It appears Powderfinger’s day has come. Only months after the Red Dragon (commonly known by her alias, Pauline Hanson) announced she was packing up her deep fryer and heading for the bright lights of London to star in a new adaptation Ms Saigon, directed by John Tyndall, Australia’s last titans of meat’n’spuds rock’n’roll have called it a day. Twelve years after penning their anti-Hanson anthem The Day You Come – the song that would transform the former Brissy cover band into Australia’s biggest rock group – and with One Nation dead and buried, Powderfinger’s work here is done. Speaking at a press conference in Sydney last week, frontman and professional cool dude Bernard Fanning said:“With the completion of our last album, Golden Rule, we feel that we have said all that we want to say as a musical group. We firmly believe that it is our most complete and satisfying album and can’t think of a better way to farewell our fans than with music that we all believe in.” Indeed, while Golden Rule was Powderfinger’s least successful album since 1996’s Double Allergic, Fanning and his band of brothers hit uncharted artistic heights, namely in the assonant virtuosity of lead single All The Dreamers, which decries: “When you come down to the barrio/You get a feel of the people’s scenario”.Take that T.S. Eliot. But don’t expect Powderfinger to go quietly. They have just announced a 21 date goodbye tour of Australia, entitled Sunsets: The Farewell Tour. The teary goodbyes roll into Perth on Friday, September 24, for a mega show at Supreme Court Gardens with Jet and The Vines. It seems these champions of the barrio may have their eye on the BRW Rich List one last time. However, we have word just in is that Bernard Fanning has been spotted lunching with that other monolith of Oz music, John Farnham. Our source tells us Farnham has been appointed an adviser to Powderfinger Inc, namely for his eminent expertise in the delicate matter of comeback tours. Our resident statistician has done the sums and – factoring in two solo albums from ol’ Bernie and some home renovations – has Powderfinger back out on the road by 2016 for the Sunrise: We’re Back Tour. You can place your bets now at your preferred online betting site. But until then, tickets for Powderfinger’s Sunsets: The Farewell Tour go on sale 9am on Friday, April 30, through ticketek.com.au or heatseeker.com.au. _JULIAN TOMPKIN

When Georges Bizet’s Carmen was premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1875 it was quickly denounced as a flop. Bizet would famously die a few months later thinking he’d written a dud, not knowing Carmen would soon become one of the most popular operas of all time. Set in Seville, Spain in the 1830s, Carmen tells the story of the opera’s eponymous frontwoman, the feisty gypsy who seduces young army corporal Don José. Carmen drags the lures José into a sordid life of crime before dumping him for a bullfighter. José is obviously a tad pissed about being dumped and seeks his revenge. The WA Opera’s production of the legendary Carmen plays at His Majesty’s Theatre until Saturday, April 24, and stars Perth’s own Catlin Hulcup as Carmen and, one of America’s rising young opera stars, the tenor Garrett Sorenson as Don José. “Tenors often have to play these wounded romantics who don’t always have the most interesting characters,” Sorenson tells X-Press, “but Don José is a real big douche bag! He’s a really interesting guy to play. He’s a mamma’s boy, he’s got anger issues… there are lots of interesting things about him. I am always very jealous of my baritone friends as they always get the best characters – bad ass guys. But Don José is great. “A taxi driver told me the other day he loved Carmen as there’s not a bad moment in it. I think that’s it with Carmen – there are no weak moments. People who are not trained up to love opera can appreciate it.” Tickets for Carmen are on-sale now through bocsticketing.com.au.

SO LONG, FAREWELL

LITTER BUGS

Dear X-Press,

Dear X-Press,

It’s with sadness that I have to announce it is Max’s last day as Chief Security Guard at the JB Hi Fi, Hay Street store this Friday 16th April. Max has made it a joy for my mate Kieran and I to visit this store almost every day during our lunch break. He has been an icon, almost more than the store itself! Max is now moving on to bigger and better things. I urge everyone who can possibly make it in tomorrow around 1pm, to do so and wish Max a fond adieu! He’ll be sorely missed! Max, it’s been a pleasure! Long live J Bels!!

I am so sick of seeing people throwing rubbish out of their cars and just dropping wrappers on the ground! Did Constable Care teach you litterbugs nothing?! We live in a society people, have some respect for your species your environment! It’s ridiculous that in 2010 people still have no regard for the land they live and work on. If we keep littering the next generation of Australians will be living in a tip!

I’m an Arts graduate, currently paying around $160 a week for a fairly okay house in North Perth. If my rent’s gonna be hiked up to $200 by the end of this year, that’s over half my weekly wage. No wonder Perth’s young people are migrating to Melbourne and Sydney and furthering their arts and cultural scene rather than our own – at least struggling artists get a roof over there! Hey, rich landlords. Spare a thought for your tenants. Every dollar counts to them, whereas it may not to you.

According to watoday.com.au, Perth tenants should get ready for rising rent prices, thanks to more newcomers to the state and improved economic conditions. According to wa.today, “The latest rental report by Australian Property Monitors shows asking rents in Perth have increased in the first three months of the year. EVE Taking The Rap

Female rapping sensation Eve joins Akon, Pitbull, Kelly Rowland, Jay Sean and Sean Paul and many more at Supafest on Sunday, April 18, at Members Equity Stadium. In the late ‘90s, when female rappers were regularly featured on charts and music video shows, Eve created a buzz for herself that was unprecedented. Utilising sassiness as a weapon, the rapper was signed to Ruff Ryders and released Let There Be Eve... Ruff Ryders First Lady, becoming only the second female hip hop star to enter the US billboards at number one. Her charm and rhyming skills had her marked as one of the industry’s rising stars, and she backed it up with her 2001 release Scorpion, which featured hip hop club anthems Who’s That Girl and the mainstream hit Let Me Blow Ya Mind with Gwen Stefani. The collaboration scored her a Grammy. Although, after the 2004 release of Eve-olution, Eve focused on other avenues only featuring as a guest rapper on songs like Gwen Stefani’s Rich Girl and Kelly Rowland’s Like This. By now her rise to fame had seen her turn her attention to other avenues like film, television and fashion, with the Philadelphia native releasing her own label, Fetish. Starring in her very own sitcom, aptly titled Eve, and featuring in movies like xXx, Barbershop, and Barbershop 2: Back in Business, the rapper was starting to forge a career outside the music industry. She did, however, return to create her follow up album, and the lead single Tambourine was one of the biggest urban anthems of 2007. But it was the constant delay of the album that lead the rapper to part ways with her label and look elsewhere to release her album Lip Lock (formerly titled Here I Am). With the album now scheduled for a 2010 release, a guest role on the most popular show of 2009 (Glee) and a place on one of the biggest urban line-ups to hit this country, it looks like things are starting to fall into place nicely for the one they call ‘E-V-E’.

By DEMELZA GOUDIE After many setbacks, Lip Lock is set to be released this year. Can you give us an insight into what we can expect from it? It’s an album that is... I’ve definitely gone back to having fun with making music. I’m not signed to Interscope anymore, I left them last year. So I’ll be signing to a new label in a few weeks. This is the album that has taken me back to just making fun with the music. I have Salaam Remi on the record; I’ll be collaborating with Akon; I just went into the studio with MSTRKRFT, Diplo. I’m going into the studio with Swizz Beats. It’s just a very upbeat, funky album. It’s just fun. It’s a fun-flirty album.

Finally I was like ‘let me go, you have to let me go because you are messing with my life’, so Interscope definitely took their time with this.

Could we potentially see some Eve songs in it down the line? That would be amazing, that would be incredible. One of my hopes is that they can actually bring me back on the show so I can do something or perform.

Number two, I was also upset… I didn’t want people to think that here I am promoting, promoting, promoting for this thing and then I don’t show up. You did end up coming for the MTV Awards... I did. I came for the MTV Awards and I got to make it to Adelaide. It was supposed to be Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth and after Adelaide they cancelled the shows. And I was really upset. What was your experience of Australia when you did come down here? Most amazing place ever. I tell people all the time, I had the best time. The people are amazing. It is a beautiful place. It was a place that is like ‘Damn! I can see (me) living here’. I love it.

STEREOFLOWER In Bloom WILL STOKER & THE EMBERS

Promising Perth folk rock band Stereflower launch their long awaited debut album at The Norfolk Basement on Saturday, April 17, with support from The Big Old Bears, 6s & 7s, and King Of The Castle magician Jon Madd. DAVID CRADDOCK got the low down On what is shaping up as a busy weekend of local launches, from songwriter and founding member Alex Elbery. If you’ve even fleetingly tuned into RTR FM eyed at each other as if to say ‘what the fuck was Will Stoker And The Embers release their debut album at The over the last month or so, chances are you’ve that? It’s Ok. Satellite Commander. Heartfelt, yet dirty and grinding with its thick bass and impassioned wailing, the track does well to evoke the intensity of a Stereoflower live show. Stereoflower was originally the name Elbery used when he first started playing solo in 2005, but the name soon grew to represent a full band when guitarist Richard Marmaduke, bass player Marko Remarko, and drummer Doctor Blythe began joining the songwriter on stage in 2007. As the band’s bio so colourfully describes, Elbery was looking “to escape the JD Salinger vibe of the solo circuit for the Dr Seuss possibilities of a band. “One day at band practice while everyone was just setting up I started to strum on the guitar and BAM! We played the entire song start to finish completely spontaneously, Elbery says of the significance The Cocaine Bebop for the band. “All of us just seemed to already know it somehow; I even made up all the words completely on the spot. It’s a stunning instrument, so graceful and warm; it feels almost holy.

