JIMI HENDRIX Valleys Of Neptune

myspace.com/rodstewart

Experience Hendrix / Sony

Given that Hendrix only authorised the release of three studio albums and one live recording throughout his short life, enthusiasts have long been obsessed with raking over every last outtake and rarity he left behind. Valleys Of Neptune is being billed as 12 previously unreleased studio recordings, largely recorded post-Electric Ladyland, but many of these tracks are sure to have been passed around in mysterious paper bags and at varying levels of quality since Hendrix’s death. Saying that, the release of cogent and polished new material, much in the vein of Dylan’s recent Bootleg Series, has undoubted appeal for not only die-hard fans, but ‘60s music lovers keen to learn more. In reality, however, much of Valleys Of Neptune is underwhelming. The title track has Hendrix’s signature blues groove, gypsy psych diversions and faultless, Messianic lead breaks, but the lyric feels rushed and underdone. For anyone else it’d be an instant classic, but Hendrix set his bar rather high didn’t he? An alternative version of Fire is very cool (in a nerdy bootleg kind of way) if only for Noel Redding’s skuzzy, English, back-up vocal and the omission of iconic howl: ‘Move over Rover and let Jimi take over!’. A c u r i o u s a r t i f a c t t h a t ’s b e e n masterfully re-produced - but it’s no holy grail. _DAVID CRADDOCK

EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING Rush To Relax Aarght! Records / Shock

Eddy Current Suppression Ring are at their best when they’re playing full volume, jerky, nervous guitar riffs directly from the late 1970s, complimented by perfectly amateurish sideways punk vocals, straight outta the same era. On tracks like Anxiety or Walked Into A Corner, it would be easy to compare these guys to Australian pioneers like The Saints or The Victims, although they lack the outstanding songwriting skills that made those bands so enduring. Musically, there’s a refreshing lack of ‘grunge’ on the album - the guitars crackle with minimalistic intensity but never dominate proceedings. Yet this album, recorded in six hours at the band’s rehearsal studio, is by no means a full-volume stomper. By the time third track Tuning Out kicks in, the band are exploring new sonic ground. Some of it works - indeed most of Mikey Young’s idiot savant guitar & keyboard work is totally great. B u t w h e r e B r e n d a n H u n t l e y ’s demented and equally deceptive vocals work on the more energetic tracks, he doesn’t quite have the range or dynamism to pull off the slower numbers. All in all, Rush To Relax is an honest, minimalistic yet complex collection that will grate and enthral listeners with equal veracity. _BEN WATSON www.xpressmag.com.au

Once upon a time the n a m e R o d S te w a r t d i d n’ t c o n j u r e u p shoulder pads, ill-informed disco singles and endless strings of Parmesan cheese flavoured American croon-books. In 1971 the name stood for seriously good haircuts, boozy rock ‘n’ roll and white boy rhythm and blues of the highest order. This album is a good snap-shot of a solo Rod Stewart at his finest. Sure Maggie May would later be hijacked by gratuitous wedding plays and embarrassing drunk-aunty sing-a-longs, but hip-grinding gems Every Picture Tells A Story and blues standard That’s Alright Mama are the business. There’s even some sweet harmony-laden folk on the Dylan cover Tomorrow Is A Long Time. Like Elvis – stick with the young version and you’ll be alright. No genre spreads it wings as visibly from one era to the next as that of the disaster movie. 1951’s When Worlds Collide – despite a rock solid idea – was let down a little by the technology of the day and a few dodgy matte paintings of flooded cities standing in for scenes of global catastrophe. But computers have bought the dreams of directors to life, and current Hollywood disaster movie maven Roland Emmerich (Godzilla, 10,000BC) has embraced the pixel wholeheartedly in his latest global smackdown, 2012. As if thumbing his nose at everything that’s come before, Emmerich namechecks big disaster movie ideas from the last decade. A giant wave turning a cruise liner over (from Wolfgang Petersen’s Poseidon), an entire national park exploding (the movies’ biggest explosion was recently filmed for Transformers 2), and The White House being destroyed (from his own Independence Day). ‘Your movies have one big scene,’ Emmerich seems to be saying, ‘mine’s got all of them and more’. There’s no denying the sensory thrills of watching Los Angeles fall apart and sink into the San Andreas fault or a wave so tall it spills over the Himalayans mountains, but as you’d expect there’s little room for any character or drama short of some cringe-worthy family dynamics and join-the-dots narrative. And yes, like he does in every film, Emmerich makes sure the family dog is saved. _DREW TURNEY

Old Crow Medicine Show

OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW Hammer & Sickle Nashville bluegrass, country and old-time-y band Old Crow Medicine Show will bring the sounds and stories of yesteryear to this year’s West Coat Blues ‘n’ Roots Festival on Sunday, March 28, and to their own show at Mojos on Monday, March 29. Despite being formed in 1998, Old Crow Medicine Show’s folk, country and bluegrass tinged music evokes the wild, rugged and freewheeling spirit of pre-war America. It is the triumphant music of chugging railways, bountiful grain harvests, the Appalachian Mountains, wide open planes and buzzing town fares. While the band’s original material may be inspired by tradition, their live show is in no way a cheesy nostalgia act or musical museum exhibit. Brimming with rock ‘n’ roll energy, Old Crow Medicine Show’s live act is an immediate and raw experience, as fiddler player Ketch Secor explains from the ironic surrounds of a tacky LA chain restaurant.

I guess that’s the wonderful thing about folk music, compared to pop or rock where musicians are often accused of being ‘derivative’. By its very nature, folk music gives a license to artists to be as derivative as they want. I want to see what I can do with that song Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree - I bet I can make a big hit out of that (laughs)! I love that a traditional can live through great music. What we love about that song (Land Down Under) is that tribal beat, the mystery of the song that’s laid out by that piping solo. Why do we love that? Because we’ve been hearing goat bladder sheep music, and hollowed out sheep bone songs for the past 40,000 years. People have been making music since animals were domesticated. We’ve been blowing songs like Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree since the aboriginal people set foot on your shores 40,000 years back. How can you copyright that? How can you own the ring of John Henry’s hammer, how can you own the rattle of a slave’s chains? How can you own the echoes of a Negro spiritual a song from before emancipation? These things aren’t property. They belong to all of us. This is the human story we’re talking about.

