THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA Recently Bald Head Island Limited, LLC, the island’s developer, announced the sale of its residential real estate brokerage sales and vacation rental-property management businesses to Intracoastal Realty Corporation. Haven’s editor sat down with Chad Paul, Bald Head Island Limited, LLC’s CEO, and Jim and Trey Wallace, Intracoastal Realty’s CEO and president respectively, to discuss what the transition means for the island. 16
Haven: In addition to Intracoastal Realty’s purchase of Bald Head Island Limited’s residential real estate brokerage and vacation rental-property management operations, what else was included in the transaction? Chad Paul: The transaction included the purchase and/or lease of several properties on the island—the real estate brokerage sales office near the island’s ferry landing; the property management laundry/housekeeping building located on Edward Teach; and part of the Island Chandler building, which houses the vacation rentalproperty management office. Haven: What does this transaction mean for the island? Chad: Intracoastal Realty’s expanded presence on Bald Head Island creates a sustainable real estate brokerage sales and vacation rental-property management platform positioned for growth. Intracoastal Realty has an outstanding reputation for integrity and real estate brokerage sales success and is committed to serving the island’s needs for decades to come. Haven: Does Bald Head Island Limited own the new company in whole or in part? Chad: No. Bald Head Island Limited has no ownership interest in the company and exercises no control over day-to-day operations. It’s also important to note that Bald Head Island Limited will continue to own and conduct developer residential and commercial real estate sales and operations on the island, including the Southern Living Inspired Community at Cape Fear Station. Haven: So, has Intracoastal Realty brought in an entirely new team? Jim Wallace: Quite the contrary. One thing that made this opportunity so attractive to us was the depth of experience Bald Head Island Limited’s employees brought to the table. We’ve retained many key players and are relying heavily on their expertise as we grow our footprint on the island. Haven: How would you describe your business plan going forward? Trey Wallace: It’s our desire to come out of the gate strong, but methodical. We’re working with Bald Head Island Limited’s team to transition the residential real estate brokerage and vacation rental-property management businesses onto our operations and marketing platforms. The process will be gradual as we look to marry the best aspects of both companies and leverage Bald Head Island Limited’s tremendous employee talent pool. The most important measure of our success will be, have we met the high expectations of our employees and clients?
Haven: There are any number of real estate companies doing business on the island. Why did Bald Head Island Limited choose to sell its businesses to Intracoastal? Chad: The strength of the Intracoastal Realty brand and their proven success in the region’s real estate brokerage and vacation rental-property management markets are incomparable. The company operates 14 other sales offices in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender Counties and has a tremendous track record—in 2019 its real estate sales volume was $1.2 billion. They’ve been in business since 1976—even longer than Bald Head Island Limited. We believed they were well positioned to serve the island’s current and future needs and fulfill the stewardship prerequisites associated with some of the Mitchell Family’s most important legacy businesses. Haven: What distinguishes Intracoastal Realty’s business philosophy and practices? Trey: As an independent real estate brokerage, we invest our revenue into technology, marketing, agent training, and community organizations throughout southeastern North Carolina. We’re in this for the long haul. Haven: Talk to me about the timing of the sale. Why now? Chad: This sale furthers Bald Head Island Limited’s objective of transitioning legacy assets and operations to a diverse and competent group of third-party owners, operators and stakeholders. It’s something we’ve contemplated for years. With Bald Head Island in a mature phase of development, continued diversification of business ownership supports the island’s long-term health and viability. Haven: What are Intracoastal Realty’s goals in its first year of operation on the island? Trey: This is a relationship business, and it’s not only about relationships with your clients, but also relationships with your employees, agents, and the entire community. Our company is committed to serving Bald Head Island for the long term. Ultimately, our objective is to become the market leader in residential real estate brokerage sales and vacation rental-property management on the island, one relationship at a time. Haven: Any closing thoughts? Chad: Islanders have watched Bald Head Island Limited successfully transfer other businesses to third parties in recent years. The Beaten Path Along Federal Road several trailheads enter the Bald Head Woods Preserve, a nearly 200-acre area of undisturbed maritime forest. Just off Federal Road, the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail rewards hikers with spectacular views of the creek and close encounters with fiddler crabs and wading birds when the tide is low. 24

Q: What’s one thing that never fails to interest visitors to the lighthouse? A: Folks on the historic tour are fascinated by the breadth of history on Bald Head Island. Rather than just visiting a lighthouse, they’re exploring four centuries of history. I often remark that it’s unfair how much history occurred on this tiny spit of sand.
A: My favorite item in our collection is a British soldier’s button from the Revolutionary War found by archaeologists on the lighthouse grounds. The button highlights how mundane, everyday occurrences can have immense significance to future generations. If the British soldier had not lost his button, we could not confirm the British were on Bald Head during the Revolutionary War. Q: The island is reputed to have lots of ghosts. Where do you come down on this? A: I’m not a believer; however, enough
lighthouse keepers have died on Bald Head to make even a doubter like me spooked at night! Q. What’s an ideal day on BHI if you weren’t working and could spend your time as you please? A: A long run followed immediately by a dip in the ocean to cool off! Q: If you could only use three words to describe BHI, what would they be? A: Romantic, hallowed, vigorous.