Will Stoker & The Embers

Will Stoker isn’t hard to spot at The Beaufort Street Merchant. His Einstein-esque, flowing mane sets him apart from the laptop crunching suits and coiffured grandmothers on book club meetings. If tracks like The King are anything to go by, Stoker doesn’t mind putting himself out there as someone who is a bit different. Determined to write an intelligent rock record, Stoker and his band mates have produced an unpredictable, raucous and dynamic self titled debut – a highly anticipated release given their lengthy apprenticeship on the Perth live scene. “I like the way Radiohead work or some of PJ Harvey’s albums where one song, like Man-Size Sextet, is going to have strings and all that, Stoker explains. “And then the next song is going to be completely bare arse. The album certainly draws on a wide sonic palette. At times it evokes the pulpit preaching melodrama of Nick Cave (The King), the carnivalesque gypsy underworld inhabited by Tom Waits songs (The Waves Hiss & Burst), but can just as quickly shift into delicate classic piano-pop balladry (Dundee). “That song is all about the story of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Stoker says of The King.“In my travels in Europe last year I went to Munich and then I went to the Neuschwanstein Castle – which is the

The story of him is incredible, he died under mysterious circumstances, [and] he kept blowing his allowances on all these castles‌ He’s one of those mysterious people that you never quite figure out. They’re always people I’m inspired by and liken myself to I suppose.â€? Stoker’s live show and film clips have certainly erred on the side of oddity rather than the predictable. In the film clip for Five Beds For Bitsy he writhes around on the floor like a loon, and live on stage don’t be surprised to see him wielding a clarinet like a wild man. Sure, Stoker’s kooky schtick may be played up for the viewer, but in a world of calculated, cookie cutter indie bands, it makes for an exciting experience. “Once you figure someone out it becomes beige,â€? he offers. “When you’re being completely up front then people have figured you out and there’s nothing else to look into and be intrigued by.â€? If Bovine Republic, a cutting track that discusses suburbia is anything to go by, people being lulled into predictability is the last thing this songwriter wants. “I guess our isolation is kind of conducive to getting lulled into a coma and a comfortable pillow to lean on,â€? Stoker says. “You’ve got enough to eat, you’ve got Foxtel and you’ve got an air conditioned house on the arse end of the earth.â€?

JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE The Earle Of Old Time Justin Townes Earle’s history-laden name says it all. Named after Townes Van Zandt, and the son of legendary Texan Steve Earle, he has country music running through his veins. DAVID CRADDOCK spoke to the singer songwriter ahead of his shows at The Fly By Night on Thursday, April 22; and The Rosemount on Friday, April 23. “There’s very little good coming out of Nashville right now… what’s happening on music row is horseshit, for lack of a better term” drawls one time Nashville resident Justin Townes Earle from his new home in the East Village, New York City. If ever there was an artist fit to stand up against the hair-sprayed, over-rhinestoned, hyper-commercial country coming out of Music City, it is Earle. Sure, the 28 year-old songwriter has the appropriate genetics as the son of hard-edged country troubadour Steve Earle, but it is his enc yclopaedic knowledge of the history of country music, especially in Nashville, that makes him a perfect ambassador for a new wave of American roots musicians. “Being a student whereever you go I think helps with that a lot,” Earle says of

“I MEAN FUCKING KENNY CHESNEY SELLS WAY MORE RECORDS THAN PUFF DADDY AND BEYONCE! … IT ISN’T NASHVILLE’S FAULT [THAT] THEY’VE GOTTEN AWAY FROM COUNTRY MUSIC BUT THEY’RE JUST FOLLOWING POP MUSIC DOWN THE HOLE.”

Justin Townes Earle

his passion for classic American songwriters like Woody Guthie. “The heart of old music is based in the people and the surroundings that have grown around this certain kind of music. And I think it’s about keeping your eyes open and always staying you know, curious. Never arriving - I think that’s the best thing that can happen for a song writer or artist.” E a r l e’s t h i r d, a n d m o s t r e c e n t album, Midnight At The Movies, is no twee, nostalgia trip or banjo-laden cliché. The sad, melancholic wail of Hank Williams may echo across many tracks, but lyrics about modern American life, and reflections on Earle’s troubled drug-addled upbringing on the outskirts of Nashville, give the recording a stark contemporar y relevance for an America that, dream or no dream, still has strong divisions across class, educational and political lines. “I think what people have to realise is that it’s really, really rare when you reinvent the wheel,” the artist says of the challenges facing songwriters who evoke sounds of the past. “Even Bob Dylan, I don’t think he invented anything. He worked inside extremely traditional forms for his entire career. And I think that’s the reason he finds his way into so many people’s lives because it’s deeper and it’s more recognisable. It has a whole lot of history behind it and he shows it very blatantly.” Last year at the Americana Music Awards, Earle’s talent for deeply rooted, yet ‘real’ songwriting was recognised when he was awarded a gong for Best Emerging Artist. Commercially, however, given the current tastes of the American country music industry, it is unlikely that he will ever achieve the widespread exposure of his long-gone heroes. “One thing people always have to take into consideration is the fact that Nashville, since the time of Uncle Dave Macon, who was the very first star of the G r a n d O l e O p r y, h a s a l w ay s b e e n t h e forefront of popular music and the world,” Earle methodically explains. “I mean fucking Kenny Chesney sells way more records than Puff Daddy and Beyonce! So I think that’s the deal - it isn’t Nashville’s fault [that] they’ve gotten away from country music but, they’re just following pop music down the hole. Because pop music fuckin’ sucks these days. We’re a long time away, not in terms of time, but in terms of where we stand now, from bands like The Cars and The Faces being at the front of pop music… I don’t think Nashville’s going to find its way out of this hole. I think Nashville’s kind of fucked forever.” While the impassioned theories on the decline of Nashville may make Earle sound like a rose-goggled musical romanticist or outright Luddite, he is not. The songwriter has an iPhone full of songs for long plane journeys, and as a kid listened to plenty of hip-hop, but says he is always drawn back to the roots of American music. “I listened to hip-hop and gangster rap as a kid and I still do when it’s good,” Earle says. “When it’s musical – stuff like Outkast, The Roots and Mos Def is definitely stuff worth listening to. It’s not that I don’t find feeling in it, but it just wasn’t for me. It wasn’t my feeling. And plus lets just face it, its very rare with the exceptions of artist like Eminem, who I think is also a brilliant lyricist, when white boys don’t look goofy as shit.” If Earle’s nomination as one of GQ’s 25 Most Stylish Men In The World is anything to go by, he’s regarded in fashion circles as anything but goofy. Always impeccably dressed in country style suits, slick haircuts, and swanky shirts, he says that what he wears is an important part of his act. “Growing up in Nashville you’d see people like Porter Wagoner going to the gas station,” he explains. “He didn’t wear rhinestone suits everywhere he went, but when you saw Porter Wagoner out in public he was dressed nice. You’d see Ray Price out in public, he was dressed nice. He’s wearing slacks and his shirt tucked in and really fine ostrich cowboy boots. And I think that that’s important. We owe it to the people to make everything look nice and be as pleasing as possible, whether that’s pleasing to the ear or the eye.”

AMELIA’S STORY Amelia comes from a family where substance abuse was “pretty rife” growing up. “We had opium poppies growing in our back yard,” she recalls. “The first time I had heroin, I smoked it with a couple of hippies who grew it themselves.” A recreational user until her mid-twenties, things changed for Amelia when a long-term relationship crumbled around her and she started using more frequently. But when she tried to stop, she couldn’t. “It was ridiculous, I was such a mess,” she says. “One day I woke up and thought I don’t want to be a slave to heroin any more. I want to survive.” “I already knew a fair bit (about treatment programs). I did some research, had a good read on the internet. I had a beautiful doctor too.” But while Amelia says her experience was “fantastic” she’s seen enough to know everyone’s treatment journey can be very different. “No one’s ever the same. You have to work out what’s best for you - your body and your situation.”

THE LEISURE SOCIETY Eleven Winks One of the more unique outfits to make a splash on the UK scene of late is The Leisure Society. Their debut album The Sleeper – now available in Australia – is littered with strings, brass and woodwind throughout its ballads of whimsical folk-pop. CHRIS HAVERCROFT spoke to main man Nick Hemming about awards and wallpaper. When Hemming moved to London from his hometown in the Midlands, which he declares as being ‘famous for nothing’, he could only have dreamed of the success that would eventually reach him. He found employment in a wallpaper factory and became involved with Brighton’s Willkommen collective as a way to connect with musicians who would play his songs. With a set of musicians at his disposal, Hemming set about recording the debut album for The Leisure Society. Having self-funded the recordings, it wasn’t too long before record labels came knocking at his door. It was a unique approach, but gave Hemming total control his product. “I wouldn’t do it the traditional way again, as there is so much more freedom when you are doing it all yourself,” Hemming begins, of taking the path less travelled. “There is no one poking their nose in and you get to record whenever and whatever you want. It is a much nicer way to work as you are in your own cocoon and you are not watching the clock.” Watching the clock is something that Hemming was well versed in before the success of The Leisure Society, having worked in a wallpaper factory. His day was spent lifting large rolls of fabric, weighing them, packaging them and sending them out for dispatch. On the positive side, it did give him plenty of headspace to write more songs. “It seems like a lifetime ago, but I only left the factory last May,” Hemming muses. “Basically it wasn’t too bad a job other than it was in a large cold warehouse, so it was a bit of a nightmare in winter. I used to cycle five miles there and back everyday so I was a lot more fit. I didn’t have to use my brain too much so it left my head free to be able to think about writing songs. Who knows; if the ideas dry up I may go back and work there again.” Although life in the factory was bearable, Hemming admits to feeling pretty melancholy during the making of The Sleeper. He had moved to London after splitting up with his partner and figured he had nothing to lose. The routine of day jobs and having few friends in London made him question if he was going to achieve the success he had wished for, and the album captures those deep, emotive feelings of longing. Ironically, the song that was written when he was at his lowest ebb lifted him out of the mire. Hemming found himself in the unprecedented position of being the first unpublished songwriter to be nominated for the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for his song The Last Of The Melting Snow. Musically it is his greatest accolade to date and, although the nomination did not lead to The Leisure Society being awarded any prize money, the nomination did change Hemming’s life. “As I was the first ever unpublished songwriter to be nominated it became a bit of a news story over here,” he concludes. “I’d be working in the warehouse and I’d have BBC news cameras coming in to film me working. It was bizarre and surreal, but a bit embarrassing as well. Because it became a mainstream news story over here – that is how my publisher heard about me, and that is how I can afford to not work now and to just write songs all day. I am just waiting for Hollywood to come and ask me for the film rights.”