So you’re just about to fly out to New Zealand to start your tour - where are you at the moment? I’m in a corporate hell hole. It’s a Chili’s restaurant in LA with 64 televisions and something in every square foot to gawk at. As legends like Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger There’re pictures of monkeys on the wall. It’s just get older do you feel like you have a duty to carry the torch? horrific. It’s not a good way to get to Australia. I don’t think that we will ever carry When people ask about the style or originality it they way that the generation before us, and of your music you often evoke a wonderful even the generation before that, carried it. Those thing that Pete Seeger said - that you feel guys – Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Little that you’re just ‘another link in the chain’ in Richard, Chuck Berry – they carried the torch terms of the American tradition. Is that sill into a brave new world. The world has changed. It was dark, then there was first light – Chuck how you feel? I’ve been spouting off that line for a Berry was there holding a match. It’s even been while, and last year we met Pete, in the year that a long time since Abbey Road now. I feel like he turned 90. It was just further proof to me that we’re in the shadow of the great illumination of we really are all forging new links in a chain that American which was so bright that it lit up the goes back long before Pete Seeger. Long before whole world with our music, culture and art. I Huddie Leadbetter - Elvis is a link in that chain don’t know if we’ll ever reclaim that – but the and Bob Dylan is a link in that chain - it goes way fire is still burning in us and we’ve got to keep on back to the times of the convicts arriving on it lit. the shores of Australia bringing songs from the Even though all of that great work was done, streets of London to a new world. do you think there is still new ground to In many ways your song Wagon Wheel, which break? I think it’s all been said before, but I is a reinterpretation or ‘finishing off’ of a Bob Dylan bootleg you heard, is a living example think the best way you can say it now is with a of that idea isn’t it? It’s got one foot in the foot in the door and a foot out there in the yard. You’ve got to arm yourself with the language past and one in the present. That’s a song that was written over a of the tradition – the old way of doing things – period of about 80 years before it got finished. you’ve got to learn those ways. They’re all we’ve Bob Dylan gave the credit to Rock Me Mama, a got… Boys and girls are going to get together song he recorded in the ’70s, to Arthur Crudup. and drive down to the beach in South Gippsland He was a blues singer from Memphis from the or Western Australia, and after the working day early rock ‘n’ roll era. He was credited as writing is done they’re gonna have a couple of beers, That’s Alright Mama and a couple of other songs they’re going to make out in that car, listen to that became part of Elvis’s repertoire. He wrote songs on the radio and that’s going to happen a song called Rock The Baby, which don’t sound for a long time to come. As long as there’re still nothing like Dylan’s Rock Me Mama or My Wagon kids making out listening to the radio – well Wheel. But before all that Arthur Crudup gave there better be fuckin’ good songs! They better credit to a blues singer in Chicago called Big Bill be worth making out to. They better be worth Broonzy – back in the ’20s. We’re talking about the beauty of that woman. They better be worth 1928 when the song was recorded by Big Bill, the curves of that car. and now it’s 2010. That song will be 100 years _JOCK ANTHONY old before I’m 40. 24

MAX MANUS Man Max

BROTHERS Turgid Triangle

Directed by Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandbergn Starring Aksel Hennie, Ken Duken

Directed by Jim Sheridan Starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Sam Shepard

Like The North Face, the-mountain climbing film that screened as part of the Lotterywest Festival Films season some weeks back, Max Manus benefits greatly from authentic values, its intimate focus on its subject and its outright European-ness. Max Manus is a bona fide Norwegian war hero. During the German occupation of Norway from 1939-45, he was a firebrand of the Norwegian resistance – his actions saved thousands of his countrymen’s lives yet he was often haunted by his own survival, as in missionupon-mission his friends and cohorts in battle were killed. We first encounter Max as a hotheaded young solider. He flashbacks continually to when he served in Finland on the Sala front against the Russians (at a point where the Germans were allies). When the soldiers returned from the front they learnt that the Germans were now the enemy and while resistance was shown Norway was soon to fall and became occupied territory for the next five years. Max soons joins the Oslo Gang, a passionate yet naïve resistance movement. They have some minor wins, but soon learn the hard way that their cockiness is not only unearned, but downright dangerous. Yet as the Oslo Gang becomes more sophisticated in their approach – an illegal newspaper becomes a powerful propaganda tool – their mission mounts in risk. At this point Max’s cunning finds him adept at escaping the enemy. Even when he is caught he hurls himself out of a second-storey window in an effort to escape. He ends up being detained in hospital and duly escapes yet again upon near-recovery, thought the doctor and nurse he leaves behind do not share his fortunate fate. Having escaped the Germans, Manus flees to England whereupon he joins the Free Norwegian Forces, meeting up with his one-time Oslo Gang leader. Like many of Max’s colleagues, he too will soon meet his end during an act of espionage that the hero survives. Eventually, Max returns to fight the good fight in Norway, lifting the efforts of others by example and launching an assault on the

Aksel Hennie stars in Max Manus German battleship, Donau, possibly the greatest of his wartime achievements. Max Manus could well end up being remade in Hollywood, such is the nature of its grand tale – eventual victory against an unsurmountable enemy (with explosions). Swedish directors, Rønning and Sandbergn, however, concentrate on the ‘small’ parts of the story as much as they do the large. The CGI effects employed in this film are the most advanced thus far used in Norwegian cinema, but importantly the relationships and camaraderie in Max’s life are explored (his widow and friend Sønsteby both consulted on the production), and the Germans (particularly Max’s nemesis, Norwegian Gestapo Chief, Siegfried Fehmer) are portrayed as adversaries, not the usual overly simplistic evil-overlords. Such values render this film as far from a WWII-era Diehard as one could imagine. In that context, one could say Max Manus a war movie for everyone.

film work in a Hollywood context would certainly involve some concessions, but, for a film so laden with potential for dramatic tension, the outcome is fairly ordinary. The soppy guitar soundtrack If you’re looking for emotional impact but scores the emotion far too heavily, and the appreciate a bit of directorial restraint in your relationship between the ‘brothers’ isn’t as honest filmwatching, don’t look too hard in Brothers, the or enthralling as it could be; mostly thanks to new film from In The Name Of The Father and In Maguire’s overacting; Gyllenhaal is OK. The scenes in Afghanistan are clichéd America director Jim Sheridan. The triangle between Grace, Tommy on the original. Well, except for a song by U2. Intensely bereaved, Grace and her daughters attempt to rebuild their lives without the ‘rock’ of their family. In a surprise to all, Tommy picks up his socks and turns out to be quite the surrogate Sam. The kids dote on him and Grace forms an emotional attachment with him. Tommy seems to find a new purpose as a family man and enjoys everybody’s newfound appreciation of his existence in Sam’s absence. However, a few months after his funeral, Sam comes home. Turns out he was interned as a POW all this time in a Taliban-led camp, and didn’t really die after all. The family’s initial joy at Sam’s prodigal return is a peverse one: he acts psychotic towards all in his path, battling from the posttraumatic stress of his experience in Afghanistan. Grace struggles to emotionally reconnect with Sam, who won’t budge on the idea that she’s slept with Tommy. Tommy, meanwhile, earnestly attempts to draw his brother out of his depression, despite his obvious disappointment that Sam’s return has fairly mucked up his newly found domestic bliss. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Toothless Tiger

Directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders Starring Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill, American Ferrera, Kristen Wiig Having grown up in a time when being poked and prodded by things jumping off the screen just wasn’t at all stimulating, I’ve never been that much of an advocate for 3D. In Jaws 3D we were supposed to believe the killer fish was heading straight for our seats (what a joke that was!). In Freddy’s Dead the filmmaker wanted us to wriggle and worm in an effort to escape Freddy Krueger’s razor-sharp glove as it reached past the screen. And in Friday The 13th Part III it was supposed to seem as if Jason’s knife was coming terrifyingly close to our own skulls – as well as Crispin Glover’s. Thing is, nobody believed any of it – let alone believed there was any benefit to 3D. If anything, all those red-and-blue glasses did was evoke ear chafing and headaches! When James Cameron announced he’d be bringing back 3D you could hear the groans of those that grew up in the ‘80s echo around the globe - the last thing we needed was for filmmakers to reintroduce the gimmick! 3D had never worked, why would it work now? Unfortunately, that’s exactly what has happened. And one could list a dozen or so 3D films that have been released, or are about to be, that are destined to be stinkers for the pure reason that they’re all style (or are they?), no substance. James Cameron’s Avatar wasn’t one of them. In fact, it’s the best 3D film ever made. Like Avatar, How To Train Your Dragon has utilised the

How To Train Your Dragon advances in 3D technology only in an effort to aid its already-strong story. The computer-animated film, directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, is based on a 2003 children’s novel about a young Viking (a skinny red-head with courage issues, he’s unlike any other Viking) who for eons has been begging his macho dragon-slaying father to teach him how to kill the fire-breathing enemy. Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel in the film) shoots a dragon down from the sky. When he rushes to the forest to see the dragon’s immobile frame, he discovers a not-so-evil creature that’s more Hooch than Cujo. Needless to say, young Hiccup ultimately decides that he’s not going to be doing any dragon-slaying and instead, befriend the race – in particular, the only mildly-wounded Toothless. When Hiccup’s father (voiced by Gerard Butler), and his countrymen discover that the youngster has not only befriended a dragon but has a way into the dragon’s nest, they fuel their fury into an industrious mission that’ll thwart the dragons forever - unless, of course, Hiccup and Toothless can stop them. This, like Avatar, looks amazing! The 3D makes you feel like you’re riding a dragon through the clouds, having fire blown at you from a prehistoric monster’s nostrils and, at times, worryingly falling from the sky. This is exactly how it’s done! The visuals here are, quite simply, beautiful! 3D can’t be a substitute for a good story and, thankfully, this one has a bonza one. Laughs, adventure, thrills and a gorgeous message – this is family entertainment at its best. And, like Shrek, don’t be surprised if How To Train Your Dragon is a film both kids and parents return to time and time again - it’s got a timeless feel about it. If only all 3D movies could be as visually stunning and emotionally stirring (at the same time) as How To Train Your Dragon cinema screens wouldn’t have been stained by such deceptive fare as The Final Destination. _CLINT MORRIS

FOTOFREO FRINGE

WA’s biggest photography festival, FotoFreo, returns to walls of art galleries, bars and restaurants this week, showcasing the work of a truly comprehensive array of photographers. Established in 2002, FotoFreo has grown exponentially since its inception, now offering hundreds of exhibitions and fringe events to appease even the fussiest photo fan. X-Press has taken the hard work out of choosing which shows to go to with this handy guide to some of the exhibitions that make up the festival’s Fringe component. For more information on what’s happening and where, check out fotofreo.com

SUPERBIA

The lawn-bowl loving members of the North Freo Bowls Club have invited the FotoFreo Fringe festival to take over their club premises in coming weeks, with photo media artist Bo Wong set to adorn the Club’s walls with stunning photographs that make up her Superbia exhibition. Down the line from Northam where she’s teaching indigenous families about photography, Wong shares her excitement about the impending exhibition. “I chose the North Freo Bowls Club initially because it hasn’t been used as an exhibition space before and because it has such a fantastic vibe. We’ll be playing barefoot bowls on the day of the opening and you can bring your own food and cook it on the barbeque, the beer is cheap, it has such a nice vibe, I love it there! “The members are really really pleased – they want the North Freo Bowls Club to be more of a community hub. They want to have art shows and music there – it’s a fantastic spot which is why I chose it for my exhibition.” When asked what inspired Superbia, Wong reveals that it was a combination of family, place and architecture.

Perth From Space by Jackson and Gene Eaton

PERTH FROM SPACE

Brothers Jackson and Gene Eaton team up for Perth From Space, an exhibition that explores the urban landscape and the art of portraiture, at Free Range Gallery. Upon returning home from a stint of overseas travel, the Eaton brothers found themselves with a new perspective on life in Perth, the world’s most isolated capital city.

Intrepid photographer Darren Smith found himself intrigued by the concept of bohemianism while travelling through Europe recently, resulting in an exhibition of photographs that explore this lifestyle and those who choose to live it. Taking place outdoors at 91 High Street in Fremantle’s West End, Le Campement observes gypsies who have dumped their caravans for mobile phones and permanent residences, telling private and public stories through beautiful photographs. _EMMA BERGMEIER

Superbia by Bo Wong

“I have a background in architectural photography and this show is partially images of buildings. I have quite a few generations of family who have lived in the South Fremantle area where I now live. I photographed some of the houses that my great grandparents and grandparents lived in. I also photographed other buildings around Fremantle; ones that I think are quite beautiful in a non conventional sense but extremely beautiful to me. I’m playing with the idea of things that are in your memory and in your past. I’m also entangling it with photos of other buildings that are unrelated but the viewer doesn’t necessarily have a sense of where the truth of my history, my family or my memory could be. “The idea behind it is that our memory is fluid but buildings are something that are static. Photography has its roots in truth and truthmaking and this is a photography exhibition that questions that. It says you can make new memories and you can choose what kind of photos you take. You can make your own memories.” Wong’s excitement about the FotoFreo Fringe festival is palpable; it’s clear that she, and the photography community in general, are extremely excited about all the exhibitions set to take place in Fremantle and beyond.