TR AV EL Back In Time For a panoramic view of the island and surrounding area, climb the 108 steps to the very top of Old Baldy Lighthouse, commissioned by Thomas Jefferson and still standing more than 200 years later. Admission to climb the lighthouse includes access to the Smith Island Museum of History, where you’ll find artifacts illuminating the daily duties of a lighthouse keeper and much more. For a deep dive into the island’s past, take a guided historic tour from the Old Baldy Foundation and hear about brushes with pirates, the trio of lighthouses that have graced the island, and the brave lifesaving servicemen who once did duty at Cape Fear Station. You’ll cover lots of ground in an oversized golf cart, with numerous stops along the way to stretch your legs. haven 25

G R I D UNDER THE RADAR: Catch as Catch Can
Kids can learn how to fish, throw a cast nest and crab like a pro with Conservancy staff. In just a couple hours’ time, they’ll catch any number of baitfish and blue crabs in the water around the Village Creek Access. Adults can participate, too, but anyone age 16 and up will need a valid N.C. fishing license (available for purchase online).
When you want to discover the island’s flora and fauna, or even the great beyond, look no further than the Bald Head Island Conservancy.
Spread YOU R W INGS Every season of the year, Bald Head Island is home to an impressive array of birds— around 250 species in total—making the island one of Audubon’s “Important Bird Areas.” Link up with a Birding Expedition to see how many you can find. Or join Conservancy staff on a Middle Island Exploration Tour for a rare opportunity to visit the Ibis Pond, a private sanctuary where our feathered friends congregate.

Blackburn grew up in Maryland and has worked at the Conservancy since April 2019. She holds a B.S. in Marine Biology and is currently working on her master’s degree. Q: What Conservancy programs are you most excited about for 2020? A: Our kids summer camps, which are
always lots of fun, and our Bald Head After Dark tour, where we use technology, like our new bat detector, to look for nocturnal critters.
Q: Sea turtles are iconic on the island. What’s another creature that you find fascinating? A: The Eastern Box Turtle is the state reptile
of N.C. and can be found roaming the forests on Bald Head. Or you can stop by the Conservancy to meet our box turtles, Gloria and Brownie Bite.
Q: Would you describe yourself as a creek person, forest person or beach person? A: A beach person! Q: You have the day off and can spend it on BHI. What do you do? A: Read a good book on the beach and
then head to Sandpiper for some coffee ice cream. Q: If you could only use three words to describe BHI, what would they be? A: Serene, natural, biodiverse.

LE A R N MOR E A BOU T THE Great Outdoors The Bald Head Island Conservancy is known for experiential summer camps for kids 5-16. While younger children catch bugs and make crafts, elementary schoolers go crabbing, fishing and shell collecting. Older students become citizen scientists by collecting data, helping with research, exploring unique career options and more.

Patrol THE SHOR E in Search of T U RTLES Join the Bald Head Island Conservancy staff on their summer evening UTV patrols with the Sea Turtle Ride Along, watch for turtle tracks leading from the waves to the dunes, and call back to base with your findings. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could see a loggerhead turtle lay her eggs or witness a nest hatch. The Conservancy also holds seasonal nightly Turtle Walks for members, which start at the Barrier Island Study Center and then move to the beach for a little lesson in ecology. If the timing is right, your group will head off to watch a turtle dig her nest and lay her eggs while the Conservancy sea turtle monitoring team collects information. Later in the season, you may get to see a nest hatch.
L IGH T U P T H E Night The Conservancy’s Bald Head After Dark Tour introduces the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and deer. After a brief presentation, you’ll join a naturalist on a flashlight-led walk to see what nighttime critters you can spot. The island’s minimal light pollution provides for a breathtaking view of constellations and planets, too.

