Giving to the work of the church The work of this Church including reaching out to the community depends entirely on the generosity of people giving, particularly regular committed giving. There is no government funding or assistance and never has been. You are invited to give through internet banking (01 0262 0010575 000-St Heliers Presbyterian Church); or through special envelopes (a number for each giver), or through the offerings in the plate each Sunday. When giving through Internet Banking, please include your name in the reference so that a

tax receipt can be issued to you. All donations are tax deductible. Strict confidentiality is observed for everyone. Enquiries to John Spencer ph. 575 4942 or 021 116 4002 j.spencer@xtra.co.nz

OUR MISSION Reaching out and welcoming in as a community worshipping, loving and serving God. OUR VISION God’s love making the difference. OUR VALUES IN ACTION Trust in the Love of Christ. Be generous, tolerant and encouraging. Show love and respect for all people. Put the good of all ahead of individual preference. Take joy in what we do. Get involved. OUR GOAL To significantly deepen the commitment and increase the number of those living out the life and teaching of Jesus.

OUR PHILOSOPHY Be a place where all people are welcome and where their culture, journeys and religion are valued. Be a place that can inform, educate and enable networking and discussion on issues facing our local community and our global village. Be a safe and sustainable community. Be a nurturing and caring space that will increase the wellbeing of our wider community. Be an excellent customer services provider.

Church on Sunday All ages are welcome at every service. A particular emphasis on creativity and involvement characterises both services. Christian education for children from preschool to Year 8 and discussion and Bible teaching for college age. (See Godzone on Children & Families page). Occurs at each Sunday 9.30am.

St Heliers Church & Community Centre

Our tradition values preaching, a simple liturgy of prayer, reflection, Bible readings, and involvement of lay leaders of all ages. We expect and encourage people to give financially as they can afford and to contribute their skills or passions in a particular area of service. We encourage people and equip to be involved and service out in the community and workplace so that the church is not an end in itself. We seek to help people find employment, improve their skills and opportunities and affect change in our community as well as within ourselves.

4

Our heart is to build community, a people to belong to, to be there for one another. Love is the key to everything we do and Jesus is the source of it all.

Arohanui, Pauline Stewart

Home Groups & Friendship Groups

St Heliers Church & Community Centre

Most people find our church to be friendly and welcoming. But, if you want to go beyond Sunday morning coffee, a Home Group could be the answer. That is where deep friendships are formed.

6

Home Groups vary. They have no set life. They exist as long as they are of value to the participants. Some are Bible study groups, others are issues focussed. They are all relaxed. Honest sharing is encouraged and all opinions valued. Meeting time is usually 90 minutes which often includes personal sharing and refreshments. The frequency of meeting is up to the groups—mostly it is fortnightly. One night’s attendance is not a commitment to keep on coming. Drop in and see if any group suits you!

New groups will be formed this year. IF YOU’RE INTERESTED CONTACT STAN 585 1084.

Music for the Church Community IN SOME WAYS I BELIEVE THAT GOD IS IN THE MUSIC—SOMETIMES JOYFUL, SOMETIMES SAD, ALWAYS MEANINGFUL. One of the important things we do at church is to sing together as a congregation, as well as organise solos, harmonies, quartets, chorales. All ages participate especially at Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. Music is the universal language and it unites our different cultures and understandings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Music makes us a community. —Denis Lozica, Director