FASHION BLUSHING BEAUTIES

She Seldom Blushes

Having only been open four months now, vintage store She Seldom Blushes is the newest kid on the block in Fremantle, satisfying the desires of those with a healthy appetite for vintage. Owned and run by retro aficionado Fern Vallesi, the She Seldom Blushes store is decked out like a teenager’s bedroom from the ’60s, making it the perfect place for lovers of eras past to shop. “My dream was to create a shop that could be an outlet for my own jewellery, but I also wanted to fill it with other things I love,” says Vallesi of her store. “So, I stock the work of other fabulous local jewellers I have met along the way, pre-loved and vintage clothing and accessories, and new things made from old things or with a really retro edge.” When questioned about the origins of her label and the store’s name, Vallesi reveals that the inspiration came from a chap named H.L. Mencken. “I am fascinated by the flapper style and attitude and this has often influenced the jewellery I create. When I was looking for a new label name, I happened upon an article written by H.L. Mencken. He wrote, ‘The Flapper of 1915 has forgotten how to simper, she seldom blushes, and it is impossible to shock her’. The moment I read the words I knew they were perfect – ‘she seldom blushes’ – not only do they have a beautiful sound when spoken but they conjure an image of a supremely confident and worldly young woman who is perhaps just a little bit feisty!” In addition to stocking her own creations and vintage threads, Vallesi’s Fremantle store also offers up designs by Leah Tarlo, Helena Bogucki, Quiff, Nastalie, Rebound, Beci Orpin, Limedrop, Miss Brown and Ecococoon. As a special treat for X-Press readers, Vallesi has kindly offered a 10 per cent discount on jewellery designs by She Seldom Blushes, so be sure to pop in to shop 5 in the Atwell Arcade (off the High Street Mall), to make the most of this tantalizing offer.

Tom Drummond Perth funk, soul and house producer Tom Drummond is going from strength to strength, with an EP out on Shak Digital and releases lined up for numerous labels. Initially starting out studying jazz at WAAPA, Drummond’s now firmly grounded in the funk and hip hop scene, having played alongside the likes of TZU and Katalyst. He’s also a dab hand on the decks, and DJs across Perth, everywhere from Geisha, to Llama Bar and more. Salt takes a few minutes to get to know this talented guy. How did you first get your start in producing? A mate of mine back in highschool introduced me to some production software. Since then I have been hooked. How would you describe your music style? I have two main genres that I normally produce - jacking house and funky breaks. Basically, sampled funk with some harder beats underneath. What has been one of the most memorable experiences you have had to date as a producer/ DJ? As a DJ - I did a few gigs in Europe last year, that was good fun! As a producer - having one of my tracks licensed to a One Love compilation was a good boost.

Best set you ever saw and why? Seeing Flow Dynamics do his live set for the first time was a great experience. I just started dancing around like a complete idiot and thinking ‘what the hell is this music!?’, which turned out to be funky breaks

All the way from Adelaide comes DJs extraordinaire Loot & Plunder, ready to lay down a thick, juicy slab of rump-shakin’ tunes at Ambar’s Japan4. Late night party specialists, these boys combine baltimore, crunk, electro, disco, indie, hip hop and ghetto rave tunes will a whole bunch of super-weird props and naughty onstage antics! Saturday, April 10 at Ambar. Support from Japan4’s regular rad party music specialists. $15 on the door from 10pm, otherwise get in early at www.boomtick.com.au.

EDU-KATION Friday, March 26 sees South American dude Edu K blaze into Knowledge Monthly. One time pin up boy for Brazil’s baile funk sound, Edu K has moved through genres like fidget house, new rave, rap and bass and now on to the rather contemporary tribal/tropical/tech house sound. Expect a night of audio madness! Support from Lightsteed, Clunk, Pussy Helton and Micky Juice. Upstairs $10 before 11pm, $15 thereafter. The bar downstairs will be open from 8pm (free entry) for tapas, pizza and cocktails.

What track can’t you get enough of at the moment? The Illout, Kenny Dope Who do you rate on the local scene? My occasional producing partner, JMC, is doing great things, as well as Randa K who has been signed to Freestyle Records recently. Where can we catch you DJing/performing next? I play house at Wolfe Lane bar every Friday from 8pm-10pm, and funky breaks at the Newport front bar on Saturdays from 8pm12:30am. Come say hi! Any releases coming up soon? I have releases out in the next few months on Goodgrove Recs, Manmade Recs, Mindtravel, Guesthouse and Lingo Recordings. A regular guest vocalist on Perth hip hop albums, local singer Naomi Pietracatella, also known as Porsah Laine, is finally getting her chance to shine with her debut album Feel This. JOSHUA HAYES speaks with her about her debut and this week’s album launch.