SLASH Self Titled

MGMT Congratulations

Dik Hayd Records/Sony

Sony/Columbia

In this all-star collaborative of Slash’s favourite vocalists we are greeted with a range of rock tropes from classic to modern. The line-up of guest artists is a little underwhelming with the likes of Fergie, Adam Levine (Maroon 5), and Kid Rock, but old-school veterans Ozzy Osborne, Iggy Pop and Lemmy Kilmeister make up for it. Album opener Ghost begins with a classic Appetite For Destruction inspired riff leaving you without a doubt as to who’s carrying the axe. As you would expect Slash’s trademark solos are a running theme through the album, all the while letting the vocalists take ownership of the track. Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother) does his usual grandiose stoner rock thing in By The Sword and Iggy Pop remains a feral bastard in We’re All Gonna Die. While there are some standout moments on Slash like the surprising I Hold On featuring Kid Rock (of all people), most of it feels bland. Simplistic power-chords rule many of the tracks as do the cliché, formulaic lyrics. It may be an intentional way of matching vocalists with their native style, but surely there’s room for experimentation on an album like this? And no, Slash does not sing. _BRENDAN HOLBEN

Hotly anticipated and leaked online a good month early to m i xe d re ce p t i o n , Congratulations is here, officially and in the stores. Oracular Spectacular was an album of number ones, a modern classic that threw MGMT into the mainstream and gave anthems for a new generation. How does a young band follow up an album of hits? Well, not trying to, is one option. Unlike Oracular this album is bare of hits, or even hooks. Though like the album before it, the boys conjure up grand sound-scapes, with reverb laden guitars, haunting organs and a seemingly endless stream of instruments. The production is just a bit too stale and straight up with none of the other-worldly sounds Oracular used to such great success. This is largely due to not having sound magician David Fridmann on board again, the drums especially suffering. Ok, so that’s what I don’t like, what do I like? I Found A Whistle is a cracking tune and Lady Dada’s Nightmare is a soaring instrumental that signals the peak of the album. But by leaving out all the pop MGMT risk losing their core audience. As Oracular talked of having to pretend to have money and fame, Congratulations stands as a counter-point - we got all that for real, but it turns out we don’t want it. _TOM VARIAN

GYROSCOPE Cohesion

HIM Screamworks: Love And Theory In Practice

Island/Universal

Sire Records/Reprise Records

There are very few bands in Australia who ply their trade with the conviction of Gyroscope. This Perth foursome has made a career out of honest rock’n’roll of the punk persuasion, employing a working class ethic that has steered them from Perth’s underground to the forefront of Australian music. If the band’s Gold-selling album of 2008, Breed Obsession, was their palatable crossover moment the band’s fourth long-player, Cohesion, reaffirms Gyroscope as our kings of ferocious rock. Speaking to X-Press, frontman Dan Sanders said that with Cohesion, “we have come full circle”. And he’s not wrong! The brutal assault of I Still Taste Blood and Working With Wood hark back to the primal passion of the band’s debut EPs, Scalectrix and Take Time. However, this is not a band retreating to old tricks. On the contrary, with songs such as Some Of The Places I Know Gyroscope completely rewrite their doctrine, diverting listeners through some of the most intelligent rock this country has seen in years. Unlike the endless succession of onesong-wonders hitting the charts, Gyroscope are an example of what can be achieved when you treat music with the reverence it deserves and back it up with sheer hard work. Gyroscope truly deserves every success that comes the band’s way.

With HIM returning from the brink of oblivion, it would be reasonable to hope for material that would reflect a renewed sense of passion from these self-proclaimed Finish ‘love’ rockers. Instead, we are left with their most Americanised work yet in their seventh release. Remember the rumours circa-2005, when HIM allegedly dropped producer Andy Wallace as the quintet felt he took them too far into ‘American’ territory? They have really dropped the ball here, treading a fine line between evoking compassion or hysterics. Completely sacrificing any sense of individuality that once drew frontman Ville Valo’s minions to HIM, they have stepped away from that darker edge that personified 2007’s Venus Doom and have trudged head-on into pop punk territory. Incorporating more kitsch ‘80s synth than ever before, the album awkwardly meshes Valo’s roaming vocal style – stronger than ever due to sobriety – with catchy, predictable riffs a la Mikko Lindstrom and Mikko Paanenan. The question that needs to be posed: is this satire? _JESSICA WILLOUGHBY

SALLY SELTMANN Heart That’s Pounding

MHORGL Antinomian

Remote Control/Shock

Independent

It may be because she has recently become a mother for the first time, or the confidence gained from penning a hit single for Feist, but Sally Seltmann has now dropped the New Buffalo moniker in favour of recording her third album under her own name. There was always a sense of nostalgia in the sound of New Buffalo, but Seltmann has opted for a more classic radio sound this time around. Harmony To My Heartbeat is ambiguously written so as that the song, about motherhood, can also be seen on face value as a timeless love song. It is a lovely turn of phrase for the bright songwriter. Seltmann has obviously become more comfortable with her breathy voice and has pushed it to the forefront during these recordings. I Tossed A Coin is breathy and fragile, Dream About Changing has sixties girl group appeal and Dark Blue Angel enlist Jens Lekman and Ned Collette as part of its choir. Heart That’s Pounding is Seltmann’s coming of age. This one should see her plastered all over the airwaves and picking up awards by the bucket load. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

Let us, for argument sake, just call Antinomian the debut album from local black metal maestros Mhorgl. As this is technically the first release since this quartet of highly traditional fellows made the leap from studio outfit to the live setting, and the fine skills of award-winning drummer Louis Rando (Nervecell, ex-The Furor) are now in tow. Born out of a mutual respect for the more violent hues of metal, their brand of chaotic – yet organised – songwriting has taken a turn into even less predictable territory with this album. Stripping back the instrumental skin to reveal the raw flesh of Mhorgl’s distinctive sound, each track works as an all-out assault of ripping slabs via guitarist Robert Thorpe, Rando’s tribalistic pounding, and bassist James Campbell’s driving beat. Piercing through this thick and unrelenting fog, vocalist Sam Moretta guides the way, from the simpler rhythms of Nocturnal Blasphemy to the crusty and obviously Darkthrone-influenced Necrohatred. Featuring a re-recording of The Paean Of Hangatyr from their 2007 release The Sacrificial Flame, there is also a cover of Ozzy Osbourne classic Mr Crowley. Perverse and poetic, all at once. _JESSICA WILLOUGHBY

JONSI Go

BLUD

Parlophone/EMI

Myspace.com/bludmagic

With plans for a new Sigur Rós album having been shelved, front man Jón (Jónsi) Þór Birgisson has made the most of the hiatus by teaming up with his partner Alex for the Riceboy Sleeps project and now his debut solo album Go. Although having dabbled in the language only briefly on previous works, Jónsi sings the majority of the songs on Go in English. When hearing lyrics about brushing hair, riding bikes and making out on Animal Arithmetic it does break the spell to some extent of someone who has spent years using his voice as an instrument that was never restrained by simple words and language. No matter the content, it can’t change the fact that when Jónsi sings, the sounds are nothing short of heavenly - and enlisting Nico Muhly (Antony & The Johnsons) to handle strings adds to the divinity. There is a lot to like about the nine songs of Go, thanks to dense instrumentation, tight samples and finely crafted melodies. With Go Jónsi is much more than the Enya for indie kids. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

Every now and then triple j music director Richard Kingsmill will drop a ‘check this band out’ on his Twitter. Given that he’s got upwards of 4000 followers, and programs the country’s most influential youth radio network, receiving a Kingsmill shout out has a bit of a Willy Wonka ‘Golden Ticket’, quality to it. It’s a handy boost. So imagine our surprise when last week, the king directed his followers (A bit feudal isn’t it?) to check out BLUD, a young Perth electro/indie band with only two songs on their rather mysterious Myspace. But what a song Sarah Is For Lovers is. Sure, the MGMT comparisons will come thick and fast but there’s a dramatic, apocalyptic vibe to it not unlike a These New Puritans track. There’s even a slightly dancehall, dirty reggae thing going on. Daft Punk fans should also take note. It’s an impressively slick and ‘big’ anthem that’d absolutely slay a younger audience. Perhaps Tim And Jean should watch their back?

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS TENDER PREY

WILL STOKER & THE EMBERS Self Titled

myspace.com/ nickcaveandthebadseeds

Independent/Shock

Will Stoker & The Embers’ debut album hasn’t been giddily rushed out too early in the band’s career – and it shows. After a solid apprenticeship in the local scene, this album is carefully considered and focussed, with each song benefiting from plenty of on stage development. In terms of radio play, The King is a clear stand out with its dramatic changes of pace and its unexpectedly rousing chorus. In the verses Stoker spits bile and rapid-fire adjectives in a pulpit preachy style undoubtedly inspired by Monsieur Cave; but just as you’re ready for a similarly theatrical regrain there’s a swerve ball chorus so catchy and anthemic it could’ve been on What’s The Story Morning Glory. Odd – but it works. That sense of unpredictability is really the strength of the album, as it is in Stoker’s live show. There’s the slightly grubby beat pop of Bovine City, thumping four-to the-floor blues rock of Bower Bird and the earnest, acoustic shimmer of Penelope. The bombastic, Led Zep vibe of Tickets Please is a slightly deceiving opener given the more off-beat moments on the release - but listeners who give this album a full listen will find that behind the shifts in style and pace this is very much an old fashioned, cohesive long player. Tracks 1-6 would make a great A-Side in anyone’s book.

With the rest of his countrymen celebrating Australia’s bicentenary, in 1988 the country’s foremost defector was bunkered down in West Berlin about to pen the record that would define a new era for Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds: Tender Prey. Berlin was a dark place in 1988; still bitterly divided and a Mecca for degenerates ravenous for experimental rock and hard drugs. And it was from here that Cave – at his most self-destructive – scribbled down the lyrics to what would begin his magnum opus:“I am nearly wholly innocentâ€?. The Mercy Seat has since been the subject of countless studies; a song which comes around once in a generation‌ if you’re lucky. Tender Prey remains a patchy record, but one that defined a new vision that welded the harrowing with the serine – a formula that would eventually bring Cave great success. Tender Prey has just been reissued by EMI in deluxe format, along with 1990’s The Good Son and 1992’s Henry’s Dream.