If you’re renting, request a temporary membership in both the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club so you don’t miss a beat.
SE RV E I T U P Hot Reserve a court at the BHI Club and enjoy a tennis match within view of the ocean. Clinics, socials, and private lessons for kids and adults are available with one of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association staff members during the summer. If you’d rather watch than work up a sweat, the Horizons restaurant deck affords a bird’s-eye view of all the action.
YOU G O T TA BE Kidding The younger set doesn’t take a back seat to grownups at the Bald Head Island Club or the Shoals Club. The BHI Club offers a robust summer camp program, including golf, tennis and swimming instruction; arts and crafts; games; and plenty of aquatic activities. The Shoals Club has a full calendar of programs for kids, too, headed up by their mascot Gulliver, a sea gull who’s flown in and wisely made the island his home. From pool parties to cannonball contests to movie nights, there are more chances to dance, splash and just be a kid than you’d believe.

Escape T O T H E C A PE The oceanfront Shoals Club, which overlooks the Point of Cape Fear, offers a spacious swimming pool, along with a separate baby pool for tykes. Pool-goers enjoy sunning on the ample decks and showering off in the convenient locker rooms. When you’re ready for a change of pace, round up the family for a little friendly competition on the nearby bocce ball courts. Direct access to the cape is also a perk for members and temporary members of the Shoals Club. Just grab a towel, chair and umbrella provided by the attentive staff, and hit the beach.
DI V E Right Into It When you’re ready to cool off, the BHI Club’s amazing new aquatics complex takes warm weather fun to a whole new level. The facility includes an Olympic-sized lap pool, leisure pool and zero-entry pool. Children will enjoy the giggleinducing splash pad, slide tower, waterslides and seaside playground, while adults get their day in the sun with a poolside cabana bar that specializes in frozen drinks. 28
Being on vacation doesn’t mean you have to drop your exercise routine. In fact, the fitness facilities at the Bald Head Island Club may inspire you to take things up a notch. The smaller, but convenient, workout room at the Shoals Club makes it easy to work up a sweat before you kick back by the pool. During the warmer months, the clubs offer beach runs, water aerobics and poolside yoga, too.
Dress In All W H I T E Don white clothing and give it a go on the immaculate croquet greenswards where the Bald Head Island Croquet Club plays, practices and holds international championships. From June to September they host Family Croquet, relaxed gatherings where you can learn how the game is played.

UNDER THE RADAR: Leave Landlubbers in the Dust
Along with swimming, 14 miles of beach offer a backdrop for building sandcastles, collecting shells or just getting a good dose of vitamin D. South Beach’s long stretch of sand is ideal for strolling and shelling. Along West Beach near Harbour Village, you’ll find kids wading in the shallow surf. Out on East Beach, the waves tend to be bigger and the surfers and boogie boarders make the most of it. If you didn’t bring your board, no worries. The Sail Shop is at the ready with rentals. If you’re new to surfing, they offer group and private lessons, too. If you just want to watch, the locals tend to congregate around Beach Access 42 as soon as the sun comes up.
See another side of the island when you go sailing with the Sail Shop. Their 26’ J80 sailboat, Jive, is perfect for a relaxing funsail out on the Atlantic or along the inland waters of the Cape Fear River. You can take sailing lessons on the J80, too.