Over the last seven years Pietracatella has contributed her ethereal vocals to the choruses of dozens of songs, including Downsyde’s breakthrough hit El Questro and Drapht’s Who Am I? However, her solo career began four years ago, in her words, by accident. “It started at a Downsyde gig where I did a chorus and this drunken guy came up and said sarcastically ‘can you sing a full song?’” she laughs. “So then I said ‘yes I can and I’ll show you I can’.” Pietracatella was first inspired to sing by her older sister. “I guess in my childhood it was the times when my family were most happy, was when she would sing, so I have very fond memories of it,” she says. Her sister also introduced her to influential singer songwriters like Janis Joplin, Janis Ian and Kate Bush. As a result, Pietracatella grew up thinking of songs in her head, but until that point had never committed them to paper. “My earliest memories of writing Ewan Pearson songs were on the swings out in the backyard, and I could write it all in my head, remember it “Yeah, I spent quite a lot of time on it, gathering the Porsah Laine tracks, thinking about with the ordering and how it and sing it,” she says. “The songs have always fits together. There’s so many mixes around these been there, I’ve just never put them down until I always knew very early that I wanted to do days, with podcasts and downloads, you actually now.” something bigger with my life and help people; think to yourself ‘what is the point?’ doing a mix CD, She star ted writing prolifically, that was my drive behind wanting to do music, but I’m glad Kompakt still believe in doing them resulting in Feel This. Downsyde’s Dazastah was to help people. The new mix for Kompakt is “The idea behind the album was, up buying a whole studio, I worked three jobs different again, with a more stark, minimal vibe. pretty much, everybody has a rough life. With this Kompakt those problems.” FEEL THIS [INDEPENDENT] one, I wanted it to be very driven by harmony, but “Before I started listening to hip hop I SATURDAY, MARCH 20 @ THE CIVIC I also wanted it to change tempo and mood a bit guess you could say I felt ignorant about things. throughout, and to be very intensely melodic. It’s quite an honour to get this opportunity to do this mix, so the pressure was on, so you know, I just wanted it to be really good!” This intelligence and thought that Pearson puts into his work sets him apart. Coming up towards 40, he’s an accomplished sort, with experience in many aspects of the music business. Hijack’s Jack Union production imprint is going from strength to He has a Masters degree in philosophy, and as strength. He’s his Perth show. released a few mix CDs, many of his own tunes, as well as a plethora of remixes. He’s produced The Life for Hijack, AKA underground house Rapture, the new record by rising indie-dance stars champion Jon Chant, started behind the wheels Delphic, Sydney lads Lost Valentinos’ debut (“I was of steel – he was an avid fan of Chicago house. just round their place listening to some of their “Well general house music, really,” he chimes, new stuff”) and has just been in the studio with before continuing: “But then I started doing Tracey Thorn (of Everything But The Girl) producing bootlegs and edits of my tracks and sets. I think her new solo album – he’s a man of many talents, it was a small label in England called On the Brink Records that picked me up. I was one and is obviously in-demand. “Tracey’s album was finished last year, of their first signings, their second was The but last week we were filming a live performance, Crookers!” Serious company huh? So no doubt Tracey and Ben [Watt] on guitar, it’s the first time they’ve played together in awhile, so it’s quite then, he is taking things far more seriously now. special, and I just play a bit of keyboards. I’ve always “I had to,” says Jon. “When the guy at the label had quite broad tastes. The idea of only producing heard it, I didn’t really have a choice but to take dance records… is quite terrifying really! It’s nice things more seriously!”. In terms of influences, working with other people, trying to get the best Hijack claims it was all about funk and house. “Early on anyway, I started being out of them, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the one genre – maybe I can take some ideas I have influenced by a lot of that Chicago vibe; and a from an electronic perspective and put them into lot of it was through my dad. I had heard a lot of that type of music and it was quite prominent a different context.” A prolific producer, Pearson is known in my production so that was a big driving force. “But it was also a fair bit more than for his remixes, having put his magic touch on Depeche Mode, The Chemical Brothers, Slam, that; I like the tempo for example; it’s a style of Goldfrapp, Ladytron, Freeform Five and Franz music anyone can enjoy and people can really Ferdinand – he’s very particular over the tracks be innovative creating it. All house music is easy he chooses – they must have a certain je ne sais to mix together; it’s a broad genre but there are quoi that inspires him. Now he has artists lining a lot of genres within it, so that makes it great up for that special Pearson re-rub - though he has as well.” Jon also has his fingers in a number knocked many back, as he feels if he can’t improve a track or get something worthy out of it, he’d of pies from a production point of view. Most notably, via his Jack Union imprint. rather not bother. “Basically, I started the label and While he has produced under various aliases including Maas, World of Apples and Partial then did songs on Jack Union and Potty Arts (with Al Usher), Pearson seems to enjoy the Mouth – they were sort of the main two. But Hijack aspects of collaboration, as opposed to flying Jack Union started out in 2006 as a way of solo. “I’ve always been interested in production, putting out music that I produce as well as up – one is of a Switch track which is coming out on Jack Union and in two weeks time ever since I was a kid, but it’s taken me years music my friends are producing. I try to keep and years to get the point where I can produce it tongue-in-cheek but funky and groovy at there is another remix of a track by Daniel records for other people. I really enjoy producing the same time. On the label, we’ve got that Carro; I actually used to produce with him and remixing, and working with other people – Daniel Carro EP and another one from The and we did produce together but amicably it’s great to have that starting point, not having Potatoheads – Tommy Q and Duble – coming up. decided to do our own thing and that has “I’m pretty excited too about releasing worked really well.” Finally, the lad is coming to work from a blank sheet of paper. But I had to first learn to make records for myself, and then as a track by Lil Devious – one I used to play back to Australia shortly to kick logistics. “I really enjoyed it last time in Australia a remixer... it’s been quite a meandering journey.” when I was younger - I relicensed that to Hopefully he’ll meander our way soon, come out on Jack Union, which was cool. I’m it’s a great country and I can’t wait to get back there. The crowds are really cool and I hope but until then, we can be proud of Pearson’s choice also producing another EP for Jack Union which will be out in about three weeks; I’ve to play plenty of music people haven’t heard to grace us with another genius mix. got a couple of collaborations which are before, either.” EWAN PEARSON going to be EPs on the label as well - one is HIJACK WE ARE PROUD OF OUR CHOICES with a guy called Boogie.” Continues Chant: THURSDAY, APRIL 1 @ VILLA, HIGHGATE [KOMPAKT/STOMP] “I’ve got some other remixes coming

RAEKWON KILLA BEES ON ATTACK RAEKWON/Fdel/Buda/Symphony Saturday, March 12, 2010 Villa, Highgate

Kicking off to a fairly vacant crowd, local Fdel did his best to hype up the early arrivals, but seemed as though most were more interested in the pre-gaming at the bar or busting out their own freestyles in a corner of the smoking garden. Buda glided through a set of old school hits, sneakily dropping Scribe as much as possible, which didn’t showcase an interested approach. A heavy warm up of Wu Tang tracks ignited the crowd in an overwhelming chant for the man of the hour. Raekown stepped on stage, fairly unassuming, and launched into his most recent critically acclaimed track, Kiss The Ring. 2009 was a good year for Raekwon, thanks to the highly anticipated release and astounding success of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx pt. II, so he knew he had a captive audience. He returned the favour to his audience with a set based on the original classics, classics that he delivered with unparalleled lyrical flair. In a throw back to the good old days, when all nine members were with us, the familiar baseline of C.R.E.A.M echoed, causing a rush of the last stragglers to bounce in and bow their heads to one of the greatest MCs of our time. It’s funny what type of crowd a Wu Tang solo gig attracts - it was fairly obvious who showed up for a night of boozing, mischief and bragging rights; and who has a genuine interest

the art that is hip hop. It’s a shame these beerdrenched, middle class guys with massive attitude seemed visibly confused - someone needed to remind them this is Perth, not Brooklyn. Raekwon was forced to stop the show twice, in order to calm vicious fights. Once the rough riders were rightfully escorted elsewhere, Raekwon took us on a lyrical journey dropping bits and pieces from his history in the game; including single verses from Can’t It All be Simple, then another off Glaciers of Ices. He glided through a repertoire that was Only Built 4 Cuban Linx I heavy, leaving new fans wishing for a bigger taste of its follow up. Testing out the punters’ knowledge of early west coast hip hop, Raekwon jumped into the first verse of Slick Rick’s classic Children’s Story, causing almost no reaction at all. Reading the crowd, he moved on to Eye 4 An Eye, which brought back the raw energy. As expected there was a big shout out to Wu Tang founder, Ol Dirty Bastard, who died of an overdose in 2004. Raekwon had the entire club chanting again, ‘RIP ODB’- a suitable tribute to say the least. After a two hour set (double what was scheduled) Raekwon slowly left the stage, only to return with CDs for a small crowd that gathered to the front, hoping for a glimpse. After graciously posing for pictures, signing shirts and shaking hands, Raekwon made quickly up the stairs…a bevy of local ladies in tow.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB Tourist History [Etcetc/Kitsuné]

