Attention all Block Island Race Week competitors and guests. Today we begin the twenty-fourth Block Island Race Week. On behalf of our presenting sponsor, ROLEX USA, and Storm Trysail Club’s officers and members, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to New England’s finest sailing venue, Block Island, which is celebrating its 350th year in 2011. The local community and Storm Trysail Committees have been working feverishly preparing for what is sure to be another memorable week of competitive racing and catching up with old sailing mates. It’s our wish that you all enjoy the next five days, and bring away with you the fond memories of the week. Once again, we will host one-design and handicap racing sailors from around the country on three different Race Circles. Our Race Committees will again be staffed with the finest and most experienced Race Officers, committed to excellence in race management. They will again work under the watchful eyes of our On-the-water Co- Chairs, past Commodore Dick Neville and David Brennan, both of whom have serious years of race management under their belts. The Duty Office and The Tent remain at The Oar restaurant, as they have since 1997. We are so grateful for our continuing relationship with Steve and Rita Draper, the owners of The Oar and longtime residents on Block Island. Running an event of this size on an island away from home requires local partners. Over the 1 Storm Trysail Club 2011 Block Island Race Week News • Monday

years, the Drapers have been generous partners and instrumental to the success of this event. This is also true with Rally and Fran Migliaccio of the Block Island Boat Basin, and Cliff and Sands Payne of Payne’s New Harbor Dock. They have been critical to our success, as they have all simplified the task of organizing all the docking spaces of our fleet of Race Committee support boats and made them easily accessible for loading and unloading all the necessary race equipment. Our sponsors have yet again provided us with the support necessary to orchestrate another first class event. Events such as this one simply cannot happen without a loyal group of sponsors. Considering that BIRW is run exclusively by STC member volunteers, and that entry fees would only pay for a small percentage of our total costs, I hope everyone understands and appreciates the contribution they make and the value that these companies bring to this event. Please thank them for their sponsorship, and support them with your purchases. Lastly we thank you, the competitors, for your continued support of this and all Storm Trysail events. Sincerely, Nick Langone, Vice Commodore & Chairman

Radio Control Sailing Joins BIRW Schedule Boys with toys? Look again Maybe you’ve seen R/C sailboats around and have always wondered how they really sail. Maybe you have a friend who has one, but you’ve never tried sailing it.

Well all that will change on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons as Dave Ramos from Chesapeake Performance Models brings a small armada of CR-914 radio controlled sailboats to Race Week. Take it from someone who has sailed 914s for the past 15 years, STC Vice Commodore Nick Langone: “Yes, it takes a while to get your thumbs working properly, but, in the end, the guys that know how to sail the best win the races. Ramos and STC sidekick Buttons Padin (Commodore of the Larchmont Model Yacht Club) will be at the STC tent with boats for all to sail starting at 1600 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Race Week. Monday’s agenda is free sailing and informal racing so sailors can “get their thumbs working properly.” The real action starts on Tuesday with single-elimination racing from 1700 – 1830. Anyone can sign up to be part of Tuesday’s racing. Wednesday’s racing, however, will be the Championship of Champions as a crewmember from the boats leading each BIRW division will sail against each other for all the marbles.

Prizes? Sure there are prizes. The winner of both the Tuesday and Wednesday racing will be presented with a CR914 kit courtesy of Chesapeake Performance Models. And, if you don’t win, Dave Ramos will have kits you can purchase. That way, you can sharpen your skills in preparation for BIRW XXV in 2013. CR-914 radio controlled races will take place Monday through Thursday.

Welcome back, crews! Block Island Race Week XXIV presented by Rolex has arrived! As you all cruise ‘round the neck and into the Great Salt Pond, be aware that in addition to Race Week, Block Island is also celebrating a 350th Anniversary, or as the locals like to refer to it, the Semi-septennial. The town of New Shoreham, the smallest town in the smallest state in the union, was founded in 1661. This Race Week you will find plenty of your classic island favorites, along with a few new amazing options to help fill the needs of your crew while “on island.” As most of you already know, the Block Island Boat Basin store is a great first stop for the basics. They have convenience items for ship and crew alike as well as a well-stocked section of Block Island 350th gear. Check out the celebratory medallions made by local artist Peter Gibbons. As you head down Ocean Avenue towards town, you will encounter many of your favorite standbys for stocking up. For crew breakfast sandwiches, deli items and fresh-baked breads, try the Block Island Depot 401-466-2403. A little farther on is Block Island Grocery. B.I.G., as it’s locally, known caters to racers. Race Week crew orders are done by boat name and picked up each morning. Crews are encouraged to order for the whole week to simplify things. B.I.G. is also a full service grocery store with an impressive selection of just about everything. Call 401-466-2949. After loading the carts at B.I.G., crews may begin to notice some new additions to their favorite haunts in the downtown. On Ocean Avenue, next door to Captain Nick’s, is the Poor People’s Pub. Poor People’s Pub opened in April and serves food until midnight. The pub has an excellent menu ranging from classic pub grub and fresh local seafood to creative twist on culinary classics. The pub also has a great regional beer selection to enjoy out on the deck. Check them out on Tuesday for a Race Week pig roast. Call 401-466-8533

