The Center for Plain Language announces one of the two Grand Prize winners among those participating in the 2019 ClearMark Awards, which--for the first time since starting in 2010--took place online, on Tuesday, May 7. The Grand ClearMark for Spanish materials went to the MAXIMUS Center for Health Literacy for the Virginia Medicaid Managed Care (Medallion 4.0) website.

“Receiving the Spanish Grand ClearMark Award for the second consecutive year is a testament to the hard work of the Center for Health Literacy team,” says Nicole Donnelly, Senior Director of the MAXIMUS Center for Health Literacy. “We are honored to share this recognition with our client at the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services as it reflects our joint commitment to helping empower health consumers.” “We are excited to receive this award from the Center for Plain Language” said Christopher Piper, Commissioner, Department of Elections. “As a government agency, we can no longer rely on a ‘one size fits all’ approach to communications; we have to use a diverse set of tools to be able to reach every eligible voter in our Commonwealth. The work that we do encourages Virginia voters to actively participate in our democracy.” So Much Happening “If you want to know what Plain Language means in 2019, take a look at our amazing winners. All our finalists showcased smart new ways you can help your readers find, understand, and use the information they need,” says David Lipscomb, lead judge for this year’s ClearMarks. Providing online access to the awards allowed attendees to gather from many places, including across the U.S., in Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands. “We got an amazing response to our announcement, which offered the link to the free sign-on. We had almost 200 people register,” says Amy Hasselkus, the Center’s Executive Director. Center For Plain Language · 21 East Main Street · Richmond, VA 23219 www.centerforplainlanguage.org

She adds: “We also livestreamed on Facebook so we had more people watching from there. A recording of the event is on the Center’s Facebook page, and will be posted to the Center’s site so people can watch later, if they so choose.” Another Grand award, for materials in English, was also presented. It went to CommunicateHealth (based in Rockville, MD) for a U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion project.