Raekwon YASMIN SHERIFF

The landfill-indie/dance sound of the last ten years already seems to be bleeding into 2010 with this much-hyped debut from Two Door Cinema Club. The Belfast trio borrow the urgency of Bloc Party and The Futureheads’ spikey arrangements and singer Alex Trimble sounds a dead ringer for Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. Despite some Editors-like guitar lines, Two Door Cinema Club feature sunny and danceable melodies that maintain a similar structure over the ten tracks. There are some catchy tunes here, especially as the three singles Something Good Can Work, This Is The Life, and Undercover Martyn sit back to back, though at times Tourist History feels a little watered down. U n l i k e t h e i r p e e r s , t h e r e ’s nothing overly enchanting or challenging h e re. W i t h a d r u m - m a c h i n e o n e ve r y track, it seems this album was written t o b e d a n c e d t o, a n d n o t m u c h e l s e . A handful of decent singles, though the rest is just too generic to mean anything substantial in the new decade.

Glasgow duo Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie, AKA Silicone Soul, are most widely known for their output on the revered Soma imprint, but they ’ve also been running their own Darkroom Dubs label since 2003. Here, they unveil their second compilation, showcasing some of their finest sounds. If you’re prepared to go on the journey it’s a worthwhile purchase indeed: a collection of dark, dubby and often broody techno and progressive works, it’s menacing at times, but also quite melodic and beautiful if you’re willing to soak up the details. The first half is a deep affair indeed, but the tempo finally picks up with Jet Project’s Time Flies, leading into a final run that loosens the pressure a little bit, taking a few trippy, psychedelic turns before winding things up with some pumping progressive in its final moments, courtesy of Silicone Soul themselves. Darkroom Dubs Vol. 2 is a beautifully textured and incredibly nuanced slice of deep house, progressive and techno, well worth the effort if you’re prepared to go along with its brooding disposition.

While no Protection, we got Teardrop, with Topley Bird shining again on vocal duties. It was a great set-list, making you realise just how many quality tunes they have in their arsenal. The title track from Mezzanine was another highlight, as was the album’s big single, Angel, that saw Andy out front, weaving his magic - his unique, ethereal vocals holding the audience captive under his spell, as the band exploded into life. Another great voice, in the shapely form of Deborah Miller, took the stage for Safe From Harm, and she made the track her own. For a mature woman, she oozed sexuality and her soaring vocals tugged at the heartstrings. Inertia Creeps wound up the set proper, before Daddy G returned to stage, sincerely thanking the crowd, and kicking into Splitting The Atom – with its melancholic, marching beat overset with Daddy G’s deep, dark crooning and menacing tone and Andy doing his thang on the chorus. The way they conjure up such a dark and sinister atmosphere, whilst still maintaining a euphoric feeling is mesmerising. U n f i n i s h e d Sy m p a t h y s a w t h e magnificent Miller return to the stage to belt out the Massive anthem, before the fitting finale of Karmacoma. A truly special and intimate evening with the Bristol massive that left all in attendance awestruck at the sheer brilliance of a group who are still at the top of their game. _ALFRED GORMAN

THE BIG DADDY MASSIVE ATTACK / Martina Topley Bird Kings Park Friday, March 12, 2010 It’s been seven years since Bristol’s finest were in town, but on Friday, touring their brilliant return to form, Heligoland, they returned, with a lot of memories and expectation to live up to. And live up to it they did, and then some. As the sold out crowd flooded in on this balmy evening, keen to secure their piece of grass, local DJ Travis laid down some appropriately chilled, broken beats, before the lovely Martina Topley Bird. First coming to prominence as Tricky’s girlfriend and vocalist, she has developed into quite a unique talent. The moment she took the

stage, her charisma, soft, lilting voice and delicate arrangements were like a fresh, tropical breeze blowing through the night. Swapping between keyboards, vibraphone and guitar, she created a warm, melodic and sparse ambience to intone over, charming the crowd with a mix of songs from her two solo albums, and dedicating Baby Blue to an old school mate in the crowd she hadn’t seen in 20 years. By the time Massive Attack took to the stage, anticipation had reached fever pitch, and the mature and diverse crowd howled their appreciation into the night sky. Backed by an impressive and tight band, including two drummers, keyboards and guitars, 3D stepped up to the mic and kicked in with the dark and grungy

sounds of new track, United Snakes. Topley Bird’s return for Babel, was also greeted with applause, but it was the arrival of Daddy G that raised the biggest cheers. With his tall, ominous figure behind the mike, they launched into Risingson. Then, more cheers as long time vocalist and Rasta veteran Horace Andy stepped up for Girl I Love You. The hypnotic, digital visuals were a stark, synthetic backdrop to the band’s music, and an interesting contrast to the natural environment that surrounded us. A huge and impressive LED screen had random numbers, binary codes, drugs, formulae and various subversive and political propaganda running across it, like a stock listing throughout the show.