Next door, the iconic Captain Nick’s is better than ever. Under new ownership and cranking out parties every night of Race Week, Captain Nick’s (401-466-5670) will hold a Mount Gay Rum dance party on Wednesday night, followed by lla Mawana reggae band on Friday and Saturday. On the corner of Ocean and Corn Neck Road, next door to the Yellow Kittens, is the new Papa’s Pizza. Adding to Block Island’s great pizza selection, Papa’s specializes in feeding hungry crews by offering classic subs, calzones and specialty pizzas, and they deliver! Call 401-466-9939. Two downtown stores have overstocked for the week on the gear your crew may have lost at sea or forgotten. Block Island Sport Shop on Water Street carries Kaenon polarized sunglasses that eliminate all glare on the water, along with a full selection of Patagonia layers and Olukai sandals as well as wetsuits. Call 401-466-5001.Down the street on Corn Neck Road, Diamondblue Surf Shop has stocked up on sunglasses, wetsuits and tons of ocean-oriented gear. They also offer surfing and stand up paddle lessons and rentals, and they offer discounts to all crews and families participating in Race Week. Call 401-466-3145 To stock up on grog, check out the Red Bird Package Store on Dodge Street. Red Bird offers a full assortment of microbrews, liquor and wine. Best of all, they deliver! Call 401-466-2441. For crew related emergencies, see above or check out McQuade’s Marketplace. Though located off island they do deliver promptly to the plane any crew prescriptions needed. Call 401-596-0277. Any emergency that needs immediate attention is directed to the Block Island Medical Center, located next to the Block Island School. Call 401-466-2974. Have a safe week, and Pray for Wind!

IRC East Coast, J/122 National & J/109 East Coast Titles on the Line Block Island Race Week XXIV presented by Rolex is serving as the 2011 IRC East Coast Championship, the J/122 National Championship, and the J/109 East Coast Championship.

Four of the top five finishers in 2009 are back, including Don Fillipelli’s Caminos (Amagansett, NY; 2nd in ‘09), Ted Herlihy’s Gut Feeling (South Dartmouth, MA), and Bill Sweetser’s Rush (Annapolis, MD).

The IRC East Coast Championship has drawn 40 boats in four classes, with seven 52-footers in IRC 1 including the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron’s J/V 52 Anema & Core and TP 52 Invictus (Annapolis, MD). International entries include Peter Cunningham’s TP 52 PowerPlay (George Town, Grand Cayman) and Richard Oland’s Southern Cross 52 Vela Veloce (St. John, NB).

Thirteen boats are sailing in the Swan 42 class, including the winner in 2009, Ken Colburn’s Apparition (Dover, MA). Others to watch are Wendy & Phil Lotz’s Arethusa (Newport, RI; 3rd in ’09) and Brendan Brownyard’s Barleycorn (Bay Shore, NY; 4th).

This is the first major regatta for Ptarmigan, a new Ker 43 owned by Larry Dickie (Greenwich, CT; IRC 2). “We look forward to participating,” said Ptarmigan Project Manager Chad Corning (New Rochelle, NY). “This is the fifth boat that we’ve had in the last 20 years, and traditionally we compete only in distance races, but we’ve always wanted to do Block Island.” Four J/122s are vying for the National title. Bill Coates’ Otra Vez (Sugarland, TX; third in class in ’09) will be facing tough competition from Mike Bruno, Tom Boyle and Jim Callahan’s Wings (Irvington, NY; 4th in ’09), George Marks’ Georgetown III (Roslyn, NY) and Andrew Skibo’s Plum Crazy II (Ocean City, NJ). In 2009, Jeff Willis’ Challenge IV won a 16-point tiebreaker to top the always tight J/44 class over Jim Bishop’s Gold Digger (Jamestown, RI). As Bishop has said, any of the five 44 One-Designs competing is capable of winning races, including Don & Rick Rave’s Resolute (Huntington Bay, NY), Bill Ketcham’s Maxine (Greenwich, CT), and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Glory (New London, CT). Fifteen J/109s are contesting the East Coast Championship. The boat to beat is Rick Lyall’s Storm (Wilton, CT), the winner of this class by nearly 10 points in ’09.