WA L K ON Water Take a standup paddleboard (SUP) excursion with Coastal Urge for a novel way to explore the island’s waters or simply rent a paddleboard if you want to head out on your own. Commune W ITH THE CR EEK Through the Bald Head Island Conservancy, you can take guided kayak tours to explore the meandering creeks. Search for egrets, ibises, herons, kingfishers, ospreys, bald eagles, and maybe even a dolphin or alligator on your tour. The Sail Shop offers guided trips along Bald Head Creek and Fishing Creek in single and double kayaks. These 90-minute tours are packed with history, stories and wildlife identification, but if you’d rather go out on your own, the Sail Shop can provide you with a kayak or canoe, life jacket and paddle, and send you on your way. Charming, Inside and Out Traditional and lovely on the outside, the newest Inspired Home in the Southern Living Inspired Community conveys an unexpected, contemporary freshness on the inside. The home’s overall black-andwhite color scheme is immediately established on the exterior, most notably with the black doors and window casings. The front porch, a critical feature of all Bald Head Island homes, continues the modern feel with striking black porch furniture made of recycled bottles and pillows from Charlotte textiles designer Laura Park.
M
easuring an unassuming 1,800 square feet, the latest Southern Living Inspired Home in Bald Head Island’s Cape Fear Station neighborhood makes a rather big impression. “If I could use only one word to describe this house, I honestly think it would have to be fabulous,” said Jeff Sanderson. His company, Whiney Blair Custom Homes, teamed with Beaufort, SC-based Allison Ramsay Architects on this featured cottage, as well as all other homes in the Southern Living Inspired Community in Cape Fear Station. Vicky Serany, whose Southern Studio Interior Design firm has also left its signature throughout the community, said the home’s appeal is not just in how it looks, but in how it lives. “I think people respond so favorably to this home because it is full of delightful surprises,” she said. “The design team incorporated so many ideas that make it feel much bigger than it actually is.” Bald Head Island Limited CEO Chad Paul agreed. “Every space in this house is utilized and unique features are tucked away throughout,” he noted. 44
Serany describes the home’s style as “Carolina Boho,” a casual, comfortable vibe that provides a modern take on a traditional beach house. She said Whitney Blair’s construction design team took the coastal Bald Head Island aesthetic and added contemporary elements and fixtures that give it a fresh, modern look. From that base, her firm established a black and white foundational color scheme and added splashes of bold hues throughout. The abstract paintings by artist Mary Zio are a case in point. Strategically placed for maximum impact, their bright colors provide plenty of pop, as well as a rich palette for other design choices. A captivating coral, for example, makes a definitive statement on a pair of small lacquered tables in the living room, as well as on cleverly utilized drum ottomans tucked under a side table. These provide additional seating when needed, as do the dining room’s upholstered host and hostess chairs, trimmed in the same eye-catching shade. “The key to smart space design is incorporating pieces that do double duty,” said Serany. “Every piece should have a
purpose, and even better if it has multiple uses.” Serany points out that fabric choices are also extremely important in a beach house. “The black-and-white, hand-blocked sandpiper print on the window treatments is our absolute favorite fabric,” she said. “It adds just the right amount of whimsy and sets the tone for the black-and-white theme.” But fabric choices aren’t just about color. “There is always the wet bathing suit, sandy feet element,” she said. “Being here is meant to be relaxing, and we try to choose fabrics you don’t have to worry about.” So, while the white sofa in the living room seems like a brave choice, it works because it’s upholstered with an indoor-outdoor performance fabric. The master suite’s bed is another nod in the easy-care category. The entire piece is slipcovered, including the headboard and frame, so it can easily be washed or even replaced. “Creating a home with interest involves a lot of layering and mixing and adding some of the unexpected,” summarized Serany. The sleekness of the lacquered pieces, for example, contrasts with the coastal, driftwood feel of the cerused oak dining table and bar cart. On the walls, shiplap runs both vertically and horizontally in the main living spaces, and its warm, wooden touch plays nicely against the cool ceramic tile backsplash in the kitchen. “Anytime we build a home in the Southern Living Inspired Community, it’s all about the details,” Jeff concurred. “We always start from scratch, so each and every home is unique.” For this Inspired Home, an efficient use of space, a balanced blend of traditional and modern, and a color scheme that pops with personality all harken back to his earlier assessment of the home. In a word: fabulous.
Everything in Its Place A beachy take on a utilitarian mudroom, this little nook off the back entrance is the perfect place to shed shoes, bags or sandy beach gear and store them so they’re ready for the next outing. The cushioned bench and classic striped pillows are proof positive that practical can still be pretty. haven 45
Make Yourself at Home Open kitchen shelving is especially hospitable, says interior designer Vicky Serany. Visitors may feel self-conscious about opening other people’s cabinets, so having pretty dishes, glasses and mugs out in the open makes guests feel comfortable helping themselves.

It accommodates a large table that provides plenty of seating for meals, as well as for games, puzzles and lingering conversation. Cute and compact, the well-stocked bar cart tucked at the foot of the stairs is easily accessible from the kitchen or dining room.