WE HAVE BAND WHB Pod/Inertia

Co m i n g u p w i t h a n interesting band name can be pretty difficult business. Even taking that into consideration, there aren’t enough excuses left in the world that could possibly justify why anyone would even remotely think that taking We Have Band as a moniker would be anywhere near passable. The London trio make beat heavy tracks with fuzzed out bass and forgettable vocals. The slower moments are decidedly aimless and the more dance floor oriented efforts end up sounding like a tepid Human League If the debut WHB is anything to go by, it’s not worth wasting your time with We Have Band until they are able to declare ‘we have songs’... and that appears to be sometime away. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

Put together on a shoestring budget and a prayer by music video director Russell Mulcahy and animatronic modeler Bob McCarron, Razorback is a gloriously dark creature romp that somehow works. Legendary Aussie cinematographer Dean Semler’s brooding and claustrophobic outback photography is a start, but little else went according to plan. The animatronic pig broke down constantly, leaving Mulcahy and his crew with little choice but to have the second model (of the head only) burst through windows and walls. Interviewed a few years ago, Mulcahy said if they did it again today they’d have a CGI long shot of the pig running through the pet food cannery of the film’s climax. And honestly, that’s a little sad. The rough and ready in-camera effects that characterise films like Razorback and its bigger, more successful cousins Jaws and An American Werewolf In London are all part of the charm. So it’s interesting to see how the directors of Korean horror film Chaw approach their own giant maneating pig movie. CGI’s easier, but no matter how ropey models can be, it removes some of the urgent realism that gives classic horror films their longevity. _DREW TURNEY

Instead of disappearing into obscurity, The Room was brought back to life some years after its release by a group of curious hipsters who hosted midnight screenings to mock this farce of a film. A few years on and hipsters are still gathering to witness The Room in all its terrible glory, as is Wiseau himself, having since dubbed the film a black comedy. Thanks to Six Thousand and Luna Palace, Perth cinemagoers will soon get to witness The Room for themselves, with a screening at Luna Leederville at 11pm on Saturday, April 10. LOOKING PRETTY AT THE POLO

Polo may well be one of the world’s oldest sports but few West Australians have had the chance to experience a thrilling Polo match live. All of that is about to change because Polo In The Valley is headed to WA, promising to bring the excitement and elegance of a traditional Polo match to Perth this Sunday, April 18, at Duncraig Stud in the Swan Valley. Not sure what to wear to the Polo? Here are a few sartorial tips from stylist Eddie Dos Santos.“Girls be daring and playful. Steer clear of clichéd racecourse attire and instead grab your bestie and spend an afternoon rummaging through a vintage store or two. Mix it up with high street labels and layer a look that is completely yours, not a carbon copy of someone else. “Boys this is your chance to make like a dapper gent and get your cool on! Your shopping list starts now... Buy one white linen pant with rolled cuffs or a faun, tailored short. Try adding cravats, ties, belts, and loafers in mixed tones and shades and, like the girls, don’t be afraid to clash prints and colours.” Tickets are on sale now from polointhevalley.com.au

Hailing from the UK, now based in Los Angeles, Gina Yashere is an infectiously funny comedian whose cheeky observations about life have seen her win over audiences worldwide. When X-Press catches up with Yashere she’s busy celebrating a recent career highlight – having just scored a one hour Showtime special on American television.“The party was great, I actually had two parties; one at a bar in West Hollywood with over 100 of my friends, and some TV executives came out, which cost me a fortune in champagne.” Champagne costs aside, Yashere is in high spirits, ready to take over the world one stand up show at a time. Yashere’s next destination is little ol’ Perth where she’ll perform a series of shows sure to tickle funnybones. Catch her on stage at the Charles Hotel’s Comedy Lounge tonight, Thursday, April 15; at Crackerjacks in North Fremantle on Friday, April 16; and at the Woodvale Tavern on Saturday, April 17. ASLAN Lionhearted

Irish rock’n’roll legends Aslan will appear at R o s i e O ’ G ra d y ’s, N o r t h b r i d g e, o n Wednesday, April 21, (acoustic/meet-andgreet Q&A session, not full live show) and subsequently perform at the venue on Thursday-Friday, April 22-23.

McGuinness acknowledges that although clearly hypothetical, the notion that Aslan’s five-year break did the band some good and led ultimately to their longevity has indeed proven to be the case. “Yes, first and foremost we were friends before we were a band,” he concurs. It’s been a long time since they rock’n’rolled. “To save that friendship we broke up and when we got back we realised how In Australia, at least. BENEATH HILL 60 Mine Over Matter

BRENDAN COWELL Behind Beneath Hill 60

Beneath Hill 60

Directed by Jeremy Sims Starring Brendan Cowell, Harrison Gilbertson, Steve Le Marquand, Gyton Grantley, Alex Thompson We’ll never run out of stories to tell about wars. Not just because humanity has a bad habit of constantly waging fresh wars on each other, but because the deeds, heroism, suffering and even humour they characterise would fill more pages and more feet of celluloid than we can ever print. Whether it’s the emotional aftermath on the men who raised the American flag in Joe Rosenthal’s immortal photo (Flags of Our Fathers), the resistance mounted by the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto (Uprising), the final days of the Third Reich (Downfall) or even the comic pandemonium as panic about an anticipated Japanese attack sweeps California (1941), we simply never run out of stories borne of war. Part of the reason is because new aspects of such culturally rich occurrences like wars keep coming to light. Most of the contents of mining engineer Oliver Woodward’s book are fairly dry descriptions of bracing up tunnels and the calculations for pumping out water. The emotional weight of Woodward’s task only shines through every now and then. He and his men weren’t building mining tunnels in his native Queensland. After joining up in 1915, he was sent to the European front in Belgium and told to tunnel underneath the no man’s land in front of the German lines and plant explosives underneath them. Directing from a script by David Roach, TV actor and one-time film director (Last Train To Freo) Jeremy Sims has bought the story of Woodward and his colleagues to the screen in blistering detail. With rain pouring, shells going off around them and muddy faces going between officer dugouts, sleeping holes and tunnels 30

www.xpressmag.com.au

metres down, Sims has squeezed every cent out of his $9.6million budget and crafted a war movie that easily stands up against far bigger budgeted contemporaries from the genre. In the 1960s and ’70s, war films were like grown up versions of The Goonies. Movies like Where Eagles Dare and The Guns of Navarone were about boys playing with toys in high stakes games to vanquish evil, moustachetwirling bad guys. In our more politically correct times they’ve been about suffering and horror, with little of the adventurism of the earlier era. Sims’ film tends more towards the latter – you feel every premature death and horrible injury, you watch men trying to sleep in muddy pits and you share the anguish of loved ones back home waiting for the fateful telegram to arrive. But Beneath Hill 60 has strong elements of the action-packed military thrills of earlier war films as well – it will keep you on the edge of your seat as well as pinch your heartstrings. D e s p i te t h e s l i c k n e s s re l a t i ve inexperience occasionally peeks through. While he does a great job of carrying almost ever y scene on his shoulders, Brendan Cowell sometimes feels less than completely comfortable as the miner/soldier. Other cast members such as Steve Le Marquand do better, but that’s because they’re mostly fodder to Woodward as the lynchpin of the plot. As a director, Sims shows no such uncertainty. Despite only one small movie (set completely in train carriage) to his name he makes it look like he’s been doing this in Hollywood for years. He’s just as strong zeroing in on muddy, panic-stricken faces as he is with sweeping shots of a pock-marked battlefield with fire and dirt flying.

We hear it every time there’s a bushfire, flood, drought or any of the other threats that face us in this wide brown land, but as actor Brendan Cowell puts it; “Australians are pretty amazing people when they’re under pressure.” The 33 year old actor’s talking about the character he portrays in Beaneath Hill 60 as Captain Oliver Woodward. Woodward is the lynchpin of Beneath Hill 60, the true story of a corps of civilian engineers sent to the deadlocked European front in World War 1. Their job was to tunnel underneath enemy lines to plant explosives, and Cowell plays the Queensland miner given the task. The men who carried out the 1916 mission faced shortages of time and provisions as well as water pouring into the tunnels from the never-ending rain that lashed the Belgium battlefeilds. They talked tactics in dugouts with dirt raining from the ceiling after every mortar impact outside, tried to write to loved ones thousands of kilometers (and months by ship) away and slept in muddy holes. Cowell thinks the same spirit to muck in and get the job done that’s such a strong part of our national heritage helped get the film made too. “It was really difficult because if we were indoors we were crouched down in tunnels about four foot high. If we were outside, we basically had mud and rain pelting down on us the whole time. So there wasn’t really anywhere to escape, it was all pretty oppressive. But the crew was in, the director was in, the ADs, makeup artists, everyone was in, everyone was muddy and that’s what film making is all about.” Of course, Cowell and his workmates _DREW TURNEY

had a few luxuries. Even though he calls the shoot ‘brutal’, he’s quick to point out the Germans over the hill weren’t shooting at them for real, and they had a trailer with a French chef and a hotel near the beach not far from the Townsville-based shoot. But did shooting such a somber subject add to their misery? “I think their sense of humour and their ingenuity is what kept them alive,” Cowell says. “So I guess that’s what we were doing as well, just keeping each other buoyed and above the water and sane. Any moment you have that’s free of tragedy, pain and death, you’ll take it. We were kind of doing the same thing.” Beneath Hill 60 is directed by director and actor Jeremy Sims, a name known from many TV shows ranging from Stingers and Farscape to Home and Away. He directed 2006’s tense character piece Last Train To Freo, but this is his first time on an expansive set with pyrotechnics, action and the other trappings of a war film. Even Cowell says he was amazed he was the lead in a movie – as a film made by erstwhile beginners, how did the shoot hold up? “I know this is an old adage but it’s bloody true,” Cowell says, “actors that become directors care about performances. And even though he probably had ten thousand dollars worth of explosions going off in the background his priority was always looking at us and going ‘you happy? Let’s work harder; I want to hear the words’. He was always prioritising the performances in an epic movie and that’s pretty nice for us.” _DREW TURNEY

The Duck House has long traded in stories and constructs exploring conceptions of women not commonly examined in the traditional dialectic of femininity in theatre. The multifarious and eclectic work of the group resists genre definition, although shows are invariably quirky, funny, yet thought provoking and beautiful at the same time. Their latest opus, Acts of Undressing, promises to be no different. Kat Osborne, director of the piece, describes the work as being about an exploration of the things we have to do to feel content in our lives. “Basically, it’s about these three crazy women in the fashion industry, and they travel the world and hunt different birds to get different feathers for their hats. One day they end up on a beach looking for seagulls and meet an isolated lighthouse keeper. One of them falls in love with him and stays. The story is about her transitioning from being a fashionable woman to a domesticated woman, and how their relationship plays out. It’s about two lonely people coming together.” Like always, the narrative belies a deeper exploration of aspects of the human condition. “We’re playing with the superficial element to making yourself look good, and if nothing is behind that all there is just another lonely person trying to find their way through the world. The context of the whole show is based on that very symbolism. And yet the character leaves her lonely

life, and she still can’t find happiness, so perhaps in the end, you find it in yourself, and not other things.” Amongst other things, The Duck House is well known for its devised and (initially) unscripted work. Acts of Undressing stands in stark contrast to this, featuring a script written by Ian Sinclair that is the result of a year of work with The Duck House crew. Osborne explains, “I worked with Ian over a year for it. We asked him to write us a show because we want to see what happened if we had a script, and it’s been very different. We took a more methodical approach this time. It’s been tricky at times because I sometimes feel like I haven’t done enough work. I’m so used to having to think about story as I go, but with this we didn’t have to worry about that. Although The Duck House produces work that deals with feminine issues, they shirk the label of being a ‘feminist’ theatre company, or indeed one that has any overarching focus to ideas of feminity at all. Even the engagement with feminine issues takes place over ground not often trod. “We don’t try and make our shows about women things, but it ends up that way because we are women being creative together. The transformative body is something that is very important to us, as is the animalistic quality about women. The one thing we really like to address about femininity is the uglier side and the awkwardness, and the idea of a fall from grace. We like to explore the quirkiness to women, rather than the elegance. That’s way more interesting than a heroine thing.” _JOE LUI Hittin’ the town since 1985