THE FULL NELSON

BRIGHT BROOKLYN LIGHTS

TIMOTHY NELSON AND THE INFIDELS / The Joe Kings / Wolves / Goodnight Tiger / Dan Crook Norfolk Basement Saturday, 13 March, 2010

which made it impossible not to move. The sound itself is blues all the way and, yes, the boys aren’t afraid of the pentatonic scale; but their show isn’t about the new, it’s about the delivery. When it comes to that, The Joe Kings deliver like an overnight express, especially when the lead guitarist jumps off stage or cranks out a solo that can only be described as ‘nuts’. If you like rock, blues or just a mad time, you must see this band‌if only to check out the vocalist’s Dingo Flour tat. Aaaah, Fremantle. Yo u c o u l d t h e t e l l p i e c e - d e resistance were nearly upon us as people were clambering around the basement’s support structures to get a view of the impending set from Timothy Nelson and the Infidels. It was no wonder; this band has all the elements you need to build an immediate rapport with an audience. Nelson is a sensational lyricist, narrating melancholic tales through simple, yet soulful, songs. In a time when some of pop culture’s most popular lyrics are ‘ra ra ra ra raaa’, Nelson re-injects beautiful sentimentality with an endearing Australian affectation. Yet it’s not all ‘softly, softly’, Nelson and crew soon picked up tempo and as punters were yelling along with words the band threw down some rock. Even though it started to get more humid than a bain-mairie, it was nothing a cold beer couldn’t fix. According to Nelson, there were even some ‘Perthonalities’ among the crowd too, Rusty Gates was rumoured to be attending but this was neither confirmed nor denied. Nelson will be a Perthonality in his own right soon enough, especially judging by his easy manner when he hops behind a keyboard. Reminiscent of a young Tim Freedman, Nelson did a bang-up job, both with charm and guitar even when he stripped the set back to him and Luke Dux (of The Floors fame) on guitar. One particular set highlight was Let Her Go, the kind of track you want to play to your mates the next day and also the unequivocal evidence that this State produces some of the best original music in the country. _LAURA GLITSOS

The Nor folk Basement is becoming synonymous with grade A, local and original blues, folk and country and Saturday night was a perfect example of why. Audience members at this gig were also given an extra international treat from of the land that brought us chips and cricket, thanks to the opening act - Englishman Dan Crook. The singer/songwriter not only presents a fine acoustic show, he also knows how to market himself. On entry, Crook’s very cool shirts were available and his single Paddling Upstream was on sale for an easy dollar. Why wouldn’t you grab one? Acts like this make it a pleasure to support independently touring musos. Goodnight Tiger casually veered left in the next set, following dream-like melodies and weaving reveries. Originally a two-piece, comprising Jill Chrisp and Perrin Date, the duo recently added members and now the four-piece, play with a lot of harmony and dynamics - not too mention the lead vocalist’s tinkling of extra trinkets like xylophone, maracas and tambourine. A set highlight was Sell It To Me and Goodnight Tiger certainly did. Heading in a more amped direction, Wolves were up next with a darker, more experimental approach. There is a lot of character in this band as well as an unmistakable, seething intensity. If you catch them, be sure to watch the guitarist, who has his own entertaining style which perfectly suits the ambience of the material. With heaps of bass effects and strikingly mastered electric violin, Wolves dabble in the liminal. While they probably get likened to the accessibility of Placebo, they are at their best when exploring the more experimental elements of their songwriting. It really started to heat up, quite literally, when The Joe Kings hit the boards. Despite already being fairly packed in the basement on this balmy night, humidity radiated as The Joe Kings played in a way

THE DIRTY PROJECTORS / Pikelet The Rosemount Hotel Saturday, March 13, 2010 With their recent album, Bitte Orca getting excellent traction in Australia, New York’s Dirty Projectors were always going to cause quite the stir on this, their first Australian tour. While their East Coast shows have attracted sell-out crowds, Saturday night’s turn-out seemed a little malnourished for the current buzz around the band, thus allowing a comfortable viewing experience and a chance to get intimate with one of art pop’s leading lights. In many ways the band attracts both casual music consumers and the music elitists, those wanting the ‘nowest; sounds yesterday. While opening to such a crowd would be a daunting proposition for most, Melbourne’s Pikelet attacked the curious crowd with a kaleidoscope of looped beats and sampled vocal harmonies. I n s o l o m o d e, P i k e l e t ( E v e l y n Morris) built each bed one layer at a time manipulating and twisting each part in on itself and then around the next. The ease in which complex sonic interactions were achieved was as impressive mechanically as it was musically. Morris’ voice, while gentile and clean, rose on occasion to emphasise those passages that required exclamation. Her lacy set of cobbled components worked wonders winning over the room and setting the stage nicely for the headliners. Wherever the Dirty Projectors go you will find in their wake a mass of music media feverishly slashing at keyboards and searching the deepest Google directories trying to perfect some deconstruction of the Dirty Projectors sound. The fact is, like some abominable snowman or perhaps more fittingly the Predator, for a second you can see and understand where they are coming from, but then, just as quickly, it slips from your grip, pulling back into the eclectic ether.

Dirty Projectors (photo: Lisa Businovski)

Conducted by the manically finger-plucked drive of centrepiece Dave Longfellow, the band of virtuosos reproduced tracks like Ascending Melody, Two Doves, and Remade Horizon with a scratchy resonance with Longfellows interjectory guitar lines swaggering between his melodic muses in Amber Coffman, Haley Dekle, and Angel Deradoorian. While there’s a lot to like about this band, it’s the vocal arrangements that make the group so stunning to behold. These aural cacophonies draw as much from the jagged arrangements of Africana-pop as they do from any Western school and seeing the lady Projectors perform these complex vocal passages with aplomb is staggering. Witness a band as hot as Dir ty Projectors in a wonderfully inviting venue like the Rosemount is a rare treat, something the appreciative crowd seemed very much aware of as they cheered the New Yorkers off their final Australian stage. _GRANT MCCULLOCH

Sexy local swampabilly cats Rocket To Memphis are getting in their rockabilly rocket for a tour of Japan and the UK this April. DAVID CRADDOCK spoke to the band ahead of tour launch at Deville’s Pad on Friday, March 19.

Future Music

Ali Towers’ The Used Future EP is certainly not restrained or minimalist in its grand orchestral sounds and ambitious production. Produced at Sumo Sound in Perth with Laurie McCallum, the release features flute, violin, viola, cello and classical guitar, dancing over Towers’ polished and classic brand of acoustic pop. “He didn’t even flinch when the list of what I wanted got bigger and bigger,” Towers says of his guitarist and co-producer Josh Dyson, a WAAPA graduate who assisted with compiling the stellar cast of musicians who played on the recording. “Everything from the strings, to a Spanish guitar, flute and full band. So I was very lucky, and even luckier that most of the same players will be joining me for the launch. While the slick, polished production of the EP may lend itself to commercial radio, Towers has not shirked at writing raw, challenging and close-to-the-bone lyrics which often deal with ideas of mortality or mourning. “I’m not usually a morbid person but I guess we all have those kind of existential moments from time to time you know - like ‘what’s it all about?’ and the meaning of life,” he explains of tracks like This Fragile Track and Only The Fit Survive. “Wasn’t the answer 42 or

Breakin’ The Kyoto Hoodoo

Ali Towers something like that on Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? Not long before I was writing all of these songs a very good friend of mine, Andrew Graney, had just died at a young age. He was more like a brother really. We traveled through Europe for a year after school and recorded loads of songs on an old four track. He taught me so much about music, songwriting, and about legendary musicians and albums. He was a big influence on me so I was quite affected by his death. I guess a lot of that came out in the songs but I try not to get too specific with them usually.”