ealtime on Bald Head Island can take any number of forms. Over the years, I’ve doled out peanut butter sandwiches by the dozen to my sandy kids and their sandy friends on East Beach, communed poolside for the Taco
Tuesday buffet at the Shoals Club, and munched on pizza at Will o’ the Wisp with a glass of Chardonnay in one hand and a bingo card in the other.
By far, my favorite way to break bread is to open our vacation
home to family and close friends when we’re all lucky enough to be on the island together. Those who know me know the call of “Dinner’s ready!” means anyone within earshot is welcome around our table.
We’re quite a big group—a couple dozen in total—spanning
three generations. Bald Head Island offers the ideal backdrop for us to assemble. Summer trip planning starts in earnest around Christmas, when my little sister and I try to sync up our schedules and pick a vacation date. Between raising kids, traveling for their sports and holding down jobs, our commitment-laden lives offer only stolen moments to reconnect. But that all changes during our summer stays on the island, when we have no constraints or obligations, just unrushed quality time together. For a while, we exhale, and allow an easy, relaxed air to take hold.
When we booked this year’s vacation home, Twin Peaks,
perched on the Cape Fear River with a huge outdoor entertaining space, we knew it presented the perfect stage for an evening gathering of our families and “family of friends.”
We had two requirements going in: the dinner had to be
delicious, but easy to pull off, and one that didn’t take us as hosts out of “vacation mode.” With so many mouths to feed, we settled on a low-country boil, a sure-fire crowd pleaser. To make
the evening even more effortless, I decided to have it catered by Cape Fear Boil Company.
With the menu determined, next came setting a simple, but
elegant outdoor table. We pushed two folding tables end to end and covered them with tasseled blankets, rather than tablecloths. Under the table we used upholstery fabric to create a soft, inexpensive “rug” underfoot. Its warm palette of rust, pale pink and ochre complemented the home’s exterior color and gave off the richly textured, muted vibe we were aiming for. My friend Tiffany, who owns Room Service, an adorable home furnishings and accessories boutique on the island, was kind enough to lend us her teak folding chairs. Potted ferns, succulents, and dozens of candles helped dress up the tablescape, without feeling too formal. Quick cleanup was important to us, too, so we used disposable bamboo plates and utensils. Framing the scene overhead were string lights that we’d crisscrossed for effect.
All the elements of a good time were aligning—an
incomparable setting, beautiful table and scrumptious food. Then our company arrived, and the magic ensued. My homemade sangria was a hit. The funny stories started, all true, about the last time we’d gotten together. Bowls heaping with seafood passed back and forth family style. After dinner our friend Travis pulled out his guitar. My mom jumped up and started to dance. The teenagers put their phones in their pockets. The ferry came and went. And together, we were happy to wave it off into the sunset.

The Bald Head Island Club’s new aquatics center makes quite a splash with visitors and residents.
I
t’s a hot, sunny day in August, and all the cool kids are at the Bald Head Island Club. Apparently, age is not a factor. It seems everyone, from infants to millennials, soccer moms to senior adults, is swimming, sunning, sliding and squealing with delight.
Nicole Carroll and Natasha Savage are immersed in the fun with their daughters, who are busy doing underwater flips and acrobatic jumps off the side of the pool. The women are close friends from college, and their families have been coming to Bald Head Island together for eight years. This morning, they all went crabbing and fishing at sunrise with their husbands and Natasha’s son Griffin, 10. Now, however, it’s clearly a girls-only outing at the pool. Eight-year-old Margaret Savage is bursting with enthusiasm about the club’s new aquatics center that added a leisure pool with chaise lounges, a children’s zero-entry pool with splash features, a large splash pad area, and waterslides from a tower that ends in a plunge pool. The original pool has been redone as an adults-only retreat, complete with private cabanas, and the adjacent playground has been up-fitted with the latest in new equipment. 78

“I love everything!” declares Margaret, bobbing up and down in the middle of the group. “The food, the slides, the dumping things at the water park. There is a lot of water pressure!” Her friend Charlotte Carroll, also 8, matches her exuberance. “I like it because it’s way bigger than it used to be, plus the extra long slides,” she chimes in. “The playground is way bigger, too! It has lots more things to keep people occupied.” Her 10-year-old sister Mackenzie nods in agreement. “It has so much cool stuff,” she echoes, adding an important detail: “Plus milkshakes!” While the aquatics center is undeniably a child’s dream come true, “it’s nice there is an adults-only pool, too,” says Nicole, eyeing the much calmer area through the fence. “The cabanas are another good addition because they provide a little break from the sun.” The women report that the Carrolls and Savages, of all ages, have been down the water slides, declaring it a good time for all. “It’s just the right amount of waterpark for Bald Head Island,” summarizes Nicole. “It adds a lot without being too much.”

nne and Locke Glenn could not agree more. The family from Winston-Salem is enjoying the water with their three children: six-year-old son Eli and daughters Gardner, 4, and Addy, 8 months.
Locke says he likes the new slides as much as the kids do. “It’s so much fun with our children at these ages,” he says. “There used to be just one pool, but now there is so much more for them to enjoy and it’s much more fun.” Both Anne and Locke have been coming to Bald Head Island for years, and say it’s the only place they vacation now. Anne adds that her parents have a full membership in the Bald Head Island Club, which makes spending time on the island even more enjoyable. “It’s the perfect place for kids and family,” says Anne. “Bald Head is our special place.”

T
he Helfer family, three generations strong, are cooling off under the shooting fountains on the large splash pad. Erica Helfer Blank, who has been coming to Bald Head Island since she was eight, looks around at the aquatics center in wonder. “We’ve seen a lot of changes over the years,” she comments. “We’ve come a long way from no grocery store on the island to all of this.” Her children Eleanor, 6, Ivy, 4, and Calvin, 2, are nearly waterlogged from the day’s activities. “We are thrilled with the new facilities,” she emphasizes. “It’s a whole new level.” Erica lives in Charlotte, and appreciates Bald Head Island as a gathering place for her entire family, including her parents, Rick and Jan Helfer, and sister Sarah Helfer Fulk, who all live in Raleigh.