Initially a term thrown around by the late night crew as an expression of well wishes, ‘Fire It Up’ has developed quickly into a global phenomenon, becoming one of the most recognisable brands in the business. GLEN CANNING caught up with Eddie Halliwell, the enigmatic driving force behind it all as he prepares to launch into his Fire It Up solo tour of Australia. At only 22 years of age, Eddie Halliwell held residencies at two of the UK’s premier clubs, Goodgreef and Gatecrasher. The following year he won the coveted Mixmag’s DJ Of The Year title; a global tour followed, his explosive live sets earning him a cult-like following wherever he played. With his dynamic stage presence, slick mixing skills and sheer power behind the decks, Halliwell has established himself as a true entertainer, playing everything from trance, house, electro and techno. Regardless of where he plays, the chant of ‘Eddie! Eddie! Eddie!’ erupts long before he steps into the DJ box. Despite his growing legion of fans, in a recent chat Halliwell reveals to Salt that he is still surprised by his popularity. “Well yeah, it certainly has [surprised me]! It’s just good, I really appreciate all the support, it’s great to have that you know and to enjoy what you do and get that kind of response from people is a great thing. It’s amazing to do what you actually enjoy!” After playing in front of a remarkable 1.5 million people in Rio for New Year’s Eve, Halliwell toured Australia with Summadayze – barely three months later, he is returning to our shores.

THE THINKING MAN’S BAND Think What You Will arose from the ashes of the band Bleed Thru (which featured band members E.N Church and Lloyd Hosier), who along with Dan Greco, create an infused style of noir techno-electro with their act. Over time they’ve moved away from the electronic music template and became more visceral with the inclusion of overdriven guitars and grungy bass lines. The band push new audio boundaries by blending dirtier analogue synthetic sounds with harder edged guitar and bass riffs. Catch this new electronic group in action at Audio Addiction on Saturday, April 17, at the Velvet Lounge, supported by Ylem and Audio Cephlon. Doors open 8pm, free entry.

His sets are never less than perfect - blending blistering beats and ripping bass with a panache that is the envy of the dance world. Hyper’s recent output has seen him forming a kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll band under the Hyper moniker, featuring erstwhile Prodigy member Leeroy, exPitchshifter axespanker Jim Davies and PFN’s main-man Ronnie. Hyper will be blowing the crowd’s minds at Ambar on Friday, May 7. Tickets $20 on the door or presales from boomtick.com.au. Doors open 10pm.

Claude VonStroke’s famous dirtybird label has always been synonymous with sweaty bass-lines, quirky ideas, and bumpin’ funk. This year is the label’s fifth anniversary, and to celebrate one of America’s quirkiest imprints, the dirtybird boys are throwing a series of massive house parties across the country. Two of the label’s biggest names, Justin Martin and Worthy, come to Perth. Martin is now in such demand that his diary is crammed with dream gigs, from Exit Festival to Panorama Bar in Berlin. His touring partner and long time initial member of the dirtybird crew, Worthy, has taken the world by storm. Taking inspiration from everything from hip hop, to breaks to techno, Worthy has consistently delivered quality tune after quality tune, while gaining praises for his slightly edgy style. The dirtybird flies into Shape, East Perth on Saturday, May 8. Tickets on sale Thursday, April 15, for $15 from shapebar.com. au.

THINK ZINC Straight out of London’s East End, DJ Zinc’s illustrious career has seen him included in the permanent exhibition the ‘British Music Experience’, alongside the Beatles and Sex Pistols. A former drum ‘n’ bass head, DJ Zinc spent 2008 in a cocoon of creativity and emerged playing a hybrid of house sounds – deep to funky to fidget. As the main man at his own label, Bingo Beats, DJ Zinc describes his music as ‘Crack House’ – a self-described genre he believes in so much, he’s named his latest album after it. His banging single off that album is Wile Out (featuring Miss Dynamite). Catch Zinc on Friday, May 14 at Ambar. Doors open 10pm for $25 (limited presales available from boomtick.com. au for $20). “I’ve actually just been doing the festivals for the past three occasions I think and I’ve just been looking to do a club tour for quite a while and get back into them. I think what happened when I played in Perth last time at the Summadayze festival, the sound and everything went so yeah, I was looking to get back to do a club gig and when that happened in Perth I really pushed to organise the club tour whilst I was actually out there.” Halliwell has ranked in the top 20 of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ List for the past four years - a remarkable feat, considering he is yet to produce any of his own music. But as he explains, the future is looking bright. “With the way DJs evolve with technology, production and DJing are coming close together. You can be so creative as a DJ; you can ultimately create and produce your own stuff on stage. I can see myself getting more and more into the production side of things whilst still being able to maintain a lifestyle on the road, without being stuck in the studio, which is what you had to do a few years ago. I do actually believe the future of the DJ is becoming so creative. So much equipment is available, you’re ultimately using programs that will allow you to create your own sounds on stage. So definitely, that excites me!” Halliwell’s 2003 compilation Next Level Bosh introduced the world to his now famous catch phrase, ‘Fire It Up’. Seven years on and it has become a hugely successful brand that continues to gain momentum. Halliwell explains the origin of the phrase. “ ‘Fire it up’ is something that just started from a phrase I used to say where I sort of describe things, like ‘going out to fire it up’. So it was a phrase and started from that and obviously now works as a brand and the term is also a good description for you to come out and enjoy your night, so come out and ‘Fire It Up’, you know what I mean?” No stranger to the radio waves, Halliwell held the privileged position as resident DJ for BBC’s Radio One, broadcast into millions of UK homes from 2003-2008. Capitalising on the popularity of his Radio One show he launched his own Fire it Up Radio

Eddie Halliwell

in September 2009 which was immediately syndicated to broadcast to over 70 stations in 35 countries. Halliwell elaborates on the show’s success: “I’ve been pretty much amazed by the feedback and exposure and it’s gone around the world and the listeners have really pushed it up another level! It’s been growing right from the beginning and its been going for about six months now and week on week it’s hitting new territory, so the people that are syndicating the show are doing an amazing job. We’ve just released the podcast which goes hand in hand with Fire It Up Radio; it has the best bits of the show for the month. It’s going amazingly well!” In an extremely competitive industry, DJs must bring something unique to the floor: it’s this originality that can ensure their longevity in the business. In addition to his high octane performances, Halliwell has embraced technology, incorporating his new live concept ED-IT which translates to Eddie DJing with Integrated Technology. He can scratch and of course, he’s been known to occasionally go crowd surfing. As Halliwell relates, it’s not always smooth sailing… “Security try to hold me back sometimes but as long as everything’s cool and people catch you up then that’s the important thing!” Halliwell concludes with some sound advice; “I get my trainers grabbed and various stuff so when I do jump out I do like to make sure I’ve got my trainers off, you don’t want to go out without shoes!”

DJ FALCON BANGALTER, BRAXE & BYRDMAN

STEVE ANGELLO STILL THE MAFIA

French house stalwart DJ Falcon – AKA Stéphane Quême – returns to Australia in April to spin some new stuff and established genre classics from Roulé label. DENIS SEMCHENKO checks in with a guy who counts Daft Punk among his best buddies. Hi Stéphane! Are you excited about your Australian visit in April? Yes – I’m now coming to Australia for the eighth year. Most times I come there, I stay for over a month because I love the country so much and I‘m really into surfing, so that makes it a wonderful time for me; it’s like a big vacation.

Which are your favourite tracks to play live? That’s a really tough question. There’s a track – I’m not saying it’s my absolute favourite, but it was for so long and I still like it because it’s so simple – called Byrdman’s Revenge by Mike Delgado. It’s a simple hook, but it was a big inspiration for me because I’m into simple stuff – essential and straight-to-the-point. I don’t like Seeing as you’re a frequent visitor to the complex breaks,I just want to make you dance. Australian shores, how would you compare the live crowds here and in Europe? DJ Falcon my cousin [Alan Braxe] – we’re also working on a new project with Thomas Bangalter and I’m hoping I’ll come back to Australia with a new track and we’ll finish it before my trip.

Can we expect to hear [Falcon’s iconic Cassius remix from 1999] La Mouche again in Australia? I haven’t played that track for a long time, but why not? I really enjoy playing all kinds of stuff, both classic and new. Lastly, when do you think the next DJ Falcon record will come out? The one I’m working on at the moment? Hopefully before the European summer, but you never know – sometimes you need more time. It’s sounding pretty cool; I’m also working with my cousin and it’s really great – we’re having such a great time working together in the studio and we’re going to put something out next year. He does roughly 160 gigs a year, manages five artists on his imprint, and, together with Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso, is one third of The Swedish House Mafia, although these days he hangs out where the weather is warmer, as RZ discovers.

Stoop Fresh Steve Patrik Josefsson Fragogiannis goes by the name of Steve Angello. I’m not sure if a publicist suggested his real name might be a little too wide for a flyer – but I’d bet success wouldn’t have eluded him either way. For Steve Angello is part of the Swedish House Mafia, owner of Size Records and one of the most successful DJs, producers and remixers on the planet. Whilst he originally hails from Sweden, these days he spends the majority of his time at his new home in Hollywood, California, and it’s from here that Angello chatted with us. “I’ve been really busy in recent times,” starts Angello. “I’ve been touring to America, Canada, South America – I’ve been on this side of the world and trying to stay out of the European winter!” Which is understandable given owners of convertibles in Los Angeles are known to use their canopies perhaps once yearly – once the smog has cleared, it is almost always sunny – and likewise it almost never rains. Yet while the move has taken a bit of his time, he is still adamant about completing a full artist album. “I’ve wanted to finish the album for the whole of last year,” says Angello, “I came to LA six months ago and I’ve been working on that. Right now, I have about 40-50 tracks that I’ve done and I want to narrow them down. I’m doing 160 gigs a year and I have five artists signed to the label so to say I’m busy is a bit of an understatement – but I’m getting there!” Angello continues: “The Swedish House Mafia is also doing really well. We did the Ibiza summer shows and have plenty more lined up. It is what it always was - it’s three friends getting together and having a blast. So things for us are looking good and it’s rolling along nicely. “As for releases, we’ve had a lot of them on the label this year and last year. I released plenty of stuff from Afrojack, Christian Smith and that sort of thing. That has been my focus for the last six months and I’m really enjoying dance music right now – more than I ever have I think!” “I am also getting really motivated about running the label because it’s going really well. And then to have five tracks a week coming out that are just sounding amazing is great. The doors are really opening up and I remember when I was 12 years old – I didn’t earn a buck for eight years. “I’ve worked hard to accomplish what I have and now I want to sign new producers and DJs and things. There is so much talent out there and I wish I could sign all of it!” Finally, the Swedish (now American) don is heading back to our shores for a sway of festival dates around the country. “I think Australia is one of those places I look forward to playing the most. The crowds there are fantastic. I love the country and I always wish I could stay there longer. But I’ll spend some time in the studio for a couple of weeks before I travel with bootlegs, edits and new tracks. “Maybe something like 30 per cent of what I play might be brand new. I’ve been working towards that for the last couple of weeks and will bring Australia the best I can when I get out there again!”

