B OW L E D OV E R It’s time to borrow Grandma’s leather bowling bag, find a comfortable pair of flats and a suitably retro outfit for a game of lawn bowls at the historic Mount Lawley Lawn Bowls Club. Founded in 1909, the Mount Lawley Lawn Bowls Club is an incredibly beautiful site, with three lush greens for Bowls and an art deco style clubhouse that will have Great Gatsby fans foaming at the mouth. Located on the corner of Storthes Street and Rookwood Street, the club is home to an array of passionate members of all ages, who love nothing more than a good game of Bowls, a cheap pint and some friendly conversation that will inevitably be about

Bowls or talented grandchildren. To celebrate Spring, X-Press Fashion made its way to the club for a game or two, and while at it, we documented some gorgeous fashion for your viewing delight. Bowled Over sees plenty of pretty pastels teamed with vintage garments and modern designs that reference eras past. If you’re interested in becoming a member of the Mount Lawley Lawn Bowls Club, or just want to get involved in a social game, call the club on (08) 3970 5070. EMMA BERGMEIER

POPSICLE The Wheels On The Bus During the Perth Fashion Festival in 2008, the clever boys and girls behind The William Street Collective took over 214 William Street in Northbridge, converting the large space into a haven for local designers and fashion fanatics alike. This year, the Collective will present Popsicle again, but they’ve tweaked the idea, converting an old bus into the venue for Popsicle, to transport the wares of local artists and designers around the city. Popsicle organiser Aimee Johns reveals that this year’s Popsicle is going to be bigger, better and a whole lot more portable in 2009. “We had Popsicle in the building last year and we really liked that concept, but wanted to make it new and exciting. The bus will be in Northbridge for two days and then other parts of the city for the final three days, which is a great way for us to showcase what William Street and Northbridge are about to a wider audience.” A bus full of clothes certainly sounds fun, but how exactly did a group of creative twenty-somethings convince a bus company to let them makeover one of their people movers? “We are getting the bus from BusWest – they’re providing us with the bus and they’ve been really accommodating. We’re ripping out all their seats and sticking stuff all over it, so everything will be new. “It’s like an old Transperth bus but it only has one door. It’s pretty big – we were out there with Renee from Lala Orange and she was saying ‘this bus is the exact same dimensions as our shop!’.” Each day during the Fashion Festival, which runs from Friday, September 4, ’til Thursday, September 10, the Popsicle bus will be parked in a different location in Northbridge or the city, with pedestrians invited on board for a shopping expedition. On the bus shoppers will find racks of garments from local designers, including MolliPop,Plonk,Lady Lascivious, Fallen Feathers, Suzi Homemaker, Martha and Lilly, Osier!, Skullduggery, Jessica Jubb, Champ & Rosie plus zines from Relative, Kingbrown, Boom and Love Is My Velocity. Johns explains that all the designers selected for the event are newcomers to the fashion industry, who she believes will benefit most from exposure during the Festival. “We approached our favourite up-and-coming designers after discussing it with all the stores, to see who they had noticed. With the bus, you have to pick the people it will benefit the most, so they have to be able to produce the stock to sell, and are ready to take it to the next level. They’re not fully established. “We always try to invite a lot of industry and shop buyers as well as the general public, so it’s really good for people who are trying to test their products on the market and see what’s working. They may not be ready for a big, fancy parade or anything, they’re kinda in the middle. “Last year was our first event so we didn’t know what to expect but we had a few thousand people through and had a positive reaction from everyone. It’s good to give designers some publicity and do something commercially, that they can benefit from. They are being promoted really professionally and now they have the beautiful Popsicle images that they can use in the future.” Visitors to the Popsicle bus can go into the draw to win $1000 William Street shopping spree, and all you have to do is “get a ticket for the bus, then fill that out, drop it in the box, and we’ll draw it at the end. You can enter once a day over seven days and we’re implementing an OnWilliam giftcard system, so you can buy gift vouchers at any of the stores and this will be the first gift voucher we ever get away. You can use it to have a beer, then buy a painting, then try on some clothes – there are lots of things to do.” For the full run down on Popsicle, head to onwilliam.com.au/ popsicle(.) OUTSKIRTS Out and About on William Street Stretching through four suburbs, uburbs, William Street isn’t just an n artery into the city; it’s a stretch of road oad that is home to restaurants, bars, rs, cafes, clothing stores, art galleries, studios tudios and many other cultural locations. ions. Even long term residents of Perth aren’t familiar with everything thing William Street has to offer, with many hidden gems to uncover, ver, and new stores opening all the time. me.