O
n the other side of the pool, full-time resident Cindy Early is stretched out on a chaise lounge in the shallow end, soaking up the sun. She and her husband Darryl have been living in Harbour Village for nine years, and were property owners in a partnership for eight years prior to that. “Our children, now adults, grew up coming to Bald Head Island, and they visit when they can,” says Cindy. “They love it here, too.” Cindy says life on Bald Head Island is both busy and relaxing. She plays golf, rides bikes, gets together with neighbors for dinners, does volunteer work, and is starting to get back into tennis. “We are always on the go,” she says, adding that their white Labrador retriever, Dakota, loves hopping on the golf cart and going along for the ride.

round the complex, families are slowly gathering their things. Some are ordering nibbles from the snack bar or a festive drink from the cabana bar, while others are making their way upstairs to Horizons, the club’s new restaurant with wraparound porches that overlook the pools and tennis courts, plus the Atlantic Ocean just across the street. Elsewhere on the grounds, in The Palms or on the adjacent Palm Terrace, tennis and croquet players just finishing matches are meeting up with golfers coming off the 18th hole. As the sun is setting, the mood at the Bald Head Island Club is shifting. While a peaceful elegance replaces the day’s boisterous exuberance, there is still, undeniably, an air of excitement about what the evening holds.

In 2020 the Bald Head Island restaurant scene welcomes a couple of new kids on the block along with the return of old favorites. The big news begins with Jules’ Salty Grub & Island Pub, a reimagined eatery in the former MoJo’s space along the marina
front. The venue keeps the menu seafood-centric, with several fish and shellfish options offered for lunch and dinner. The
restaurant’s namesake, Jules Showalter, a longtime island property owner, hails from Nashville, and the menu shows it, with a hot chicken sandwich, sweet-tea brined pork chop, and “pig wings” (mini fried pork shanks tossed in wing sauce) lending a
decidedly Southern accent. Old timers will appreciate the nod to the restaurant’s original roots with the Eb & Flo’s Steampot, a
hearty mix of crab legs, clams, mussels, shrimp, potatoes, corn-on-the-cob and sausage, ready to serve a crowd. You can still get a great burger here, too, along with sushi and

prepared by Executive Chef Carlos Rojas and his talented kitchen staff. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Carlos spent his childhood watching his grandmother cook meals in an outdoor brick oven over an open fire, and he carries on her passion for sharing fresh food made with
love. Delphina’s most popular menu items include signature tacos, enchiladas, burritos, bowls and quesadillas, along with their special burgers. You can also enjoy delicious pizza in-house or to-go. for breakfast. Along with everyday offerings like pancakes and biscuits, you’ll want to try the chef’s daily special, which could be Nutella-stuffed French toast, a Belgian waffle or
exquisite wine dinners at the café on occasion, along with lavish oyster roasts under the
adjacent Forest Pavilion, prepared by classically trained Chef Marc Berruet. Don’t miss the chance to watch the sun go down and the full moon come up with Pope and a few hundred of his closest friends at a monthly Howl at the Moon party, typically held at Beach Access 39. Everyone is invited—just BYOB and an appetizer to share.
Behind the Market along Edward Teach Wynd in the former police station, you’ll find
the aptly named Jailhouse Provisions. This newcomer to the island dining scene, opening
for business in summer 2020, is a lively and relaxed watering hole that just so happens to serve awesome food, too. It’s owned and operated by longtime island restauranteurs
Harper Peterson and Plunkett Dodge, so you know the specials will be good and the beer will be cold.
For a grab-and-go lunch or snack where shirt and shoes are optional, take the long
straightaway down Federal Road until you arrive at Mike’s Bites, located in a small brick building near the foundation of the Cape Fear Light. Along with fresh sandwiches and hot dogs, they serve a nice variety of Italian ice flavors and popsicles.