SHOCKING BEATS

M-PHAZES Good Gracious [Obese Records]

Despite working an increasing number of major overseas artists, beatmaker M-Phazes keeps his debut Good Gracious a strictly Australian affair – which is just fine, considering he assembled most of the nation’s best rappers to rhyme over his productions. Each MC tries to steal the show with exciting results. Dialectrix rhymes in an incredible double time flow on The Facilitator, Pegz vividly recalls teenage love over booming horns on Blind Man, and Drapht adds a moment of levity with current triple j favourite Where’s Elvis. Bliss N Eso, Delta, Mantra and Solo also shine. Some tracks don’t quite hit the mark - NFA, 13th Son and Illy turn in average performances, while 360 & Pez’s The Club Song (a tale of a night of obnoxious, drunken nightclub behaviour) veers too close to outright parody of their hit Festival Song to be enjoyable in its own right – but Phaze’s production is always impeccable. He even manages not to be upstaged by his collaborators, dabbling in everything from live music (Muph and Plutonic’s Goodbye Gravity) to electro (Phrase’s Music Box). Good Gracious indeed.

JOSHUA HAYES 4/5

KASPER BJORKE Standing On Top Of Utopia [Hfn Music/Stomp]

Following their Harbour Boat Trips mix by Trentemøller, Hfn Music’s first artist release is from established Copenhagen talent, Kasper Bjørke. Utopia comes two years after his solo debut, In Gumbo, was released on NYC based Plant Music. The title of the album is epic in its proposition and Bjørke creates an extravagant, richly musical world, full of lush, Nordic electro sounds. Featuring a range of musicians from around the world, there’s also a resounding organic vibe, but with a distinct modern electronic edge. Midtempo house beats drunkenly stumble alongside burbling old analog synths. The warm, melancholic soundscapes are reminiscent of acts like Air, Röyksopp and Goldfrapp. Ten tracks span a broad range of sounds, from dark and exotic ambient - Great Kills, Animals and Heaven (a fantastically obscure and inspired Rolling Stones cover featuring the honeyed vocals of Louise Foo), while the more upbeat Efficient Machine features Tomas Höffding of WhoMadeWho. Danish singer Jacob Bellen’s sullen, soaring voice on italo-disco flavoured single Young Again comes across a bit like Ian Curtis crossed with Brian Ferry. While tracks like Melmac, the deep, throbbing, tech-house of Fido and Friendly Ghost, and the menacing finale of Fasano, explore Bjørke’s more dark and clubby side. An ambitious sonic exploration, the album’s a meticulously crafted musical package, through to the colourful utopian artwork by Swiss graphic artist Florence Tetiér.

JAYTECH/JAMES GRANT Anjunadeep:02 [Anjunadeep/Onelove]

Trance trio Above & Beyond have changed the face of trance over the past decade with their winning Anjunabeats label, but lately attention has been turning to its house-based offshoot Anjunadeep - which has been responsible for some of the most sublime dance music you’re likely to hear, anywhere at all. Deep, progressive grooves laced with gorgeous trancey melodies are the order of the day, and for those already acquainted with the label’s output, the idea of a new double-disc compilation of mostly fresh material is almost too good to be true. Above & Beyond took the reigns themseleves on last year’s debut compilation, but this time they’ve handed them over to A&R head James Grant along with Canberra wonderboy Jaytech, who’s been catapulted to a new level of worldwide popularity through his association with the label. While the original basically tied together the label’s existing back catalogue in a package that was wanting for flow, the sequel lives up to the stunning standard of the label itself. There’s an outstanding collection of tunes across the two discs; it’s brimming over with warmth, melody and sophisticiation. Anjunadeep:02 is about as close to electronic perfection as you can get. ANGUS PATERSON 4.5/5 STARS

L.A.O.S./Shock One & Phetsta Shape, East Perth Friday, April 9, 2010 With Inhibit Productions taking over where The Cube left off, Friday night drum ‘n’ bass is safe at Shape - as a special treat Inhibit saw fit to bring over rising stars of drum ‘n’ bass, L.A.O.S. Hailing from Finland (with a name that is an acronym for ‘Large Amounts Of Soul’), the trio has seen many releases on some of the more soulful drum ‘n’ bass labels such as Hospital and Defunked. It was with anticipation of quality, soulful music that punters filled shape early in order to catch the masters at work. Relatively unknown locals, Xander and Double-1-Seven warmed up early, each putting in solid sets. Danny Byrd’s Sweet Harmony brought people flocking to the dance floor in Double-1-Seven’s set, a clear sign of what punters had come to see. Of the trio known as L.A.O.S. only one member, D-Bex, made it to Australian shores. Starting solidly with some more jungle driven beats, the set moved fairly quickly to crowd and dance floor pleasing tunes. Sub Focus’ Follow the Light was blended very nicely into Netsky’s already classic Memory Lane. From here on, the set lost momentum, as D-Bex seemed to struggle with the fairly fundamental art of beat matching. The tune selection turned to standard dance floor music of the past year such as Empire of the Sun’s We Are the People (Sub Focus Remix), Logistics Transporter and Camo & Krooked’s Mindset. Later in the set, the tune selection reached back even further with Danny Byrd’s Gold Rush and Culture Shock’s Rework. Unfortunately, the crowd had been expecting to hear L.A.O.S. music at a L.A.O.S. show and

ShockOne and Phetsta (Pic: Chris Rich) after one and a half hours, D-Bex had failed to play almost anything produced by the trio. This, added to his sub-standard mixing, left a bad taste in the mouth of many punters. Luckily Shock One and Phetsta took the reins next. With the success of their many recent releases and their relentless attitude to DJing, the duo furiously unleashed wave after wave of mayhem onto the dance floor. Opening with a cheeky mash-up of their successful singles, the opening tracks brought every jaded punter back to the floor and by the time Cyclones hit, Shape was heaving again. What followed next was systematic destruction. Shock One grinned to himself as he dropped his remix of Netsky’s I Refuse to roars of appreciation from the crowd. The difference in calibre of mixing was made obvious at this point; just an hour earlier this tune had been met with disinterest from the crowd during D-Bex’s set. The tempo dropped at this point but intensity didn’t waver as the duo switched to grimy house to showcase another side of their production talents. The set was relentless to the end and locals J Felix and L Wood were left with the task of closing the night. Whether due to a general lack of ability or a state of pure inebriation, D-Bex from L.A.O.S. failed to deliver in the eyes of many at Shape on Friday. Shock One & Phetsta certainly made up for this, saving the night for Inhibit. Special mentions have to be made of MC’s Bear and X-Sessiv, the untalented drunken masters fighting during Shock One & Phetsta’s set and the bride and groom who thought Shape would be a better place to spend their wedding night than the jacuzzi of a five star hotel.

KANYE WEST VH1 Storytellers

[VH1 Storytellers/Roc-A Fella Records/Viacom] ‘My greatest pain in life is that I will never see me perform’. Welcome to Kanye West’s world, where he is the main attraction, always. On it’s 68th episode, VHI Storytellers gave Mr. West the opportunity to shed some light on his sordid image after a much publicised brush with Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Instead of graciously gliding through his impressive catalogue of thoughtful hits, Mr West took it as a chance to confirm his God-like persona, without much concern for the backlash he could encourage. His praise of Chris Brown and O.J. Simpson, two notorious abusers, was hugely off putting. Opening with See You In My Nightmares set the tone. His arrangement of Flashing Lights and Good Life easily brought goose pimples to the surface, all enhanced by the simple light show which can be seen on the accompanying DVD. The heavy drums and mood building intros were inspiring, but the dribble drab ‘storytelling’, continued to be dull and ruined the ending of tight performances. The continued stream of his unconscious seemed mismatched to his perfectionist musician persona he often confirms. Without doubt Kanye West is a musical genius and one of the most innovative and flexible artists of a generation. His courage to switch up the rap world is appreciated and his creativity and passion is unparalleled. On the flip side, he’s a conceded prick who has no level of self awareness. Would we take Kanye without his flamboyant comments and unconditional love of himself? Maybe. Would Stronger sound as sweet without his cheeky comments? Probably not. Storytellers confirms his arrogance, but what would you prefer, quality hip hop or a role model? Either way, he ‘ain’t changing for nobody’. YASMIN SHERIFF 3/5

MUSTANG SALLY The Mustang Friday, April 9, 2010 Kudos to Adam Hall & The Velvet Playboys who celebrated their fifth anniversary with one hell of a gig at The Mustang Bar last Friday. A huge crowd filled the bar all night, including the band’s devoted legion of local dance schools plus all those ‘swing’ inclined. The audience was serenaded by Adam’s dulcet tones and thrilled with high voltage dance numbers. This nostalgic night featured spectacular dance displays with special guests Melody, Janette Whittle, Trevor Jalla and members of The Darling Buds of May. Catch Adam & The Velvet Playboys every Friday night from 7pm at The Mustang Bar.