During the PerthFashionFestival, theWilliam Street Collective will showcase what their namesake has to offer through Outskirts, a precinct wide festival that celebrates art, design and culture. Aimee Johns of the William Street Collective explains the Outskirts concept; “The idea was to really focus in on the creative industries and what’s happening in Northbridge and show off what we already have and attract other creative industries to the area. The activation of the empty spaces in Northbridge was always important. We’ve used vacant buildings for pop up stores and a couple of outdoor spaces,” she reveals about the festival. On Saturday, September 5, from 10am to 5pm, Outskirts will run along William Street from Brisbane Street all the way down to Roe,inviting pedestrians to enter newly activated spaces and collect a series of artist designed magnets along the way. “We want people to have fun, traipse around Northbridge and discover some places they didn’t know existed. We’re focused on emergingdesignerssopeopleshoulduncoversomenewdiscoveries. Last year when we did the magnet collection there were lots of people who were like ‘wow, I’ve never been to that place’ or ‘I never knew that place existed’! We’re doing the magnet collection again so that will help people wander around and get into all the places,” explains Johns. Any recommendations on where to start the magnet hunt? “I reckon if you have magnets in mind, start at one end and work your way around, and on the way you should find all the places and collect the 15 magnets.” There really are way too many Outskirts events to list, but some highlights include a collection showcase called A Flake And A Dreamer by Igor and Katja at 226 William Street; Cabinet Of Curiosities, a collection of artefacts from Curtin’s third year fashion and textile students at 222 William Street; Retro Markets upstairs at 267 William Street; and Design Is Good For You, a pop-up shop from Little Design Horse on the corner of James and William Streets. Another Outskirts event that’s worth a mention is Fashion On The Outskirts, which will see snappy dressers having their photo taken by master photographer David Wooley upstairs at 267 William Street. Johns explains,“It’s about having a bit of fun, it’s to encourage people to dress up when they come down to William Street; celebrating the diversity of street style. We want to show off different styles of fashion. “Everyone who goes up there and has their photo taken will have their photo retouched by David, and then you can enter it into a competition as an individual or as part of a group and every person will get uploaded to the website and the public will vote on them, so we’ll have a couple of weeks of voting then we’ll announce the best group and individual shot and they’ll share out the prizes, which are gift vouchers for William Street shops.” Head online to onwilliam.com.au/outskirts to check out the full list of what’s happening, print out a map then make your way to William Street on September 5 for a creative extravaganza. CROSSING THE DIVIDE Student designer Leah Granich has a bright future ahead of her… As a little tacker growing up in Southern Cross, Leah Granich’s only exposure to fashion was through films and television shows, but that didn’t stop her from developing a passion for beautiful yet impracticable outfits, and the gorgeous men and women who wear them. Literally in the middle of nowhere, 400km from Perth, Southern Cross is about as far removed from Milan, Paris, London and other fashion capitals as possible; but period films such as Gone With The Wind and Pride And Prejudice introduced Granich to a foreign fantasy world, which she fell instantly in love with. After moving to Perth for highschool, Granich took up sewing classes, adding to the skills her Mother had shared with her as a youngin’. Not content with her existing skillset, Granich decided to enrol at Swan TAFE after high school, and she’s never looked back. “I had a few friends who came here and they said it was great. I’d heard it was a really good place to learn the foundations of sewing and other skills. I’ve loved the course; everyone here is amazing. The teachers give us lots of support,” she shares while taking a break from manning a cake stall at TAFE to raise funds for the fashion students’ graduation parade. While still only at the beginning of her career, Granich has her design aesthetic sussed, describing her creations as “really feminine, romantic, very delicate and dream like.” Looking at the couture dress Granich created as part of her studies at Swan TAFE, it’s evident that the young designer really

was inspired by the costume dramas she watched as a child, with her garment having a very regal feel to it. When asked about her inspiration for the dress, Granich reveals that Marie Antoinette and the elegant wallpaper popular during her reign were in fact, the main sources of inspiration for her couture gown. “The dress is made of silk and I’ve put satin ribbon all around. I like to use all natural fabrics. This piece was for our Couture assessment, and our ready-to-wear designs are inspired from that piece.” As testament to her design aesthetic, Granich has been invited to send her gown down the catwalk as part of the Perth Fashion Festival’s Student Runway show. Taking place on Sunday, September 6, at 6.30pm at Fashion Paramount, the Student Runway show will give audiences a sneak peek at the work of Perth’s next generation of designers; with judges and industry representatives present to nominate finalists for the student categories at the WA Fashion Awards. Once her studies are behind her,Granich plans to travel the globe in search of inspiration, but for the sake of the West Australian design community, we hope she isn’t too charmed by the foreign cities she visits, so that she returns home to WA. Tickets for the Student Runway show are on sale now through Ticketek. Emma Bergmeier 14 X-Press Spring Fashion 09