While you’re down near the cape, a full or temporary membership (available through
your rental company) opens the door to four different dining venues at the Shoals Club, overlooking the Cape Fear Point. The most casual is the bathing suit-friendly Sandbar
Grille, located poolside. While the selections change seasonally, a few favorites, like the crab cake sandwich served with jalapeno aioli on a brioche bun, remain on the menu
year-round. For the kiddos, chicken tenders, grilled cheese sandwiches and burgers are always available, too.
Overlooking the Shoals Club’s pool on a series of cascading terraces is The
Verandahs, an outdoor seating area with a more refined atmosphere than the Sandbar
Grille. Gourmet sandwiches like the salmon BLT with Atlantic salmon, bacon aioli, green
tomato chow chow and bibb lettuce on a sprouted grain bun tempt you at every turn, along with creatively composed artisan salads. Both lunch and dinner service are offered seasonally.
Watch the sun go down over the ocean while you dine al fresco or in the lounge
at Latitudes Wine Bar at the Shoals Club. Inspired small plates like seared sea scallops
with saffron aioli, pickled fennel, jalapeno and sweet corn or ahi tuna with sweet and
sour slaw, crispy wonton and wasabi aioli will make you want to return. Oftentimes an acoustic guitarist lends additional atmosphere to the scene. Make sure you make
reservations to dine at AQUA, the Shoals Club’s premier dining venue. Seafood lovers will appreciate the restaurant’s superb locally sourced fish and shellfish. Executive Chef
Caitlyn Fisher relies heavily on local vegetables and cheeses, too, so the menu changes
with the seasons. Recently appearing on the menu was a delicate local grouper, crab, chayote and watercress salad, garnished with orange. If you don’t enjoy seafood, a
beautifully prepared beef filet or N.Y. strip typically appears, along with creative options
for vegetarians. Save room for dessert, too. Their caramel panna cotta is a house favorite.
Located along South Beach, the Bald Head Island Club offers numerous food and
beverage options for members and temporary members. The Cabana Bar, located poolside, specializes in house-made frozen drinks that are almost too pretty to drink. The popular new Horizons restaurant combines incredible ocean views with a menu diverse
enough to please any palate. Choose from sophisticated plates like crab cakes finished
with sweet corn, dill and a mustard crème sauce, or go for lighter fare like the Cape
Point power salad, a delicious combination of shrimp, kale, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts, mandarin orange segments and toasted cashews tossed in a tropical vinaigrette. Fried seafood platters, specialty pizzas, gourmet burgers and sandwiches are also served for lunch and dinner.
The Palms and Palms Terrace at the Club provide a pub-style indoor atmosphere
and al fresco dining respectively, with the convenience of open seating—no reservations required for lunch or dinner. Whether seated inside or outside, you’ll enjoy the views of
the croquet greensward and golf holes 10 and 18. Steak lovers will appreciate the variety
of cuts offered here, along with gourmet burgers. Seafood is always on the menu, too, with salmon especially popular. Stop by the not-to-be-missed Sunday brunch buffet at The Palms for a perfect start to your day.
The Club’s chef brings an upscale approach to The Grille, which offers a range of
seafood, beef, pork and poultry dishes for lunch and dinner. Order a local cheese board

n the mid-1970s, the five original homeowners, along with property owners in the process of building, met and agreed that a property owners’ association was needed to create and uphold restrictions for the

W hen Past and Present Collide HISTORIC IMAGES BRING A FRESH TWIST TO CONTEMPORARY WORKS OF ART BY ELIZABETH WATSON CHANEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID RAMSEY
Bald Head Island’s oldest lighthouse, known affectionately as “Old Baldy,” was captured by photographer Herbert Bamber in the 1890s. Today, over a hundred years later, artist Melissa Black Reddick creates original ceramic pieces featuring those same photographs to the delight of art collectors. Melissa Reddick, whose permanent residence and workspace are in Davidson, North Carolina, has vacationed regularly on the island for the past decade. She, her husband Brad, and their three children spend up to five weeks a year
here. Initially they rented, sampling every nook and cranny of the place that enchanted them, but when the chance arose to purchase partial ownership of a house across the street from the beach, it was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. They were already members of both the Old Baldy Foundation and the Bald Head Island Conservancy. The property on Green Teal Trail has served as a true haven on an island they adore for its beauty, its privacy and its rich history. It’s been especially gratifying to watch their children gather memories over time. “We realize that when our kids revisit the same place year after year, their memory is a layered experience. It’s been
such a wonderful thing,” said Reddick. Each of the children has his or her own favorite traditions when they visit. Their youngest daughter first set foot on the island when she was just two years old. Now 11, she loves to wake up with her mom in the early mornings when the rest of the family is still asleep. “We’ll go on these little expeditions, just the two of us, looking for shells on the beach,” Reddick said. They also occasionally find small pieces of worn brick, remnants of Fort Holmes (one of a series of Civil War forts guarding the ocean inlets to the Cape Fear River). At one point Reddick experimented with using the fragments in her art by incorporating them into a ceramic glaze. Reddick also relishes how the island brings them closer together. “I first realized it when our teenaged son and daughter rode on a tandem bike together,” and with the children spaced four years apart, “It was a particularly sweet moment for me as a mom,” she recalled. Other traditions