THE OLD FOLK FAIRBRIDGE FESTIVAL

Fairbridge Village Friday, April 9 – Sunday, April 11, 2010 If you are a fan of a fiddle – and we strictly mean the musical variety – there is more than a chance you were one of the 12,000 people who passed through the gates of Fairbridge last weekend for the 18th annual Fairbridge Festival. Western Australia’s most understated major music event, the Fairbridge Festival was a celebration of music in the truest sense. For three days some of the most talented - and largely unknown – exponents of indigenous musics from across the globe descended on beautiful Fairbridge Village, an hour’s drive south of Perth, joined by a small army of Australia’s leading folk artists – in the broad sense of the genre. Indeed, Fairbridge’s days as a purist folk festival are well and truly done as the festival warmly embraces the many subcultures within the ever widening genre, from percussion to dance, roots, bluegrass, indie, world, jazz and beyond. And the crowd, too, represented this diversity, from families rolling in from Perth in their shiny four wheel drives to Kombi vans arriving in convoy from the hippie belt of the south west. And it was at Fairbridge where these worlds collided in a truly memorable weekend of song and cultural exploration. More than 80 individual acts were programmed over the weekend at various locations around the historic village, none more anticipated than Scottish songstress Eddi Reader. One-time member of ’80s pop group Fairground Attraction, Reader has since crafted a long and fruitful solo career, topping the charts back home in the UK, receiving an MBE and taking out three Brit Awards in the process. But all reverence beyond the musical were pushed aside as people crammed into the historic – but rather tiny – Fairbridge Chapel for the first of Reader’s two performances (she would later headline the evening on the main Mandja Marquee). Apologising in advance for any unbecoming language not suited to the pious setting, Reader delivered a moving set that traversed songs about one night stands in New York to musical interpretations of the poetry of

Scotland’s first man of letters, Robert Burns. Outside the Chapel the festival was in full swing as Freo’s favourite adoptee Lucky Oceans and his band The Darling Ranges whipped up a bluegrass frenzy, bringing us the sounds of yesteryear’s America. And while fiddles, banjos and mandolins were the flavour of many stages, Perth’s own Tetrafide took the crowd on a percussive tour of the globe. Meanwhile, Simon Kelly and his band increased the volume a few notches over on the Youthopia Stage and Canada’s Genticorum won over hundreds of news fans (eventually selling out of CDs) with their intoxicating folk melodies all the way from Quebec. Speaking with X-Press, the festival’s Artistic Director Steve Barnes said: “I’ve never seen such an inspired set of performances from our artists. Arte Kanela Flamenco were the standout, getting multiple standing ovations for their breathtaking final show. Beppe Gambetta, Eddi Reader, Chipolatas and Genticorum also played to roaring houses and the main marquee was packed down to the last note played. The only problem now is how we could possibly top this for next year.” While there were countless opportunities to explore the sounds of the globe, the Fairbridge Festival was as much about the festive atmosphere away from the main stages. Many small producers were on hand to sell their wares, from organic food through to homemade musical instruments – you were even invited to build your own harp. And the buskers were out in force: except most of the buskers happened to be young children brandishing any instrument they could muster. Ukuleles, violins, didgeridoos, flutes, guitars, handclaps… you name it, the kids were working them for a buck. It seems the next generation of enterprising hippies is well and truly safe and en route to Freo! Over the course of its history the Fairbridge Festival has evolved into the perfect contradiction: passionately embraced by people who feel the festival is their little secret, yet welcoming many thousands of devotees each year. And, with the organisers having invested much in improving on-ground logistics, WA’s best guarded secret has truly become one of the state’s greatest – and most pleasant – events. _JULIAN TOMPKIN

NAME: Matt (vocals/bass) from The Reserves HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND? It s really hard to pigeonhole our sound as a whole. That can sometimes be a bad thing and also a good thing! I guess you could put us in the rock category, just to narrow it down. The Reserves are all about big sounding, melodic tracks with strong hooks and heartfelt vocals. WHO ARE THE MEMBERS IN THE BAND AND WHAT DO THEY PLAY? We ve got Yuro on the pig skins up the back, Benny to my right with the six string, Shaun on the other side with another six string thing and myself doing the vocals and bass to level it all off. Shaun s new to The Reserves, he s a young little shredder who has really bought a good dynamic to the band. - as well as getting our average age down. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CD YOU RE LAUNCHING? Fuses To Flames is The Reserves second EP, we released our first way back in 2006… We take our time but I really think the get it right before we record approach can be heard on Fuses To Flames. We spent plenty of time demo-ing and then producing the tracks before even thinking www.xpressmag.com.au

FUN, FUN, FUN! Boys, Boys, Boys! / Simone And Girlfunkle / Brash And Sassy / Sabre Tooth Tigers The Rosemount Friday, April 9, 2010 The cliché is that ‘girls just wanna have fun’, but this was proven true at Boys, Boys, Boys!’ ladydominated Ticky-Ticky Boom film clip launch last Friday night. Perhaps this scribe’s been numbed by the swag of broody, bloke-y, guitar slinging, indie rock bands that dominate the local music scene, but not since Peter Combe’s famed ‘comeback’ shows, have I seen this much sheer joy on the faces of people both on stage and in the audience. Simone And Girlfunkle kicked things off with their delicate, harmony laden acoustic schtick. Joined on the night by a drummer and clarinet player, the girls play breezy, dreamy pop tunes with the kind of melodies that drill themselves into your head and set up camp for weeks. I’m still singing Chilli Cold in the shower and I don’t even know the words. ‘Cold cold chilli, cold cold chilli chilli’ – everybody now. Sure they can veer on cutesy, and the songs may be simple at times, but the quality of Bridget Turner (who also plays in Boys, Boys, Boys!) and Gabrielle Lammer’s voices lift what they do above schmaltz or novelty. Lammers’ husky, Blasko-ey timbre brought a drama to a couple of the more theatrical tracks that was particularly enjoyable. From cute, to downright steamy and sultry, Brash And Sashy, Perth’s premier purveyors of Italo-disco added some spicier chilli to the evenings pop ragù with their hilariously melodramatic disco and synth anthems. The band dotted their set with poetic odes to various ‘boys’, with a particular literary highlight being Men In Leather. Given the

Boys, Boys, Boys! (photo: David Craddock)

quality of the verses penned, surely a volume of Brash And Sassy sonnets awaits. My knowledge of the Brash And Sassy oeuvre (as they so sexily described it with a rolling ‘r’) isn’t great but a track which may, or may not, have been called Soul Metronome particularly appealed to the dancing shoes. It evoked heady high-school roller-parties at the Bunbury Skateway in 1991, which I can assure, is a very good thing. No Milk For You was delivered with all of the drama of the track’s hilarious film clip. ‘Why buy a cow, when you can have the milk for free?’ – one of life’s enduring questions - was mulled over perfectly in Brash And Sassy’s windswept, glamorous and straight-faced style. Given that they now have two more genuinely talented musicians in their ranks, Brash And Sassy’s fuzzy line between satire and seriousness is further blurred. Singers Ava Loverock and Gennaia Febbraio have incredible pop voices, and behind the tonguein-cheek ‘80s glam, they write ridiculously good pop songs. Slightly out of place on the girldominated pop line-up, Sabre Tooth Tigers added a gloriously sloppy dose of rock ‘n’ roll to the evening. Loose, rambunctious and funny in all the right ways, the band thumped and grinded through songs like Music Is My Occupation and Rock ‘N’ Roll Music Is Forever. Many uninitiated members of the crowd looked shell shocked, an atmosphere further added to when drummer and vocalist Chris Cobilis cheekily suggested the band hadn’t

played for a while because it was much easier to play Guitar Hero – ‘you don’t have to cart around all this gear’, he laughed. Boys, Boys, Boys! finally took to the stage after unveiling the clip that everyone had come to see. The clip involves the band invading a portly man’s lounge room, and lifting his spirits with some flash-dance inspired shenanigans. Like the band’s live show, it’s fun, colourful and encourages you to tap along. A slick and professional looking product, it will hopefully get the band some national exposure. Looking like a gang of sequin-clad pop superheroes, Boys, Boys, Boys! played a typically fun-packed set, with all the usual hand-claps synchronised dance moves and ‘hey!’s. A song devoted to their manager was a nice touch, as was inviting a orange-clad prawn onstage for a dance during their final song The Prawn. Spando Budgie is the kind of song a band like this can get away to. An ode to lycra cycle wear, the band and audience danced along in ferenetic fashion. Where Have All The Good Boys Gone? was another catchy, perfectly choreographed, set highlight. They may be twee and and slightly cartoon character-ish, but in a town known for its indie output, Boys, Boys, Boys! and their pals bring a much needed injection of fun, playfulness and pop theatricality to the Perth scene. Hey! _ DAVID CRADDOCK

about when and where we were going to record it. When we felt ready to get it all down we ended up joining forces with Laurie McCallum from Sumo Sound and rented out a huge house in Margaret River for two weeks…. I think the relaxed environment coupled with us being away from home and our heads 100 per cent focused on the task was a huge factor in Fuses To Flames being the best Reserves release so far. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES ALONG THE WAY? I grew up around everything - my dads got a massive record collection so as a kid I d be woken up on a Sunday morning to the sounds of anyone from Cat Stevens to The Beatles to Led Zeppelin (and even me ol mate Johnny Farnham!). I think those earlier influences really stick. I m a sucker for a rock song with a killer hook! WHERE TO NEXT? We re looking to record our debut album later in the year, and a couple of the guys are heading to the US later this year also, so it s just plugging away promoting the new EP here in WA. Hopefully at some stage we can head East with it all and start to build more of a national profile. All going well, look out for The Reserves debut album early next year! 47

MUSIC FEEDBACK CONCERT Singing The Blues The Music Feedback Concert,an all-ages event that aims to raise awareness of youth mental health issues through music, will take place in the Northbridge Piazza on Friday, April 16, from 3pm ‘til 8pm. DAVID CRADDOCK spoke to Pui San Whittaker from the Mental Health Commission about the event. Now in its second year, the Music Feedback Program aims to reach out to 12-25 year olds through music, and encourage them to discuss mental health issues, stressing the idea that “music talks about mental health. So can you”. As part of the program a CD and DVD documentary is distributed amongst high school and university students. This year’s documentary features interviews with Mumford And Sons, Bluejuice, The Novocaines, Dan Sultan, Boys Boys Boys!, Voltaire Twins and many more nationally recognised and local acts. “Having people with a high profile that young people respect talking about mental health really breaks down the stigma,” Pui San Whittaker, one of the initiators of Music Feedback, explains of the event which is also supported by WAM, Youthbeyondblue and the Office For Youth. As well as the CD/DVD package, a large concert will be held on Friday, April 16, in the new Northbridge piazza featuring performances by Melbourne indie band British India, and local acts Felicity Groom And The Black Black Smoke, Moana Dreaming, The Novocaines, and Black Board Minds. “[Music] is a great medium in that it is a medium where people are expressing their feelings - they’re taking about things that are difficult,” Whittaker says of why the Mental Health Commission chose music to reach out to young people. “They use music to relax, or to go into a different zone or to release frustration. Whatever mood you’re in there’s a song that you can relate to or that can potentially lift your mood.” Whittaker says that artists who have appeared on this year’s DVD, and many who are appearing at this year’s concert, have been incredibly open about sharing their experiences of how music has affected their lives or those around them. “Definitely the ones that are involved

48

in the campaign have been really open about either their personal experiences of depression, or their family member’s,” she says. “If they haven’t had that direct experience they have had fans that have said that their music has helped them get through a tough time. “The Novocaines also talk about how they organised all ages gigs up in Northam – to be less isolated. A lot of the musicians talk about music as a way of building community. You might be struggling with your mental health but you can be in an environment where you’re with people that are connecting through music, through something positive.”