SHE’S A LADY Lady Lascivious Swimwear Sick of seeing Perth dwellers down at the beach wearing dorky board shorts and chlorine faded Speedos, Perth lass Nyssa Ashling set about creating a swimwear label with fun, feminine designs that were practical, yet still stylish. After trying her hand at sewing in high school, Ashling’s interest in design was peaked, leading her to seek out private sewing lessons to equip her with the skills to launch a label. After graduating from Bentley Swan TAFE’s Fashion and Manufacturing Diploma, Ashling began laying the foundations for a swimwear label with a sexy,1950s feel, which she named Lady Lascivious. “Whilst studying at TAFE, my graduate collection was shown under the name ‘Lascivious’. After graduation I also entered Perth Fashion Festival under this name, however while designing the first range I was heavily influenced by 1950s design and burlesque, so came about Lady Lascivious, which I felt was more representative of the line.” After months of hard work at the sewing machine, Ashling made her way to Sydney in 2008 to launch her label at Fashion Exposed.“I wanted to create a line of swimwear, which was driven by style, while still retaining the practicality and function of swimwear.Iwantedtocreatedesignsthatwould make women feel gorgeous, regardless if they were wearing a small bikini or a high coverage one piece. “Ultimately the focus of Lady Lascivious is on style. I have worked hard to create pieces that can make everyone feel sexy. We have classic pieces that are tailored to the sophisticated and also styles aimed at those of us who are a bit more daring.Overall Lady Lascivious believes everyone has the right to feel sexy, and our swimsuits work hard to make sure that every woman can.” Though there’s a lot less fabric involved in swimwear than say eveningwear, that doesn’t mean that swimsuits are easy sewing projects to complete, particularly due to the hard-to-sew fabrics that bathers rely on. “Being swimwear I mainly work with Spandex. As much as I enjoy working with it, the print and the quality of fabric are crucial. I find it very inspiring when you find a great print. It is exciting to see what designs unfold when you work with a material that you truly love. “I have found the sourcing of fabrics to be the most difficult task in designing and manufacturing swimwear. It is often a challenge to find great prints and fabrics that still retain a high quality. It can take a lot of time and energy, and often I find myself importing fabrics from overseas, however unfortunately this doesn’t always include the travel!” As testament to her hard work and gorgeous design aesthetic, Ashling has been invited to send her designs down the runway at Fashion Paramount as part of the prestigious Designer Collections event as part of the Perth Fashion Festival. Tickets for this event are on sale through Ticketek. Lady Lascivious swimwear will be available for purchase from the Popsicle bus which will make its way around Perth’s CBD for the Perth Fashion Festival. For information on where you can find the Popsicle bus, head to onwilliam.com.au/popsicle(.) Lady Lascivious is also stocked at Red Stripe Clothing in Northbridge. SPOTLIGHT ON PERTH Fashion WA To The Rescue! Earlier in the year on a sunny Saturday morning, Scene Models booker Jacqui Brown and stylist Chelsey Wayte met for coffee and a spot of people watching in Leederville, and over breakfast, hatched a plan for a website to showcase the he wealth of design talent in Western Australi Australia. A whole lot of coffee and a few months later, the pair had their concept sorted, with plans to launch FashionWA.com(,) a website with an online store, designer profile section, and fashion news and events coverage. After months of hard work, Wayte and Brown are ready to share their work the world, and they have high hopes for Fashion WA. “The concept for Fashion WA is to do the best thing possible to get WA labels out there using the most modern, most accessible and most affective medium for people to have the ability to research their favourite WA labels, all day, every day,any day of the week!”reveals Brown. “Chelsey had the idea for a website featuring WA labels, and together we decided we could work hard and make it happen, to hopefully make an impact in the local community.” Sick to death of losing their friends and colleagues to supposedly greener pastures over east, Wayte and Brown hope their website encourages designers to stay in Perth, rather than venture east to Melbourne or Sydney. “I hope it allows WA labels to sell their products to customers internationally without going to the cost of trying to stock internationally and I hope the local industry is developed to a point where creatives aren’t forced to find work elsewhere.” Though Perth is the most isolated capital city in the world, advances in technology, and the implementation of sites such as Fashion WA, have enabled designers based in Perth to share their work with the world through websites, blogs and fashion magazines. Brown believes Perth based creatives are slowly beginning to realise that they don’t necessarily need to leave Perth to launch their labels and advance their careers. “I think the anticipation of the arts culture in our state’s future is what keeps us all excited every day. Knowing that you are a part of a growing culture, which people are really starting to notice, is thrilling! When we first started our research into the opportunities for Fashion WA so many of the fashion houses, media representatives and agencies over east were excited as (in their words) ‘anything that comes out of WA is cool!’. Fashion WA is an exciting tool that allows everything cool from WA to stay in WA, but still be accessed by the rest of the country and the world.” Many of WA’s fashion labels have already joined forces with Fashion WA, with Story By Tang, Joveeba, Anouska, Gospel, PinchAndSpoon, PetticoatMINX, Malachi Alister Yiap, Martini + Coz, Chinky Wooster, Elementree, Stand, Paperskye, and Luxe by JJ, all stocking their wares in Fashion WA’s online store; with many other designers still to be announced. Fingers crossed that FashionWA.com dispels the myth that you can’t be successful in the fashion industry while based in Perth; while inviting the world to our doorstep, to peruse the collections of WA’s very healthy design community.