Race Week Rental Specials $45 Bike Rentals for the Entire Week

The Farr OD class comprises four Farr 30s and four 40 ODs. Look for a strong performance from Preben Ostberg & Bud Dailey, Jr.’s 40 Tsunami (Rockville, MD), and Jim Richardson’s 30 Barking Mad (Boston, MA). The J/105 class holds the longest one-design participation record in Race Week history, and 14 105s are competing this year. “There has been J/105 class racing at Block Island since 1996, and we have been here every year,” said Nelson Weiderman (Wickford, RI), the owner of Kima. “It’s a family vacation for us. The family thing is big for me, and a weeklong event is unusual, so there will be beach time for all who do not race.” Race Week marks the fleet racing debut of the new J/111 class, with four boats competing: Paul Strauch’s Andiamo (Douglaston, NY), Sedgwick Ward’s Bravo (Shelter Island, NY), Doug Curtiss’ Wicked 2.0 (South Dartmouth, MA), and MaryEllen & Dave Tortorello’s Partnership (Fairfield, CT). “I have no idea what we’re in for this year,” said Dave Tortorello. “The J/111 is rated pretty well and is said to be much lighter and faster [than the 122] downwind, but upwind will be the question. We’ll have to wait and find out.”

Whitey Russell

Race Week’s “Go -To Guy” Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex is the well-organized, smooth running event that it is – both on and off the water – thanks to the tireless efforts of people like Whitey Russell of Newport, RI. “The first Race Week Whitey ever did was in 1969,”said Storm Trysail Club Commodore Eric Kreuter. “In those days, Whitey was sailing on a number of different boats, but he did at least four Race Weeks sailing on Russell Hoyt’s boat Destination. Russell, who was a Storm Trysail Past Commodore, was quite a character, and Whitey fit right in with him and his crew. Peter ‘Luigi’ Reggio told me that he remembers doing his first Block Island Race Week in 1969, and that Whitey was there. Whitey was a kid with an impish grin who was always looking for trouble. He liked to get into trouble…and he still does!” “When you talk to Whitey and see his smile, you can just tell he’s thinking, ‘What can I do to get into trouble?’” says Kreuter. “I remember skiing with him in Vermont about 20 years ago. We were sitting in a bar after we finished skiing, and he picked up his glass and started chewing the rim off it!” “I think Whitey has done just about every Race Week, either as a competitor or as a committee member, except for maybe three years when he was in the Pa-

In 2009, the Storm Trysail Club’s Race Week Raffle raised more than $16,000 for Block Island charities. The club expects to exceed that amount this year, and the proceeds from this year’s raffle will benefit the Block Island Rescue Squad, the Block Island Early Learning Center, and the Block Island Maritime Institute. A beneficiary of the Race Week raffle since its inception in 2003, the Block Island Rescue Squad has responded to emergencies that have occurred on the racecourse over the years, and they are indeed a most worthy recipient. The Block Island Early Learning Center is licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth & Families and the Rhode Island Department of Education. Their mission is to provide affordable, quality care and education for toddlers and pre-school age children. The Block Island Maritime Institute is a non-profit maritime and marine science education organization whose mission is to foster the preservation of maritime skills and traditions, and to promote awareness and knowledge of marine ecology. You can purchase Race Week Raffle tickets under the big top, with one ticket for $10 or a book of ten tickets for $90. Raffle prizes include custom wooden cutting boards by Soundview Millworks, Mount Gay Rum apparel, Gill sailing gear, Lewmar winch handles, bracelets from Sailormade, vineyard vines gift baskets, a sailing vacation at the Bitter End Yacht Club, and the grand prize is a Rolex Submariner.

S P O T L I G H T cific in the early ‘80s,” Kreuter continued. “I think his first Race Week as a committee member was 1989. We borrow boats for this regatta, and Whitey brings a lot of them – including his own – over to the island from his home on Aquidneck Island. He goes back and forth until they’re all out here.” Whitey also functions as an unofficial Race Week delivery service. “He packs up two of his cars and brings over a bunch of Race Week clothing every year,” said Kreuter. “He also drives trucks and brings things over by boat – whatever it takes to get stuff out here.” When a problem with Race Week logistics or organization arises, Whitey is known as a man to ask for a solution. “He bails us out,” Kreuter explained. “Marcy Trenholm, our Executive Director, spends six months organizing this event, and if she runs into a problem all of a sudden, generally with something like getting clothing out to Block Island, Whitey will jump in and say, ‘No problem. I’ll take care of it.’ And he does! He’s been helping us out in that regard for the last four or five Race Weeks, in addition to bringing his boat over here and serving on the Race Committee for the last ten years. Whitey’s wife, Lori, is also now helping out at Race Week, and it’s great to have them out here together.” It’s been 42 years since Whitey’s first Race Week, and his grin’s as impish as ever – perhaps even more so – and if there’s any trouble to be found, you can bet he’ll find it. Says Kreuter, “He’s an absolutely lovely character!” Storm Trysail Club 2011 Block Island Race Week News • Monday 15
