Margaret Morrison HOME Solo Exhibition at Woodward Gallery October throughout December 2020

Woodward Gallery Presents

Margaret Morrison: HOME October throughout December 2020 Tuscany is Margaret Morrison’s second home. Nearly every summer, she roams through the antique markets of Arezzo, Cortona, and Lucca looking for inspiration and finds tables laden with sumptuous offerings of silver, crystal and collectables which dazzle the eye. In addition to the gentrified, high end antiques, there are tables piled high with cast off trinkets and broken lamps that fascinate Morrison with their accidental beauty. Upon returning to Athens, Georgia, Morrison began painting in her elegant, in-town studio with high ceilings and state-of-the-art lighting. However, once the pandemic hit, Morrison started working from home, leading her to rediscover her old home studio, the studio that she had abandoned eleven years earlier. She describes how her old space was “haunted by the ghosts of previous paintings.” And like the attic full of dusty draped furniture from a Hollywood movie, she brought her home studio back to life. Morrison says, “It felt safe and familiar and healing. I felt at home…. at home painting the antique markets of my other home, all the while thinking of my lovely Italian friends who were passing through their own dark time.” This season, please join us at Woodward Gallery for Margaret Morrison’s latest exhibition, Home. The glistening images Margaret Morrison has brought together for Home draw from a mixture of her past and present works of art. This latest show at Woodward Gallery, conjures her love of everything from Barbie dolls to sweets to silver. Visitors are invited to get lost in the immense detail of Morrison’s exquisite paintings, not just once but multiple times, since one viewing is simply not enough to fully discover their treasures.

“Tuscany is my second home. Nearly every summer, I float through the antique markets, Arezzo, Cortona, Lucca looking for inspiration. Table after table is spread with sumptuous offerings of silver, crystal and collectables which dazzle my eye. I note the vendors who orchestrate their displays with fine drapery backdrops and who carefully choreograph the placement of priceless objects. I consider it a form of artistry. Amid the gentrified, high end antiques, there are tables piled high with cast off trinkets and broken lamps.... wild piles devoid of any careful order. Reminiscent of an English garden, these tables fascinate me with their accidental beauty. - Margaret Morrison

“As I’m working, I am completely absorbed in creating a lush, juicy surface using plenty of wet oil paint. I work with a sense of immediacy so that I can lay down a particular field of color and then start pumping more paint right onto the surface of the painting. I’d say that most of the color mixing in my paintings happens on the canvas rather than the palette. I work from general to specific, dark up to light. I think of the details and highlights as the frosting on the cake.” - Margaret Morrison

“My father was the usual instigator in our frequent visits to the famous local ice cream store. I still get a nostalgic flutter remembering the giant double ice cream cone spinning slowly around the sign outside the store. We would order long glass dishes piled with three scoops of ice cream, rivers of hot fudge and mountains of whipped cream with a cherry gracing the summit. I can still remember the magical concoction that my father always ordered, “the Cashew Conquistador.” In those simple years, it didn’t take too long for me to arrive at the equation that sweets = unadulterated happiness.” - Margaret Morrison
