You can have everything you want in life if you just help enough people get what they want in life. — Zig Ziglar Dear Members, Friends and Colleagues, The Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce is entering our third decade of leadership for women who both are in business - and who transact business - in our community. Yes, in our 21st year of continual operation in Colorado Springs, we remain a consistent source of knowledge, business opportunity and connection throughout the region. I was struck by this quote from Zig Ziglar because I think it speaks to the heart of our mission – to support, develop and promote women in business through education, information exchange, partnerships and alliances with other organizations promoting commerce, and to create opportunities for women in business. We can have all that we want if we help others first! We can have successful businesses if we promote the talent and drive of other companies. We can have a community of successful business leaders if we promote each other. We can have strong organizations if we support allied efforts. We can have a dynamic, successful region if we help other communities thrive. This “reciprocal relationship of success” is a key to our Chamber. Your Board of Directors is working to strengthen this organization so that you are more empowered and confident in everything you do. By working together we achieve a shared vision of economic growth and opportunity for each of us. We have implemented subtle changes to focus our organizational capacity to better serve the membership and the community. We have received feedback from members and non-members on additional opportunities to serve. As we have the ability, SCWCC will continue to grow and meet those rising expectations. Join us. Help those within your circle of influence, and those outside that sphere, knowing that you’ll be more successful yourself. I am here for that collaboration, as is every Board Member who serves the Women’s Chamber. Welcome to this year’s celebration of that renewed commitment! With warmest regards,

Beth Roalstad President, SCWCC Board of Directors (2014-2015) Executive Director, Innovations in Aging 2014 SCWCC Annual Report & Member Directory • 3

A professor of English at Colorado College since 1997, Claire Oberon Garcia offers a unique demographic perspective, as well as a substantive worldview as Second Lady of the State of Colorado. Her influence extends from the classroom to the boardroom ... from a dynamic presence on campus, to the capitol. Exploring the work of black women modernists on both sides of the Atlantic, Dr. Garcia studies the pioneering lives of writers in New York, Paris, Tangiers, and Martinique to offer rare insight on the art, race, liberation, and feminism of the early decades of this century. Each year since 2005 she has taught a semester abroad in Paris, to share the power of literature, the legacies of colonialism, diasporic culture, the values of humanism, and social justice with her students. Offering insightful social commentary, she is an accomplished author and thought-leader, who has recently co-edited a collection of scholarly and creative responses to works like The Help, Django Unchained, and The Blind Side. Set for hardcover release in mid-August, From Uncle Tom’s Cabin to The Help: Critical Perspectives on White-Authored Narratives of Black Life examines a wide range of texts and film which feature the appropriated history and stories of black life.

“CenturyLink is committed to the Pikes Peak region, and is vested in supporting communities in which our employees work and live. We have strategic partnerships with many organizations like the Women’s Chamber, and believe that if we are going to get involved with an organization, that we are going to be present, active and involved. The SCWCC provides us another avenue to reach both our residential and business customers. In turn, we hope that the members of the SCWCC as well as members of the community see the value associated with organizations like CenturyLink who continue to invest in these organizations, to provide needed financial support while creating jobs that assist them in running their businesses efficiently.” – Mark Bittle 8 • Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce 21st Anniversary