Voodoo-tinged swampabilly is a pretty underground and connoisseurial genre as it is, but when you take that hoodoo brew to Japan, you’ve reached a whack new level of obscure cool. Hip-grindin’ Western Australian act Rocket To Memphis will do exactly that they embark on an April tour through the land of the rising sun this April with their Raucous Record label mates The Tokyo Cramps. “It’s something we’ve wanted to do for ages but due to various things - such as the language barrier - it’s not the easiest thing to organise,” Rocket To Memphis guitar slinger Razor Jack explains of the tour which will be followed by a string of UK shows. “The worldwide release of our last album Hip Shakin’ Voodoo was the catalyst for the whole thing. For a start, it meant the CD is now readily available in Japan… We’re playing a bunch of shows in Osaka, Kyoto and Toyko, and apart from the Tokyo Cramps, we’ve got gigs with some other fantastic bands, including the garage-style Minnesota Voodoomen and Stompin’ Riff Raffs”. Alongside the burlesque revival, and the opening of suitably retro venues like Deville’s pad, a number of Western Australian bands with a markedly 1950s aesthetic have emerged over the past decade. Surf rockers Day Of The Dead, garage punk act The Jacknives (now Melbourne based) and Rocket

Rocket To Memphis

To Memphis themselves, have all helped lead a swampy, loud and raucous new charge. “From the early days of rock ‘n’ roll, these kinds of music have been associated with rebellion,” Jack explains of the garage, swamp and rockabilly scenes…. In many ways rockabilly and garage were the “punk rock” of their day and the best bands that perform in these styles now are the ones that still manage to capture that excitement. I’d like to think we’re one of them!”.

EXTRAS NEEDED

Boom! Bap! Pow!

Boom! Bap! Pow! require extras for the filming of their groundbreaking new film clip No Pleasin’ You on Saturday, March 27. The technology has never been used for an Australian clip before. Extras are asked to email to dance@cutandpastedvd.com by Wednesday, March 24, so that organisers can confirm numbers and provide further details. The band will also be launching their single Science at Amplifier on Saturday, March 20, with The Siren Tower, The Jackards and The Brown Horn Orchestra. Cave Fire Cinema are also putting the call out for extras for their Where The Sun Is clip, to be filmed at Dead Stars Night at The Castle on Friday, March 26. Aaagh Bats, Desertship and Smokin’ Aces will also be playing on the night. Zombies are encouraged to come along dressed as a dead celebrity. Doors 8pm, $4 for the undead.

THE SCREAMING JETS The Screaming Jets

Like a familiar old friend, Australian rock icons The Screaming Jets, return to WA for shows at Settlers Tavern on Thursday, March 18; The Civic on Friday, March 19; The Railway Hotel on Saturday, March 20; and the High Road Hotel in Riverton on Sunday, March 21. DAVID CRADDOCK got a band update from lead singer Dave Gleeson. They may have been hitting bars for donkeys years, but with their 2008 album Do Ya garnering new fans, and a recent national tour with Status Quo under their belts, Newcastle’s finest sons The Screaming Jets are far from standing still. If ever our nation could call a unique sound its own, Australian pub rock would have to be high on the list. AC/DC and Rose Tattoo may have been there at the genesis of this no-nonsense style, but it is bands like The Screaming Jets who continued to carry the flame right through the ‘80s and ‘90s. “Oz rock is always going to be in good shape as long as there are venues for young bands to play at,” Gleeson reflects on the genre. “Unfortunately, those venues are getting fewer and fewer, so it means bands have less of a training ground.” And as for Australia’s current poster boys of hard rock: “Wolfmother are not a band, they’re a dude” Gleeson offers. “And although Andrew Stockdale’s first gig he ever saw was The Screaming Jets, I can’t say it makes me very proud.” After twenty one years, plenty of line-up changes, and seven studio albums, many lesser bands would have thrown in the towel, called it a day and given up on night after night of sticky carpets. But Gleeson says the thrill of getting on stage keeps him and his four band mates inspired to keep the show rolling. “The love of the game keeps me playing,” he says. “It is just the best job on earth, without a doubt. Obviously there is a lot of crap

50

that goes on behind the scenes that I could do without, but those two hours a night on stage, make it all worthwhile.” The band’s most recent album Do Ya is the first without founding member Grant Walmsley. Still brimming with the hard rock energy The Screaming Jets are known for, Gleeson’s believes the 2008 release (the first for the band since 2000’s Scam) will still appeal to the Jets’ most die hard fans. “Every time we record an album, we have a quality control process where between the group we work out which songs we think are the best to go on the album,” he explains. “So hopefully each album is a progression in the level of song writing and the playing skills of the musos. We hope that our fans who have been with us all along love it just as much as people who have never heard of us before.” Never a musician to shy away from wearing his political ideas on his sleeve, Gleeson also appears to have lost none of his verve for sharing his current views on the state of the nation. “The biggest issues facing Australia today are the ever widening gap between the have and have nots,” he says. “And government and business’ failure to act to rectify this problem. Social welfare is the foundation of any society and to overlook that in the pursuit of the dollar is what led to the fall of the Roman Empire. Sadly the powers that be don’t seem to believe that history is relevant to them.”

Hittin’ the town since 1985

DAVID’S STORY When he started Uni in the 90s, the thought of using drugs horrified David. But when his partner of 11 years left him, he was plunged into a state of emotional turmoil. Deeply depressed and seeking an escape, he tried heroin with a friend. It turned him into a very different person. “It was never about the euphoria, it was the relief,” David recalls. Within months he knew his addiction had consumed him. Yet he couldn’t stop. “I tried to get information – about what treatments were like, how hard it is to get off, the kind of feelings I’d experience, how to come down. I got a different version from everyone I talked to. And most of it was probably wrong.” David has been in and out of programs ever since. But now he’s on something different. And it’s really helping. “I just felt so saturated before. I wanted to try something that wouldn’t soak my body.”

Everyone’s story is different. To know more about opiate dependency treatment options ask your healthcare provider for an Options Pack or visit