they all look forward to include playing card games on the ferry ride to and from the island, chasing hermit crabs on the beach, fishing from the shore, visiting the lighthouse (of course), and taking advantage of the extraordinary educational programs available through the Conservancy. One such opportunity remains strong in their minds: watching sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand, and on a separate occasion witnessing the hatchlings emerge and begin their journey to the sea. As a lover of history, Reddick has enjoyed being in a house that offers her a view of Old Baldy from the kitchen window. And after receiving historic photos from the Old Baldy Foundation, she says she was “simply ecstatic.” In addition to Bamber’s expert photos of the lighthouse itself, his collection included a charming photo of the island’s most famous lighthouse keeper, “Captain Charlie,” as well as a glimpse of his home. Reddick’s career as an artist spans more than 25 years. She holds degrees in studio art and art history from Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., and a master’s degree in education (focused on museum education and ceramics) from the University of Tennessee. Her career took a sudden turn in 2016 when she inherited several boxes of family relics—their contents representing many generations. Fascinated by every artifact she discovered,

she immediately took to her studio to investigate how the treasures might find their way into her art. After two years of research and experimentation, she emerged with an original process allowing her to transfer images of the historic documents and photos onto clay, without damaging the items themselves. The discovery constituted a major contribution to the art world, and her most recent work (now known under the banner of Modern History Clay Works)
has drawn the attention of the national media, as well as museums and historic sites. “When yesterday is found in the art of tomorrow, modern history is made,” declared Reddick, who is honored and delighted to be working on pieces for the Foundation. Our Bald Head Story BY JOSH DURH AM
W
henever I describe Bald Head Island to friends or acquaintances, I start with the most simple of facts: where it is in relation to Wilmington and Southport and how it sits in the corner of the state, right where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Then I begin to draw them in a little more. I describe the ferry ride and the lack of cars on the island. To get anywhere, you must drive a golf cart. They’re definitely intrigued by this point. When I say that there are no beachfront high-rises and that there is always plenty of room on the beach, I can tell they’re just about hooked. That’s when I describe the laid-back pace, which the island regulars call “Turtle Time.” By this point, they have that far-away gaze in their eyes. They’re already imagining this wonderful place, and what they see are no crowds, no rushing around, and no worries. Then I close the deal with this refrain: there’s just a whole lot of nothing there. I’ve described the island this way for more than 20 years. But it’s not the best way to tell the story, and it’s certainly not the best way to tell our story. Our mother introduced us to Bald Head Island in November 1994, when she had the great idea (as moms tend to do) to host Thanksgiving here. She’d been here a few times, and quickly fallen in love with it, but for her boys, who were then just making our own ways into the real world, it was our first time. Because my job at the time required that I head back to the mainland that Thanksgiving night, my trip that year was very short. Bald Head’s impact, however, has been anything but. I came back the following summer. And the summer after that. In the summer of 1998, I introduced my law school sweetheart to Bald Head, and we’ve been back every year since. My brothers have fallen under the island’s spell as well. Our mother, this past year, finally became a full-fledged owner. And then there are our children, who make our story so much better. The very first time each of our three kids dipped his or her toes in the ocean was here at Bald Head. For our daughter, it was
in May 2003, when she was eight months old. For our oldest son, it was in May 2005, when he was just three weeks old. For our youngest son, it was in August 2008, when he was three months old. They have come to Bald Head in every year of their lives. Which leads me back to how I should describe this place. Our children are now 17, 14 and 11. Our oldest will be leaving the nest soon, and it’s impossible not to wonder at times such as these whether I’ve missed too much in the years that have so quickly passed. Then we return to Bald Head, which our children claim as their own, and I am reminded of the memories we have made here. On a summer night a few years back, our youngest son and I took a break from the harbor’s Sunset Celebration to find rest just beyond the revelry. He snuggled up close in our chair, and he fell asleep against my chest. I can never visit the Riverside Adventure Company and not look over to that spot and smile. Six years ago, our daughter and her cousin made shell necklaces and sold them to passersby on South Bald Head Wynd. They made good money, which they donated to the Conservancy. This past summer, as a rising high school senior, this same daughter worked with the Conservancy to complete her Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. I could never have imagined that any place could capture her heart as much as Bald Head Island has, and I will always be grateful for how it has inspired her passion. And then there are the summer afternoons, during what we call the “magic hour,” when our oldest son races along the water’s edge, skimboard in hand, hoping to catch that perfect ride. As the sun’s golden light dances softly on the ocean, he becomes a silhouette, and I never tire of the beautiful scene. I could describe so many more of these moments, and that’s really how I should start telling the story. Because here, where there are no crowds, no rushing, and no worries, there is indeed a whole lot of nothing. But, better than that, on Bald Head Island, home to so many of our greatest and happiest memories, there is everything that I could ever want.