THE DEN OPENS ITS DOORS

The Den may already have been warmed up with a few pre-opening gigs, but this weekend this exciting new original band room at The Civic will officially open its doors to the WA gig-going public with two big shows. On Friday, April 16, The Ghost Hotel, 6s & 7s, Split Seconds, and The Belle Ends make up a filler-free line-up with touches of alt-country, classic garage rock and folk throughout. Any four of these acts could easily be headlining so take your pick. The Ghost Hotel, are currently working on songs to follow up their debut EP which was released in September last year. Frontman Aaron Gibson says it’s important for bands to have an intimate and inviting room to try out their new material, especially given the demise of the Hydey. “If we want the scene to stay strong then we need the diversity of venues,” he says. “That allows for musical diversity in the scene and gives newer bands somewhere to hone what they are doing. Hopefully punters will make an effort to get along to The Den and spend a few bucks, it’s similar in size to the Hydey front and I think we are really missing that kind of room in Perth now.” On Saturday, April 17, The Bullet Holes headline a quality indie bill with Lacey, Art In Algebra and Helix To The Sun also playing. “We pride ourselves on having an explosive live show,” Bullet Holes drummer Brad Stevens says. “The bottom line is you can expect an incredible energy, a diverse and catchy set of songs, passion, sweat and a room filled with people having fun.” Both shows $10. Entry 8pm.

CATS AND DOGS

On what can only be described as a ridiculously busy weekend of local music mayhem, Mongrel Country, The Bible Bashers, The Fags and Cat Black make up a grime-y, hard rocking, line-up at The Rocket Room on Friday, April 16. Show runs from 8-12pm, $12 entry.

SAY IT TO MY FACE

Black Board Minds

Pop punksters Hostile Little Face join the local release launch-a-thon this weekend when they debut their new EP Blueprint at The Rocket Room on Saturday, April 17. Inspired by alt rock bands like Jimmy Eat World their music blends big rock melodies with the energy of punk. Support comes from I Said The Sparrow, My So Called Life, Tracksuit, Trav & Jay. Bands from 8pm, $10.

The Painkillers

PAINKILLERS CURE THE PNEUMONIA

The as yet untitled disc is to be unveiled in June, but fans can catch them supporting Abbe May And The Rockin’ Pneumonia on Thursday, April 15. Up ‘n’ comers GOMBO are also playing on the night. Doors 8pm, tickets $10.

SPEAK TO THE MANAGER

As of this term, Central Institute Of Technology’s Music Business Diploma have started a new unit in artist management unit, which means there are some exciting new opportunities for emerging and unmanaged local bands to get some valuable guidance. Bands interested in being ‘management guinea pigs’ for 12 weeks are encouraged to email course co-ordinator Scott Adam on scott.adam@central.wa.edu.au or call 9202 4816 before 5pm Monday, April 19. Adam says acts applying should be studio ready, as a one day recording session is being offered, as well as the potential opportunity for some graphic design. Selected artists will meet with student managers to discuss touring, recording and performing plans.

HOLIDAY FOR FIT FOR KINGS

Folk pop youngsters King George play their last gig for a few months on Saturday, April 17, at the X-Wray Café in Fremantle, as drummer Scarlett is heading to the USA. Support from Wolves At The Door, and one half of local band Valiant (in acoustic mode). Tickets $10, from 8pm.

SPUD DELUXE

The mighty Potato Stars launch their new EP Xaysana at the Swan Lounge on Saturday, April 17. They’ll be supported by KT Rumble, Ozmonaut and Desertship. MC on the night is the always rockin’ Johnny Rock. Entry $10.

ROBOTOPS

Hertless Robot celebrates two years of spruiking Perth artists with a more experimental bent with a show at The Charles on Friday, April 16. Injured Ninja, French Rockets, smRts, Wind Waker, Craig McElhenny, Steve Matkov and Quick all play at this genre busting event. Tickets $12 or $15 with a free Sampler CD (stocks limited).

W.A MADE BENEDICT MOLETA Minaret Benedict Moleta will launch his fifth album Timesheet on Saturday, April 24, at Mojo’s. But like a kid on Christmas Eve, we couldn’t wait ‘til then, so we thought we’d rip off the wrapping, and give you a little taste of first single Minaret. The picture perfect vignettes of outer suburbia, that have arguably been Moleta’s trademark, are all over this track. There’s talk of guttering, cycle paths, and Moreton Bay figs trees – all seemingly insignificant details that Moleta is able to give a beautiful poeticism. A rousing backing of chime-y guitar and organ give this a beautiful melancholic pop atmosphere which reminded me of a polished, sweeter, less grubby La’s. Wonderfully sincere and refreshingly pose-less. _DAVID CRADDOCK

The Decline

THE DECLINE HAVE A BLAST

Local punk band The Decline are set to launch their debut album I’m Not Gonna Lie To You at the Prince Of Wales in Bunbury on Friday, April 16; The Civic on Saturday, April 17; and at YMCA HQ (all ages) on Sunday, April 18. The album was recorded, rather impressively, at the world renowned punk studio The Blasting Room in Ft. Collins, Colorado.“Some of our favourite bands have recorded there,” bass player and vocalist Dan Cribb says. “The Blasting Room did the last NOFX, No Use For a Name, A Wilhelm Scream and Propagandhi albums. We’re influenced by these bands and both lyrically and musically and we’re also big fans of All and the Descendents. We wanted to give this album everything we could and The Blasting Room looked like it would be amazing place to record. We lived at the studio for 23 days (two days off ) and recorded for about 10 hours a day.”

Travis Caudle

NEED A CAUDLE?

After a whirlwind tour of North America which included a stint at the famed South By Southwest showcase in Austin, Texas, local songwriter Travis Caudle is heading down south. Caudle will play at the Duckstein Brewery in Margaret River on Sunday, April 18, from 2pm. He also plays the Colonial Brewery on Saturday, April 17, from 1pm. Those further south can catch Caudle at the Denmark Tavern, on ANZAC day afternoon, and the White Star Hotel in Albany on the night.

Sugar Army

ARMY ON THE MARCH

Triple j favourites Sugar Army have announced a final WA tour before they bunker down to start working on the follow up to their 2009 debut The Parallels Amongst Ourselves. The In Control tour will stop into The Prince Of Wales in Bunbury on Friday, July 2, as well as Perth dates at The Indi Bar on Thursday, July 1; Amplifier on Saturday, July 3; and Mojo’s on Sunday, July 4.

X-PRESSIONS OF INTEREST With the Wami Festival’s Kiss My Camera photography competition on again, we asked two of our favourite photographers who have been their favourite wa bands to shoot? TONI WILKINSON: Sometimes it’s just not just Mike Wylie about the band, it’s the crowd… It’s always about that rare combination of beauty and danger that works visually. Allegiance, Outstation, The Libertines (Perth and first incarnation), The Three Orange Whips, The Tigers, Abbe May, Kim Salmon and The Surrealists and of course The Flairz because the bass player is so gorgeous! MIKE WYLIE: Jed Whitey. Because they played for the camera, and they played rock and roll like it’s meant to be played. Kiss My Camera submissions close Wednesday, April 21. See wam.asn.au for more details.

10CC The Things We Do For Life 10CC dominated radio in the late ’70s with songs that are staples to this day. Ahead of their show at the Perth Concert Hall this Sunday, April 18, BOB GORDON speaks with singer/songwriter, Graham Gouldman. Back in the mid-to-late ‘70s 10CC were everywhere. They were an agreeable wallpaper of the times, with singles such as I’m Not In Love, Arts For Art’s Sake, The Things We Do For Love and Dreadlock Holiday really capturing moments in time of that easier, more carefree era. Despite founding members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme leaving in 1976 (to form Godley & Crème, as well as become pioneers in music video produc tion) songwriter Graham Gouldman and vocalist Eric Stewart went on to even greater success. The band visited Australia twice during this heady time, which the amiable Gouldman recalls (sort of ) fondly. “The second tour blurs into memory a bit – it was either late ‘70s or early ’80s – but the first one in ’77 I remember; it’s emblazoned on my mind,â€? he laughs. “I recall we did Countdown with Molly Meldrum. The whole tour was fantastic.â€? When Stewart was seriously injured in a 1979 car crash, things for 10CC slowed down. He and Gouldman have reteamed on various occasions in the time since, but Gouldman has for the most part forged on with his own career and tours with his own band under the 10CC moniker. Their heydays are long ago but G o u l d m a n , i n t o u r i n g t h i s m u s i c, h a s witnessed first-hand how good songs – and he would know, he also wrote The Yardbirds’ For Your Love and Herman’s Hermits’ No Milk Today – transcend the passing of time. “I agree with you,â€? he says. “I mean, that’s really what it’s about and what you have to show for it, the songs and do they stand the test of time? We’re lucky because of that. Tat’s while we’re still playing and touring, because people want to hear them. “As a songwriter, all you can do is write what feels good and right for you and wait for that lovely period of time when what you do is what people like and they go and buy it. It’s almost like you go in and out of

10CC

the public taste, but of course tastes change as well. It’s about capturing that zeitgeist. “So I still write a lot with various writing par tners, and you just do what you do and hope for the best. I’m not one of those writers who’ll research what ’s happening. I mean, I hear what’s happening around me and on the radio, but not to the point where I’m compelled to write that kind of song for this kind of album, because that’s what works at the moment.â€? Gouldman says he often hears the ‘10CC factor ’ in arrangements and song production to this day – they definitely were an influential band in that respect. He’s not sure, however, if we’ll see the original line-up on stage again. “I don’t know how Eric feels,â€? he posits. “You can take that whichever way you want. Lol‌ I haven’t seen him for about a year. Kevin is the only one that I really see regularly. “I don’t think it will happen. There are certain factions that would like it to happen but there’re certain factions that will not let it. But above all we have the songs and that’s why I go out and play them.â€? Are there certain songs that always bring it all back or take you away in the moment as you perform them? “I suppose I’m Not In Love always does that,â€? Gouldman says. “There’s a special sort of magic to that song, probably more than any other.â€?
